GUIDING LIGHT ST. MARY MYSTICAL ROSE

We the faithful of St. Mary Mystical Rose Parish are a Catholic Community in the Archdiocese of Detroit. We serve God through His Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, with the empowerment and the

strength of the Holy Spirit: to celebrate the Holy Sacraments and Worship, Christian Service and Faith Education, to evangelize and practice our faith in active stewardship--with the faith, spirit

and humility of Mary, the Rose of God and our Patron Saint.

January 8, 2017—Epiphany of the Lord

SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD

Today’s Holy Gospel according to Matthew 2:1-12, is the

inauguration of the Son of God. God has revealed to the

nations His only begotten Son. This was during the time of

King Herod sometime in AD 85. By this time some of the

Jewish Christians community seemed open to Gentiles mis-

sion.

At this time Jewish Christians came to believe that Jesus

was the promised Messiah through whom God inaugurated

the final age of salvation. However, many Jews had not ex-

pected the Gentiles could include the Jewish purity laws of

the first century, prohibited all contact with non-Jews.

Yet, the Apostle Paul devoutly preached that God’s plan of

salvation fulfilled in Christ, offered God’s gracious love to

all, Jews and Gentiles alike. By the time of Matthew’s writ-

ings many Gentiles had come to faith in Christ.

Thus, Matthew proclaimed the inauguration of Jesus born in

Bethlehem of Judea during the reign of King Herod. The

magi were the three kings from the east arrived in Jerusa-

lem searching for Jesus.”Where is the newborn king of the

Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him

homage?”

Matthew reported that the magi had led by the star until it

stopped over the place where Jesus was, and found Him

with Mary His mother, [and perhaps Joseph His father].

They prostrated, meaning profound bow and homage. The

three magi brought treasures of gold (representing the roy-

alty of the king), frankincense (the holy and royal aroma),

and myrrh (the holy oil of embalming). The magi were

warned by a dream not return to King Herod and they did.

As we celebrate the Solemnity and Holy Feast Of The

Epiphany Of The Lord,” the revelation of God’s coming of

salvation for His people, let us ponder and reflect on, the

importance of living in the life of Jesus or God’s life. God

bless you!

NEO-CATECHUMENS – FEBRUARY 4th – 5th, 2017

The Team called Neo-Catechumens will visit our Parish

on Saturday at 4:30pm Mass, and 9:30am Sunday Mass

on the above dates.

We will have a Soup-dinner and a breakfast in the morn-

ing and they will answer questions regarding to the Neo-

Catechumen Catechesis they will bring in our Parish.

Please plan ahead to attend and it is going to refresh and

educate your faith in our Lord and God as our New

Year’s journey!

Have a wonderful week and may the Holy Feast of the

Epiphany of our Lord strengthens and empowers our be-

lief and trust in Jesus Christ. Amen.

THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR CHRISTMAS

WISHES, GIFTS, CARDS, AND COOKIES

Thank you for all your well wishes on Christmas and the

New Year and with all the outpouring of gifts and love.

You are always in my prayers and thoughts for a wonder-

ful New Year and a new start of our journey with the

Lord. May His Peace and Shalom, I pray, for your good

health, goodwill, and prosperity this wonderful year.

May our Lord Jesus Christ showers His blessings upon

you, keep you always, and shine His holy face on you.

God bless you!

We’re following Pope Francis’ directive to “Go

and Make a Loud Noise for the Lord”

From the Faith Formation Team

Happy New Year. As we conclude our celebration of the Christ-mas season, we will begin to celebrate Ordinary Time.

Some Reminders:

Classes for Faith Formation resume on January 10 (K-6) and

January 12 (7 & 8), 2017.

Faith Formation challenge – This week our children will vote on how to allocate the donations to Food for the Poor Animal drive. We thank everyone who has contributed to this activity.

Next week, on Tuesday January 17, we will be sharing the Nar-thex space with the Knights of Columbus as they are sponsoring a blood drive with the American Red Cross. Please have your children enter through the “East/West” doors closest to Ar-mada Ridge Road for our faith formation classes. Also, we will dismiss from the church, so please use the “East/West” doors for pick up at dismissal time. Please consider donating blood during the K of C blood drive. Although walk-ins are welcome, appointments may be scheduled by calling 1-800-733-2767

(sponsor code Kofcarmada). Give blood, give life.

Also, in 2017 we will be re-starting the Education Commission. I am seeking 5-10 people who are willing to give 1-2 hours a month to assist in the planning of our parish’s teaching mission to assist each parishioner, from youth to mature learners, to grow in faith throughout life. Please call or email me if you feel called to this ministry.

Wishing you all the peace of Christ in this New Year.

Denise Coordinator , Religious Education 586-784-5966 ext 106

Starting in January, we are asking that the children of

the parish bring a non-perishable item for donation to

the Food Pantry up to the altar during collection time.

There will be a basket on the apron of the altar to collect

their donations. THANK-YOU for your help.

TIME & TALENT CORNER Sacristan

Under the direction of the pastor this individual undertakes the

preparation of liturgical celebrations, including all that is needed for

special days such as Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday. The Sacris-

tan arranges the books required for specific celebration and is respon-

sible for setting out all Sacred Vessels and elements used for Mass. In

addition, the Sacristan is responsible for making sure that the church

building is unlocked, and that the lights and sound system are turned

on. He or she ensures that any essential items necessary for worship

are always available. At the completion of Mass, the Sacristan makes sure that the church is

secure and that lights, fans and the sound system are turned off. For

special sacramental celebrations such as baptisms and funerals, the

Sacristan works with the Celebrant to be sure that all the elements

needed for the celebration are ready and available. The Sacristan is

the behind-the-scenes person who makes sure that the celebrant has

everything needed to celebrate the liturgy. Volunteers typically are

responsible for an assigned Mass for an entire month, rotating with

other volunteers throughout the year. Sacristans are given extensive

training for their very important duties. If you would like more information about this ministry, call the parish

office 586-784-5966.

Ushers/Greeters:

When you visit the home of a dear friend or a beloved family mem-

ber, chances are you are welcomed at the door with a warm smile, a

friendly “hello” and maybe even a hug or a handshake. When you

visit our church, the house of God, you are greeted similarly. The

members of our Usher/Greeter ministry serve an important role in

our parish. They are the first people you see upon entering our

church building. The ushers and greeters welcome parishioners to

Mass and assist with seating people as needed; they help those with

special needs and make sure there is plenty of reserved seating for

families at special sacramental events such as baptisms. Additionally,

they take up the collection at the offertory; help coordinate the offer-

tory procession and direct people during Communion. At the end of

Mass, the Ushers and Greeters distribute the bulletins and any other

materials as people are exiting. This is an ideal ministry for couples

and families who are looking for a ministry to serve in together.

Arts & Liturgical Environment

We are seeking parishioners who are creative in decorating to be a

part of our Liturgical Environment team. Volunteers are needed to

help several times a year to decorate the Church and Narthex for the

Seasons of the Church year: Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time,

Lent, The Triduum and Easter & Pentecost. This involves making

flower arrangements that go along with the Liturgical Season and

changing the colors of the environment. If you are gifted in the area

of decorating and are creative, here is your opportunity to put your

God given talent to good use. Don’t keep it hidden under a bushel

basket. Let it shine forth for all to see.

If you would like more information about this ministry, call the parish

office at 586-784-5966.

If you are interested in learning more about any of

these ministries
