All Diamond Pool Tour players, please remember that the October tour stop, that was originally scheduled for Skip and Jan’s, has been been changed. The tour will instead, be at Bullshooters on Oct 3rd and 4th for big table 9-ball. The Skip & Jan’s stop has been moved to November. We have also scheduled the season finale for January 8th - 10th at Casino Del Sol Resort in Tucson. The updated schedule is available on page 27 this month.

As always, the SW Regional was a lot of fun. It was great to see so many players come together for the Lawrence Ybarra fundraiser. It never ceases to amaze me at just how well the Arizona Pool Community comes together for one of their own.

-Until next time Mike

Balancad Unstoppable at Knobbys

Burt Balancad played stronger as the night went on, and completed an unde-feated run through the field to win Knobby’s 9’s & Under 8-Ball tournament on September 11th.

Balancad started the night with a hill-hill win over Vito Leto, but things would get much less stressful after that. Back to back 3-0 wins over Mike Howerton and Chuck Parrill saw Balancad in the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Howerton built a two match winning streak, but lost to Parrill 2-0, and settled for third place.

Balancad raced to the hill at 2-0 against Parrill, but Parrill scored the first game win against Balancad in three matches. That one game would be all that Parrill would get, as Balancad won the finals 3-1 in one set.

Complete Payouts:1st Burt Balancad $1402nd Chuck Parrill $503rd Mike Howerton $20

The ListBased on “The List” from the TruTV reality series “The Hustlers”, the idea behind “The List” is a heirarchy of top players in the state, ranked by ability. Players on the list can challenge the player above them and take that spot if they win the challenge. Those who are not on the list, can challenge the #10 player for a chance to take that players spot.

While there are already lists for each different Arizona rating, we will try to keep you loyal readers as updated on the top list as we can. Players will change positions during each month, but as of press time, these were the players on the list. Please note that Scott Frost asked to be removed from the list as his prioro-ties are making this year’s Mosconi Cup team.

Pockets Pool & Pub in Tucson, Arizona was the site of the Diamond Pool Tour’s first “B” player hot-seat winner back in May. The September 10-ball event at Pockets was the site of the tour’s first “B” player forcing an “A” player to a second set in the finals. It was also one rack away from a second “B” player in the hot-seat.

The event, held on September 19th - 20th, drew a field of 45 players with 16 “A” players and 29 “B” players.

The “A” bracket saw Bernie Pettipiece grinding out one close win after another. Pettipiece started out with a 7-4 win over Gus Briseno and the matches just got tighter after that. Pettipiece’s last three matches - Nick De Leon, Bret Huth and Brian Reich - were won by a total margin of four games. Another player who stepped up in the “A” bracket at this event was Tres Kane. Kane had wins over Rudy Alameda and Jerry Stuckart, before dropping a hill-hill match to Reich. Kane would bounce right back with one loss side wins over Alameda, Bret Huth and Reich to earn his spot on the final bracket.

Tournament staff were warned ahead of time that the “B” players in Tucson played very strong. Those were not empty warnings. Tucson’s Ronnie Kidd III and Rick Galloway cruised through the winner’s side with only Kidd allowing one opponent more than four games against either of them. Kidd would take the hot-seat with a 7-2 win over Galloway, but Galloway would also qualify for the final bracket after a 7-2 win over Tonee Allin (Tuley).

The field of players boasted four female competitors, with Bernie Store quickly distancing herself from the others. Store’s 9th place finish earned her the Green-mail.com Top Lady Bonus of $100.

The two brackets came together on Sunday with Ronnie Kidd III taking Pettip-iece to hill-hill in a tough match. Kidd stayed with Pettipiece til the end, before Pettipiece won the case game. On the one loss side, Rick Galloway showed that he had no fear of any of the “A” players as he dispatched Kane in 4th place 7-5. Galloway would ride the momentum from that win to a hill-hill win over Kidd in the semi-finals.

The final match was an intriguing one with both players more known for their one pocket games than their rotation games. As the match went on, both play-ers were noticeably tired and opted for safeties instead of run-outs when faced with decisions at the table. Galloway would score a hill-hill win over Pettipiece in the first set of the finals, but Pettipiece would take control late in the second match and score a 7-4 win for his first Diamond Pool Tour win.

The Neil’s Garage Cabinets Second Chance Tournament on Sunday came down to two Tucson players as Mike Hamman defeated Aaron Purdy 3-1 for the hot-seat and 3-1 again in the finals.

Presenting Sponsor, Casino Del Sol Resort, provided vouchers for a two-for-one buffet to all players at the event.

With his fifth place finish, Brian Reich moves within 10 points of Bobby Em-mons on the “A” player points list. Joey Barrera remains on top of the “B” players points list, but he can certainly hear the sounds of Nick Kline and Oscar Avila gaining ground on him. Nick Kline is having no such problems on the Junior Points List, as he is far in front of the rest of the competition.

Tour organizers thanked Curtis and his great staff for putting up with us for the weekend. Lenny Marshall put together another great stream and was assisted by “The Voice of the Diamond Pool Tour” George Teyechea on commentary. Rick Schmitz was also in attendance and provided the tour and players with more great pictures.

Due to delays in Skip & Jan’s reopening, the tour has postponed the stop that was scheduled for Skip & Jan’s until November. The Bullshooters stop that was scheduled for November has been moved up to October and will take place on Oct 3rd and 4th. The event will be 9-ball on the 9 foot tables.

Rebecca Wagner made it a perfect “two for two” with her second win in as many appearances on the Arizona Woman’s Billiard Tour in 2015.

After a shaky 7-5 start over Claudia Justus, Wagner was untouchable as she won her next two matches by a combined score of 14-2 to advance to Sunday play on the right side of the board. Matching Wagner match for match, was Fort Worth’s Tara Williams. Williams had wins over Marcy Thomas, Bernie Store and Sara Miller on Saturday to remain undefeated.

Joining Wagner and Williams on the winner’s side after one day of play were Nina Tagley and Susan Williams.

On the one loss side, Store was mowing down the competition with her sights set on Sunday play. Wins over Sandi Wilson, Claudia Justus and Amanda Pul-ley were enough to get her there. Sara Miller, Jaye Succo and Justine Bishop would also make it to Sunday play on the one loss side.

Sunday matches saw Wagner and Tara Williams keep pace with each other as Williams beat Nina Tagley 7-5 and Wagner beat Susan Williams 7-2. Wagner and Tara Williams would face each other for the hot-seat, which was won by Wagner 7-4.

Sunday play on the one loss side saw Sara Miller eliminate Jaye Succo in 7th place, and then Susan Wiliams in 5th place. Meanwhile Bernie Store eliminated Justine Bishop in 7th place and then Nina Tagley in 5th place.

The rivalry continued between Miller and Store, with Store pulling out a 7-5 win this time. Miller had a chance to tie the score at 6-6, but missed a 9-ball that gifted the match to Store.

The semi-final match, between Store and Tara Williams, looked to be on its way to a quick finish with Williams cruising to a 5-0 lead. That was when things took a bad turn for Williams. Williams missed a couple of balls that she would have made early in the match and all of a sudden her “can’t miss” confidence was shaken. Store was more than happy to take advantage of the op-portunities and the match was eventually tied at 6-6. Both players struggled in the final game, but a miss on the 7-ball was all that Williams could take as she unscrewed her cue and congratulated Store for the win.

The extended final match started out close. Store took an early 2-0 lead, but Wagner came back to a tie at 3-3. The score would be tied again at 4-4 and 5-5 before Wagner took control and climbed to the hill at 8-5. A great 6-9 combo by Store brought her back within two racks at 8-6, but it was just delaying the finish as Wagner broke and ran the next rack for the 9-6 win.

The second chance tournament on Sunday saw Amanda Pulley bounce back from a loss in her first match to run the one loss side with five match wins and then defeat Tami Hathcock in the finals for first place.

The Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour will be back in action on October 17th and 18th at Pockets Pool & Pub in Tucson.

Assistant Tour director Tres Kane gave his thanks to Mike and Julie Bates, and the staff of Bullshooters for hosting and adding $300 to the main event and $100 to the second chance event, Jose Gonzales of Las Glorias Grille for add-ing $100 to the main event and his partner Kristie Ortega for running another fine event.

Where Is Pool Headed? The Wrap Up

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

In my last two articles, I identified three dif-ferent types of pool players: gamblers, non-gamblers, and social players. Now I’m going to examine the impact each group has on the pool community and attempt to use that information to predict the direction the sport is taking in this country.

For a place in which to gather information on pool and pool players, I can think of none bet-ter than Bull Shooters in Phoenix. By virtue of Bull Shooters being the largest pool room in the West – and with it hosting the greatest number of players on a daily basis – it offers a perfect base from which to study our sport. And with me being there six days a week, from opening until mid-evening, I am able to observe and interact with a broad spectrum of players.

Looking at the gamblers first we can see that there has been a lot of new activity in Arizona with this group, recently. Credit for this new activity goes to Ryan Anderson, who devel-oped a sort of “King-Of-The-Hill” challenge format which he adopted from a truTV series titled The Hustlers. Ryan began by making a list of the top ten money players in the Phoe-nix area (in his opinion) and ranked them 1 through 10. Then he established a rule that

stated that any player on the list could chal-lenge the next higher ranked player to try and take that player’s spot on the list. Of course, the idea is for each player to keep working his way up to try and become the #1 player on the list.

The reaction to Ryan’s list has been so over-whelmingly positive that he soon found it nec-essary to make a “waiting” list of players who can schedule challenge matches against each other for the right to be the first to challenge the #10 spot on the Top 10 list.

Once Ryan’s list took off, it didn’t take long for lesser-skilled players to want in on the ac-tion. As a result, we now have lists operating in the Phoenix area for 8s-only, 7s-only, and 6s-only. Not only that, Tucson players started their own lists, and they now have challenge matches taking place all over their fair city. In addition, some players in Las Vegas have heard about what is happening in Arizona and they are currently working on lists of their own.

Next, looking at the non-gamblers (average league players), I can tell you that they are get-ting stronger every day – both in number and ability. I remember 35 years ago, we had only two leagues in the valley to choose from: one

on the east side, and one on the west side. And both of them were independent leagues as there were no such things as nationally organized leagues back then. But today, in the Phoenix area alone, we have ACS, APA, AZPL, BCA, GPPA, NAPA, TAP, UPA, and VNEA; all of which, except for two, are affiliated with na-tional organizations. In addition to all that, the APA runs a league for juniors in the Phoenix area. Plus, practically every league has devel-oped their own website and Facebook pages in order to keep their players up to date on every-thing happening in their league.

And then we have the social players. When considering all of the choices that people have available on which to spend their recreational dollars these days, it’s a wonder this group hasn’t dwindled down to nothing. But thank-fully instead, the social group seems to not only be holding its own, it might actually be growing. During the daytime hours, on any given day at Bull Shooters, social players out-number serious players 2 to 1. And there would probably be more of them during the evening hours if it weren’t for the fact that almost all of the tables are always being used for leagues and tournaments.

Shut Up & Shoot

APA Phoenix Metro held its session ending Sum-mer 2015 Tri-Cities Tournament for 9 Ball on September 13th and 8 Ball on September 19th & 20th at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. This is the 1st step in the year long “Road To Vegas “ for teams hoping to win the prize slots awarded to the 5 winners of the City Tournaments in May and June 2016. It is also the awards and cash payout ceremony where there is over $30,000.00 to be given to the 3 top placing teams throughout the session. In addition to the money each one of the 50 1st and 2nd place teams receive tro-phies, plaques. In addition, $50.00 and a plaque are awarded to the 60 top gun winners for the session.

Over a two day period 32 teams battle for the right to compete in the Cities Tournament that is held once a year in June, right after the 3rd and final Tri-Cities event. APA pays for the teams that win at that Cities event to travel to and com-pete in the APA Team Nationals event that is held at the Westgate Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada.

Among the activities during this Tri-Cities event, there were many giveaways handed out by the League Operators that included cues and cases, DVD’s and other pool accessories. Raffles tickets were sold to benefit the APA Juniors division that helps send the qualifying kids to the Junior National event. Everyone played well, had some fun and we watched some great matches played. Congratulations to all the winning teams and all the teams that attended the tournament you were among some of the best teams we have. APA Phoenix Metro’s next Tri- Cities will be in Feb-ruary for the Fall 2015 session.

Phoenix sweeps the Preliminary Round to the U S Amateur’s Championship at Main Street Bil-liards on September 26 & 27th. Three Arizona players qualified to play in the U S Amateur’s Championship to be held at Strokers in Tampa Florida on November 6-8, 2015.

This year is the first time Phoenix hosted a women’s division for this event. 10 Ladies signed up for the event that was held on the 9’ tables. Ladies have been competing in the Finals in Florida for years in their own division, but this was the first time we had enough participants to have that division here in Phoenix for the preliminary event. Tina Hess, who plays out of Bullshooters in Phoenix, prevailed in an exciting finals race to 9 match with Crystal Lopez, also from Bullshooters.

In the men’s division, Karloz Chavez from Bullshooters and Stingers, and Chris Carpenter who plays in Maricopa won the two slots that were up for grabs in their division. All three will be traveling to Palm Harbor (Tampa) next month to compete with other players from around the country for the prestigious championship. Win-ners of that event will qualify for a spot on a 2016 pro event.

All three winners are members of the APA pool league, who puts on the U S Amateur Champion-ship. Any player from any league or pool affilia-tion is welcome to play in this singles event that consists of a non handicapped race to 7 games. The format is both 8 ball and nine ball, similar to the APA’s masters division. The player winning the lag at the beginning of the match chooses whether he wants to break or which game he wishes to begin with. If he chooses 8 ball, the contestants play 5 games of 8 ball and then finish

the 7 game race in 9 ball. One winner for every 16 play-ers in this double elimination tournament advances to the finals in Florida.

APA has been sponsoring this event since 1994 and it has grown every year. Those who enter this event will experience the highest level of amateur billiard play in the United States. Therefore, the U.S. Amateur Champi-onship is only intended for the finest amateur players.

The preliminaries are a preregistered event that players can only sign-up during a window from mid-April to the end of June. To sign up for next year’s event contact the Phoenix area APA league Operator or go to

The 2015 Southwest Regional Championships were held Sept. 3-7 at the beautiful We-Ko-Pa Resort & Conference Center in Scottsdale, AZ. The event featured six divisions including scotch doubles, singles, and teams, free HD live stream-ing with commentary, and a special 3-person scotch triples charity event.

Scotch DoublesThe event began on Thursday evening with 32 scotch doubles teams (64 players) competing for the title. After winning their first five matches, the team of JR Burkhart and Marcy Thomas found themselves in the hot seat awaiting a final opponent. That eventual opponent would be a team they had defeated in the 4th round – Jeremy Gibbs and Bernie Store. After that defeat, Gibbs and Store won three straight matches to earn a rematch against Burkhart and Thomas. However, the final match was a repeat of the first with Burkhart and Thomas claiming the title of 2015 Southwest Regional Scotch Doubles Champions.

AZ 6 & Under SinglesUtilizing the current Arizona rating system, 77 players rated as 6 or lower competed in the AZ 6 & Under Singles division which began Friday at noon. By Saturday night, two players remained undefeated to face each other in the hot seat match – Randell Moore and Becky Onnembo. Moore sailed to a 5-1 win and earned a seat in the finals. Onnembo then faced Gary Englehart who lost his 5th round match but cruised through the one-loss side with four straight wins to reach the semi-final. Englehart proved to be too much for Onnembo as he won 5-2 and earned a trip to the finals against the undefeated Moore. Engle-hart would have to defeat Moore twice in the true double elimination format. He looked sharp early and won the first set 5-2 to force a final and deciding set. Englehart’s momentum continued in the 2nd set as he won by a decisive 5-0 score and earned the title of 2015 Southwest Regional AZ 6 & Under Champion.

Men’s Singles97 men competed in the Men’s Singles division which began Friday evening. By Saturday night, Tim Daniel had earned his way to the hot seat with a closely con-tested victory over Brian Begay. Begay moved to the one-loss side to await another opponent. That opponent would be a player that had won six straight one-loss side matches – Nick De Leon. The momentum was with De Leon as Begay became his 7th consecutive victim by a score of 6-1. This set up what was sure to be an ex-citing final match between two local favorites – Daniel and De Leon. However, the match did not live up to the billing as Daniel exhibited terrific 8-ball skill and won easily by a score of 6-2 to become the 2015 Southwest Regional Men’s Champion.

Women’s SinglesThe Women’s Singles division began on Saturday morning and consisted of 36 ladies. By Saturday night, local favorite Bernie Store was the only undefeated player remaining as she awaited an opponent in the finals. Meanwhile, Sara Miller, who had lost her 3rd match to Keitha Nelson, won five consecutive matches on the one-loss side to earn the right to face Store in the finals. Miller would have to defeat Store twice. Unfor-tunately for Miller, Store would not falter as she cruised to a 6-2 victory over Miller and earned the title of 2015 Southwest Regional Women’s Champion.

Women’s TeamsTen teams consisting of 32 ladies competed in the Women’s Teams division which began on Sunday morning. Twelve hours later, Busted Racks was the only undefeated team and awaited a final opponent. That final opponent was a team they had defeated in the 2nd round – Your Mom. Busted Racks would not be denied as they capped their undefeated run with a 6-2 victory in the finals to become the 2015 Southwest Regional Women’s Team Champions.

Men’s Teams32 teams consisting of 143 men competed in the Men’s Teams division which began on Sunday morning. By Monday afternoon, Gunslingers, a severe underdog among the field, sat undefeated in the hot seat. Mean-

while, after losing their 2nd match to Highway 50 Nitemare, team No Mercy, who had been the perceived favorite among the field, fought through seven highly contested one-loss side matches to earn a trip to the finals. In the minds of many, this represented a David vs. Goliath matchup with No Mercy being heavily favored. However, reality diverted from perception once again with Gun-slingers winning the first set and earning the title of 2015 Southwest Regional Men’s Team Champions.

Law of the Land Benefit TournamentOn Saturday night, professional player and Arizona resident Scott Frost conducted a charity tournament for 34 year-old local player Lawrence Ybarra, who has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. 100 people participated in the event and 100% of the proceeds went to help Ybarra with his battle. Frost stated that over $9,000 was raised to help Ybarra and his 7 year-old daughter. An online fundraising campaign has also been created by Ybarra’s fam-ily. The strength of the social group is a really good thing for everybody in pool because it is the social group that spends the most money in the pool room. They buy drinks, they buy food, they pay the highest rates for pool, and it is from their ranks that new players are recruited into league play. If it weren’t for the social group, the serious players would soon find themselves out of places to play.

So where is pool headed? Well, if Arizona is any indication, it’s headed nowhere but UPWARD!

Player Profile - Dede Seamster Burum

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Cue I play with a J Pechauer Custom Pool Cue. I have had this cue since 2005 when a previous non-pool playing boyfriend walked into a bil-liards store and asked for one of the best cues, he wanted to surprise me. It was such a nice surprise.

Case I use a The American Poolplayers Association (APA) branded cue case. I love it because it’s red, my favorite color. An auction is held dur-ing all tournaments for the local APA. I tried and tried to win one but gave up and went to the APA site and bought it myself.

Break Cue I have a J Pechauer break cue that I bought myself this spring. I bought it to symbolize my freedom, freedom from illness and pride of getting through a breakup. Plus, my previous break cue was so hard to screw and unscrew I would have to ask for help, how independent is that?

Shapers I have two different shapers that I use when-ever I think I need it, which isn’t frequently. I do have my cues maintained and tips replaced when I need to. I’m friends with Doc who has his own side business taking care of cues.

ChalkI prefer the pocket chalk devices, although when I come to pool after work, I don’t have a pocket. I tend to flatten out the chalk when I use it. I will chalk before almost every turn, sometimes every shot as it helps slow down my game.

Anything else in the case I carry a pocket marker that is a pool ball hacky sack. I like it because if I ever were to get mad and throw it, I couldn’t hurt anyone.

Player bio I’ve been a pool player, very mediocre, for many years. Although I have had great coach-ing in the past, I still need to learn so much.

I started playing pool when I first moved to San Diego. I was taking golf lessons and my golf instructor took me to play pool. I preferred pool over golf due to the major time and cost savings of learning a new skill. I ended up in the APA when a waitress in a little British pub caught me playing pool by myself. She asked me if I was practicing for a tournament. After laughing I shook my head no. She then told me the bar owner was very interested in recruiting a team. Enough said, I went to my new company, recruited players (it was pretty amazing, I put the word out and people were coming to me). The bar was so happy to have us, we always got a round of drinks for free and he paid for professional coaching. Needless to say, we practiced there whenever we could get away from work.

I am the captain of an APA 8 ball and a 9 ball team. We play double jeopardy, so it is a once a week com-mitment. I love being the captain in World’s Largest Pool League. I feel I have strategy, team building and other personal strengths that help me as a captain. I am able to recognize other players strengths and weakness and can leverage that well.

I plan to work on get-ting the team back to Nationals again and to find a spot for myself in the Single National. The Team Nationals for both 8 and 9 ball are held in Las Vegas in August. Teams can win up to $25,000 in 8 ball and $15,000 in 9 ball. Single National event is held in the spring, also in Vegas. 8 ball champi-onship is $15,000 and 9 ball is $10,000.

Place you play I play at Main Street Billiards in Mesa. It’s a great place to play, I know the owners, the bar and wait staff, I always feel safe and welcome there. The tables are well maintained and all the tournaments are played there. It’s great to be used to the speed of the tables.

Favorite game and why I really enjoy 9 ball. I love the challenge of it and how much I have learned about ball posi-tion from it.

Best pool stories: I played in so many qualifiers trying to get to the Single National level. I finally made it in 9 ball as a 3. In the local qualifier, in the fi-nal I had to play against an 8. I kept my cool, remembered that he would have to make a lot of balls and that I knew how to play safeties. I played a few safeties and that was it, he lost his cool. The moment I was waiting for. I man-aged to beat him and earn my spot at the region-al pool tournament. Luckily, that one was in Phoenix and I was able to play and win with no drama. At Nationals, I didn’t win a match but it was still such an awesome opportunity.

League skill level Inside the American Pool Association system my handicap level is 4 in 8 and 9 ball both.

Why do you play pool? I play pool because it’s fun, social, challeng-ing and I get to know people from all different walks of life.

Barber Earns One Pocket Win

Chad Barber came back from a hot-seat loss to Gus Briseno and won the Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event on September 12th.

Both players made their way through a tough field of sixteen players, and it was Briseno scoring a 2-1 win over Barber to capture the hot-seat.

After a first round loss to Joe Watson, Harold Lyons forged a five match win-ning streak on the one loss side. That streak included notable wins over Bernie Pettipiece and Bret Huth. That streak would come to an end, at the cue of Chad Barber, in a 2-0 semi final match.

With the late hour, Barber and Briseno agreed on a one game match in the finals, with Gus giving Chad 10-6. Barber missed a ball on the hill that would have given him a 6-5 win, but refocused himself and won the game 6-6 for first place.

Stingers Three Way Split

The scheduled King of the 8’s and King of the 9’s event on September 12th at Stingers turned into one event dominated by the 8’s.

A small turnout led tournament director Sophia Morquecho to change the event to a single tournament with the 9’s giving a game to the 8’s in each set. That turned out to be more than the 9’s could fade on this day.

The final four players on the winner’s side were all 8’s, with George Bell losing to Frank Alvarez and Aaron Purdy losing to Burt Balancad.

Bell and Purdy would get back on the winning track with wins over Steve Stower and Pete Barrios respectively.

Back on the winner’s side, Balancad was beating Alvarez 4-2 in the 8-ball and then 5-3 in the 9-ball.

Bell & Purdy faced off to determine who would move on and who would end up in 4th place, out of the cash. Bell took the 8-ball match hill-hill, but Purdy came back and won the 9-ball match by the same hill-hill score. This left the two players facing off one more time, in 10-ball, to determine a final winner. That match was taken by Bell 3-1.

The semi-finals got started with Alvarez beating Bell in the 8-ball, but Bell quickly came back and won the 9-ball to force a 10-ball set to determine who would face Balancad in the finals. After a quick discussion amongst the final three players, it was decided that no one would move on to face Balancad. The players agreed on a three way split of the $760 prize fund.

George Bell, Frank Alvarez and Burt Balancad

Tucson’s Mike Bevins and Prescott’s Bryan Wilson were crowned as the King of the 6s and King of the 7’s on September 19th and 20th and Stingers.

Always looking for a unique new format, Sophia was at it again on this week-end with a “best two out of three sets” event, that had the players playing race to 4 8-ball and 9-ball, with a race to 2 10-ball set if the players split the first two sets. The players seemed to love the idea too, as Sophia had 28 six rated players and a full field of 32 seven rated players in attendance.

The 6’s event saw Tucson’s Mike Bevins turn in an undefeated run through the field for first place. Bevins defeated Willie Thompson for the hot-seat, but it was Jason Eimerman coming from the one loss side in the finals. Eimerman had lost to Bevins in the final four on the winners side, but he came back with wins over Adam Staerkel, Larry Randle and Thompson to earn another shot at Bevins in the finals. Eimerman would have to settle for second place on this day though, as Bevins won the finals in one set.

The 7’s event looked like it was going to crown Joe Chyzy as the victor, until Prescott’s Bryan Wilson came from the one loss side and double dipped Chyzy in the finals. Wilson lost to Chyzy late on Saturday, but came back with five wins on the left side of the board to earn his rematch against Chyzy in the finals. Wilson and Chyzy battled each other in the finals with Wilson winning the 8-ball and 9-ball sets by the same 4-3 scores. The second set saw Wilson win the 8-ball and then come out on top of a safety battle in the final game of the 9-ball for the double dip win and first place.

Esparza won two matches on the one loss side and then took the forfeit win over Partch to earn his place in the finals against Brinkman.

Ross & Leonard would go on to take the hot-seat with a hill-hill 8-5 win over Dennis Winkler & Randell Moore. On the one loss side, Dial & Riddle were on a four match winning streak. They would stretch that streak to five, with a 7-3 win over Dennis & Randell.

The final match went one set with Bob & Brad scoring a dominating 7-2 win over Dennis & Tammy.

The team to beat on the left side of the board was Amado Martinez and David Smith. After a second round loss to Johnson & Walsh, Martinez & Smith won four in a row to get their second shot at Tom & JW. They would make the most of that second chance, with an 8-3 win.

The final match would go one set, with John & Randell scoring a hill-hill win for first place.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News October 2015

In the early years of the Mosconi Cup, Team USA dominated over Team Europe. But that was then, and this is now. Team USA hasn’t won The Cup in the past seven years.

Speculation abounds as to why the USA can’t seem to win anymore, but one theory in particu-lar seems to make sense: that is, without strong sponsor backing, American players find it very difficult to take time away from chasing tourna-ment money in order to spend that time training with their team. In other words, they don’t have the necessary resources with which to prepare properly.

Mike Bates from Bull Shooters Billiards in Phoenix was recently made aware of this fact. Mike’s awareness came in a roundabout way as he had agreed to host a large dart tournament produced by RedEye Rhino, a prominent manu-facturer of sports apparel. It just so happens that RER’s sistem company, Ultimate Team Gear, has the contract to manufacture the uniforms for the Mosconi Cup teams, and they shared the revela-tion of the American team’s plight with Mike.

RER also shared something else with Mike: they gave him a quantity of specially manufactured Mosconi Cup chalk holders for him to sell, with the stipulation that all proceeds would go to Team USA.

Bull Shooters immediately advertised the “chalk-ers” on Facebook for the price of $10 each, and added the explanation that the money would go to benefit Team USA. It didn’t take long for a very good question to be brought up: Since both Mosconi Cup Teams are paid very well by Matchroom Sports, why were we trying to raise money for Team USA?

To find an answer to that ques-tion, I contacted Mark Wilson, the coach for Team USA.

Mark’s answer was both cor-dial and candid. He explained that while the team members are indeed paid well, there are many expenses associated with the preparation for The Cup that are not compensated by Match-room. This puts quite a burden on a coach who is already under considerable pressure to pro-duce a winner. Mark has taken it upon himself to try and find innovative ways to gain public support for the team; one of which is the commemora-tive chalk holders that Bull Shooters is selling. Mark paid for those out of his own pocket, and he would like to, at the very least, recover his investment.

Mark shared a few more details with me that I won’t go into here, but the “bottom line” is this: yes, Team USA could use our help. Europe can recruit team members from England, Germany, Spain, Sweden, and a host of other countries, all of which are loaded with great players these days, but America can recruit from where? Only the USA. Also, Europe enthusiastically supports their team, no matter which specific country each mem-ber comes from, and helps them perform as a team. It is a total team effort. Together they are, TEAM EUROPE!

But what are we? We have sat back and watched while our coaches, captains, and players have done the best they can on their own time and dime, and then criticized them when they failed. We seem to have taken the at-titude that the USA is the birthplace of pool and should, therefore, automatically produce the best players in the world, whether it be individually or as a team. We feel

that we shouldn’t be expected to chip in in any way.

But none of that is true anymore. Many other countries have adopted pool as a national sport and are supporting their players with coaches, training, and financial aid that puts them, as a group, on a higher level. While in America – the “birthplace of pool” and home to at least a half-million com-petition amateur players – we still shun the team concept at the professional level. We seem to put no value on teamwork or anything that does not offer us a direct reward. We, therefore, provide our professional players very little in the way of team support.

That needs to change. If the USA is ever going to win another Mosconi Cup, we will all have to find ways to become part of the team. Together we will have to be, TEAM USA!

-Roger Long
