I want to welcome Thoi Truong to the Az Billiard and Dart News family. Thoi is a pool player, and a realtor. Check out his ad on this page and give him a call for all of your real estate needs.

I know I promised more details on the Arizona State Junior 9-Ball Championship in this area last month and I don’t have much more. We will be running two divisions (18 & Under, 14 & Under) and will be awarding paid entry to the BEF’s Junior Nationals in Vegas to each division winner.

Jeremy Gibbs is planning a great “East vs West” event at Skip & Jan’s on April 18th. This event will be called the Saguaro Cup, and will be similar to the Mosconi Cup event that is held for the pros each year. Come on out on the 18th and watch the West trounce the team from the East.

-Until next time Mike

Hanson over Parrill for Knobbys Win

Doug Hanson beat Chuck Parrill, two out of three sets, to win Knobby’s 9’s and under 8-Ball event on March 6th.

The first battle between these two players went to Hanson with four players left on the winner’s side. From there, Hanson went on to defeat Burt Balancad 2-1 for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Parrill defeated Bruce Hirose, Ray Ryan and Balancad to earn another shot at Hanson in the double elimination finals.

Set one of the finals went to Parrill 2-0, but Hanson came back and won the rub-ber match 2-0 for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Doug Hanson $1902nd Chuck Parrill $803rd Burt Balancad $30

Doug Hanson and Chuck Parrill

Christ “Spike” Aiardo, came back from an early loss to Ben Sutherland to win the 9s and Under 9-ball event at Skip and Jan’s on March 28th.

Sutherland would have his sights set on a repeat of his win from last month, but that goal would be derailed by Robin Clark, who sent Sutherland to the one loss side.

Clark turned in a great day’s performance with wins over Nick Cipiti, Jon Naumann, Tim Benally and Sutherland on his way to play Jason Polk for the hot-seat.

Polk’s path to the hot-seat was not any easier, with tough wins over Tenadore Lee, Chuck Parrill, Jeremy Gibbs and Danny Fausto.

Polk would continue his strong play with an 8-2 win over Clark for the hot-seat.

After the loss to Polk, Clark went to the one loss side and found Aiardo waiting. After his loss to Sutherland in the third round, Aiardo had notched wins over Brad Johnson, Karlos Chavez, Fausto and Gibbs. Aiardo sent Clark home in third place with an 8-1 victory.

The finals went two sets with Aiardo scoring back to back 8-4 wins over Polk for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Christ Aiardo $8302nd Jason Polk $5803rd Robin Clark $2504th Jeremy Gibbs $1005th Ben Sutherland $455th Danny Fausto $45

Vilmos Foldes added the second stop of the Diamond Pool Tour (presented by Casino Del Sol Resort) to his resume with an absolute clinic on top level big table 9-ball at Bullshooters on March 14th - 15th.

With the field of 93 players split between “A” and “B” players, Foldes found himself in a bracket with 25 other “A” players. Foldes started out with tough wins over Ben Sutherland, George Teyechea and Bret Huth, before Bobby Em-mons sent him to the left side of the board with a 9-7 scoreline. Emmons would go on to compete for the “A bracket” hot-seat, where he lost to Brian Reich in a tough 9-6 match.

The “B Bracket” was filled with 67 players, with a number of surprise results. Players, who might not have been known for their big table games, showed the fans that they can run out with the best of them, no matter what size the table is. Oscar Avila, Brian McGee and Timber Bridgewater all turned in terrific perfor-mances, which surprised a number of opponents along the way.

Avila would face off against Tucson’s Rick Schmitz (who was working double duty as tour photographer and competitor) for the “B Bracket” hot-seat. Avila would win with a hard earned 9-7 scoreline.

The Junior players were well represented at this event with ten players taking advantage of the tour’s “free entry for juniors” policy. Current junior points leader Nick Kline was once again the top junior finisher, with notable wins over Trevor Long and Chris Carpenter before falling to Paul Feltman Sr.

The Greenmail top lady bonus money was split between former Junior standout Heather Cortez and Tina Hess.

The Greenmail bounty on last month’s winner Scott Frost, was collected by Ben Sutherland, who ended Frost’s tournament in 17th place.

When the “A” and “B” brackets finally met on Sunday, Reich scored a 9-4 win over Avila, to take the event hot-seat.

Foldes started Sunday play with a very tough 7-6 win over Tres Kane, which must have forced the Hungarian champion to find his “A game”, as he defined the word “domination” for the rest of the day.

Next up for Foldes was Bret Huth, with that match going to Foldes 7-0. A re-match with Bobby Emmons would end with Foldes scoring a 7-1 win. Tucson’s Mike Hamman was the next victim of a 7-1 scoreline and Foldes has turned in a 21-2 record over three straight alternating break matches. Foldes stretched that record to 28-2 with a 7-0 win over Avila in the semifinal match.

The final match would go two sets with Foldes continuing to show the fans in attendance what top level 9-ball looks like. Reich was able to notch two games in the first set, but ultimately fell 9-2. Foldes would see the finish line in the second set and he pushed on for a convincing 7-0 victory and a combined 44-4 record over his last seven matches.

The Neil’s Garage Cabinets second chance tournament on Sunday drew 20 players, with last month’s runner up Steve Blackburn going undefeated for first place. Blackburn scored back to back wins over Paul Feltman Jr, first for the hot-seat and then in the finals, for the win.

With his 5th place finish combined with second place in February, Bobby Emmons has taken a 40 point lead on the “A” player points list. Oscar Avila’s 3rd place finish in this event helped him take a slim 20 point lead over Guyle Fielder on the “B” player points list.

The next event on the Diamond Pool Tour is 9-ball on the 7 foot Diamond Smart Tables at Stingers in Phoenix on April 11th - 12th.

Event organizers expressed their thanks to Mike & Julie Bates, as well as all of the great staff at Bullshooters, for hosting this crowd of players. Thanks also go out to Rick Schmitz for another batch of excellent photos and a great 5th place performance.

Skip & Jan’s Scotch Split

Junior & Sonia Flores were the couple to beat at Skip & Jan’s Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles event on March 21st.

Team Flores crushed the winner’s side of the 17 team event and took the hot-seat with a lopsided 7-1 win over Nick Cipiti & Heather Morvay.

Bill Norish & Tami Hathcock were making their way through the one loss side, but they would drop the semi-final match to Nick & Heather 7-6.

Considering the late hour, both teams agreed on a 60/40 split instead of playing out the final match.

Emmons & Aiardo Win Open Scotch

A smaller field than expected at Skip & Jan’s on March 7th led to a six team open scotch doubles round robin event that was dominated by Bobby Emmons & Spike Aiardo.

Although they were going to eleven, Emmons & Aiardo went undefeated and didn’t allow a single team to notch more than four racks against them all day.

The fight for second place came down to the teams of Jason Polk & Ben Suther-land and Jeremy Gibbs & Oscar Avila. These two teams faced off against each other in their final matches of the day, both tied at 3-1. That match went to Jeremy & Oscar 8-7 for second place.

Pool Instructor Directory Phoenix Tap League Sold

On March 1, Robert and Peggy Mallen of TAP of Greater Phoenix announced the sale of the leagues for both Maricopa and Pinal counties to John and Pati Muehling. John and Pati have both long been involved in Valley pool leagues starting with APA in 1992, BCA in the early 2000s and joined TAP in the Spring of 2009. “Pati and I are very excited about the opportunity to work with all the TAP players to grow this league and continue to have fun,” said John.

The league currently has 5 divisions: 3 In-House Divisions from Skip & Jan’s, 1 In-House at Bull Shooter’s and a new Travel Division in the East Valley. Cur-rent plans are to continuing growing its in-house divisions, while expanding the travel division in the East Valley, and adding a monthly tournament to the mix. “I think our players would love to see more tournaments. Scotch doubles, Jack & Jill, singles, 8-Ball, 9-Ball, even 10-Ball,” commented Pati. “We have the capacity to have those tournaments at least once per month, and are looking forward to making that a reality beginning in May.”

Shane Van Boening had won six of the last seven Andy Mercer Memorial events at the Rum Run-ner Lounge in Las Vegas. He took a break after his first win in 2009, which gave Ernesto Domin-guez the opportunity he needed to win it in 2010. Van Boening then won four straight, and looking for a fifth, joined 63 entrants in the $3,700-add-ed, 25th Annual Andy Mercer 9-Ball Classic, held at the Rum Runner Lounge on the weekend of March 21-21. In the end, at about 9:30 p.m. (Vegas time) on Sunday, it was Scott Frost, wire to wire, who claimed the 25th Andy Mercer title, defeating Joven Bustamante twice to do it. In a second-round battle versus Mike Massey that went double hill, Van Boening scratched on the final rack. Massey took ball in hand and sunk a 1-9 combination that sent Van Boening to the loss side. Massey followed soon thereafter and managed to work his way to the quarterfinals. On the winners’ side, Frost and Bustamante met first in a winners’ side semifinal, as Jason Klatt, who finished 4th in 2014, squared off against Sal Butera. Frost dominated the first of two against Bustamante 6-1, while Klatt was surviving a double hill battle against Butera. Frost claimed the hot seat 6-2. Butera moved over and picked up Massey, who’d defeated Max Eberle 6-3 and Johnny Kang 6-1. Bustamante drew Van Boening, who was work-ing on a four-match, loss-side winning streak. that saw him eliminate Oscar Dominguez and Rodrigo Geronimo, before defeating Jeff Schil-der 6-3 and Donnie Branson 6-2. It was the end of the streak. Bustamante ended Van Boening’s hope for a fifth straight Andy Mercer title, though it proved

to be a double hill thriller. Massey, in the meantime, was ending Butera’s week-end 6-4. Bustamante shut Massey out in the quarter-finals and completed his loss-side run with a 6-4 semifinal victory over Klatt, who improved his 2014 performance in the event by a single place/$500. The Frost/Bustamante re-match was on, and it lived up to advanced bill-ing. About a month ago, in Reno, NV, Bustamante had come out on top, finishing fourth in the US Bar Box 9-Ball Open Championship, while Frost settled for the three-way tie for ninth. Frost reversed the order for this 25th Annual Andy Mercer Memorial, completing his undefeated run with a double hill win in the finals.

Alex & Rico came out on fire in the first set of the finals and took a quick 4-0 lead. JR & Omar would fight back to make it a match, but in the end it was Alex & Rico with the 8-5 win in the first and only final set.

After a first round loss to Terry Osborne, Barber had beaten Billy Garrett, Paul Feltman Jr., Jerry Stuckart, Rod Elliott and Tres Kane. Barber would drop the semi-final match to Huth 2-1, to set up a rematch between Huth and Wright in the finals.

Huth rode the momentum of his win over Barber to a 3-1 win over Wright in the extended final match.

Tres Kane Wins Kolbys One Pocket

Tres Kane pulled out a final match win to top the round robin handicapped One Pocket event at Kolbys Corner Pocket on March 28th.

Kane held a 3-1 record going into his last match of the day, against Tucson’s Joe Watson. Watson was undefeated for the day, with a 4-0 record.

Kane would win that final match 2-0, leaving both players with an identical 4-1 record. The first tie breaker to determine the day’s winner was “head to head” record, and that gave the win to Kane.

High performance chalk

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

The industry has added quite a few brands and types of high performance chalk (HPC) op-tions in the last few years. Now if you thought I was going to compare or pick a favorite out of these, you can stop reading right now. I would not even know where to start with justifying the cost and measuring performance of all the HPC on the market today. Instead what has caught my attention is the fact that all HPC offer the ability to not have to chalk on every shot.Chalk-ing on every shot has been the advice of every pro and training professional article since I have been alive.

What I want to discuss today is the fact that HPC is changing our pre-shot routines. Whether for the better or worse, only time will tell. One of the biggest complants that I have heard so far with HPC, besides the cost, is the factor of not chalking on every shot gets the player going too fast.

A player’s stride or pace is an important part of the player’s performance. We have all seen Johnny Archer picking lint off the table or pro players that move balls from pockets. All of these techniques help them control their pace. I have recommended that players chalk with the opposite hand to ensure time between shots.

The action of chalking is performed so the leather tip does not slip off the resin or plastic balls now in the market, at impact. If this is not achieved, a miscue occurs.

Nevertheless, chalking can help pace, focus, confidence and it gives time for the video play back or envisioning the shot; all while chalk-ing.

If you have moved over to the HPC, do a self-evaluation. Are you playing faster and has it helped or hurt your game? It might be some-thing that has changed for the positive or nega-tive and you have not even noticed it yet.

NATURAL Talent

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

“Rocket Rodney made a post that made me think… all these chemical pool players. How there’s not many natural players left and unfor-tunately it’s a huge disadvantage when you’re not on adderall, uppers, or downers (pain pills). It’s sad to see SO many young players going that way. Look at my dad’s era, not many players left who are even alive let alone play-ing at his level. You guys know who you are, life is too short for that shit. Clean up and feel the pressure. Or have your body fail you in your 50s.” — Oscar Dominguez

The above, unaltered and unedited words of professional pool player, Oscar Dominguez, were made February 23, 2015 via Facebook and were in response to a prior post made by fellow pro, Rodney Morris, on that same sub-ject.

While I do recall reading Rodney’s post at the time, I have not pursued a new search for it in an effort to obtain a word-for-word quote from him; electing instead to simply tell you here that the essence of his post was a lamenta-tion of how difficult it is for natural players, like himself, to constantly try and compete against other highly-skilled players who calm their nerves through the use of chemicals. Oh, heck! Let me rephrase that without the politi-

cal correctness: It is difficult for clean players to compete against other highly-skilled players who medicate their nerves with drugs.

Substance abuse in pool is far from being a new issue. Pool players have been ingest-ing performance-enhancing substances since the game was invented. In light of that, we cannot limit our discussion to only the drugs mentioned in Oscar Dominguez’s post. We need to throw in a couple of the most common nerve-soothing drugs that have been, and still are, widely used by pool players everywhere: marijuana and alcohol.

Back in the day when I was an abuser of both marijuana and alcohol, I was a firm believer that I could not even begin to play a decent game of pool unless I was properly medicated beforehand. Even though it was true that the marijuana deadened my senses to extraneous distractions while the alcohol gave me “cour-age,” the real truth was, both were slowly destroying me. I came close to losing the things that were most important to me: my health and my family. So I gave up those things that offered only superficial, temporary rewards in favor of the things that offered meaningful, lasting rewards. (Later I learned that I could still play as well without drugs as I ever did

while using them; the concentration just didn’t come as easy as before.)

But I’m not here to condemn any of you who use drugs in order to gain an edge in pool. It’s your life, and you are free to live it any way you like. What I really wish to do here is to com-mend the players who do not rely on chemical crutches to help them play their best. As I’ve already mentioned, gaining and maintaining the level of concentration that is necessary in order for a player to reach peak performance is a very difficult task. So I think that any player who accepts the challenge of competing “on the natural” is a player worthy of some level of special praise.

However, before I leave anyone with the im-pression that I condone drug abuse by my unwillingness to condemn drug abusers, let me point out a couple of things:

Professional pool players have long complained that billiards does not pay anywhere near on a par with most other professional sports. Well, can you think of any other professional sport that does not perform regular substance abuse testing on its players? Why do you think they do that?

Ritchie & Draughon Win at Kittys

Ricardo Ritchie & Travis Draughon teamed up for an undefeated run through a field of ten teams at Kitty’s on March 21st.

Ritchie & Draughon scored a 6-0 whitewash win over Chad Metivier & Teri Curtis for the hot-seat.

On the left side of the board, Ricky Abril & Joseph Farias were on a three match winning streak. That streak would be stopped by Chad & Teri 7-3.

Chad & Teri raced out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set of the finals, but Ricardo & Travis came back to tie things at 4-4 and then win the match 6-5 for first place.

Vander Weyst & Moore Undefeated

Bill Vander Weyst & Randell Moore teamed up for an undefeated run through a field of fifteen teams at Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on March 28th.

Bill & Randell scored a convincing 9-4 win over Tony Yuzuik & Joe Wiley for the hot-seat, and got comfortable waiting for an opposing team in the finals.

Harold Lyons & Bernie Papa would be that team. Harold & Bernie had lost to Tony & Joe in the final four on the winner’s side, but made their way through the one loss side to earn a rematch with Tony & Joe in the semi-final match. That rematch would go hill-hill with Harold & Bernie winning.

The opponent didn’t matter for Bill & Randell, as they went on to defeat Harold & Bernie 9-5 in the first and set of the finals.

(Roger Long Article Continued from page 19)

It’s because they demand that their players be “naturally talented” if they are expected to pay those players big bucks. No help from chemicals is tolerated. Would all of pool’s professional players be willing to give up their crutches if sponsors were willing to pay them big bucks?

And what about The Olympics? Many people in the billiard industry, including players, have long maintained that pool should be included in The Olympics. But all Olympians are subject to stringent drug testing. Which of our top players would be able to pass the drug screening in order to be allowed to compete?

And one final thing: We have a successful (and still growing) juniors pro-gram here in Arizona. These youngsters are enthusiastic about pool and hungry to learn more all the time. But they are also very impressionable. They learn from parents and elders who the best players are, and then try to emulate those players. Think about that for a minute. At what age is it okay to tell kids that in order to reach the top levels of play they will have to do everything the top players do; including drugs?

Foos PulseFoosball News

By Jim King

Attention all Phoenix Foosers! Just in case you missed it, all of the souped-up hype linked to both the Hall of Fame Warm-up and the Hall of Fame Classic was lived out over the past month here in Phoenix and Las Vegas, respec-tively. In addition, the Spring 2015 Interim League has kicked off and it appears there has been no lessening of interest in what we’re all helping to develop here in Phoenix, that being an competitive and well supported foosball community.

HALL OF FAME WARM-UP RESULTS

This year’s HOF Warm-up was hosted by Jester’s Billiard’s in Gilbert and had players hailing from Colorado, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and, of course, Arizona, ranging in skill levels from Beginners to Pro Master. There were seven different events spread between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon, of which there were 124 teams con-tending to showcase their skills, or luck, and claim their spot in Arizona foosball history.

Following is a summary of the events and win-ners of each.

Friday night Draw Your Partner (DYP): Nick Bourdos & Holly MinnigExpert Singles: Eric SanchezOpen Singles: TJ Telles Amateur Doubles: Jeff Minnig & Rissa SalkeOpen Doubles: Evan Stachelek & Nick Bour-dosExpert Doubles: Jim Sherman & Johnny VallesSunday “Sh*t Talk” DYP: Pat Hutson & Evan Stachelek

Also, a funny thing happened during play at the Sunday DYP Sh*t Talk event. We all know how good Brian Salke’s 5-bar can be, right? Well, it’s hard to convey humor in writ-ten form, at least it is for me, but I’m going to share a moment that everyone should’ve have been there to witness. Due to the unique for-mat of this event there was a LOT of “smack” talk taking place. Evan and Pat were playing Brian and Guy and there were plenty of ‘color-ful’ one liner’s flying from everyone except Pat, who was focused on winning. During the match Evan was successfully passing and

defending his 5-bar with surgical precision against Brian. Just about that time a service dog that was on hand for the action (a cheery golden retriever named Travis), walks up and Evan blurts out “look…Brian’s seeing eye dog is here for his 5-bar”. I almost soiled myself as did a few others who were lucky enough to witness it. Thank you Brian for being such a good sport about me sharing this.

2015 HALL OF FAME CLASSIC RE-SULTS

The 2015 HOF Classic was a huge success with hundreds of players coming from 35 states and 4 countries, all of them vying for their piece of the $60K prize fund. Following is a listing of how the Arizona players placed in each of the events.

INTERIM LEAGUE

The Interim League kicked off on February 21st and continues to be a popular weekly event being hosted at a number of league sites

around the valley, Main Street Billiards in Mesa being a primary sponsor. Anyone in-terested in playing in this event or any other weekly tourneys should go to www.arizo-nafoosball.com and click on ‘Coming Events’ to confirm the location. The Interim League fills the void between seasons in order to keep us foosers from going through withdrawals from not getting enough table-time in. It fol-lows the same format as the league in that it’s a handicap format and it levels the playing field when newer foosers are playing against more experienced ones…so there’s no reason to keep any ‘wannabe’ fooser from participating in the fun.

After six events, Brian Salke is currently lead-ing the league with an overall winning per-centage of .898, with Ricky Chun (.840) and Ronnie Garrett (.806) are closest to surpassing him, with another 42 players in the hunt. As of March 25th, the handicaps ranged from .1 to 10 with the average being 3.9.

SPECIAL: CHAMPIONS OF SEASONS PAST

Given our recent exposure to new media, such as Arizona Billiards & Darts magazine, we thought it would be an excellent time to reprise some of our previous league highlights. Over the next couple months I’ll be reviewing some of past league championship teams in this final slot.

This month we’re showcasing the last two Foos Bowl winners: Foos Bowl XIII champs Jason Collicott, Daniel Blech, and Jacqueline d’Estries, and Foos Bowl XI champs Rulon Smith, Dustin Hubred, and Nart Novak. All six players on these two teams were clas-sified as rookies (three beginners and three amateurs), further demonstrating how well the handicap system levels the playing field and provides everyone a chance to win-it-all. Each team also gained their championship in an impressive manner; both of them won the extremely competitive and talented Eastern Conference division title to earn a first round playoff bye, and then defeated the strongest teams in the league to claim the title.

Once again, congrats to both teams!
