Roy Santa Cruz Jr. passed away Feb. 15, 2013 at Banner Thunderbird in Glendale, Arizona. Roy was born in Globe March 23, 1925. He enjoyed a happy successful life in Superior where he went to school and worked as a cop per miner. He served with honor in the Navy during World War II and in the Army during the Korean War. Stories were retold of his adventures and acts of heroism during these years. He would often share the fact that he surged through fi ve invasions, having seen enough decimation that his children or grandchildren should never have go through. During his career he represented the United Steel Workers of America as the

Sub-District Director for the Western U.S. To be around Roy was to be infused with his passion for workers rights and the responsibility of political duty. He leaves his wife Francis Santa Cruz of 35 years. He bids farewell to his loving children, Ronald Gomez, Michael Roy Santa Cruz, Gilbert Steven Santa Cruz, Therese Santa Cruz, Camille Santa Cruz, Anthony Santa Cruz and Robin Stowe; stepchildren, Arthur Livario, Carla Stone, and Adrienne Valdez; sisters, Margaret Santa Cruz of Las Vegas, NV, and Anna Tiscareno of San Clemente, CA; 20 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive Roy,

as well as a step-grandson who is serving in the US Military in Afghanistan. He shared not only his presence, but his life experiences, personal convictions and hopes for a better world we live in. His passions for these were obvious to anyone who spent time with him. We cannot forget to mention his most loved companions, for over 15 years, his dogs, Ricky, Rocky and Rosie; his four-legged children. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Esperanza Santa Cruz; sister, Avelia Rubio; brothers, Charles and Robert; and his fi rst wife, Jessie Santa Cruz. Services for Mr. Santa Cruz will be held Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

A Heartfelt Thank You from the Family ofAudrey Marie Mercado

The Mercado family gives their heartfelt thanks to the positively overwhelming outpouring of love, support, prayers, and tears offered by the Copper Basin

community at the time of the loss of our beautiful girl, Audrey Marie Mercado. Your shared grief and empathy are not only a source of healing comfort for us, but is also a wonderful tribute to the bright and loving nature of Audrey’s spirit on her brief journey through this life. Like you, we will always remember Audrey with a sparkling, genuine smile and a compassionate heart for a friend. Many of you shared her joys and her challenges and we hope that every one of you who ever offered Audrey your kindness and friendship will continue to be blessed in your own lives, as we go on without her physical presence.

So many people came from near and distant places that it would be impossible to thank you all as individuals. Our apologies for not being able to greet and visit with each of you as we would

have liked to. Nonetheless, we wish to extend our sincere gratitude to the following members of the local community for their help without which the crushing weight we’ve experienced for the past two weeks would not have been endurable:

Patsy Magdaleno, who handled details that we could not, and encouraged us to take care of the ones that we could. Richard Perez, whose kind heart and understanding maintained our physical and emotional

balance during our shock and heartbreak. Anna Bamber, whose friendship and assistance with Audrey’s memorial were as necessary as they were perfect. Pastor David Wade, whose guidance during our most difficult hour was perfectly befitting that of a kind and compassionate Shepherd. Jeremiah, Felicia, Rex, and Donna Gennicks, whose love and support for our Grandaughter Jocelyn has helped shape such a sweet young lady. Barbara Carrell, for being there for us and whose friendship and food made the thickest moments of despair much more comfortable. Alfred Denogean, whose spiritual fellowship has been a constant for Audrey and for our whole family. Also, Kimberly, Arturo, and Irene Denogean for being there for us in such a kind and gentle way. Words cannot sufficiently express our gratitude. Leo Mercado would like to give a special thank you to his friend Robert Glaspie, whose visit brought an unexpected opportunity for laughter on a day that he thought he would never smile again.

A special thanks to the staff of The Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum for being extremely helpful in allowing our large extended family to celebrate Audrey’s life in such a beautiful location. Your kindness helped us

feel at home in a way that no other situation could have approached. We welcome all of Audrey’s friends to enjoy this special place whenever you want to experience the beauty of creation and visit with Audrey’s spirit at one of her most loved spots on earth.

A life fund will be established for Audrey’s three daughters in the very near future. Anyone wishing to contribute on Audrey’s behalf may contact Deana Mercado at [email protected] and she will keep you updated as how

to help.

We are very grateful for the supportive community that you are. No matter how far away from here that our life situations may take us, we will remember you all in our prayers and will always consider this area to be our home.

God bless you all.

Bank is again up and running after a setback that interrupted food distribution last month. Delivery will continue tomorrow, Feb. 21. United Food Bank had severed all ties with the Florence Food Bank, leaving the local food bank with nothing in January. Currently, the Copper Basin Food Bank is under the umbrella of the Florence Food Bank who

meets all requirements for the Pinal County Health Department and all liability issues. United Food Bank contacted the Kearny town government asking it to sign an agreement to continue services, but the Town couldn’t do that because it would be assuming all the liability associated with a food bank and United rules. Yuma – City of Yuma Attorney Steven W. Moore has begun his presidency of the leading international organization serving municipal lawyers, becoming the first person from Yuma and only the second from Arizona to serve in that capacity in the organization’s 77-year history. After serving as president-elect for a year, Moore officially became president of the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA) in Sept. 2012. “I appreciate the trust my colleagues have placed in me as the new president and look forward to working with the board and members across North America to make the most of this opportunity,”

Moore said. IMLA is the oldest and largest association of attorneys representing local governments. The internationally recognized organization helps local government lawyers with litigation and development of local laws. IMLA works closely with a variety of organizations including the National League of Cities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the International City Managers Association. One of Moore’s goals as president of IMLA is to amend its bylaws to increase international representation in the organization, specifically allowing for more participation from Canada. Moore is one of several

municipal employees from across the state to hold a prominent position with a major professional association this year. “2013 is the year for Arizona municipal leaders at the national and international level,” said Moore. “Mayor of Mesa Scott Smith will be president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and Mayor of Avondale Maria Lopez Rogers is president of

the National League of Cities. Together, we are showcasing the leadership in the great State of Arizona.” Moore, a longtime Arizona resident and 1968 graduate of Hayden High School, has enjoyed a legal career that spans several decades. He served as the Arizona State Chair for the IMLA from 1993 to 2000 and has remained deeply involved in the organization, most

previously serving as treasurer. He was also a past president of the Yuma County Bar Association and twice was president of the Arizona City Attorneys Association. Moore’s new position will not affect his status as city attorney for the City of Yuma because IMLA is a professional group. Moore’s term also puts

Compiled by Vicki Clark Five local residents were nominated for the Copper Basin Chamber of Com-merce 2012 Citizen of the Year with multiple letters. One nominee declined

and the other four include Rita Aranda-Pina, Martina Burnam, Amanda Kelley and Joe Weller. The COY will be an-nounced Monday, Feb. 25, during the annual dinner

being held this year at Rosalia’s in Kearny. According to the panel of judges, all of the nominees are deserving of the honor of Copper Basin Citizen of the Year, but only one

Citizen of the Year to be chosen next week; four nominatedcan be selected. The panel consists of past COYs who met last week. Rita Aranda-Pina’s nomination letter cited her devotion to the Hayden-Winkelman Little League program. She has served the program for the last four years as president and volunteered about 500 hours of her time during the six seek program and did it with a smile, ac-cording to the nomination letter. She held registrations, did all the shopping and cooking for the conces-sion stand, made sure the league was in compliance with the International Little League, traveled out of town for meetings with the district representative and missed her child’s away games because she stayed home to run the concession stand. In 2012, her son did not play ball because there were no other junior teams to play. Despite this Rita remained as the H-W Little League president. The letter went on to state that in addition to being the league president she is also known as the “Kool-Aid Mom” of Winkelman. Area kids meet at her house. She picks them up

and takes them and also feeds them. She makes them feel safe and they have a good time. “Because of Rita’s tire-less hard work during the hot Arizona summer, the kids and community members benefi ted from having their Little League organization continue in the Copper Basin area,” the letter said. “Rita should be recognized as Citizen of the Year for her wonderful efforts and dedicated ser-vice to kids in our area.” Martina Burnam was nominated several times and was cited for her many qualities including being a leader, motivator, helper and giver. One letter stated that “she is without a doubt someone who does what she does for the sole love of her community, not for fame and recognition.” Martina is vice-president of the Copper Community Action Board (CCAB). This group has helped facilitate different activi-ties. Last April, the group helped the town of Winkel-man host a Breakfast on the Bride to commemorate Earth Day. CCAB also helped paint a house in Winkelman with Martina purchasing the paint.

She also aided in 2012’s Haunted Night at Pinitos Park and helped with the H-W Christmas Light Parade. Martina has been a mem-ber of the Copper Basin Chamber of Commerce for year and has spearheaded Winter Wonderland for four year and has help with Pioneer Days for eight years. She has assisted with the Great Punkin and has been a Board mem-ber of the Chamber for four years. She had also advocated through the Chamber for activities in the Hayden, Winkelman and Dudleyville areas. She started the Copper Basin Idol contest in 2005. This event is held in the H-W auditorium and she also brought the Women’s Expo to Winkelman. “Martina is very quiet, but she is an inspiration and a role model of what a true citizen should be. I every person in this world would have her heart, com-passion and love for their fellow man as this person demonstrates over and over again the world would be a better place,” stated another nomination letter.Amanda Kelley was

nominated because “aside from being a wife, mother of three, a student work-ing towards her CPA and a business owner she does so much more,” according the her nomination letter. She not only coaches soccer, she organizing teams, game days and times which have to be coordinated around school activities and fund rais-ers. the Ray Primary Parent Teacher Organization which she started with Lisa Bradford five years ago. This organization does fundraisers throughout the year to benefit students and the staff. The nomination letter went on to state that Aman-da does what she does be-cause she Wants to. “I feel that the children are the future of our community. Amanda, unselfishly does so much for our commu-nity by bringing parents, grandparents, teachers and businesses together for our children.” Joe Weller also received multiple nominations and is cited for his participation in countless volunteer ac-tivities including volunteer worker at the Copper Basin Food Bank, member of the Pioneer Day Parade and Electric Light Parade com-mittees and Trustee, Trea-surer and Leadership Team member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. He is also provider of maintenance at the Church of the Good Shepherd’s property and grounds and

serves as the coordinator of the NOMAD program. This program involves two teams of retirees each year from throughout the U.S. who travel to Kearny to work on projects for the church and other areas of need in the community. Joe plans all work proj-ects, prepares complete hardcopy specifications for all projects and procures necessary supplies. He also makes many trips out of town to get supplies using his own vehicle during the NOMAD visits Joe is also a participant in the ADOT highway cleanup program for the area designated to his church and is engineer, conductor and maintenance person for The Good Shep-herd Express, a miniature train for youngsters to ride during community events throughout the Copper Basin area. He is a member of the Town of Kearny’s VIPS (Volunteers in Police Ser-vice). As a VIP, he patrols Kearny, assists in traffic control when necessary and delivers Town Council

packets. Other activities include performing maintenance on the rock waterfall located on Alden Rd. as a continuing member of the Kearny 50th Year Anniver-sary Committee. He has donated his time and use of his personal vehicle to make round trips to Eloy to pick up garbage barrels for the Town; traveled to Tucson to purchase parts for lights at the Town Yard and then installed the parts to make the lights func-tional again. He also designed and installed the shade ramada at the Kearny Pool. Besides volunteering the above activities, Joe also assists neighbors and friends who may need a little help in situations such as rides to medical appointments, airing up vehicles tires, vacation house watches and grounds upkeep. It was the consensus of all who wrote nomina-tion letters for Joe that he deserves the COY award for all his unselfish giving to the community.

My fi rst memory of a fi rearm is seeing my Great Grand Father’s .38-40 Colts hanging by his bed. I remember sitting on the fl oor and attempting to cock the hammer on another Great Grand Father’s Marlin 12 gauge pump and helping my Father clean it. This is back when I was being potty trained….long, long ago. From the age of 5 years to 8, my responsibilities revolved around fetching game for my Father…cleaning it and cleaning the weapons used in the taking. For several years

I was expected to show that I could attend to my space in the home…my bed room quarters…without being told. My clothes hung up and put away…my bed made tight to bounce a quarter. The chores required to help Mother maintain the household be done without question, complaint nor asking. Once I had established a “positive” track record; my Father took me to the range and I got to fi re a weapon. At 8 years of age I learned to shoot. It was with a Winchester 1902 single shot 22 cal

rifl e that had belonged to my Great Grandpa Pete. The drill was military…ready on the left…ready on the right…ready on the fi ring line…one each round of ball ammunition load and lock. I remember standing with my face to the target and my Father standing behind me…he said something, and I turned to face him as I did not hear clearly. As my body turned, the weapon was at port arms with my fi nger off the trigger…as the muzzle passed in front of my Father’s face…his right hand and

arm came up and engaged the side of my head and knocked me over to the flat of my back…his boot came to rest on my chest and his voice was clean and clear… “Never point your weapon at something unless you intend to kill it!” So, from a very early age I was taught to be careful and responsible. My work with firearms, as all tools, was to be safe and considerate of other

people. My Father told me clearly that his effort to teach me had nothing to do with hunting…no, the hunt was another matter. My expertise with firearms was such that I could do my duty to my family, God and Country. That I would grow to become an American. My responsibility was to bring honor to all those who had sacrificed to provide me the opportunity to live in a wonderful country where liberty and justice were the paramount ambitions of citizens to

be taken seriously. My fellow Americans were of many shades and tribes but always American in Nation. I believe that the quagmire we find about us today was intently and carefully deployed over many decades to bring the American Nation to an end. Our “leaders” have promoted irresponsibility, profanity and decadence. They have pushed equipment on the undisciplined and untrained as a right with no responsibility. They

promote the killing of the unborn and tell the child that they care about child welfare…they promote entertainment that imbues violence, hate and degradation as the path of effective living. They manufacture and promote the medical art in psychotropic drug as

the necessary mechanism to control the humble masses. They see a better world in sustainability and green policy which yields a population manageable and appreciable...ultimately no more than a few hundred million around the whole of the earth.

It is my fervent prayer that my fellow citizens carefully consider their responsibilities and duties toward their families and our Nation. We can and must do better. Yours in Patriotism,/s/ Frank W. GirouxDuBois RanchKearny

That’s right! It’s time, once again, to make your plans to awe with, or just be awed by, the beautiful cars at Annual Oracle Spring Run Car Show, now in its 27th year. On April 20, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., the Pinal County Courthouse park in Oracle, 1040 Justice Dr., just off American Avenue, will proudly display an amazing selection of historic and unusual cars. This celebration of beatific, beautiful automotive genius is timed to coincide with the Oracle Oaks Festival, which is being sponsored by the Oracle Community Center, to give you more bang for your buck, with no backfires! What better way to celebrate the coming of Spring than a nice drive in the country, a gathering of friends and family, and feasting the eyes on a field of bright wonders, sparkling in the sun like chrome-laden flowers? Please do not water the cars! No, nor try to plant their roots in the dirt. We said “like”! A full day of events await your pleasure, beginning with a 9:30 a.m. parade, then moving on to the car show, book sale, daytime entertainment and lots of yummy food. Entrance is free for visitors, and everyone is welcome! The entry fee for cars starts at $20, but after April 15 it goes up to $25; so register early! This includes a T-shirt, dash plaque, lunch for two, goody bag, 50s music, 50/50 drawing,
