Mary P. Duarte, 88, of Kearny, passed away on April 8, 2012 at Northwest Medical Center, Tucson. Mary was born the daughter of Domingo and Maria (Rodriguez)

Pacheco on November 29, 1 923 in Sonora, Arizona. She grew up Sonora and graduated from Ray High School. On October 2, 1949 she married Joe Duarte in Sonora. The couple

made their home in Sonora and later moved to Kearny. Mary was very active in the church, teaching catechism and singing in the choir. In 2009 they were the Patron and Patrona at the Fiesta Santa De Nino. Mary is survived by her sisters, Hermina Berlonga, Sister Mary Dominic, Nellie Avelar, Yonie (Fernando) Real and Irene (Bob) Evans; children, Marie Romero, Elvia Lopez, Fernando Real Jr. and Anthony Real; grandchildren, David Lopez, Billy (Beth) Real, Maria Celina (Julian) Acevedo, Ana Alicia Lopez, Sarah Romero, Rebekah Romero, Angela

Lopez and Antonio Cruz; and seven great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joe “Chema” Duarte; siblings, Augustine Pacheco, Enrique Pacheco, Jesus Pacheco, Richard Pacheco and Virginia Pacheco. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny on April 13 with a Rosary preceding it. Interment was at Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden. FLORENCE – The Pinal County Public Health District is holding its monthly Diabetes Education classes in May. This month’s classes will deal with depression and stress issues diabetics may come across in their battle with the disease. Stress related to diabetes can affect blood glucose levels when a diabetic fails to take good care of themselves by watching what they eat. Stress hormones can also contribute to a rise in blood glucose levels. Studies have shown that female diabetics are more likely to suffer from depression while fi ghting the disease. Diabetes Education Program Coordinator Mary Gonzales hosts the free classes designed to educate those that suffer from the disease and offer

Editor, Copper Basin News: I am Bradley Richards, a new medical provider at the Kearny Clinic, and I moved to Kearny in April 2011. After a warm welcome from the community here, I have wanted nothing more than to reach out to the community and see if I can be a bigger part of improving Kearny in any way possible. I have served in leadership roles in athletics, religion, and scouting and feel that each of these can help me. I come from a diverse background, having lived in upstate New York, rural and suburban Utah, Oregon, Belgium, and France. With my background, education, and outside perspective, I feel I could be a perfect addition to the Town Council of Kearny. I am one of fi ve children, having four sisters and being the fourth child. I am an Eagle Scout. I have a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant studies

from Pacifi c University in Oregon; I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Weber State University, and was an honors graduate in both disciplines. I was an academic All-American in college having played volleyball and was the president of the team for three of the four years that I played. I have a beautiful wife and two young children, a 4 ½ year old daughter and 2 year old son. I love my family, I love my work, I have a passion for medicine, and I love God and try live my life in a way that would please Him. I am an individual that prides myself on honesty; in the home, my work, and leisure activity. I am a person who cares about others. I listen to all sides of a discussion before taking a position, and I promise that if you support me, I will do my best to always listen to what the town wants and

needs. I support and care for the environment and what nature has to offer; Kearny being a town that has a golf course, lake, hiking and other trails, and other important environmental facets that make this little town so unique. I have a strong desire to promote growth here and keep residents and families here in Kearny, and will work to sustain goals and activities to encourage this. I believe ethical practice and in social justice, as our country was founded on similar principles, and hope to represent Kearny as a Town Council member that can support these principles. I have a strong belief in serving the community and making the citizens have a voice in what is done with their community. I believe in this small community and in striving to keep it a great place to live, and creating a town that people will continue to be proud of.

By Offi cer Hatch As we enter the warmer months of the year and we begin our summer activities, the Town of Kearny police department would like to share some important information regarding ATVs (All Terrain Vehicles) and OHVs (Off-Highway Vehicles). Safety is the number one priority. Children under 16 should not ride adult ATVs. There are ATVs designed for children and always follow manufacture minimum age requirements. Be sure to supervise children under 16. Riders under the age of 18 must wear a USDOT safety rated helmet at all times. It is recommended that all riders wear a helmet. Remember to ensure all equipment is functioning

ATVs and What You Need to Knowproperly. The following equipment is required on ATVs and OHVs per Arizona Revised Statutes: A spark arrestor that is USDA approved, brakes adequate to stop and hold the vehicle, a muffl er or noise dissipative device that prevents sound above 96 decibels during prescribed stationary sound testing, eye protection when riding ATVs not equipped with a windshield, headlights and taillights for use from dusk to dawn, a brake light and at least one red rear refl ector if taillight does not refl ect, a properly registered license plate securely fastened to the rear of the vehicle and clearly visible, a rearview mirror, seat and footrests for the operator and passenger if vehicle is designed to carry passengers and a safety fl ag at least 6 by 12 inches and 8 feet above the ground on sand dunes or areas designed by the land management agency. ATVs shall not be operated on highways or any roadway unless properly registered for such use. To ensure

your vehicle is street legal you will need a functioning license plate light, horn that is audible from a distance of at least 200 feet, proper insurance and in certain areas the vehicle may require emissions testing. You will also need a valid driver’s license to operate the ATV on a highway or roadway. The following is prohibited when operating any ATV or OHV: Operating with reckless disregard for safety of persons or property; off an existing road, trail or route in a manner that causes damage to wildlife habitat, cultural or natural recourses; on closed roads, trails or areas; over unimproved roads, trails, routes or areas unless allowed by rules or regulation; that causes damage to the environment as prohibited by rule, regulation, ordinance or code. Before you ride, please take into account the laws and safety regulations. Pamphlets with further information regarding these laws and places to ride are available at the Kearny Police Station.

By Nolberto Waddell The Lady Lobos traveled to Ray High School last Tuesday to take on the Lady Bearcats in the last scheduled game of the 2012 softball season for both teams with a lot at stake for both teams regarding seeding for the start of the state softball tournament. The visiting Lady Lobos struck first in the top of the first inning scoring a run on an inside-the-park homerun by Demitria Boltarez. The Lobos continued to hit the softball in the inning but could not bring the runners across the plate stranding them at second and third base. Boltarez starting in the pitching circle for the Lady Lobos put the Bearcats down in order in the bottom of the first striking out two of the

three Bearcat batters. The Lady Lobos struck again in the top of the second scoring five runs on six consecutive hits with four of the hits doubles to take a 6 to 0 lead in the second inning. The Bearcats got two base runners in the bottom of the second on walks but both were stranded on base. The flood gates opened up on the Bearcats in the top of the third inning when the Lobos sent 12 batters to the plate collecting nine straight hits to produce eight runs for a 14 to 0 lead when the last out was made. Boltarez put down the Bearcats in order in the bottom of the third striking out two batters. The Lady Lobo bats stayed hot in the top of the fourth inning scoring two more runs on two walks and three hits to

increase their lead to 16 to 0. A walk and a hit in the bottom of the fourth had a Bearcat in scoring position but she never came around getting caught trying to score on another base hit for the second out. The fourth inning ended on a ground out. The Lady Lobo hitters were at it again in the top of the fifth inning scoring four runs on a walk, three consecutive doubles, an out followed by a walk and a hit batter before the inning ended with the Lobos holding a 20 to 0 lead and the Bearcats down to their final at bats if they could not score 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth. They couldn’t! Boltarez shut the door on them with a double play and a strike out to end the game,

20 to 0 in the five inning shortened game via the 10-run rule. Demitria Boltarez got the pitching win holding the Bearcats scoreless on two hits, struck out seven Bearcat batters and walked three. In the offensive stats, every Lady Lobo starter had at least one hit with Alexis Felix, Devin Estrada and Kyana Garcia each getting four hits in five at bats. Getting three hits in the game were Demitria Boltarez and Marlisse Perez. Stephanie Chiquete and Adri Cruz had two hits apiece with Mary Lechuga and Melinda Marinez each getting one hit. The win for the Lobos gave them the number 10 seed in the tournament and will pit them against the number 23 seed, the Ray High Lady Bearcats. The teams will square off again in the first round of the tournament to be played today at 6 p.m. at the Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix. The winner of the game will take on the Lady Tigers of

St. David High School, the number seven seed, again at the Rose Mofford Complex on Friday evening and the winner of this game will have the number two seeded team in the tournament waiting for them on Saturday morning. The number two ranked team in the

tournament is well known to the Lobos and Bearcats: the San Manuel Lady Miners. Good luck to the Lady Lobos, their coaches and their four seniors on the team; Demitria Boltarez, Stephanie Chiquete, Mary Lechuga and Yvonna Gonzales.

Christopher Daniel Estrada has announced that he has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, with plans for four years of active duty followed by four more of inactive duty. The young man will be graduating this year from Ray High School. He will be leaving on Aug. 27 and will be stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. He is the son of Angelita Lara of Kearny and Jesus Estrada of Arkansas.

By Nolberto Waddell The Hayden High School baseball Lobos were hoping that a win in the final game of the season against their rivals would give them enough power points to finish in the top eight in Division IV. The Lobos took care of their business but the win did not get them the points they needed, finishing just shy of the eighth seed in the state baseball tournament. A top eight finish would have given them a bye in the first round. The game against the

Bearcats turned out to be a nail biter for the Lobo fans. The game was close but going into the sixth inning the Lobos were on the wrong side of the score trailing 6 to 6. The Lobo bats came alive in the top of the sixth inning scoring eight runs to take a 14 to 6 and held the Bearcats scoreless the rest of the way to take the win. No stats or score sheet were turned in so the details of the game can not be printed. The win over the Bearcats did not give them enough power points to climb

into the top eight seeds, finishing in the number nine spot and forcing them to play yesterday in a park that will bring back many memories to past Lobo baseball players. The State baseball tournament will return to Diablo Stadium in Tempe, the stadium dubbed “Lobo Stadium” because the Lobo baseball teams of past made a lot of history winning a majority of their state championships on the Diablo Stadium diamond. Another reason for the name was that the stadium would be flooded with

Lobo fans every game they played. The Lobos will have played their first round game by the time this article appears. The Lobos are scheduled to play at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, taking on the team from Joy Christian Academy. A win against Joy Christian will send the Lobos to a meeting with the Arizona Lutheran Coyotes baseball team on Friday, May 4, with a first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Lobos will play both games on the Diablo Stadium northwest

Hayden Baseball returns to ‘Lobo’ Stadiumfield. A win against the Coyotes will put the Lobos in a battle with the number one ranked team in the state tournament, the Phoenix Christian High School Cougars. The game is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Good luck to the Lobo

baseball team, their coaches and the graduating seniors. The Lobo baseball program has a great history on these fields and here’s hoping that this year’s team can add to the history of this storied program; the Hayden Lobo Baseball team.

Georgie Digs ...By Georgie Wood([email protected]) There are a few who use the social network “Facebook” to share some things that are outrageous to say the least. One is the bumper sticker that reads “Don’t Re-Nig in 2012 - Stop repeat offenders - don’t re-elect Obama”. I read that the maker of this racist (in my opinion!), anti-Obama sticker has closed down his site on the internet. I wish those who enjoy telling others “don’t re-nig” would think before they speak, and that they would be respectful

enough to say or write President Obama instead of only Obama. I do agree with another person’s statement that it is a good thing to be open-minded, to be able to say what you’re thinking about or what questions you might want to share, and to be able to disagree, but in an agreeable way. I have met a few people who have made me feel better about myself because I chose to try to follow another path - that of not being a hypocrite who shows hatred and disrespect. I believe that lack of respect and hatred

starts at home. The following is a Nelson Mandela quote from Long Walk To Freedom, the autobiography of Nelson Mandela: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate and if they learn to hate they can be taught to

love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”


Compiled by Vicki Clark Ray High School’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps awards banquet was held last week at the Kearny Elks Lodge. Opening the program was MSGT Willie Jordan who outlined the events that the unit participated in the academic year 2011-12. These events included memorial services, parades, color guard events, and manning the basketball concession stand to raise funds for the unit. He also made mention of the incentive trips that the unit was able to take part of including the Old Tucson Fright Night, Camp Pendleton and Universal Studios trip, Yuma trip, Westwood High School Leadership Camp, ALLECA Leadership, AZ Youth Leadership at ASU and various community service events. MSGT Jordan thanked the people of the community for all the support during the food bank and Christmas basket food drives and Toys for Tots campaign. He also thanked the parents and other volunteers who assisted during the various trips and especially those who donated to the concessions stand. The microphone was then turned over to narrator April Jordan who introduced the following awards. Distinguished Scholastic Achievement which is presented to a cadet that has maintained an “A” average in all subjects including ROTC and finished the academic year in the top 10% of his/her class. The award was presented to Altin Hing. Women Marines Association Award is presented annually to the cadet in the unit who has participated in at least the second year of ROTC, has maintained a satisfactory academic record and citizenship and has one of the highest leadership education grades in the unit. Kara Gillaspy was the recipient of this award. National Society of Daughters of 1812 is presented to the cadet who has maintained an academic

excellence record and citizenship, has maintained leadership, patriotism, and upright character in speech and habits which exemplify the idea upon which our nation was founded. Michelle Johnson was honored with this award. American Veterans (AMVETS) award is presented to the cadet who demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities, diligence in the discharge of duties and willingness to serve both God and country. This year’s award was earned by James Byers. The MOAA Award is presented to the cadets who have demonstrated qualities of Academic Excellence, Leadership, Military Discipline, Dependability, Patriotism and upright character in speech habits. Tom Ralph presented this year’s awards to Chris Misita, Taeler Harmon and Richard Manriquez. The Award of Merit is presented to cadets for who excel in both military and scholastic activities and was presented by Richard L. Nelson to Top Freshman C/Pfc Seth Phillips, Top Sophomore C/Cpl Jesse Perez and Top Junior C/ Capt. Altin Hing. The Daughters of the American Revolution Award recognizes an outstanding cadet who demonstrates the qualities of dependability and good character and was presented by Reba Schweitzer to Michelle Johnson. The Non-Commissioned Officers Association award is given to the outstanding cadet non-commissioned officer who has consistently exhibited superb military bearing, personal appearance, development and leadership ability. Cole Miller earned this honor. The Desert Mustang of Arizona award is voted on by the recipient’s peers and is presented in recognition of outstanding performance, military proficiency, bearing, discipline, character and participation the program. John O’Hara presented the award to Altin Hing.

Family, friends gather to raise funds for scholarship

Family and friends of Stephanie Ward gathered together this weekend to raise money for a memorial scholarship in memory. Stephanie died earlier this year in a car accident on US 60. Stephanie was a resident of Superior and graduate of Ray High School. The friends and family hosted a motorcycle poker ride and barbecue lunch to raise money for the scholarship. By Steve YurekPastor, Kearny SBC Our Sunday night 6 p.m. non-traditional service continues to grow with “Walking-180” leading us in praise and worship. This is a great time to get together with friends and let your hair down in a casual setting, hear some great music and come together to study God’s Word. This past Sunday night we welcomed a number of new visitors and we talked about ‘Self-Control’. The virtue of self-control is one that we long for, yet few attain it. In fact, most people do not even try because they don’t want to say “no” to themselves. Self-control, while it is highly respected and greatly desired, is tough. Believe me…this is the greatest area that God is constantly working on with me. There are two aspects to self-control that Paul talks about in 1 Corinthians. (1) Self-control requires great strength because the hardest person to say “no” to is…yourself. (2) Self-control requires great strength because self-control also means doing what must be done. Self-control requires great strength because exercising self-control involves taking risks. I am reminded of what happened to Abraham in the Old Testament. He and Sarah waited for the promised son, but each month nothing happened. Finally after a long wait, Sarah came up with a plan. She gave her maid, Hagar, to her husband and told him to have a son through Hagar. Abraham agreed. Ishmael was born. And

Pastor’s CornerGod said, “No.” Ishmael will not be the promised son. Soon afterward, Sarah was pregnant with Isaac. Because Abraham and Sarah didn’t exercise self-control, havoc was created. The result of their inability to wait on God, created a sibling rivalry that escalated to hatred and war that continues to this day in the Middle East. Granted, our times of not controlling ourselves may not create problems that big. However, the problems we do create do wreak havoc in our lives and the lives of those close to us. So, how do we allow the virtue of self-control to grow within us? We talked about this Sunday morning and followed up with more discussion on Sunday night. The truth is that self-control is control of the self. WE cannot control our “selves”. The Holy Spirit is our coach. He teaches, trains, corrects, and encourages us. When we yield to his coaching, we can live a life of self-control. Coach Tom Landry had a great quote about self-control. He stated - “The role of the coach is to make men do things they

don’t want to do to achieve the results they want to achieve.” This virtue of self-control is not the result of our work. It is the result of the Holy Spirit working in and through us. So….who is controlling your “self”? Self-control is not when I control my “self”. Self-control is when the Holy Spirit helps me to control my “self”. Trust me this is not always an easy thing to do…I am still a work in progress! Don’t miss this Fridays movie at the SBC – TINTIN! Eighteen students will receive degrees and certificates on Friday, May 4, during the 2012 Central Arizona College Aravaipa Campus commencement ceremony. The ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. on the Aravaipa Campus which is located at 80440 East Aravaipa Road just off of Arizona State Highway 77 between Mammoth and Winkelman. CAC graduation ceremony set for Friday at Aravaipaneed to go to college and you don’t have the grades.” At the time Manuel’s grade point average was a solid “C.” “Her words discouraged me and to this day are engrained in my memory,” Manuel said. “I said to myself that I would not become a forest ranger, but one day I would be in a position to offer students words of encouragement.” After graduation, Manuel went to work for Magma Copper Company. It was his intent to work six months and then attend Central Arizona College full time. As life usually happens, the six months turned into 20 years. In his career at Magma/BHP, he worked as an underground miner, journeyman heavy equipment mechanic, and mechanic/driller. It was also at the mine that he had opportunities to conduct workshops for his fellow miners which gave him the desire to set a goal of becoming a teacher. In 1999 BHP laid off many of its employees due to the declining copper market. Manuel became a displaced miner. Fortunately, government assistance was made available to retrain the displaced miners. Manuel enrolled in the teacher program sponsored by Central Arizona College and Northern Arizona University. He worked as a tutor, librarian and teacher while attending school. He said that all of the professors and staff at the Aravaipa Campus of CAC “were an inspiration and their commitment towards my

education prepared me well for my university studies.” Four years later he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Northern Arizona University. He started his teaching career and has been offering encouraging words to his students ever since. Manuel currently teaches sixth grade at First Avenue Elementary School in San Manuel. He has also taught at Avenue B Elementary School. In 2008, Manuel was named the Mammoth San Manuel Unified School District Teacher of the Year. He was the Arizona Teacher of the Year Ambassador for Excellence in 2009. As an Ambassador, he represented the teachers of Arizona in promoting education and conducting professional development workshops at various colleges and universities for future teachers. Manuel is also involved with the Exitos Escolar (Success in Middle School and Beyond), which is a program that is designed to support area students in attending higher education. Manuel says that what he likes about teaching is being able to bring his life experiences into the classroom and share them with the students. “By using real world scenarios, my students better understand how Academic State Standards are applied in the real world,” he said. During the graduation ceremony, CAC students

will don a variety of medallions, tassels, stoles and colors signifying their accomplishments in the classroom. Some students will graduate with honors after posting a minimum grade point average of 3.5, while several students will earn both a degree and certificate. Students gold stoles are members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, while students donning blue cords are members of the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) program. Graduates wearing white tassels will receive associate of arts degrees, while gold tassels signify associate of science. Associate of business degree recipients sport drab tassels, associate of applied

science students wear green, and those earning an associate of general studies degree don gray tassels. Students earning certificates have caps adorned with blue tassels. Tracy A. School in San Manuel, will serve as the commencement speaker. Manuel was born in Tucson but has lived his entire life in Mammoth. His home was a school building that his parents moved from old Mammoth to New Mammoth. While growing up in the 60s and 70s he spent a lot of time outdoors. This led to the development of hobbies he still enjoys today. He enjoys reading, especially comic books, hunting, fishing, hiking, rock hounding and looking for fossils. As a kid his favorite comic book was Sgt. Rock. His favorite comic is still Sgt. Rock as it is being reprinted. Manuel said that this comic book was very detailed and filled with facts that taught him geography and history. He also taught his son to read by introducing him to comic books. Manuel attended Mammoth Elementary, Gardner Middle School and graduated from San Manuel High School. It was at San Manuel High that a discouraging comment by a counselor would influence Manuel to improve his education some day. The counselor asked Manuel about what career he would like to pursue after graduation. Manuel told her he would like to be a forest ranger. She told him, “You can’t be a forest ranger, you

It has been the goal of Idol Chairperson and Chamber Board member, Martina Burnam to provide something for the youth in the area to be able to show their talents to the public. This year, Trendz and the Copper Basin Chamber bring to you the Idol Contest Friday, May 11, at the Hayden High School Audi-torium, starting at 6 p.m. Admis-sion is $3 or canned goods, or a package of diapers. Proceeds will go to Family First Pregnan-cy Care Center in Winkelman. It has been a month since Pio-neer Days. The evaluations and financial records are finished and it has been determined that it was a successful event. People returning to Kearny, especially the ropers who tried to take a shortcut down Jamestown had to wait for the parade to end. “How long can it take for the parade to end in Kearny?!” When you have five entries it takes an hour. Winning floats were: Friends of the Library – an Old Fash-ioned Library; Girl Scouts – Happy Birthday, Arizona; Dona Witwer and granddaughters from Kearny and Mancos Colorado – Walking the Trail in 1912; Cop-per Basin Railway – Pictorial History of Arizona’s Railroads; Church of the Good Shepherd – Mural of the Ray Methodist Church and steam engine with the Good Shepherd. The Queen’s contest is the busiest of all committees prior to Pioneer Days. Angela Ramirez, Shelly Huerta, Hope Kame, and Joyleign Wormwood worked weekly with the girls to col-lect ticket money and train the contestants with Clora and Jim Murphy, donating buckles.

Queen’s Court was Queen Leah Wallace; first runner up, Cheyenne Rodriguez; second runner up, Jennifer Sims; and attendants Lainey Lope, Josette Kimmel, Destiny Guerrena and Jessica Fessenden. Winner of the Queen’s Drawing were Kent Craig, Darrel Wallace and Rudy Guerena. Water and ice were donated to the Junior Chamber by James Ruiz of Copper Net Systems with Mark Romo of Bank of the West matching the donation. Proceeds went to the Junior Chamber Scholarship fund.
