Court A at the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court was fi lled to capacity with family members of the accused in the Vuvani arson cases, interested parties (including leaders of the Malamulele protests), and a large contingent of police at-tending.

Shining in their absence were members of the Pro-Makhado Task Team, who would have come on previous occassions to show solidarity. This was during the appearance of 11 alleged arsonists and perpetrators of violence in the Vuwani area. At the same time, six others were appearing in Thohoyan-dou for similar offences that were committed in the area under Thohoyandou’s jurisdiction.

The accused at Malamulele did not utter a word during their appearance. Only their legal repre-sentative, Mr Vhutshilo Nange, urged the court to release his clients on bail, saying they were facing

No bail for alleged Vuwani arsonists

“Protest, but do not vandalize” - King

Gruesome testimony during murdercase of alleged Univen serial killer

Louis Trichardt Primary School’s Mpho Murashiwa was selected as a member of the U/13 Limpopo Netball Team. She will represent both her school and province in matches to played during the coming weeks.

From page 1 He postponed the matter to

16 May 2016 for further inves-tigations. The accused, whose ages range from 20 to 50, will remain in custody. The denial of bail was not well received by family members who were at the court.

Tovhowani Davhana of Vu-wani, whose younger brother Rodney was arrested along with three others in connection with the alleged burning of trucks and graders in Vuwani, said it was not fair for the court not to grant them bail after they had spent so many days in custody. “They have been in custody since Wednesday and we do not even know why they were ar-rested. We had hoped that they would be granted bail today. We are very dissappointed but we will have to wait until their next appearance,” he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of State Security David Mahlobo has issued a stern warning that all those involved in fanning violence in Vuwani would be arrested. “Whether it be a politician, business people or traditional leaders involved in this violence, we will hunt you down and arrest you,” he said. Premier Stan Mathabatha also warned that more arrests were eminent, saying the number of

those arrested was not yet even a quarter of those to be arrested.

It was also reported that, in a bid to resolve the ongoing un-rest in the Vuwani and Mashau areas, King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and senior tradi-tional leaders met with Pres Jacob Zuma at Luthuli House on Monday.

After the event, Mphephu said Pres Zuma promised to engage ministers and govern-ment offi cials “to start to roll out awareness campaigns in Vuwani and surrounding ar-eas.” The king added that the campaign would be aimed at educating residents about the benefi ts of establishing a new municipality. He added that they all wanted that learning and teaching should continue uninterrupted. Mphephu called for calmness and urged the community to fight against criminal elements.

A number of stakeholder meetings and different com-munities are underway in the trouble-torn area in an attempt to quell the violence and also bring calm to the area.

Thohoyandou cluster spokes-person Maj Mashudu Malelo has urged communities to guard key points such as schools, clinics and other state properties jealously as they are for their own use. “We urge all commu-

nities to desist from blockading roads as it delays police from attending incidents where in-cidents are reported,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesper-son Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that more arrests were imminent.

The arrest of the accused is the sequel to incidents that started a fortnight ago, when residents lost a case they had against the demarcation board to prevent their incorporation into a new municipality for Malamulele. Residents had since decided on a complete shutdown to show their dis-satisfaction and went on the rampage, burning more than 20 schools, government vehi-cles, graders, a satellite police station, tribal offi ces and other property.

Meanwhile, the Vhembe District, known for consistently producing top-quality results, has been declared a disaster area, following the torching of nearly 50 schools in the area. The highest number of schools that were torched are in the Vuwani area, with oth-ers in Malamulele. According to Education Minister Angie Motsheka, it costs about R30 million to build a school, so the total cost of building new schools is estimated to be more than R500 million rand.

Dissappointed family members leave the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court after their relatives were denied bail.

From left to right are Thovhele Vho-Ramovha, Thovhele Vho-Masia, King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana and Thovhele Vho-Masakona.

Venda king Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said he would engage in discussions with role players such as President Jacob Zuma to fi nd a solution for the Vuwani unrests. Mphephu expressed his support for people who protest when they are not satisfi ed, but he said they should not vandalize schools or other people’s property.

The Venda king held a media conference shortly after his meeting with the Minister of Basic Edu-cation, Angie Motshekga, and several provincial MECs. Traditional leaders from the affected vil-lages were also present at the meeting.

According to Mphe-phu, the reason for the protest is that people f rom Vuwani want to remain part of the Makhado Municipali-ty. He said the protests were organised by com-munity members and not traditional leaders. “People from Vuwani did not call for a new municipality, people from Malamulele did,” he said and expressed his support for people who feel they should not be forced into a new municipality. “I will en-gage the offi ce of Presi-dent Jacob Zuma to look into a solution as soon as possible,” he said.

Ndivhuwo Ntsieni, back in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou.

To cut human fl esh into pieces and sell it “can make good money”. This statement was made in a sworn affi davit by serial murder suspect Ndivhuwo Ntsieni (24) after he was arrested. Ntsieni made another appearance in the Lim-popo High Court in Thohoyandou earlier this week, where he stands accused of killing at least fi ve people, raping four women and robbing his victims.

Senior magistrate Luxson Ramavhale read out the sworn affi davit in a packed Court B in Thohoy-andou on Tuesday. According to the confession of the former Univen student, he met a certain man known only as Rendani at Tshakhuma village in March 2014. Rendani apparently told him (Ntsie-ni) to assist in the business of robbing and killing people and cutting their fl esh into pieces, so that they can sell these and make good money.

In the affi davit, Ntsieni states that Rendani gave him R100 as payment to start a business of robbing people around Golgotha in Thohoyandou. He later claimed that the money acted like a demon, spurring him on to attack and rob more people walking around Golgotha and the University of Venda campus.

He is accused of killing Livhuwani Mmbodi, Tshililo Ndou (9), Shudufhadzo Thagisa, Zwivhuya Mashau and Brenda Ndove.

A police offi cer, Major Shumani Raphulu, told the Limpopo High Court that he managed to arrest the 24-year-old suspect in July 2014 at the house he was renting at Golgotha, a section of Thohoyandou. Raphulu told Acting Judge Jackson Mushasha that he managed to trace the suspect through cell phone records he got from a service provider.

At the time of our going to press, Major Raphulu was still testifying in the case.

Vho-Khotsimunene Japan Mphephu welcomes Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga at the king’s kraal.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga visited the damaged schools to gain fi rst-hand ex-perience of the destruction. She said that without any computerised back-up system, schools had not only lost buildings, but important records dating back many years. Motshekga said her department was yet to quantify the damage left after schools in the area were torched. She said she was not sure when schooling would resume in the area. “We don’t know when things are going to settle down or what’s going to happen tomorrow,” Motshekga said.

“Use your hidden talent to put food on the table”“Soon I had mastered the craft and was enlisted

as a mentor,” he said. “After some time, I got a job as a potter, but when all those big companies that envied my skillfull hands started shutting down business, I saved some money and bought some second-hand machines from them.”

The machines that he bought in-cluded an oven, a potter’s wheel, and some moulds. He returned home to rural Mashau and opened a ceramic products shop and talent-transfer centre. “At TT Ndou Pot-tery and Training, we offer training to both youths and adults,” he said. “Our products are also on sale directly to the public.”

Ndou has so far travelled to Namibia, Cam-eroon, Zimba-bwe and the US. “I have sold my

work in many countries,” he said. “However, South Africa remains my home. I love this country be-cause, even when we have a lack of job opportuni-ties, we can still do something with our hands and get the necessary support from the government. You can look how hard I work - pottery helps me to put food on the table.”

TT Ndou Pottery and Training employs three adults and a youth from Mashau

village. “We also give regular odd jobs to unemployed youths,” he said. “Our biggest challenge is that we stock ceramic and glaze material from Ver-

eening, and without proper transport, we end up losing

a lot of money instead of earning commission

or profit.”Those inter-

ested in getting more informa-tion about TT Ndou Pottery and Training can call 082 973 7563.

“After searching for employment and failing to get a job, many people would rather sit at home doing nothing than creating a job for themselves.”

Seasoned potter Thomas Ndou was in a reflec-tive mood when Limpopo Mirror visited him at his studio at Mashau village last Friday. He is an established potter whose brand name TT Ndou is known throughout Limpopo and abroad because of his beautiful porcelain and ceramic products.

“I know times are hard for us people if we are not working,” he said. “But then some people just sit in at home with magnificent talents. They need to tap into those hidden talents and creativity and see what will happen.”

He explained that he had noticed his artistic tal-ent at a young age, when he was at school. “When our teacher gave us an assignment to mould crea-tures with clay which we had dug from the river, I would amaze the teacher and other pupils with my realistic cows, human figurines and birds,” he recalled.

In 1977, he realised that he needed a bigger space for his creativity to benefit him financially. So he went to Johannesburg and enrolled at a pottery institution.

Rofhiwa Mabila of Stars chases the ball after winning it from Innocent Mathatha of Iya Runga.

In their MMK Administrators League replay match at the Makwarela Stadium on Satur-day, Makhitha Oscar Stars brutally walloped Makhitha Iya Runga 4-1 to secure a place in the regional promotional play-offs that will be played this weekend.

Iya Runga needed at least a draw in the match to book a place in the play-offs, but what they received was an embarrassing defeat. Stars took the game to their opposition from the first whis-tle. It took them only nine minutes to open their account. Wisdom Yingwane gave the ball a final touch, following a square pass from Levy Machaba. Ronewa Mpfumba of Stars was cautioned with a card for a dangerous tackle on Humbulani Managa in the 18th minute.

The Stars increased the margin in the 24th minute. They were awarded a penalty after John Ravhutsi handled the ball within his own penalty box. Masala Tshimenze made no mistake from the spot. Referee Mr Eric Munyai flashed another yellow card three minutes before the half-time whistle. Sydney Luvhengo of Stars tackled Zwanga Pharuli from behind and Munyai took no time to reprimand him.

Stars continued to dominate proceedings in the last half. They were rewarded with a third goal in the 58th minute. Rofhiwa Mabila, who came on as a substitute for Mpho Musitha, headed home after the keeper of Iya Runga, Elikana Nemakanga, palmed the ball back into play in an attempt to clear.

Iya Runga used all their substitution chances in the last half. It did not change the complexion of the game, as the Stars continued to enjoy ball possession.

The keeper of Stars, Thanyani Netshipale, was

Amazing victory for Stars in replay match

Norman “Phangaman” Tshisikhawe wants a rematch.

“I was robbed of my victory and need a rematch” - PhangamanNorman “Phangaman” Tshisikhawe claims he was cheated out of a victory by the referee who officiated at the provincial championship bout between him and Tshifhiwa “Timer” Munyai. Munyai was declared the winner after the ref-eree ruled that there was a technical knock-out in the second round.

The fight between the Limpopo boxers took place a fortnight ago at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sport Complex in Seshego.

Tshisikhawe said he had wanted to cancel the fight even before it was to take place. He claims

to have received information when still in his dressing room that the referee was biased. “I told him I wanted to cancel the fight, but he told me not to,” he said.

The fight, which was scheduled over 10 rounds, lasted for only two. It was evident from the start that Tshisikhawe would be lucky if he survived until the end of their provincial bout, as Munyai was all over him. The referee came to his rescue when he stopped the fight in the second round. At that stage Munyai was throwing killer punches at Tshisikhawe from all angles.

Munyai approached the fight aggressively, giv-ing his opponent no time to breathe. The first round may have gone Tshisikhawe’s way, especially after Munyai was felled down by a punch and the referee counted to four.

Munyai got up and continued with the fight. From there on he just became stronger and in the second round he floored Tshisikhawe with a powerful punch. The referee immediately stopped the fight.

After the event, Tshisikhawe complained that he had been cheated, “especially by the referee’s actions.” He added that he needed a rematch as soon as possible. “I slipped once … and the referee didn’t count. He stopped the fight immediately. When my opponent fell down, the referee counted to four, but to me he didn’t count,” he said.

Munyai responded saying he was ready, should Tshisikhawe ask for a rematch. He said it was a pound-for-pound fight, where he showed his jab-bing skills and professionalism. “I have defended my title and that’s it,” he said.

warned with a yellow card for wasting time. Iya Runga pulled one back through Humbulani Managa in the 69th minute. He headed home, following a corner kick that was taken by Masala Ramashia.

Stars put the matter beyond doubt in the 84th minute when Jonas Ndou scored with a ground cutter.

In harbouring and appeasing the spirit of her late husband, Ms Violet Belemu (60) of Tshisahulu completed the house and turned it into a modest home for herself and her family.

Recently she was happy to move into the new house with the family. Little did she know that her happy new beginning would end abruptly on a sad note.

Thursday, two weeks ago, the worst happened. Her six-roomed house with all its contents worth thousands of rands was completely gutted in a fire and, according to her, the cause of the fire is still a mys-tery. Belemu, who survives on piece jobs,

said she left a child watching television in an adjacent room while she went to a neighbour to buy an airtime voucher. "I usually buy airtime for any eventuality in the course of the night and, to tell you the truth, I did not take more than 10 minutes at my neighbour's house. On coming back, I found my room on fire.

“By then, the fierce fire had spilled to the next room and in no time the whole house was on fire,” she said. Belemu said it took her a long time to achieve her husband's wish but all her efforts were destroyed in minutes. “I am still in shock, I cannot even tell as to what could have caused the fire. I am just hoping that God will reveal the mystery. I cannot point fingers. With the support I am getting

from the community, I am gaining strength bit by bit.”

She added that she had lost everything and that her daughter had lost all her clothing and school books "and she can't stop crying."

The local civic leader, Mr Thomas Rambuwani, said that the community was saddened by the incident. “We called a meeting of the whole block and we have declared the incident a disaster.

We will all extend a helping hand to the granny to assist her in rebuilding the house, but we are also making an appeal to businesses to help in any way they can,” he said.

At the time of our going to press, no case had been reported to the police.

Religious leaders and teachers want to restore sanity

Youth leaders speak out against Vuwani violence

Mayor promises good service to residents of Ward 30

Religious leaders, teachers, learn-er bodies and other stakeholders united over the past week in an effort to call for calm and restore sanity in the Vuwani area.

On 8 May, the Vhembe Pastors Forum took a decision to preach a common sermon on Sunday, denouncing the destruction and looting of school property and the disruption of schooling in Vuwani.

The decision was taken during a crisis meeting held in Louis Trichardt by the National Educa-tion Collaboration Trust (NECT), SADTU, Professional Teachers Union (PEU), Combined Teach-er Unions (CUT), Autonomous Teacher Unions (ATU), National Association of School Governing Bodies, COSAS and the Vhembe Pastors Forum to restore, protect and promote learning and teaching in Vuwani.

“We denounce the destruction and looting of school property and the disruption of schooling. If we do not act, history will judge us harshly,” said forum spokesperson Reverent Dean Alunamutwe Rann-ditsheni in a combined press release for all the stakeholders.

Lamenting the deplorable situa-tion, Khulekani Skosana of COSAS said: “Every time there are service delivery protests in the country, parents and adults turn learners into collateral damage when they pre-vent them from attending classes.” This, Skosana said, was always the case even when the grievances in question were unrelated to school-ing and education but ended up impacting the learners negatively. “Our constituency is under siege. The burning of schools is tanta-

mount to destroying our future,” Skosana said.

Over the next few days, the col-lective will be in discussion with the government to explore ways in which the lost school days can be recouped. Part of the proposed solutions will entail organising study camps which, with guaran-teed state security, will secure the safety of learners, and making use of church facilities and underutilised government facilities to continue teaching the children.

“We are ready to go back to the classroom and ensure that children recoup the number of school days they have lost. Once safety and normalcy have been restored to the area, we will go the extra mile,” said SADTU’s provincial secre-tary, Mathome Raphasha. Teacher unions such as the PEU, CUT and ATU are also fully behind the call to go back to the classroom to gain back the lost school days.

Similarly, the collective resolved that parents must release their children to continue preparing for their future. “Parents must not hinder learning and teaching,” the collective said. Closing the meet-ing, NECT CEO Godwin Khosa said: “Parents, teachers, learners, traditional and religious leaders should stand up for the restoration of learning and teaching, and the safety of the learners.”

As part of its campaign to restore and promote learning and teaching, the collective decided to popularise #TheBurningofSchoolsMustFall. Church leaders in the area have also organised a prayer meeting to be held on 11 May at Levubu Primary school at 10:00.

“We are appealing to law-enforcement agencies to intervene in the situation in Vuwani. Some of us do not support the destruction of schools in our community as it sets us back and the work we’re doing in improving education outcomes in the community,” says Mr Kgothaso Mokgophi, a peer educator and leader of a stationery donation organisation.

According to the 20-year old Mokgophi, the destruction of the schools in the area is a threat to an already bleak future for many youths in the community. The protests in the area are the result of an ongoing disagreement between the Municipal De-marcation Board and Vuwani residents. Mokgophi added that while the right to strike was enshrined in the Constitution, there are many other ways in which the situation could have been handled without the damage to schools.

Mokgophi is a University of Venda student and is one of fi ve “young change drivers” who have founded an organisa-tion, Limpopo Campaign, that provides tutoring support in Sekhukhune. “When I am home in Vuwani, I assist different after-school support programmes. The destruction to these schools will be a set-back to many of the learners we support,” said Mokgophi.

Observers added that Limpopo was among the worst-performing provinces in the 2015 academic calendar year and that the destruction of Vuwani schools

Community members of Makhado’s Ward 30 recently met with different government and community stakehold-ers during an imbizo at Vuvha.

Most of the stakeholders showed grati-tude for the service they have been receiv-ing, yet others requested that vital aspects that will assist in developing the commu-nity be addressed. Among the grievances were job provision for the youth and disabled people, sports facilities, mainte-nance of roads to the royal graveyard and decent school infrastructure.

A representative of the school-govern-ing body, Mr Thifulufheli Netshiombo, urged the mayor to ensure that approx-imately six schools within the ward be renovated as the condition of some classes was extremely bad.

“A school like Bele Primary was built

and learning materials would add a big-ger burden to Limpopo’s already ailing education system.

ing to spread across the country and to infl uence the community positively.

Young social-change driver and Vuwani resident Mr Then-do Mapume lays the blame for this stalemate on both residents and the demarcation board for not being able to come up with innovative ways to address the volatile situation. “We feel that the elders, politicians, traditional leaders and the Municipal De-marcation Board have failed us, the young people. It is time that we, as the youth, take this into our own hands and use any means available to help in this situation, such as mobilising for support through social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter.

Rudzani Musamabi Mashau is another young community leader who is taking action against the violent protests in Vuwani. He has been instrumental in arrang-ing a meeting with religious and traditional leaders to fi nd quick solutions to support the affected learners.

Mokgophi, Mapume and Mashau are part of the Activate! Network – a nationwide network of young change drivers (who call themselves Activators) aim-

many years ago and we fear that some of the buildings there may collapse,” said Netshiombo.

“The only development we see so far is at Mathede Secondary school, where mobile classes have been provided as a temporary measure while we wait for proper infra-structure,” he said.

Makhado Mayor David Mu-tavhatsindi assured the com-munity members that although all things would not happen overnight, most of their griev-ances were being attended to. The construction of the road to Vuvha has already been budgeted for in the next fi nancial year, which will provide job opportunities.

Ward 30 councillor Mr Fhu-

mulani Madzhiga said that he was grateful to the members of the community who used the opportunity to communicate directly with their mayor.

Clemour went through, but competition gets toughWaterval-born popular musician Clem-ent “Clemour” Ngobeni went through to the Top-12 stage of M-Net’s TV competition, The Voice South Africa, on Sunday night, but it became clear that he will have to do something exceptional to edge out his competitors.

Clemour was saved by the votes of his dedicated fans last week.

He ousted the popu-lar and highly talented Prime Zulu, but still had to contend with Rich-ard Stirton and Francis Bowers.

Richard was the one who received the nod from coach Kahn Mor-bee, which means that it’s up to Clemour and Francis’s fans to decide their fate in the compe-tition.

On Sunday night, Clemour made a very brave and bold move to render his own ver-sion of the popular award-winning English singer Adele’s Rolling in the deep.

The star from Lim-popo indicated that he was happy with his per-formance, even though he was under a lot of pressure and nervous. “You can just imagine the pressure that came with waiting for the results and performing five or less minutes lat-

er,” said Clemour.Clemour said that he was grateful for

the support that he had received so far from everyone who had voted for him. “Please, please use the various ways to vote for me and support my dream, because only you can make my dream a reality,” he said.

The judges applauded Clemour for his ability to always bring in the element of surprise whenever he is on stage and en-couraged him to work harder on technical difficulties, such as the pronunciation of words.

The voting ended on Thursday night (12th) at 22:00.

The police officers and pathology personnel prepare to lift the corpse into their vehicle.

Body of man found next to Ravele roadThe body of a 42-year-old man was found next to the main road between Ravele and Mad-abani village a fortnight ago. He was found lying on his back in the veldt next to the road and his trousers were torn.

This disturbing discovery was made by community members on Saturday, April 30. The de-ceased was later identified as a resident of Ravele, Mr Thomas Tshivhase.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Sgt Thilivhali Maloa, confirmed the discovery. “So far, we have opened an inquest docket and the police’s investigations are continuing in this matter.”

The deceased’s older brother, David Tshivhase, said that the family believed that Thomas could have been killed some-where else and was dumped on the spot where he was later found. “There were lots of bruises on his hands and around his wrists, which suggest that he might have been first tied up with a wire,” he said.

Residents from the Sinthumule area also raised concerns about the discovery of Thomas’s body. They said it was not the first time that a human being was found dead under mysterious circumstances. There were nu-merous incidents of this nature which had hap-pened through the years.

On 27 April 2014, the naked, lifeless body of Mulalo “Lucia” Mpilo (29) was found in the ear-ly hours of the morning at the football grounds of Madombid-zha Try Again in Madombid-zha village. His clothes and a shoe were found more than 500m away from the scene where his body was found.

The 44-year-

old Mr Shumani Makhadi’s lifeless body was discovered by members who were walking along the street on 2 April this year. There were a lot of stones laying around, which suggested that he could have been stoned to death.

Thomas Tshivhase. The Davhana Development Task Team (DDTT) is calling for the suspension of Chief Davhana David Davhana (68), pending the finalization of his case by the courts.

Davhana is facing charges of being in possession of an unli-censed fire-arm and discharging it in public. This follows an incident on 23 April last year, when the Chief allegedly fired three shots into the air during a meeting held at his kraal. The

meeting, which was attended by officials from Makhado Mu-nicipality, SAPS members from Vuwani and members of DDTT, was about resolving his disagree-ments with the task team.

Davhana had already appeared before the court on 27 Febru-ary this year, and his case was postponed to 20 April. The case could not, however, be heard as Davhana's new lawyer requested a further postponement. The lawyer said that they still wanted

to familiarize themselves with the case.

When he appeared on 25 April, the case was postponed to 20 June for trial.

During Davhana’s last ap-pearance in the Sibasa Regional Court, the court was filled to capacity, mainly by community members who are opposing him. Some of the people who could not get inside the court also waited outside until the case was postponed.

The Budeli family of Tshilapfene outside Thohoyandou are frantically looking for the 14-year-old Rudzani Budeli, who went missing on the morning of 3 May. She left home after telling family members that she was going to attend a wedding that took place not far from her home. According to information given by the police in Thohoyandou, she is of light complexion and of medium height. "She was last seen wearing blue jeans and a pink tracksuit top. She is a pupil of Tshandama Secondary School," said Const Hani Mutele, the Thohoyandou police's spokesperson. People with information regarding her whereabouts are asked to phone the nearest police station or Const Hani at 082 481 2939.

The Southern African Maca-damia Growers’ Association (SAMAC) recently completed a round of data collection with updated crop forecasts from all handlers of macadamia nuts.

“The updated forecast for the 2016 season is approximately

39 000 tonnes of nut in shell (NIS; measured at 1.5% kernel moisture content). This is ap-proximately 15% lower than the 2015 crop of 46 000 t NIS, and down on the initial 2016 forecast of 43 000t,” said SAMAC in ‘n press release.

According to SAMAC, South African handlers have revised their forecasts and all indications are that the drought has affected the industry more severely than initially antic-ipated. Many role players in the industry have indicated a 20% decline in production, compared to

the 2015 season, and reports of up to 50% lower production in some areas.

The reason for the lower ex-pected volumes, said SAMAC chairman Walter Giuricich, could be attributed to higher nut drop and the fact that many nuts are smaller than usual with thicker shells, due to the hot and dry weather conditions. Consequent-ly, lower kernel-recovery rates are being achieved and much lower volumes of kernel can be expected from the South African crop. These factors, as well as high rates of insect damage, most notably late stink bug, will also negatively affect the quantities of kernel being produced and sold in the international market.

“There is a concern that, should the current dry weather conditions prevail, the 2017 crop will also most likely be affected, as dry conditions will not be conducive to achieving good pollination rates,” said SAMAC.

Drought severely affects macadamia crops

The well-known soccer administrator and educator Mr Wilson Mathoma was caught by surprise when his family decided to honour him for his dedication when he celebrated his 50th birthday at Tshiozwi a fortnight ago. In our photo he is assisted by his wife, Takalani, in cutting the birthday cake.

Municipal worker’s vehicle damaged in arson attackA driver employed at the Makhado Municipality, Mr Freddy Khantshi, blames his co-workers for an inci-dent that left his car damaged at his home a fortnight ago.

The municipal workers have been on a go-slow strike for nearly four weeks. Workers have convened reg-ular meetings to find a resolution to the issue of “benchmarking of salaries process”. It was apparently during one of these meetings that Khantshi stood up and voiced his opinion.

“The municipality was offering workers R15 000 each, but other workers were not happy about that,” he said. “I begged their understanding and explained that that amount was better than nothing.”

Khantshi said that he had explained that he had listened to a speech by the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Makoma Grace Makhurupet-

je, when she was addressing people in Mogalakwena Municipality.

“The MEC said that the bench-marking of employees’ salaries would only be done across municipalities in the 2018/2019 financial year for the good of municipal workers. So, when the local municipality offered workers R15 000, I thought it was good that we should consider accepting it and wait for 2018.”

He stated that some workers, who spoke in hushed tones, said that they would burn his property because he was betraying the workers’ union. “I was well informed about the workers who planned to burn my property, but I just took it as a joke because I voiced my opinion in a public space,” he said. “I had no intention to betray any person, and neither did I do any-thing wrong.”

On Friday night, Khantshi was awakened by a strange sound and

A Makhado municipal worker, Mr Freddy Khantshi, says his colleagues tried to set his car alight.

when he peeped out through the window, he saw a big fire in his yard. He got out of bed and rushed out.

“My car was on fire,” he said. “I rushed out of the yard and looked down the street. I saw some-one whom I knew – a colleague in fact – running down the road.”

He ran back into his yard and started extinguish-ing the fire. Soon he heard the sound of a speeding car and rushed outside to investigate. “It was the car of the very man whom I had just seen running down the road,” he said.

He explained that something like a hosepipe had been inserted through a hole drilled along the water pipeline and connected to his car. “That pipe was infused with flammable liquids, so that whoever did this cruel thing had done it from outside the yard,” he said. “This is quite disturbing, though.”

The South African Municipal Workers Union’s chairperson, Mr Lawrence Murovhi, condemned the malicious damage of Khantshi’s property. “At this stage we need to allow the police to do their job,” he said. “However, if ever by any chance our members are behind this evil act, we surely do

not support this kind of action.”

The spokesperson for the Makhado SAPS cluster, W/O Kedibone Mabatha, confirmed that the police had opened a case of malicious dam-age to property. “We are investigation this case and we hope to make an arrest soon,” he said.

A talented producer at Phalapha-la FM, Tosh Gill, had ascribed his popularity and media excellence to hard work and determination.

He told Limpopo Mirror that his love for radio started after his late uncle, Mr Jerry Munene, had told him about his friendship with radio personalities such Jimmy Netshilulu and others. “My uncle had a lot of connections in those days and I envied him because he knew all those people whose voices I only knew through the medium of radio,” he said. “I knew then that I wanted to be like those people who worked harder for the communities they loved.”

A resident of Mashau Mag-weni, he attended Mphagane Pri-mary School and Vhafamadi Sec-ondary School, the very schools that were torched last week. After matriculating, he enrolled for a degree in law at the University of Venda. However, his interest in radio grew so much that he spent much of his time standing peeping into Univen FM’s studios through the window pane.

“One DJ told me that if I was interested in radio I must do media studies,” he said. “So, the following year I quit at Univen and registered for a degree in communication and me-dia studies at the University of Limpopo.”

One day he was making a telephone call at a public phone when one man stood around and listened to his conversation. “It was awkward having a person stand nearby while you were making a call,” he said. “But just after the call, the man introduced himself as Happiness Maake and said I had a voice made for radio. He recruited me to work for Turf Radio. I worked there for around four years during my time at the university.”

After graduating, Tosh Gill joined Capricron FM, where he produced the Ashifa Show.

“I then joined Phalaphala FM in 2013, and worked on Zhalinga on Saturdays and Sundays,” he said. “In that show, I introduced old-school kwaito music and people loved it. After some time, I found myself producing Vhandilani.”

Tosh Gill currently produces Dziaorowa on Monday to Friday (15:00-18:00).

He urges the youth to work hard and make education a fi rst priority in life. “Education is important,” he said. “Radio is a short-term career. Once that job has ended, it’s your end too. People forget about you and it’s

over.”Those words

could not have come from any-

one other than Tosh Gill, who is

resuming his law degree.

In last week's edition of Limpopo Mirror, we published a report on the funeral of a well-known mem-ber of the Adziambei band, Mr Simon Ranwedzi.

According to the report, the mem-bers of the church who attended the

event were members of the the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC). We received information that they are actually members of the Unto the church of God Apostolic Jerusalem in Zion and we want to put the record straight.

Fun-filled fete at RidgewayThe upcoming fete at Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt will provide budding entrepreneurs and established businesses alike with the opportunity to showcase their wares and services. It will take place on 27 and 28 May.

Although the aim of the fete is to generate funds for the college and the independent school, the price of R300 per stall over the two days of the fete will afford artisans, artists and craftspeople of the area the ideal opportunity to gain access to a wider target market.

The only exception in this regard is the provision of certain food products, since the college itself will be respon-sible for doughnuts, boerewors in a roll or with pap, Indian cuisine, var-ious curried meals, and cold drinks. A beer tent will be run by the Round Table and a tea garden will cater for those who wish to sit and relax and have something to eat and drink while listening to the live entertainment.

Aspirant singers will have the opportunity to make use of the open

mike to show what they are capable of.

The fete also promises loads of entertainment for the young ones. A mini-funfair will provide plenty of excitement, with a number of rides as well as a haunted house for the brave and face painting for the adventurous. For the adults and the young at heart, there will be arcade games, pillow fights, sponge throwing, a slingshot competition, a tombola stall and a tug-of-war competition. Local businesses are invited to enter teams for the latter event at a cost of R50 per team.

Dads are invited to visit the car exhibition provided by local dealer-ships, while moms shop around at the clothing and bric-a-brac stalls.

On Friday morning, between 09:00 and 12:00, all local nursery schools are invited to bring the children to the fete, free of charge. Those interested can contact Doret or Charmaine at the school for more information. En-trance at the gates is R20 per person. Dial the school at 015 161 0210 to book a stall or for more information.

New Vhembe Music Association wants to unite artistsThe newly established organisation for Vhembe-based musicians, the Vhembe Music Association (VMA), has finally been registered with the Department of Social Development in a bid to promote

artists' rights and exposure. The secretary of the organisation,

Tshidino Ndou, told Limpopo Mirror that it was important to register the organisa-tion with the department. “We hope that

this move will help us to get our voices heard in many govern-mental and social institutions,” he said. “It is true that when artists get together and speak in one big voice they are likely to be heard.”

He stated that the organisation was registered some three weeks ago and emphasised that it was only when artists were united that they could effectively fight the scourge of piracy. He also indicated that the organisation came into existence during the musicians’ meeting held in Madombidzha on 31 October 2015. “The main reason why this organisation was formed was after we had realised that many artists were suffering as victims of exploitation,” Tshidino added.

He further stated that VMA was the voice of Vhembe artists. “The organisation shall find out why artists are being exploited and come up with possible solutions. As the slogan of the VMA says, Ri vhaimbi, A ri zwilombe meaning, “We are musicians, not minstrels”.

The organisation's chairperson, Musiwalo “Sikheli Junior” Nen-gudza, said that Vhembe musicians were finally united and were now in

a position to speak in one voice. He also added that there was current-

ly no formal business for musicians in Vhembe. “It’s sad that most artists are talented but they always become victims of exploitation,” he said. “We must start taking control of our own music business,” he added.

The Vhembe Music Association will provide advice and music information to artists. Artists who would like to join the VMA can call 079 486 3179 or 073 6120 155. Alternatively, send e-mails to [email protected].

The much-awaited Tshiven-da movie, Vhuhovheleli, was released last week. It took the producers two years to complete the movie.

The comedy, released by Fire-man Production, a new production house in Limpopo, promises to be a big hit. Just a few days after its launch, hundreds of copies have already been sold and the demand is so high that the producers are fi nding it diffi cult to cope.

Rudzani Masevhe, who directed the movie and plays Muthotho in the movie, said they tried to portray topical issues with lessons about life. “It’s about a man who fraud-ulently changes his father’s will to be the sole benefi ciary, which he succeeds in doing. He becomes rich and divorces his wife for a young one, who milks him of all the money and he becomes very poor.”

He added that the movie has many lessons and that they want to spread their message across “in

this way.”Ndivhoniswani Netshamudzin-

ga, one of the lead actors in the drama, who plays Ndivhoniswani, said besides a seasoned producer and actors like Vhakoma, they managed to unearth untapped and raw talent from the villages, who are still full of energy.

“The movie was shot in different locations in the Vhembe area and this is a must-see for everyone. We have done our best and we appreci-ate the support we got from Good Samaritans who went all out to make this dream of ours a reality,” he said.

Those who were fortunate enough to see the fi lm during its launch were full of praises for the new production. “It’s awesome. One would be blown away after watching it and it is hard to believe that it was produced here locally and we appreciate the work these boys are doing,” said Mashudu Masia, who attended the launch.

New kid on the block Batondy wants to promote Venrap internationally.

Rotondwa Silimela, bet-ter known as Batondy, from Ha-Bengwa village at Tshaulu outside Thohoyandou, started singing hip-hop in 2010 when he was 22 years old.

“When I grew up, I was a fan of all music. I later developed a keen interest in hip-hop music, especially Venrap. Although I started as a fan, I later real-ized that there was something missing in this music. I realized that most of Venrap was not appealing to the older audience and many people because of the language used in it.”

He added that he then decided to start a career in singing, with the aim to improve “on this music so that it can be accepted by everyone.”

In 2010, Batondy joined New Sound Records in Sunnyside. He then worked with household names of Venrap such as Fizzy, Kashfl ow, Face Boy, Prifi x and others.

Early this year, he recorded his single called Chitangong, which became a hit. The sin-gle, which was named after the Phalaphala FM sports presenter, Thina Ramantswana, was very popular at the station. “Since the release of this single, I am now able to perform at serious

gigs organized in Vhembe and Gauteng. Wherever I perform, people are excited about my music.” He is now planning to release an album, Venrap Solu-tion, in November and he said that his aim was to see Venrap being recognized worldwide.

Batondy, who has a B Com degree in tourism from the University of Venda, says “ed-ucation must be the fi rst priority before music. Being a musician without education can be very frustrating. You do not need to be a musician to make money, but you must have a qualifi ca-tion that can sustain your life.” Batondy is working for a travel agency in Pretoria.

The long wait is over for fans of hip hop and Venrap artist Geenkon Geefam.

His fans will now have the opportunity to enjoy a collection of good songs from him as he recently launched his debut al-bum, Graduate. The 24-year-old is already famous for releasing hit singles. After being silent for some time, he surprised every-one with the new album.

He grew up listening to the likes of Dan Tshanda and Chico Thwala and he loves local mu-sic. “I have a taste for local art-ists and was inspired by the artist known as Zakwe. He started his music career in 2008.” He said that he was confi dent that his

fi rst album would be very pop-ular and added that many fans praised him for the maturity of his music. “The album carries a strong message of hope and motivation and there is a vibe. I expect people to be transformed after listening to this music,” he explained.

He graduated from the Tshwane University of Technol-ogy last year with a qualifi cation in recreation management, and he said that he worked hard to get the correct balance between his studies and his music career. He said that he decided to name his album Graduate because he graduated last year and that it was the beginning of huge

changes in his life. The album was recorded at Toofab Music Studios. It has 17 tracks and he features some exceptional artists, such as Fizzy, Kashfl ow, Vicious, Mizo Phyll, Meskay and Prifix. His manager, Mr Israel Mureri, said it had always been their aim to spread the message through Venrap music and that South Africans should expect a lot from them. “I am really happy that the album is released. I believe that the album will go platinum,” said Mureri. Those interested in the album can phone Mureri at 082 404 7774 or Solani Ndou at 081 876 2263. The album is also availa-ble at local music stores.

Family members, under lead-ership of Chief Nndweleni Mp-haphathi, attended the court hear-ing in the hope that there will be developments in the murder case against the 36-year-old alleged killer, Lufuno Khangale.

Chief Mphaphathi said that he was hoping to hear the accused

being questioned on the charges he was facing, but instead, all that happened was that the alleged killer made a brief appearance in court and asked to be represented by a state attorney.

The Ward 27 councillor in the Thulamela municipality, Mr Livhuwani Maduse, also attended the hearing. He said that they would support the family and he maintained that they would do everything they could to ensure that the accused was not granted

bail.“We need Lufuno to reveal

his accomplices, so that they can be removed from the commu-nity and join him in jail,” said Maduse. “We want justice for Rolivhuwa and her family.”

The alleged killer arrived in court sporting a neater look. He had shaved off his hair (dread-locks) and he looked lighter in complexion.

The case was postponed until 10 June.

More than 300 students from various schools in the Botlokwa (Matoks) community, particularly Grade 12s with maths and science as subjects, attended a career day on 30 April to explore various career opportunities. The event was organised by the Botlokwa Investing in Youth Organization. Institutions who provided career guidance included UNISA, UJ, Transnet, UP, SAMSA, Molemole Municipality, UNIVEN, Ekurhuleni College, Capricorn FET, ABSA Bank and the South African Air Force (SAAF). UAAC wants to improve lives of citizens

Damaged bridge “causing accidents”

The United African Apostolic Church (UAAC) celebrated its 104th anniversary with huge celebrations at its headquar-ters at Makungwi-Ha Miriri on Sunday.

The church was founded in 1912 by Bishop Paulos Mureri.

Representatives from other churches, the SAPS, government departments, traditional leaders and dignitaries from different municipalities also attended the event.

According to the leader of the church, Bishop Elias Miriri, the celebrations were aimed at com-memorating the achievements and milestones of the church since its establishment in 1912. The celebrations were also at-

tended by dignitaries from both the business and private sector and people from the entertain-ment industry attended and en-tertained the guests.

“This church has worked so hard to change the lives of the villagers around Limpopo and outside. We have fought against poverty by implementing differ-ent community projects and we are still going to make sure that the lives of our fellow human be-ings are improved. It is our duty to unify the nation and we believe that we are still going to contrib-ute more to the development of the community. Our mission is to save the spirits of human beings, but it is also important to cater for their physical needs. That is one

of the reasons why our church is wholly involved in community development,” Miriri said.

Vhavenda King Toni Mphep-hu Ramabulana, who was accom-panied by many senior traditional leaders, said it was the collective responsibility of the church, community structures and the SAPS to fight against crime and to prevent moral degeneration.

“The traditional leaders are highly disappointed by the alarm-ing crime rate, but we believe that the church will also assist us in building a crime-free com-munity.”

He also encouraged the com-munity members to blow the whistle if they see criminal ac-tivities in their villages.

Residents in the Kutama area are concerned about the damaged bridge on the R523 road. The bridge is between Tshikwarani village and Louis Trichardt. So far, according to local motorists, the bridge had caused many serious car accidents and has claimed at least three lives.

“We are afraid that, if the gov-ernment does not fix this bridge, more lives are going to be lost,” said a resident, Mr Gilbert Mu-ofhe. “This is one of the busiest main roads in the country and a lot of people who use this road are just first-timers who do not know about the fallen bridge.”

Conservation agriculture in the spotlightThe Department of Agriculture and Rural De-velopment (DARD) hosted its annual farming awareness campaign last Friday at the Tok Barnard farm near Louis Trichardt.

The theme of the awareness campaign was “conservation agriculture as a strategy to mitigate climate change.”

The campaign was launched in 2014 by DARD. This is the first time that the event has been hosted in the Makhado Municipality.

Mrs Gloria Nekhavhambe, a delegate from DARD, said that it would take some time for the awareness campaign to bear fruit, because the concept of Conservation Agriculture (CA) was still new and many people did not know about it.

Mr Michael Netshivhodza explained that CA aims to achieve sustainable and profitable agri-culture by promoting three principles: minimum soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotation.

Netshivhodza said that the introduction of minimum soil disturbance or no tillage was to curb this negative impact on the soil and also to improve the quality of soil structure needed for plant growth without disturbing it. He added that permanent soil cover served as a layer on the soil surface and acted as mulch for the soil which had not been tilled or had minimum tillage. “The soil layer is protected from the physical impact of rain and wind, but it also stabilizes the soil moisture and temperature in the surface layers,” he said.

He said that diversified crop rotation promoted a healthy living soil. These practices decreased the need for pesticides and herbicides, controlled off-site pollution, and enhanced biodiversity. “The application of a diversified crop rotation increases the overall productivity of the cropping system and, as such, also the long-term profitabil-

Mrs Gloria Nekhavhambe addresses the people on the use of a tractor.

ity, compared to mono-cropping of economically attractive cash crops, which in the long term, always proves not sustainable,” he added.

Mr Edward Tshikumbane, a member of the Marandela Communal Property Association in which Tok Barnard’s farm operates, said that farming in the communities these days was not always taken seriously. He also added that farm-ing was the backbone of life.

Mr Tok Barnard delivers a speech at the event.

Mr Stephen Mbelengwa, said that the bridge had cost him a long-time friend whom he loved. “This bridge had killed my best friend, Mr Kenneth Thwalima, some three years ago,” he said. “I thought that the district munic-ipality would do something about the bridge since this problem had been pointed out to the district mayor’s office during an imbizo in our area.”

“There is no proper visible signage showing that there is a dangerous bridge ahead,” said Mbelengwa. “And during the night it is very dangerous. My best friend’s life was stolen by that bridge. My question is how many people must die so that that bridge

and that road can be repaired?”The spokesperson for the

Roads Agency Limpopo, Mr Maropeng Manyathela, said that the office’s team had visited the affected bridge a fortnight ago. “Our engineers have been to the site last week for an assessment, after the matter was brought to our attention,” he said. “The bridge will be repaired in the 2016/17 financial year.”

Mbelengwa described the Roads Agency’s promise to repair the bridge in the current financial year as a “vague expres-sion”. “We need a definite date for the start of the construction on that bridge and not just de-partmental rhetoric,” he fumed.

A resident and motorist, Mr Gilbert Muofhe, stands on the damaged bridge.

Heaps of used disposable nappies that were dumped next to houses. Residents are saying they can no longer stand the stench caused by these disposable nappies

Medical waste dumping in the Vhembe area is fast becoming a very serious challenge and a much-talked-about topic in the area.

Incidents of careless dumping have been reported in different areas in recent times, sparking an outcry in the community. Not long ago, a heap of used nee-dles and syringes was found at Siawoadza in Tshisahulu outside Thohoyandou.

Children were found playing at the dump and it was not imme-diately known if they were play-ing with the needles. Residents blamed the local Tshilidzini Hos-pital for being responsible for the dumping, while others blamed doctors in private practices.

As if that was not enough, res-idents had a rude awakening after four bakkie loads of used dispos-able nappies were discovered at the same village on Friday. The

big dump was discovered by passing residents next to the Pali Stadium in Tshaulu.

A resident, Ms Thifheli Tshilate (24), who stays next to the stadium, said they had had enough of the waste that was de-liberately being dumped on their doorstep by people who knew they were doing wrong. “A year ago, our children were exposed to the high risk of infections after used syringes were dumped here in the vicinity.

Some were found playing at the site, and luckily no one was hurt, but it would be a very sad day if our innocent children are deliberately infected with dis-eases because of careless people. With the recent heap, we suspect that someone who has a contract with local hospitals could be responsible. A blue bakkie was spotted offl oading the waste four times.”

Another resident, Aifheli Mu-dau, said people did not care about the health of others. “How can a normal person dump dis-posable nappies here where people stay? It shows inhumanity and we are calling on the author-ities to make illegal dumping a punishable offence and maybe it would end,” she said.

While this paper was still at the site where the nappies had been dumped, two bakkies full of Thulamela municipal workers arrived, but they left the place without touching a thing, saying they did not have safety gloves and could not touch the used nappies with their bare hands.

Community leader Michael Gumula also condemned the dumping of waste in residential areas. “This is unacceptable. As a community we have to devise measures to stop this once and for all,” he said.

Timbercity Louis Trichardt donated a pallet of cement to the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC) in Nzhelele. The cement was used to build a stage for the 104-year-celebration function held last Sunday. Photographed during the event and standing on the stage are, from left to right, Dovhani Manyatshe, Daisy Timbani, Emmanuel Ramudzuli, Cedric Khorommbi and Robert Rerani.

Min Faith takes digital TV to MalulekeResidents of Maluleke in Lim-popo will soon benefi t from the long-awaited Digital Terrestri-al Television (DTT).

Today (Friday) Communica-tions Minister Faith Muthambi will take the DTT awareness campaign to the village situated north of the Kruger National Park. “With the advanced mod-ern technology, the traditional analogue broadcast system is now becoming out of fashion, so we will use this event to tell villagers what they will need to allow analogue television own-ers to receive digital television signals when South Africa’s broadcast migration happens,” Muthambi said in a statement.

“The world is going through a television revolution of mi-grating from analogue to digital broadcasting. Digital broad-casting technology is superior to analogue broadcasting tech-nology, with the latter slowly being phased out worldwide,” she added.

The world of broadcasting is going through a profound change, as a result of the devel-opment of digital technology.

The registration of house-holds that qualify to receive free subsidised government aid for the change to DTT will also take place during the campaign. During her budget speech last week, Muthambi announced that the government will announce the analogue signal switch-off date when more than 80% of households have migrated to digital TV.

Muthambi said that, following the slow registration take-up [STBs] by citizens due to the TV license requirement and insuffi -cient funding to conduct public and consumer awareness cam-paigns together with the SABC, they have since resolved to delink the TV license requirement from the STB subsidy registration process.

“I have also instructed the SABC to clean-up the TV license

database in order to have accurate and reliable information on who owns a TV set in South Africa to enable proper infrastructure planning,” she added.

Minister Faith Muthambi.

Makhovha Stars shine bright over Manguvhewa

Highlands Park again too good for Leopards

Makovha All Stars deposited full points into their league account, following their 2-1 victory over Dididi Manguvhewa FC in their MMK Administrators League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

The game was played at a see-saw pace, with both sides creating and wasting their scoring chanc-es. Manguvhewa realized that it was not their day

when they lost a fortune nine minutes into the game. Foster Makamu received a pre-cooked pass from Stanley Mathoma but shot wide with the keeper already beaten.

The Stars were the first to blow the trumpet. Itumeleng Netswinga was on target with a header in the 24th minute. Netswinga finished the ball off, following a scramble within the box. As if they were already certain of victory, the players of Stars relaxed with the ball within their own danger area. They were punished for that.

Lyod Nduma, Manguvhewa’s lethal striker, forced his way through the defence of Stars and beat the keeper with a ground cutter in the 38th minute to bring the half-time score to 1-1.

Manguvhewa introduced Abraham Tshishonga and sacrificed Stanley Mathoma three minutes into the last half. The Stars responded by effecting three changes to their starting 11. They replaced Rodney Mmbengwa, Itumeleng Netswinga and Tshilidzi Ngobeli with Richard Chauke, Thendo Phalanndwa and Rendani Masindi respectively.

The goal that earned Stars three vital points came in the 78th minute. Kenneth Chuma sent the keeper the wrong way with a close-range half volley. The

Stars played defensive football for the remain-ing part of the game.

Tshilidzi Ngobeli of Stars (front) and Ntikelo Hobyane of Manguvhewa chase the ball.

Highlands Park used Black Leopards as their stepping stone to the top of the log when then beat them 2-0 in their NFD First Division League match at the Makhulong Sta-dium in Thembisa on Sat-urday.

Samukelo Nkosi scored the home side’s opening goal in the 18th minute. Leopards took the game to the hosts in the dying minutes of the first half, but their strikers were unlucky.

Leopards’ diminutive strik-er, Bongani Manana, could not believe his eyes when his ground cutter missed the target by inches.

Highlands Park increased the margin through Mvala Motho-bi, whose banana kick was too good for the Leopards’ keeper, Avhashoni Tshinuna, to han-dle. Highlands Park beat Black Leopards by the same margin in their first-round league match at the Thohoyandou Stadium five months ago.

Mbombela United pushed African Warriors deep into the relegation zone when they brutally walloped them 5-3 at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit.

Lebohang Moboe scored United’s opening goal in the

ninth minute. Thamsanga Nge-ma scored the Warriors’ equal-izer six minutes later.

Bheki Malida put Mbombela back in front with a volley, but Bonginkosi Xumalo scored the equalizer for Warriors moments thereafter.

Victor Shongwe put United in the driver’s seat from the penalty spot and Siyethemba Mnguni scored the fourth in the 74th minute before Mlungisi Nkosi found the fifth in the 78th minute. Mzwandile Qole scored the third for the Free State side late in the game.

In their Cape Town derby at the Athlone Stadium, Cape Town All Stars beat FC Cape Town 2-0.

The pace setters, Baroka FC, strengthened their chances of gaining automatic promotion to the elite league by beating Witbank Spurs 1-0 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Vasco da Gama beat Royal Eagles 2-0 at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town.

Moroka Swallows donated league points to Santos, who beat them 0-1 at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. Ama-zulu lost 0-1 to Milano United in Durban after a 10th-minute goal by Gregory Roelf.Samukelo Nkosi scored Highlands Park’s opening goal.

Baroka ready to shock Supersport UtdThe long-awaited Nedbank Cup semifinal matches will be played tomorrow. Baroka FC, who carry the hopes of the people of Limpopo, will battle it out against the Absa Premiership side, Supersport United, at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Baroka’s track record in the competition speaks volumes. They beat three Absa Premiership sides on their way to the semifinals. The Polok-wane-based NFD team beat Chippa United 3-2, Lamontville Golden Arrows 2-0 and Polokwane

City 2-0 during their highly successful campaign.Baroka will pin their hopes on Loyiso Simandla

and Thabiso Kutumela for goals, while the com-bination of Ndivhuwo “Segere” Ravhuhali and Tsepo Matete is expected to keep their danger area clean. Baroka must keep a watchful eye on the Zimbabwean bulldozer striker of Supersport, Kingston Nkhatha, or else it will be the end of their Nedbank Cup road.

Supersport beat Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-1 in their quarterfinal match.

The game is scheduled to kick off at 20:15. In the other semifinal match that will be played tomorrow afternoon, Free State Stars will host Orlando Pirates at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem. Stars beat Bidvest Wits 5-4 on their way to the semis, while the Buccaneers’ way to the semifinal went via Mamelodi Sundowns, whom they beat 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

The champions will receive R7 million.

Mandala Chief celebrates with the ladiesChief Dzumbuluwani Tshi-vhase of Mandala village joined the celebrations with women’s soccer teams from the village a fortnight ago, after one of the teams, Man-dala Hot Chilli, recently won a tournament.

The chief supplied enough meat and invited all three teams from the village to join the cel-ebrations. He said that he had noticed that the women in his area were passionately partici-pating in soccer, which touched

his heart and he felt the need to celebrate with them.

The councillor for Ward 27 in the Thulamela municipality, Mr Livhuwani Maduse, presented a soccer kit and soccer ball to Mandala Hot Chilli during the event. “I don’t want to see these women running around she-beens. That is why I requested Mulaudzi Transport Services and NJ Munyamela Electrical to donate soccer kit to encourage the women to continue playing soccer,” said Maduse.

One of the sponsors, Bishop Joel Mulaudzi, indicated that he deemed it fit to support the teams as they also supported his transport services.

The captain of Mandala soc-cer team, Shonisani Nemaname, expressed her gratitude to Chief Tshivhase and the sponsors. “We have been honoured. It sounded like a joke when our Chief said he would slaughter a cow for us, but he did more than he said he would for us,” said Nemaname.

The affiliates of the National First Division will play their second-last league matches this weekend. All matches will be played on Sunday afternoon.

It will be the last time that the fans of Black Leopards will see their team playing at home this season. Lidoda Duvha will host Santos at the Thohoyandou Stadium. Leopards lost 0-2 to Highlands Park at the Makhu-long Stadium in Thembisa last Saturday. On the other hand, Santos are in winning mode after beating Moroka Swallows 1-0 at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town last Saturday.

It remains to be seen wheth-er the Santos coach, Mr Zeca Marques, will manage to steer his side to victory over his for-mer employers, Black Leopards. Marques was the Leopards’ head coach before joining the Cape Town side early this season.

Cape Town All Stars will fight for league points with Amazulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium. Things are not going according to plan in the Amazulu camp. They lost their second consecu-

tive league match last Saturday, when Milano United beat them 0-1 at home.

Witbank Spurs will host Royal Eagles. Spurs and Eagles are close contenders for a place in the promotional play-offs. Mbombela United will un-dertake a journey to Cape Town, where they will lock horns with FC Cape Town at the NNK Rugby Stadium.

T h e C a p e Town derby be-t w e e n M i l a n o United and Vasco da Gama will be staged at the Ath-lone Stadium. Da Gama registered victories in their last three league matches. Mthatha Bucks will host Highlands Park at the Mthatha Stadi-um, while Moroka Swallows will en-

tertain Thanda Royal Zulu at the Dobsonville Stadium. Swallows must win the match in order to enhance their chances of escap-ing the relegation axe at the end of the season.

He said that his team must at-tack and score more goals if they wished to progress further. “The players are young and inexperi-enced but have been playing for a few years now, so they know each other well. I can see them getting more and more confident as the days progress,” he added.

The players on whom they will pin their hopes include Leavy Matshavha, Rendani Mudau, Lennox Mabila and Sydney Luvhengo.

Mr Thikhedzo Mashau, the spokesperson of United Artists,

who are representing Stream C for the fourth successive year, vows to do things differently this year. “I’ve told my boys that we can perform well this year if we are focussed and give our best. We are ready for the final battle. By winning this year’s players play-off, we will not only make ourselves proud, but the commu-nity as well,” says Mashau.

The coach of Musina United (Stream H), Mr Thomas Mudau, also acknowledged that they had learnt from their league games and would have a different ap-proach in their play-off matches. “The boys have to master the art of concentration and to focus. I have therefore prepared them mentally not to make simple mistakes.” Mudau is also aware that his squad will have to score goals and match their opponents’ strength in every game in order to proceed to the win the play-off.

According to Coach Petrus Chauke of Rambuda FC (Stream I), everything is going smoothly with their preparations and they continued to train as usual. He added that they had played a

number of friendly matches during the past weeks as part of their preparations for the play-offs. The manager of Matsika Shooting Stars, Mr Shumani Das-wa, said that they had put aside some attractive incentives for the players in case they managed to gain promotion.

He stated that the team had been training hard for the past three weeks. When asked about their secret weapons, Daswa said that all the players were razor sharp.

The other teams in the play-offs are Tshakhuma na Ndilani, Wayeni Sea Robbers, Madritas and Tshivhiludulu Hungry Lions.

According to Mr Mulimisi Muneri of Safa Vhembe, the tournament will be played in a round-robin format, with each team playing four matches. The top team at the end of the play-offs will represent Safa Vhembe in the provincial play-offs with the other four winners from the different districts.

The eventual winner will par-ticipate in the ABC Motsepe league.
