ASSEMBLING IN GOD’S NAME

Theme for the Day

“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful

than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love

is stronger than death.” Robert Fulghum

Call to Worship Leader: The word has come for us from God: People: who promises to shelter us under the wings of hope and grace. Leader: The word has come to us from Jesus: People: who encourages us to remember the good news we have received. Leader: The word flows to us from the Spirit: People: who reminds us to place our hope and trust in God. Leader: With prayer and praise, in scripture and in song, together let us worship the Living God! *Hymn - “” GTG# tune - Call to Confession Leader: In God's presence, our lives are exposed, our words are shown for their hollowness, our need is revealed. Let us confess who we are, as we ask God to embrace us with grace and hope. Please join me as we pray: Prayer of Confession (unison) All: We need to confess, God of Abraham and Lazarus, how often we are not content with the simple gifts and lives you offer. Tempted by everything, we can become insensitive to those who have nothing. Encouraged by the world to accumulate more, we may miss the chance to gather your goodness and godliness. Chasing after all which has no value, we may not have the energy to pursue the faith, the love, the gentleness you have for us. Forgive us, God of Reversals. You have sent the One who speaks the words we need to listen to in order to have life. Help us to remember how you have redeemed us, and in remembering, may we make that good confession that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, now and forever. (time for silent meditation and confession)

*Words of Assurance Leader: This is the good news that comes from God: I will hear your prayers, I will answer with hope and peace, I will deliver you from your sins. People: God has covered us with grace; under God's hope we will find shelter. Thanks be to God. Amen. *Congregational Response “Glory Be to the Father” GTG #581 Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen. *Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

Children’s Call & Message - “Come All Ye Children” All children are invited to come play drums during the song Prayer of Illumination Leader: Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. The Psalter

Psalm 91

You who dwell in the shelter of the Most High, abide under the shad-ow of the Almighty. You shall say to the Lord, "You are my refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I put my trust." God shall deliver you from the snare of the hunter and from the deadly pestilence. God's pinions will cover you, and you shall find refuge under the wings of the Lord, whose faithfulness shall be a shield and buckler. R You shall not be afraid of any terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; Of the plague that stalks in the darkness, nor of the sick-ness that lays waste at mid-day. A thousand shall fall at your side and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Your eyes have only to behold to see the reward of the wicked. R Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your habitation, there shall no evil happen to you, You shall tread upon the lion and adder; neither shall any plague come near your dwelling. R For God shall give the holy angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. They shall bear you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and adder; you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet. R Because they are bound to me in love, therefore will I deliver them; I will protect them, because they know my name. They shall call upon me, and I will answer them; I am with them in trouble; I will rescue them and bring them to honor. With long life will I satisfy them, and show them my salvation. R All: O God, to know you is to live, to serve you is to reign. Defend us from every enemy, that, trusting in your protective care, we may have no fear; through the power of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S WORD

Hymn - “” GTG # tune - Statement of Faith - PCUSA Brief Statement of Faith In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, Fully human, fully God. Jesus pro claimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the broken- hearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Minute for Mission Prayers of the People Leader: We pray to you, O God: People: Hear our Prayer

THE EUCHARIST (Gratitude) OF GOD’S PEOPLE

Call to Stewardship Leader: May our gifts this day go to serve those who need healing, those who are hungry, those who need a friend or community, and those who are on the other side of that chasm we call indifference. We may not always notice them, but you do, and so we pray that they might be touched by your grace and hope. Do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Offertory *Doxology - “Praise God, from Whom All Blessing Flow” GTG #606 Praise God, from whom all blessing flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost Amen. Prayer of Thanksgiving Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. (continued on next page)

Prayer of Thanksgiving (continued) Leader: Eternal God, creator of the world and giver of all good, we thank you for the earth, our home, and for the gift of life. We praise you for your love in Jesus Christ, who came to heal this broken world, who died rejected on the cross and rose triumphant from the dead. Because he lives, we live to praise you, our God forever. People: Gracious God, who called us from death to life, we give ourselves to you; and with the church through all ages we thank you for your saving love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Leader: Now let us pray for God's rule on earth as Jesus taught us: Lord’s Prayer All: Our Father, who art in heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Peace & Global Witness Offering The Peace & Global Witness Offering encourages the church to em-brace our reconciling God’s mission with those around the corner and around the world, to be active peacemakers – at all times in all ways. Your gift enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of conflict and injustice across the world. Special envelopes are in the pew racks and in the narthex. Please consider filling an envelope and placing it in the offering plate. How will your gift be used? Our congregation retains 25% to support programs working for Christ's peace. Another 25% goes to our Presbytery and Synod ministries of peace and reconciliation and the remaining 50% is used by the PCUSA Mission Agency to advo-cate for peace and justice. The offering will be dedicated during our worship service on World Communion Sunday, Oct. 6th.
