Dear neighbors, my name is Bill Larsen and I am the pastor at the Southern Baptist Church in Kearny. I became pastor here on Mar. 11. I would like to speak with you in person, sometime, but, until then, please let the latter serve as my interdiction. We at the Southern

Baptist Church would like to reach out into our community and meet the needs that are here, but we must first know what they are. So, we are calling on you to let us know what they are. Please feel free to call 363-9598 or 573-705-8535 and talk with me about it. We really do want to be of service to

all here in Kearny and the surrounding area. We are determined to share God’s love and tell of His wonderful grace which is available to all who will accept it. Also, if you are not going to church somewhere, or,maybe you are going to a morning worship but don’t have an evening

service, come visit us at 6 p.m. on Sunday night. Our service times are 9:30 a.m. for Sunday School, worship at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, and Bible Study on Wednesday night at 7 pm. All are welcome. My God bless this wonderful community,/s/ Bill Larsen

By Georgie [email protected] On Monday, May 6, 2013, I had posted in a Facebook group that I am curious if many people in Kearny had received a letter as I did a few days ago from the San Carlos Apache Tribe; that it was addressed to “OUR NEIGHBOR” in care of my Kearny post office box; that it contained what they said was their reasons for not wanting the Resolution Copper Mine at Oak Flat east of Superior; and that the envelope had the following words written on it (which I believe was a scare tactic on their part): “Please help us avoid an Environmental Disaster in your backyard.” I was hoping there would

be comments of opinions from those who had also received the same letter, and who were familiar of the disagreements taking place. I was hoping to try to find out who, besides myself, was interested enough to try to separate the truth from fiction. Of the over 90 people who read the post, there were only 23 who commented, and among them was from a lady who wrote that had not the mining industry been introduced throughout our Copper Corridor, none of us would be here. The letter can be downloaded and read here: http://bit.ly/17Rjt8X. If you have a comment and would like to share it with our readers, please post it directly to the Copper Area Facebook page

By Nina Crowder The Copper Basin Idol was held at the Hayden-Winkelman Auditorium on Friday, May 10, and winning the contest was Josette Kimmel. Myranda Figueroa was named Junior Copper Basin Idol. This event has been

directed by Martina Burnam for the past eight years. She said this event with others helps to build confidence for our youth. The commentator who kept everything running smooth was Luciano Romero. Julianna Borquez, the

Copper Basin Idol from 2012, started the show by singing The National Anthem. Since winning the Copper Basin Idol last year, she has performed at many local events including Women’s Expo, Fourth of July, Pioneer Days and the recent Pinal County Victims Rights week event in Casa Grande. Borquez has a beautiful voice and it is a pleasure to hear her sing. Julie Meza, the Copper Basin Junior Idol 2012, has performed at many local events including Fourth of July, Women’s Expo, Oktoberfest, Winter Wonderland and Pioneer Days. Julie attends Ray Junior High School and enjoys sports. All participants sang and danced to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” They even had Jordyn

Avelar dressed as a wolf who danced his way through the stage, adding a little fright to get the evening rolling. Nancy Hinojos helped with the choreography to “Thriller.” Jordyn also helped backstage with lights and curtains. The Copper Basin Junior Idol contestants began with Izzy Kimmel singing “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus. Then Myranda Figueroa belted out “Set Fire To The Rain” by Adele. Both these young ladies performed very well dancing and singing across the stage. The Copper Basin Idol contestants were next with Josette Kimmel singing “Done” by the band Perry. Following Josette was Maria Avenetti singing “The Boys” by Girls Generation. These beautiful young ladies have amazing voices and

FLORENCE, AZ – They represent business, farming, education, corrections, law enforcement, public health and other professions. They give tirelessly – each of the 12 logging in excess of 500 volunteer hours per year. But Pinal County’s Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board just got a big statewide thank you from Governor Jan Brewer after they earned the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award in the Small Organization category. The 12 members making up the Community Advisory Board, or CAB, hail from nine different communities and provide essential community support to the juvenile justice system in Pinal County. Their mission is to ensure that the county’s practices reflect the best interest of youth, families, victims and the community. The CAB provides special services to youth on probation and in detention. An annual Youth Summit provided 80 probationers education on topics ranging from health and fitness to substance abuse and domestic violence prevention. “This is a very involved group of volunteers, it’s not just a steering committee – these people are involved with the youth providing mentoring, support and enrichment,” Program Administrator Donna McBride said. “Youth on probation or in detention depend on the involvement of adults who can mentor them and be models of success. No matter how they arrived in the juvenile justice system, our volunteers are there to illuminate the path forward and onward to a successful future.” One of the annual

signature events that the CAB presents is the Mock Trial Competition and it’s the only one of its kind in Arizona. Nearly all of the county’s Superior Court judges volunteer their time for the day while as many as 200 middle school and high school students take over the courthouse. The students learn firsthand about the justice system by being part of it. This year’s event in March marked the 11th annual Mock Trial Competition. Several of the CAB’s other high profile activities include: TALK! Visitors’ Mentoring Program, Probation and Youth Justice Center Incentive Program, Drug Court, Youth Summit and GED graduations. Several years ago, 11 Arizona counties had CABs but many folded due to a lack of state funding. Pinal’s CAB got together to discuss the funding plight. “There was no question in anyone’s mind, this group would carry on their work because it was too important to support the youth of Pinal County,” Program Administrator Donna McBride said. “The work they do on behalf of the young people we serve was too important to let money stand in the way.” “Governor Brewer’s recognition of the value and importance of Pinal County’s Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board is an incredible honor,” said Todd Zweig, Juvenile Court Services Director. “Our volunteers support the juveniles, provide educational value to schools and help initiate community service programs that allow youth in the justice system to repair the damage done by

EASTERN PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – In one of the most community-oriented college graduations in the country, 11 students will receive degrees and certificates during Central Arizona College’s Aravaipa Campus commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. in Eastern Pinal County. The Aravaipa Campus is located at 80440 E. Aravaipa Road, just off of Arizona State Route 77 between Winkelman and Oracle. Ten students will receive degrees, while an 11th will receive a certificate. Each student will be wearing specific

medallions, stoles and cords signifying the programs with which they are affiliated. Students wearing gold medallions are graduates of the honors program, while those wearing gold stoles are members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. Students wearing blue cords are graduates of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) program, while those wearing red cords belong to CAC’s TRIO student success program and students donning silver stoles are members of CAC’s Student Leadership Organization. Graduates also will wear Joe Pyritz

San Manuel native Joe Pyritz will serve as speaker at Aravaipa Campus graduation May 17

various tassels depending on the degrees that they are receiving. Those with white tassels are receiving associate of arts degrees, while those wearing gold tassels are earning an associate of science degree. Associate of business degree recipients will sport drab tassels, associate of applied science will wear green, associate of general studies will wear gray, and those earning certificates will don blue tassels. Serving as the commencement speaker for the ceremony is Joe Pyritz, a 1983 graduate of CAC and a native of San Manuel, Ariz. Pyritz is the communications and community relations administrator for Pinal County, a post he has held since 1999. Prior to taking on his current role with the county, Pyritz could be seen on televisions across Tucson as a reporter and fill-in anchor for the city’s ABC affiliate KGUN-TV During his tenure as part of KGUN’s news team,

Pyritz earned an award from the Associated Press, an accolade he is quick to recognize as a team award. He also was a bit of a trailblazer, becoming Tucson’s first multimedia journalist. This meant that he had to shoot, edit and report his own stories, which is not uncommon in today’s newsrooms but was a novelty in his era. Upon leaving KGUN, Pyritz moved into his current role with the county. As Pinal’s communications and community relations administrator, he oversees the county’s government television station, Channel Pinal, and organizes special events throughout the county, among his many other duties. In 2012, Pyritz was inducted onto the CAC Wall of Success. Born and raised in San Manuel, Pyritz attended the University of Arizona after completing his associate degree at CAC. At Arizona, he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science.
