If you were planning on making the trip to Florence to share your comments about the proposed Medical Marijuana Facility in Dudleyville on Jan. 17, you can cancel the trip. The Pinal County Public Works department has noticed that the item on the Planning and Zoning Commission has been pulled from the agenda due to a public notice deficiency made by the applicant. The applicants will have to resubmit paperwork and publish a new public notice. A date for rescheduling the meeting has not been set at this time. The original application was submitted by Paul Shaub, Dr. Glenn Wilt and Gregory Rowles. The three-member board plans on opening the Pinal County Wellness Center to distribute marijuana to authorized prescription holders.

Medical marijuana facility public hearing postponed

By Chase KampCopper Area News The new five-member Pinal County Board of Supervisors faced its first controversial piece of business on Jan. 9, a proposal by Sheriff Paul Babeu to move 16 merit employees to at-will status, and voted to hold on a vote until next month. The proposal would allow the Sheriff to increase his authority over a number of lieutenants and directors from patrol and the jail, who would not be able to appeal any disciplinary actions or firings. These employees

would not covered by a written contract or bargaining agreement and the employment could be ended at any time by either the employee or the employer, with or without cause. PCSO commander Jeffrey Karns retired on Jan. 1 and e-mailed a letter addressed to Babeu to all PCSO staff claiming he would be terminated if Babeu’s proposal was approved. Karns was set to lose more than $14,000 in salary after the at-will shift, whereas lieutenants in patrol and investigations would get a salary increase

out of a jail-improvement fund. In his email, Karns said the proposal would ruin morale and allow Babeu to appoint political allies. Babeu told the Board his proposal would improve performance and was within his purview as a department head. The Board unanimously voted to table the item until next month. Supervisor Todd House said he received correspondence both for and against the measure and requested more time to review the proposal. The vote was the first for

New Board of Supervisors delay vote on at-will PCSO employeesnew District 2 Supervisor Cheryl Chase. Chase served three terms as a state legislator from 2000 to 2006 for then LD 23, which includes most of the Copper Corridor, and then began work as a Community Relations Administrator for Sheriff Paul Babeu at PCSO. It was a job that took her to every corner of

Pinal County working with veterans, women’s organizations and domestic violence advocacy groups. In the spring of 2012, then-candidate for Sheriff Steve Henry approached Chase about a possible run for Supervisor on the new five-member board. “I was very happy working in the Sheriff’s Office,” Chase said. “I can

say I had a possible future political run in the back of my mind, but it wasn’t a top goal. I am very pleased that the voters believed in me to elect me as their supervisor.” Chase says she is looking ahead to the myriad of matters that will come before the board in the upcoming months. The challenges, the new supervisor said, will be “interesting and somewhat daunting.” “There are of course a lot of concerns related to growth and public safety,” the District 2 Supervisor said. “I have no doubt I will be a strong voice for all first responders. I understand the issues they face on a day-to-day basis.” One of the subjects that is key to her district is the expansion of Hunt Highway. “I am concerned about that road,” Chase said. “I see it as a major safety issue for everyone in the area. This is a priority for me. It seems that every time we have a significant rain, the road becomes flooded. I would like to address that very soon.”

Pinal County Supervisor Pete Rios is pleased to announce that the Waste Disposal Voucher Program for 2013 will begin Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. The vouchers are a replacement for the free dump days that used to take place throughout the San Pedro Valley area. Residents can obtain their voucher at the Board of Supervisors office located at 118 South Catalina Avenue in Mammoth. To receive your free waste disposal vouchers you must bring a current

utility bill with name and service address imprinted to provide proof of residence. If you have more than one residence, you can only receive vouchers for your primary residence. Each voucher will allow for disposal of residential debris at the Oracle Transfer Station, 2100 East Oracle Transfer Station Road or at the Dudleyville Landfill, Highway 77 in Dudleyville. Please remember that the person who obtains the voucher must be present

when redeeming it at the landfill or transfer station. Supervisor Rios reminds residents to be thoughtful when using the vouchers. “Use the blue recycling bins to dispose of your recyclables. Use the voucher for those items that are not recyclable.” For more information on the voucher program, please contact Supervisor Rios’ office at 520-866-7830. FLORENCE – Arizona continues to see an increase in flu activity. As of the final week in 2012, the state had 790 cases for the season and 190 of those were new cases confirmed through laboratory testing. Pinal and 13 other counties were reporting increased flu activity. Flu shots through the Pinal County Public Health are just $15, a bargain compared to the cost of cold and flu medicines or trips to the doctor’s office and missed work. Flu shots are easier to find than ever before with major drug stores and grocery stores offering the shots. Some of these locations are able to submit claims for insurance reimbursement. “People often focus on the physical toll that

influenza takes on them and their families – usually feeling crummy for a week or so,” said Public Health Director Tom Schryer. “What they fail to consider is the economic toll it takes in terms of missed work hours, lost productivity, the cost of treatment and hours spent waiting for care. But flu also presents the risk of death for those with weakened immune systems, the elderly or people with heart or lung problems.” Infection from the influenza virus can trigger an array of symptoms, including: fever or chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle and body aches, headaches, fatigue and, in some people, vomiting and diarrhea. “While the flu shot is

not 100 percent effective all the time, it is the best defense against the influenza virus,” Schryer said. “If you suspect you have influenza, you should limit your exposure to others and seek medical treatment if you develop difficulty breathing, chest pain, frequent vomiting, or experience persistent cough or fever lasting more than three days.” “Employees who try to brush off their symptoms and tough it out at work can actually make things worse for the office as a whole,” Pinal County Public Health Epidemiologist Graham Briggs explains. “Instead of one or two people missing work for a few days, the whole office gets sick adding up to a lot more absenteeism.”

There’s still time to protect yourself from flu

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. – Born and raised in San Manuel, Ariz., Joe Pyritz admits that he was not ready for a big four-year university which is why he enrolled in classes at Central Arizona College in the early 1980s. “I felt that CAC would give me a better foundation for going into a university and being able to succeed there.” Pyritz made the right choice. In the midst of a roughly 22-year career in television

Career in the public eye thrusts Joe Pyritz onto CAC’s Wall of Success

Joe Pyritz

and media, Pyritz now fi nds himself amongst the most accomplished students ever to graduate from CAC. In November of 2012, Pyritz was inducted onto CAC’s Wall of Success. “I’m very humbled. To this day, I’m still speechless about it,” Pyritz says, his statement dripping with irony. One look at Pyritz’s accomplishments and it’s easy to tell that this is not a man accustomed to being at a loss for words. Upon graduating from CAC in 1983, he earned a bachelor’s degree three years later from the University of Arizona where he was a political science major with a minor in communications. Pyritz cites his experience at CAC and on the college’s speech team in helping him prepare for the life. “CAC gave me a great deal of background with communication and being

with the speech team,” Pyritz said, “and being able to interact with more than just students at the college really prepared me for what I’m doing today as far as interacting with everyone from elected offi cials to the public.” Today, Pyritz is the communications and community relations administrator for Pinal County - a post he has held since 1999. Prior to serving the county, Pyritz could be seen on televisions across Tucson as a reporter and fi ll-in anchor for the city’s ABC affi liate KGUN-TV. During his tenure as part of KGUN’s news team, Pyritz earned an award from the Associated Press, an accolade he is quick to recognize as a team award. Of course, he views his nine-year tenure with KGUN with the fondest of memories. “It was very exciting, each day was different. You were rarely inside the

offi ce; you were usually out chasing down stories.” According to Pyritz, he was a bit of a trailblazer, becoming Tucson’s fi rst multimedia journalist. This meant that he had to shoot, edit and report his own stories, which is not uncommon in today’s newsrooms but was a novelty back then. Upon leaving KGUN, Pyritz moved into his current role with the county. As Pinal’s communications and community relations administrator, he oversees the county’s government television station, Channel Pinal, and organizes special events throughout the county - among other duties. “I have a great time with this because it allows me to get out and meet people, to express what’s going on to the public, and inform the public about what is going on within the walls of the county government.” Given the opportunity

to review his career, Pyritz now can more appropriately refl ect upon his induction onto the Wall of Success. “Little did I know when I enrolled at CAC that I would be working in the county that I was born in, that I went to school in, and have now received this prestigious award in,” he said. Pyritz was born and raised in San Manuel. He graduated from San Manuel High School in 1981 and went to work underground for Magma Copper Company. He also worked for Community Schools as a lifeguard. “Growing up in San Manuel during the time the mine was going full steam was something special,” Pyritz said in an interview with the San Manuel Miner. “It seems that all of us have a special bond just because of that. I wish more people could have grown up in that environment.

While enjoying my copy of Scott Baxter’s large book, I am reminded of how the ranching life of our Wood families had been in the Aravaipa Creek country of Pinal County, Arizona. I knew very little, if anything at all, about the ranching business when Cliff Wood and I were married, and from the record book of Cliff’s mother I learned quite a bit about what had gone on before, such as the work involved and the cost of improvements. Unless one experiences

the real, hard-working ranch life, one can’t know how much planning is needed in that life where there has always been the uncertainty of weather and availability of money, plus the possibility of getting seriously hurt while working. I was fortunate to have experienced a few interesting happenings

By N. Waddell Before going on their Christmas break, the Hayden Jr. High Lobo basketball teams had one more game to play and the assignment was no easy task – taking on the always tall, always running Braves teams from San Carlos Jr. High. The task proved to

be a bit diffi cult with the Braves taking three of the four scheduled games. The only success the Jr. High Lobos had was a victory by the seventh grade girls’ team over the Braves seventh grade team. Behind the scoring of Brandi Lopez, the Lady Lobos pulled out to a 10

to 5 lead after a quarter of play and combined with some good defensive play increased their lead by one point when the fi rst half of play ended, 15 to 9. Unable to fi nd their scoring touch in the second half, the Lady Lobos relied on their defense and rebounding to hold back

Junior Lobos take on San Carlos; drop three of four games

By John Hernandez The Mountain Vista Cougars and Hayden Lobos squared off in four basketball games on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013. The seventh-grade girls opened up the evening. The Lady Lobos, led by Brandi Lopez’s 12 points, defeated the Lady Cougars 25 – 7. The Cougars’ high scorer was Nikki Baldenegro. Oracle’s Millie Mercer scored 13 points to lead the eighth-grade girls to a victory over the Lobos.

The game was a close one with the Cougars winning 22 -18. The top Hayden scorer was Lexy Gomez with eight points. In the boy’s seventh-grade match up, the Lobos handily defeated the Cougars 28 – 18. Simms for Hayden lead all scorers with 19 points. Mountain Vista’s Jose Maciel scored eight points while Alijah Voita added six points. The eighth-grade boy’s game was a thriller going into double overtime before the Cougars came

away with the victory 42 – 38. The game ended in regulation tied 31 – 31 with three Hayden players fouling out of the game. In the fi rst overtime, Pina hit a three-pointer but Mt. Vista countered with two points by Maciel and a free throw by John Machado to tie the score 34 – 34. In the fi nal three-minute period of overtime, Hayden’s go-to guy Pina scored three points but was unable to match Vince Vindiola’s eight points which sealed the victory.

Hayden posts three of four wins over Oracle

the Lady Braves winning with a 19 to 15 score. Only three Lady Lobo players got on the score sheet with Brandi Lopez leading the way with 12 points and help from Aliyana Perez with six points. Jaden Gonzales had one point in the Lady Lobo win. Up next were the seventh grade boys’ Lobo team and the height advantage the Braves had as well as their three-point accuracy proved to be too much for the Lobos. The Lobo team gave it all they had but were no match for the taller Braves losing 12 to 36. Again, only three Lobo players got on the score sheet with Julian Cruz

leading the way with six points followed by Emitt Sims with four points. Gavin Torres scored two points for the Lobos. The eighth grade girls’ game turned into a wild one after the fi rst half of play. The fi rst half was a back and forth game with the lead exchanging several times before the half ended with the Lady Lobos ahead by one point, 14 to 13. The second half was a tale of two different games. In the third quarter, the Lady Braves came out of the locker room running and gunning outscoring the Lady Lobos, who could not buy a basket, to take a 16 to 30 lead after three

quarters of play. The fourth quarter was all Lady Lobos defense holding the Lady Braves to no score in the fourth period while making an exciting comeback that fell just short fi nally losing 26 to 30. Brandi Lopez again led Lady Lobo scoring with 10 points followed by six points from Lexy Gomez. Jessica Lopez had four points with three Lady Lobos, Leticia Vargas, Aliyana Perez and Brittney Arbizo, scoring two points each. to be a battle of who would miss the basket the most with the Lobos coming out on the short end trailing 8 to 10 at the end of the fi rst period. The second quarter was also a game putting the ball back in the basket after misses with Hayden’s Chris Rabago having much success under the boards to lead the Lobos with four baskets to trail the Braves 16 to 17 at the half time break. The third quarter was a quarter of who would win the running up and down the court and put the ball in the basket. The quarter was

a standstill with the score 23 all at the end of three quarters. It would be as close as the Lobos would get to the Braves. The Lobo scoring went by the way side unable to land a basket while watching the Braves hit for four scores to claim the hard fought win over the Lobos 23 to 31. Again, only three Lobo players got on the score sheet with Chris Rabago leading the way with 12 points followed by Santiago Pina with six points and John Henry Gaona with fi ve points. The game was the fi nal scheduled game of the year with the Lobo teams taking a break for Christmas.

By N. Waddell A great time was had by the seven basketball teams that took part in the Hayden Jr. High basketball tournament on Jan. 4 and 5. The teams played three round robin games on Friday to determine the seeding for the next day’s bracket play and there was plenty of action on both the boy’s and girl’s side of the tournament that culminated with an exciting overtime championship game. I was not able to get all the fi nal scores of the boy’s round robin games with the High Desert team from Globe earning the top seed with San Carlos Jr. High getting the second seed and the Lobos of Hayden Jr. High the third seed. There were only three boy’s teams with Cibecue Jr. High holding back its boy’s team because of discipline. On the girl’s side of the tournament, the Lady Lobos opened up the round robin taking on and defeating the Lady Wildcats of Cibecue with a score of 28 to 15. Lexy Gomez led the Lady Lobos with 22 points and Brandi Lopez and Angelica Casillas getting two points apiece.

The next game had San Carlos’ Lady Braves running over the Lady Tigers of High Desert with balanced scoring and a defense that held the Lady Tigers to only two points for the entire game to win 32 to 2. High Desert was on the court again for the next game and gave the Lady Wildcats of Cibecue a game with better scoring and better rebounding. But the running game of the Lady Wildcats pulled the game out for Cibecue with a 25 to 23 score. The Lady Lobos and Lady Braves tangled down to the fi nal buzzer with the defense of the Lady Braves holding the Lady Lobos scoreless in the third quarter the big difference and the height of the Braves girl’s team also a big factor in the game that ended with the Braves winning 13 to 17. Leticia Vargas led the Lobos with fi ve points followed by Jessica Lopez with four points and two points apiece from Lexy Gomez and Brandi Lopez. The Lady Braves and Lady Wildcats tangled in the next

Hayden’s Hambly hosts holiday hoopsgame and again the defense of the Lady Braves came up big. The two teams kept exchanging baskets for three periods with the score 28 to 26 in favor of the Lady Braves. As mentioned, the Lady Braves defense again came up big holding the Lady Wildcats scoreless in the fourth quarter to win the game 40 to 26. The Lady Lobos took on the High Desert team next and the inability of the Lobos to put the basketball in the bucket almost caused them the game. The Lady Tigers played the Lady Lobos tough through out the game with the Lobos fi nally putting the game away with good defense winning with a 24 to 20 score. Jessica Lopez led Lobo scoring with eight points and Leticia Vargas close behind with seven points and Brandi Lopez with six points. Lexy Gomez hit a three pointer in the game. The game ended the round robin portion for the girls on Friday to set up the brackets for Saturday’s games with San Carlos earning the top seed and bracket game against the number four seed the Lady Tigers of High

Desert. The other game in the bracket portion had the number two seed Lady Lobos taking on the number three seed Cibecue Jr. High. The fi rst game of the bracket play had the Lady Braves of San Carlos taking care of the Lady Tigers of High Desert with another lopsided score of 32 to 6 to advance to the championship game. The next bracket game had the Lady Lobos of Hayden on the court against the Cibecue Lady Wildcats and the outcome was not what the crowd expected. With the Lady Lobos unable to buy a basket missing layup after layup and the Lady Wildcats equally ineffective, the Lobos took a 4 to 2 lead into the half time break. The second half was very different! The Lady Wildcats started to fi nd their running game while the Lobos continued with their poor shooting to trail the Wildcats 6 to 12 at the end of the third period. The shooting problems continued for the Lady Lobos while the Lady Wildcats took advantage to run to an 8 to 21 win to advance to the championship game against San Carlos. In the boy’s fi rst bracket

game, the Lobos of Hayden Jr. High, with a couple of starters missing, took on the running Braves of San Carlos. The Lobos stayed with the Braves for the fi rst half but they did not have enough fi re power to overcome the running and scoring of the Braves point guard who dropped in 26 points to lead the Braves to a 24 to 42 win over the Lobos. Chris Rabago led Lobo scoring with 13 points followed by Julian Cruz with eight points. Mario Chavez scored two points and Emitt Sims had one point. The Braves win set

up a game against the High Desert Tigers in the boy’s championship game. The taller Lady Braves of San Carlos took control of the girl’s championship early with a 9 to 0 lead after on period and never looked back winning the game with a score of 30 to 19. After presenting the second place plaque to Cibecue and the fi rst place plaque to the Lady Braves of San Carlos, who went undefeated in the tournament, the all-tournament team was announced. during which time I didn’t get injured. There was the time I was riding with the men on a narrow trail on the back side of Table Mountain, and my horse slipped on a mossy rock. Luckily, the horse halfway fell to the left of the trail instead of at the lower edge above the canyon below, and that I had leather chaps on. I only received a bad case of shakes! behind some cattle and one of my bra straps broke! My brother, Bill Kishbaugh, wrote the following “The Good Times”, and dedicated it to Cliff and his brother, Fred: “Have you ever ridden a horse all day in the high desert with real cowboys? Lips so dry you drank from waterholes with bugs in them! Have you ridden across snow and ice-covered rock on a treacherous slope? Wind blowing cold, lips cracked, and face turned ruby red!” “Have you been where you can hear another rider’s voice a mile away?

Have you branded calves in a cedar post corral, ate sandwich lunches from a sugar sack tied to your saddle?” “Well, I have! Have you seen where the Indians camped; broken pottery, arrowheads, straw-covered floors in ancient caves? Well, I have! -- just a little of the cowboy’s life around Table Mountain, Collar Button, Holy Joe Peak, Brandenburg Mountain, Bear Springs, White Wash, Rim Rock country, Oak Springs, and other seldom visited places in southeastern Arizona.”

Desert, Jennica Hatch earned the honor; from the third place Lobos, Jessica Lopez and Leticia Vargas took the honors; from the runner-up Lady Wildcats named were Shanice Sinquah, Hanna Mallow and Portia Goseyun; and the champion Lady Braves placed Bethany Bush, Hailey Williams, Kaitlin Case and Kayla Dosela on the all-tournament team. Up next was the most

exciting game of the tournament, an overtime affair between the Tigers of High Desert and the San Carlos Braves. It was a battle of two running teams bumping heads until a winner was declared. The Tigers broke out to a 9 to 2 lead after one period of play but the Braves did not back down, holding the Tigers scoreless in the second quarter to tie the game at nine apiece at the end of the fi rst half of play. The fast pace continued in the second half with the Tigers taking a one point 19 to 18 lead at the end of the third quarter with the Braves not backing down in the fourth period to tie the game at 26 to 26 when the fourth quarter buzzer went off to set up the overtime period. In the overtime period, the Tigers, behind Damien Kern, came out hot and running outscoring the Braves 9 to 3 in the overtime with Kern scoring eight of the points to win the boys’ championship of the Hayden Jr. High Holiday Basketball Tournament. With the presentation of the runner-up plaque to San Carlos and the championship plaque to the Tigers, the all-tournament team was announced. With the continuing lack of financial support from the state, the possibility of purchasing a pickup truck for school purposes are non-existent at best.

But thanks to ASARCO Ray Mines, the Ray Unified School District and Hayden-Winkelman School District each received a truck, which will be

put to good use by the districts’ maintenance and transportation departments. Both districts appreciate the support received from ASARCO Ray Mines.
