Well, the Az Open Dart Tournament at Bullshooters was a madhouse. I am still getting used to the darts side of things and even stopping at that event for one day was an eye opening experience. Never seen so many dart players in one place before. We will have full results from the event next month. Very sorry to see The Ox close it’s doors last month. Hopefully this is a temporary thing and Rick & Julie can get the room open again soon. Until then, Kitty has agreed to run the pool tourneys that used to run at The Ox. I would like to welcome Celebrity Theatre to the paper. Anyone who likes music owes it to themselves to see a show at Celebrity Theatre. It is one of the most intimate venues in the valley and they have shows scheduled soon to appeal to almost any music fan. I am starting to hear rumors of a major pool event possibly on the horizon. Lets hope it comes together. -Mike

Balancad On The Snap at KnobbysKnobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday February 3, 2012. 16 play-ers came out to play for the total prize money of $400.00. Larry Eans and Burt Balancad battled it out for the hot seat. It was a close match but Burt won with a 2-1 win over Larry. Burt sat in the hot seat while Mike Howerton and Nigel Petty played for 3rd/4th place. Mike beat Nigel 2-0. This gave Nigel 4th place of $20.00.

Mike and Larry had a great match with Mike winning the first game and Larry making an 8 ball break on the second game. This third game was very close with Mike coming out ahead, giving Larry a third place finish of $70.00 with the side pot. In the final match Burt had an 8 ball break the first game. Mike won the second game bringing this to a hill-hill battle. Burt got another 8 ball break in the last game giving himself first place of $220.00 with the side pot and Mike second place of $90.00.

Congratulations to all the players who cashed in this tournament and a special thanks to Bruce and Carol for hosting this great monthly tournament. They always provide food for all the players, not to mention the 200% pay back. Knobby’s next open 8 ball tournament will be held Friday March 2, 2012 at 7:30 pm.

January’s monthly event at Metro Sportz Bar saw a showdown between Billy Coulston & Mike Bernardi to decide who would earn a place in the finals. Maybe that match gave each player a sense of respect for the other’s game as both players teamed up in February to win the Metro Scotch Doubles event on February 11th.

Coulston & Bernardi’s route to the win was not an easy one though, as they dropped a match to Hopell Ampongan & Gabriel Saenz midway through the event.

Ampongan & Saenz were playing together for the first time, and definitely played well together. They teamed up to make it to the hot-seat match where they faced off against the long-time team of Tom “Tommy Gun” Leutz & “Crash” Reddin. Tom & Crash trailed in the match 6-3 and 7-4, but came back back to win four straight games and capped it off with a 9-ball break at hill-hill to take the hot-seat.

Meanwhile, on the one loss side, Coulston & Bernardi were starting their journey to the finals with an 8-6 win over the team of Jack Mayer & John Sauer.

Coulston & Bernardi’s rematch with Hopell & Gabriel was pretty anti-climactic as Billy & Mike took complete control of the match early and never looked back. The final score was 8-2 for Coulston & Bernardi to earn them their place in the finals.

Coulston & Bernardi kept their hot shooting go-ing as they won the first set of the double elimi-nation finals over Leutz & Reddin 8-5.

Most teams would have been asking about a split

after the first set of the finals, but none of these four gentlemen was interested in second place.

Bernardi & Coulston came out strong to start the second set and raced to a 5-1 lead. This was nothing new for Leutz & Reddin as they have trailed in many matches before coming back to win, and they had the same plans for this match. Leutz and Reddin fought back to trail 5-3 and both teams started to tighten up as they each starting thinking about the finish line.

It was Bernardi & Coulston who got their nerves collected first and pushed their lead back to three games at 7-4. Things slowed down drastically in the next rack, but once again it was Bernardi & Coulston who collected themselves and finished off the rack for the 8-4 win and first place.

Payouts:1st Billy Coulston & Mike Bernardi $1,0602nd Tom Leutz & Crash Reddin $3503rd Hopell Ampongan & Gabriel Saenz $190

The Desert Classic Tour took a month off from the World Beater’s and brought thirty “B/C” (roughly 8’s and under) rated players to Skip & Jan’s in Tempe on February 18th and 19th to do battle on the Diamond 7’ Smart Tables.

The two players who pushed themselves ahead of this pack of players were Steve Murray and Jim Hendrickson. Murray had notable wins over Todd Dilley and Tucson’s Mike Hamman, while Hendrickson had wins over Junior Jiron and Jason Polk.

The hot-seat match went down to the wire with Murray scoring a 7-6 win over Hendrickson.

On the one loss side, Jason Polk had just elimi-nated Hamman and was looking for a chance at revenge against Hendrickson.

The match between Polk and Hendrickson was a story of shifting tides as Polk raced out to a 3-0 lead and it looked like he would run over Hen-drickson. Then Hendrickson took control and won four games to take the lead at 4-3. Next, it was Polk’s turn and he won two games to retake the lead at 5-4, before a Hendrickson win left the players tied at 5-5. Once again, the momentum shifted and Polk won the last two games to win the match 7-5 and earn himself a place in the fi nals against Murray.

The fi nal match all came down to the break for Polk. He won the opening toss, broke, scratched and watched Murray run out the rack. Polk would tie the score at 1-1, but that would be the last time he was that close to Murray. Murray took a 3-1 lead and stayed comfortably ahead for the rest of the match. Polk did all he could to try to stay close, but Murray got to the hill at

6-3. Polk won the next game for 6-4, but in a case of deja-vu, Polk scratched on his next break and watched Murray run the rack for the 7-4 victory.

The Desert Classic Tour has rescheduled their next stop to March 31st and April 1st when the big boys will come back out to play at Skip & Jan’s in a $1,000 added Bartable 8-ball event.

Final Payouts:

1st Steve Murray $6502nd Jason Polk $4003rd Jim Hendrickson $1754th Mike Hamman $1005th Junior Jiron $705th Jeff Hagan $70

APA held their Tri-Cities Tournament at Main Street Billiards on February 18th and 19th. Teams from all over the valley competed for their chance to play at the annual Cities tourna-

ment that is to be held at the same location over the weekend of June 16th and 17th. Eight teams from a field of 32 moved on to the next leg of a year long journey to play at the biggest tour-nament in the world, The APA National Team Championships. The National Championships that will be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas during the month of August will feature over 950 teams from around the country, Canada, and Japan. This tournament was named in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest pool tournament in the world.

The Tri-Cities tournament held this past month at Main Street Billiards is the first step in a series of what we call “The Road To Vegas” tourna-ments for our 5 player teams. APA runs league sessions 3 times per year that typically last from 14 to 15 weeks. At the end of each session, the 32 top performing teams earn a slot at our Tri-Cities Tournament. During the course of the two day weekend, the teams will compete until eight teams remain. Those eight teams then will qualify to play in the final step of the 5 player team series referred to as the Cities Tourna-ment. Eight teams from each of the 3 sessions will yield 24 teams that will play in this Cities Tournament, and the 3 winning teams from that tournament will earn a paid trip to Las Vegas and the National Championships. We have a similar tournament for our 9 Ball teams.

Other tournaments in “The Road To Vegas”

series include our 3 person team “Southwest Challenge Tune Up” that will send teams to a southwest regional tournament also held in Vegas. We also have tourna-ments that allow our Jack & Jill and Mixed Doubles 8 Ball and 9 Ball teams a chance to earn a spot in Vegas. Players that want to compete as an individual can enter a local qualifying tournament, advance to a regional Singles event, and then on to the APA National Singles Championships.

The weekend was full of unlikely heroes who stepped up under pressure and delivered. We had a lot of new players to the league this year and many of them were fortunate enough to make it to this tournament. This tournament seemed to belong to those newbie’s and the other lower skill level players. A lot of team matches were decided by the beginner and intermediate players.

Besides great pool, there was an abundance of fun with the free raffle drawings. APA League Operators Doug and Gina Nowlin gave away pool Cues and cases, along with many other Cue tools, towels and t-shirts to various players. All players involved in the tourna-ment received a raffle ticket at the beginning of the day and drawings were held all day on both Saturday and Sunday. The Awards ceremony was held at 1:00 on both days and trophies and payouts were awarded to the teams and players that earned accolades during the session. APA Phoenix Metro pays out over $60,000 per year to local teams and APA pays out over $1.6 Million at the National Team and Singles Championships.

The APA Phoenix Metro “Road to Vegas” tourna-ment series continued last month with two qualify-ing tournaments. First, on January 28th we held our

Southwest Challenge Tune Up, in which win-ners earn a paid trip to Vegas to play in the APA’s Southwest Challenge 8 ball regional tournament. Over 250 teams from all over the Southwest come to Las Vegas to play in a 3 person team for-mat held in March and October each year. The Southwest challenge is a uniquely run tourna-ment that often yields some interesting matchups between players of different skill levels. Each team has 3 players, and the team handicap cannot exceed 14. Each team can only have one higher level player with two lower level players. Once the roster is determined by the team, the rotation cannot be changed throughout the tournament. Since team matches are won when a team wins two individual matches all three players don’t always get to play in the match. When this hap-pens, that third player must lead off in the next team match. This can lead to a two or three level player facing a six or seven level player, and in a handicap system the lower level player can be very dangerous. Luis (Karloz) Chavez, Ed Rehana, and Mark Henry were the 3 person team that came out of the tournament winners. These three are regulars at Bullshooters and play for the APA on several nights per week. They will enjoy 3 nights paid room, their entry and green fees are paid and they’ll enjoy 3 days playing in a major tournament in Las Vegas. Good job Guys. The other tournament last month was our annual Valentine’s Day Jack & Jill Scotch Dou-

bles held at Main Street Billiards on February 11th. This is another popular tournament that sends the winners to Las Vegas to repre-sent Phoenix in an APA National Championship. Luis (Karloz) Chavez and Jamie Goodwin were the big winners in this tourna-ment. In addition to Trophies, Karloz and Jamie received $180 cash and the chance to go to Ve-gas. Second place winners were Joe Shipley and Heather Cathcart. Third went to Brad Andrews and Polly Hughes. Second and third place teams also received trophies and Cash. APA Phoenix Metro sends two Jack & Jill teams to the National Championships held in Las Vegas each April. One slot is received by the winning team at our annual Valentine’s Day tournament, the other is given to the winning team in our “Friday Night Date Night” held each Friday night at Bullshooters. This is a fun division that features two play-ers, (Boy-Girl) in a weekly league night format. The game is 8 Ball scotch doubles with singles matches included. This is a very fun division and everyone, whether you are a seasoned player or just a beginner, is invited to enjoy a fun evening play-ing pool in this or any other division that APA has to offer. If you are interested give us a call at 602-920-9192. Congratulations to all the teams going to Vegas this year and Good Luck.

Breaking to win.

By Jerry BriesathBCA Master Instructor

When most amateur’s break, they try to smash the cue ball as hard as they can and watch the eight ball to see if it is going in a pocket with little knowledge of what is really important to execute a good break. As their skill level increases, they become more aware of how important a good break is. When a top player breaks the balls, his eyes watch what the cue ball does. Whether he hits the front ball or the second ball, he wants to keep the cue ball under control as much as possible.

When striking the front ball, you must be sure to hit it dead center so there’s no energy left in the cue ball after striking the rack. If you break and see the cue ball carom to the left or right at high speed after strik-ing the front ball, you are not putting all of the cue ball’s en-ergy into the rack. Usually you

will be consistent and see the cue ball going left consistently or right con-sistently. If your cue ball consistently goes right at high speed after striking the front ball, start changing your aim slightly to the left to keep the cue ball under control.

If your cue ball goes to the right one rack and the left the next rack and to the right the next rack, you are prob-ably shooting too hard. Even though the best players break the balls at very high speed, they never shoot as hard as they can -- they take a little bit off their top power to control the cue ball.

And never, ever put spin on the cue ball on the break when striking the front ball.

There are many systems around the country for rating the skill level of players. One league system may rate players as A, B, C or D while another system may rate it’s players numeri-cally from 1 through 7 and still another may rate it’s players on the scale of 1 through 10. These rating systems are used primarily as a tool for handicap-ping players during league or tourna-ment play.

For the purpose of this article let’s use a rating system of 1 through 10 with one being a beginner and 10 being a very advanced player. When a begin-ner joins a league as a novice player, you will often hear that player talk about the diffi cult shots he made and how many easy shots he or she missed. As the player advances in the skill level to a three of four level, he or she starts to realize that making dif-fi cult shots is not what wins matches but rather missing easy shots loses most matches. They start to realize that when they miss easy shots it gives their opponent a free turn at the table

which becomes more costly as the skill level increases.

When I am coaching a player that has a six or seven rating, I give them a challenge of what is expected of them at that skill level. Here is the challenge: whenever the cue ball is on the same end of the table with the object ball and the angle of the shot is 45 degrees or less they must make the shot. If you miss one of these shots, be sure to practice it during the week so it does not happen again. What is important here is that you understand that missing one of these shots gives your oppo-nent that free shot at the table which causes most of the losses in league play.

APA Phoenix Metro held its session ending Captains tourna-ment on January 29th at Main Street Billiards. Some of the best players in the APA turned out to compete in this highly popular tournament that show-cases the talents of some of our best players. The competi-tion was very keen and all the players participating gave their best games. Dave Groves, the tournament director and creator of the tournament, said this is the fastest growing tournament in the area with the fi eld dou-bling in just two sessions. There were 42 players of all skill levels competing in the single modifi ed 8 ball tournament. This tournament was created to show appreciation to the players who have taken on the responsibility of captaining a team for the APA pool league. We just wanted to give them something special for their hard work, Dave said.

Kenny Williams stayed on the winner’s side of the board throughout the tour-nament and ultimately won 1st place, $210 and the traveling trophy that goes with the win. He will also have his name engraved on a plaque at Main Street Billiards. He played great pool taking down some of the best players out there. We would like to congratulate Kenny on his victory and the sportsmanship in which he showed in his matches. He’s a great competitor.

Second place went to Dave Groves along with $105 cash. Not only did Dave do a great job keeping the tournament fl owing smoothly, but he also managed to play some great pool.

Third place was split between Reed McKinley and Jamie Goodwin, each re-ceiving $50.

Jeremy Zastrow, last session’s winner, made a good showing to defend the trophy losing only to one of the third place fi nishers. Congratulations to all the participants. It was a great tournament and we are looking forward to the next session’s show. It will only be better.

Cole/Avila Split at Deli Sports BarThe Deli Sports Bar’s Saturday night 8-Ball tournament has been going strong for quite some time, and the recent change to a “9’s & Under” format looks to make the event even more popular. The short “race to 1” and affordable $5 entry fee leads to a quick night where anyone has a chance to win.

Thirty players took their shot on Saturday February 4th, and after Tyson Cole defeated Jason Junge on the one loss side, the finals came down to Cole and Oscar Avila.

Tyson would have to defeat Avila twice to earn first place, and he was halfway there before the two players put there heads together and decided they would both prefer half of the remaining prize money instead of playing out the last game to determine a winner.

Cole and Avila each earned $150 for the split, while Junge took home $20 for third.

While the Deli only has two tables at the moment, they are working on a room expansion which will leave them with room for two more tables. The extra tables should lead to longer races or expanded fields for this event in the near future.

Succo Wins Skip & Jan’s 6 & Under

Skip & Jan’s 6 and under 9-Ball tournament on February 11th saw 21 players vying for over $300 in prize money.

The hot seat match pitted Phil Anderson against Jaye Succo. After a see-saw battle, Phil won the hot seat. At the same time, Bernie Papa played Joe for 4th place. This exciting match ended with Joe claiming 4th and Bernie moving on to meet Jaye for 3rd.

Jaye, looking for a chance to meet Phil in the finals, defeated Bernie in a hill-hill match. For his efforts Bernie claimed 3rd place and $55.

The finals were a rematch of the hot seat match, Phil Anderson versus Jaye Succo. Jaye, not to be denied her first tournament win, went on to double dip Phil. For his efforts, Phil claimed 2nd and $80. Jaye took 1st and $169.

Natalie and her staff are to be commended for their great food, great service, and an excellent place to play.

Doc Rice and Tyson Cole separated themselves from the pack and ended up splitting first and second place at Main Street Billiards’ 2012 Tour-nament of Champions on February 25th.

While the field was smaller than expected, it did include such heavy hitters as Nick Deleon, Ben Sutherland, Oscar Avila, Tom Leutz and Jason Polk in addition to the aforementioned Cole and Rice.

While the field had more than it’s share of top players, Tyson and Doc’s play all day was a step or two above the rest of the field. Sometimes a bad roll at a crucial moment can keep a player who is playing great pool from advancing in a tournament, but that was not the case in this one as Rice and Cole advanced to the hot-seat match where Rice earned a 9-8 win.

Steve Stowers was making a habit of pulling out close matches on the one loss side as he won four straight matches after losing to Doc on the winners side. Stowers’ last two wins on the left side of the board were a hill-hill win over Jason Polk followed by a hill-hill win over local favor-ite Justin Smith.

Steve came out on fire in the semi-final match against Tyson and raced to a quick 4-0 lead. Just as quick though, Cole came back to win four of his own to tie the score at 4-4. From 5-5, Cole took control of the match and cruised to a 9-6 win to earn another shot at Rice in the finals.

The final match was a perfect example of the play that each player had been displaying all day. Neither player made many mistakes, but it was Rice who seemed to get the worst of the rolls all match. When Rice would make a mistep or get

a bad roll, Cole was more than ready to jump on it and make Rice pay. From a tie score at 2-2, Cole went on to win the match 9-3 in a score that was very deceiving considering the level of play from both players.

After the win in the first set by Cole, the players came together and decided to split first and second place. Since Rice had won the hot-seat, both players agreed to consider him the final tournament winner.

Final Payouts:

1st Doc Rice $5801st Tyson Cole $5803rd Steve Stowers $1904th Justin Smith $755th Jason Polk $505th Mike Bundy Jr. $50

Dave Fatum reaffirmed his position as the top lo-cal dart player as he defended his title at the 2nd GPMA Tournament of Champions held at Jimbos on February 25th.

Fatum had won the 1st GPMA event back in December at Big Daddys with a win over Pete Linaris and by virtue of their appearance in the finals of that event, both players earned invites to this event at Jimbos.

The rest of the eight player field was determined at a qualifier held at Bullshooters in early Febru-ary. Those six spots were filled by JC Martinez, Kix Alcala, Dave Wilderman, Bob Castillo, Rick Breckenfelder and Rick Kerska.

With the field set for the main event, play got underway bright and early at Jimbo’s.

The owner of Jimbo’s, Randy Herbison, along with Jerry Shasteen (Troy Vending) had all the boards perfectly spaced and in solid working order. Kelli Wise, Tom Hicks and Jay Moredock did a superb job of setting up the shooting orders & keeping track of the games, as the tempo was moving at a blistering pace! It was very difficult to focus on just one specific game, while 7, 8 and 9 marks were landing on almost every board at the same time. The Race to 7 Wins was well on its way!

The high MPR of the day went to Dave Fatum with a 7.75, against Kix Alcala, who battled back with a 6.33, truly a game that was nothing short of amazing. As the shoot progressed, it came down to two, very seasoned shooters. It would be Dave Fatum vs. Rick Kerska for the finals, which would be a Race to 9 wins.

It went back and forth (2-2) when the Scorpion made a 3 game run on Kerska. It continued back and forth, but Dave, with all his tournament experience, held on to win it, 9-5.

Congratulations to Dave “The Scorpion” Fatum on a job well done. Thanks again to Jimbo’s bar for hold-ing this event. Keep your eyes open for future GPMA events; whether you play steel, weekly league nights, or just chase Tournaments, the GPMA is always looking for competitive talent that wants to play at the highest

levels.

Qualifier Tournaments to enter are held randomly, so check with the GPMA Facebook page, (http://www.facebook.com/pages/GPMA-Dart-Tourna-ment-Page/333848519975166 ) your local bars, or contact Tom Hicks / Rick Kerska for more details on how to compete in future events. ([email protected])

Mike, I read where another writer stated basically that all sandbaggers are cheaters, what is your take on this?

I have written numerous ar-ticles on this subject over the last 20 years or so and I still feel the same. Are they all cheaters?

And what exactly constitutes a “Sandbagger?” Is it throwing off to get your stats down to get more handicap? Is is arguingwith the guys at the Arizona Open, telling them how bad you are to get in a lower level?

Or is it simply letting a league such as Medalist give you a free reign to do so? Of course

they are not all cheaters. Most are competitors trying to get an edge. Is itright? Of course not. But for over 20 years Medalist has let it happen. You go in as an 8 and shoot a 12, you move to a 9 and shoot a 12, you move to a 10 and shoot a 13, you may get bumped or kicked out, but you are doing so with $8,000.00 in your pocket.

Is Medalist the only league that this happens in? Of course not. But most leagues you get paid out each season, and don’t have to travel hundreds of miles to get money you deserve. Our Master’s league gets $2000.00 for first place,

Why would anyone sandbag, you can’t or you won’t get picked next season.

Are you taking advantage of the sys-

tem that has been in place for all these years? Yes. Are you cheating? Not by the standards they have set.

I was in the first meeting when Med-alist was coming to town. It was at Rick’s Black Bull, It was Rick, Steve Davis, Lee Pepard and myself. The max for two people was a twenty. I couldn’t shoot with any of my team-mates because we were too high. They said just have your stats at a 10 or be-low and you can shoot together. These were the guys bringing Medalist to the valley telling me this. I said sorry, not for me.

At the AZ open several people should be embarrassed at the way they whine about the level they are in.

Are there mistakes? Heck yeah.

Years back I remember one player won level 3 in a tough match, and the response to the person they beat was, that guy should not be in this level, he is too good.

In closing, to label all “ Sand-baggers” cheaters is ridiculous, and if a league lets it happen and everyone is doing it except a very few, I understand why it happens.

These are just my opinions and I may be wrong, but I doubt it…

thanks all the players and league operators for the success of the

Southwest Pocket Billiard Championships.

With the 8’s at Metro Sportz Bar on Febru-ary 11th for the Monthly Scotch Doubles event, the decision was made to allow 8’s to play in the regularly sched-uled weekly 7’s & Under event. That decision proved fruitful for Burt Balancad, as he split fi rst and second wuth Manny Morales.

The tournament looked like a reunion of west side barbox pool with some players making their fi rst tournament appearances in quite some time. The fi eld included such veterans as Felipe Salazar, Don Burns and Jim Murphy. They were joined by the regular Metro crew that included Tim Rachu, Bernie Store, Oscar Avila and Leo Satterwhite.

Balancad and Manny would meet up for the fi rst time in the hot-seat match, where Burt scored a comvincing 6-2 win over Morales.

Manny took the trip to the one loss side, but didn’t stay there long as he elimi-nated Leo Satterwhite to earn another shot at Burt in the fi nals.

Manny would get a game on the wire in the 6-5 race, but would still have to beat Balancad twice in order to capture fi rst place.

Manny notched the 5-5 win in the fi rst set of the fi nals and the two friends decided to split the tournament from there.

Manny and Bert both collected $70 each, while Satterwhite settled for $20 in third place prize money.

We have all heard the story: “Pupil learns what teacher has to offer and then eventually becomes greater than the teacher and moves on”. Well how about the story of “Pupil steps up to beat teacher and then teacher unceremoniously slaps pupil back down to reality”? That might be a more accurate description of the happenings at Preacher Ronn’s February One Pocket event at Kolby’s Corner Pocket in Tempe.

The heavy hitters in this one included Gus Bris-eno (who is taking a little time off from dominat-ing every tournament in the state), Tres Kane, Eric Young, Brett Huth, Brian Reich, Preacher Ronn, Scott Frost and “Fast” Lenny Marshall.

While Lenny has always been a dangerous player on the table, he has certainly appeared to elevate his one pocket game after filming and producing Frost’s Power One Pocket DVD. Lenny has been displaying a Power One Pocket game of his own and has knocked off quite a few experienced one pocket players recently. This tournament would be no exception with Marshall sending Jim Galati and Briseno to the left side of the board.

At the same time, Frost was having a typical Scott Frost day as he gave up big spots to players and sent them packing (including an 11-4 spot to one player).

Marshall and Frost met up for the hot-seat and it Marshall who sent Frost to the west side of the board after a 2-1 victory.

Frost found Brian Reich on the left side of the board and Reich putting on a shot. After a first round loss to Eric Young, Reich had won four matches (including wins over Briseno and Tres Kane). Reich would have to settle for third place

as Frost derailed Reich’s comeback bid sending Reich to the rail to look for action.

As the story usually goes, the final match would be where Marshall triumphantly defeats Frost one more time and goes out into the world looking for tougher opponents to test himself against. Unfortunately for Marshall, Frost was not ready to hand over the torch just yet.

Frost brought a little “Power One Pocket” of his own

to the single set extended final and dominated the match with a 3-0 victory to capture first place,

Frost took home $215 for first place, while Mar-shall settled for $110. Brian Reich earned $65 for his third place finish.

The March One Pocket event has been moved to March 24th so as to not compete with the Desert Classic Tour Stop on the 31st and April 1st.

Teacher Too Much For Pupil At Preacher Ronn’s

Bullshooters drew another full field of sixteen one pocket players for their One Pocket Madness event on February 11th. This day belonged to Brett Huth who made his way through the field undefeated for the tournament win.

The field was a tough one, includ-ing such notables as Preacher Ronn, Tres Kane, Bobby Emmons, Bernie Pettipiece, Gus Briseno, Mike Pankoff and Rod Elliott. The field showed that they were not that im-pressed with Pettipiece’s recent triumph at Derby City as they sent him to the rail after just three matches (losses to Elliott and Pankoff).

Huth navigated the right hand side of the board and scored a 3-2 win over Kane for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Jim Galati was making more than his share of noise. Galati had lost his first match to Bill Garrett, but had won five straight on the left hand side of the board. Galati’s impressive run was finally brought to an end by Kane. Tres trailed the match at 1-0 early, but came back to win the last two games.

After the comeback win against Galati, Kane faced off against Huth with a chance for revenge from the hot-seat loss. That revenge would not happen thought as Huth won the final match to remain undefeated for the tournament win.

Huth earned $230 for first, while Kane pocketed $250 with the side pot. Galati took home $110 for third and Rod Elliott finished in fourth for $70.

Fifteen scotch doubles teams came to Kitty’s on February 25th ready to do battle for over $800 in prize money.

The hot seat match pitted James Lewis and Jason Barkad against Leo Sat-terwhite and Joseph Farias. This hill-hill match ended with James and Jason winning the hot seat.

After coming through the one loss side, Ray Saban and Ben Olsen found them-selves facing Leo and Joseph for 3rd place. After a great match, Ray and Ben claimed 3rd place and $140.

By the end of the evening, Leo and Joseph were facing James and Jason in a rematch to decide 1st and 2nd. James and Jason played like they were on a mission, pulling out all the stops. James and Jason claimed first, while Leo and Joseph settled for second.

For their efforts, James and Jason captured the first prize of $470 and Leo and Joseph went home with $280 in second place prize money.

As always, Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and excellent service.

John Sauer bulldozed his way through the field and earned revenge against the only player who beat him to win Kitty’s Monthly 7’s & Under 9-Ball Tour-nament on February 4th.

As the field was filling, it looked like the early favorites in this event would be George Bell and Jimmy Brewer. Both Bell and Brewer were drawn into the same half of the brackets and both players were sent packing to the one loss side by Sauer early in the event.

The other side of the board saw Mike Howerton making his way through the field to face Sauer for the hot-seat. Mike would hold off Sauer to win the hot-seat 7-5, but that would not be the last time Howerton faced Sauer on this day.

The one loss side featured two “family matches” as Bell defeated his better half Donna Taylor 7-1 and Brewer bounced back from a 3-1 deficit to get the better of Jenelle Hodgkins 7-3.

After the win over Hodgkins, Brewer went on to eliminate Bell in 4th place in a close 7-5 match. Brewer would be eliminated next by Sauer 7-4.

The finals saw Sauer score 7-5 and 7-6 wins over Howerton to notch first place and earn $250 in prize money. Howerton would settle for $120.

Kitty to the Rescue

With the unforeseen closing of The Ox in mid February, Kitty immediately stepped up to hold the monthly 12 and under scotch doubles tournament. 24 teams came out to test their skills for over $1,500 in prize money.

The hot seat match found J.R. & Jaye Succo against Chuck Bobbitt & Jim Di-gregorio. At the end of this hill-hill match, J.R. & Jaye came away with the hot seat.

After losing their first match, Leo Satterwhite & Dan Young came all the way through the one loss bracket to meet Chuck & Jim for 3rd place. Not to be denied, Leo and Dan won this hill-hill match for a chance to meet J.R. & Jaye in the finals. For their efforts, Chuck & Jim claimed 3rd and took home $245.

The finals pitted J.R. & Jaye against Leo & Dan. After a grueling match, J.R. & Jaye came away with 1st and took home $795 for their efforts. Leo & Dan won 2nd and received $410.

A special thanks to Kitty and her staff for stepping up in the crisis and providing a great place to play and excellent service.

Dan Young, Jaye Succo, Leo Satterwhite & J.R.
