COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY

September 2, 2018 15th Sunday after Pentecost

ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME

Morning Reflection "Jesus invites people to follow him into that sort of life from which

behavior such as loving one’s enemies will seem like the only sensible and happy thing to do. For a person living that life,

the hard thing to do would be to hate the enemy, to turn the supplicant away, or to curse the curser… True Christlikeness,

true companionship with Christ, comes at the point where it is hard not to respond as he would.”

― Dallas Willard

Prelude - Hymn Sing - Using Hymnbook, 1955 Sing the first and last verses Hymns Sings are back for the summer! Each week, we will choose 2- 3 hymns to sing together. This week we sing from the Red Hymnal of '55, next week we will use the Blue Hymnal of '90. We are doing the singing during the Prelude, before announcements, so please come early to participate. Welcome and Announcements We welcome you in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ! Please sign the guest book in the narthex so we can send you a welcome packet or fill out a yellow welcome card located in the pews. The card can be placed in the offer-ing place. Gathering of Prayer Concerns and Joys Please raise your hand to share your joys or concerns to be included in the prayers of the people this day. You may also write your concern on the pink sheets and hand to the Pastor. Please mail a prayer card from the narthex to your loved one.

Call to Worship Leader: Here, our Beloved speaks to us; the voice of our Beloved sounds in our hearts: People: calling us to generous acts, to share the gifts we have been given. Leader: Now, our Beloved speaks to us; the voice of our Beloved sounds in our land: People: calling us to generous acts, to open our hearts to all in need. Leader: In every place, in every moment, our Beloved speaks to us; the voice of our Beloved sounds in all creation: People: calling us to generous acts, to stand with God's people: the least, the lost, the little, the last. Leader: With prayer and praise, in scripture and in song, together let us worship the Living God! *Hymn - “We Thank Thee, Lord” TH #294 tune - Field Prayer of Confession (unison) Holy One of leaders and little children, we hear your words every day, but rarely live them out. Our anger roars like a flooded creek, but our forgiveness drips like a rusty faucet. Our impetuous tongues rush to judgment, while our words of hope sound like a sluggish soundtrack. We listen with impatient ears to the cries of the poor. Father of Lights, may your mercy fall on us like a summer shower on parched grass; may your hope overflow our hearts; may your Beloved Child, Jesus Christ, speak to us and call us to life.

*Words of Assurance Leader: Listen and understand - the voice of the Beloved speaks to us, implanting the word of hope, the word of grace, and the word of forgiveness into our hearts. People: We listen and understand. Every gift comes from God, especially the gifts of mercy and love. Thanks be to God, we are forgiven. Amen. *Congregational Response - “Because I Knew Not When My Life Was Good” TH #274 Because I knew not when my life was good. And when there was a light upon my path. But turned my soul perversely to the dark, O Lord, I do repent. Amen *Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD Children’s Sermon (Children will remain in service this week.) Gospel Reading - Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 (page 917) Hymn - “A Charge to Keep I Have” TH #301 tune - Boylston Epistle Testament Reading - James 1:17-27 Sermon - “True Religion” Rev. Bob Higgs

The Lord’s Supper Invitation to the Table The Great Thanksgiving:

Leader: The Lord be with you People: And also with you Leader: Lift up your hearts People: We lift them up to the Lord Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: It is truly right and our greatest joy…

And join their unending hymn singing,

People: Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.

Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

Leader: Like your glory, may your holiness be eternal, God of wind and flames… (prayer continues.)

Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Thank you Rev. Bob Higgs Rev. Dr. Robert Higgs (please call him Bob) comes from Pittsburgh and remains an ardent Steelers fan. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1981, Bob joined the US Peace Corps, serving for three years in the southern African nation of Botswana, beginning a lifelong attachment to Africa. He taught junior high math and obtained a grant for an Apple computer for the students, the first such computer in the nation. His most recent call was to serve as Designated Pastor of the First Pres-byterian Church of Elizabeth, New Jersey (the oldest English-speaking congregation in our state). He helped lead a $9-million renovation pro-ject of the buildings and grounds, launched a Spanish-language minis-try, and grew the congregation. While discerning what God’s plan for him will be, he relocated in 2015 to Lumberton, NJ where he works with children with Behavioral issues in the Cherry Hill School District. He also drives for Uber and wrote a book about his experiences entitled “The Ubservations of a Pastor.” In 2004, Bob married Kelly Damon, who was born and raised in the Drexel Hill area of Philadelphia. She worked in human resources for several non-profit agencies in Philadelphia and is currently Executive Director of NJVOAD, an agency that links church, nonprofit, and gov-ernment agencies in each of the state’s 21 counties to organize for disas-ter situations. They have three adopted sons, Andy, 28, and Justin, 26, and Christian, 16. Andy lives in Atlantic City while Justin works with Americorps in Trenton. Chris is a sophomore at Rancocas Valley High
