JD(S) leader at BBMP, Padmanabha Reddy, gives details as to why the city has not got rid ofdog menace today. He said that BBMP officials have colluded with illegal mutton shopsand allowed them to dump mutton waste, allowing dog population to grow. While there

are over 10,000 mutton shops across the city, BBMP officials have accounted for only 2109.This clearly indicates the collusion between these owners and BBMP officials, he said.

Talent hunt carnival launchedBangalore: Coffee Day Hotels &Resorts has launched NammaUru (Our Home Town), a carnivalthat promises to showcaseunique talent from rural Kar-nataka under one umbrella tomake art accessible to everyone. The Serai, in association with AHundred Hands and The KumbleFoundation, are going into vil-lages of the state to present ‘Nam-ma Uru’.

Like the Hase Chitra, Karnata-ka offers an array of arts andculture which are waiting to bediscovered. A barber who com-poses sweet music with his saxa-phone, a lady who moulds mun-dane clay into charming piecesof costume jewellery, and agroup of women who stringcolourful bits of paper to makejewellery. Veerabhadra Kunita– a religious dance form thatnarrates tales of valour, clay ves-sels and idol typical of the Khum-bara tribe, block-printed clothesand accesories, curioware andbeewax balms all occupy a spacein the rich tapestry of art andculture in the state.

‘Namma Uru’ is a platform forart and culture to be recognized, for it to sustain, and flourishwhile generating funds to sup-port the artists. The carnival willbe held from October through

December. Vejay Anand, president, mar-

keting and sales, Coffee Day Ho-tels and Resorts, says, “The con-cept of ‘Namma Uru’ arises fromthe need to discover and promotethe undiscovered talent of thestate. We will ensure that thecarnival will expand and bringmore arts and artisans under itsambit in the future.”

THE GLOWING LAMPAYogi is one who is proficient

in that depth of conscious-ness which is the basis ofall existence. Once you gainthe secret of life then noth-

ing else appears to tempt you. Youfeel you have attained the highest andyou don’t worry about more gains. Our feverishness is about gainingsomething more – either material orspiritual. That wanting to get somethingmore keeps you on run. But when youare established in this consciousness,in meditation and yoga then you findthat no misery or problems touch you.It can’t shake you because you arewell established with a strong senseof stability and rooted-ness in life. Itis alright to be angry but the angershould not stay in you longer thanyou draw a line on the surface of water. If your anger is only that much, thenit is healthy. But if it lingers on in yourhead, more than 10 minutes, morethan a day, years or months then, there is serious work to be done. Ayogi does not get blown away by gains

and losses or by any such untowardthings that might happen because heknows these are fleeting moments,Maya, an illusion.

Like an expert in any field is notperturbed by events that happenaround him or her. An expert driveror mechanic does not worry if the carbreaks down because he knows howto fix it. A yogi walks with ease, em-bracing any field in life because, lifeitself, has become proficient and effi-cient in the skill. This is because youare attending to the root of life whichis spirituality. If you are well-versedin this, you feel at home in any fieldyou come across because then yourintuition works. You can fix thingsthat you really don’t know, due to thespiritual connection you have. For ex-ample, someone who is learning driv-ing with an L board in the car, willnotice every stone and is very consciousabout every vehicle. Similarly, if youare not a cook then the first time youenter a kitchen, you will look at thecook book, be anxious about what

you will make, how you should make. But imagine a field in which you areproficient, how do you walk in thatfield? Easily and with confidence. Ayogi can consciously live that state.He/she is centered all the time. Inspite of being with everybody in theworld, there is steadiness in the mind, and it is not an effort.

When you get centered there is apleasure that dawns deep within youthat can be captured by your intellect, not through the senses. Sometimes,in a relationship before a physical re-lationship breaks down, the intellectualor emotional relationship breaks down.Intellectual compatibility comes, staysfor sometime and starts disappearing. When you make a new friend thenthere is lot of jokes, lot of fun, lot ofenthusiasm, because the intellect isfully engaging itself. After a while, you seem to know the person, thenyou stop having fun; then you feel, that somewhere you are retrieving. Then you find “oh life is boredom”.That type of intellectual pleasure which

you are seeking is going to come whenyou are reposing and steady in thebeing. You are the source of joy. Butyou are looking at others and tryingto get joy out of them. When you knowthat you are the source of joy, youdon’t expect someone to give you joy;you will start giving joy.

Yoga comes by reposing in the selfand relaxing. And that gives you somuch joy, extreme sense of happiness. The mind of such a person is like alamp. In a place where there is nowind, the flame is steady and spreadslight equally in all directions. Youmight have had this experience, atsome point of your life when yourmind is absolutely like a laser beam,so focused, so solid, your intentionsget manifested. Base your life on wis-dom, on yoga. Something that is non-changing. There is a path in you thatdoes not change or die. Hook on tothat which does not change withinyou and become stable.

Vikram Hospital offers cure for epilepsy thru surgery

Bangalore: The neurosciences team atVikram Hospital has claimed a cure forepilepsy through brain surgery.

Epilepsy, commonly known as fits, affectsone in every hundred individuals. Amongthese, one in five does not respond to anymedical treatment. Consequently, they canend up having fits daily, sometimes 20–30times in a day, resulting in mental retardationas well as getting confined to home most ofthe time. They also can suffer from grievousinjuries due to falls.

At Vikram Hospital, a team of neurologistsand neurosurgeons demonstrated the sur-gical cure they have offered to 28 such pa-tients since the inception of this hospitallate last year. Seven of these patients whohave been cured were present at the pressconference and shared their experiences.

Dr Ravi Mohan Rao, a leading neurosur-geon in the field of epilepsy surgery, show-cased epilepsy surgeries possible, whichwill ensure cure in over 75% of refractory

epilepsy cases. Dr Raghavendra, senior neu-rologist, explained how patients are con-tinuously monitored for several days with

both video and EEG (Electrical activity ofthe brain, akin to ECG of the heart) to recordall the varieties of fits a person may have.Analysing the Video EEG, it’s possible to lo-cate the origin of the abnormal electricalbursts causing the fits. All cases need toundergo MRI of brain to find out the natureof the damage in the brain and few have toget the functional MRI as well to locate thespeech and motor function of the brain tomake sure they are all preserved duringsurgery. Some of the cases are complex andneed to have invasive brain electrodes placedto record EEG in the deep and sensitiveparts for accurate diagnosis and planning.

Dr B A Chandramouli, head of neuro-surgery department, showed the use of var-ious equipment and how they are used inepilepsy and other brain surgeries. With afive-bed video EEG, Vikram Hospital boastsof the largest epilepsy treatment centre inthis part of the country, said Dr Vikram, MDof the hospital.

I was surprised at being dropped: BhajjiNew Delhi: Off-spinner Harbbhajan Singhsays he was more surprised than hurtwhen he was axed from the Indian ODIteam for the first two ODIs against Eng-land.

"I wouldn't say I was hurt. I was moresurprised. I wish the younger guys allthe best. I am more than happy to sharemy experience with them like I was helpedby Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble andSourav Ganguly while I was coming up,"Harbbhajan said in an interview today.

Dropped following a lacklustre tour ofEngland, Harbhajan said that despite notbeing a part of Indian side, he wouldlike to see his teammates take revengeover England in the five-match series, starting on Friday in Hyderabad.

England recently blanked India 0-4 inthe Test series before inflicting a humili-ating 0-3 defeat in the five-match one-day series at their backyard.

Harbhajan, on his part had a dismalshow, as he took only two wickets in69.4 overs at an average of 143.50 andeconomy rate of 4.11 before he suffered astomach injury during the second gameand was ruled out for the rest of the tour.

"Harbhajan Singh is immaterial. What

is important is India must beat Englandin the five-match ODI series and taketheir revenge, which I am sure they wouldover the next two weeks," he said.

"Ultimately, we are all playing for the

country. We all are looking to exactrevenge against a team who were so goodagainst us recently," he added.

The feisty spinner also said that India'sdefeat in England hurt him more thanhis own omission and it continues to bea recurring nightmare for him.

"It took a lot of hard work for us toreach to the top. And we wouldn't resttill we wrest it back. We won't rest..," hesaid.

Critics in recent times have found faultwith Harbhajan's bowling, saying it wasnot penetrative enough but the bowlerbegged to differ.

"First of all you must decide what youexpect from a bowler in limited oversformat. Do you expect him to take a five-for everytime he bowls his 10 overs or doyou want him to put the squeeze on andforce the opposition to play into yourhands?," asked Harbhajan.

"In a low-scoring match, you wouldexpect him to take wickets. On a belterof a track, you want him to dry up theruns," he added.

In the 17 ODIs this year, the 31-year-old spinner barely conceded over fourruns an over during the tours of South

Africa and West Indies and in the WorldCup.

"In the Caribbean, I took one for 24from 10 overs, besides scoring 41 withthe bat in Antigua to clinch the one-dayseries. I must have done something rightto have survived for 13 years. Who canbe more concerned about my performancethan myself?" he said.

"I would do what my team wants meto do. I can't keep adjusting every timesomebody fancies to write about me. AllI can say is that I am now completely fitand full of vigour. I am ready to put mybest foot forward."

India turned out to be an inferior sideagainst a rampant England in an awaysummer but a series of injuries also playeda part, including one to Harbhajan inthe second Test at Trent Bridge, whichskipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni oftenmentions as the moment when his teamcompletely lost its bearing.

Injuries were also an issue with theIPL side -- Mumbai Indians -- but unlikethe Indian team, it rode over its misfortuneand won its maiden Champions LeagueTwenty20 title last Sunday.

Donʼt back down on Lokpal: Team AnnaNew Delhi: Team Anna today welcomedthe government's announcement that theLokpal will be made into a constitutionalbody but cautioned that it won't tolerateany dilution of its stand on the anti-cor-ruption bill's provisions.

"We will be happy if the Lokpal can bemade into a constitutional body with allthe provisions. But making it into a con-stitutional authority shall not preventbeing made into a statutory body," TeamAnna member Prashant Bhushan said.

"Since Congress and UPA are there tomake the Act, they should ensure thatthe Act is being made. In the process ofmaking a constitutional body, it shouldnot happen that the whole things fallsthrough," he warned.

Another Team Anna member KiranBedi said that Government's move tomake the Lokpal a constitutional authorityis a tactic to delay or avoid its passageand 'fool' the people.

"If government is serious on Lokpal, itshould first pass the Bill by winter session.Constitutional status is a sure means todelay or avoid the passage of the Bill,"Bedi said.

Bhushan and Bedi were respondingto Law Minister Salman Khurshid's state-ment that the government intends tomake the Lokpal a constitutional authority

which will be 'more powerful' than theElection Commission.

"I said something else. I said whatRahul Gandhi has said is something weare inspired by. We want to pursue withthat. Beyond that, I am not going intothe details," Khurshid said.

Bedi said the plans to make Lokpal aconstitutional authority was like "puttingthe cart before the horse. It's like, nobread (but) keep waiting for the illusionary

cake. Who are they fooling?"The move for a Constitutional body is

a follow-up to the proposal made by AICCGeneral Secretary Rahul Gandhi at lastmonth's Lok Sabha debate on Lokpal.

The Opposition also asked the gov-ernment to make its intention clear afterKhurshid's statement on the Lokpal Bill.

"This is an attempt being made by thelaw minister to tow the Rahul Gandhiline on Lokpal formation. BJP demands

instead of these political moves, the gov-ernment should declare its intent clearlyfor bring about a strong Lokpal bill," BJPChief Spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasadsaid.

Khurshid had on Tuesday said that aConstitutional Amendment Bill will beintroduced for to make the Lokpal a con-stitutional authority in the winter sessionof Parliament.

"We are working on a very strongLokpal Bill. A Lokpal Bill that will comewith a Constitutional amendment. Thatamendment will give the Lokpal the statusof a Constitutional authority," he said.

The non-judicial members in the anti-corruption body will be from civil society, including those who have worked on cor-ruption issues and good governance suchas those who have held high positions ininvestigative agencies.

Khurshid confirmed that the proposalwas with the Parliamentary StandingCommittee on Law and Justice, Grievancesand Department of Personnel.

The Law Minister said the proposalhad not yet been formally considered bythe Union Cabinet but the sense in thegovernment and the party was for aLokpal that will have Constitutional sta-tus.

While Sharma, Shree Bhag-wan, Satya Prakash have beenacquitted, the court upheld thelife sentence for Pradeep Sharma, who actually killed Shivani.

The two-judge division benchof justices BD Ahmed and Man-mohan Singh, which had re-served the verdict on December

21 2010, took into account Shar-ma's service record and found itto be exemplary.

Sharma, who has been servinghis jail term Delhi's Tihar Jail forthe last nine years, and threeothers had challenged their con-viction and sentencing in themurder case by the trial court.

Sharma's counsel had arguedthere were several missing links, including the call records, in thechain of circumstances and therecord was tampered with to im-plicate him.

The lawyer had sought acquit-

tal of his client on the ground oflacunae in the transcript of themobile phone calls between hisclient and other accomplices tosubstantiate his allegation thatthe police had fabricated the callrecords.

Lawyer of Satya Prakash Sar-faraz said, "The motive of themurder was Shivani's relation-ship with RK Sharma but thecourt said the evidence has notbeen established."

Standing Counsel (Criminal)Pawan Sharma had counteredthe defence submission contend-

ing the accused was posted inthe PNO and if any call recordwas tampered with at all, it wasdone by Sharma.

Shivani, an Indian Expressjournalist, was murdered on Jan-uary 23, 1999, in her Nav KunjApartment at IP Extension inEast Delhi. The court had slappeda fine of Rs 20,000 on RK Sharma, while the other three were finedRs 10,000 each in 2008.
