Dynamic is an independent recording company with its of-fices in Villa Quartana on the quiet Righi hill standing above Genoa. Its production embraces the entire field of classical music, but focuses chiefly on the immense heritage of Italian and European music of the eighteenth- and nineteenth centuries especially opera and violin works. Dynamic favours composi-tions in world-première recordings or works that stand out-side the bounds of traditional repertoire.Known all over the world as the first recording company to have reappraised Nicolò Paganini, in the last few years Dyna-mic has extended its range of interest to opera through highly fruitful partnerships with Italian festivals and opera houses, and has produced recordings of lesser-known titles by Ver-di, Donizetti, Pacini, Massenet, Meyerbeer and Tchaikovsky.

Outstanding productions in this field include the recordings of operas staged at the famous La Fenice theatre in Venice, at the Valle d’Itria Festival in Martina Franca and at the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari. Its catalogue boasts over 350 titles, with about 30 new titles being added every years. Many artists of international standing have recorded on the Dynamic label: Massimo Quarta, Salvatore Accardo, Felix Ayo, Stefan Milenkovich, Ruggiero Ricci, Bruno Canino, Rocco Filippini, Ovidiu Badila, Mirella Freni, Ferruc-cio Furlanetto, Placido Domingo, Renato Bruson William Matteuzzi, Iano Tamar, Patrizia Ciofi, Annick Massis, Veronique Gens, Dimitra Theodossiou, Joseph Calleja, George Prêtre, Renato Palumbo, José Cura, Leo Nucci, Marcello Viotti, Franco Mezzena.

Sono Luminus, was created in 1995 when Sandy Lerner and Len Bosack, founders of Cisco Systems, a top supplier of networking tools for the Internet decided that their expertise in digital signal processing, computational mathematics and physics would enable them to bring a new level of recording fidelity to music. Drawing upon their expertise in digital technologies as well as their love of music, they applied their experiences to realize a life-long dream: to develop and create a new paradigm for recorded sound, dedicated to the realization of true Performance Fidelity. To achieve this, Sono Luminus adopted a

simple philosophy of “less is more.” Allowing for natural ambient acoustics, recorded dry, to determine optimal microphone placement, Sono Luminus became a first choice for acoustic, classical and early music artists and ensembles. In 2005, after over a decade of producing critically acclaimed recordings for several major and independent labels, Sono Luminus decided to enter the market under its own masthead. The acquisition of the Dorian cata-logue provided Sono Luminus with an extraordinary opportunity to build upon past accomplishments and esta-blish new standards of excellence. The new company, operating as Sono Luminus benefits not only from the proven entrepreneurial expertise of Sono Luminus founders Sandy Lerner and Len Bosack but has assembled a distinguished team of the brightest innovative newcomers to the Engineering and Creative sides of the company as well as the top industry veterans, who demonstrate their commitment to excellence in every project. Some of the original Dorian catalogue will once again be made available as part of the competitively priced Best of Dorian series. This new series will feature newly re-mastered re-releases of the best-selling artists, ensembles and multi-volume series.Since the launch of the Sono Luminus imprint in 2005, the new label has continued it’s reputation for excel-lence, receiving the Audio Engineering Society’s Award of Excellence in High Resolution Audio (2007), and TWO GRAMMY ® Nominations; The Smithsonian Chamber Players nominated for Best Small Ensemble in the 50th GRAMMY ® Awards, and Ronn McFarlane for Best Classical Crossover album in the 51st GRAMMY ® Awards. And most recently, winner of the 53rd GRAMMY® Award for Best Engineered Classical Album for «Quincy Porter: The Complete Viola Works.»

HANDEL, GEORGE FRIEDRICH - My favourite Instrument

«I wrote like the devil in those days, especially for the hautbois, which was my favourite instrument», Georg Friedrich Handel reminisced on his youthful years. Throughout his life, the oboe was to play an outstanding role for him; for no other instrument did he compose such passionate, dramatic and virtuosic soli. The Batzdorfer Hofkapelle presents here a selection of the most beautiful works of Handel with the oboe – beginning with the early Hamburg period and his sojourn in Rome and concluding with his London period. The recording includes excerpts from the operas Almira, HWV 1 and Teseo, HWV 9, from the latter the vengeance aria Morirò, ma vendicata with its maniacal colora-turas in both the singing voice and the oboe. In the instrumental works recorded here, the spectrum extends from oboe sonatas and trio sonatas to concertos. The oboist Xenia Löffler, member of the Berlin Academy of Early Music, is an internationally sought-after soloist. She proves herself on this recording to be a top-notch Handel specialist who knows how to perform both the lyrical and the dramatic moments of this music with elegance and verve. The vocal parts in the arias with oboe are sung by the young coloratura soprano Marie Friederike Schöder, a shooting star of the baroque scene whose voice convinces listeners with its extraordinary fluency and lightness in the high range.

Anyone familiar only with the beginning and end of Jean-Marie Leclair - born 1697 in Lyon as the son of a basket maker and murdered in October 1764 in his flat in a gloomy Parisian suburb - would never have thought that he was one of the greatest violinists of the 18th century. Leclair, who was appointed ordinaire de la musique du roi in the court orchestra of Louis XV after having begun his career as a dancer and ballet master, was considered the «Corelli of France» by his contemporaries - and not without reason. The two volumes of duos for two violins without basso continuo stand out in his oeuvre, not least because of their unusual instrumentation. In them, Leclair introduces a new art of violin-playing «à deux», combining the impetuosity of Italian virtuosity with the elegance of French dance culture. The sonatas, in which the role of melody and accompaniment constantly alternates between the two violins, require supreme technical sovereignty on the part of the instrumentalists. Successions of double-stops and chords occasionally pile up to become veritable mountains; at times, entire series of notes in staccato are to be played within a single stroke of the bow.Two proven baroque specialists, Florian Deuter and Mónica Waisman, have accepted the challenges posed by this highly virtuosic and variegated music. In their view, Opus 12 makes the first collection Opus 3 appear almost simple – but in their playing, one never notices the breakneck technical requi-rements at any time.

Recorded in the beautiful acoustics of the parish church of Hallstatt (Austria), where Gunar Letzbor was born, this personal and dramatic interpretation of Biber’s most popular work, usually referred to today as the ‘Mistery’ or ‘Rosary’ sonatas, comes back after years of absence. Gunar Letzbor makes his journey through the ‘mysteries’ or events in the life of the Virgin Mary using two different violins and accompanied by no fewer than six musicians playing kaleidoscopic combinations of harpsichord, organ, lute, archlute, two bass viols and double bass – a big continuo group which enhances and intensifies the changing moods of the cycle. Gunar Letzbor’s lively, imaginative playing admirably fuses style and drama. He also utilizestwo different period violins, each with its own distinctive timbre and colorations. Similarly, the continuo chores are divided between lute, organ, and harpsichord, providing ample textural and expressive variety. The warm recorded sound transports you from your liste-ning room to an intimate stage, where you can comfortably nestle among these marvelous instrumentalist. (re-release of A401)

Drummer, composer, bandleader and tireless improviser Bobby Previte is known for his voluminous contributions to New York’s legendary downtown experimental music scene – an immensely fertile period in the 1980s that saw the likes of Steve Reich and Philip Glass breaking new ground with John Zorn, Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time and many more. Now with nearly four decades under his belt as a creative force behind the drumkit, Previte has assembled a dream team of experimental musicians from the jazz, indie rock, and classical worlds to create Terminals, a luminous project consisting of five concertos for percussion ensemble and so-loists, each inspired by the schematic-like terminal maps that Previte has noticed in airports around the world. The eternally adventurous So Percussion performs throughout, as Nels Cline (Wilco), Zee-na Parkins, Greg Osby and John Medeski (MMW) take turns in the forefront to deliver an electrifying part-composed, part-improvised opus that stretches over two vinyl pieces. In the liner notes to the LP, which will be pressed in a deluxe double-gatefold package, Previte breaks down the influences that inspired the project. “Terminals is a collision between, and a celebration of, two worlds. In clichéd terms: the precise, unflappable, ‘classical’ percussion ensemble meets the wild, uncontrollable, ‘jazz’ master improviser in the forum best suited to such a meeting, the Concer-to – a schizophrenic word whose etymology is much debated but in Italian means to ‘join together’.

Karlsruhe is one of the youngest of Germany’s major cities – the city celebrates its 300th anniversary in 2015. The festivities celebrating this jubilee are an occasion for the Karlsruhe Baroque orchestra to introduce this debut CD with selected works by directors of the court ensembles in Karlsruhe. In the 18th century, the musical life of Karlsruhe was nearly identical with that of the small court, where an ensemble of very high quality was developed with the help of less well-known composers including Johann Philipp Käfer, Johann Melchior Molter, Sebastian Bodinus and Friedrich Schwindl. Then, in the early 19th century, Baden became elevated to the level of a Grand Duchy due to Na-poleon and gained a considerable amount of territory – the significance of the Baden court and its music increased correspondingly. Better-known musicians such as Franz Danzi and the violin virtuoso Friedrich Ernst Fesca also came to Karlsruhe during this period. This CD is a wonderful compendium of over 200 years of Karlsruhe’s musical history, extending from the origins of the Karlsruhe court in the Baroque period to its heyday in the 19th century. The ‘Karls-ruher Barockorchester’ (Karlsruhe Baroque orchestra) under the direction of Kirstin Kares has exca-vated some magnificent works: with «tympani and trumpets» and great musical verve, they present works of high musical value and outstanding representative quality, almost all of them premiere recordings. The musical tradition of Karlsruhe is thus resurrected in a completely new splendour.

This recording of four recorder sonatas by George Frideric Handel and an 18th century transcription of his popular Royal Fireworks Suite, is the work of three Melbourne musicians who have made an important contribution to the growth and popularity of early music per-formance in Australia for over thirty years. The recorder sonatas are well known and receive a loving performance from musicians steeped in the works of this period. The key feature is the adaptation of the Fireworks Music (originally for flute, violin or harp-sichord) published By JohnWalsh around 1750. This is the only recording of the work in this arrangement. All the instruments are faithful reproductions of authentic originals, historically accurate and carefully researched and tuned to a version of period temperament, giving each key its own character. This is an album of gentle and refined style.

German pianist Burkard Schliessmann is a performer with a passion and vision – to seek out and interpret the forms, colors and textures, indeed the soul and expression: the poetic impact, of works we believe have already been fully explored. His recordings of Chopin, Liszt and Schumann for Bayer and Arthaus have received worldwide acclaim. “ Schliessmann is too good a pianist for anyone to pass on this” – American Record Guide. Likewise his Bach is individual, Romantic and expressive, following in the traditions of Schnabel and Cortot. In his first recording for Divine Art, Schliessmann presents two well known works in a new and revealing light, together with three ‘Fantasy and Fugue’ works; a special feature is his version of the BWV 906, including both Busoni’s completion of Bach’s unfinished fugue and his insertion of the BWV 968 Adagio, arranged either by WF Bach or the publisher Altnickol. This is a high-luxury digipak presentation of a 5-channel hybrid SACD/CD.Also available:DDA25030 - 4 Klavierkonzerte

Bonuccelli studied with Luciano Lanfranchi, graduating in piano with full marks and honour in 2004 from the Conservatory of Genoa. He went on to specialize under the guidance of Franco Scala, An-drea Lucchesini and Pietro De Maria, and in 2011 he earned a master degree in performance at the Paganini Conservatory with Marco Vincenzi, once again summa cum laude. He also holds a degree in composition, and many of his works have been performed in public concerts. He has won forty-two awards, twenty-five of which first prizes, in national and international com-petitions, as well as scholarships and special mentions. He has given over three-hundred concerts, as soloist, with orchestra and in various chamber ensembles, in fourteen European countries and in Japan, appearing in prestigious halls, such as the Teatro Bibiena of Mantua, London’s Wigmore Hall, Stockholm’s Royal Palace, the Teatro Caio Melisso (for the Spoleto Festival), the Teatro Comunale of Florence (for the Maggio Musicale), the Kashihara Theatre of Osaka, and Milan’s Sala Verdi. Bonuccelli’s repertoire spans from Baroque to Contemporary music, with a predilection for Early Ro-manticism. He has prepared and performed monographic programmes on the occasion of the anni-versaries of composers, among them those of Mozart, Enescu, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Mahler andDebussy. In 2013 he recorded Richard Wagner’s complete piano works, in 2 CDs, for the Dynamic label.

HOVHANESS, ALAN - Piano Works

This CD offers a small selection of works by the American composer of Armenian origin Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000). It is a consciously eclectic choice in terms of chronology and inspiration: a glimpse of the production of a prolific composer who is under-performed in Europe. It is not easy to define Hovhaness’ position within contemporary music, given his decision to stay away from the European avant-garde and study the Eastern music traditions alongside with classical polyphony. The influences that Hovhaness felt were important in his musical pathway are too numerous to enumerate: they go from Händel, Bach, Sibelius to extra-musical aspects such as the philosophical lesson of Francis Bacon, his friendship with Hermon di Giovanno, his religious attitude, his passion for astronomy and his love for nature – the latter three are especially evident in compositions for ensembles or orchestra. As a result, Hovhaness’ style is entirely individual to the point, as said above, to make of him a unique case in the history of contemporary music.

Born in Milan on the feast of the Epiphany of 1695, Giuseppe Sammartini, older brother to the more renowned Giovanni Battista, was mainly known for his skill as an oboist, which made him one of the most famous performers of the 18th century, “the greatest the world had ever known”, according to Hawkins. In addition to being a celebrated soloist, Giuseppe Sammartini was also a noteworthy composer, producing a fair number of instrumental works. In the course of his career, Sammartini published three collections of trio sonatas, which are among his finest compositions. They are thirty works in all, and despite their small number, these compositions are probably the works that best define the artistic path of their author. The Sonatas Op. 3 are, to all intents and purposes, concerti grossi on a smaller scale. Indeed as Hawkins – one of the few who truly understood the composer’s talent – remarked, with the Sonatas Op. 3 Sammartini left the highest and most complex testimony of his musical qualities, as well as of his difficult conquest of a style that both satisfied contemporary conventions and was an incomparable expression of personal taste.

Third Pablo Queipo de Llano (1971) recording installment for Enchiriadis label. This time under the title Il Proteo in reference to one of the works in the CD it is presented an antho-logy which gathers oboe concertos, symphonies and fugues for string and bass performed by the highly reputed historicist ensemble Silete Venti! conducted by Milanese oboist Si-mone Toni. Recently distinguished as a well-known figure in the Neo Baroque movement, Pablo Queipo de Llano goes deeply in this new recording into the recreation of the style of the later Baroque, a music that in Joseph Dillon Ford’s words: «not only delights the ear of the enthusiastic concertgoer but stimulates and engages the intellectual curiosity of the unbiased connaisseur».

A new Antonio Florio-directed recording from Glossa, once more focusing on a famous Ita-lian singer from the Baroque era, again features the gorgeous vocal qualities of a modern-day Italian interpreter of such music, Roberta Invernizzi. This new and glorious succession of virtuoso arias had captivated audiences in the newly-reopened Roman theatres through the vocal chords of one eminent singer from 1718 onwards... Arias for Domenico Gizzi traces the spectacular career of an artist whose importance lay not just in his voice, but his skill in being engaged to sing in operas which served the political needs of the powerful early 18th-century patrons: from Queen Christina of Sweden and James Stuart, “The Old Pretender” to Roman cardinals. Roberta Invernizzi’s choice of arias from across Gizzi’s years of glory, typically representing heroic male characters, draws on operas by Alessandro Scarlatti, Leo-nardo Vinci, Domenico Sarro, Francesco Feo, Giovanni Battista Costanzi, Giovanni Bononcini and Nicola Porpora. As ever, Antonio Florio leads a zestful I Turchini for this new recording, whilst Giulia Veneziano, in her booklet essay, opens up what, for many, will be a previously uncharted voyage into the history of singing in its own right.

Glossa continues its major contribution to the recording of the music of Jean-Philippe Ra-meau with a further ballet héroïque, Les Fêtes de Polymnie, directed by György Vashegyi and featuring accomplished ramistes such as Aurélia Legay, Emöke Barath or Mathias Vidal, and led by the incomparable Véronique Gens in the various vocal roles that appear in the Prologue and the three Entrées of this work. Composed in 1745, an annus mirabilis for France, Rameau, aided by his reformist librettist Louis de Cahusac’s preferences for cho-ruses and ballets, conjured up – in addition to sparkling arias and recitatives – a dazzling mosaic of intermèdes, passacailles, chaconnes and descriptive symphonies interspersed with vivid choral contributions, which the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra deliver with taste and spirit on this new recording of the festivities. As with the recent Les Fêtes de l’Hymen et de l’Amour (conducted by Hervé Niquet), this modern-day revindication of Les Fêtes de Polymnie is matched by an essay about the score (placed within its historical context) from Benoît Dratwicki of the supporting institution for this recording, the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles.

Highly respected in his day as a scholar, composer and pianist, Walter Niemann fell out of favour after the Second World War. His prolific output for piano, which includes several full-scale sonatas, is mainly romantic and reflective in style, yet with an underlying passion. The Sonata No. 1 is notable for its contrast between impassioned writing and wistful expres-siveness, while the heartfelt Sonata No. 2 ‘Nordic’, which features an exquisite and plangent slow movement, is testament to Niemann’s Scandinavian sympathies.

Bing Bing Li was, at the age of eight, given the accolade of ‘Star of the Future’ by the Govern-ment of Jilin Province in China. Her inherent musical sense and dazzling technique provided early opportunities to perform on concert platforms throughout China. Now resident in Britain, she enjoys a successful international career as a soloist and reci-talist. In addition to her wide ranging repertoire, she has a real passion for ‘rediscovering’ music of composers celebrated in their lifetime, but currently neglected.

KHACHATURIAN, ARAM IL’YICH - Original Piano Works and Transcriptions

Although Khachaturian is today renowned for his great ballet scores, his piano works have been relatively neglected. Performed by the award-winning Armenian pianist Kariné Pogho-syan, this programme features arrangements of excerpts from two of Khachaturian’s most popular works, Spartacus and Masquerade, alongside the technically demanding Toccata and Poem from the earlier part of his career and the impressive 1961 Piano Sonata, one of the most formally classical of the composer’s larger works.

The Armenian pianist Kariné Poghosyan made her orchestral début at fourteen playing Bee-thoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1, and her solo Carnegie Hall début at 23, and has since gone on to win numerous awards as well as performing in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls. Her music studies began in her native Yerevan in Armenia. After moving to the United States in 1998, and receiving her BM, summa cum laude, from California State University in Northridge, she received her MM and D.M.A. degrees under Arkady Aronov at the Manhattan School of Music, where she now teaches.

One of the leading composers of the Classical and early Romantic eras, Vaňhal played a vital role in the development of Viennese music between 1750 and 1780. He composed prolifically in many genres, including a large number of quartets, symphonies, sacred works, vocal and instrumental works. Vaňhal was at his most inspirational and improvisational in his keyboard Capriccios composed in the 1780s, which are some of the most creative examples of the Viennese Classical style, not least in their almost symphonic force.

Keyboard performer Michael Tsalka has won numerous prizes and awards throughout his career. A versatile musician, he performs solo and chamber music repertoire from the Early Baroque to Contemporary on the modern piano, harpsichord, fortepiano, clavichord, square piano and chamber organ. An active international performer and lecturer, he is cur-rently preparing a critical edition of D. G. Türk’s 48 keyboard sonatas for Artaria Editions in New Zeland (www.artaria.com).

The Belfast Harp Festival of 1792 was an event of great significance in the history of Irish music. Edward Bunting, then nineteen, was engaged to annotate all the music he heard, and his three volumes of The Ancient Music of Ireland provide a treasure trove of over 300 bardic tunes and their attributions. Philip Hammond has taken a selection of these tunes and approached them with complete freedom of style. Bunting’s arrangement is the ‘Minia-ture’ and Hammond’s is the ‘Modulation’.

Belfast-born Michael McHale is one of Ireland’s leading pianists. Since completing his stu-dies at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music, he has developed a busy international career as a solo recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician. His début solo album The Irish Piano was selected as CD of the Week by critic Norman Lebrecht. In addition to winning the 2009 Terence Judd/Hallé Award, Michael McHale was awarded the Brennan and Field Prizes at the 2006 AXA Dublin International Piano Competition and the 2005 Camerata Ireland/Accenture Award.

The Wasps Overture has become one of the composer’s most popular works. From the opening orchestral buzzing of a swarm of wasps, it emerges as one of English music’s great tunes, this work is a showcase for the vivid orchestral colours of Vaughan Williams’ writing, presented here to the height of effect by the acclaimed musicians of the Hallé. Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis is one of Vaughan Williams’s most frequently played works and is acknowledged as one of the greatest examples of writing for strings. Although the treat-ment of Tallis’s theme is mainly contemplative, there are dramatic and passionate moments in the Fantasia, which is scored for two string orchestras (the second orchestra comprising only nine players) with solo quartet. The ‘Pastoral’ Symphony is characterized with a mood which is gently elegiac and dark, and which reflects the work’s true genesis. Although the title mistakenly led audiences and critics to associate the work entirely with rural landscapes and English folksong, it is in fact directly related to the First World War of 1914-18. Vaughan Williams, although forty-one when war was declared, enlisted as a private in the Royal Army Medical Corps and served as a wagon orderly in France. Five Variants of ‘Dives and Lazarus’, for strings and harps was written for the New York World Fair in 1939, when Sir Adrian Boult conducted the first performance in Carnegie Hall. Vau-ghan Williams first encountered the folksong Dives and Lazarus in 1893, when he was 21, later collecting several versions, and in this mature work he displays his affection for the melody in variants which are not exact replicas but reminiscences of various versions in several folksong collections, including his own.

With her first critically acclaimed recording for hänssler CLASSIC, «Metamorphosis», pianistAngelika Nebel took an in-depth look at piano arrangements of works by Johann SebastianBach. In her new recording «Illuminationes», she now traverses the full spectrum of trans-criptions, from the 19th and 20th centuries, straight through to the 21st century as well as those from many different countries, for a vision of Bach’s music that is international and timeless; the Soul encountered through the prism of these sacred piano meditations. In addition to well-known composers and arrangers of Bach such as Franz Liszt, Dmitri Kaba-levsky and Egon Petri, there are also some unknown composers. Nevertheless, their trans-criptions are worthy for inclusion and offer further evidence of Bach’s tremendous com-positional stature. Perhaps, it is their own humility that is so very evident as it is with Bachand “his” pianist, Angelika Nebel?

BEETHOVEN, LUDWIG VAN - Missa Solemnis

Beethoven’s sacred masterpiece, the Missa Solemnis, has thrilled audiences with its monu-mental splendor and grandeur of vision since its premiere. Even the master himself descri-bed his Mass as «the greatest work that I have written so far.» And the unusually longduration of the works evolution – originally intended for the occasion of the appointment ofthe Archduke Rudolph of Austria to the Cardinal Archbishop of Olomouc in June 1819 to thescore’s completion in March 1823 - is external evidence of the extraordinary commitment of the intensity the composer’s effort. The Mass reveals Beethoven at the height of his powers and Helmuth Rilling, the Bach-Col-legium Stuttgart, the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart and the outstanding quartet of vocal so-loists have achieved world-wide acclaimed in producing a reference recording of this great masterpiece, which is now available once again in a new edition as part of the “Great Choral Works” series at a special price!

Les Traversées Baroques continues its exploration of the great repertory of sacred music from northern Europe. After Marcin Mielczewski, the ensemble has decided to turn to Mikołaj Zieleński for its new recording, thus rehabilitating this Polish Baroque composer whose biography is no more than a long series of question marks, but whose magnificent music amply compensates for the gaps in our knowledge.

BUSH, GEOFFREY - Small Pieces for Orchestra

This CD for Lyrita includes the first-ever recording of Geoffrey Bush’s Sinfonietta Concer-tante for Cello, with Raphael Wallfisch. Though composition was foremost among his many skills, Bush was something of an all-rounder. He performed as both pianist and organist, made regular broadcasts for the BBC and was also a successful writer. The works included on this disc provide a representative selection of Bush’s writing for chamber orchestra. The Northern Chamber Orchestra was formed in the 1960s and has gained a formidable reputation from its engaging and exciting concerts, tackling a wide range of repertoire from Corelli to Stravinsky and beyond. The members of the orchestra are distinguished chamber musicians who play as principals with other orchestras and regularly appear as soloists. Raphael Wallfisch is one of the most celebrated cellists performing on the international stage. He was born in London into a fa-mily of distinguished musicians, his mother the cellist Anita Lasker-Wallfisch and his father the pianist Peter Wallfisch. Britain’s leading composers have worked closely with Raphael, many having written works especially for him.

Among the most versatile of contemporary performers, cellist Raphael Wallfisch is espe-cially celebrated as a passionate advocate of British music. Concertos by Elgar, Finzi and Walton lie at the heart of his repertoire, which also includes concertante works by Arnold, Bax, Bliss, Havergal Brian, Britten, Alan Bush, Geoffrey Bush, William Busch, Delius, Dyson, Foulds, Holbrooke, Ireland, Maw, Moeran, Andrjez Panuf-nik, Rawsthorne, Rubbra, Lionel Sainsbury and Hugh Wood. He has expanded this genre by commissioning and premiering an impressive and eclectic array of new pieces by, among others, Richard Rodney Bennett, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Kenneth Leighton, James Mac-Millan, Robert Saxton, Giles Swayne, John Tavener and Adrian Williams. All three items presented on this disc were written especially for Wallfisch.

The compositions by Walton and Schnittke were recorded at the concert of Yuri Bashmet and the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society conduc-ted by Dmitri Kitayenko on April 6, 1982. Through his activities, Yuri Bashmet, an outstan-ding musician of today, favoured the extension of viola repertoire, and Dmitri Kitayenko, who became the leader of one of Moscow’s best orchestras after Kirill Kondrashin left the country, were the first performers of these works in the former USSR.

Firma Melodiya presents a jubilee release of one of the most distinguished singers of mo-dern times Elena Obraztsova. The release features fragments of Russian and foreign operas which make up just a portion of Elena Obraztsova’s extensive repertoire numbering over eighty parts. Still, they largely convey the main features of her performing individuality, her mastery of musical dramatic transformation making us recognize the singer’s voice on recordings of different years. The music by Donizetti, Verdi, Saint-Saens, Bizet, Massenet, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky is performed to the accompaniment of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra conducted by the outstanding maestros Boris Khaikin, Odyssey Dimitriadi, Algis Žiūraitis and Mark Ermler.

For the anniversary of maestro Vladimir Spivakov, Firma Melodiya presents a unique, pre-viously unreleased recording of the Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra made on 28 De-cember 1988 at the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory.

In fact, that is exactly what happened when their piano trio came to life at the beginning of 2009 and was greeted with great enthusiasm from audiences that found themselves bowled over by the intense togetherness and extreme musicality of this exciting new en-semble!The trio’s first CD (Nimbus), of both Mendelssohn piano trios, was launched in February 2012 to the highest critical acclaim. READ THOMAS, AUGUSTA - Music for Strings

The first two volumes of this Augusta Read Thomas recording series focused on orchestral and chamber/ piano music respectively, and the third volume was a recording of a live 50th birthday concert presented by the New Haven Symphony. This fourth volume has yet a dif-ferent focus: music primarily featuring strings and almost exclusively performed by young musicians. Thomas wrote: “If one were to shut one’s eyes while listening to this CD, one should imagine a stage full of passionate young musicians. Two of these performances are e ven taken from live, unedited concert recordings (Juilliard and Tanglewood). Thus this disc as a whole celebrates the skill and dedication of youthful musicians who play with utter commitment and flair.”

One of the biggest challenges facing an improvising musician is to deliver a performance that holds the attention of the listener when playing completely solo. To achieve success, one must dig deep into one’s musical psyche in order to invoke the muse within. The improvisations on the album are all unedited single-takes. I was helped enormously in my task by having such a wonderful instrument at my disposal. This, combined with the benevolent acoustic of Wyastone’s magnificent concert hall, ensured that I was given the very best chance to succeed.Geoff Eales

The four string quartets largely span my adult composing career (of forty years) from my early twen-ties to the present and are the only single genre to which I have consistently returned. Their com-bined narrative represents a ‘compositional journey’ which has consisted of two parallel paths that in a sense glancing retrospectively over music’s 20th-century development, shadow it. Those two paths have both conflicted with and complemented each other; I refer to their lyricism-tonality on the one hand contrasted with starkness-atonality on the other, traits that have become far more focussed musically in a 21st-century post-modern world. From this perspective, these four individual works may be better appreciated as one entity through similarities - not initially intentional but now apparent - and their differences. Each quartet was conceived as non-programmatic abstract pieces of music however the first and fourth are ‘descriptive’ in that they were inspired by specific landscapes: respectively the East Suffolk Coast, and Beacon Fell Lancashire. Only the fourth quartet has a title and four distinct movements.Christopher Wright

The Lord’s Prayer is the most universal prayer in Christendom, prayed by believers of all denominations. What would be more natural, then, than to bring together several settings of this prayer on a CD with the outstanding Salzburg Bach Choir? The CD was recorded in a relatively modern church in the Salzkammergut (Salzburg Pro-vince, Austria), equipped with wooden ceilings and walls on the inside, resulting in very special acoustics. The recordings were made in May. When the technical cuts of the recor-dings were made in early autumn, it became clear that soft birdsong, almost but not quite unnoticeable, could be heard during the singing for nearly the whole time. “We originally thought that we would have to cut out the twittering, but then we decided to leave it in”, says choir director Alois Glassner. The reason is that the heavenly singers are part of this music.

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach was the eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. His works were considered lost for a long time; since the 1990s, however, the number of recordings of his music has grown, which is not least due to a discovery of scores made in Kiev by a Harvardprofessor at the Berlin Singakademie.

SAARIAHO, KAIJA - Emilie Suite; Quatre Instants; Terra Memoria

Ondine new release includes works written in the last decade by one of the most important Fin-nish contemporary composers, Kaija Saariaho (b. 1958). Two of the works, the orchestral version of Quatre instants and Émilie Suite, feature the award-winning soprano Karen Vourc’h. Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg is conducted by the orchestra’s new Music Director, Marko Letonja.Émilie Suite is a 25-minute work based on Saariaho’s 80-minute monodrama Opera Émilie. The Opera tells the dramatic story of a true historical character, Marquise Émilie du Châtelet (1706–1749), one of the earliest woman scientists, who was also a mathematician and a physician. The suite includes three songs and two orchestral interludes from the Opera.Quatre instant is one of Saariaho’s vocal masterpieces, a song cycle in four movements, originally written for voice and piano, but soon adapted into an orchestral version by the composer. The songs which are based on texts written by Amin Maalouf for Kaija Saariaho reflect various dimensions of love.Terra Memoria is a work for string orchestra, originally commissioned by the Emerson String Quartet. This meditative work is dedicated “for those departed”.

For the Austrian baroque violinist Gunar Letzbor, the music of the Habsburg Empire is significantly different from that of the other European cultural centres in France, Italy and Germany. The Habsburg Imperial Court was a melting pot of many different cultures in which the zest for living of southerners, the melancholy of the Slavs, the formalistic traits of the French, the courtly ceremony of the Spanish and the original Alpine culture of the German-speaking region come together. In his concert project «»Klang der Kulturen»» (The Sound of the Cultures), together with his ensemble Ars Antiqua Austria, he has occupied himself over a period of ten years with the individual countries that formed the roots of and influences on the music of baroque Vienna, documen-ting them in the form of live recordings. The result of this work is a box containing 10 CDs, each of which represents a country: the first six CDs are dedi-cated to the Habsburg patrimonial lands of Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, Bohemia and Moravia. Letzbor does not hesitate to immerse himself in the traditional folk music of these countries in order to document the major influences of this music on the art music that ultimately found its way to the Imperial Court in Vienna. The other four CDs document the influences of the most important European centres of Spain, Venice, Rome and Paris on Austrian composers. The result is a comprehensive compendium showing European baroque music from a point of view unusual for us today. This collection reveals many exciting new perspectives in over ten hours of musical works, most of which are recorded here for the first time.

The ensemble dolce risonanza, together with the vocal ensemble Profeti della Quinta, follow the traces of Orlan-do di Lasso and the Bavarian Court Orchestra in Munich on this recording. This ensemble, under the direction of its kapellmeister Orlando di Lasso (1532–1594), was one of the most important musical institutions of its time. Selected singers from all over Europe and the best Italian instrumental virtuosos formed the ensemble of the art-loving Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria (1528–1579) of the House of Wittelsbach. Orlando di Lasso composed his Psalmi penitentiali around 1560 for this select ensemble. The expressive settings of the Psalm texts have been preserved in a magnificent manuscript by the Munich court painter Hans Mielich, decorated with wonderful miniatures. Albrecht V forbade Lasso to publish his Penitential Psalms and preserved the valuable manuscript in has musica reservata in his private library, where only selected guests were permitted to view them. The most recent musicological research has reached the conclusion that the famous illustration of the Munich Court Orchestra represents a specific performance situation of Lasso’s Penitential Psalms. In order to attain a genuine performance in accordance with Mielich’s painting, dolce risonanza commissioned the reconstruction of string and wind instruments especially for this project; these were newly built by leading instrument-makers in the area of historical performance practice. It is thus possible, for the first time after about 450 years, to experience this music in the original instrumentation of the Munich Court Orchestra under Orlando di Lasso.

When Johann Hermann Schein became Kantor at the church of Saint Thomas in Leipzig in 1616, he had, on the one hand, to satisfy the liturgical demands of his Lutheran parish and, on the other, compose music that was truly contemporary, sensible to the new style coming out of Italy. Schein exploited the new possibilities brought by the basso continuo, demons-trated his mastery of musical rhetoric and wrote extremely ambitious music of great ex-pressive force. The instrumentation calls for instruments such as the cornet, trombone and dulcian, Schein drawing his musicians from the forces of the Stadtpfeiffer and Ratsmusiker, guilds of instrumentalists attached to the City of Leipzig since the 15th century. For this musical portrait of Schein, one of the greatest German composers of the 17th century and one of J. S. Bach’s most talented predecessors, InAlto presents an itinerary to the sources of the German cantata and testimony to the extraordinary tradition of city musicians perpe-tuated over the centuries. In addition to Schein’s music, this heritage is represented here by Johann Schelle, Gottfried Reiche and J. S. Bach.

Dated respectively 1650 and 1653, the Requiem Masses by Capuana and Rubino are appa-rently the only two settings of the Requiem to have been composed in Sicily during the Baroque period. Capuana’s work is imbued with the intense emotion of the madrigal school whilst the second is a true apotheosis of Renaissance polyphony.

Alexander Raskatov is gathering an increasingly impressive international reputation, with performances of his opera A Dog’s Heart at English National Opera, Netherlands Opera and Milan’s La Scala. His new Piano Concerto, written for pianist and performance artist Tomoko Mukaiyama and commissioned by the Seattle Symphony, is a major addition to the reper-toire. By turns dramatic, poetic, startling and tender, it’s a journey into new sound-worlds, inspired by a childhood walk in the forest surrounded by butterflies. The work is appropria-tely coupled with innovative music from a previous Russian generation — Stravinsky’s Riteof Spring — captured live in an electrifying performance in June 2014 in Seattle’s Benaroya Hall.

Oslo Vocalis : Prelude

Fresh voices from the North

‘Prelude’ is a beautiful release from the Norwegian female choir Oslo Vocalis, presenting a great selection of both well-known repertoire from Holst, Fauré and Grieg and also new classics from composers including Sandra Milliken and Ola Gjeilo. ‘Ave Maria’ is a lyrical piece by the young Gustav Holst. Graceful is also Fauré’s ‘Messe basse’ (short mass) for female choir and organ. Grieg’s ‘Ved Rondane’ is something of a Norwegian national icon, and Geir Tveitt’s ‘Velkomne med Æra’ is among his best known works.

The title track of the album is written by New York based composer Ola Gjeilo. Another Norwegian is Frank Havrøy, whose ‘O Magnum Mysterium’ will be a welcome discovery for listeners. Australian composer and choral conductor Sandra Milliken’s ‘Fanfare of Praise’ also receives a great performance of Oslo Vocalis on this recording.

The title “Heavy Sleep”, is meant to reference not only the eponymous opening work on this Album, but also to note the phrase’s allusion to death and eternal sleep. For me, each work on this album re-lates either directly or spiritually to the theme of death, rebirth, or both. Voices of other composers or allusions to their own or others’ works are also found throughout these pieces, often appearing as subtle homage to composers of the past: In the Andres work there are echos of both Bach and Chopin; in the Fairouz a direct tribute to Ligeti; in the Kurtag, Reger and Siloti arrangements there are reflections on Bach through the art of transcription; and in the original works of Bach himself, particularly in the great B minor Fugue, symbolic voices of God and man. Together, these works offer a touching perspective to the close spiritual connectivity we all share as artists and as human beings, culture to culture, past and present.Pianist Bruce Levingston is one of today’s leading figures in contemporary music. Many of the world’s most important composers have written works for him and his Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center world premiere performances of their works have won notable critical acclaim. The New York Times has called him “one of today’s most adventurous musicians” and praises his performances as “graceful”, “dreamy, and “hauntingly serene.” The New Yorker has described him as “elegant and en-gaging... a poetic pianist who has a gift for glamorous programming,” while The Washington Post has lauded his “wonderfully even touch” and “timeless reverie, which Levingston projected beautifully.”

The history of the string quartet genre in Spain arguably begins with the luminous and crisp quartets by Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805), a composer who was Italian by birth, but a Spaniard in heart, spirit and language. Half a century later we would witness the three landmark quartets written by that prodigious and promising young comet called Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga (1806-1826). But since the tragic and untimely death of the “Spanish Mozart”, the creation of string quartets in Spain seemed to sink into a lethargy which would last until the begin-nings of the 20th century.!During the year 1901, the Cuarteto Francés was formed in Madrid. This string quartet encouraged local com-posers to write quartets, several of which were premiered in its concerts. This initiative triggered the writing of the first Spanish Post-romantic masterpieces for quartet. Among them were the fourteen quartets by Conrado del Campo (himself a member of the Cuarteto Francés), the quartets by Tomás Bretón, the string quartet (“de la guitarra”) by Joaquín Turina and, of course, the four string quartets by Ruperto Chapí, by then a well established and successful composer who had never written any chamber music.!The four quartets by Chapí burst like a fresh breeze in the Spanish chamber music landscape. Here is a composer who masterfully captures the Spanish character; the poise, the sincerity and above all, the simple joy of a nation that had suffered too much. Chapí brilliantly funnels the color and purely Spanish drama of the zarzuela into the almost abstract and Central European genre of the string quartet.!

TwoPianists Records brings you an elegant disc by oboist James Austin Smith in collabo-ration with pianist Luis Magalhaes and harpist Bridget Kibbey. Most of the works on this disc are, upon first listen, foreign to ears accustomed to a diet of Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn. They are on the chilly periphery of classical music, abrasively private and unrevealing in comparison to their gregarious, largely romantic neighbors. But if they were truly unrelatable, truly alien, they would lack humanity - they would reject curiosity and re-main forever opaque. And this is where the beauty of recording is embodied - to the keen, curious ear these works reveal themselves. They shed their frosty outer layer and expose a warmth of expression, a depth of atmosphere and a technicolor palette that rewards unlike any instant-gratification work of art. The work will draw you from being a tolerant (or perhaps even intolerant) neighbor, across its threshold, into a welcoming, if not complex environment. It will foster a deep friendship.

Since the dawn of time, night and its mysteries have inspired poets and musicians. This recital for voice and piano recalls that: it is presented as a nocturnal promenade through diverse aesthetics, troubling atmospheres and profoundly contrasting emotions. The programme features the known (Schubert, Brahms, Fauré) and the lesser known (Bax, Finzi or Berkeley) to form a fascinating ode to the night.Total time : 53’48

Yury Martynov here plays the same Blüthner piano of 1867 chosen for the previous volume in this series as he moves on to Beethoven’s Fourth and Fifth symphonies in their transcrip-tions by Liszt. The Hungarian composer wrote of his approach: ‘I will be satisfied if I have accomplished the task of the intelligent engraver, the conscientious translator, who grasp the spirit of a work along with the letter, and thereby help to propagate knowledge of the masters and the appreciation of the beautiful.

When it comes to seminal albums in alternative rock, Pixies’ 1988 debut Surfer Rosa qualifies as a true game-changer. With strong production and even stronger songs, the album tore a rift in the rock ‘n roll continuum, influencing everyone from Kurt Cobain to Radiohead. That influence remains as steadfast as ever among the feverish minds behind Asphalt Orchestra, the 12-piece New York-based marching band with an eclectic ear for new music and boundary-blurring arrangements. The band’s unpredictable repertoire includes the music of Goran Bregovich, David Byrne, Frank Zappa, Charles Min-gus, Tatsuya Yoshida, Meshuggah, Yoko Ono and more, so it’s only fitting they should choose to tackle a boiste-rous, at times even downright ornery noise-rock classic, right? And tackle it they do. From the rambunctious opening cut “Bone Machine” to the off-kilter, otherworldly arran-gement of the radio hit “Gigantic,” AOPP remains true to the punkish attitude of the original while exploring the rich melodies that underpin these alt-rock classics. In fact, Pixies frontman Charles Thompson (a/k/a Black Francis) was so taken with the project that he invited the band to join him and Pixies on tour for two popup dates in early 2014. (At the famed Capitol Theater just north of Manhattan, fans expressed their glee by singing along with Asphalt’s version of “Bone Machine.”)Intrepid, energetic and unconventional, AOPP touches a nerve that connects rock and new music — a daring brew lauded by the New York Times as “...quirky, funky, inventive and idiomatic.”

In the words of journalist and WNYC radio host John Schaefer, composer and bassist Florent Ghys writes pieces that “blend elements of minimalism, pop music and a dose of extravagant wit.” For his latest feat of magic in the studio, Ghys presents Télévision — an epic foray into classical forms, musique concrète, samples and sci-fi that warps the very edges of contemporary music. As Ghys himself describes it, “Télévision is about weather reports, digital music, plastic beauty, sy-nesthesia, and dance.” All 13 pieces were composed, played, recorded, filmed and mixed by Ghys — and we say filmed, because Ghys has taken the extraordinary step of creating a video to accompany each piece, in playful tribute to the medium that inspired the message. On Télévision, Florent Ghys plays, performs and perpetrates: alto double bass, applause, bass drum, composition, editing, guitar, hair dryers, hand claps, hi-hat, max programming, mix, mouth hi-hat, piano, shakers, snare, solfège, video, voice and weather reports.Télévision was recorded in the bathroom of the Veltin studio at the MacDowell Colony, NH, and in Florent’s bedroom in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY.

DONIZETTI, GAETANO - Anna Bolena

This production of Anna Bolena faithfully meets the musical vi-sion proposed by Fabio Biondi. The mise-en-scène, therefore, excludes any explicit reference to the plot’s historical time, and the events have been set at the beginning of the 1800s, when Donizetti’s opera was premièred. This shift in time was meant to match, visually, the important musical reconstruction made by Fabio Biondi: just as he tapered down the orchestral forces to 19th-century proportions and conformed to the perfor-ming practice of the day – using, for example, the fortepiano as a concertante instrument, which created surprisingly new sound effects compared to traditional versions, often still too linked to the late-romantic symphonic model – we have trans-formed the world of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII into a meta-phor of 19th-century society, in which an unhappy woman, an ill-fated, condemned and spurned woman earns the crown of martyrdom and the halo of sainthood.

MOZART/ TCHAIKOVSKY/ STRAVINSKY - EUROPAKON-ZERT 1993 from London

• The founding of the Berliner Philharmoniker on the first of May in 1882, is annually celebrated with a concert in an Euro-pean city of cultural significance• In 1993 the Berliner Philharmoniker chose the Royal Albert Hall for their third EUROPAKONZERT, this time under the baton of Bernard Haitink• They were joined by Soloist Frank Peter Zimmerman for Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3, a concerto which is a finely balanced dialogue between orchestra and soloist and which is said to be very hard to bemastered• The repertoire is complemented by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovs-ky’s Fantasy Overture from «Romeo and Juliet», Igor Strawins-ky’s The Rite of the Spring (Scenes from the Pagan Russia in two parts) and PeterTchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker• On this recording, Bernard Haitink, who is now an honorary member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, spurs the instrumen-talists to what has become a very distinguished performance in a concert hall that is know for its particularly difficult acous-tics

BRAHMS/ RAVEL/ BERLIOZ/ BIZET/ VERDI - Claudio Abbado New Year’s Eve Concerts

• New Year’s Eve Concert 1996 – Dances and Gypsy TunesThe fascinating Russian virtuoso violinist, Maxim Vengerov (winner of the Echo Klassik) lends radiance to the gala performance under the baton of Claudio Abbado. Johannes Brahms’Hungarian Dances and Gipsy Songs; Maurice Ravel’s Tzigane and La Valse and Hector Berlioz’s Hungarian March make this New Year’s Eve with the Berli-ner Philharmoniker unforgettable• New Year’s Eve Concert 1997 – A Tribute to Carmen The program of the Berlin Philharmonic bore the title «Dances of Life, Love, and Death», and it was hardly coincidental that it was meant as an homage to Carmen. The recording of the Berlin Phil-harmonic Orchestra’s traditional New Year’s Eve Concert, conducted by Claudio Abbado, offers not only a cross section of worldfamous melodies from George Bizet’s opera, but also famous dance music that was intensely or subtly influenced by it. With: Anne Sofie von Otter, Bryn Terfel, Roberto Alagna, Gil Shaham · Mikhail Pletnev• New Year’s Eve Concert 1998 – Songs of Love and DesireLove was the theme of the 1998 New Year’s Eve Concert. And who wrote better music about love than Mozart and Verdi?Maestro Claudio Abbado has chosen two of the best Mozart inter-preters, Christine Schäfer and Simon Keenlyside, for this traditio-nally meaningful event. Marcelo Álvarez from Argentina interprets highlights of the tenor repertoire, and Italian Primadonna Mirella Freni tops the occasion with a breathtaking performance of the Let-ter Scene of Tchaikovsky’s Eugen Onegin

CHOPIN, FREDERIC - Chopin, A Documentary by Angelo Bozzolini

• With Bobby McFerrin, Daniel Barenboim, Martha Argerich, Vla-dimir Ashkenazy, Charles Rosen, Alexander Lonquich, Adam Hara-siewicz, Janusz Prusinowski Trio and others• The documentary offers a careful use of the epistolary of the “pro-tagonist”, entrusting to letters written and received by Chopin. The writings are interpreted by the two renowned actors Fabrizio Benti-voglio and Margherita Buy• Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) was born in Żelazowa Wola, near Warsaw, in a setting far from the limelight of the great musical tra-dition, but at the same time he absorbs the winds that blow in from that same tradition. His education is the fruit of Polish culture and cannot be separated from that, but he also feels the influence of the three main cultures of the time: Italian, Austro-German and French.• This documentary describes the places that provided the basis for the young composer’s imagination, from the capital Warsaw to rural Poland, where Chopin spends part of his childhood and is formed as a man and a musician, on to Paris, theatre of the second half of the musician’s life• The film evokes the atmosphere of the Polish countryside: Żelazowa Wola, Szafarnia, Torun are described through documentary footage that restores the suggestiveness, which is still alive today, of the folk-lore Chopin was so attached to. Without forgetting, naturally, War-saw, with the world’s most important piano competition, preserves the memory of one of the most important characters of European culture
