I am very happy to welcome The Ox Sports Bar back to the pages of the paper. Don is the new owner over there and it sounds like he has some great plans for the future. Make sure to swing by and say “hi”. Couple interesting tournaments on the horizon. Bullshooters is throwing a blind draw scotch doubles event on April 27th and Metro (along with a lot of friends) is throwing a $500 added 8’s & Under event on May 4th. Check out the ad on page two for more info about this tourney. I am very saddened to report that the local pool world lost Marvin Lawson last month. Marvin was a long time member of the local pool scene and he will be missed. By the time you read this, the memorial at The Snap on April 4th will probably have already passed. Until next time...

Burkhart Wins at Knobbys

Knobby’s held their 9 and under monthly 8-ball tournament March 1st with a field of fourteen players competing in the 200% payback event

J.R Burkhart and Burt Balancad played for the hot seat. J.R. won the 1st game which then gave Burt the break in the second game. Burt broke and ran that rack but JR returned the favor and ran out the last game to take the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Larry Eans beat Sophia Morquecho 2-0 which set up a great battle between Larry and Burt. Larry took that match 2-1 over Burt.

In the finals, both 9’s end up matching up. Larry found himself winning the 1st set 2-0 against JR. As they battled it out in the second set, JR put an end to the night beating Larry 2-0 for first place. Thank you everyone who came out and a special thanks to Bruce and Carol who always provide dinner for all the pool players! The next tournament is Friday, April 5, 2013. Hope to see you there. Payouts are as follows:1st JR Burkhart 200.00 2nd Larry Eans 100.00 3rd Burt Balancad 50.00 4th Sophia Morquecho 10.00

Burt Balancad, JR Burkhart and Larry Eans

Jason Sweet took the long road, but still ended up in the winners circle at the Desert Classic Tour’s B/C event at Bullshooters on March 23rd and 24th.

It was hard to pick out a favorite with this tough field that included such notables as Burt Bal-ancad, Mike Hamman, Pat Dicker, Will Sexton, Carl Stewart, Oscar Avila, Jude Espinoza and Jason Sweet.

Sweet’s path through the brackets took an unex-pected detour midway through Saturday when he lost a match to JR Flores and had to take the trip to the one loss side.

Flores would continue through Saturday unde-feated, only to lose to Gary Koschnik on Sunday in the final four on the winners side. Koschnik has been a long time supporter of the Desert Classic Tour, playing in all of the open events improving his game every time. In this event, he would face off against Tucson’s Carl Stewart for the hot-seat.

Koschnik gave it his all, but Stewart was too much for him to deal with, as Stewart took the hot-seat with a 7-4 victory.

On the one loss side, Flores bounced back from his loss to Koschnik and defeated Chris Miller 7-5. At the same time, Pat Dicker dropped his second straight match in a 7-4 loss to Sweet.

Flores looked ready to end Sweet’s run as he led the next match 6-4, but Sweet came back to win the last three games and steal the match 7-6.

The semi-final match saw Sweet taking on Kos-chnik in a 7-6 race. Again, Sweet looked to be on

the ropes as Koschnik led the match 5-3, only to see the pockets ap-pear to shrink on Kos-chnik as he was unable to win another game against Sweet. Sweet won four straight games to capture the match 7-5 and earn his place in the finals against Stewart.

Stewart had looked un-touchable all weekend, while Sweet struggled early in his last couple of matches, So of course, Sweet ran over Stewart in the first set of the finals. Sweet broke a 1-1 tie and ran out to a 4-1 lead before winning that match 7-2.

In the second set of the finals, Sweet just kept on win-ning as he pocketed the first four 9-balls for a quick 4-0 lead. Stewart would be unable to put anything together in this match as Sweet scored another 7-2 win in the second set for first place.

Final Payouts:

1st Jason Sweet $5202nd Carl Stewart $2403rd Gary Koschnik $1304th JR Flores $805th Chris Miller $65 5th Pat Dicker $165 (with side pots)7th Will Sexton $60 (with side pots)7th Larry Coffey

Rebecca Wagner made her way through a field of thirty one players to capture the first Ari-zona Women’s Billiards Tour event of the 2013 season, but it was far from “the usual suspects” fighting it out with her at the end of the event.

The field of players was another strong one with representatives from Las Vegas and New Mexico, as well as players from Prescott and Tucson filling out the field. The usual top players including Wagner, Susan Williams, Stacy Allsup and Sara Miller were joined by notables includ-ing Bernie Store, Amanda Pulley, Leandrea Gaff, Ashea Erdahl and Susan Wilbur.

The brackets worked their way down to the typi-cal final four of Wagner, Allsup, Williams and a random fourth player. This time, that fourth player was Amanda Pulley; who has been mak-ing her share of noise on the ladies pool scene recently. Pulley would score the upset, with a 7-4 win over Williams. Wagner would send Allsup to the left side of the board with a 7-3 scoreline.

The next match would see Wagner defeat Aman-da in a 7-6 match for the hot-seat.

Known more for her bar-table game, Bernie Store proved that she also knew her way around the 9-foot table on this weekend. After a first round loss to Allsup, Store won five straight matches - including wins over Jeri Engh, Jodie Villegas, Tracie Hamman and Sara Miller. Asst tour director Tres Kane summed it up as he commented “Bernie is a danger to win on any size table”. Store wasn’t settling for just cashing in this event as she went on to eliminate Susan Williams 7-5 and then Stacy Allsup 7-4 to earn a match against Pulley with the winner moving on to the finals.

The match between Bernie and Amanda started out close at 2-2, but Bernie took control and won the match 7-3 to eliminate Pulley in 3rd place.

The extended final match between Bernie and Rebecca was a back and forth affair the whole way. Rebec-ca’s 1-0 lead was quickly erased and Bernie took a 3-1 lead. Each player would fight back from deficits and the score would end up tied at 5-5 before Rebecca took control of the match and won the last four games for the 9-5 win and first place.

The second chance event was won by New Mexico’s Rhea Brooks, who defeated Sara Sorg in the finals. Ly-nor Johnson and Alicia (Pocahantas) Streenz filled out the top four place in the second chance event.

The AWBT will be at Stingers in Phoenix on April 20th and 21st for their next event.

Final Payouts:1st Rebecca Wagner $3502nd Bernie Store $2403rd Amanda Pulley $1804th Stacy Allsup $1405th Susan Williams $1005th Susan WIlbur $1007th Donna Taylor $657th Sara Miller $659th Lynor Johnson $309th Tracie Hamman $309th Ashea Erdahl $309th Rhea Brooks $30

Over the last couple of months, you can’t go into an Arizona pool tournament without see-ing someone wearing Slikster apparel. And that is just what Slikster’s creator George Bell was hoping for.

Slikster began in 2006 as an idea of branding for Pool, Poker & Darts. The original idea involved a design relevant to any game in which someone chooses to participate and become a ‘Master of the Game’. Bell definitely plans on expanding into the worlds of darts and poker as soon as he can. “If you look closely at the logo, in the middle there’s a SPADE on the S. And, if you look closely at the R, it looks like a hand holding a dart. I designed it that way because it includes poker and darts too” Bell commented.

For now though, Bell has focused on the billiards world. Bell said “I’ve been following Hustlin USA and other apparel companies and want to compete with them in the future. Slikster is a baby company right now though, so the only way to get eyes on us is to create different eye popping designs that pool shooters can relate to.” As an example, Bell pointed out his “Don’t poke it, gotta stroke it” shirt. “Any pool shooters from beginners to pros can relate to that. and having a sharp logo design makes the icing on the cake” said Bell.

Bell says the response has been great so far. “I get goose bumps when I’m out shooting and I see another player wearing Slikster gear. It feels good. Big thanks to all of the supporters here in town.” said Bell.

Bell wants to expand in two different directions for the future, one direction is in types of mar-

kets. When asked if there were plans outside of Pool, darts and poker, Bell responded that he would love to get into the MMA world. “My ultimate would be having the Slikster logo in the cage in MMA. I can visualize that.” Bell said with a chuckle.

Bell’s other expansion involves moving not only out of Arizona, but out of the United States. Bell said “For the future, I would like Slikster to be International. Europe,Asia and so on. When people think of of pool, I want them to think Slikster”. As it turns out, Bell won’t have to wait long to realize this goal as he has entered into a sponsorship agreement with Imran Majid, the #1 ranked player in the UK. Imran will be wearing the Slikster logo in the upcoming European Champi-onships. Bell joked, “Imran’s other sponsor is a little company called Predator. So I guess we are in good company”.

River City Pockets’ fi rst 15 and under Scotch Doubles tournament was held over the March 9th weekend. There were 9 strong teams competing for over $500.00 in prize money.

The hot seat match found Joe Nicita and Pat Schultz doing battle with Phil An-derson and Chuck Bobbitt. Joe and Pat won the hill-hill match sending Chuck and Phil to the one loss side.

Chuck and Phil faced Steve Henderson and Lawrence Ybarra for 2nd and 3rd. Not to be denied a rematch with Joe and Pat, Chuck and Phil defeated Steve and Lawrence 6-3. For their efforts, Steve and Lawrence went home with $95.00.

Due to the lateness of the hour, Joe and Pat decided to split with Chuck and Phil. Joe and Pat went home with $185.00, while Chuck and Phil garnered $230.00.

Greg and his staff provided a great venue and outstanding service. I hope to see everyone there on April 13th.

Final Payouts:

The Committee took a new direction with Chair-man Kevin Arco moving out of state for his career. Together both leaders will help to work with all the pool rooms and bars in the state and produce the best product in fair and justified ratings. Bill lives on the East Side and Jerry on the West Side of the Phoenix Metro Area and this conjoined effort will help align ratings and rooms across the state.

Harold Lyons & Jeff Vikete teamed up to go undefeated at Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on March 30th; but due to the large field of teams (24 teams) they agreed to split in the finals against BBQ & Joe Nicita.

Lyons and Vikete took the hot-seat with an 8-6 win over Steve Daluna & Joe Farias.

On the one loss side, BBQ & Nicita had bounced back nicely from an earlier loss. After defeating JR Flores & Melcher Leal, BBQ & Joe then eliminated John Casey & Ebony Kelly 7-4. While this was going on, the father & son pairing of Dave & Steve Stowers were eliminating Claudia Justus & her part-ner Selwyn. After that, Team Stowers then eliminated Eric Winemiller & Ray Lipinid.

One of the teams on the left side of the board were going to have to see their winning streak end, and that team would be the Stowers as they dropped a 7-7 decision to BBQ & Nicita.

BBQ and Joe weren’t slowing down though and went on to then eliminate Da-luna & Farias 7-4 to earn their spot in the finals.

The clock on the wall already said 3:00 am before the finals could get underway, and that was late enough for all parties concerned to call it a night and agree to a split of first and second place.

Final Payouts:

1st Harold Lyons & Jeff Vikete $5702nd BBQ & Joe Nicita $5703rd Steve Daluna & Joe Farias $2004th Dave Stowers & Steve Stowers $80

APA’s Junior Division held their tri-annual “Junior/Adult” tournament on March 17th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. This tournament is becoming one of the most popular tournaments that we run, said Gina Nowlin, APA league Operator for Maricopa County. Both the juniors and the Adults have a great time playing together as a team, she said. This event is a great way that parents and kids can spend an afternoon together having a good time doing something that’s fun and safe.

The Juniors Division began just 3 years ago and has grown to 26 members. In fact, according to Gina it has become so popular and grown so fast that we have had to split it into 2 divisions. The older kids play in the “Young Guns” division that includes players from ages 11 to 17. The younger group, dubbed “Junior Guns” consist of shooters under the age of 11.

The juniors play every other Sunday afternoon at Bullshooters in Phoenix. They play three sessions per year, ending each session with an awards ceremony, lunch, and then the coveted Junior/ Adult Scotch Doubles Tournament.

Winners of the tournament receive trophies and gift certifi cates to a local retailer. To enter this tournament the junior gets to pick any adult that they want to play with, or if you are a current member of APA and have a young Gun in your family that would like to give it a try, you would also be welcome.

Winners for this Spring session tournament are:

First place - Jeremy Schneider and James MainSecond Place - Isaiah and Abe PadillaThird Place – Jahnythan Craig and Karloz

Chavez

Another activity to raise money for the junior Nation-als is the “Team Juniors Challenge Match”. The juniors have an open challenge to any and all regular adult APA teams in Maricopa County to play for bragging rights. They have been taken up on their challenge twice now and have defeated both the adult teams they’ve played.

These are an awesome group of Kids.

You can check the local website at www.apaphx.com for more information on this tournament. You can also check out our ad in this issue for date and time. We would like to invite everyone to come down and sup-port the juniors. They are the future of our sport.

These players qualify to play in their Regional event by playing in a local qualifier from the player’s area. In Phoe-nix we hold local qualifier boards periodically throughout the year. They are usually combined

with our monthly tournaments but can also be held indi-vidually. Players advance after winning a local qualifier board to the Regionals, and then on to the National Sin-gle Championships held in Las Vegas. Rooms and entry fees into the tournament are paid for the winners. They are also given travel assistance to Las Vegas. Contact your local APA League Operator if you are interested in playing in a regional or National event.

APA also has two Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles teams that will be playing at the National Championships this month. Brad Andrews and Polly Hughes qualified for this event at our annual “Valentine Day Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles Tournament”. Tim and Nancy Witts Qualified by winning the Jack and Jill Scotch Doubles Division that is played at Bullshooters each Friday evening.

We wish all players that will be competing at our Na-tional Single Championships in Las Vegas lots of luck.

We probably hear the word fundamentals used more often in conjunction with sports than with most other activities. And in any given sport we are told that we must first learn the fun-damentals before we can learn other facets of the game. And we often hear things said like, “He has gone back to working on his fundamentals.”

But what, exactly, is meant by “the fundamentals”? I know that would depend on the cho-sen sport, but can you tell me what the fundamentals in pool are?

When I stopped to ponder this question for myself one day, I realized that even I wasn’t able to properly answer it. I needed help. So I sought the course that I normally take in situa-tions like this, which is to im-mediately run to my bookcase and get a dictionary.

A quick check of my dictionary in-formed me that the words fundamental and basic mean the same thing. A lot of help that was! Basically speaking, I was still in the dark.

So I then read the second definition for the word fundamental and was told that it is something that forms a foundation for other things to be built upon. That’s good, but it still didn’t answer the question; because if you was to apply that definition to the actual construction of a building, you would find yourself with truckloads of bricks, blocks, lumber and steel, but you wouldn’t know (unless you’re an architect) which should be used in the foundation of the building and which should be used in the upper levels.

So then, still searching for help, I read down to a third definition that said fundamentals are those things that are “most important”. Now I knew I was getting somewhere! All that was left to figure out was: what are the most im-portant things to remember in building a solid pool game?

After considerable thought, I came up with a long list of things that I believed to be important in learning how to play good pool. But then I realized that that long list of mine constituted nothing more than truckloads of building mate-rials without any knowledge of where they should go. In other words, which ones should make up the foundation, and which ones should be reserved for the upper levels?

So after even more thought and care-ful study, I pared my list down to only four essential things that I believe every player should employ on each and every shot.

These four things (The Fundamentals) are:

Straight AlignmentLevel CueStay DownFollow Through

You probably noticed right away (being the well-focused reader you

What Are “THE FUNDAMENTALS”?

are) that my list didn’t include things you might have expect-ed, like stance, grip, bridge, or stroke. Well, that’s because those things can vary greatly from great player to great player but they still don’t keep those players from playing great, so they must not be all that fundamental to great play.

So I’ll now elaborate a little on each of my newly found fun-damentals so that you will be able to better understand how they made it to my final list of “most” important.

Straight Alignment. No player would intentionally line up their feet, head, hands and arms in such a way as to point their cue in some direction other than that in which they want the cue ball to travel. So make sure you’re lined up straight on every shot before shooting it.

APA players met in Las Vegas on March 21 through the 24th where 15 teams attended the 2013 8 Ball Southwest Challenge Tournament held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino. 181 three player teams from all over the Southwest com-peted for over $25,000 in Cash at this popular annual event. 5 of our 15 Phoenix teams made it to the money rounds which paid down to 33rd place. Our highest placing team made it all the way to 3th and won $1500, which more than paid their entry fee and rooms. Gary Wheeler, Oscar Herrera and Justin Turner, who play out of Main Street Billiards on Thursday nights, played very strong to secure the 3rd place spot. Jeremy Zastrow, Tya Santos and Eric Peterson, who also play out of Main Street Billiards, took 5th Place and $900 in cash. Jeremy’s team won their entry into this tournament by winning the Southwest challenge Tune-up Tourney back in January. Three teams shared 33rd place winning $180 Cash each. They included:

Rich Coon, Jimmy Hinnant and Jose Cardenas Greg Vannoni, Jessie Gardella and Cheryl Wal-ters David McCauley, Luke Spreitzer and Sheldon Holderied

Everyone had a great time playing in both the main event and the all night mini tournaments. There were vendors there to take care of the player’s equipment and accessories, as well as souvenirs from the event.

In October APA will host the 9 Ball version of this same event at the same location in Vegas. It will be the same 3 person team format except the game will be 9 Ball instead of 8 Ball. Teams can start signing up in August so anyone interested in playing contact Doug or Gina Nowlin from APA

Arizona Billiard & Dart News April 2013WANTED: Beginners, and Other

Non-Seasoned Pool PlayersHave you ever thought about joining a pool league, but just couldn’t bring your-self to do it because you were afraid of embarrassing yourself? If so, we have good news for you!

Bull Shooters Billiards in NW Phoenix is starting a new in-house pool league on Monday nights that will be geared toward beginners and other players who have little, or no, prior league experience.

The new league will be called the Intro League because that is what it is intend-ed to do: introduce new people to the realm of league play. Even people who have never played the game before are being encouraged to sign up, as Bull Shooters has enlisted the help of qualified volunteers who are ready to teach new players at no charge. League members will not only be taught the rules and given fundamentals coaching, they will be offered continued support throughout the league season.

Bull Shooter’s Intro League is not associated with any national league organiza-tions, so there will be no sanction fees or sign-up fees involved. Weekly dues will be a very modest $5.00 per player, and all teams that complete the league schedule will receive cash prizes at the end of the season. In addition, the top team(s) will receive trophies for their accomplishment(s).

The targeted start date for the first season is April 8.

If you, or someone you know, are interested in playing in Bull Shooter’s Intro League, please stop by Bull Shooters Billiards & Sports Bar at 3337 W. Peoria Ave. and fill out a sign-up slip.

Will a “Blind Draw” Pool Tournament Succeed?Blind draw doubles tournaments are very common in the dart world, but can the “blind draw” concept work in pool?

Bull Shooters is about to find out the answer to that question, as they have scheduled a $500 Added (guaranteed), Open, Blind Draw, Scotch Doubles 8-Ball Tournament for Saturday, April 27 at 12:00 noon.

The entry fee for this tournament will be a mere $15 per player, and play will take place on coin-operated bar tables with teams splitting quarters for each game.

Races will be to 4 games on the winner’s side, and to 2 games on the one-loss side.

The field for this tournament will be limited to 64 players (32 teams). Sign-ups will be taken the day of the tournament, but early sign-ups will be accepted at the bar for anyone wanting to guarantee a spot.

Scotch Doubles pool tournaments have long been a common thing in Arizona, but Bull Shooters’ tournament will differ in several respects: it offers an unprec-edented amount of added money for a doubles tournament; it is open to all skill levels (even pros); and entrants do not get to select their own partners. Partners will be determined by drawing names out of a hat. That means “luck-of-the-draw” will play an important role in determining the eventual winners in this tournament.

Are you feeling lucky?

I would like to respond to Kevin Arco‘s departing edito-rial as chairman of the highly esteemed Arizona Ratings Committee. First let’s give Kevin all due respect for giv-ing a year of his life to ensure everyone a chance to win when they play in most AZ pool tournaments and or leagues. We all owe him a big thank you…thank you Kevin. I agree with most of what Kevin said in the article but there are a few things I don’t agree with.

One thing I have to disagree with is when he says “nor should a player complain why did they raise me, I haven’t won anything”. If a tourna-ment player were raised with-out ever cashing at their current rating what incentive would they have to keep investing their time and hard earned money in more tournaments. If you can’t cash at your current rating how in the world would

you be able to cash by having to give up another game to your opponents.

With that said lets examine why the AZ ratings system was created in the fi rst place. The system was put in place not to be fair for the player but as a business solution for the league system (Arizona Eight ball Asso-ciation) in place at the time and the local bars that hosted the AEA teams and sanctioned tournaments. It was subjective based system created spe-cifi cally to retain control over player ratings for the benefi t of the businesses involved. The system protected the AEA and bar owner’s interests from shady individuals that tried to rip off their tournaments and leagues. There were no player reps on the committee. Fortunately over the last 25 years even though the AEA is no longer around the system has evolved to put the player’s interest more on par with that of the business owner.

Even though not perfect the ARC was doing a fairly good job until the disas-trous decision was made to lower ev-

eryone’s rating by one. Now when you play in a tournament it is fairly com-mon to encounter a 5 rated player (or two 5’s in scotch) that can break and run a table on you. You leave them open at any point in the game and it’s over. Let’s put that into perspective. You’re two 7 rated players playing scotch against two underrated 5 play-ers racing to handicap –6. You race to 8 while they go to 4. As they are 2 underrated you are effectively giving up 2 games on the wire. The chances of you and your partner winning (un-less you too are underrated) are pretty much nonexistent. Basic logic says that if a rating system is truly fair then a 4 should have just as good a chance to win a tournament as an 8. When have you ever heard of a 4 winning an 8 and under tournament? It should be obvious to anyone who cares to look that the system is slanted towards the higher rated players. In my book that is as it should be as long as the play-ers are rated correctly. There should be some reward for the amount of time the higher rated player has invested to improve their game.

The ideal rating system would protect both the business owner’s interest and give any player a chance to compete on a level playing fi eld in any tournament or league. Unfor-tunately no rating system is perfect but those based on sub-jectivity rather than metrics are the most prone to imperfection. A subjective rating system is one where a qualifi ed person (an expert) observes a player in competition and makes a judg-ment regarding the player’s skill level based on the rater’s knowledge of the sport. I won’t go into what it takes to be qualifi ed but it should be common sense that a 4 or even 5 rated player shouldn’t be able to rate a player at any level. Additionally no rating com-mittee member should ever be able to vote on a players rating that they have never seen play before which is not currently the case. (continued on page 32)

Serrano & Halls Win 480 Scotch

Francisco Serrano and Gary Halls bounced back from a hot-seat loss to Neil Bennett & Emilio Ortega to win the Max & Ted’s 480 March Scotch Doubles event.

Serrano and Halls were on the wrong side of a 5-3 scoreline for the hot-seat, but they took the loss in stride and eliminated the team of Mike Osborne and JB Hart in third place.

The rematch in the finals between Serrano & Halls vs Bennett & Ortega went two sets with Serrano & Halls scoring 6-4 and 6-1 wins for first place.

Final Payouts:

1st Francisco Serrano & Gary Halls $3102nd Neil Bennett & Emilio Ortega $1303rd Mike Osborne & JB Hart $80

Armbrust Wins Main Street Tournament Of Champions

Rick Armbrust defeated Bobby Emmons twice to win Main Street Billiards’ Tournament of Champions on March 30th.

Armbrust’s first win over Emmons came in the match for the hot-seat where he scored a hill-hill 7-7 win.

Emmon’s moved to the one loss side, but that would not be the last that Arm-brust would see of this young gun.

On the left side of the board. Valley newcomer Tim Daniel was doing his best to play up to his temporary 10 rating. Daniel was not on the ratings sheet yet, so was forced to play as a 10 rated player. After a first round loss to Skyler Flaherty, Daniel won five straight matches to earn a shot against Emmons in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, Daniel found out that playing Emmons with no spot is not an easy task, as Emmons won 8-4.

The finals would be a true double elimination 8-7 race between Emmons and Armbrust. Armbrust came out strong with a break and run in the first rack of set 1, but Emmons would soon take control and break a 2-2 tie to take a 5-2 lead. Armbrust would cut Emmons’ lead to 5-4, but Bobby won the next three games for the 8-4 win to force a second set.

The second set saw Emmons take a quick 3-1 lead, but this time it was Arm-brust who fought back to tie things at 4-4. From that point, Emmons would only manage one more rack before Armbrust won the match 7-5 for first place.

Final Payouts:

1st Rick Armbrust $4052nd Bobby Emmons $2303rd Tim Daniel $1004th Jesse Renteria $50

Teri Curtis & John Marquis went undefeated to win Stinger’s scotch doubles event on March 16th, but you might not have known this if you just paid atten-tion to the prize money being handed out.

In the twenty three team field, it was Curtis & Marquis who took the hot-seat with a 5-4 win over Will Sexton & Carlos Chavez,

On the one loss side, it was Doc Rice & Joe Avila who had corrected their ship after a first round loss to Ed Scott & John Ritonya. Rice & Avila were mowing down teams on the left side of the board. After eliminating Pat Schultz & Joe Nicita, Doc & Joe got their revenge over Ed & John.

Next up for Doc & Joe was Will & Carlos and they also fell by the wayside, set-ting up a finals match between Doc & Joe and Teri & John.

Although Teri & John won the final match, they had not bought into any of the side pots. This left them with $380 in first place prize money, compared to Doc & Joe’s $760 payday for second.

Final Payouts:

1st Teri Curtis & John Marquis $3802nd Doc Rice & Joe Avila $7603rd Will Sexton & Carlos Chavez $3204th Ed Scott & John Ritonya $2705th Bill Van Der Weyst & Ken Gouso $1105th Pat Schultz & Joe Nicita $40

Frost Runs Over One Pocket Madness Field

Scott Frost ran over a field of twelve players to win the Bullshooters One Pocket Madness event on March 9th

Frost faced off against Doc Rice for the hot-seat in a handicapped 12-6 match. Frost won the two games by a combined 24-1 score.

On the one loss side, Rod Elliott was facing Jim Galati to see who would take on Rice in the semi-finals. Rod had lost to Oscar Avila, but came back with a win over Billy Garrett. Galati had lost to Doc on the right side of the board, but had already eliminated Tres Kane and Avila on the one loss side.

Galati would end up getting the best of Elliott and would then go on to defeat Rice 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Frost brought his unbeaten streak into the finals and stayed hot with a 3-0 win over Galati for first place.

Young Gets The Win At Kolbys

Eric Young has had a handful of strong finishes at Kolby’s monthly one pocket tournament; but he had yet to taste first place until March.

It was starting to look like a case of deja-vu for Young, as he defeated Bernie Pettipiece in his first match, but then dropped a match to Mike Pankoff.

Young had beat Bernie in his first match last month, only to be eliminated by Bernie, one spot out of the money.

This time, Young watched Tres Kane defeat Mike Pankoff for the hot-seat, and Bernie beat Joe Watson on the one loss side to set up a rematch with Bernie. Things went better for Young this time, as he eliminated Bernie in 4th place.

With that monkey off his back. there was nothing stopping Young as he beat Mike Pankoff 2-0 and then Tres Kane 3-2 in the finals for first place.

Final Payouts:1st Eric Young $2402nd Tres Kane $120

Mike, What makes the Mas-ter Dart league so special, and Why would I want to play in it?

Ok, if I can’t answer this, I can’t answer anything…

To start with, it is hands-down the best dart league in the country. That isn’t just an opinion, but a fact. Yes, some seasons many top players don’t play and we still we have 10 or more players shoot over a 4.0.

I can’t name on two hands and feet the players who have started in the B Division or were lower players who are now Master’s Captains and playing at a top level.

Last week, the season ended and Kenny Wright made a comment that any other league with half the teams being already out of the money, you would have players and teams not show up.

All 32 players showed up and played their hearts out.

Do I know why? Not really, but I can guess. If a person were to watch all four matches being played, I would bet he couldn’t pick out who was playing for 1st and 2nd and who was playing for 5th & 6th or 7th & 8th. They are all playing just as hard to win.

You can’t help but get better in the Master league. You have players who have played for decades who know the game and can teach you the game. You have some young up and coming players who will keep Arizona on the dart map for many years to come.

All in all you have a great group of players who love the game and love to play. I can’t think of a better answer than that.

I may be wrong, but I doubt it….

The Reasons to be Good are Coming

Well, April is a busy month on the dart scene and for all the players that keep saying they are good they should be in-volved in some of these events. Experience leads to you rais-ing your game, and playing the same people everyday does not do that. While playing global matches is a step better, it still is not the same thing as hav-ing to stand next to the guy to shoot for your life in an event.

To truly get a good game you need to play in good events; and the first of such was be-ing held as I write this column. It was the Phoenix Cup held over the Easter Weekend. The problem is that other than Thad, I am not sure one single player from here went out to it? What’s up with that? Here is a step forward in the dart scene and all the big fish stayed home in the pond??

Ok, so the next one is the New World Series held the

first weekend in April so close in Las Vegas you could drive. It is a 2 day round robin event playing each guy in your pool five games, then in to a long format knock-out round for a first prize of $5,000 (keep this number in mind for a later statement in this article) and I am hoping people actually go to it as how else do you get better? I myself would have attended but I was invited to a TV event in Asia called the Super Darts where there were 16 players from around the world competing in a basically winner take all event at the same time (it can be seen April 6th at 9pm AZ and I am the first match on).

They are actually having a few more New World Series events across the USA and Canada so find them online and check them out.

Now I guess the next event this month is the NDA and I think starting out, it is a good event to go get out of your comfort zone for at least the singles and doubles on the first weekend…. the rest of it is just drawn out too long and I think you could use your vaca-tion days for some of the other events

coming up this year that will be way better. Did you know the NDA is only a 100% pay back on your entries? Just saying. I will Actually be at DART-SLIVE The WORLD Stage 1 during this event and will be attending 7/8 stages this year held in 5 different countries so a busy year.

For those involved in the DARTSLIVE Super League there will be the $60,000 Fiesta the first weekend in May and it is loaded with side events, so those that can attend really should come enjoy the party. For those that did not get in the league, well the US Open returns in late Sept and promises to be even bigger than last year so get your entry in early (should open around May).

So what else? Well I am not sup-posed to say anything officially but I can promise you that there is a reason soon to be announced that should have every player that talks about playing top level darts to save their vacation days and travel money for a 4 stop mini tour held here in the USA starting in July. The winner of said tour will get a bonus check in the same amount

that each tour event pays for first and it is over 5x what you could win by winning NDA or the Bullshooter so you do the math. It will truly be pro money and worth to stay tuned for.

Just as a closing thought as to why to go out and practice. Travel to get experience and truly raise your level of game is the total reason for the events that I will play in this year. Now, no one will ever win every event but if you did the winner would take in a cool $333,000 in first prize money and this includes the new American tour coming in July through November, so now go practice!!!!

Amado Wins Kittys 7 & Under

Amado Martinez held off some of the best 6’s in town and won Kitty’s March 7’s & Under 9-ball tournament on March 16th.

Although the tournament was a 7’s and under, it was the 6’s that ran wild in this event. Amado defeated 6 rated Randell Moore for the hot-seat 7-1.

On the one loss side, the only other remaining 7 left in the field - Mike Hower-ton - was being handed his walking papers by John Wells 6-4. At the same time, 6 rated Ernie Turner was eliminating 6 rated John Neal in 5th place.

With three 6’s and one 7 left in the field, Wells eliminated Turner 6-3 and then ran over Randell 6-2 to set up the final match between Wells and Amado.

Wells kept his strong play going with a 6-1 win in the first set of the finals, but Martinez ran away with the second set 7-2 for first place.

Final Payouts:

1st Amado Martinez $3902nd John Wells $2253rd Randell Moore $604th Ernie Turner $35

Moore & Bedore Split With Team Van Der Weyst

Bill Van Der Weyst and his son Cody teamed up to split Kitty’s 12 & Under 9-Ball tournament with Randell Moore & Rick Bedore on March 23rd.

Team Van Der Weyst made their way through the 20 teams and took the hot-seat with a 7-3 win over Joe Nicita and his partner Fred Crowley.

On the one loss side, Randell Moore and Rick Bedore were working their way to the finals the long way. Moore and Bedore lost to Joe & Fred earlier in the event, but had won four straight matches on the left side of the board. They quickly pushed their winning stream to five, with a 7-3 win over Joe and Fred.

Instead of playing out the finals, the two remaining teams agreed on a split for first place.

Final Payouts:1st Bill Vander Weyst & Cody Van Der Weyst $4752nd Randell Moore & Rick Bedore $4803rd Joe Nicita & Fred Crowley $2154th Tim Casey & Mike Wolfe $85

What Would A Sucker Do?

By Jacqueline KarolHouse Pro at DownLo Billiards in Chico, California

If you look around the room and don’t see any suckers….YOU are the sucker!

You are playing 8-ball and have solids here with ball-in-hand. What do you do?

Idea #1: “Hit it really hard and call something somewhere!”

Idea #2: “Combination shot!”

Idea #3: “Bank one of them in!”

Suckers…

Why aren’t these the best ideas?

Idea #1: It is very unlikely that you will pocket a ball let alone guess where it will go.

Idea #2: Combination shots are often unreliable, especially when they are far from the pocket and not lined up or “wired” to the pocket.

Idea #3: Bank shots are also an unreliable, low-percentage option.

Answer:

Although it is tempting to try to run out when given ball in hand, circumstances may not allow that. In this case, there is a very simple and powerful safety hidden in the mess. Play a stop shot behind the cluster while breaking out one ball, taking care not to run into the other balls and possibly selling out. This leaves your opponent a very tough kick shot on the 8-ball, with little chance of winning OR leaving you safe. Now when it is your turn at the table, you will have the option to run out or play another safe. Either way, you have main-tained control of the table and your opponent is left to wait for your next devious move.

Diaz and Perez Win At Groggys

Miguel Diaz and Cee Perez came out ahead of nineteen other teams at Groggy’s 12 & Under scotch doubles event on March 9th.

Diaz and Perez took the hot-seat with a win over Chet Lahti and Mike Roman.

On the left side of the board, Claudia Justis and Selwyn lost to Dale Menghe & Joe Farias, 6-2, to end up in 4th place.

Dale and Joe would then lose to Chet and Mike by the same 6-2 scoreline and bow out in 3rd place.

The finals saw Chet & Mike looking to win two matches against Miguel and Cee, in order to avenge their earlier loss. They would avenge that loss with a 6-4 win in the first set of the finals, but Miguel and Cee would come back and win the second set 5-5 for first place.

Final Payouts:1st Miguel Diaz and Cee Perez $6102nd Chet Lahti & Mike Roman $2303rd Dale Menghe & Joe Farias $105

Groggys Scotch Split

Daniel Jaworoski & Lynor Johnson were the team to beat at Groggys 15 & Un-der Scotch Doubles event on March 3rd, but ended up splitting in the finals.

Daniel and Lynor outlasted twenty three other teams to take the hot-seat with a 5-4 win over Bill Van Der Weyst and JR Ascension.

On the left side of the board, Chris Negrin & Mike Luta had just eliminated Ebony Kelly & Eric Lacey 5-4, but they couldn’t handle Van Der Weyst and Ascension as they lost a hill-hill match 8-4.

The finals would be double elimination with an 8-5 race and Van Der Weyst & Ascension won the first set 8-3 to force a second set.

(What are the fundamentals - Continued from page 13)

Level Cue. No matter which direction a player aims his cue stick the ball will swerve off of the line of aim if the player hits down on it. Not all shots can be hit with a perfectly level cue, however, but you should always hit every shot with the cue being as level as possible.

Stay Down. Straight alignment and a level cue won’t mean squat un-less everything is held in place until the cue ball is well on its way to its destination. Even the slightest body movement (other than the stroking arm moving straight forward) will pull the shot off line and cause you to miss.

Follow Through. Stroke the tip all the way through the cue ball to en-sure that the desired action is imparted to the cue ball. Some shots may require a short follow-through, while other shots may require a longer follow-through, but all shots require some sort of follow-through. Fol-lowing through the cue ball also helps you to stay down on the shot.

You can help yourself remember The Fundamentals by memorizing the following little poem.

With straight alignmentand a level cue,I will stay downand follow through.

Yeah, yeah, I know. It’s cornball. But it works.

(Open letter continued from page 15)Kevin says he doesn’t get it but does makes an interesting point when he states “I don’t want to get raised” is the most common phrase in every pool room/bar he’s been in. It’s real simple! Nobody likes loosing! Players don’t want to get raised because they know that the underrated players dominate in competition. They don’t want to get raised because they know that until they are underrated again their chances of winning again are slim to none.

Some problems with a subjective rating system:House raises player because they place and don’t spend money.House won’t raise player who spends a lot of money.House raises player because other players complain.TD doesn’t want to raise player because they are friends.TD doesn’t want to raise player because player tips them money when they win.Committee member votes to raise player because they lost to them in a match.Committee member votes to raise player without ever seeing them play.Committee member votes to raise an 8 to a 9 while they are only rated a 5.

How do we get rid of this problem of an unfair subjective rating system? Again it’s simple…we move to a metric based rating system. When it comes to billiards there are just too many intangibles for a subjective system to be either effective or fair. When we see the same winning faces in the local billiards publications all the time we know something in the system should change. Metric systems are based on a player’s performance results and are not infl uenced by politics, business deci-sions, unqualifi ed raters or friendship. Metrics don’t lie.

It’s not a player’s knowledge of the sport that should determine their rating but rather their ability to win against their peers. What difference does it make if I know 2 and 3 rail shape, diamond systems, can kick, bank and have a hell of a break if lower rated players are still beating me.

How would it work? Bars that use the rating system turn in their tour-nament results to the committee on a monthly basis only reporting the handicap, number of players for each tournament and who placed in the money. If a player places in the money too much they get raised. How much is too much? The pool player community could easily vote on how much a player can win before they are raised. If a player who you feel is underrated doesn’t cash in a tournament then their rating doesn’t matter, as they were never a threat to the money. If they put you out of the tournament then obviously you weren’t a threat to the money either.

If a league uses the ratings they would turn in the player rating and position results at the end of each season. For example if a 6 rated player in league is winning more than the other 6’s and or some of the 7’s then it is easy to see they need to be raised or placed on the watch list. While this would not be a perfect system it would be far better than what we have today. If a player gets raised and hasn’t been able to cash in 6 months to a year they could petition the committee to be lowered to their old rating. Gone would be the politics, dishonesty and unqualifi ed unethical player raises of the past.

We could just get rid of the ratings systems completely but let’s face it…without a ratings system in place the pool scene in Arizona would be abysmal. The only way the system will change is if enough players complain!
