Revealing the Illusion

Page 5: Ashley Clayton Design Portfolio
Page 6: Ashley Clayton Design Portfolio

When acting, dancing, music and set design come together an illusion is created on stage to tell a story. This performance arts building reveals the illusion that is brought to the stage through a program consisting of a central lobby space that acts as a connection between the class rooms and theater. Classrooms with glass walls look into the lobby space onto the theater in order for students to have a sense that their education has a larger end result while also allowing visitors to get a behind scenes look of the theater.

The theater was just not a programmatic design problem but also a lesson in integrated building systems. Systems such as HVAC and structural support the concept of revealing the illusion through structural elements that can be viewed on the interior rather than the exterior and with visible HVAC components.

JOPLIN,MO REFLECTION CHAPEL

A Journey To Recovery

Page 11: Ashley Clayton Design Portfolio

This chapel located in Joplin, MO acts as a sanctuary for people of the city and visitors to reflect both on the

current state of the recovering city and the destruction that occurred due to the tornado. When entering the chapel a large glass, steel and wood structure gives visitors a view on to the park providing a place to reflect on how far the city has come since May, 2011. When walking further into the chapel visitors then enter a slashed corten structure that is a place of reflecting on oneself and the past. This rusted portion of the building alludes to the destruction of the tornado on the outside, but the dim interior space lit by the piercing

CONGAREE SWAMP WATER RESEARCH LAB

Manufacturing Nature The research lab’s form is three joined buckminsterfullerenes or “buckyballs”, and when heated can contain a single water molecule in order for H2O to be studied in its purest form. Parametrically constructed the water research lab is an example of how natural forms can be reconstructed and manufactured digitally. Like nature the research lab is ever changing and can be dissembled and reassembled in different locations and configurations. The model of the research lab was constructed form templates made in Rhino and then laser cut. The base , which mimics the uneven swamp land, was made by CNC’ ing a wood base and then filling the it with clear polyester casting resin to mimic water.

Encompass promotes preservation by bringing awareness to historical objects in a way that is meaningful to modern society. “The Silk Toad: Connecting Countries and Beliefs exhibit promotes both a better understanding of the historical trading route along with a the history of major religions that are prominent in todays society.

The circles in the design represent different religions spread along the trial. I chose to use a circle due to its infinite shape. Compared to the circle xs are used to represent locations , or tangible areas of the Silk Road.

This project consisted of developing a layout for display panels, pedestals and seating in order to transform the existing circulation space into an art gallery. By using the display panels as dividers new siting spaces were formed from the once open lobby area.

BODEGA, MEN’S SKIN CARE SET

This project was developed by selecting one color and then creating a color board that inspired a theme. A muted turquoise color lead to the selection of two additional colors which drove the design centered on Art Deco era Cuba. This initial concept developed into a final men’s’ skin care line packaged in a cigar box.

A Tale of Giving

The Lonely Wolf

As the ground slowly thawed and the stark twigs of plants began to grow little green bloom telltale signs of rebirth and activity associated with the upcoming holiday: Valentine’s Day. As the forest buzzed with the anticipation of creatures big and small the Lonely Wolf crept further to the back of her den. It was not that she did not like the holiday; it held great mean-ing to her and all other wolves. Stories have been passed on for generations of wolves about the Lupercalia festival held in honor of the she wolf that raised two human cubs, which later became the holiday that both humans and creatures celebrate far and wide, quickly forgetting the origins of the holiday they hold so dearly to their hearts while recreating hearts. But as humans forgot their gratitude toward wolves for saving of their own kind they gradually began to see the wolf as a threat, leaving the Lonely Wolf and others like her without a pack. After spending many years howling in search for a companion the Lonely Wolf accepted the fact that she was the only one of her kind left in her part of the wood so she decided to find company in the other creatures of the woods. But as she approached the rabbits, deer, porcu-pines, birds, mice and even snakes of the forest she realized that her sad howling had scared the creatures to the point they would not even approach her. This greatly upset the Lonely Wolf, she made sure to always keep peace in this part of the woods by not hunting in the area but the an-imals were still afraid of her sharp teeth and lonely howl. Gradually Valentine’s Day became the Lonely Wolf ’s least favorite holiday for she had no one to receive or exchange the heart shaped sentiments she loved so much. Two days before Valentine’s Day laying at the back of her den Lonely Wolf heard two mice talking excitedly about the amount of valentine’s the were going to pass out. Knowing that she was not on these mice’s list of valentines she grew even gloomier, but she still listened closer and as the mice rattled of their extended list she realized that most of the recipients of their paper statements of friendship and love were but mere acquaintances. This made the Lonely Wolf re-alize that these mice took joy in the action of giving rather than receiving, this was made blatant when the mice named the grouch old owl that never had much to do with any activity within the forest. Then it dawned on the Lonely Wolf that she might gain some trust of the other creatures by handing out valentines of her own, even if she may not receive any. She went to work immediately, gathering all the twigs she could find she made hundreds of little wood 3d hearts with little quotes etched on each twigs. Then the night before Valentine’s Day she crept quietly to the front of each creatures home and left her little valentine. The next morning began like any other Valentine’s Day, shouts of joys and thank you rang out across the forest and the Lonely Wolf woke up to no valentines of her own, but this is what she expected. But slowly a buzz took over the forest; the animals were in awe over the wolf ’s creation. With great hesitation the mice the wolf over heard the other day approached the wolf ’s den. As the wolf neared the entrance to meet them she noticed the mice did not even flinch when she got close. They handed her a valentine, thanked her for theirs and praised her for her creation and insisted she join the festivities later that night and teach them and the other forest creatures how to make her unique valentines. As it became night the Wolf soon became anxious because she did not know how the other forest creatures would react to her being at the party. But right when she arrived she was met with thank yous and soon she had a whole handful of valentines from the other animals. They all insisted she teach them how she made them and for her to tell them the stories of the Wolves’ Valentine’s Day because they had only heard rumors (which had grown into tall tales of sacrifice and death) now the wolf had a better understanding of why the animals did not want to go near her. As the night ended the Wolf was quickly invited to many of the animals homes latter in the week, she even had to turn some down for she was already booked for that night. After a long nigh the wolf reached her den and noticing at the entrance a delicate heart made from dandelions and with greater observation the wolf realized she had received a valen-tine from every creature in the forest, even the Old Grumpy Owl.

The “Story of the Lonely Wolf ” is a tale of a wolf who never receives valentines from fellow woodland creatures due to their fear that she might eat them. But this does not stop the Lonely Wolf from giving valentines herself, which ultimately leads to the wolf receiving valentines from all the inhabitance of the forest. The design of the valentine is driven by the concept of “paying it forward” as told in the story. The first receiver of the valentine is given the “The Story of the Lonely Wolf ” in an envelope. This envelope can then be peeled away and separated to reveal leaf shaped valentines. These valentines are made from seed paper, so once the next recipient receives them they can be planted, keeping the story of the Lonely Wolf alive.
