Dear Chelsea Families, Welcome to the season of thankfulness and reflection. The month of November is the perfect time to thank those that contribute to our lives in various ways, and to reflect on how fortunate we are to be part of such a wonderful school district. At Chelsea School, we will be thanking our veterans by hosting a Veterans Day Assembly on November 10th. The week of November 13th is American Education Week. We will be thanking and honoring our teachers and paraprofessionals for all they do for our students and our schools. Here are a few of the things that we are grateful for at Chelsea School: * Our students, for the inquisitiveness and enthusiasm they bring to learning each day. * Our families, for their dedication to supporting the schools, and sending their children prepared to be mathematicians, authors, readers, critical thinkers, engineers, technologists, scientists, musicians, artists, and problem solvers! * Our Frankfort Community, for providing a growing, vibrant place to live. * Our dedicated and professional staff, for selflessly giving 110% to our students each day. * Our district personnel, for establishing a strong vision of excellence. * Our Board of Education, for their endless support in ensuring that all our learners have the tools necessary to succeed. Please call 469-2309 to report a student absence. For your convenience, a telephone answering service has been installed at each school to receive your student absence call. Your call should be made by 8:00 A.M. the day of the absence or tardiness. Please provide the student’s name, grade, reason for absence or tar-diness, and the name of the person calling. (If the student is absent due to illness, please include the symptoms – specify illness.) When writing a note for an early dismissal, please include the reason that your student is leaving early.

If you are changing your child’s mode of transportation for the day, please send a note in the morning. The teacher will be aware of the change and forward the communication to the office. If you have forgotten to send written notification, please call the office before noon, unless it is an emergency. If you call too late in the day, it becomes dif fi-cult to notify the teacher and child before dismissal.

Mrs. Freiberg’s 4th grade ELA writing class created spooky stories for the annual Halloween Spooktacu-lar. The students created, word processed, revised, edited, and illustrated their pieces to get ready for the “Spooktacular”. They loved this creative writing unit! The students used mentor texts to learn the elements of a scary story. They then used those mentor texts to in-fluence their own writing. Some of the stories were pretty creepy! To add to the ambience the students brought in flashlights to use while reading with the lights off. Add in some spooky music and that was a recipe for a spooky event!

This past month, the students worked on several activities. Football kept us active with passing, receiving, and punting. Students had fun playing End-Line Football with a center, quarterback, and receiver scoring points for each completed pass. Soccer was another fun unit of dribbling, passing, and shooting at the net. The unit culminated with games of Alley Soccer as students took turns on offense and de-fense for some fun competition.

Students completed their physical fitness testing for the fall, which included strength, endurance, and flexi-bility. Testing consisted of: sit ups, push-ups, Pacer test, long distance jog, and the sit and reach. Students will be tested again in the spring as we will look for improvement throughout the year. We ended the month with our P.E. game show: Stay out of Jeopardy – a Halloween Safety Program that has become an annual event here at Chelsea. This fun game show helps in teaching the students ways to stay safe around the neighborhood, not only at Halloween, but every day. KEEP SAVING BOX TOPS for EDUCATION! ! ! Chelsea earns 10 cents for every box top turned in to the Box Top for Education program. The students have been bringing them in diligently for the past few months and they are adding up quickly. Please continue to send them in to us. We thank you for your contin-ued support with this program. “Stacking the Stock” – Chelsea to help set a new World Record for Guinness! Chelsea Students will again join stackers around the world as we cup stack on Thursday, November 9th, to try to beat the record for the most people stacking in one day. Along with the Guinness competition, we are asking students to bring in canned goods to help stock the shelves of the Frankfort Township Food Pantry. To join the 2 programs together, Chelsea students will also be “Stacking the Stock” of canned goods we col-lect. Please send canned goods in to school with your students for this fun event! Collection will begin October 30th.

All students will practice singing patriotic songs this month. We will focus on singing with good posture, breathing technique, and diction. We will also be analyzing melody lines and how they move: step, leap, and repeat. We will play melodies with boomwhackers and/or tone chimes. 3rd grade students will end the month discussing tone color and exploring different unpitched percussion instruments. Students will be reading rhythmic notation.

4th grade students will play treble clef games to practice reading the notes that they will be playing on the recorder. 5th grade students will compose a short rhythm piece in small groups and will select an unpitched instrument to play it on, for classroom performance.

In November, fifth grade students will review symmetry and learn about art from other cultures, while designing a mask. Students will be using tempera paint on this project. They will experience mixing color and creating texture with brushstrokes. Although our paint is washable, be sure to wear old clothing on painting days. Fourth grade just finished a great drawing of their shoes. They are truly fantastic. In November, students will learn about the American Folk art of quilting. Each student will make a paper quilt block using geometric shapes, symmetry, and radial balance. We will use a variety of water color techniques to make patterned papers that will be included in our designs. All of the blocks will come together for a collaborative de-sign, filled with the repetition of shape and color.

Third grade students recently learned that the word “profile” can have different meanings. Each student used a profile photograph and a variety of lines to create this very unique work of art. Be sure to ask your third grade students what came out of their mouth in art class this week. It can be seen but not heard.

By Mrs. Jozaitis Students are working collaboratively to design, test and redesign. They persevere to get through problems they encounter. Students are finding ways to communicate to their partners in positive ways. Third graders are testing their Maglev cars. The magnets on the cars repel the track, gravity pulls the car, and the students test for the speed of the car. Students change one thing on their design and test

again hoping to find that their car’s speed increased. Fourth graders have done some measurement of their Eco Wind Gen and tested their product for voltage created. Students noticed that the pitch of the blades affects its performance. After redesigning students test again in hopes that their Wind Gen’s voltage has increased. Fifth graders are testing their Sky Eagle for distance or range traveled. They realized their design construc-tion affects the Sky Eagles performance. After some modifications are made students test again hoping their vehicle travels a longer distance. Fifth graders are completing their lab report in One Note.

We are wrapping up our “We Are Chelsea” school unit in Spanish class. We

have been working on a short writing assignment where students share infor-

mation about Chelsea (like the names of their teachers and their favorite sub-

jects). We will be starting unit 2, “Let’s Celebrate,” in November. Students

will build a foundation of useful calendar vocabulary and phrases. They will

use this toolkit as they learn about festivals in the Spanish-speaking world. In

addition to this, students will learn vocabulary related to birthday parties. Stu-

dents will have the opportunity to compare birthday celebrations in the Span-

ish-speaking world with their own celebrations in Frankfort. Unit resources are posted on the Spanish classroom webpage. Students are always encour-

aged to supplement their learning with the online resources.

November Health News

November is Diabetes Awareness Month – Talk to your health care provider about the risk factors in your family, take precautions, & support the people you know with Diabetes! Continue to say “ BOO” to the Flu! – This year, the Centers for Disease Control advise everyone 6 months of age and older to get a flu shot during the months of October and November. Talk to your doctor. Please keep all sick children home from school especially if they are exhibiting respiratory and stomach symptoms! If you are unsure – stay home and call your health care provider. Allergy & Asthma season is hitting us HARD this year. Monitor all symptoms closely and follow your health care provider’s advice. If your child has asthma, it is extremely important to keep an inhaler at school. We can protect and strengthen our own immunity by eating nutritious foods, taking daily walks, sleeping 8 –10 hours a night, reducing stress, and smiling daily : ) Vision and Hearing Screening will take place here at Chelsea on Nov 6th and 7th. All 3rd graders will be tested for hearing as required by state law. The following other stu-dents will be tested for vision and hearing in regulation of the Illinois Department of Public Health: special education, teacher referrals, and any new student to the District. If your child is screened and there are any difficulties, you will be notified.
