Stuckart Wins at Knobbys

Jerry Stuckart recovered from a hot-seat loss, and redeemed himself by double dipping Jack Scerca to win Knobby’s 9’s & Under 8-Ball tournament on May 6th.

Stuckart and Scerca were the early favorites in the field of 28 players, and didn’t disappoint as they both stayed undefeated until the hot-seat match. That match was won by Scerca 2-1.

Stuckart didn’t stay on the left side long, as a quick win over Joe Nicita earned him another shot at Scerca in the finals.

Scerca won the first game of the finals, but that would be his last game. Stuckart won two to win the first set, and then won the single game in the second set for first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Jerry Stuckart $270 5th Ken Gouso $302nd Jack Scerca $170 5th Tony Scerca $303rd Joe Nicita $110 7th Ed Scott $104th Bruce Hirose $60 7th Chuck Parrill $10

The Diamond Pool Tour’s second event of the season crowned a new champion, Gus Briseno, on May 14th - 15th. The event was 9-ball on the 7’ tables at Sting-ers. Briseno successfully came back from the one loss side to double dip Bret Huth in the finals.

The “A” division drew 26 players, and at first glance, the brackets looked to be set up for a Bobby Emmons/Mitch Ellerman hot-seat battle. The other 24 players had something to say about that though, and neither player made it to the hot-seat match. Ellerman fell to Bret Huth in a hill-hill second round match, while Emmons would only make it to the final four before falling to Briseno hill-hill. The “A” bracket hot-seat match came down to Huth vs Briseno, with Huth scoring the hill-hill win. On the one loss side, Briseno bounced back with a 7-4 win over Emmons to earn his place on the final bracket.

The “B” division drew 39 players, including tour newcomer Kurt Siebels. Sieb-els cut a path through the “B” bracket, with notable wins over Joe Chyzy, Brian Long and Michael Dale on his way to the hot-seat match, where he dispatched another tour newcomer, Tenadore Lee, 7-4. Tenadore would spend a short time on the left side of the board, as he eliminated Tucson’s Tonee Allin 7-4 to earn his place on the final board. Special note should be made of the performance from two former Junior players in this event. Both Michael Dale and Nick Kline are now too old to take advantage of the tour’s policy of allowing juniors to play for free, but that didn’t stop either of them from turning in great perfor-mances. Dale finished in 4th on the “B” bracket (7th overall) and Kline finished in 7th on the “B” bracket, 13th overall.

When the two brackets came together, Kurt Siebels came within one game of securing the hot-seat as a “B” player. Siebels fought to hill-hill before Huth was able to win the match 7-6. On the one loss side, Briseno had a slightly easier match as he defeated Lee 7-4. After seeing how close the Siebels/Huth match was, Briseno took no chances and beat Siebels 7-2 to earn his place in the finals against Huth. The first set of the finals saw Briseno score a 7-4 victory, which seemed to take the wind out of Huth’s sails, as Briseno then went on to score a 7-1 victory for his first Diamond Pool Tour victory.

As always, tour organizers gave their thanks to Dale and his staff for taking care of a room of pool players, Rick Schmitz for the best photos that any tour gets to enjoy, and “Fast” Lenny Marshall for tirelessly streaming another great two day event.

The Diamond Pool Tour will travel to Tucson for stop 3 on June 18th, where the players will be playing 10-ball on the 9’ tables at Pockets Billiards.

Changes

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

Arizona is rapidly becoming the nation’s leader in the world of pool. We are setting per-capita standards for number of leagues, number of tournaments, and number of competitive play-ers. And this strong player base is spurring most of the Arizona pool rooms to upgrade their equipment at an amazing rate.

However, along with changes in equipment comes a need for changes in the way that equipment is used and maintained.

The average cost to recover a 9-ft pool table in Simonis cloth these days is $500. That’s more than some people pay for a complete pool table. But since Simonis is the preferred cloth amongst competition pool players, pool room owners are practically forced to supply that brand. And although a pool room might receive a volume discount on the cloth, redoing every table in a medium-sized room can still run upwards of $20,000.

That makes it a small wonder why a pool room owner might become a bit defensive when he sees his pool tables being abused. He naturally wants to make every cut of cloth last just as long as possible, and reckless, uneducated cus-tomers do not help achieve that. But aside from obvious abuse, there are a few subtle things that can shorten the life of cloth. Here, we present two of those things, and tell what one pool room is doing to alleviate those problems

Hand chalk: that white, cone-shaped stuff that sits on a peg in the middle of the pool room and is meant to serve the purpose of reducing cue drag when applied between the fingers of the bridge hand; but in reality only increases the problem as hand perspiration tends to turn

it into nothing more than a messy paste. It wouldn’t be so bad if players would just use it properly — but they don’t. Instead, most of them make a big production out of rubbing both hands all over the cone several times and then depos-iting all that mess onto the pool table where it gets into the cloth and helps wear it out that much quicker. Not to mention the unsightli-ness of it.

Bull Shooters – Arizona’s largest pool room – reached the limit of its tolerance for hand chalk the day it was discovered that a customer had taken one of the cones off of its peg and pro-ceeded to use it to write all over the bed of one of the nine-foot tables there. To address this situation, the cones were immediately thrown in the trash, and Bull Shooters now offers talc bags at the counter for the price of $3.00 each. The theory here is that players will tend to use the talc properly and sparingly if they have to pay for it. And the graffiti artists and pretend hustlers will just have to find their fun some other way.

Another problem Bull Shooters addressed is that of wear spots on the cloth that are caused by power break shots. When a cue ball is shot with a lot of force –as with the break shot – it burns a little skid mark into the cloth. When the cue ball is shot repeatedly from the same

spot – again, as happens a lot with the break shot – it will eventually wear a hole in the cloth. The solution to this problem is to place a small swatch of cloth under the cue ball when breaking. Bull Shooters now provides a break cloth with each rack of balls that goes with their rental tables. And to ease the confu-sion this change presents to many newcomers, they have written “BREAK CLOTH” on each swatch.

While I may sit here reporting these minor changes as though they are some sort of ground-shaking news, the fact of the matter is that they are not. These particular practices have been in effect in other areas for a long time. Our biggest challenge here will be in get-ting our own people accustomed to them. But the truth of the matter is that, as the emerging leader of the billiard industry, we will not only have to be accepting of minor changes such as these, we will soon need to become the origi-nators of even bigger and better changes.

Can I Get You To Watch This Shot?

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

How many times have you had to stop the flow of a match to find someone to watch the shot? This can change the match’s outcome with the change of momentum. You see the same strat-egy in professional sports when a coach calls a timeout. How about when your opponent calls for a hit to be watched and you lose your momentum? This a known problem and falls under gamesmanship which can be a very gray area and is best left to a neutral third party.

The job that referees perform in all other professional sports is holding our sport back in the dark ages. Currently we have too much gamesmanship and unsportsmanlike conduct in tournaments. Any of these actions take away for your performance on the pool table. Now that we have framed the problem how to fix it?

Money is the root of all evil and the cure to must problems as well. In this case we need to pay a separate group of people to be referees and have one for each table. This group cannot be playing in the tournaments and cannot even be in the pool scene. It’s too easy for “busi-ness” to happen and the referee is not a neutral party any longer. The Billiard congress of American Pool Leagues (BCAPL) comes the closest by hav-ing referees a few feet away for service. My hat goes off to those folks that do that job. Refereeing a pool tournament was the hardest job I have ever had. I personally will not call hits anymore in matches when asked. It is not worth the headache of listening to the side you ruled against.

Final thought: Having a referee on every table is a lofty dream but I do think that it will bring our sport into the light and make more players come out and play.

Leagues, Losing & Lessons…

Goodness gracious Phoenix foosers…as hard as it is to believe, June is upon us and I can honestly say that the foosball scene here in Phoenix is actually hotter than the weather has been. However, I have to attribute that to both the weather being below our seasonal norms and the 2016 Spring Arizona Foosball League competition heating up. In addition, ongoing tournaments continue at the following locations and consistent-ly draw a great mix of skill levels of everyone wanting to improve their game.

Fridays: Duke’s Sport Bar & Grill – Singles on alternating Fridays @ 6:30 & Doubles with alternating weekly formats between Draw Your Partner and Open Doubles events at 8:30. Great competition!Saturdays: Stinger’s Sports Bar – Doubles venues (Bring Your Partner, Draw Your Partner, Hi-Lo, etc.) along with Expert lessons for newer players starts at 3:00. Great competition and format for newer foosers!Sundays: The Loft Again – Hi-Lo Draw Your Partner format starting at 3:00. This one always brings out a friendly mix of newer and veteran players.

In addition, there’s another Phoenix Tour being finalized and is rumored to have a July start date. So, grab your wraps and continue to peruse what’s happening here in the Valley of Foos.

2016 Spring Arizona Foosball League

This season’s league play has had some very interesting and startling re-sults to date. Having just completed week 7, we only have one unbeaten team, I Pity the Foos, atop the Western Conference and maintaining a two game lead over their nearest competitors. And Make Foosball Great Again is riding the number one position in the East with a one game advantage over their closest threat. Many veteran players are taking as-sessment of their game after finding their teams farther from the top slot than they expected to be. Similarly, many rookie/amateur foosers are in a race to quickly improve their level of play to become more competitive and reverse trending downward spirals.

The top five teams in each conference will find themselves in the play-offs and striving for one of two spots in Foos Bowl XV. Look below for the standings as of May 26th.

We all know that our league is predicated on handicaps which are adjust-ed each and everything week based on our performance, with the indi-vidual performance in the ‘1 on 1 Battle’ carrying more weight than the team events. We also know that the handicap system is what levels the playing field and continues to draw new players into the league, which is the lifeblood of a healthy and growing foosball community. However, those players on the end of spotting multiple points know there is little to no margin of error when facing off against these lower handicapped players. With that in mind, we need to continue to be good sportsmen at all times and especially when we’re on the losing end of a match…despite our hatred of losing.

Although the standings tell the current story of how the teams are per-forming, the individual performance found in the Statistics section on the website provides a glimpse into how each player is fairing against the competition in each league match category. Check out the website to see how you’re doing against the following leaders.

Rollerball Daniel Blech Dan HeldHired Gun Tim Friesen Tim Friesen

Based on the nature of scheduling both Eastern and Western Confer-ences, we typically only play our cross-conference foes twice per sea-son. And since each and every match is critical in order to make the playoffs it’s very crucial knowing the skill level of your opponents since a handicap doesn’t provide a complete story and not every league player participates in the weekly tournaments. However, you can rest assured knowing there’s a process already in place for you to do just that…sub-stituting. Yes, all you need to do is to substitute for a cross-conference match which provides valuable insight against those players you don’t see regularly. So, branch out and sub for someone.

Miscellaneous

Everyone knows how much the Phoenix Tour adds to the overall foos-ball community and camaraderie here in the Valley of the Sun…aka….the Valley of Foos. So, for those of you not aware of what the Phoenix Tour is, it’s an ongoing promotion where players compete in Doubles tournaments all around the Phoenix area and are rated for overall perfor-mance during a three month stretch of events. There are two main prizes for each session - one for the overall champion, and another for the high-est placing rookie. Now that you’ve been informed, please add it to your upcoming calendar of events that the next ‘Tour’ is tentatively scheduled to start in July.

If anyone is interested in getting involved in any of the previously men-tioned venues in any capacity, visit www.ArizonaFoosball.com and reg-ister using the current signup sheet, post in our forums, or contact Bill Nolan at 602-751-8818. In addition, you can get the latest and greatest details on any foos related activities at this same awesome site.

Of those 48 players Skip Bales & Pete Williams took the Scotch side going 4-0 vs Sylvia/Donald, Will/Tina, Kip/Jason & Carlos/Brandon. Once you lose on the scotch side you ditch your partner and flip into the singles side. Losing his 2nd match in scotch Scott Lutz battled through the singles side early defeating Carey, Tina, Sonia, Jason D, Francisco & Carlos to team up with Frank Alvarez Jr who had to defeat Jason B, Harold & Brandon to set up the battle for 1st. In the end the two teams decided to split the pot and call it a day! 1st place won $360 & 2nd took $250. The battle for 5th place was a race to 2 between Brandon Hinners & Carlos Preston for $110. Brandon won that battle!

And lastly was the Wild Card Tournament with 8 teams participating in a single elimination race to 3 wins battle! Of those 8 the Black Sheep of Jester’s Billiards beat out the Four Horsemen and Maximize the Fun before playing a 9-game match vs Just Wanta Have Fun. In that match Tina of Just Wanta Have Fun beat Rhonda 10-7 to start it off before the Black Sheep went on a 30-13 run. Tracy & Duane won a couple games 20-11 to make it a 50-48 Have Fun lead at the end of two rounds. In a battle of the top female rookies Eva beat Tina 10-2 to start off the 3rd round. Tracy defeated Rhonda 10-6 to make it a 64-62 Black Sheep lead heading into the 9th game. Joel vs Duane. Winner take all. In the end Joel won 10-6 to give the Black Sheep a 74-68 victory and the 32nd spot in the tournament!!

Saturday it was all about the teams. Thirty-two of them to be exact! Opening the day at 9am were 8 teams vy-ing for that 1st place prize! Of the 8 Reconstruction fin-ished highest with a 10th place finish! Going on a tear through the winners side they defeated Mountainairre, Maralize Leguana, Fifth & Long, Travis Bickle, Curry with White Rice and Cash Money before being sent to the losers side by reigning champs No Name! A nice 6-match winning streak! They lost their 1st match on the losers side to Ballz in Hand which knocked them out of the main bracket and into the secondary bracket. In that bracket they defeated Curry with White Rice and Beer Me before getting knocked out by A Few Sticks Shy! Good for an 8-3 record! Wild Card winner Black Sheep started off with a pair of losses in the main bracket before going on a tear in the secondary bracket going 4-0 before losing to Str8 Hustlin. They finished at 4-3 while finishing in 16th overall! Great job!! Kathy’s Boyz, which started at 11am went on a 6-0 run of their own before losing to eventual champs Chicken Dicks knocked them to the losers side. They promptly defeated Pedal to the Medal to set up a rematch vs the Dicks, eventually finishing in 2nd place with $1,250!! Third place went to Pedal to the Medal which won $1,000!! #2 ranked team A Few Sticks Shy lost their first two matches in the main bracket dropping them to the secondary bracket. In that bracket they defeated Tough Times, Str8 Hustlin & Reconstruction to fin-ish in 9th place (1st in their bracket) with $350 & their weekly dues paid for the entire season!! Longest win-

ning streak on the losers side of the bracket goes to Ballz in Hand who defeated Maralize Leguana, Derailed Too, Derailed and Reconstruction before losing to Cash Money.

Francisco Serrano of Pedal to the Medal is the Championships MVP going 21-8 while scoring 234 points, 4 30-point games, 2 8-ball breaks and 5 10-0s while allowing 89 points. If 80 of those points account for his 8 losses those other 9 points were spread out over those other 21 wins for an average of less than half a point allowed per win. WOW! Only Anthony Beyale scored more points with 243. Leading the ladies was Eva Monville of the Black Sheep going 12-8 while scoring 159, allowing 143, with a 30 and a match average of almost 24! Chad Metivier continued this seasons dominance by shooting over 8 points over his career average with a MA of 29.33 while going 8-1! Tara Negrin of Ladies & the Tramp was the women’s most im-proved shooter in the tourney shooting a 23.50 MA which was 3 points over her career average!

Thank you to everyone who came out and made this weekend a great one! It is always great to see you all! Thanks to everyone at Stinger’s who did a great job taking care of all of us! Thank you to Doc & Jen who helped out on Friday night! Much appreciated! And thank you to Tina who did a wonderful job assisting me all weekend! I love you! Arizona Billiard & Dart News June 2016

“I don’t miss important events,” said Doug Now-lin. “And on May 21, eight ladies’ teams battled it out at Main Street Billiards for the privilege to represent Phoenix in Las Vegas this coming August for the Ladies National Championship at the Westgate Resort and Casino. “

APA sends two ladies teams each year to the event to compete for cash and prizes. There will be $10,000 up for grabs for the first place fin-isher this year. The Ladies Championship is part of the APA’s National Team Tournament held at the Westgate Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas every year in August. The week-long event, now called the ‘World Poolplayer’s Championships’, is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest Pool tournament in the world, a distinction that the APA is very proud of. Teams come from all over the world to compete in this event, said Gina Nowlin, the APA’s league opera-tor here in Phoenix.

The first of the two qualifying teams was Ball Buzzards. Nancy Witts, the captain, will take her team to Vegas for the second time in two years where they will compete in the event. The team members include Nancy, Claudette Metz, Bar-bara Shelley, Alesia Langer, and Sherrie McCau-ley who won the first spot in our local qualifying tournament. Later in the same tournament, the second team, Twisted Sisters won their own spot to represent the APA here in Phoenix. Diane Loram (captain), Sharon Randall, Jamee Randall, and Jane Igl made up the team of competitive ladies that will enjoy a trip to the National event with expenses paid by the APA Phoenix Metro Pool League. League operator Gina Nowlin said, “I’m really proud of these ladies. They played hard all year, and their husbands and friends make up their greatest rooting section.”

Ladies Vegas is only one of many local tournaments during the year that APA puts on to select the teams that will represent the league in Las Vegas each August. Every year the local APA league sends several teams of Amateur pool players that play in all different formats. We have teams that play 8 Ball, 9 Ball, both 8 ball and 9 ball doubles, Ladies, and Masters to name a few. We have virtually every format of pool imaginable said Gina. The APA is the only pool league in the world that allows the ‘Entry Level’ pool player to compete in Las Vegas with as much a chance to win as the players who have been playing for years. The Equalizer Handicap-ping System is the fairest way to keep all level of play-ers on an equal playing field. Everyone can play and anyone can win.

For information about joining the APA Pool League contact either Gina or Doug Nowlin at 602-920-9192 or 602-920-9193.

Triple Horns Win Skip & Jan’s Triples Event

Triple Horns (Mike Nevarez, Rico Gonzalez & Jamie Goodwin) were the team to beat at Skip & Jans’ Scotch Triples event on May 21st. Three straight 5-4 wins was all that Triple Horns needed to run the winner’s side and take the hot-seat. Two of those wins were hill-hill, including their win over Robbin’s Perfect Angels (Robbin Grammatico, Perfecto Diaz and Angel Miranda) in the hot-seat match.

On the one loss side, 3 Blind Mice (Brian Poore, Veronica Poore & David Wiseman) were making up for an earlier loss to Triple Horns. 3 Blind Mice won three straight matches on the one loss side by a combined score of 21-7.

Even with that kind of momentum, 3 Blind Mice had no answer for Triple Horns in the finals. The final match went one set with Triple Horns winning 5-0.

Briseno over Frost at Bullshooters

Gus Briseno did what many players have struggled to do: he defeated Scott Frost in the finals of a local one pocket tournament. The event was the One Pocket Madness tournament at Bullshooters on May 7th.

Frost was his usual dominating self, early in the event, with wins over Bret Huth, Chad Barber and then Briseno for the hot-seat.

Briseno eliminated Barber 2-1 on the one loss side and the finals rematch be-tween he and Frost was underway.

Briseno drew first blood and led 1-0. Frost tied things up at 1-1, but Briseno won the next two for the 3-1 victory.

Carrizosa Wins at Main Street

Junior Carrizosa took the long route, but still ended up in the winner’s circle at Main Street Billiards’ 6 & Under 9-Ball event on May 14th.

Carrizosa’s day started out fine with a bye and then a hill-hill win over James Diaz. Things then went downhill quickly, as Carrizosa dropped a 5-0 match to Pete Panaroni. Panaroni would then lose to Dustin Ballard as part of Ballard’s run to the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Carrizosa put together a five match winning streak to earn his spot in the finals against Ballard. Carrizosa then went on to score back to back wins over Ballard 5-3 and 5-0 for first place.
