Frank (Pancho) Martinez Ruiz, 84, of Winkelman, passed away at 2:45 a.m. at Plaza HealthCare in Scottsdale on March 20, 2012. Mr. Ruiz is survived by his sons, Frank Javier Ruiz, George Gabriel Ruiz; and daughters, Rosita Ruiz

Shirley was born in Colorado on July 7, 1937. She is survived by her four daughters and one son; fi ve sisters and one brother; 17 grandchildren and many great- and great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two daughters and one son; two sisters and fi ve brothers. Services for Mrs. Crippen were held Thursday, March 22, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in San Manuel. Interment followed at the Kearny Memorial Cemetery in Kearny. Frank ‘Pancho’ Martinez Ruiz

and Edelia Christine Felix (Noel Fausto Felix). Pancho was born on December 8, 1927, son of Francisco T. Ruiz (Barkerville, Arizona) and Rita Martinez Ruiz (Klondyke, Arizona). Frank was born in Winkelman and was a lifetime resident of the Copper Basin area. Pancho started working at the young age of 16 in order to help raise his younger siblings and later in life children and step-children. He later worked for Asarco for 42 years as a crane operator and other various positions within the company until his retirement. Frank married and divorced Angelina L. Ramirez (deceased).

Pancho leaves behind his six grandchildren, Francisco Noel Felix, Alexis Monique Felix, Michael Anthony Felix, Natalie Grace Ruiz, Jasmine Marie Ruiz, and Isaiah Elijah Ruiz; sisters, Margaret M. Ruiz, Anita Martinez, Ramona Villegas, Lydia Gutierrez and Mary Helen Lopez; and brother, Alfred M. Ruiz. Mr. Ruiz is preceded in death by his ex-wife Angelina; brothers, Johnny M. Ruiz, Cornelio Felizardo Ruiz; sister, Clara Marquez; and parents, Francisco T. Ruiz and Rita M. Ruiz. Frank M. Ruiz l oving son, father, husband, brother, grandfather, and uncle. He will be greatly missed by

all who knew him. He will forever be remembered as a loving, kind, and peaceful man who always cared for others. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayden on Tuesday, March 27, with a Rosary recited prior to the service. On Friday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Courthouse in Downtown Kearny we will have our first Jail-A-Thon (you will see it going up this week). Why not have someone arrested to raise money for a GREAT cause! Participants can order the arrests of anyone within the Kearny City limits. After being arrested each of the accused will appear before the “judge”

who sets the bail ($25.00 or less). If the accused pays bail immediately, they are free to go; otherwise, they will be sentenced to a term of no more than one hour in jail to raise bail by calling or emailing friends for donations. Phone lines and computer access provided by CopperNet Systems Inc. (CNSI) of Kearny. If you would like to have someone ‘arrested’ in the name of raising money for ‘Family First’ please call me at 520-363-9573 by this Thursday and I will schedule for the ‘arrest’ on March 30th. This is all in fun and to raise

money for Family First Pregnancy Care Center and Diaper Bank in Winkelman. Family First Pregnancy Care Center provides confidential pregnancy tests, education on prenatal care, parenting and life skill classes for the family, material assistance, and is a resource for community services all free of charge. This Sunday morning we will have a combined service with a number of the churches in Kearny. We will be meeting at Fellowship Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. and because it is also Palm Sunday

will be having a special Palm Processional. If you would like to walk from Fellowship to the Ramada at Pioneer Park we would love to have you join us! We will have transportation to bring you back to Fellowship after the special Pioneer Days church service at 11 a.m. down at the park. It is my turn to share the message and look forward to seeing all of you at this open air service on Sunday morning. Our Sunday night non-traditional service continues to grow with “Walking-180” leading us in praise and

worship. This is a great time to get together with friends and let your hair down in a casual setting, hear some great music and come together to study God’s Word. The final tallies are in for the Kearny Primary Election held March 13. Two were declared outright winners. Rudy Flores and Sheila Stephenson received more than 50 percent plus one vote to retain their seats on the Kearny Town Council. One seat remains up for grabs. The Mayor’s position also remains open. The final number of votes are:Mayor

The winners will be declared by a simple majority. All of these numbers are considered preliminary and unofficial until they are canvassed by the Kearny Town Council.

By Georgie Wood([email protected]) I truly regret that when I was younger and had the opportunity to learn more about the personal family histories of people who were then still with us, that I didn’t pursue doing that. There is so much available now to make it easier to find out more, but I really prefer talking with people. Times have changed from the days when most people were hesitant to talk much about their family histories. My husband’s mother, Frankie Belle (Middleton) Wood, did not talk much about her earlier life in Texas where she had been born in 1879, but I did learn that when she was in her teens her mother had died, after which Frankie Belle was one of her mother’s children who were put in the care of their maternal grandmother. Also, that the grandmother wasn’t happy about her grandchildren being put in her care, and Frankie Belle was unhappy living with her grandmother who she said was mean, and would sit in her rocking chair while ordering them around like slaves. It wasn’t until 1952 when Frankie Belle started writing the following story about her life: “By the request of my children, I will try to give a brief sketch

By Nolberto Waddell With a big crowd on hand at the Lady Lobo softball field for a game between two storied softball programs in small school sports, the game turned out to be different from what it was expected to be. The Lady Lobo softball team, still with two starters out of the line-up with injuries, turned in a very lackluster performance that led to a 10-run rule shortened ball game. The Lady Miners almost put the game away in the first inning sending 11 batters to the plate scoring six runs on three hits, two walks and took advantage of three Lobo fielding errors. The Lady Lobos in the bottom of the first made it look like it was going to be a battle. After one out, Demitira Boltarez and Devon Estrada reached base with hits, after another out, Kyana Garcia pulled a hard hit ball past the Miner third baseman for a two RBI hit to cut the Miner lead. Garcia was stranded on base when the next batter struck out and the score was

2 to 6 after one inning of play. The Lady Miners were put down in order in the top of the second inning. The Lady Lobos looked like they were going to cut the Miner lead some more getting the lead-off batter on with a hit, moved her over with a perfect sacrifice bunt by Melinda Marinez and had runners on at the corners when Yvonna Gonzales reached base on an infield hit with only one out. The two runners were stranded when the next two Lobo batters went down. The Lady Miners extended their lead in the top of the third and took the enthusiasm out of the Lobos. A hit, an out, followed by a Lobo error allowed one run to come in and two consecutive infield hits brought in another run before the inning ended to give the Miners a 2 to 8 lead. The Lobos went down quietly in the third on a strikeout, a weak grounder to the pitcher and another strikeout. The Lady Miners put the game away in the top of the

Mary Lechuga put a little spark back in the Lobos when she led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a triple over the Miner right fielder’s out stretched glove and scored on a passed ball by the Miner’s catcher. The next three Lobo batters went down on soft grounders and a strikeout and the score now 3 to 12

Miners. The Miners’ lead was extended by two runs in the fifth with two hits, two errors and a passed ball for a 3 to 14 Miner lead. In the bottom of the fifth and the Lobos staring defeat in the face, the Lobos got two base runners on with walks but poor base running led to a double play when the next batter popped up to the shortstop and a throw to second base got the runner out for two outs. The next Lobo batter popped out to the pitcher to end the game with a 10-run rule 3 to 14

score. Demitria Boltarez took the pitching loss giving up the 14 runs on 13 hits but the seven fielding errors by the Lobo defense did not help. Boltarez walked two batters and struck out three. The Lady Lobo offense could only get three runs from their six hits and could not take advantage of only one Miner fielding error. Mary Lechuga had the big hit for the Lobos getting a triple in two at bats and scored a run. Kyana Garcia also had a big hit with a two RBI

single in two trips to the plate. Devon Estrada had a hit in three trips and scored a run, Demitria Boltarez had a hit in two at bats and scored a run. Yvonna Gonzales and Marlisse Perez each had a hit in two trips to the plate. The Hayden Lobo baseball team did not turn in any stats but they played one of their best games of the season before a huge crowd of Lobo and Miner fans when they sent the Miner baseball team home with a 10-run rule 14 to 4 loss.

Matthew Manriquez, after getting roughed up in the first inning for four runs, settled down to shut down the Miner bats to earn the pitching win. The Lobo bats also came up big with numerous hits to produce the fourteen runs and the defense played flawless after the rough first inning. Both the Lady Lobo softball and Lobo baseball teams started off a tough week of play yesterday against Pusch Ridge. Information from that game was unavailable at

press time. The Vandals of Miami High School will be on the Lobo and Lady Lobo diamond on Thursday, March 29. Both games have 4 p.m. starting times. The 20th Annual Lady Lobo Invitational Softball Tournament will start at 9 a.m. on Friday with games scheduled on the high school field and at the Little League at the golf course. Games will continue throughout the day on Friday and will end Saturday evening with the championship game.

By Rosalind Padilla Along the trails within the Copper Corridor are old stage coach trails, military post and cattle trails. There were legendary holdups and robberies along these trails innocent people were hurt or even arrested. On Friday you might be innocently minding your own business when your best buddy, acquaintance, employee or whomever signs a warrant for your arrest. You might be arrested and brought to the jail in front of the Pinal County Court house. Bail will be set; Coppernet Systems will have phone and email service set up so you can raise the bail money. Family First supporters will be on hand to pass out information about their organization which is the recipient of the proceeds. Remember this is all in fun and

goes to a worthy cause. Jail hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Enjoy your food at the end of Vendor Row and listen to the Cardells who will entertain all evening Friday, 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Shay and Doug are retired teachers from Aravaipa CAC and live in Aravaipa. They are both gifted musicians who play many different instruments. All their background music was recorded by them and put together so you are hearing an orchestra accompanying them. Parade lineups and scripts for the Master of Ceremonies have been prepared. If you are a last minute entry you will be placed in order received. It’s here! Pioneer Days join the parade which travels from Allen Street across Highway 177 to Alden, Tilbury and across the tracks ending at Beauford. Gather uptown for the Arizona Gunfighters show at 9:30 a.m. On Saturday there is plenty to entertain you, from softball to team roping to horseshoes. At 2 p.m. at the bandstand Porters Ghost will perform (their local connection is the Baker family). Talon Grey will perform at 4 p.m. followed by the Copper Basin Idol contestants in preparation for their contest in May. Jay Day and his group, Versions of You, begin at 7:30 p.m. and will play until the evening draws to an end. Low Expectations will play on Thursday immediately after the Queen contestants have been announced. In addition to the excitement when the carnival comes to town every one looks forward to the vendors. This is election year so expect to see politician meandering around the area. Booths along the road by the Little League Field will be mostly those who will open on Saturday although some will be there all four days and they are: Ty Morgan, Sheriff candidate; Pinal County voter registration; Friends Helping Friends with quilted items; Jennifer Cude, face painting; Herbal Lite; Family First; Steelworkers Union #886; Cobre Valley Hospital and Clinic; ASARCO; Marcus Arreano, hats; Horne Motors with two vehicles and First Investors and Ray Federal Credit Union to help with your financial needs if you decide to buy a car; Kayla

On Friday, March 30, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in front of the Courthouse in Downtown Kearny, we will have our first Jail-A-Thon (you will see it

going up this week). Why not have someone arrested for a great cause? Participants can order the arrests of someone within the Kearny town limits. After being arrested, each of the accused will appear before the “judge” who sets the bail ($25 or less). If the accused pays bail immediately, they are free to go; otherwise, they will be sentenced to a term of

no more than one hour in jail to raise bail by calling or emailing friends for donations. Phone lines and computer access provided by CopperNet Systems Inc. (CNSI) of Kearny. If you would like to have someone ‘arrested’ in the name of raising money for the Family First Pregnancy Care Center, please call Steve

This is all in fun and to raise money for Family First Pregnancy Care Center and Diaper Bank in Winkelman. Family First Pregnancy Care Center provides confidential pregnancy

tests, education on prenatal care, parenting and life skill classes for the family, material assistance, and is a resource for community services all free of charge. The event will take place in front of the County building from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 30. Steve Yurek is the chairperson with James Ruiz of Copper

Net Systems providing the phone and email for people to place calls until bail has been posted. The Family First Center in Winkelman will be the recipients of the money collected. Bail will range from $1 – $25. Don’t be afraid to participate as it is a revival of a past event and the money goes to a good cause.

Ashley Meza’s first inning strikeout was not an indication of how the rest of her day would go as the Ray Bearcat softball team traveled to Queen Creek to battle the Division 3 San Tan Foothill Sabercats. The ‘Cats did score two runs in the top of the first on a walk to Angela Fuentes, a stolen base

and a Taeler Harmon single to left. After Harmon stole second base, the ‘Cats got consecutive walks to Josette Kimmel and Annie Hinojos and Harmon scored on a passed ball. Ray did most of their damage in Meza’s next four at bats. In the third, Fuentes and Harmon walked and Meza crushed a

In the fourth inning, Meza came to the plate again and delivered a single to drive in two more runs as the ‘Cats took an 11-4 lead. San Tan cut the lead to 14-7 in the bottom of the fifth inning as they pushed three runs across but in the top of the sixth inning the ‘Cats sealed the deal for good. After Alicia Romero led

off with a walk, Fuentes singled to left and a Harmon walked to load the bases to bring up a red hot Meza, who crushed a 0-1 pitch over center for a grand slam. Meza finished the day with career best 11 runs batted in. The Bearcats had five additional players with great offensive days including Fuentes 2-2 and five runs scored, Harmon 2-3 and 5 runs scored, Kimmel and Kiana Zaragoza going 2-3 at the plate. Annie Hinojos gave up 11 hits on the day on the mound for

the ‘Cats but struck out seven Sabercats in key situations to gain the win.

The ‘Cats travel to San Carlos for a varsity only night game this Friday starting at 6 p.m.

The Ray Junior High softball received their stiffest test to date as they traveled to Superior and came away with a hard earned 6-1 win over the Panther softball team. The ‘Cats open the game with two runs in the top of the first on singles by Stormee Galka and Dany West and a two run double by Savannah Willis. The ‘Cats added four more runs in the top of the fourth on consecutive singles by Sarah Duncklee, Willis and an Arcelia Lopez bunt single which loaded the bases for Rhiannon Pacheco. Pacheco stepped to the plate and delivered a base clearing triple and then scored on Gabby Juvera’s single. ‘Cat pitcher Galka held Panther hitters to one run on 3 hits. Galka walked 3 and struck out 11 in the contest. With the win the Junior Cats improve to 4-0 on the season and have a one game lead over Hayden in the standings. They are back in action today

as they travel to play Hayden in a battle for first place. In JH baseball action, the Bearcats dropped a hard fought game 12-2 to Superior. The Bearcats got off to a strong start against the Panthers and took an early two run lead with Derrick Reidhead and Jonathan Wernett crossing the plate for the Cats. Wernett started the game on the mound and threw two strong innings, giving up only one earned run. The Bearcat relief pitching couldn’t hold the Panthers in the middle innings as the Superior scored six runs in the third inning to take control of the game. Wernett and Austin Huffman collected the only hits in the game for the Bearcats. The ‘Cats are now 1-3 on the season and play at Hayden (1-2) today beginning at 4 p.m. The Bearcat Track squad will host the Ray Junior Relays tomorrow at the high school track beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Another spring has arrived in the Copper Basin area and with it the Junior High Bearcat tracksters are hard at it, beginning their season off on the right foot. Two meets into the season and they have already shown some great strides towards proving to be a force to be reckoned with in the Central Junior High League. The League consists of track teams from Pusch Ridge, Eloy, Mountain Vista, San Manuel, San Carlos, Globe and of course the Bearcats. In the first meet of the season the Bearcats traveled to San Manuel and came out strong and showed that they were ready for the task at hand. The Bearcat boys finished second as a team by scoring 87 total points. The Lady Bearcats also did well finishing fifth with 45.5 points. The boy’s team came out strong with great performances from some of last year’s returning team and several newcomers to the sport. Jeron Coleman lead the boys with first place finishes in the high jump with a jump of 4”11”, and the 400m dash in a time of 1:04. Paul Michael Wormwood also had a great day finishing first in the shot put with a throw of 33’9.5“, and a second place finish in the discus by throwing 72’11”. Wormwood also ran the 400m dash finishing one second behind Coleman at 1:05. Other contributors for the boys were Robby Gillaspy finishing in a school record setting time of 14.04 in the 75m hurdles to place second. Gillaspy also took second place in the high jump with a leap of 4’2”, and contributed points in the 400m dash by finishing fifth at 1:10. Wyatt Miller had a jump of 3’10” to secure third place in the high jump. Billy Lutz with a third place throw of 72’2” in the discus and 28‘4” in the shot put earned him a fourth place finish. Tanner Willis showed everyone

that sixth graders could compete as well with a leap of 13’1.5” in the long jump for a fourth place finish. Rounding off the scoring for the Bearcats was the 4x400m relay team finishing fourth with a time of 5:02, that relay lead by Gillaspy, Ryan King, Chandler Coleman and Miller. The Lady Bearcats were lead by outstanding performances from Allison Ballard and Ella Miller, finishing second with 16.41 and fourth with 18.67 respectively in the 75m hurdles. Jordan Baca with a time of 15.07 and Claire Cude with a time of 15.19 gave them fourth and fifth place finishes in the 100m dash. Baca also did well in the 400m dash with a second place finish in 1:13. The ladies finished well in the throwing events with Julia Coryell finishing fifth in the shot put with a throw of 23’9” and Iiana Goad fourth in the discus with a distance of 41’9”. Goad also finished in sixth place in the high jump with a jump of 3’6”. Both of the ladies relay teams placed as the 4x100m relay consisting of Jordan Baca, Alexis Lopez, Ashley Rutter and Claire Cude finished in a time of 1:04 to secure a second place, while the 4x400m relay with team members Jordan Baca, Claire Cude, Julia Coryell and Ashley Rutter finished third place in a time of 5:42. The second meet of the season found the Bearcats traveling to Globe. While missing a few athletes due to spring break, the team continued to do well. Jeron Coleman finished with first places in the high jump and 400m dash and a third in the 100m dash. Wyatt Miller was right behind Coleman in the high jump for a second place finish. Christian Casillas finished sixth in the 800m run. Bearcat boy’s relays also placed fifth in the 4x100m and fourth in the 4x400m. The 4x100m relay consisted

The 4x100m relay for the

ladies that finished in fifth place included team members Ballard, Alexis Lopez, Jazmyne Giorsetti and Cude, while the 4x400m relay took fourth place and consisted of Julia Coryell, Lopez, Ballard and Cude. Coryell also contributed in the shot put with a third place finish. There may have been other finishers for the Bearcats but we have not received all of the final results from this meet at press time. Bearcats will look to continue

these outstanding performances in the first ever Ray Junior High Invitational Track Meet held this Thursday, March 29, and a second home meet on April 12. The junior high is in their second season of the track program and is showing signs of being a strong contender in the league. While the athletes are working hard to be successful we hope that you will come out and show your support to these youngsters as they strive to set their own

personal records in their events and also work at setting high marks in the school records. I can assure you, that you will not be disappointed by a lack of action as these tracksters come out to show everyone just how hard they have worked to be successful. So come and enjoy, field events will begin at 3:15 p.m. and running events will begin at 4 p.m. Admission is free. WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

Artist celebrates ‘Rail and Trails’


By Mila Lira The staff at Hayden-Winkelman Unified School district went above and beyond to bring the political system and election cycle to life for students of the district earlier this month. With the upcoming Presidential election in the news on a daily basis, this activity brought the process to the students level and most importantly taught them about the importance of voting in elections at all levels. The week started off with some friendly campaigning by Jeff Gregorich for the Cheetah Party and Paul Hatch of the Turtle Party. Gregorich is the Superintendent of the district and Hatch is the Principal of the elementary school. During the week the students had the opportunity to learn what each candidate stood for and on Thursday the students all met in the gymnasium for a Presidential Debate. The debate was moderated by Mila Lira of the Copper Basin News and Bill Loehr from Asarco was the Master of Ceremonies for the event. The questions for the debate were all provided by students in the district following the lessons they had been learning about government and politics during the week. The questions covered many of the topics that voters will look at in the fall such as the economy, taxes, education, war, foreign policy and space exploration to name a few. The candidates both did an excellent job at answering the questions that aligned with the focus of their newly formed political party. Through their answers they also

brought out some of the basic ideals of both the conservative and liberal party lines and discussed the various forms of government. The debate had an interesting twist at the very end when Gregorich called for an investigation of the Turtle Party super PAC because there was evidence that the PAC violated clean election laws because delicious turtle candies has been given to these junior voters. Each of the students in

grades K-12 participated in the events of the week as well as the debates. While the Junior High and High School students were a little more reserved on their emotion during the debate the Kindergarteners through sixth graders made signs, and were all chanting for their party or animal of choice. Following the debates the students each had the opportunity to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice.

This is the first in a series about an artist whose life was shaped by her childhood in the Ray-Kearny area.By CJ McKinney When Jeanmarie Simpson was 12, she regaled her seventh grade classmates with a performance piece about the adventures of “My Fair Lady” heroine Eliza Doolittle on Christopher Columbus’ flagship. Now, the 52-year-old writer/actor blends story, historical research and performance to tell the stories of unsung women past and present in a passionate plea for peace and social justice. Simpson’s path to artistic activism has taken her from that long-ago classroom in Toronto to a series of one-woman shows about women as diverse as Jeanette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress, and Mary Dyer, hanged in 1660 for being a Quaker, with stops along the way to direct a regional theater company, write screenplays and appear in numerous stage and screen productions. Simpson comes with a resume that speaks of serious art. She’s been the co-founder and artistic director of two theater companies and associate artist and project specialist for Kore Press, an activist publishing concern focusing on women writers. She lists a repertoire of regional

and off-Broadway performances that range from Camelot to Hamlet. She’s done national and international tours of her own solo shows. But a closer look reveals a devotion to activism over art: although she’s retired from a number of the organizations intended to support artists: The Screen Actors Guild, the Dramatists Guild of America and others, she remains a lifetime member of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. Is Jeanmarie Simpson a writer who performs? An actor who writes? Simpson’s work defies labels – except for the one she’s created for herself: “artivist” – an artist whose work is dedicated to peace and social justice. And as Simpson herself puts it, events since childhood have shaped the “trajectory” of her life, aiming her toward a commitment to activism through art.Now you see it, now you don’t Ray, Arizona is a casualty of the mining industry, a tiny community swallowed by copper giant Kennecott Mining Company in the mid-1950s. Jeanmarie Simpson was born in Ray – when it was still a town – to a mining engineer father and a Brooklyn-reared Venezuelan mother. When she was two, the family was relocated to nearby

Jeanmarie Simpson: ‘Artivist’ Kearny, a settlement created by Kennecott to accommodate the residents of Ray and other communities displaced by the mines. Those childhood days in Ray and Kearny offered an early exposure to other cultures and a keen awareness of separateness and social inequalities. “Kearny was a kind of diaspora,” Simpson says, where whites from Ray, and Mexican-Americans and Spaniards from neighboring Sonora and Barcelona found themselves forced to create a community. But company towns in Arizona offered few opportunities for exposure to the arts. “In rural Arizona,” Simpson says, “I don’t know who I would have been.” In 1970, Simpson’s family moved to Toronto – a hotbed of social unrest and ideologies that introduced Simpson to art, theater and new ideas. That year the Front de Liberation du Quebec kidnapped the British Trade Commissioner and Quebec’s labor minister. Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau suspended civil liberties and imposed martial law. Canada embraced American draft dodgers but hated American expansionism and militarism. Although Canada embraced American draft dodgers, many Canadians despised American militarism, and Simpson and her brothers were greeted at school with calls of “Yankee, go home!” Culture shock and political turmoil, along with opportunities to explore her own gifts as a writer and performer, opened new doors for Simpson, who credits those years in Canada – and her seventh-grade recreation of Eliza Doolittle – for changing the course of her life’s trajectory yet again. of my life. First. the name of my mother was Cora E. Chisholm, and my dad was Charley M. Middleton, a Texas Ranger under Captain L.H. McNelly’s Company. There were seven of us children, five girls and two boys. My mother passed away on December 25, 1893. One of the sweetest mothers ever. We went then to live with our grandmother, my mother’s mother, in Uvalde, Texas. One of my aunts, Annie Filleman, at that time was living near the little town of Geronimo, Arizona, right on the Gila River, also on

the edge of the Apache Reservation. It was the end of the railroad, a branch line from Bowie through Graham County. Sometimes the train made it through, other times it didn’t. Teachers at that time were hard to get. The pay was only fifty dollars a month. My step-aunt, Fannie Kelso, decided to come to Arizona to teach. I wanted to make a change also. On August 24, 1896, I landed at Geronimo, although I hadn’t made any plans just what I wanted to do. As for teaching, I didn’t think I knew enough. I hadn’t been here very long ‘till one of the trustees came from Bonita, a district above Klondyke. Then, another trustee came from

Shilo, a settlement above Ft. Thomas. I finally took the Shilo school. As the saying goes, if you are from Texas and can count to a hundred, you are eligible to teach. I taught one term. There were around thirty-five pupils and one of the boys and I were the same age. He did something one day I didn’t approve of.” Sadly, Frankie Belle didn’t finish her story. In later years, I was able to learn more, also to learn about much of the early life of Texas-born John Martin Wood who became Frankie Belle’s husband at Geronimo in 1899, with the marriage ceremony conducted by Reverend Downs of Safford, Arizona.

Role: Water Treatment Plant Operator

Description: Resolution Copper Mining

LTD operates an HDS water treatment system that treats water pumped from the old Magma mine in Superior

Arizona. The treated water discharges the plant to a 27 mile

pipe line from Superior west to the New Magma Irrigation

District where it is used to supplement crop irrigation. The incumbent will perform day to day water operation functions required to operate the HDS Water Treatment plant. All

tasks will be performed while supporting the HSE policies,

goals and objectives of Resolution Copper Mining.

Accountabilities The accountabilities of the role are as follows:• Work with Lead operator on shift• Monitor data acquisition screens and historical data and have the ability to interpret them• Regulate influents/effluents for plant operation• Perform consistent high quality laboratory work• Make chemical dose adjustments in response to changing water quality parameters• Sample and analyze influents/effluents• Maintain day to day operation necessary to meet quality effluent water for discharge• Ensure facility appearance is acceptable and work environments are safe, clean, and orderly• Report anomalous events to Water Treatment plant supervisor.

Qualifications• Two year associates degree in Science• Or one year Water treatment plant experience with license.• Basis computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel) preferred• Must have a valid Arizona drivers license• Understanding of laboratory setup and practices required to properly evaluate water processes such as pH, turbidity, TDS, Conductivity, and calcium demand.
