As trade plays an important role in thedrive for national development, the govern-ment is now expediting border trade activi-ties to export domestic goods extensively. Inparticular, it is doing so through trade agree-ments and border trade agreements signedbetween Myanmar and the People’s Repub-lic of China.

Muse 105th Mile Trade Zone waslaunched in April 2006, and goods are nowexported and imported on a wider scalethrough the zone. The zone is the largest oneamong the border trade camps, and it ex-ports and imports goods most in Myanmar. It also serves as an economically strategiczone not only for Myanmar-China bordertrade but also for ASEAN countries and EastAsian countries.

Muse 105th Mile Trade Zone mostlyexports major goods such as green gram, rubber, fish, prawn, rice bean, cow pea, whitesesame, dried small fish, jelly fish, and greengram. Fish, eel and mango have a readymarket abroad, so it is required to makeefforts to export these items all the more.

Now, the government is rendering as-sistance to national entrepreneurs so thatthey can spread their wings in their busi-nesses. Respective chambers of commerceand entrepreneurs have to join hands fordevelopment of bilateral trade, putting bor-der trade on the trend of regular trade, andhelping the nation collect taxes correctly.

With a large market, Muse 105th MileTrade Zone has a rise in export and importof goods. It has achieved a prospect forprogress. So, departmental officials and en-trepreneurs have to work hand in hand toaccelerate the export of the goods with readymarket in accordance with the nation’s tradepolicy for development of regular trade de-velopment.

Putin denounces USplan for missile shieldLONDON, 24 May—

President Vladimir Putintravelled to the heart ofEurope yesterday todenounce the Bushadministration's plans todeploy a missile defenceshield in the region.

In his fourth anti-USsalvo in as many months, the Russian leader tookthe floor in Vienna’sHofburg Palace, formerseat of Austro-Hungarianemperors, to ask why theAmericans were threate-ning the peace of centralEurope by putting newradars and a silo of missiledefence rockets in theCzech Republic andPoland. “What is happen-ing in Europe that is sonegative that we need tofill eastern Europe withnew forms of weapons?”

he asked. “What hashappened that hasworsened the situation inEurope and demands suchactions? Nothing.”

The Russian leader’suncompromising oppo-sition to the Pentagon’splans to install elementsof its missile shield projectin central Europe followeda frosty summit last weekwith EU leaders, un-productive talks withCondoleezza Rice, the USsecretary of state, andBritain’s indictment onTuesday of an ex-KGBofficer, Andrei Lugovoy, for the London murder ofAlexander Litvinenko, aformer KGB agent andfierce critic of Mr Putin.

Relations betweenRussia and the west are attheir lowest ebb for 20

years, and senior Euro-pean and Nato officialsexpect no let-up in theconfrontational rhetoricfrom Moscow until MrPutin’s eight-year presi-dency comes to an endnext year and the powerstruggle for the successionis resolved.

While Mr Putin de-nounced the Americans inVienna, a principalcontender to succeed him,Sergei Ivanov, argued thatthe US radar stationplanned for the CzechRepublic would be able tospy deep into Russia.

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Friday, 25 May, 2007 7

During the previous March, I stayedat home, reading books and periodicals, listening to the radio and watching TVand movies. When I watched a moviehailing the Armed Forces Day, I wascaptivated by the main character “SgtYe Tint”. Then I came to rememberanother onscreen character “Po Si”: ofthe nation-wide popular film “Wai-le-hmwe Kywe-le-hmwe”. Both filmsportray the lives of soldiers.

I admire the artistes and techniciansfor their efforts to serve the nationalinterest with the power of art.

The nation is facing various kindsof perpetration to attack her from allangles and to break her up. The moviehonours the Tatmadawmensafeguarding the nation with might andmain. Persons like Ye Tint and Po Siare really required in the Armed Forces.

Each and every person should bedutiful at a time when nationaldevelopment and modernization driveis ongoing. All will have to discard theold way of thinking.

It is not the time to find fault withthe government, but the time to realizethe truth as it really is.

Concerning this, columnist NgarMin Swe presented in his article aprocess in which an entrepreneur couldautomatically serve the national interestwhile running his own business.

He also extended a cordial andpolite invitation to strange charactersof RFA, VOA and BBC.

He clearly explained how to benefitthe nation while doing business.

Everyone should avoid a smallermajority whose attempts to rock theboat place them out of the main stream.

As garment factories could not runanymore in the previous years, basicworkers were out of works and runninginto trouble.

It is not good that some (very few)are making demands for sanctions. Theycaused to bar tourists from visitingMyanmar, foreign investment fromstreaming into the nation and factoriesfrom running. The result is that only theordinary people not the governmentare facing difficulties and hardships.

I still remember an article in whichthe writer stated Nelson Mandela aslamenting that the root cause of theslow and less national developmentwas the years-long outside economicsanctions imposed against his country.

Members of the National Leaguefor Democracy who are demanding andadvocating sanctions, while committinginstigative acts inside the nation andthe persons under the name of “88”

generation students should take heed ofMandela’s words.

The assessment of Myanmar’scurrent political situation by a columnist,Chan Mya Thaw, in a journal is that it isjust the conflict between the NLD andthe government. He also stated that therewas no problem between the people andthe government; and that the NLDrepresents neither the people nor its ownmembers.

The nation was suffering severelyas the NLD that had never done anythinggood for the public was committingperpetration that harmed the publicinterest, the writer continued to say.

He also said that the nation wouldnot develop if NLDs and their cohortswere working under the orders of foreignembassies they were maintainingcontacts to receive advice and assistancewhile inviting sanctions and pressureson the government till they could grabpower in accord with their policy —please provide assistance only after wehave grabbed power.

The final remark of the writer is thatthe best thing to do is to leave the NLDoff the cause of the national politics.

How disheartening to know that theNLD objected to the Japan’s plan todonate over 400 primary schools toMyanmar. In consequence, rural areasmissed the opportunity to get fine schoolbuildings.

Is it politics?Myanmar is rich in natural resources.

So, had there been normal flow of foreignfunds, technology and investments toMyanmar, the nation would havedeveloped rapidly.

With the intention of helping theNLD and so-called “88” generationstudents come to power through shortcut and applying pressure on the nation,in September 2006 the US called forputting the Myanmar on the agenda ofthe UN Security Council under the titleof “Situation in Myanmar”.

On 11 September 2007, the US and

Britain submitted a draft of their proposalthrough which the UNSC would have totake action against Myanmar.

Nonetheless, the nations that lovejustice with correct policies firmly stoodby Myanmar, and turned down the draft. In addition, they said Myanmar’s internalaffairs did not pose any threat to regionaland international security.

Much to my disgust, certaincountries are rather aggressive toMyanmar.

Daw Suu Kyi said that thegovernment would have to make itschoice of either of the two ways—dialogue or utter devastation. She alsosaid that Yugoslavia came under airattacks stemming from its generals’refusal to hold a dialogue, so a largenumber of Yugoslavs would have to die.Her words were very abhorrent to me.

What she said meant she would haveto expend everything for her coming topower.

I do not want to see any personprepared to expend lives and property ofthe people for his or her coming topower.

She had a bad historical background.Without holding Bogyoke Aung San inhigh regard, without showing any regardto national people, and failing to preserveher own lineage, she had done as shepleased. Supposing she came to power,I darenot imagine what the nation’s futurewould be like.

Writer Wathan demanded that“Return to where you are from, AuntySuu”.

How disappointing it is that thelineage from Bo Min Yaung to BogyokeAung San that went down to the annalsof the nation’s history is now on theverge of extinction.

After the attempt to squeeze theUNSC to take action against Myanmarfailed to work, the destructive elementstried to use an alternative way;groundless accusations of religiousdiscrimination and human rights

violations.The expatriates, who are now

leading an easy life abroad, expressedan inciting word that starving people donot care about their possible deaths. The suggestion might be right in thetime of the colonialists or the MyanmarSocialist Programme Party.

It is no longer correct because nowis in the time of the Tatmadawgovernment. And there is no need toexpress such words.

It needs time and funds to help thenation rise from general deteriorationin 1988 to all-round development. Inthis regard, what is most important isspirit.

Surely, the nation will have aprosperous future if the entire nationparticipate in the nation-building tasks. The people are participating in thesetasks and enjoying the taste of peace.Peace is full of essence.

Everyone knows best that howmuch they have done for theirmotherland.

And each and every person(including politicians) has to fully servethe interests of their families, wards, towns, and the nation, so they have tomake a self-criticism.

I would like to urge all to findwhether they have fulfilled their duties, what they have done are right, and whatthey have done are beneficial to thepeople, and to make contributions tothe future.

Even if someone does not want todo so, he should not make criticismwith negative attitude, and he shouldtake part in the nation-building tasks.

One day, Myanmar will betransformed into a peaceful, modernand developed nation, as aspired by thepeople.

So, I would say Myanmar politicalaffairs should be coped with Myanmarway and Myanmar spirit.

“We are not going tocooperate against our-selves,” he told a newsconference. “We do notlike the explanation (givenby the United States forhaving the system).”

“We believe abilateral decision hasalready been madebetween the United Statesand the Czech Republic, and the United States andPoland,” said Ivanov, whohas overall charge ofRussia’s defence sector.

The United Statessays the shield is neededto protect against missileattacks from what it callsrogue states such as Iranand North Korea.

It wants to placeelements of the shield inPoland and the CzechRepublic but Russia hasdenounced the project asa threat to its nationalsecurity.

US Defence SecretaryRobert Gates, on a visit toMoscow last month tosoften Russian oppositionto the plan, offeredMoscow the opportunityto cooperate on strategicmissile defence.

“As to the strategic partof the missile defence shield, the talk about cooperationis just discussions tocalm public opinion inEurope,” Ivanov said.

BEIJING, 23 May—Saturn rings are made upof clumps of particles withempty spaces in bet-weenand may be muchdenser than realized,

scientists said on Tuesday.Measurements taken

from the joint NASA,Italian and European

which surprised scientists.“The rings are different

from the picture we had inour minds,” said LarryEsposito of the Universityof Colorado at Boulder, who led the study doneusing ultraviolet imaging.

“If the clumps werefarther from Saturn, theymight aggregate evenmore to make a moon butbecause they are so closeto the massive planet, theyget stretched apart,” headded.—Internet

World CO2 emissions increasingfaster than expected

LOS ANGELES, 23 May — The world has seen a rapid rise in carbon dioxide(CO2) emissions from fossil fuels over recent years, US scientists said.

CO2 emissions haveaccelerated globally at afar greater rate thanexpected, according to apaper published this weekin the Proceedings of theNational Academy ofSciences.

The paper explains thatthe average growth rate ofcarbon dioxide emissionsincreased from 1.1 percenta year in the 1990s to a 3-percent increase per yearin the 2000s.

Nearly 8 billion tonsof carbon were emittedglobally into theatmosphere as carbondioxide in 2005, comparedwith just 6 billion tons in1995, says Lead author ofthe paper, Dr Mike

Raupach from CSIROMarine and AtmosphericResearch and the GlobalCarbon Project.

This indicates thatrecent efforts globally toreduce emissions have hadlittle impact on emissionsgrowth, according toRaupach. ”In the last fewyears, the global usage offossil fuels has actuallybecome less efficient. Thisadds to pressures fromincreasing po

“As countries undergoindustrial development, they move through aperiod of intensive, andoften inefficient, use offossil fuel,” he says.

Efficiencies improvealong this development

trajectory, but eventuallytend to level off.Industrialized countriessuch as Australia and theUS are at the leveling-offstage, while developingcountries are at theintensive-developmentstage, according toRaupach. “Both factorsare decreasing the globalefficiency of fossil fueluse,” he says.

He says that China’semissions per person arestill below the globalaverage. “On average, eachperson in Australia and theUS now emits more thanfive tons of carbon per year, while in China the figure isonly one ton per year.”

Salt increases ulcer-bugvirulence

WASHINGTON, 23 May— Scientists have warnedhigh concentrations of saltin the stomach appear toinduce gene activity in theulcer-causing bacteriumHelicobacter pylori, making it more virulentand increasing thelikelihood of an infectedperson developing asevere gastric disease.

“Apparently the sto-mach pathogen H pyloriclosely monitors the dietsof those people whom itinfects.

Epidemiological evi-dence has long impliedthat there is a connection

between H pylori and thecomposition of thehuman diet.

This is especially truefor diets rich in salt,” saysHanan Gancz, of theUniformed ServicesUniversity of the HealthSciences in Bethesda,Maryland, who presentsthe research on Tuesdayat the 107th GeneralMeeting of the AmericanSociety for Microbiologyin Toronto. “We notedthat H pylori growth rateshows a sharp decline athigh salt concentrations.

Moreover, bacterialcells exposed to increasedsalt exhibited strikingmorphological changes:cells became elongated

and formed long chains,”says Gancz.—Internet

Davydenko, Roddick power into quarterfinals VIENNA, 24 May — Top seeds Nikolay

Davydenko and Andy Roddick continuedtheir impressive starts to the ATP tourna-ment in Poertschach on Wednesday withboth enjoying comfortable second roundwins. Roddick, the American world numberthree and tournament second seed, dis-posed of Denmark's Kristian Pless 6-4, 6-3while Davydenko beat Ecuador's NicolasLapentti 6-4, 6-2.

Just as in his opening round win overAustrian wildcard Alexander Peya, Roddickrelied heavily on strong serving -- winningall but nine of his 49 service points.

Pless' chances were apparently nothelped by a neck injury midway through thematch.

Roddick's win earned him his first quar-terfinal spot at a claycourt tournament in

over a year and suggested a strong im-provement in form since his early exitfrom this month's Masters Series event inRome. Rarely at his best on clay, theformer world number one is hoping tofine-tune his game before next week'sFrench Open, where he has never beenpast the third round.

His next test in Poertschach comes inthe form of 20-year-old Frenchman GaelMonfils, who downed Roddick 6-2, 6-3during last year's Rome quarterfinals.

Davydenko, who is looking to win histhird successive title at this event, had toface one of his bogey opponents onWednesday, with Lapentti boasting a 3-0record in previous head-to-head meetingswith the current world number four.

Kameda, who relin-quished his WBA light-fly-weight title, emerged fromthe mouth of a fire-breath-ing dragon's mouth for the10-round fight in front ofhis hometown fans inOsaka. GENEVA, 24 May — Whales, dolphins and porpoises are facing increasing threats from climate change, said a new report published by environmental group World Wildlife Fund WWF and the Whale and DolphinConservation Society (WDCS) on Tuesday.

Ocean’s biggest mammals threatened byclimate change

The report “Whalesin hot water?” highlightedthe growing impacts ofclimate change oncetaceans, which rangefrom changes in seatemperature and thefreshening of the seawaterbecause of the melting ofice and increased rainfalls,to sea level rise, loss of icypolar habitats and thedecline of krill populationsin key areas.

Krill, a tiny shrimp-like marine animal that isdependent on sea ice, is the

main source of food formany of the great whales.

Accelerating climatechange adds significantlyto disturbances from otherhuman activities, such aschemical and noisepollution, collisions withships and entanglement infishing nets, which killssome 1,000 cetaceansevery day. “Whales, dolphins and porpoiseshave some capacity toadapt to their changingenvironment,” said MarkSimmonds, international

director of science atWDCS.

“But the climate isnow changing at such a fastpace that it is unclear towhat extent whales anddolphins will be able toadjust, and we believemany populations to bevery vulnerable topredicted changes,” hesaid.

Climate changeimpacts are currentlygreatest in the Arctic andthe Antarctic. According tothe report, cetaceans thatrely on polar, icy waters fortheir habitat and foodresources — such asbelugas, narwhal, andbowhead whales — arelikely to be dramaticallyaffected by the reductionof sea ice cover.

And as sea ice coverdecreases, there will bemore human activities, such as commercialshipping, oil, gas andmining exploration anddevelopment as well asmilitary activities, inpreviously untouched areas

of the Arctic. “This willresult in much greater risksfrom oil and chemicalspills, worse acousticdisturbance and morecollisions between whalesand ships,” said the leadauthor of the report,Wendy Elliott, fromWWF’s Global SpeciesProgramme.

Other projectedimpacts of climate changelisted in the report include:reduction of availablehabitat for several cetaceanspecies unable to moveinto colder waters (eg riverdolphins); the acidificationof the oceans as theyabsorb growing quantitiesof CO2; an increasedsusceptibility of cetaceansto diseases; and reducedreproductive success, bodycondition and survivalrates.

WCDS and WWFare urging governments tocut CO2 global emissionsby at least 50 per cent bythe middle of this century.
