August 31, 2014 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Silent Prayer Here I am again, Lord, wandering amidst your world,

looking for you. Rise up in my heart again. Show me your way and your truth and the life.

Walk with me and open my eyes. Amen.

Hymn Sing

Centering Music - “Thou Art Worthy” STF# 2041 Thou art worthy, thou art worthy, thou art worthy O Lord,

to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power.

For thou has created, hast all things created;

thou hast created all things.

And for thy pleasure they are created; thou art worthy, O Lord.

(*Please stand for items marked with an asterisk. GTG is the purple “Glory to

God” hymnal. STF is the “Sing the Faith” smaller blue hymnal)

Call to Worship

Leader: We are here.

All: In this place where we experience God’s love, in this

place where we practice loving each other.

Leader: We are here.

All: Some of us have returned from a distant country. Some

of us have snapped out of our preoccupations.

Leader: At least for now we are here.

All: We are home.

*Hymn - “There’s a Wildness in God’s Mercy” GTG #435

*Prayer of Confession

ALL: Merciful God, we confess that we have strayed from your

ways. Like the Prodigal Son, we have wasted our inheritance.

You gave us the earth for our home, but we squander earth’s

resources and hoard its bounty. You gave us neighbors to

love, but we pursue selfish ambitions. You gave us the

commandments that lead to human flourishing, but we break

your law and forsake your love. Forgive us our sin and bring

us to repentance. Draw our wandering hearts back to you

that we may find freedom in obedience to your love. Through

Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

Feasting on the Word – Worship Companion,

edited by Kimberly Bracken Long

Silence is kept

*Musical response - “You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy” GTG #437

You are the Lord, giver of mercy!

You are the Christ, giver of mercy!

You are the Lord, giver of mercy!

*Sharing of the Peace

Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.

People: And also with you.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Children’s Sermon

(All children are to remain in service.)

Musical Offering - “ God is Good All the Time” Peggy & Keith Haines

by Don Moen and Paul Overstreet

Psalm 23 (unison)

ALL: The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes

me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still

waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths

for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear

no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff—

they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my

enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup

overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of

the Lord my whole life long.

*Hymn - “Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound” GTG #649 Gospel Lesson: Luke 15:1̀1-32 (p.953)

Sermon: “Family Legacies “

The Rev. Wanda Sevey

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Affirmation of Faith *Apostles’ Creed (unison)

All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offering

“ O God, it is so simple to give money, even when we have little to share. But it’s difficult to put ourselves in the offering plate.

That seems to be giving too much. Is that what you’re really asking for? Is it the only way we can ever claim our true selves and find the

fulfillment you intended for us? Please answer us, God! Amen.” Musical Meditation

*Doxology #606 “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.”

*Prayer of Dedication

Prayers of the People Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Leader: Let us pray. Prayers of Praise, Thanksgiving, and Intercession. All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. GO IN GOD’S NAME

*Hymn: “To God Be the Glory“ GTG# 634

*Benediction

* Organ Response
