DEAR PARISHIONERS:

This weekend, we hear St. Paul assure the church of Corinth that the Holy Spirit will see them through any changes or trials they endure by giving gi s to all the believers, gi s whose purpose is to build up the body of Christ. I hope you will find St. Paul an encouraging voice, as together, we face changes at the Catholic Community of San Luis Rey. As I assume you might have already heard, at the Chapter mee ng, I was elected Provincial. This job starts immediately. Fr. Tom West, OFM will become ac ng pastor and Kathleen Flanagan will become ac ng Execu ve Director. As I look back over my me at Mission San Luis Rey Parish, I am humbled by the kindness you’ve shown me. O en, parishioners have told me they are praying for their parish priests, or praying for their Franciscan brothers. This has meant so much to me. I know that my life and ministry have been made easier and more frui ul because of those kind parishioners praying for me. I've enjoyed the fruits of the hard work and the hos-pitality of all our ministries, volunteers and ethnic communi es who've shared meals, stories and their lives with me. I've enjoyed all the special celebra ons -- birthdays, holy days, you name it. If there's one thing we know how to do well at Mission San Luis Rey Parish, it is gathering together to pray, celebrate and eat. All the offers of help, folks volunteering their me and talent, and those parishioners who stepped for-ward in Stewardship to support the parish have all been a great help. But of all these blessings, nothing has made me happier than to see the numbers of pa-rishioners increase as we celebrate Mass together or join in the Sacrament of Confession or Eucharis c Ado-ra on. Love for our Lord Jesus Christ is the heart and soul of everything we do here. Please know that each one of you have made a differ-ence in my life and the life of our parish communi-ty. Leaving is hard, but it's part of what being a Fran-ciscan Friar is about, being open to the Holy Spirit and available to serve all the people of God. God bless each one of you. Know that I will keep you in my prayers, and I ask that you pray for me too as I step out on this new journey in Christ Jesus.

Fr. David Gaa Provincial

A QUOTE FROM POPE FRANCIS

How many mes do we hear: 'Come on, you Chris ans, be a li le bit more normal, like other people, be reasona-ble!' This is real snake charmer's talk: 'Come on, just be like this, okay? A li le bit more normal, don't be so rig-id ...' But behind it is this: 'Don't come here with your stories, that God became man!' The Incarna on of the Word, that is the scandal behind all of this! We can do all the social work we want, and they will say: 'How great the Church is, it does such good social work." But if we say that we are doing it because those people are the flesh of Christ, then comes the scandal. And that is the truth, that is the revela on of Jesus: that presence of Jesus incarnate.” ― Encountering Truth: Mee ng God in the Everyday

IT IS EASY TO LOVE THOSE WHO LOVE US

It is easy to be generous with those who give to us. Showing mercy to the people closest to us is not a chal-lenge. The life of Jesus calls us to a different path. His path led to Calvary, to a hill. It is an uphill journey that is not always easy. As Catholics, we are bap zed into a fam-ily that values the example Jesus set for us. He pro-claimed mercy to those on the fringes of society. It is usu-ally easy to iden fy people who inwardly cry for mercy. The challenge of the Gospel is to proclaim that mercy to those in most need. These people ought to always be our first priority. Pope Francis wants this to be the year when we re-member that our God is a God of mercy, a God of love and compassion, a God who forgives all and always for-gives. God’s mercy is for everyone; no one is exclud-ed. This week, let us live together the Extraordinary Jubi-lee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. The year began on 8 December 2015, the Feast of the Immaculate Concep on, and will conclude on 20 November 2016, the Feast of Christ the King. Come to the Old Mission Church and walk through our Holy Doors in this Jubilee Year. In-vite your friends and family to step through what Pope Francis calls ‘A door that opens in the Church in order to reach out to those who, for many reasons, are far away.’

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

In today’s second reading, Saint Paul makes a list of gi s dispensed to members of the Chris an community by the Holy Spirit. Each gi bestowed has a specific pur-pose for the person for whom it is intended: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, mighty deeds, prophecy, dis-cernment, tongues, and interpreta on. Good stewards know these gi s are not meant to be kept hidden by the recipient but to be shared with the community and be-yond. As we begin a new year, let us reflect on the gi the Holy Spirit has given to each of us. Do we recognize this gi ? How was it intended that we use this gi ? Are we being good stewards of this gi ?
