PROBLEMS ARE NOTHINGIn life, something that stops or

bothers you is a problem. Every-one has similar problems likethose of relationship, job/finance,health, and big worries about

the country. The mind stuck in a prob-lem is a disturbed mind. Its five indi-cations are sadness, bitterness, rest-lessness in the body, lack of coordi-nation in the body and irregular breath-ing. When you are happy your incom-ing breath is longer, but when you aresad your outgoing breath is moreprominent. Our mind is troubled be-cause it is dwelling in duality and adivided mind is misery.

Problems will disturb your mindand make you unhappy if you lackthe following: Tapa (penance), Vairagya(dispassion), and Sharanagati (sur-render). Tapa means agreeing withthe moment, total acceptance of pleas-ant or unpleasant situations. Vairagyameans I want nothing and I am nothingand Sharanagati means “I am herefor You, for Your joy.” If you are grum-bling then these are lacking, because

when you accept the situation youcannot grumble. When you take it asTapa you will not grumble; when youcome from a state of dispassion (“Idon’t want anything”) you don’t grum-ble and if you are surrendered youwill have no complaints. So, all threepurify your mind and uplift you injoy. If it does not happen willingly itwill happen in desperation. First yousay, “Nothing can be done.” Then inanger and desperation you say, “I giveup, I want nothing, I have no choice”

However, you can solve problemsby, firstly, not having the problem atall. Know that life is too short to keepsolving problems one after another.Just wake up and walk ahead, problemswill get solved by themselves. The sec-ond thing is to willingly accept theproblem and see it as a challenge. When you think that a problem cannotbe solved then it is no longer a problem;it becomes a fact. For example: Supposethe problem is that the ocean in Norwayis too cold. To solve this, you cannotheat the ocean. Hence this problem

cannot be solved. Now, it no longerremains a problem, it becomes a fact.

Only when you are searching for a so-lution is there a problem and so thereis no problem that cannot be solved.Things like doing spiritual practices, listening to people who have moreproblems than you, serving them canhelp uplift your mood. If all these donot help, then try going to the mentalhospital. Look at the patients thereand Thank God that you are not there. If that also does not work for you thengo to a crematorium. Look at all thebodies that come every day. Know thatyou are also going to end in the sameway one day. So what is the point inworrying?

Third, know that the problem is aboogey man, it is not real. Fourth, know that nature has provided youthe solution even before giving youthe problem. When it snows, thereare no bacteria since no herbs to healyou grow in that season. In the spring, the herbs come first and then the bugs.In the summer, the shade comes beforethe summer sun gets strong. So, naturetakes good care of you. And solutions

will come to you when you are calmand collected, you use your intelli-gence, are active and have strong faithin the Divine law.

Problems help us move from im-perfection to perfection. A seed con-tains the tree but the seed has to ceaseto be a seed to become a tree. Neitherthe seed nor the sapling is perfect. Ithas to cease to be a sapling to becomea tree. So, in life you can either seeimperfection at every step, or you cansee a movement from one perfectionto another perfection.

Every problem, once solved, be-comes an experience and each expe-rience completes you. In the progres-sion of life, you will leave behind everyexperience saying, “This is nothing.”Anything that is completed loses itsimportance. That is to say it leads youto void or nothing. A sign of intelligenceis how soon you arrive at this under-standing. Examine everything in lifeand say “This is nothing”. What re-mains after all that is Love, and thatis everything.

629 candidates waitfor teacher postingsTo protest at Freedom Park on October 10

L RaghunandaBangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: Minister for higherprimary, secondary educationand collegiate education Vish-weswara Hegde Kageri keepspromising all that vacant teacherand lecture posts in the statewould be filled whenever theimportant question arises.

But there are already 629 se-lected candidates, who passedthe Karnataka Public ServiceCommission exam last year, wait-ing in the wing to be recruitedat government schools and com-posite pre-university colleges. They cleared the exams last year.

It was in 2008 that the KPSCcalled for teachers’ examinationsfrom candidates who had clearedBEd and MEd. The 629 clearedtwo stages of examinations, pre-liminary and mains, and thenviva to be eligible for recruit-ment.

A year after clearing the ex-ams, these candidates have beenrunning between the KPSC office, education department andcourts, fighting for their appoint-ment.

They have asked Kageri to fillup at least 25 percent of the va-cant posts in government schoolsand colleges so that they couldbe recruited.

Two of the candidates, whohave been deprived of jobs, toldBangalore Beat, “The KPSC ad-vertised for the examination in2008. The written test was in2009 and we cleared the inter-

view in 2010.”P K Anil of Govindrajpura vil-

lage in Tumkur taluk said, “Idon’t know why the KPSC is tak-ing such a long time to fill upthe vacant posts. I am from a

poor family. I did not pay a singlerupee at the examination stageor for the interview. But this waithas been excruciating.”

J Venkatesh of Periyapatnataluk of Mysore district criticisedthe attitude of the Kageri. “Lastmonth, we wanted to meetKageri. We waited, but he didnot even hear us out. Educationdepartment officials too havebeen negligent.”

He said, “But there is no unityamong the selected candidates. We have not managed to ap-proach the minister or the edu-cation department together. Many candidates have lost allhope. We will wait till October10 for the minister to fulfil ourdemand. If not, then we will callfor a strike and all the 629 of ushold dharna and fast at FreedomPark.”

The government seem onlyinterested in promoting theteachers, but not appointing newones. Some of these teachers, who have been serving for long, are also aspiring to be membersof legislative council, for whichthe election would be held soon.“Even these teachers, who wantto be in the race, have not shownany support to our cause. Theyprobably do not want to rub theminister and other politicians inthe wrong.”

India, in its appeal before thePortuguese Supreme Court, hassaid the interpretation of theHigh Court of the trial in variouscourts of the country was notcorrect.

In its affidavit, India has as-sured that the fresh charges lev-elled against Salem, a key ac-cused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts

case, attracted less jail term thanthe offences for which he hadbeen extradited, official sourcessaid in New Delhi on Tuesday.

In its plea, which will sooncome up for hearing, India hasasked for a stay on the Por-tuguese High Court order, thesources said.

Lisbon High Court had on Sep-tember 19 allowed the plea ofthe extradited gangster, beingtried in eight criminal cases in-cluding the 1993 Mumbai serialblasts, that he be sent back toPortugal.

Salem, a gangster extraditedfrom Portugal in November 2005,was charged with MCOCA for

allegedly making extortion callsto Delhi-based businessmanAshok Gupta in 2002, demandingRs five crore as protection mon-ey.

The Portuguese court had saidthat in view of the new chargesagainst Salem which entail deathpenalty, the authorisation grant-ed for his extradition has beenterminated as it violated the prin-ciple of speciality.

India had given an ‘executiveassurance’ to Portugal that Salemwould not be given death penaltyor charged with any section oflaw which entails jail for morethan 25 years, once he is extra-dited.

Coaching classesa problem,

feel IIT facultyNew Delhi: The faculty at theIIT agree with Infosys founderN R Narayan Murthy on his ob-servation that the standard ofthe students at the premier in-stitution has deteriorated becauseof coaching classes.

Backing Murthy on the issue,Sanjeev Sanghi, president of thefaculty forum at IIT Delhi, said,“I don’t think Murthy is harsh. We do have a problem with thecoaching system.”

Murthy had said that almost80 per cent of the IITians lackquality.

Murthy blamed the coachingclasses for the lack of quality inthe premier engineering instituteof the country.

“Thanks to coaching classes, the quality of students enteringIITs has gone lower and lower.Save the top 20 per cent whocrack the tough IIT entranceexam and can stand among thebest anywhere in the world, thequality of the remaining 80 percent of students leaves much tobe desired,” said Murthy.

Murthy further stressed on theneed of a new system for the se-lection of students to the IITs.

“They somehow get throughthe JEE. But their performancein IITs, at jobs or when theycome for higher education in in-stitutes in the US is not as goodas it used to be. This has to becorrected. A new method of se-

lection of students to IITs has tobe arrived at,” he said.

This comes even as there’sanger within the IIT over whatUnion Minister Jairam Rameshhad said in July. He had claimedthat IIT’s teaching faculty wasbelow par.

IITs are good because of thestudents and not because of thefaculty or the research. There ishardly any worthwhile research. The faculty in the IITs is notworldclass, it is the students whoare worldclass. So the IITs andthe IIMs are excellent becauseof the quality of the studentsnot because of the quality of re-search or faculty.

Infosys founder N RNarayana Murthy said

yesterday that the quality of engineers coming out of

IITs is poor nowadays.
