nagoya et montréal partagent un point en commun : le temps boudeur, imprévisible, et l'obsession des habitants à essayer de le pré-dire. C’est parler de la pluie et du beau temps, mais c’est aussi chose sérieuse : quand les montréalais tiennent bon à l’hiver long, satis-faits finalement que « ça forge le caractère ! », les nagoyens, pareils, se préparent à l’été

lent et moite avec une télécommande du cli-matiseur dans une main et un breuvage glacé dans l’autre. On peut toujours attendre avec impatience les saisons opposées, mais c’est une attente que je comprend trop bien.

Ceci dit, on fait passer l’humidité pesante et la routine continue. Dans l’article de ce mois,

englishnagoya and montreal share something in com-mon: moody, unpredictable weather, and the obsession of its inhabitants with trying to predict it. it's small talk that's also serious business, and where montrealers hunker down for the long winter, satisfied that ultimately "it builds char-acter!", so do Nagoyans ready themselves for a slow, drenching summer with an a/C remote in one hand and an icy beverage in the other. We may always be looking forward to opposite seasons, but it's an anticipation that i can relate to all too well.

that being said, we push through the thick humidity, and the daily grind goes on! In this month's article, i'll give you a short glimpse into my day-to-day as an english teacher. if i digress into absurdities, you can blame to heat delirium.

getting there:I work five days a week and have a "home branch" near home, but I often work at other schools too. thankfully, aichi Prefecture's public transport is top-notch. the job does consist of a lot of travel time, but honestly, there's so much of nagoya and it's surroundings that i wouldn't have enjoyed if i didn't have to travel for work. some smaller towns, like ichinomiya or iwakura, are incredibly charming!

the Job:lesson planning is practically a non-issue when you work for a conversation school. Once you have the method down, the textbooks are quite straightforward. it’s just a matter of keeping your students engaged. i often take this opportu-nity to learn something about them and their relationship to their hometown. in this way, each student i meet also brings a new perspective to

my adopted city. some have lived their whole lives here and have seen it change immensely. Others are partial to the big city and know it intimately. many are from out of town and so we share discoveries. in this way, my students have been invaluable. I've learned so much!

getting Home:the trains home are generally packed with sleepy business-folk, ties loosened and quiet. Depending on the day i've had i might be one of them. the train ride offers time to go over the day and think about tomorrow.

the Finish line:Which brings me to food. People in nagoya love to talk about eating almost as much as they love the act itself. it's business, it's pleasure and i think most of all, it's a catharsis. at the end of every day, hierarchies are faded and replaced with a shared love for good food and drink. as a lover and seeker of food myself, i'm discovering a new relationship with it here that's positively satiating! Friendships are made, and made solid, over food and drink. my daily grind is mine alone, and the same can be said for every one of the hundreds of business-folk walking the restaurant-lined streets after a hard day's work. But we all end up in the same restaurants, often at the same tables, and it absolutely makes do-ing it all again worth it.

it’s fascinating to learn the rhythms of a city and it’s people, and to watch my own daily life synchronize in so many ways with the lives of others. sometimes i feel as if i’m just a passen-ger on a bus and the whole city is driving some-where. it’s different from home, and precisely the sort of adventure i asked for. Français On le sait tous, les Japonais travail-lent fort. Dorment -ils, mangent-ils, respirent-ils? Par-fois on se le demande mais, en tout cas, lorsqu'ils ont des congés fériés, c'est pas mal du tout! Petite parenthèse, selon une étude du Center for Economic and Policy Research, le Canada autant que le Japon serait parmi les trois pires pays en termes de vacan-ces rémunérées...

mais bon, revenons à nos moutons. Depuis juillet 1996 se fête Umi no hi – le jour de la mer. J'étais moi-même étonnée de trouver un jour férié aussi récent. ses origines sont connues et ne remontent ni à un ancien culte shinto ni à un rituel obscur découlant du tenchikaibyaku (mythe de la formation du Japon).

la tradition remonte à 1941, à cette époque se fêtait Umi no kinen bi – le jour du souvenir de la marine- en hommage au voyage de 1876 de meiji-tennou. le voyage de l'empereur s'était fait à bord d'un bateau à vapeur fabriqué en Écosse et nommé le meiji-maru. Ce dernier est le plus ancien bateau à vapeur qui ex-iste au Japon. en 1996 il y eut un changement légis-latif afin que les fêtes nationales soient observées le lundi, afin d'offrir une fin de semaine de trois jours.

Cette année, Umi no hi se fêtera le 15 juillet et sera l'occasion de faire un voyage amusant à la plage. Que font les Japonais à la plage? Ben...du bbq! Sauf qu'au Japon le yakisoba remplace les hamburgers. vous pourriez aussi jouer à suika wari; Cela s'apparente au jeu du piñata. les yeux d'un joueur sont bandés, un bâton lui est donné et les autres joueurs le tourne pour le désorienter. Le but est de fendre le melon afin de manger la délicieuse chaire. Oishiso!

J'aimerais ça lors de la St-Jean ou du 1er juillet m'évader au bord de mer. D'ailleurs, le 21 juin le parc Jean Drapeau offre une journée de baignade gratuite...ce n'est pas la mer (à boire!) mais je suis certaine qu'on peut quand même jouer au suika wari et se faire du yakisobaa!

日焼け止めを忘れずに！ご存知の通り、日本人は勤勉である。時々、彼らは睡眠や食事の時間をちゃんと取っているのだろうかと不思議に思う。息をしているのかさえ疑問に思うが、いずれにしても休日を取ることは決して悪いことではない！因みに、 Center for Economic and Policy Research(CEPR)の研究によると、カナダと日本は有給休暇日数でワースト3位にランキングされている・・・。

さて、本題に戻ろう。1996年7月から、「海の日」が国民の祝日とされている。私はこのような祝日を見つけて本当に驚いた。この由来は、天地開闢(日本神話の天地創造伝説)からの古来の神事でもなくあやふやな習慣でもない。

この由来は、1876年の明治天皇の御巡幸に敬意を表し、海の記念日が制定された1941年に遡る。明治天皇は英国製の灯台巡視船「明治丸」に御乗船された。明治丸は現存する日本最古の帆付鉄船である。1996年、法改正により国民の祝日として制定され、後に勤労者が3連休をとれるように第3月曜日に制定された。

今年の海の日は7月15日であり、海の日と言えばビーチだ。日本人はビーチで何をするのか？それは・・・、BBQ！といっても、日本ではハンバーガーのかわりにやきそばを食べたり、スイカ割りをする。これはピニャータに似ている。目隠しされた人は棒を持ち、方向感覚を失くすためにグルグルと回転させられる。その後、スイカを食べることができるようにスイカをかち割りに行くのだ。おいしそう!

ケベックデー(6月24日)またはカナダデー(7月1日)にビーチに行けたらなぁ。6月21日にJean Drapeau parc のプールが無料になる。海ではないがやきそばを食べたり、スイカ割りを楽しむことができるはずだ。

Do they sleep, do they eat, do they even breath? some-times one wonders but, in any case, when they do have day off it's not bad at all! anyways, back to business. since July 1996 Umi no hi – the day of the sea- is celebrated. i was truly quite stunned to find such a recent holiday. Its origins are known, they aren't an ancient shinto ritual nor an obscure remnant from the tenchikaibyaku (the legendary Japanese creation myth.)

Oishiso!

i wish i could go to the beach for the st-Jean or for July 1st. speaking of which, June 21st will be a free day of swimming at the Jean Drapeau parc... it's not the ocean but i'm sure you can still eat yakisoba and play suika wari.

journalier de ma vie en tant que pro-fesseur d’anglais. si je m’égare dans l’absurdité, vous pouvez tenir le coup de chaleur responsable.

pour y aller : Je travaille cinq jours par semaine. J’ai un bureau près de chez moi, mais je travaille, aussi, souvent dans d’autres établissements. Heureuse-ment, le transport public de la préfec-ture d’aichi est excellent. le travail comprend certes beaucoup de temps de parcours, mais honnêtement, il y a tant à nagoya et dans ses alentours que je n'aurais pas pu apprécier si je ne devais pas voyager pour aller au travail. Des petites villes, comme ichi-nomiya ou iwakura, sont incroyable-ment charmantes !

le métier : la préparation des cours ne cause pratiquement aucun problème pour une école de conversation. Une fois que vous avez la méthode en main, les manuels sont plutôt simples. C'est juste une question de garder vos étudi-ants intéressés. Je profite souvent de cette opportunité pour en apprendre un peu plus sur eux et leur relation avec leur ville natale. De cette façon, chaque étudiant que je rencontre m’apporte une nouvelle perspective sur ma ville adoptive. Certains ont vécu ici toute leur vie, puis l'ont vu énormément changer. D'autres ont un faible pour cette grande ville et la con-naissent intimement. Beaucoup vien-nent de l'extérieur. nous partageons donc des découvertes. ainsi, mes étu-diants me sont d'une aide précieuse. J'ai beaucoup appris !

pour rentrer : les trains pour rentrer sont générale-ment remplis de personnes d'affaires fatiguées, silencieuses et à cravates desserrées. en fonction de la journée que j'ai eu, je pourrais être l'une d'elles. le voyage en train offre du temps pour revenir sur la journée et réfléchir à de-main.

la ligne d'arrivée : Ce qui m'amène à la nourriture. Les gens à nagoya aiment parler de man-ger presqu'autant qu'ils n'aiment le faire. C'est les affaires, c'est le plaisir et je pense par-dessus tout, c'est la catharsis. À la fin de chaque journée, les hiérarchies se dissipent et font place à la passion commune de la bonne nourriture et de la boisson. moi-même amateur de nourriture, je dé-couvre une nouvelle relation avec elle ici qui comble positivement ! L'amitié se forme, et se forme solidement, au-tour de nourriture et de boisson. mon quotidien m’appartient à moi seul, et de même pour chacune des centaines de personnes d'affaires cheminant les rues de restaurants alignés après une dure journée au travail. Mais nous fi-nissons tous dans les mêmes restau-rants, souvent aux mêmes tables, et refaire tout ça en vaut absolument la peine.

C'est fascinant de découvrir les rythmes d'une ville et de ses habitants, et de voir ma propre vie quotidienne se synchroniser de différentes façons avec la vie des autres. Des fois, j'ai l'impression que je suis juste un pas-sager dans un bus et que la ville entière conduit quelque part. C'est différent de chez nous, mais c'est exactement le genre d'aventure que je cherchais. Au mois prochain !

日々の仕事： 英語教師の一日名古屋とモントリオールは似ている。 それは、気分屋で、気まぐれな天気で、それを予想しようとする住民の執念だ。世間話をするのも大事なことだ。モントリオールの人は長い冬に気合を入れ、「それが人格を形成する」と満足しているし、名古屋人は、片手にエアコンのリモコン、もう片手に冷たい飲み物を持ちながら過ごす退屈で汗だくの夏を迎える覚悟ができている。私たちはいつも反対の季節を望むようで、実はすべてを見越しているのだ。

「じっとりした暑さを押しのけ」ながら日々の仕事を進めよう！今月は、英語教師としての私の日課を簡単に紹介しよう。話が変な方向に反れたら、暑さのせいなのでご了承を。 職場へ：仕事は週5日制。「ホーム・ブランチ」が自宅から近いところにあるが、時々他校でも教えている。愛知県の公共交通機関は、おかげ様でとても便利だ。仕事で移動することが多いが、正直言って、名古屋とその近郊を移動することがなかったら、こんなに楽しめなかったと思う。一宮や岩倉のような小さな町は非常に魅力的なのだ！

仕事：英会話スクールで教える場合、授業計画は特に問題にならない。教科書にそって教えることは簡単だからだ。しかし、生徒を授業に惹きつけることは難しい。そこで私は、この会話クラスを生徒達や彼らの地域との関わりを知る絶好の場としている。そうすることで、出会った生徒一人一人から私の住み慣れてきた街への新しい視点を教えてもらうことができるからだ。生徒の中には生まれてからずっとこの地に住んでいて、町の変化を見てきた人もいるし、大都市が大好きで大都市のことなら何でも知っている生徒もいる。市外から通学している生徒も多いので色々な情

報が交換できる。このように、生徒達は私にとって非常に貴重な存在なのだ。彼らからいろいろな事を教えてもらった。 帰宅：通常、帰宅電車はネクタイを緩めてウトウトしている会社帰りの人達で一杯になる。日によっては私もそんな一人となる。電車に乗っている時間は、一日のできごとを振り返って、翌日の計画を立てる貴重な時間だ。 一日の最後：最後は食べ物について。名古屋人は、食べるのと同じくらい食べ物について話すのが好きだ。それは仕事であり、娯楽で、とりわけカタルシスといったところか。一日の終わりには上下関係が薄れ、美味しい食べ物と飲み物を分かち合う関係に代わる。私は愛食家なので美味しいもの探しが好きだ。新しい発見ができるこの地に、かなり満足している！飲食を通じてできた友情も固くなる。私の日々の仕事は私個人のもので、それは一生懸命働いた一日の終わりに飲食街を歩く数百人のビジネスマン一人一人にも同じことが言えるだろう。最後にはみんなが同じレストラン、しかも時には同じテーブルで膝を交える価値は絶対にあるのだ。 町と人々のリズムを知り、自分の日課がいろんな意味で他の人たちと調和するのを感じることは魅惑的だ。時々、私は単なるバスの乗客で、私を乗せた町自体がどこかへ移動しているかのようにも思う。それは、故郷とは異なり、正確に言えば求めていた冒険のようなものなのだ。では、また翌月！

東京在住の友人と久しぶりに逢おうということになり、待ち合わせ場所をJR渋谷駅のハチ公前にした。

日本人にとっては、“定番中の定番”のこの場所で待ち合わせするのは初めての体験で、おのぼりさんのようにきょろきょろわくわく。ハチ公像前になんとか立ち位置を確保して、改めて周囲を観察してみると、携帯の画面を見ている日本人に混ざって、カメラを持ってうろうろしている観光客風の外国人が多いのに気づく。実は、JR渋谷駅前のスクランブル交差点は、外国人にとって東京観光一番の写真スポットらしいのだ。四方八方から一斉に人が渡って交差する風景は、某国のマスゲームを見ているように感動的でさえあるらしい。

日本のあるテレビ番組で、面白い実験をやっていた。場所は、JR東京山手線の田端駅前。バングラディッシュ人Aさん、トルコ人Bさん、オーストラリア人Cさん、日本に着いて間もない彼らと東京在住の日本人Dさん、それぞれがカメラを持って、その周辺でもっとも日本らしい風景の撮影をするという企画だった。JR田端駅は、日本人さえも全くピンと来ない、観光名所からは外れている場所だ。

その場所でまずAさんが撮影したのは、高架を走る東北新幹線の写真だった。Aさんの国では、あんなに早く正確な時間で走る列車は考えられないとのことだった。Bさんは、食堂のウィンドーにあった食品サンプル。「言葉が分からなくても、どんなものか分かるし指せば注文できるので便利」と答えていた。Cさんがファインダーに納めたのは、駐輪場。たくさんの自転車がきちんと整頓して停められているのは、日本だけだと関心しきり。そして日本人Dさんが撮影したのは、路地奥にあった小さな神社の鳥居。なんだか、日本人の方がステレオタイプな日本観を引きずっていて、身近にある日本の良さに気づいていないようで面白かった。

最近の日本の情報バラエティ番組では、「世界で○○なのは日本だけ」「世界から、日本の△△はこう見られている」といった外国から見た日

本ネタが連発されている。「日本が世界でどう見られているのかが非常に気になる」という観点で、外国人の目を通して日本を再認識するのはよいことではあるが、それが、日本を好意的に見てくれる他国の人たちの声を聞くことで、安心感を得ようとするだけなら、ちょっと寂しい気がする。

Le japonisme à travers le viseurJ'ai donné un rendez-vous à ami de longue date qui habite à tokyo que je n'ai pas rencontré depuis longtemps. nous avons décidé de nous rencontrer devant la statue de Hachiko, à shibuya. Comme c'est la première fois que je donne rendez-vous dans un endroit con-sidéré "classique" chez les Japonais, je suis tellement entousiaste que je regarde partout comme si j'étais un touriste à tokyo.À peine arrivée debout devant la statue du chien Hachi-kô, j'observais autour. Je me suis rendue compte que parmis les Japonais fixés

sur leur cellulaires, il y a pas mal des touristes étrangers qui flâ-nent autour portant des avec leur appareil photo en main. J'ai en-tendu qu'aujourd'hui, parmis tous les lieux touristiques à tokyo, l'intersection de la station JR shibuya, est l'endroit le plus populaire pour prendre des photos. La scène où les gens viennent de toutes les directions pour traverser l'intersection est impréssionante - on dirait que le pays au complet organise un jeu de foule.

Dans le cadre d'une émission de la télévision japonaise, une ex-périence intéressante s'est déroulée.Devant la station JR tabata, 3 personnes ont participé à cet essai: un Bangladais, un turc, un aus-tralien (tous nouveaux venus au Japon) et un Japonais. tous munis d'un appareil photo, on leur a demandé de prendre une photo d'un paysage qui leur apparaissait typiquement japonais. il faut dire que la station de JR tabata, ce n'est pas du tout un endroit touristique; même les japonais ne la connaissent pas vraiment.Un Bangladais a pris une photo du shinkansen, le tGv japonais qui passe sur des rails surélévés. selon lui, dans son pays, il est impensable d'avoir un train qui est si ponctuel. Quant au turc, il a pris la photo des échantillons de nourritures qui étaient éxposés dans

les vitrines d'une cantine. Il dit "C'est pratique car même si on ne parle pas japonais, on peut pointer ce qu'on veut manger". Ce que l'australien a capturé dans le viseur, c'est un stationnement pour vé-los. Il a été très impressionné de les voir garés en ordre - une chose qu'il n'a jamais vu ailleurs qu'au Japon. Finalement, le Japonais a pris la photo du torii (portail shinto) qui se situait au fond de la petite ruelle. On dirait que le Japonais avait une image plus stéréotypée du Japon que celle des étrangers et qu'il ne s'est pas rendu compte de la beauté innée dans laquelle il vit quotidiennement. J’ai trouvé cela bien intéressant.Ces temps-ci, à la télévision japonaise, on entend souvent les com-mentateurs s'exclamer à n'en plus finir "À travers le monde, le Japon est réputé pour être ...", "Le Japon est vu comme ... par le monde en-tier", etc. Il n'est pas mauvais de connaître d'autres points de vue que ceux des japonais, mais pour ce qui a trait à la perception du Japon dans le monde, il faut tenter de maintenir une perception balançée. il serait dommage de considérer seulement les éloges d'autrui et en dériver un faux sentiment de sécurité.

“Japanese-ness” through the viewfinder I met an old friend living in Tokyo by the bronze Hachikō statue at the entrance gate of JR shibuya station.It was my first time meeting someone at such an extremely popu-lar meeting spot in Japan. it was so exciting and new, i felt just like someone from the countryside visiting the big city for the first time. as observed the area while i waited for my friend to arrive, i witnessed an interesting contrast between the many Japanese, who were walking while staring at their mobile phones, and the many fascinated foreign tourists wandering about with their cam-eras. after all, the pedestrian scramble at this shibuya crosswalk is one of the most famous sights for foreign tourists: you know, that famous image of so many people crossing at the same time from all quarters; it’s so amazing, almost like the mass calisthenics performed in certain countries.an interesting experiment was recently broadcast on Japanese tv which took place at the front of JR tokyo Yamanote line in tabata station; a place known to be away from the usual sightseeing areas. Its first three participants, “Mr. A” (a Bangladeshi man), “Ms. B” (from Turkey), and “Mr. C” (Australian), had recently arrived in Japan. The final participant, “Mr. D”, was a Japanese native of tokyo. they were each given a camera and asked to capture a picture that most represented “Japanese-ness” to them.

mr. a ended up taking a picture of the tohoku shinkansen (Bullet train) which was going by on an elevated railroad. He said that, in his country, one could not take for granted such wonderfully fast and consistent service. ms. B took photos of the lifelike food samples that were in a restaurant’s show window: "They’re so con-venient because to order we can just point at what we want, even if we don’t know what it’s called", she said. Mr. C in turn captured a scene from his viewfinder of a bicycle parking lot. He found it so interesting how the Japanese could park their bicycles in such an organized way. as for mr. D, the tokyo native, he took a photo of a traditional shinto shrine gate in a hidden alleyway. somehow, the experiment revealed, Japanese people maintain a more stereotyp-ical or romanticized view of their own country. it was interesting to discover how it took a foreign perspective to find “Japanese-ness” in more modern or mundane things. these days, outside perspectives of Japan are frequently explored by Japanese variety shows. Topics such as “Japan is the only place in the world where –“, or “What does the world think about this Japanese product or place?“, are becoming increasingly popular on tv. these sorts of shows offer a chance for Japan to entertain new notions of “Japanese-ness”. On one hand, this can disappoint those who only expected a reinforcement of their long-held ideas. On the other hand however, talking with foreign-ers in order to see Japan through their eyes can bring new, fresh perspectives to the table; perspectives from which Japan can learn a lot about itself.

Japan has a wonderful opportunity to rediscover “‘Japanese-ness”, by recognizing how Japan is seen by non-Japanese. it would be disappointing if we were to listen only to the voices which rein-force our long-held ideas. new perspectives can be valuable and we should listen with an open mind.

「カナダにおける子供の日本語教育を考える～北国でパパイアは育つか？」と題するセミナーが、５月にトロント日系文化会館（JCCC）で開かれた。講師はトロント大学エスニックスタディーズ研究科事務局長、嘉納もも・ポドルスキーさん。セミナーには予想を上回る多数の人が参加、大盛況であった。

「北国でパパイアは育つか？」内容・要旨寒い所でパパイアを育てるのは至難の技、工夫も時間も必要となる。おまけに結果の保証はない。同じように、カナダで親が子供に日本語を話してほしいと願うのは当然だが至難である。そこで、子供にとっても家族にとっても良い結果をもたらすその方法を模索してほしい。

親の意思で、子供は生まれる前あるいは生後ほどなく移住が行われる。移民の子供の社会化と社会化の仕組みを理解することがヒントとなる。文化・言語を習得・保持するには「必要性」と「環境」が重要だが、これらが揃っていなくても「本人のやる気」があれば、可能となる。

日本語の勉強をめぐって親子げんかが絶えない家庭の話を聞くことがある。例えば、毎週土曜日、母親が子供に日本語学校に行かせようとすると、子供は「アイスホッケーをやりたいのに・・・」と不満を言う。「お母さん＝日本語」「日本語＝嫌い」となってお母さんが嫌いになることもある。日本語を話すことに親が固執して子供に不安や疑問を抱かせる。日本語学習をめぐって両親が険悪なムードになることもある。また、国際結婚の場合はもっと深刻である。日本語を勉強するかしないかは、父母のどちらかを「立てる」ことにつながるからだ。

子供にやる気を起こさせるには、いくつか方法がある。マイノリティー（少数民族）文化が主流文化として共有されている場を子供に体験させること。また、マイノリティー文化や言語の習得を親との「絆（きずな）」として印象づけること。そして親が率先して二つの文化、二つの言語を操る手本を見せることが大切である。

やる気を起こさせる特効薬として、子供に日本での暮らしを体験させるという方法がある。長期間は無理としても、夏休みか春休みなどの短期間に日本の学校に体験入学する方法もよいだろう。または、カナダで日本語学校・日系文化会館など他の家族と共有できる場所に行かせてみるのもよい。子供がやる気を持続させるには、あまり精魂詰めないで、場合によっては中断するこ

とも必要。それが後になってやる気の「復活」につながるからだ。

最後に、「北国でパパイアは育つか？」の答えは「育つ」だ。しかし、元の環境で育ったものとは見た目、中身が違うことを覚悟する必要がある。日本語の習得をアイデンティティー形成の一部としてとらえると、取り組み方も変わるだろう。

La conférencière fut Dr Momo Kanō Podolsky, directrice de programme au départe-ment ethnic, immigration, and Pluralism studies de l'Université de toronto. Cette conférence fut un grand succès, attirant plus de personnes que prévu.

Cultiver des papayes dans une région froide néces-site des techniques laborieuses, de l'ingéniosité et du temps. et les résultats ne sont pas garantis. De la même façon, bien que ce soit naturel que certains parents japonais vivant au Canada souhaitent que leurs enfants parlent japonais, c'est un objectif très difficile à atteindre. Autant les enfants que les parents s'évertuent à trouver les moyens pour faire « pousser

des papayes ».

les parents qui émigrent vers un nouveau pays le fer-ont soit avant ou peu après la naissance des enfants. Pour prendre la bonne décision, il est bon de connaî-tre comment les enfants immigrés peuvent socialiser dans un nouveau pays et quels sont les structures d'intégration. Le milieu et la nécessité pèsent lourd dans l'apprentissage d'une langue, mais même sans que ces deux facteurs soient nécessairement réunis, si l'enfant est motivé, il sera capable d'apprendre une nouvelle langue.On entend parler de ces familles qui ne parviennent pas à faire cesser les disputes à propos de l'étude du japonais. Prenons par exemple le cas typique de l'école du samedi: au moment où la mère dit à son enfant de prendre ses affaires pour aller à son cours, il manifeste sa déception: « Mais je veux aller patiner, moi... ». De plus, il fait l'association entre sa mère et le japonais, et puisqu'il hait le japonais, il com-mence à détester sa mère. Le parent qui insiste sur le japonais suscite de l'anxiété et de l'insécurité chez l'enfant, et l'ambiance à la maison devient orageuse. Particulièrement chez les couples mixtes, cette situa-tion devient plus grave, parce qu'on se demandera si l'enfant doit apprendre le japonais ou non et celui-ci s'attachera plus à un des deux parents.

Pour engendrer l'enthousiasme chez l'enfant, il y a des moyens. Amenez-le dans des lieux où il peut

vivre sa culture minoritaire conjointement avec la cul-ture du pays d'accueil ou créez l'impression que, en apprenant sa langue et sa culture minoritaire, son lien avec vous est plus fort. aussi, il est important pour votre enfant d'être un modèle, ayant pris l'initiative de bien intégrer les deux cultures et les deux langues.

Parmi les « remèdes » pour susciter de la motivation, il y a la possibilité d'envoyer l'enfant faire l'expérience du Japon... au Japon. Bien sûr, une période pro-longée n'est pas nécessaire, mais pour une période de deux ou trois mois, durant les vacances d'été ou de printemps, en l'inscrivant à une école japonaise. il y a aussi la possibilité de l'envoyer dans une région où il y a une école de japonais ou un Centre culturel des Canadiens-Japonais et où vous pourriez établir un lien avec une famille japonaise proche d'une telle institution. Pour que l'enthousiasme ne se tarisse pas, ne forcez pas trop votre enfant et, selon les circonstances, laissez-le prendre des vacances du japonais. en agissant ainsi, vous verrez une véritable « renaissance » dans sa motivation.

Finalement, peut-on faire pousser des papayes dans les pays nordiques? Oui! Il est nécessaire toutefois d'être prêt à être perçu différemment par ceux qui ont issus de la culture locale. les moyens pour aborder l'apprentissage du japonais changent lorsqu'on con-sidère que cette étude constitue une part de la forma-tion de notre identité.

A seminar entitled “Japanese Language Education for Children in Canada: Papayas Grow in northern Countries?” was held at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre in toronto this may. the speaker was momo Kano Podolsky, the Program administra-tor and Research Officer of Ethnic Studies at the University of toronto. there were more participants than expected, and the seminar was a huge suc-cess. Content and Summary of ”Papayas Grow in North-ern Countries?”

Growing papayas in cold places is no easy feat and requires ingenuity and time. On top of that, there is no guarantee of the desired result. in the same way, it is natural for Japanese parents raising their chil-dren in Canada to wish that their children will speak Japanese, but it is not that easy. this seminar gives

both parents and children the opportunity to achieve their learning goals. a parent might decide to immigrate to another country before their children are born or soon after their birth. But the key to success in a new country is when parents make the effort to understand how immigrant children are socialized. Although “need” and “circumstance” are important aspects of learn-ing about or maintaining a culture and language, it is also possible to be successful if there is “enthusi-asm of the individual.”We hear about families that argue over whether or not their children should study Japanese. For example, when parents try to persuade their children to go to a Japanese language school, the children complain and say “I want to play hockey.” they may end up resenting their mother because “mother=Japanese language” and then “Japanese

language=hate.” Because parents persist in speak-ing Japanese, children are frustrated and have many questions. enforcing the Japanese language at home can create a strained relationship between parents. in the case of an international marriage, it could be more serious because the choice to study Japanese (or not) may lead to “choosing a side” between mother and father. But there are ways to motivate kids! Let your chil-dren experience a place where a minority culture is viewed as a mainstream culture. also, give them the impression that learning the culture and language is a “bonding” activity between you and them. And it is important that parents act as role models and take the initiative to teach their children two cultures and two languages. as a panacea to help children get motivated, there

is also the opportunity to live in Japan. although impossible for a long period, it would be good to at-tend trial classes for a short time, like over summer vacation or spring break. another idea is to let them go to a Japanese language school or Japanese cultural centre where your family has something in common with other families. to keep them motivated, it may be necessary to take a break; sometimes it is better not to dedicate too much time and effort. A short break will lead to a “revival” of their motivation. And so, the answer to “Papayas Grow in Northern Countries?” is “yes.” But we need to be prepared for a different look (both inside and out) from the ones that grew in their original circumstances. if we con-sider learning Japanese as part of creating one’s identity, then the approach to learning the language can also change.

在外公館長表彰6月21日，モントリオール市立植物園で行われた「モザイカルチャー世界博」 オープニング・セレモニーにて，新井辰夫在モントリオール日本国総領事から，フレデリック・バック氏に対し，在外公館長表彰を行った。フレデリック・バック氏は，世界的にも著名なアニメーション作家であり，日本のアニメを代表する作家たちとの交流を通じて，日本とカナダの友好親善に大きな功績を残した。当地における日本アニメ普及に尽力しているほか，バック氏自身の作品も日本で大変高く評価されている。2009年に浜松市で行われた「モザイカルチャー世界博」では，バック氏の映像作品「木を植えた男」をモチーフとした立体造園が，最優秀にあたる「最高栄誉賞」を受賞した。また，今回モントリオールで開催中の「モザイカルチャー世界博」においても再び「木を植えた男」のモチーフが展示されている。

Tatsuo Arai, Consul Général du Japon à Montréal, a présenté un Certificat de mérite à m. Frédéric Back lors de la cérémonie d’ouverture de mosaïcultures internationales mon-tréal 2013 qui a eu lieu au Jardin botanique de Montréal. Artiste et réalisateur de film d’animation de renommée mondiale, m. Frédéric Back a contribué à une meilleure compréhension mutuelle entre le Japon et le Canada à travers ses échanges avec des artistes d’animation japonais émi-nents. il a été reconnu pour ses efforts favorisant la promotion de l’animation japonaise au Can-ada et pour l’ensemble de son magnifique œuvre qui est hautement reconnue au Japon. To MAkE A JAPAnESE RiGiD FAn, UCHiwAUchiwa, a Japanese figid fan is made of paper on a bamboo frame, they are popu-lar in summer time. In the work shop, first, write two Chinese characters by a brush. Then cut the one of characters you prefer and stick to the Uchiwa. Then finally, stick a colored japanese paper for the nice accent. The workshop takes about 2 hour and half.

The live-action film adaptation of Keishu Ando’s manga. An extreme masochistic detective and an extreme sadistic queen have a son named Kyosuke Shikijo, he is filled with a sense of justice. By wearing women’s panties on his head he gains more power as a human being. When he appears, bad guys laugh at him, when he rescues someone, they run away from fear. This not often praised hero routinely goes after bad guys. The very popular actor, Shun Oguri, assisted with the screen-play.

Cette adaptation du manga de Keishu Ando raconte l’histoire de Kyosuke Shikijo, le fils d’un détective masochiste et d’une reine sadique. Architect Lucius (Hiroshi Abe) is a serious man who sees the importance in good-old Roman bath culture. He time travels to present day Japan. He meets an aspiring comic artist named Mami (Aya Ueto.) One day he meets a woman named Kaguya Hayashi (Aoi Miyazaki) and falls in love. Although he deals with words at work, he can’t find the words to express himself to Kaguya. Bad Film 2012 Dir.: Sion Sono

香港が中国に返還された1997年、東京・高円寺の中央線を中心に日本人自警団と外国人グループが繰り広げる抗争を描く。園子温監督が95年に丸1年をかけて撮影したものの未完成だった作品を2012年に完成させた。日本が直面する領土問題を彷彿させる展開もあり、リアル感も味わえる。

When Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997, there were conflicts around the Chuo Line in Koenji, Tokyo, between foreigners and Japanese vigilantes. Director Shion Sono filmed footage for a year in 95 yet never completed the film. He finally completed it in 2012. Some of the topics are reminiscent of Ja-pan’s current territorial issues, creating some realism in the film.

Lorsque Honk Kong fut rendue à la Chine en 1997, il y eut des conflits entre les étrangers et Japonais près de la ligne Chuo dans Koenji à Tokyo. Le réalisateur Shion Sono a filmé pendant une année en 1995 mais n’a complété son film qu’en 2012. Certains sujets s’apparentent aux conflits territoriaux actuels du Japon, conférant un aspect réaliste au film.

In the Meiji era a legendary assassin “Hitokiri Battosai” Himura Kenshin (Takeru Sato) decides to stop harming people. He carries a katana sword which can’t hurt people and roams the streets. The film’s heroine, Kamiya Kaoru, is played by Emi Takei. Directed by Keishi Otomo of NHK drama series “Ryomaden.”

À l’époque Meiji, un assassin légendaire « Hitokiri Battosai » nommé Himura Kenshin (Takeru Sato) décide de ne plus s’attaquer aux gens. 1980年代に団地で生まれたごく普通の少年・悟（濱田岳）は、小学校卒業とともに「団地から一歩も出ずに生きる」と決める。中学校には通わず、団地内のパトロールを日課にし、やがて団地内のケーキ屋に就職。同級生と婚約して人生をそれなりに謳歌していた。しかし、時代の変遷とともに多くの人が団地を去り、悟は1人取り残されていく。監督は「ゴールデンスランバー」の中村義洋。

Satoru is an ordinary boy who was born in an apartment complex in the 80s. After graduating from elementary school, he decides to “live everyday life without stepping out of the apartment building.” He doesn’t go to Junior High, he spends his days patrolling the complex where he soon gets a job at a bakery. He is engaged with a classmate and enjoys his limited lifestyle. However, as time goes by and people start leaving the apartment complex, Satoru is left behind. Directed by Golden Slumber’s Yoshihiro Nakamura.

Satoru est un garçon ordinaire né dans un complexe d’appartements dans les années 80. Après l’école élémentaire, il décide de vivre sa vie sans sortir du complexe. Hiro Arikawa’s popular novel “Library Wars” is adapted to a live-action film. 30 years has passed since the government passed the “Media Betterment Act.” During high school, Iku Kasahara found refuge in the school library. She joins the library base and receives strict training from the instructor, Atsushi Dojo, and is recruited to the Library Task Force as the first female officer. Dojo is the complete opposite of the officer who saved her in the past for whom she had feelings, yet she can’t deny her feel-ings towards Dojo. Directed by GANTZ’s Shinsuke Sato.

Hitoshi (Kazuya Kamenashi) has some complaints but he goes on with his boring everyday life. Through the course of events he ends up performing a scam of “It’s me”. Since then, unknown multiple “Me” start to grow. These “Me” try deleting each other. The lead actor Kamenashi plays more than 20 characters in this film. Directed by Instant Swamp’s Satoshi Miki.

Hitoshi Nagano (Kazuya Kamenashi), qui travaille dans un ma-gasin d'électronique, ramasse un téléphone portable laissé par un client. Il appelle la mère de ce client et prétend être son fils. カナダでは休暇が比較的取りやすい。それを利用して帰国したり、海外旅行したりと、バケーションを満喫する人も多いだろう。今回は、長年モントリオールに住んでいる私にとって、なんと初めてのニューヨークへの旅。色々手配をしていく中で、知っていると便利な情報を見つけたので紹介したい。

旅の日程が決まったら、しておきたいこと４つ！

１、航空券や列車の手配モントリオールからニューヨークに行くには、バス、列車、飛行機、車と行き方は様々。車だと約6-7時間くらいで着くので便利だが、ニューヨーク市内を運転できるか不安だ。そんな時は、車で一番近くの米国バーリントン空港に行くのもおすすめ。そこからニューヨークまでの航空券が$100以下で購入できる場合もある。バスやアムトラックでもバーリントンに行けるが、フライトの時間とスケジュールが上手く合わないのが問題だ。

時間はかかるがお手頃価格で快適なのがアムトラック。ネットも使え、電源も確保できる。約10時間の列車の旅も、ネットしたり、本を読んだり、昼寝したりしている間に時間が過ぎる。遠足気分でおやつやランチなど持参するとより快適。早めに予約すると価格も片道$65とお手頃。◉ アムトラック：http://tickets.amtrak.com/◉ バス：www.greyhound.com

２、宿泊先の手配日本人経営のB＆Bやゲストハウスなど、綺麗で快適なところを探していたけれど、空きがないなんてことも多い。レビューや予約状況を調べたりしていると、ため息が出てきてしまう。

今回は、格安ホテル予約ができると人気の逆オークション型サイトpricelineを試してみることにした。日程、エリア、ホテルのランク、予算（落札希望価格）を決めたら、後はサイトが条件に合ったホテルを探してくれる。ただし、一度希望価格を入力しそれにあったホテルが見つかるとキャンセルはできない。ホテル情報も購入後までわからないので、賭けのようなものである。ただ、ランクを決められるので、４つ星や5つ星ホテルが格安で予約できたりすることもある。こつは落札価格を低め設定すること。かなり格安のホテルが見つかるかもしれない。◉ priceline: www.priceline.com/

３、ビザとパスポートの確認日本国籍の人が、米国に観光目的・ビザ無しで滞在する場合、「エスタ」（Electronic System for Travel Authorization：ESTA）で渡航認証を受ける必要がある。申請時、一人当たり$14の支払いが必要となり、クレジットカードで支払いが出来る。オンラインで登録し、渡航認証を印刷して持参しよう。◉ ESTA: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

La partie avant le voyage. au Canada, il est relativement facile de prendre des vacances. alors il y a beaucoup de person-nes qui en profitent pour rentrer dans leur pays ou voyager dans des pays étrangers. Cette fois j’ai planifié un voyage à New York. C’est la première fois que je vais à n.Y. même si j'habite montréal depuis de nombreuses années. voici plusieurs informations utiles à connaitre que j’ai trouvé en préparant mon voyage. Les quatre choses qu'Il faut faire après avoir Dé-terminé les dates du voyage. 1. Achat des billets d’avion et de trainPour aller à new York à partir de montréal, dif-férentes possibilités de moyens de transport s'offre à vous tel que l'autobus, le train, l’avion ou la voiture. s'il est plutôt pratique d'y aller en voi-ture, le trajet prend 6 ou 7 heure, il faut que vous soyez à l’aise pour conduire à n.Y. si ce n'est pas le cas, je vous recommande d’aller à l'aéroport de Burlington dans l'État du vermont, le plus proche en voiture de montréal. Dans certains cas, on peut y acheter un billet aller simple jusqu'à new York pour 100$. vous pouvez aller à Burlington avec d’autres moyens que la voiture, mais les ho-raires des avions, des autobus et des trains ne sont pas très coordonnés.

malgré la longueur du voyage, le train est confort-able et le prix est abordable. Il dispose d'un accès sans-fil gratuit à l’internet et est équipé de prise de courant permettant de recharger les piles de son portables. malgré la longueur du voyage, (en-viron 10 heures en train, le temps passe vite avec l’internet, avec des livres ou en faisant la sieste. 2. Réservation de l’hébergementJ’étais à la recherche d'auberges et de B & B sous gestion japonaise. Ces endroits sont propres et confortables, mais il faut réserver tôt parce que ces endroits sont populaires et les places sont restreintes. Cette fois-ci, j’ai décidé d'essayer un site de type d'enchères inversées Priceline qui est populaire car on peut aussi réserver un hôtel sur ce site. Une fois que vous avez décidé des dates, de la région, du niveau de l’hôtel, du budget (le prix d’adjudication), le site fait une recherche de un hôtel qui est conforme à vos conditions. Cepend-ant, une fois que vous enregistrez le prix désiré, si le site trouve un hôtel vous ne pouvez plus an-nuler la transaction. On ne peut pas connaître les informations de l’hôtel jusqu’après avoir acheté, alors c'est comme un pari. Cependant, puisque vous déterminé le type d'hôtel, parfois on peut réserver un hôtel de 4 ou 5 étoiles à un prix plutôt raisonnable. l'astuce est de commencer les enchère à un prix très bas et de l'augmenter peu à peu.◉ priceline: www.priceline.com/

3. Confirmation de passeport et de visasi les personnes de nationalité japonaise reste sans visa comme touriste en etats-Unis, il est nécessaire de recevoir une autorisation de voyage en "Esta": (Système électronique d'autorisation de voyage esta). vous pouvez vous inscrire en ligne, après l’inscription, il faut apporter l'autorisation de voyage imprimé. en outre, au moment du demande, le paiement de 14$ par personne est exigé. vous pouvez payer par carte de crédit.◉ ESTA: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ 4. Confirmation de l'assurance voyage Parfois, la carte de crédit couvre l'assurance voy-age. Dans ces cas, vérifier avec votre fournisseur de service de carte de crédit l'étendu et la durée de la couverture d'assurance fourni par celle-çi. si vous n'êtes pas couvert, vous pouvez acheter l'assurance voyage juste au cas où. let's go to new York City! Things You Should Do Before Your tripin Canada, it's relatively easy to take vacations. many people enjoy their time off by going back to their home countries or taking trips overseas. This time, I went to New York City for the first time (even though i've lived in montreal for years). Below, i will provide you with some useful information that i found when preparing for my trip.

Four things you should do once you set the date of your trip:

1. Book your air or train ticket.there are many ways to go to new York from montreal; for example, by bus, train, airplane, or car. in my opinion, it's convenient to go by car. You can get there in about 6 - 7 hours. But you might wonder if you can actually drive in new York city. if this concerns you, i recom-mend going up to Burlington airport, montreal’s nearest airport to the Us. the cost of a plane ticket from Burlington airport is sometimes less than $100. While it is possible to get there other ways than by car, the flight schedules don't really synchronize with the bus or train schedules.

another way to go is via amtrak. it takes time but the fare is reasonable and the ride is comfortable. You can use the internet while you ride and they provide you with outlets for your computer. even though it takes around ten hours, it passes quickly if you use the internet, read books, or take a nap. it's even more delightful if you bring snacks and lunch--just like a school excursion! 2. Book your accommodations.i was searching for clean and comfortable places, like B&Bs or guest houses run by a Japanese owner, but they were often full. While i was checking reviews and availabilities, i couldn't help but sigh.

so this time, i tried the popular reverse auction site “priceline” that you can use to reserve low-cost hotels. You decide the dates, the hotel rank, and the budget (bidding price), and then the site finds you hotels that match your needs. One thing to note: Once you choose a bidding price, you are committed; you cannot cancel after a hotel has been selected for you. and you also can't view any information about the hotel until you actually pay for it. so it's like gambling. But because you get to choose the hotel ranking, you can book a four-star or five-star hotel at a reasonable price. the trick is to keep the bidding price low. You might be able to find a really reasonably priced hotel. ◉ Priceline: http://www.priceline.com/

3. Check your visa and passport.When Japanese citizens go to the Us to go sightseeing without a visa, they need to get authorized with “ESTA” (Electronic System for travel authorization). You apply for it online, make sure to print the authorization document, and bring it with you. When you apply, you need to pay $14 per person. 4. Eat watermelon to hydrate.1. Did you know that watermelon is the national symbol of summer in Japan? not only is it pretty, pink, and delicious, it is made up of nearly 90 % water, so it will keep you hydrated and refreshed during the hot summer months.

Wear loose-fitting, comfortable 2. clothing. Wearing tight clothes in the heat means your body has no room to breathe, no space to sweat, and no chance to keep dry. loose clothing is not only cooler and more comfortable, it also helps prevent irritations to the skin.

go to the hot springs… but jump 3. in the cold pools. this is for the young at heart. literally. switching from hot to cold pools can be a great way for the young and the healthy to cool off. eat 5. somen to stay cool. a thin wheat noodle that is chilled with ice after cooking, somen is the perfect lunch for those who don’t feel hungry on hot days. Dip it in a soya-based sauce mixed with wasabi, ginger, green onions, or what-ever suits your mood… and slurp away!

next time you’re feeling the heat in Japan, consider what you wear, what you eat, and where you spend your days. there are ways to feel cool when it’s HOt outside, but remember to be ‘sun smart.’ Spending too much time in the sun could result in sunburn, dehydra-tion, or even heat stroke. if you’ve been burned by a Japanese summer and need to see a doctor, remem-ber that travel insurance typically only covers an illness or injury that requires immediate medical attention. Canada Day is July 1st of every year. it’s the day that all Canadians enjoy relaxation while spending time with family & friends.

the americans separated from British rule in 1776, and celebrate independence Day on July 4th. Canada waited nearly 100 years later, until 1868, to create the “Dominion of Canada.” Independence Day celebrates the rejection of British rule and the United states becoming an au-tonomous country. the basis of Canada’s celebration is founded on the formation of a new country and the union of provinces.

the holiday became a statute in 1879 but was initially called Dominion Day. there are not any records of early celebrations of Canada (Dominion) Day. in 1927 the celebration coincided with the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation. the Governor General laid the cornerstone of the Confederation Building on Wellington street and the Carillon in the Peace tower was inaugu-rated.

Only since the late 1950′s has Canada had regular observ-ance ceremonies of Canada Day.

in 1968, Canada added multi-cultural and professional concerts on Parliament Hill. the festivities were televised and ran under the name Festival Canada until 1979.

in 1980, the government extended celebrations beyond the Ottawa region by sponsoring the development of festivities on a local level. In 1981, 15 major cities offered fireworks to commemorate the day.

It wasn’t until 1982 that Dominion Day was officially changed to Canada Day.
