REMARKS

Assalamualaikum Wr. Wb.

On behalf of education practitioners in Batu, I am proudly introducing this book, "Shining English". This book brings back the grand slogan of Batu City, Shining Batu. "Shining English" is one of the ways to promote Shining Batu.

Promoting Batu internationally requires a number of preparations, one of which is the readiness of Batu people to use English a crucial means of communication with foreigner tourists, to offer the best services. Proficiency of Batu people in English for communication is the ultimate goal to achieve; one of the efforts is teaching English from the elementary school level. Regarding English is no longer a content subject offered in elementary school, but as an extracurricular activity, teachers in elementary schools are challenged to design interesting activities of teaching English that arouse students' interests to learn. It is then necessary that elementary school teachers be equipped with a handbook for teaching English in extracurricular activity.

This book is, in essence, the handbook for teachers in elementary schools composed by the collaborating lecturers of English Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Muhammadiyah Malang and teachers from SD Punten 2 and SD Tulungrejo 4 Batu. This handbook writing is under the program of community service sponsored by Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Research and Technology, Republic of Indonesia. I highly appreciate the determination and hard works of the team. The spirit to develop Batu City, in this case, in educational aspects is expected to be spread and of inspiration for other education practitioners.

Shining English, a handbook used by teachers for teaching English in Shining Batu, comprises some topics of discussion: Greeting New People, Asking and Giving Directions, Tourist Destinations, From Batu with Batik, Arts and Festivals, etc. It is of the pride that those topics are relevant to local potentials of Batu City. To remark, I do hope that this handbook could be utilized to its maximum use to facilitate English learning and promote Batu City internationally.

PREFACE

2013 Curriculum of Primary Level in Indonesia includes English as an Extra Curricular. It means that the schools have opportunity to manage the activities by themselves. This current situation attracts two schools in Batu East Java to collaborate with the English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang to plan extra curricular activities and compose a book containing materials based on the lesson plan.

SDN Punten 2 Bumiaji and SDN Tulungrejo 4 Bumiaji started the collaboration with the English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang by having some meetings on Material Development training and Lesson Planning advisory times. The collaboration was sponsored by the Directorate Research and Community Services of Directorate General of Higher Education of Indonesia.

The English extra curricular activities and materials developed by the teachers from the two schools are as the examples for all teachers in the schools in conducting the activities at schools. What makes them different from the others is that the extra curricular activities are developed by considering the students' multiple intelligences and the authentic materials. Exposing local potencial of the schools' surrounding makes the extra curricular activities excellent.

At the mean time, the product is only limited to the lesson plans and materials for selected grades. Later on, there is a hope that all teachers are able to develop the complete lesson plans and materials from grade 1 to grade 6 by considering local potentials of Batu.
