Editor, Copper Basin News: On Tuesday, Jan. 3, I drove up to the Hand Me Up Shop in my old faded red pickup. I asked Richard Cain to help me unload my grandfather Stern’s old multi-fold wooden tool chest that had found its way

into my family in the mid-50s. Then, Carolyn Cain said she wanted to talk with me. I commented to her, “What kind of trouble am I in now!”, as we always kid each other. We went into the receiving storage area. She brought out three

satchels, basically early year type briefcases. She asked me if I recognized them. The fi rst one I looked at did not look familiar but the second one did somewhat; the third one had two of my father’s old, unused billfolds in them that I recognized. Carolyn then started counting of $20 bills, about 13 of them. Then, my mind clicked. My father had died in the third week of August but in early summer, he had asked me to get him $260

in cash, so that he could have a neighbor man work on his car. My sister, Linda, and I had looked for the money after his death but were not able to fi nd it. Now, the more than honest Hand Me Up Shop staff had solved our family riddle. Later, that evening, when my sister called from East Tennessee, I related the “fi nd.” She too was surprised. By Mila Lira On Monday night, the Kearny Town Council met to accept the resignation of Town Manager Gary Eide. Eide submitted a hand written letter of resignation on Jan. 3. His request was that the resignation be made effectively immediately.

The request to accept the resignation was approved unanimously by the council. The letter included a comment from Eide: “Thank you all for the wonderful experiences and for allowing me to serve the community of Kearny.” Mayor Debra Sommers explained during the

meeting that according to Town Code in the absence of a Town Manager the Mayor will act as the Town Manager. She explained that she was unable to fulfill the duty as the Town Manager due to her time constraints. She recommended that the council appoint Town Clerk Margaret

Gaston as the Interim Town Manager until the town can hire a new manager. The Council voted unanimously to appoint Gaston as the interim manager. Mayor Sommers assured the council and the public that she will work closely with Gaston to keep projects moving and attend all of

the meetings that the town needs to attend. There were no comments made by the Mayor, Council or staff as to why Eide suddenly resigned or well wishes to Eide. Mayor Sommers did explain to the Copper Basin News that because this is a personnel matter there would not be a

public statement made regarding the resignation. Eide served as the Town Manager for 14 years. He started as the Manager in 1997. Gaston has been an employee of the town since 1989. She first started out in the public works department and became the Town Clerk in 1996.

FLORENCE – With the interior demolition complete and the architectural design finalized, the next and biggest step of the renovation of the 1891 Courthouse is now underway – interior construction. “Considering the age of this building, it will be a very sensitive project. It is not typical of our past projects where we build from the ground up. You have to plan this properly, it means taking extra

care during demolition and construction but this is an exciting time,” said construction project manager Archie Carreon. Crews from Concord General Contracting in Mesa arrived Tuesday morning, ready to give the historic structure a new lease on life. The renovation comes at a time when Pinal County will need space for five supervisors, their offices and meeting chambers. Arizona State Statute 11-211(A) requires counties

to have five elected supervisors once they have a population of 175,000 or more, as determined by the US Census Bureau. Pinal County’s 2010 Census population was 375,770. In addition to the interior construction, crews will also be improving the utilities, paving new parking spaces around the building and installing new curbs and gutters. Looking over the blueprints of the renovation, Carreon said that crews will be busy

throughout most of the year getting the building ready for its 2013 debut. Work on the courthouse is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. “There are three aspects of this courthouse that will make an immediate impression on people,” Carreon said. “One is the grand staircase at the entrance of the building. People will notice it and the high ceilings when they walk into the courthouse. Next is the complete rebuilding of

the ceremonial courtroom on the second floor. Finally, the new Board of Supervisors hearing room will be much larger. The seating capacity will grow to 126 people, nearly double what the current hearing room will hold.” Carreon added that some of the original interior highlights will be kept for all to admire.“For example, in the Supervisors’ hearing room we will have all the original brick exposed. Windows from the old jail

cells, complete with bars, will be on display as well.” There will also be the modern necessities included to make this 19th century building fit into the 21st century. “All the modern conveniences will be included in the renovation,” Carreon said. “Full insulation, up-to-date air conditioning, fire suppression and alarm equipment, new wiring, contemporary lighting and we will be ADA compliant with a new elevator.”

The 2012 Waste Dis-posal Voucher Program, originally announced by Pinal County Board of Su-pervisor’s Chairman Pete Rios as beginning Jan. 16 is slated instead to begin on Jan. 17, due to a county holiday. Each voucher, which is meant as a replacement for the free dump days that used to occur, will allow the person who obtains the

voucher to redeem it at the landfill or transfer station and dispose of residential debris. This can be done at the Dudleyville Landfill, located on Highway 77 in Dudleyville or at the Oracle Transfer Station, 2100 East Oracle Transfer Station Road. Residents who need vouchers can obtain them at the Board of Supervi-sor’s office, 118 South

Catalina in Mammoth, by bringing in a current utility bill showing service ad-dress and name as proof of residency. “Use the blue recycling bins to dispose of your re-cyclables. Use the voucher for those items that are not recyclable.” Chair-man Rios says, reminding residents on how to use the vouchers most effectively. If you need more infor-

courthouse renovation underway On January 12, 2011, the Board of Supervisors approved the renovation of the courthouse.

The course of action replaced an earlier plan to build a 10,000 square foot building to house

the county’s Human Resources Department as well as remodeling Administration Building

A to accommodate two more supervisors and staff. The anticipated cost of the earlier project was $3.2

million. The decision by the Supervisors meant that a one-time infusion of $2.8 million dollars would be needed to complete the renovation. The Arizona Historical Advisory Commission has designated the 1891 Courthouse Renovation Project an official

Centennial Legacy Project. To keep up on the progress of the 1891 Courthouse renovation, log onto (shortened URL): http://goo.gl/S5Rta. This site contains news about the renovation and videos documenting key milestones in the renovation.

Instead, use homemade or natural products. Remember -- you don’t need to dirty up the planet when you clean your clothes.

By Steve YurekPastor, Kearny SBC Since this is the first “Pastors Corner” in a long time I thought I would take a look at a topic that has filled libraries with books written to answer these two questions: (1) “What is the purpose of the church?” and “What is the church?” And before you answer that question, think about the ways we use the word ‘church’:“I go to church on Sunday.” “I am on the church board.” “How many un-churched kids attend youth group?” “Put on your church clothes.” Judging by those four statements, the church is a location, an organization, a social status and a style of clothing. When Jesus said in Matthew 16:18, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it” - was that what He was talking about? Hmmm….Acts 11:22 – “News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.” Acts 12:5 – “So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.” Acts 14:27 -”On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them” Romans 16:5 – “Greet also the church that meets at their house.” The church is people. God’s people. People who belong to the kingdom of God. We are the many parts which make up the body of which Christ is the head. 1 Corinthians 12:27-28 says “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it. Here are some of the parts God has appointed for the church: first are apostles, second are prophets, third are teachers, then those who do miracles, those who have the gift of healing, those who can help others, those who have the gift of leadership, those who speak in unknown languages.” The church is not a building. It is not a social club. It is not a charitable organization. It’s not a program. And it’s certainly not a style of clothes! The church is just people.

Pastor’s Corner We are the church simply because we belong to the kingdom of God. So…When was the last time you worked

on YOUR own personal church building? Don’t you think it is time you looked at your own individual church

foundation and make sure that it will support what you are building on top of it?God Love You!

By Vicki Clark When Kearny resident Carolyn Cain takes down her Christmas decorations it takes 38 totes and more than a couple of weeks to store them all away. That’s no type-o folks, yes 38 totes. And a whole storage shed. Decorating for Christmas has been what she calls a hobby of hers for many years. And it all started with a salt and pepper shaker set given to her by her future husband, Richard, when she was 15. She started collecting slowly in the beginning but it was in the last 30 years she says got getting really “stupid” about it. “I love Christmas; it’s my favorite time of the year,” Carolyn said. And her home defi nitely shows it with a mind boggling display of holiday cheer. Every room in the house, including the bathrooms, is fi lled with her vast collection of everything related to the season. There’s not one fl at surface not sporting some kind of treatment, every niche, every wall, even the curtains are decorated. There are snow people, sleds, candles, stuffed animals, a vast collection of nutcrackers, many

nativity scenes and lots more. But somehow the house doesn’t seem cluttered; it’s kind of like visiting a Christmas boutique. “This year’s theme was stockings. Don’t know how many we put up, but it was a lot,” Carolyn said. So how and when do you approach the whole decorating idea for the holiday season? “First we have to unpack the totes and we have piles of stuff sitting everywhere. This usually begins right after Thanksgiving.” Carolyn is also a collector of many other things including birdhouses, cups and saucers, chickens, black and white cows, ladies hats and various other fi gurines. “All this stuff has to be taken down and stored in the totes that we just emptied,” she said. Then she just starts putting things up. “I really don’t have a rhyme or reason to this madness when I begin, I sit and study, readjust and move things around…my husband has a good heart and is willing to help me put things where I want them.” Does Richard offer any

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden Junior High Lobo and Lady Lobo basketball teams, with the support of the administration and many volunteers, decided to bring back their holiday basketball tournament that had been absent from their schedule for the last two years and what a great tournament it turned out to be. Teams from Cibecue Junior High, San Carlos Junior High and the Mountain Vista teams from Oracle joined the Lobo teams for some great basketball this past weekend. The tournament started on Friday at 1 p.m. with the teams in a round robin format to decide seeding for Friday’s single elimination bracket play. The Lady Lobos opened play on the Junior High court losing to a very good Lady Wildcat team from Cibecue with a score of 13 to 24. On the high school court, the Lobo eighth grade boys team took on a running Braves team from San Carlos Junior High falling behind by 12 points going into the fourth quarter but made a furious comeback attempt in the fourth that came up short losing the game 21 to 28. The next set of games had the Lady Cougars of Mountain Vista taking on the tournament favorites the Lady Braves of San Carlos and they showed why they were favored running over the Lady Cougars with a 4 to 37 score. On the high school court, a scoreless third quarter caused the host Lobos to lose to the Cibecue Wildcats with a score of 23 to 27. The next games had the Lady Wildcats of Cibecue taking on the scrappy Lady Cougars of Mountain Vista.

Mountain Vista proved to be too much for the Lady Wildcats handing the Cibecue team a 32 to 20 defeat. On the high school court, the San Carlos boys team had their way with the Mountain Vista Cougars handing them a lopsided 46 to 16 defeat. The fourth games of Friday’s schedule had the Lady Lobos taking on the powerful Lady Braves of San Carlos on the Junior High court with the Lady Braves flexing their muscle again to a tune of 18 to 33 to hand the Lady Lobos their second defeat of the round. On the high school court, the Cibecue Wildcats ran over the Cougars of Mountain Vista with a score of 36 to 19. The fifth games of the tournament had the San Carlos Lady Braves again showing their power by running over the Lady Wildcats of Cibecue with a score of 35 to 9 to earn the number one seed in Saturday‘s bracket portion of the tournament. One of the most exciting games of the tournament took place next on the high school court when the Wildcats of Cibecue took the Braves of San Carlos into overtime with a tie score of 33 to 33. When the buzzer went off to end the overtime period, Cibecue had handed the Braves a 37 to 34 defeat to earn the number one seed in the boys’ bracket play with San Carlos claiming the number two seed. The final games of Friday’s schedule had Mountain Vista taking on the Lady Lobos. The Lady Lobos had trouble finding the basket losing the game to the Lady Cougars by a score of 13 to 25 to give the Lady Cougars the number

two seed in bracket play dropping the Cibecue Lady Wildcats to the number three seed with Hayden getting the number four seed and another game against the Lady Braves on Saturday morning. On the high school court, the Hayden Lobos held back the Mountain Vista Cougars with a 29 to 24 score to get the number three seed with the Cougars seeded fourth in Saturday’s bracket play. Saturday’s bracket play started with the Lady Lobos of Hayden taking on the high flying Lady Braves of San Carlos. The Lady Lobos, unable to find the bottom of the basket, soon found themselves in a deep hole falling behind 1 to 15 after a quarter of play and would not recover getting eliminated with a score of 12 to 39. The San Carlos win placed them in the championship game awaiting an opponent. The first game of bracket play for the boys had number four seed Mountain Vista taking on the number one seeded Cibecue Wildcats. With a tie score after three quarters of play at 19 to 19, the Cougars wanted it more out hustling the Wildcats to hand them their first defeat of the tournament with a score of 31 to 28 to eliminate the Wildcats and send the Cougars into the championship game. The next elimination game in the girls’ bracket had number two seed Mountain Vista taking on the number three seed Cibecue Lady Wildcats in another exciting basketball game. The Lady Wildcats pulled out to an 18 to 11 lead after three quarters of play but they ran out of gas in the fourth quarter scoring only three free

Hayden Junior High hosts holiday hoops tourneyshots while the Lady Cougars poured in 12 fourth quarter points to eliminate the Lady Wildcats with a 23 to 21 score to advance to the championship game where the powerful Lady Braves awaited them. In the second elimination game of the boy’s bracket, number two seed San Carlos took on the number three seed Hayden Lobos. The Hayden Lobo team gave it all they had but it was not enough when two low scoring quarters cost them the game losing to the Braves with a score of 27 to 37 to put the Braves in the championship game against the surprising Mountain Vista Cougars. The championship game in the girls bracket turned into a lopsided affair when the tough

defense of the Lady Braves allowed the Lady Cougars only three baskets for the entire game. The Lady Braves had little trouble scoring to take the first place trophy with a 6 to 38 trouncing of the Mountain Vista Lady Cougars. After the second place trophy was handed to the Mountain Vista Lady Cougars and the first place trophy presented to the San Carlos Lady Braves, the all-tournament team for the girl’s portion of the Hayden Junior High Basketball Tournament was named. From Cibecue came Mikelle Ivins, from Hayden Cheyenne Gaona and Lexie Gomez were awarded all-tournament medals. From the runner-up Mountain Vista Lady

Cougars, Barbara Bruno and Jacquelin Moffitt earned all-tournament honors. The champion San Carlos Lady Braves had three all-tournament players earn medals, Mariah Kozie, Adrianna Houses and Sharlene DeClay. The boy’s championship game had the surprising Mountain Vista Cougars taking on the San Carlos Braves. The game was an exciting affair at least for the first half of play that ended in a 14 to 14 tie. The second half of the game was all Braves as they came up big on the defensive side of the court holding the Cougars scoreless for the entire second half to claim the championship trophy of the boy’s bracket with a 31 to 14

In fact, why not take two? The Goat Head Saloon is an independent, underground music venue, located at 2314 S. Country Club Dr. in Mesa, about which is said, on Voice Places (www.voiceplaces.com): “Dude, if you’re like totally looking for some groovy fun, be sure to pilot your old VW microbus on over to the Goat Head. It’s a ‘kind’ bar and grill offering jam-rock and all varieties of live music nearly every night of the week. An array of Americana, bluegrass, and rock groups also take to the colorfully-lit stage

area at this charming wood-paneled bar. Several pool tables are also on the premises should you feel like proving your billiards superiority.” Having won Best Place To Get A Guinness 2003 Best Place to See 2008, Best Open Mic Night 2009 awards, the Goat Head is a quiet legend where the artistic fringe hangs out and the lookie loos gather to watch them, on stage and off. Every week, there are events, such as Tuesday 8 p.m. Acoustic Open Mic hosted by Carey Slade and Friends and Sunday 6 p.m. Blues, Jam and Open

Mic hosted by Dirty Goat Productions, as well as special one-time or limited duration performances. On Jan. 20, Matthew David Solis, son of John and Samantha Solis, will be the opening act for his father, John Solis, who is a regular at the Goat Head and a crowd pleaser, in his own right. Richard Galaviz Jr, Latin Comedian and local celebrity, will be emceeing. It’s also Ladies Night, so be sure and show up early, if you want a place to perch. Tickets, on sale now, are $7 pre-sale. “The best tournament of any of them around here,” is set for Saturday, April 21 at SaddleBrooke Ranch West golf course, off mile post 93 on Highway 77, just south of Oracle, according the the Knights of Columbus. The cost of the tournament is $60 if paid by April 7 but $70 after that date and includes a cart and lunch,

according to tournament director John Wahlmeier. “We’d like all of our friends to save April 21 for us and tell their friends what a great time they have at this tournament,” Wahlmeier said. Each year the Knights mix up the awarding of prizes so more than just the top teams get top prizes

according to Wahlmeier. “Every golfer has a chance to win a really great prize and we also have many, many raffle prizes that help us award high school scholarships,” Wahlmeier added. For more information or to sign up, contact John Wahlmeier at (520) 385-4590 or cell phone (520) 610-1151.

Imagine A Pair Of Glasses That Can Help You See Better!

MACULAR DEGENERATION

Dr. Paul Woolf, OptometristGilbert • Sun City West • Scottsdale • Tucson

www.chismlowvision.com • www.IALVS.com

Ever look through a pair of field glasses or binoculars? Things look bigger and closer, and easier to see. Dr. Paul Woolf is using miniaturized binoculars or telescopes to help people who have decreased vision, to see better.

In many cases, special telescopic glasses can be prescribed to enhance visual performance. He often can help people read, watch TV, and sometimes drive.

Although telescopic glasses cost between $1900-$2500, it is a small price to pay for the hours of enjoyment with better vision and more independence.

advice? “No,” he says adamantly. Although there are several small Christmas trees scattered around the house this year, the big tree was not put up…why? “There wasn’t room,” Carolyn said. “We normally put the big tree in front of the window in the dining room…this year we were hosting Christmas dinner and there was no way I could open up the table and have room for the tree.” By the way she also has a vast collection of ornaments and adds a new one each year. Believe it or not, most of Carolyn’s Christmas collection over the years came not through retail… “I yard sale…you would not believe what you can buy especially in the summertime. People are getting rid of Christmas

stuff they think they don’t need or want.” She related a story involving a manger scene she spotted at a carport sale in the White Mountains. “We drove up and I spotted the scene…I wanted it and asked the gentleman present the price…he didn’t know and said his wife would know, but she wasn’t there…after a discussion, I again asked a price….he said $5 and I practically threw the money at him before the wife could return.” Soon all this stuff will be put away until next year, each tote carefully packed, side by side with towels to protect each precious item until next year. “I’m ready,” Carolyn said, “with this mess to be done until next year.” If you’d like to see more of Carolyn’s decorating, go online to www.copperarea.com. By Mila Lira At press time Copper was being sold at $3.41 per pound, which has remained steady over the past few weeks. A recent check of the websites for local mining companies has revealed that there have not been many new developments, advancements or changes for our regional mines. On January 1, the clock began ticking faster and

louder once again for the Resolution Copper Mining project near Superior. The Southeast Arizona Land Exchange was passed in the US House of Representative in 2011 however the bill still needs approval in the Senate and will need to be signed by President Obama in 2012 if it is going to be approved in the second session of the 112th Congress. Congressman Gosar and

Senators McCain and Kyl remain strong supporters of the bill. If the bill is not passed in the second session Resolution will be forced back to the drawing board to develop a new bill for the next Congress. Curis Resources continues to receive opposition for their in-situ copper recovery project near Florence. In December the Town of Florence Town Council

adopted a resolution that expresses the Town’s opposition and concerns regarding the project. The resolution encourages Federal, State and County agencies to deny any and all permit applications for the Florence Copper Project. The State Land department issued a letter to the Town of Florence discouraging them from passing the resolution. Freeport McMorRan

Mining Reportannounced that they will pay a cash dividend of 25¢ to their shareholders on record as of January 13, 2012. The dividends will be payable on February 1, 2012.

The naming of the all-tournament team for the boys’ bracket was next with Jahine Gregg representing Cibecue, Devin Santa Maria and Emmit Sims representing Hayden. Runner-up Mountain Vista placed Ryan Chavez and Andrew Peru on the team. Representing the champion San Carlos Braves were Tyler Boni, Wilbur Benally and Michael Jones.

Congratulations to all the teams that participated. The tournament turned out to be a huge success for the Hayden Junior High teams and all the teams seemed to enjoy themselves. A huge thank you to all the volunteers that helped make this tournament a success and a huge and enormous thank you to all the organizations that contributed to help with the cost of putting on the tournament so the Hayden Junior High Lobos could make this tournament possible. And let us not forget, all the fans that came out to support their teams and the tournament: thank you. Here’s hoping that the Lobos can have this tournament again next year.
