COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
February 23, 2014 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
Silent Prayer
“You are the Lord, Giver of wisdom, so exalted in glory, we lower our eyes,
yet you move into our hearts in order to renovate our lives;
so perfect in wonder, we tiptoe away, yet you stick with us until
we are all grown-up in faith. Be with us in this time of worship.”
Thom Shuman
Prelude
Welcome and Announcements
We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the
guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet.
Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys
Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in
the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on
the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from
the narthex to your loved one.
Centering Music - “God of Great and God of Small” GTG #19
Please join in singing the second verse.
(*Please stand for items marked with an asterisk.)
Call to Worship
Leader: We are called to turn the other cheek,
People: so we will seek to be vulnerable in our lives of faith
and service.
Leader: We are called to go the extra mile,
People: so we will walk with those around us in the journeys
of hope as well as fear.
Leader: We are called to love those who make that so hard,
People: so we will rely on the One who loves us to fill us with
that special grace.
*Hymn - “Let All Things Now Living” GTG #37
*Prayer of Confession
Leader: Would a mother not comfort her son who has made a
foolish mistake? Does a father not let go of his anger at
his daughter to embrace her in forgiveness? This is how
God is towards us, longing to dry our tears, to make us
whole. So let us come, confessing to the One who loves
us so much. Join me as we pray, saying,
ALL: We must admit that on most days, we are so busy
racing around that we do not notice the street signs for
the kingdom. Rather than lifting the fallen to their feet
and brushing them off, we belittle them as we walk on
past. When we could offer a cup of hope and joy to the
broken-hearted, we turn away so we do not have to see
the tears sliding down their faces.
Forgive us, God our Maker, and touch us with your
grace. Mend our hearts, so we might be more loving.
Fill the emptiness of our souls with the Word of life.
Turn our faces towards the need of the world, so we
might offer our lives to bring healing and hope, even
as our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, touches us with
these gifts.
*Assurance of Pardon
Leader: This is the good news: we belong to Christ. He is the
One who comes bringing life and hope to all.
People: Because we belong to Christ, we belong to God. The
Holy One is also the Merciful One, who fills our hearts
with love. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven! Amen.
*Congregational Response - “Great Are You, Lord” GTG #614
Great are you, Lord: you are holy and just;
by your power we trust in your love.
Great are you, Lord: you are faithful and true;
by your mercy you prove you are love.
Great are you, Lord, and worthy of glory!
Great are you, Lord, and worthy of praise.
Great are you, Lord. We lift up our voice; we lift up our voice:
Great are you, Lord! Great are you, Lord!
*Sharing of the Peace
Leader: The peace of Christ be with you.
People: And also with you.

Constitutional Questions
Do you trust in Jesus Christ your Savior, acknowledge him Lord of all
and Head of the Church, and through him believe in one God, Father,
Son, and Holy Spirit?
I do.
Do you accept the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be, by
the Holy Spirit, the unique and authoritative witness to Jesus Christ in
the Church universal, and God’s Word to you?
I do.
Do you sincerely receive and adopt the essential tenets of the
Reformed faith as expressed in the confessions of our church as
authentic and reliable expositions of what Scripture leads us to believe
and do, and will you be instructed and led by those confessions as you
lead the people of God?
I do and I will.
Will you fulfill your office in obedience to Jesus Christ, under the
authority of Scripture, and be continually guided by our confessions?
I will.
Will you be governed by our church’s polity, and will you abide by its
discipline? Will you be a friend among your colleagues in ministry,
working with them, subject to the ordering of God’s Word and Spirit?
I will.
Will you in your own life seek to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, love
your neighbors, and work for the reconciliation of the world?
I will.
Do you promise to further the peace, unity, and purity of the church?
I do.
Will you seek to serve the people with energy, intelligence,
imagination, and love?
I will.
Will you be a faithful deacon, teaching charity, urging concern, and
directing the people’s help to the friendless and those in need? In your
ministry will you try to show the love and justice of Jesus Christ?
I will.
An elder addresses members of the congregation:
Do we, the members of the church, accept Rich Herzog, and Jean Harle
as deacons, chosen by God through the voice of this congregation to
lead us in the way of Jesus Christ?
The people respond:
We do.
Do we agree to encourage them, to respect their decisions, and to
follow as they guide us, serving Jesus Christ who alone is head of the
Church?
We do.
(Children Pre-K through 5th Grade may leave for Sunday School.)

great love revealed in Jesus Christ.
A church that faithfully listens for God’s will for our
lives and our community
A community of God that is an open, inviting, caring
family of faith where all are embraced, accepted and
loved.

All we give we have first received from your hand, O God. It is
our privilege to be generous because we have been richly
blessed. May the opportunity to give turn us away from our
preoccupation with getting. As we seek to put first things first,
we aspire to participation in God’s realm above all else. Amen
