9 killed, 17 injured in Pak suicide attack Islamabad: A suicide bomber rammed his ex- plosives-laden vehicle into a camp of paramil- itary troopers in northwest Pakistan on Satur- day, killing at least nine security personnel and injuring 17 others. The attacker targeted an office inside the Fron- tier Corps camp in Bannu city of Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa province. Parts of the single- storey building collapsed after the explosion, po- lice said. Nine bodies had been found so far, officials told the media. They said they feared more bodies could be buried in the rubble. The 17 security personnel injured in the at- tack were taken to a military hospital in Bannu, where officials said several troopers were in crit- ical condition. Sources said nearly 300 paramilitary troop- ers were living in the camp, which had sever- al residential barracks. The camp is a base for Frontier Corps per- sonnel deployed in nearby North Waziristan trib- al region, considered a safe haven for Taliban and al-Qaeda elements. Bannu is located 40 km from Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal agency. Footage on television showed most parts of the camp were razed to the ground. Security personnel dug through the rubble of the office with their hands as they searched for bodies and the injured. No group claimed responsibility for the attack though officials blamed the local Taliban for the bombing. Local residents said they heard a pow- erful explosion at about 6 am local time. This was followed by heavy firing, they said. Security personnel blocked all roads leading to the camp on the outskirts of Bannu city. Sources said the vehicle used in the attack had entered Bannu district from North Waziris- tan. This was the second attack on security forces in Pakistan’s restive northwest in two days. Pro-Taliban militants attacked a check post near South Waziristan early Friday and killed a paramilitary trooper and injured several oth- ers. The militants also kidnapped several troop- ers and Taliban spokesman EhsanullahEhsan had claimed responsibility for that attack. He later threatened that the kidnapped se- curity personnel could be killed. There has been no report about the fate of the abducted personnel. Bangalore: The BBMP is holding elec-tions to 11 standing committees on De-cember 26 after the positions fell vacantwith the resignation of Congress mem-bers.

Of the 12 standing committees, Con-gress members have resigned from 11,except the taxation and finances com-mittee. The number of standing com-mittees had been increased from eightto 12 and elections for 11 committeeswere held on August 30 of last year.

All the committees had to resignwhen the term of last mayor ended.Later, elections were held for all the 12standing committees. While the BJPnominated new members, the Congress

continued with the earlier members asit felt that it would not do justice to itsmembers if their term ended within sixmonths. The party allowed them tocontinue for one year and has nowasked them to resign to give chance toother party corporators.

With this, 33 positions have fallenvacant and the elections will be heldon December 26. The elections will beheld at the Kempegowda auditoriumand will be presided over by mayorShardamma.

Most of the Congress members arein a fix now. For, the term of the presentmayor is ending in another four months, when all the 12 standing committees

too will have to stop functioning. Thesestanding committees will effectivelyfunction only for another three monthsas they cannot hold meetings or go oninspections a month prior to the end ofthe term.

After that, another one month willgo in elections for the new mayor andstanding committees.

The Congress corporators are nowasking the party to continue with theearlier members, as the new membersmay not have long enough a term toenjoy their power and status.

It is learnt that most of the Congressmembers are not keen to contest thepresent election.

NICE to increase toll by 7‑10% from New Year

Bangalore: Here is a shock for all those who useNICE road regularly. The Nandi InfrastructureCorridor Enterprise has decided to increase thetoll by 7 to 10 percent from the beginning of nextyear.

As per the agreement NICE has entered withthe state government, the infrastructure companywill increase the toll from January 1. The companyhas sent a proposal to the government and waitingfor approval.

The increase in toll will depend on the distancetravelled by commuters at different parts of the

city and the different entry points used by thesecommuters. All those vehicles which connectNICE link roads from main roads will have tobear the burden.

NICE public relations officer Mahadeva saidthat the company has been collecting toll lesserthan the stipulated amount all these days. “Thetoll will now be increased by 7-10 percent fromthe new year,” he said.

AIDSO: PU merger withhigh school not good

Bangalore: The state government decision tomerge pre-university courses with high schoolwould affect higher education. The proposalshould be dropped immediately, demanded mem-bers of the statue unit of the All-India DemocraticStudents Organisation.

All teachers and lecturers have considered pre-university to be part of university studies. Tilldegree and professional courses, the studentswould study under a common stream. They alsohad an opportunity to listen to lectures fromsenior degree and post-graduate teachers. Butthe government does not seem to have taken intoconsideration the ill-effects of the latest move,”AIDSO president V N Rajashekar has stated in apress release.

The central government had the idea thatgeneral education should end before the degreeand professional courses. There are very few stu-dents who can take up regular degree or profes-sional courses. With this move, the central gov-ernment has been trying to push maximumnumber of students towards vocational courses. But the flip side of this policy is that many studentswould neither have full education, nor will theyget right jobs, he warned.

Education minister VishweshwaraHegdeKagerihas stated that the state government is taking thedecision as per the orders of the central govern-

ment. But when many institutions do not haveproper drinking water, library, toilets, laboratoryand other facilities, the decision is not right, hesaid.

The government has not thought about thefate of PU teachers once it comes into effect. Thedecision will seriously affect higher education,he warned.
