Plain Truth

➡ The quest for morality

Insist in premarital counsellingPastors and churches must insist on premarital counseling before they marry couples. This will go a long way to curb one of the identified factors with regard to the divorce rate, which is on the rise in our country.

We should also insist that those who had married without premarital counselling should seriously consid-er taking marriage counselling to orientate themselves regarding the institution of marriage – the ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ involved. I recently made a shocking discovery when working with married young urban-ites. Most of them are going through rough times – facing storms in their marriage. Most of them would have just moved in and stayed together as husband and wife, in what is commonly known as ‘vat-en-sit’ (cohabitation), or moved in after paying ‘lobola’ under the pretext of ‘customary marriage’. Even those who were married in the church pointedly revealed to me that they were married without proper coun-selling having been conducted. What is it that they have missed in premarital counselling?

Premarital counselling provides couples with the opportunity to get to know one another better than when one engages in a courtship without proper counselling. One gets to know one’s faith, character and aspirations with regard to the future, and indeed one’s strong points and weaknesses. This helps one to determine the question of compatibility. It is very difficult to be in a marriage context with someone one is not compatible with in many respects. Love alone is not enough when one is in a marriage with someone one cannot easily communicate with. By this I mean real communication, where one does not just greet each other but also share everything. Why do you want to be in a marriage with someone who will only greet you or only talk to you when he or she wants sex behind a closed door in the dark? I also find it hard to provide counselling to two different people – one talkative and one who will talk (giving brief and direct answers) only when prompted to do so. I will come back to the communication issue in the future.

Premarital counseling provides space to determine one’s readiness. There are people who get married whilst they are not yet ready or ripe for such a commitment. A person

who gets married must, for instance, show maturity in terms of his or her understanding of marriage, including one’s understanding that marriage as a life-long institution – "until death do us part". Marriage is not a trial and error thing where you can decide to take a break to create space for one another or try and find one another in the process of taking a break. Once you make a choice and commit by tying the knot, you need to know that there is no return. The only exception is in the case of persistent adultery – Matthew 19 only allows divorce to take place in the case of adultery, especially when reconciliation is impossible.

Premarital counselling provides space for one to get to understand the basics of marriage, in line with God’s will as revealed in the Scrip-tures. I will deal with this compre-hensively in the next article, when reflecting on the issue of ‘marrying for the wrong reasons’. Premarital counselling does not only offer one space to learn more about the basic principles regarding marriage, but also on the issues involved, such as developing a common philosophy with regard to love, marriage, sex, children, communication, problem solving, friends, parental involve-ment, finances and so on.

Some of these issues sound very minor in terms of trying to spend time in premarital counselling to understand them, but I see them as the key to unlocking the riddle behind divorce. They are like small foxes; if left unattended, they can spoil the blossoming vineyard, thereby ensuring bad harvest. Take for instance the example of a true African man who last told his wife that he loved her the day that he proposed to her. It is critical in pre-marital counselling to engage on this issue and encourage him to use ‘love language’ regularly to spice things up and to safeguard his marriage.

I know of people who are being called ‘honey’, ‘sweetie’, ‘babes’ and so on out there, whilst they have never heard these words from their spouse. It is therefore my conten-tion in this article that premarital counseling can go a long way in providing us with a lasting solution in our efforts to curb the high rate of divorce in our times. The struggle to save marriages continues, until next week! - Prof Derrick Mashau, Department of Christian Spiritual-ity, Church History and Missiology, UNISA. ([email protected].)

Members of the police and forensic services carry the body of Tshililo Muelelwa.

Joyful laughter turned into screams of terror when a 21-year-old man, Tshil-ilo Muelelwa, who was swimming in a stream at Mpheni, drowned on Sunday.

Tshililo and a friend went to the stream to swim. The swimming experience, how-ever, turned into a nightmare. His friend tried to save his life, but the water was too deep and murky.

He then decided to run to the settlement to attract the attention of fellow commu-

nity members. The police were called, but when they

arrived at the scene, it was already dark and Tshililo was nowhere to be found.

Community and family members slept at the stream until police divers arrived on Monday morning. They later retrieved his body

Insp Kedibone Mabatha, communica-tions officer of the Waterval SAPS, said the police were investigating the incident.

He appealed to children not to play along-side streams or on river banks, or to swim without the supervision of older people.

With the very hot weather currently be-ing experienced around the province, the police say they expect that more children will try to cool down by going for a swim.

Family representatives said they were still shocked about the incident. He will be buried at the Mpheni cemetery next Saturday (28/9).

Cable thieves can’t resist temptation at boxes

The electric box near the Madombidzha pump station is becoming a regular spot for a visit by cable thieves. At the box is Mr David Mukosi, Vhembe District Municipality's (VDM) manager of water services in Makhado just after the second-last incident. Electricity falls under the auspices of the Makhado municipality.

The cables at the electric box near the Madombidzha pump station and the pump station itself seem to be a nev-er-ending attraction for cable thieves, who visit on a near monthly basis.

The Makhado Municipality reported that the cable from the transformer to the meter box (numbered P14) was stolen on 26 June and that the cable was replaced the next day. The cost, inclusive of ma-

terial, labour and transport, was around R9 000. “To prevent a reoccurrence, the MV cut outs were tied down,” said Makhado spokesperson Louis Bobodi on 27 August in answer to questions sent on 1 August.

The questions had been posed directly after the shocking van-dalising of the Madombidzha pump station, a few metres away from the pole with the electric box. The estimated damage at the pump station was R700 000, not including the inconvenience for those not receiving water pumped from the station. That incident occurred at the end of July. Before the pump station was vandalized, the cable thieves had tampered with the electric box to shut down the power supply to the pump station. This time around, they fortunately did not manage to shut down the power supply to Madombidzha as well.

“The electricians took out the fuses to prevent anyone from shutting down the power to the village. The thieves had to be very clever to cut the power to the pump station without harming themselves,” said one of the workers at the scene.

Last week it was discovered that the cable thieves had struck again at the same spot. “At the big yellow box, all the cables were stolen as well as the switch gears, the soft starter and the level sensor,” said Mr David Mukosi, Vhembe District Municipality's (VDM) manager of water services in Makhado on 11 September and confirmed that only the power supply to the pump station had been affected. The incident was reported to the district munic-ipality. So far, the brand new equipment that was stolen at the pump station in July had not been replaced.

Though the upgrading of security had already been announced by the Vhembe municipal manager, Mr Masala Maku-mule, on 14 July, it does not seem to have hit the ground at Madombidzha pump station. Neither do the measures of the local municipality to prevent a reoccur-rence seem to be succeeding in providing a deterrent to cable thieves. Electricity falls under the auspices of the Makhado Municipality.

The deceased, Mr Mackson Maluleke, who was cut into pieces at Mashobye.

The devastated family gather for a family meeting to prepare for the funeral of the two victims.

The suspect’s mother, who stays at Makhuvha outside Tho-hoyandou, said she received a call from her brother and niece on Saturday to say the suspect had called them and sworn at them. “I knew that he wasn’t right and that his mental illness was taking over. I had planned to come on Monday to take him to the hospital for his medication. Unfortunately I was late, and he allegedly committed the grue-some killings,” she said.

She said the whole issue dev-astated her as it could have been averted. “We were at peace at home at Makhuvha when he told me that he wanted to be next to

his father, and I could not deny him that right. The problem is that he had not been taking his medication for some time. Had he been taking his medication, the two people would still be alive,” she said. The suspect’s brother said he has no doubt that the kill-ings “have to do with his mental condition. He had been a mental patient for more than 18 years.” Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi stated that they had arrested a 37-year-old suspect in connection with the two murders. “He will appear in court soon and will be charged with two counts of murder,” said Mulaudzi.

SAPS to investigate more cases of rape

Healer arrested for killing woman during exorcism

5-Year-old girl killed when fire destroys room

The SAPS at Tshilwavhusiku has decried the ongoing inci-dents of rape in the Sinthumule and Kutama area and warns perpetrators to stop attacking and raping the residents.

This follows after a 58-year-old woman was allegedly raped while busy collecting firewood in the bushes at Gogobole village on 30 August at about 12:30.

According to the Tshil-wavhusiku police’s spokesper-son, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, the woman was chopping up a tree when she heard a voice or-

dering her to take off her clothes. When she turned to look

around, a totally naked male stranger grabbed her by the neck and pushed her to the ground. He then snatched the panga out of her hand and threatened to chop her head off if she shouted for help.

“He allegedly forced the vic-tim to take off her clothes and commanded her to lie down, and then he raped her,” said Marindi.

During Women’s Month, more incidents of rape were reported at the Tshilwavhusiku police

station. It includes the rape of an

85-year-old lady, who was at-tacked and raped while returning from a church service.

No suspects have been arrested in connection with both inci-dents. “We are sending a very serious message to the perpetra-tors that they must stop what they are doing,” Marindi warned. “We are busy investigating and trying to identify the suspects behind these incidents, so that we may create a safe environment for law-abidding residents.”

A Beit Bridge traditional healer was arrested for allegedly killing a “demon-possessed” woman during a botched ritual to drive out evil spirits.

The bizarre incident occurred on Sun-day in the border town.

Police spokesperson Insp Philisani Ndebele said Cephas Ncube (50), a tradi-tional healer, was arrested after the death of Tsebi Nyathi (30) of Manyani village outside Beit Bridge.

“Sometime in August this year, Nyathi visited her relative, Kayiso Tlou, and stayed there. During this month, Nyathi developed a mental problem. On 8 Sep-

tember, Nyathi’s relative, Ruth Moyo (54), and Lesedi Mdlongwa, both of Tsokotsoko village, took Nyathi to Ncu-be’s homestead, since he is a traditional healer, so that the evil spirits could be exorcised,” said Ndebele.

While there, Ncube then prepared ev-erything needed to cast out the evil spirits to “free” Nyathi.

“The suspect made fire and threw some herbs on it and forced Nyathi to inhale the smoke while covered with a blanket. Nyathi resisted, but Ncube, Moyo and Mdlongwa grabbed her and forced her to inhale the smoke.

During the struggle, Nyathi sustained some facial burns and died the following day,” said Ndebele.

A report on the matter was made to the police. Ndebele said police discovered that Nyathi had died as a result of serious facial burns sustained during the ritual. He said investigations were carried out, leading to the arrest of Ncube. Ncube appeared in court on charges of murder and the case was postponed to 15 October.

Ndebele said the incident was due to negligence and advised community members to desist from practices that put lives at risk.

Ms Cecilia Sigebe of Tshamutavha village in the Niani area and Mr Sunnyboy Charles Shoba from Kwaggafontein in Mpumalanga said “Yes, I do,” during a glittering ceremony held at Tshamutavha village a fortnight ago.

A five-year-old girl, Karabo Saphin-yana, burnt to death last Wednesday night, when a fire spread through a room of the Khorombi house in Dzanani village.

Three children were sleeping in the house and two were lucky to escape the inferno. At the time of going to press, the

cause of the fire was not known, and it was speculated that it could have been an electrical fault.

The uncle of three children who were asleep in the same room that night tried to save their lives and managed to assist two in getting out of the room. Damage to the possessions in the room is estimated

Naked man found in local clothing storeNews of a naked man who was found hiding beneath the shelves at a clothing store ran like wildfire throughout the Shoprite Taxi Rank in Makha-do last Friday.

Soon there was a large crowd of curious onlookers who came and gathered outside the entrance to the Check-U Hawker Centre.

They waited anxiously for the closed doors to be flung open from the inside, so that they could storm inside and start searching for the naked thief. “We’ll beat him to death,” some were heard saying.

The store operators remained behind the closed doors and only allowed some of their workers to slip inside quickly.

“Why do you protect him?” shouted a man and more voices joined in the chorus. “Let the thief walk out. He must get a lesson that will teach him not to steal again,” another shouted and those around agreed with her statement.

Even though the al-leged thief was still held captive inside the store for his own safety, pic-tures of a stark naked man, alleged to be the thief, were doing rounds from one cell phone to the other through Blue-tooth and MMS service, so that even people who were far away in the vil-lages at that time started receiving such images.

When the store fi-nally opened its doors, people flooded the store and started searching for the thief inside the offices, storerooms and toilet. They were left disappointed when they couldn’t find him.

It later appeared that the store operators had let the alleged thief es-cape through the back door.

“You wanted to kill

him?” a store manager asked after an enquiry by the journalist. “We felt that we had to protect him, but next time he might not be that lucky if he continues with his habit.”

On Fridays, a large number of the businesses in Makhado close at around 12:30 in preparation for prayer at the mosque. Thieves seize this opportunity by entering into businesses shortly before they close. They hide under the shelves and when everyone has left, they go for the tills. They later exit the building, using a back door.

Check-U’s supervisor, Khathu Nemandivhe, said that it was not the first time that a thief had entered the store. “Some three weeks ago, a thief entered the store and stole a large amount of money from the safe,” Neman-divhe said.

He added that Check-U was in possession of a video clip in which the alleged thief could be seen naked and crawling along the floor into the office which houses a safe.

In the clip, the thief later wait-ed for the shop to open again, and then mixed with the buyers and exited the store like any other customer.

“We want to warn all other thieves that they mustn’t come and play in our stores,” he said. “Check-U is one of the biggest employers in this town, with a lot of employees who depend on Check-U to maintain their families, and everybody should respect that.”

The store’s management added that they had decided not to lay any criminal charges against the thief, because they hoped that he had learned his lesson.

People flooded the Check-U Hawker Centre and started searching for the naked thief.

The naked thief was found inside Check-U Hawker Centre on Friday.

New skills will ensure a bright futureStudents who received IT their qualifications during a ceremo-ny at the Thasululo FET Col-lege in Tshisahulu last Friday said the qualifications were just a stepping stone towards a prosperous future.

The joy of the students, staff and parents was there for ev-eryone to see when they danced and ululated throughout when the 30 students were called to the podium to receive their certificates. The students under-went 18 months of training in IT International Computer Driving Licence, IT System Support, IT Technial Support and Media Information Communication Technology.

Lodwick Munyai (25) of Elim in the Makhado area, who has been named as one of the best students at the college, said the qualification he received

would ensure that he could be on his own and ready for the job market. “Today’s world needs technology. With the skills that I have acquired here, I am ready for the challenge. I do not only want to find a job, but I want to make a meaningful change in the world and come up with new innovative inventions that will help mankind,” he said.

Munyai and another student, Petunia Nemalegeni of Itsani, received special mention from college rector Mr Alfred Netsh-isumbewa during the ceremony, for having designed a wonderful IT laboratory which earned the college second position among the country’s FET colleges.

He encouraged fellow students to go out and make a meaningful contribution in their communities by starting their own businesses that will benefit their people. “We

have the foundation. We can take it from here and I am going to study further and attain my dream of being an IT specialist,” he said.

College rector Mr Alfred Net-shisumbewa said as a college they would always strive for the best-quality education that would make an impact in the economy of the country.

The guest speaker, Mr Nkhum-buleni Nemakonde, encouraged the recipients to give back to their communities which helped them achieve what they had. “You did not attain what you have by mistake. There were many sacri-fices, and now is the time to give back the community that helped you, otherwise your education would be meaningless if it did not benefit the community. You are now empowered; please make use of the skills in changing the world,” he said.

Happy students show off their certificates. They posed with the college management and guests during the ceremony.

High achievers Mr Lodwick Munyai (second from right) and Ms Petunia Nemalegeni (right) received special awards during the ceremony. Sharing their joy are college rector Mr Alfred Netshisumbewa (left) and guest speaker Mr Nkhumbuleni Nemakonde.

Digital technology available at MadimboThe rural community of Mad-imbo will now be able to access the latest technology after they were presented with a Digital Doorway Unit by the Depart-ment of Rural Development and Land Reform. The unit is housed at Madimbo Thusong Service Centre.

The Digital Doorway (DD) is a self-contained new computer unit, designed to be located in areas without electricity or suitable shelter. The roof of the housing is laid with solar panel strips, which charge batteries secured within the unit itself. The unit has three computers, so it can be used by more than one person at a time. All three computers are connected to a built-in server inside the unit.

The new technology with Internet connectivity has a steel enclosure with vandal-proof metal keyboards, LCD screens protected by reinforced glass,

webcam speakers and two so-lar-powered colour photocopi-ers. The deputy director of rural infrastructure and development in the Department of Rural De-velopment and Land Reform in Limpopo, Joe Mokhomole, says the programme’s key objective is to provide Internet access to people living in remote commu-nities. “The DD unit provides awareness and opportunities for remote areas in a variety of ways. For instance, people at a remote indigenous community can use the DD unit for educa-tional websites, entertainment such as YouTube, social net-working sites, online chats, online banking and other social media initiatives.”

He says people can also use the DD unit for online voice and video chatting with friends and family members. “Internet ac-cess will also help them to keep an eye on what is happening

around them.”Mokhomole says that, besides

the Madimbo DD, his depart-ment has provided three other units around Limpopo. “We had delivered one at Makuya village and two more in the Sekhukhune area. We have earmarked two more sites for delivery in the near future and we continue to engage with other predominantly rural areas to see how we can assist.” Local ward councilor Fistos Mafela was over the moon about the new development. “Today’s life is based on technology and the initiative will go a long way in improving the lives of our peo-ple. Despite our rural location, we will now be on par with our counterparts in urban areas about what is happening around the world. The technology will help improve the lives of many community members in and around Madimbo village.”

Cllr Fistos Mafela (left) and Madimbo Thusong Service Centre administrator Raymond Munyai test one of the two solar-powered photocopiers which form part of the Digital Doorway Unit.

Mashudu Nematoka is the king of weddingsHe grew up looking after cattle and goats in the deeply rural mountainous village of Mudzid-zidzi, north of Thohoyandou. Today, he is a celebrated composer and singer of Venda tra-ditional wedding songs.

Affectionately known as “the king of weddings” by his adoring fans, Mashudu Nematoka is famous for his acrobatic dancing styles on stage and the ability to hook his audience whenever he performs.

Since he launched his professional music career in 2005, Nematoka has had five successful albums under his belt. His songs, O wana Mufunwa wawe and A hu na damu li si na ngwena, are making waves in music circles and are receiving massive airplay at several radio stations, especially in Limpopo.

“I started singing at a very early age. My primary school teachers realized that I have a musical talent and they encouraged me to take music seriously. I used to sing in church with my mother, Mavis, until my father, Johannes, bought me my first guitar and keyboard. I then went to the studio in 2005 to record my first album, Mudzimu u na rine, which was received with enthusiasm by my fans. My second album, Hosana, was released in 2007 and it was followed by Ri vhadali shangoni, which was released in 2008. I went back to the studio in 2012 to release another famous album, Duvha la u somola. My latest album is called Damu li si na ngwena”, he said.

Earlier this year, Nematoka released an enter-taining DVD which covers four of his previous albums. “The DVD is a special gift to my fans and I’m happy that it still in great demand. I will

continue to give my fans the best music because they are the ones who made me what I am today.”

Nematoka’s latest album, Damu li si na ngwena, contains ten hot tracks which also include Sathane u kwasha mbingano, Vhakalaha ndi dzi library, Jesu ndi khosi, Litshani u vetana, Lufuno lwa vhukuma, Vhaswa thonifhani, Tsheyani khekhe and Ndi ni tamela mashudu. The album was launched last week before a capacity crowd at Thohoyandou Primary School in Pretoria.

What does the future hold for this prolific mu-sician? “Despite a lack of resources and finances, my plan is to establish a non-profit organization which will help budding artists to venture into professional music careers.”

For CD sales, public performances and bookings, Nematoka can be contacted on 078 328 5135.

On Saturday afternoon, this vehicle burnt out at Ha-Ramavhoya in Nzhelele. It was established that a wire fault could have caused the fire; probably radio wires. The incident caused a huge traffic congestion on the Matidza main road as motorists and passersby stopped to get a glimpse of what was happening.

“Awareness will prevent more infections”

Chief urges Univen to empower residents

The Makhado municipality’s technical HIV/Aids committee believes that awareness will pave a road that will prevent future infections.

Speaking at recent meeting, Mr Rudzani Phalanndwa, from the office of the mayor, said the mu-nicipality was taking measures to

continue educating its communi-ties about the prevention of the disease. “The municipality has initiated a plan that will include HIV/Aids and tuberculosis cam-paigns at the municipal participa-tion programmes throughout this financial year,” he added.

According to him, with the

help of the Department of Health, a higher level of awareness will be created in the municipal com-munities. “The campaigns will also target the vulnerable com-munities, while Mayor David Mutavhatsindi will be available to lead some of the campaigns,” he added.

Well-known traditional leader and administrator Vho-Tho-vhele Nthumeni Masia, who has many villages and subjects under his authority, has urged the University of Venda to assist in targeted enrichment tuition programmes for high

He said that, by so do-ing, rural schools would be able to produce pro-fessionals like doctors, engineers and archi-tects who are critically needed to transform the economy of the nation and communities and also create much-need-ed employment.

He discussed his views during a recent courtesy visit by a del-egation from Univen, led by Prof Peter Mbati, the principal. The visit

formed part of the university’s outreach programme, where they go out and visit targeted stake-holdersfrom time to time.

The Univen delegation was also updated on important de-velopmental projects within the Ha-Masia community, such as

the four-star guest lodge and a community centre that is cur-rently under construction. Masia expressed his deepest apprecia-tion, on behalf of the Ha-Masia community, for the great work that Univen was doing in collab-oration with the communities.

Univen principal Professor Peter Mbati is being shown around the Matsila Guest Lodge by Thovhele Nthumeni Masia during his visit to the area.

On 6 September, staff of the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital embarked on a Casual Day health walk which was aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle among its employees and raising awareness about the plight of wheelchair users. The day started with a fun walk from the hospital and proceeded to a local gymnasium. In the photo, staff members exercise on the gym equipment.

Coal project “threatens water sources”Border residents form a crime forum

Gogo (80) still waits for house

Coal mining projects in the greater Soutpansberg area are seen to pose a major threat to water resources. The Makha-do project alone will use near-ly 30 mega litres of water per week, equalling the full capac-ity of reservoirs for the whole of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Tshikota.

The Makhado coal mining project of Coal of Africa Lim-ited (CoAL), situated north of Makhado (Louis Trichardt), will use 4.2 million litres of water per day, once in operation. CoAL has not yet disclosed where they will get the water from in a region known for its water scarcity.

Using a little arithmetic, 4.2 million litres of water or 4.2 megalitres per day, will amount to 29.4 megalitres per week. That is comparable to the total amount of water (approximately 31 megalitres) that the larger reservoirs in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and Tshikota together can hold. In a year, the Makha-do Coal project will use 1533 megalitres. CoAL has stated that the Makhado project will have a life span of 16 years, which means the mine will use 24 528 megalitres of water.

“CoAL has not yet told any-one where they will get the water from for this one mine, the Makhado mine, so how can CoAL even contemplate mas-sive large-scale mining projects in this area?” asks SOLVe, the Save Our Beautiful Limpopo Valley group.

“It is patently clear that CoAL has been unable to identify adequate water resources … The water studies carried out in respect of the Makhado Project have been characterized by strong criticism emanating from

A crime consultative committee has been set up in Beit Bridge to deal with criminals vandal-isng and stealing copper cables along the Beit Bridge-Mas-vingo highway and smuggling them to South Africa.

Villagers, commercial farmers and the business community recently formed the committee that has since partnered with the police and Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) offi -cials to contain the rampant theft of power and telephone cables around the area.

The chairperson of the com-mittee, Mr Joseph Ndou, said they were concerned about acts of vandalism, theft and smug-gling of stolen copper cables, adding that it affected the power supply and telecommunication in the area.

“We are working with the

police and ZESA offi cials, and as a committee we have mobilised resources to engage in joint oper-ations with the police and ZESA offi cials on a 24-hour basis. As the combined residents, business community and farmers living along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo highway, we are really worried at the rate which thieves are vandal-izing telecommunication lines and electricity wires to extract copper, which they smuggle to South Africa,” he said.

ZESA, which owns the equip-ment, is losing about R400 mil-lion in stolen copper cables annually.

Ndou said the move had started paying dividends as they appre-hended four suspects believed to be linked to a syndicate and they recovered copper cables worth R150 000. He added that the theft of power cables was also

affecting farmers along the Bubi and Limpopo River who relied on electricity to pump drinking water for their livestock.

He mentioned that businesses operating tourist resorts along the highway were also affected by the theft of cables and were incurring losses as they were now forced to resort to using power generators for lighting, following disruptions of the power supply due to the theft of electricity wires.

There are four safari lodges and a motel along the affected area, with each accommodating between 50 and 80 visitors per day.

He added that they were now appealing to the courts to impose stiffer penalties on criminals van-dalizing the ZESA equipment, as it affects communication in the area.

An 80-year-old granny still lives in a shabby mud house, 13 years after fl oods destroyed her home and she was promised a new RDP house. The new house was built, but never fi nished and she is still waiting for a roof to be put on, so that she can move in.

Tshaisa Shandukani stays in Mu-tonga village. Her two-room mud hut collapsed during the fl oods of 2000. She said that she registered for a house along with the other fl ood victims. Not long after that, a brick-layer and sub-contractor arrived to survey her site.

They ordered her to clean a place in her yard where the house could be built.

“I waited for seven full years to get the house, but to my disappointment, it was not completed”.

The contractors built the structure, but never installed the windows or the roof. They simply vanished without a trace.

“I live in a two-room mud house with my seven grandchildren and I’m a pensioner. I cannot afford to build a house with the money I am receiv-ing from the government, because I have to support my family,” said Shandukani.

She says that the Makhado mu-

nicipality promised that they would come and complete the house, but her house is still roofl ess. “There are about 200 RDP houses without roof-ing around the Elim area. During the rainy season we live in fear, because our houses can collapse at any time,” said Shandukani.

“All the families have been taken from pillar to post when enquiring about their houses at the Makhado municipality. Now some families are unable to build their own houses, due to the foundations laid in their yards,” she said.

The spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Housing Dieketseng Diale said it was very embarrassing, but these houses now fell under the rectifi cation programme by the National Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional affairs.

She said the National Home Build-ers Registration Council (NHBRC) was going to do an assessment of the structures and write a report.

“If it needs to be rehabilitated, they will also indicate this by writing a report and include the fi gures as to how much the houses will cost. We don’t have direct control over it as it is within the competency of the national department,” said Diale.

the University of the Free State, who conducted the peer review,” said the newly formed Vhembe Mineral Resources Stakeholders Forum through its attorney, Mr Christo Rheeders.

In the meantime, the defi-nite feasibility study (DFS) for Makhado was released in June this year, described by CoAL’s new CEO, Mr David Brown, as a major achievement, “confi rming the company’s potential to be a major hard coking coal produc-er, supported by the positive economics of the project.”

The DFS indicates that the Makhado project has 344.8 million mineable tonnes in situ, with mining expected to take place at an average rate of 12.6 million tonnes a year, producing 2.3 million tonnes a year of hard coking coal and 3.2 million tonnes a year of thermal coal. Mining will take place on an opencast basis, with the poten-tial to expand underground. The project is to cost R3.96 billion (including contingency) to build. The project’s internal rate of return (IRR) of 30.1% and net present value (NPV) of R6.79 billion were calculated using independently forecast average hard coking coal prices over the life of the mine.

“The Makhado Project is included in the annual report as an exploration project and the

company is in the process of fulfi lling the Black Economic Empowerment requirements, in conjunction with fundraising ac-tivities for the project prior to the granting of a new order mining right (NOMR),” Brown said in his annual fi nancial statements announcement on 30 August.

“The above paragraph in their annual report and fi nan-cial statement implies that their opencast operation could be breaking the law as it seems as if they have not yet obtained new order rights, which means they cannot have a water license,” said an expert of Bench Marks Foundation, an organisation which measures principles for global corporate responsibility, Mr David van Wyk.

According to Mr Hendrik du Toit, who interprets the National Water Act, the current Water Resource Strategy does not set aside any water for mining use. “For the time being, they cannot start mining at the Makhado Project. If a water use license (WUL) is issued, the persons who did object to the WUL may appeal at the Water Tribunal and insist that the decision be sus-pended until fi nal disposing of the matter by the Tribunal. The Minister may, however, direct otherwise but this time around it could be taken to the High Court,” said Du Toit.

Granny Tshaisa Shandukani has been waiting for an RDP house to be fi nished since 2007.

Education experts should look at what these youngsters did

We always enjoy any feedback from our readers. Please take note that prefer-ence is given to short, factual letters as we don’t always have space for lengthy debates. The Editor reserves the right to refuse letters should they be, for ex-ample, libelous and also will shorten letters when necessary. Letters without the writer’s name will not be considered. Those who would like to stay anonymous, must indicate it on their letters, but must still provide us with their details.

The demonstrations by the people of Malamulele may be viewed

as tribalism or going back to the days of apartheid where people were separated, based on their ethnic or tribal groups. The fact is that we are living in a modern and democratic society where people can read, see and question what is right or wrong.

It is important for one to be hon-est with him/herself regarding this issue and ask the question: Does the Thulamela municipality have the capacity to provide services to all its people? The answer is no: the Thulamela municipality is failing to service its own head office in the Thohoyandou CBD, so how can they manage the Malamulele area?

The Thulamela Municipality on its own has failed. Just look at the Thohoyandou CBD, Sibasa and the surrounding area - it is a mess. I would be happy if Malamulele can be declared a municipality on

its own and the reason for that is not because they belong to a certain group, but because the area is too big for Thulamela. If you look at both Malamulele and Thohoyandou, there is no service delivery in this area; the only delivery is self-en-richment, that is all.

In my own area, which is almost 35 km from the head office of Thulamela, our water tap has not had water for the past three years. I ask myself: what is the municipality doing for us? What is the purpose of their IDP? Where does all the money go after each financial year? Our municipality is a failure.

To the group of people at Mal-amulele - your rights in terms of the constitution are protected to have your own municipality and are violated by those who are busy empowering themselves.

Thanks to those who never forgot

Will you please convey our heart-felt thanks to the many readers

of your paper who played a part in the life of my husband and our father during the many years that he served in dozens of villages among the Venda-, Tsonga- and Sotho-speaking people in this region. (Well-known missionary, Dr Markus Petrus Kruger passed away on 28 August).

Although he retired in 2001, after which he served in the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre on a voluntary and all-but-full-time basis, you never forgot him and over the years we received many visits from you people whom he loved.

We especially want to thank those brothers and sisters who visited him in his sickness.

Some of you made the sacrifice to come from Pretoria and Potchef-

stroom with the sole purpose to see him in his last days or to attend his funeral.

It was a privilege that some of his spiritual children could have a part in his funeral service.

The dziyimbo sung by a group of his spiritual children during that service touched many hearts in a special way as his was touched on his second last day on earth when one of you, a young woman, sang four dzinyimbo to him. Afterwards he told us, “Now I have said fare-well to Venda.”

We thank and honour the Lord who called him and allowed him to serve you for the greatest part of his life.

- Juliana Kruger and children, Makhado (Louis Trichardt)

A reader commented on last week’s sto-ry about the R50 000 donation for rhino horn sniffer dog, Rico:

The revised national curriculum state-ment envisages the integration of

environmental issues into various school learning areas. However, there have been several challenges impeding the imple-mentation of this policy, due to various reasons related to human capacity and resources. The majority of schools are understaffed in as far as environmental education is concerned and most rural schools lack the finances to take students to the few existing environmental edu-cational centres in the province. Such complexities suggest that we revisit the way we are doing things when offering environmental education in rural areas.

Well, forgive my bias, but it goes without saying that there is a still a lot to be desired when it comes to inspiring students (and teachers, in some cases) to embrace the environmental education lesson learnt in the classroom (if there is

any), and implement it into the current socio-environmental issues that our province is facing e.g pollution, land degradation, poaching, climate, and in-vasion. If the majority of teachers in the rural schools are given the capacity to inspire students to take the environment education lessons beyond the class-room, then we would be certain that we will have future leaders with excellent sustainable development background, because they will be well informed about environmental issues.

I know that pundits in the education sector will respond to this by throwing tantrums at me about the disparities between the so-called model C and rural public schools. I agree, but let me say that you don’t need me to remind you that our province produced the country’s top three maths and science achievers in 2012, with one of them scooping the country’s overall best student award.

Furthermore, it must be said with-out shame that one of these three kids was not from a very privileged school

(Manaledzi High School at Tsh-iozwi village). What happened here, was it a matter of pure talent on the part of the student, or inspiration drawn from the educators? Both of these spec-ulations could be correct. My

point here is that rural students can also potentially attain meritorious status in environmental education and awareness if they are afforded the exposure they deserve in environmental issues.

My appeal to environmental edu-cators, principals, school governing bodies, circuit managers, curriculum specialists and the provincial education department is to look at the inspiring example provided by Casper and Marco of taking environmental education beyond the classroom’s comfort. Using Casper and Marco as ambassadors of environmental education in the Limpopo Province could potentially encourage learners from rural schools to convert their theoretical environmental educa-tion knowledge into practice.

Despite the obvious differences in the geographic locations, I believe that if the majority of learners get exposed to what Casper and Marco have achieved, and the prospects they are likely to encoun-ter in the near future, most learners in our province will be inspired to partic-ipate actively in environmental issues affecting their communities.

“Councillors must tell communities to use Vhembe’s water resources sparingly”

Moffet Ndlovu and Jennifer Tshilambana were crowned Mr and Miss Makhado Comprehensive Secondary School during an event at the school on 6 September.

Councillors from various mu-nicipalities within the Vhembe District were urged to inform their communities to conserve and use water sparingly.

Since he departed from Pre-toria on 19 August, Fouché has walked about 520 km. Made of fibreglass, his rhino has 618 red stickers on its body, which represents the number of rhinos killed in South Africa from 1 January to 9 September 2013. Tshukudu Lenaka campaign is operating under the flag of the Limpopo Angels, a Section 21 company.

Addressing curious nature fanatics on the N1 while en-tering Musina, Fouché said the aim of the campaign was to

tell, show and involve people locally and nationally in an-ti-poaching activities and the conservation of rhinos. “Few people realize the challenges facing anti-poaching units, and the kilometres to patrol with no idea of where the poachers plan to hit next. Bearing this in mind, intelligence-driven operations are the cornerstone to cracking syndicates, which is why we have identified two beneficiaries who are focused on intelligence/informant net-works and special equipment to execute their tasks.”

During his long haul, Fouché has visited local schools and shopping centres en route to Musina.“My aim is to tell, show, involve people and continue to raise funds to protect the rhinos. Rhinos are endangered species and it is our joint responsibility

to make sure that they get the protection they deserve.”

He said beneficiaries of his initiative included The An-ti-Poaching Intelligence Group Southern Africa and the South African Police Services (SAPS) Anti-Poaching Unit. “We will continue to raise funds in order to support them with tangible equipment and items to com-bat poaching of rhinos and to educate communities and the general public.”

An adventurer, Fouché said it was not the first time he engaged himself in raising community awareness. “In 2009, I walked a total distance of 2 000km from Cape Town to the Beit Bridge Border Post to raise awareness on a healthy lifestyle. I will continue to take part in commu-nity-building initiatives until my last day on earth.”

Cllr Bigboy Ndou welcomed Anton Fouché shortly after he arrived with his rhino from Pretoria.

Freddy Rikhotso (40) was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment when he recently appeared in the Hlanganani Regional Court in Waterval in connection with the death of his 40-year-old spouse, Ms Lizzy Hlunwane.

He testified through his lawyer and stated that he found Hlunwane with another man on the local ground. They eventually had a fight, which resulted in Rikhotso's leaving her on the spot. He further said that he was surprised the next morning to hear that his wife was dead because he had left her still alive.

The court sentenced him to 10 years in jail, with five years conditionally suspended.

Hlunwane's death shook the whole village of Mahonisi and the incident instantly made newspa-per headlines when her naked, lifeless body was discovered at the back of the neighbour's house in the early hours of Good Friday.

Lawrence Mabasa.

Lawrence Mabasa is one of the local gospel sing-ers whose music is growing with time. His fifth album, Nthange phanda Murena, was released two weeks ago and is different from the previous four in terms of the quality of music.

The new release was recorded at the BIL Studio in Thohoyandou two months ago.

Although it is self-marketed, Nthange phanda Murena is selling well and the likelihood is that Mabasa will soon not be able to meet the ever-growing demand. The new album contains 10 songs. Tracks like Kholwo lwami, Ndi a pfa Murena, Calvary and the title song, Nthange phanda Murena, are likely to make the album an instant hit with fans.

In an interview with him on Monday, Mabasa mentioned that his new album is a Christmas gift for his loyal fans. He revealed that he started sing-ing gospel music in his teen ages. It was in 2003 when he felt that he was mature enough to go to the recording studio. His debut album, Lead me to Calvary, was released the very same year.

Although it was his debut album, Lead me to Calvary took Mabasa’s name to the pinnacle of the local music industry. It was probably the songs like U ya ntha, Yesu muhluri and the title track, Lead me to Calvary, that made it possible for the album to sell more than 10 000 copies within a short space of time. His second album, Think of me, was recorded and released in 2005.

His third and fourth albums, Saphele isizwe and When peace is like a river, were released in 2007 and 2010 respectively.

The high-flying Benny’s Care Soc-cer Academy aims to bring the Sas-fa Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup back to Vhembe when they participate in the national finals at the King Zwelithini Stadium next week.

After ending third in the Milo U/13 championships a fortnight ago, the players of the U/19 team promised that they would do their utmost to come back with the silverware. Eigh-teen schools from the nine provinces will participate in the competition, with each province being represented

by two schools.Benny's won the provincial tourna-

ment and received R100 000 earlier this year. Next week’s winners of the national championship will receive R1 million, while the runners-up will get R750 000.

The coach of Benny's Care, Mr Justice Matloga, said they were going all out and they wouldn’t let Limpopo down."We have selected a very strong team,” Matloga said. According to him, it is important to reward the loyal community of Limpopo who support-

ed the team for several years. Matloga said that he would rely on Ren-dani Mudau, Marubini Manyane, Lesedi Pap-inga, Andani Nelamlili and Andrew Kabota to clinch the competition for them.

A pupil of Soutpansberg Primary School, Philip Apea-Adu, was recently selected for the Limpopo U/13 team to participate in the inter-provincial cricket tournament in Bloemfontein later this year.

Last weekend saw the newly pro-moted Baroka FC collect the max-imum National First Division League points.

Although it was an away fixture for them, Baroka proved all the critics wrong by coming back home with tyhree points from their match against the rookies, Maluti FET College. Baroka beat the students 1-0 at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Phuthad-itjhaba on Saturday.

After losing their opening league match at home, Thanda Royal Zulu continued to give away points. This time around, they disappointed their home fans by losing 0-1 to Santos at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay.

Black Leopards suffered a 1-2 de-

feat at the hands of African Warriors at the Seshego Stadium last Friday. Black Leopards soon realised that it was not their day when they conceded an own goal in the opening minutes of the game. Jomo Cosmos were crushed 0-2 by Milano United at the Grassy Park Stadium in Cape Town and Chippa United maintained their unbeaten record by beating FC Cape Town 2-0. United FC beat Roses United 2-1 at the Kaizer Sebotlelo Stadium in Botshabelo.

Sivutsa Stars are still celebrating their 2-0 victory over Witbank Spurs. The match was played at the Kabok-weni Stadium in Nelspruit. Vasco da Gama were too good for Blackburn Rovers when they beat them 2-1 at the Parow Park Stadium.

A club official stresses a point during the meeting.

Teams that will have not paid their full affiliation fee by the end of today (Friday) will not be allowed to play their open-ing league matches when the league activities for the SAB League kick off this weekend.

The new kick-off date for the activities for the new season was confirmed during a meeting with the clubs at the Avkhom Hotel in Thohoyandou last Saturday.

During the meeting, the pres-ident of the Safa Vhembe Re-gional League, Mr Geore Kubayi, told the packed hall that his office was receiving numerous requests from clubs on a day-to-day basis, pleading with the league to con-sider allowing the so-called poor clubs to pay their affiliation fees in installments. The idea was re-jected by the clubs, who indicated that no team should be allowed to kick the ball before paying their affiliation fees in full.

During the meeting, it was confirmed that the two teams at the bottom of the log will be relegated to the lower division, while the champions for the nine streams will meet in the

regional promotional playoffs to determine the team that will represent the region in the pro-vincial playoffs.

It was also officially an-nounced during the meeting that Joe’s Express FC, who represent-ed the region in the provincial playoffs at the Jane Furse Sta-dium in Sekhukhune two weeks ago, had done the region proud by gaining promotion to the Safa Second division.

The meeting also agreed that there was no need to increase the amount payable to the match offi-cials for offici-ating at match-es, saying it should remain R200 per team. Unlike in the previous sea-sons, where the home teams were obligat-ed to pay the match officials an amount of R400 in the event the op-ponents failed

to show-up, the meeting agreed that the home side should now pay only R200, while the league will settle the balance.

During the meeting, the club officials appealed to the league to launch an intensive investi-gation into allegations of match fixing by match officials. It was also announced that the regional overall champions will receive a cash prize of R35 000 at the end of the current season.

Last season’s overall champi-ons, Joe’s Express, took home a cash prize of R20 000.

SAB clubs to pay outstanding fees

Mr Mzwakhe Nyathi.

As part of their many ways to ensure that they don’t miss promotion by a whisker for the second time in a row, one of the SAB League affiliates, Mawe-ja Takers FC, have recently strengthened their technical department by acquiring the services of a new coach.

According to the general man-ager of the team, Mr Mukondi Nemavhulani, the new mentor, Mr Mzwakhe Nyathi, joined the Tshakhuma side three weeks ago.

Nemavhulani indicated that the decision to appoint Nyathi was reached after it was realised that he has the potential to take the team to new heights. He revealed that the management was impressed by the team’s performance last season un-der the guidance of Mr Lucky “Mchichwa” Nelukau.

“We rewarded Nelukau by promoting him to the post of the club’s technical director,” he said.

Maweja finished their league programme on top of Stream D last season with an unbeaten re-

cord in all league matches. They took part in the SAB League regional play-offs, where they failed to make the grade to the provincial playoffs.

Nyathi brings with him a wealth of local football experi-ence. Some of the teams he guid-ed during his 17 years as a coach include Tho-h o y a n d o u H o t s p u r s , Mani in i Al l Blacks, Makh-i tha Yel low Birds and Ba-sel FC. Asked about his long- and short-term goals with the club, Nyathi said that his mandate was to ensure that the team gained promotion to the Safa Sec-ond division at the end of this season.

Nyathi re-

vealed that he has a well-bal-anced team, despite the fact that some of the last season’s regular players did not come back this season. Maweja Takers will open the new season by hosting Tswinga New Generations FC at the Tshakhuma Mulangaphuma grounds tomorrow afternoon.

Leopards and Baroka in Lim NFD derbyThe Old Peter Mokaba Stadi-um in Polokwane is expected to be packed to capacity tomor-row afternoon. That is where the much-awaited NFD League match between the only two Limpopo sides, Baroka FC and Black Leopards, will be staged.

Leopards must win the match at all cost in order to restore their lost pride after losing a home match against African Warriors at the Seshego Stadium last Fri-day afternoon.

It will not be easy for Lidoda Duvha to collect points against the newcomers, as the Sekhu-khune side are sharpened to kill after winning their match against the Maluti FET College last weekend. Leopards and Baroka

have unfinished business. The last time they played against each other was when the Thohoyan-dou side booted Baroka out of the Nedbank Cup at the Peter Mokaba Stadium two years ago.

In the other NFD matches, Roses United will play in front of their home crowd. They will host Milano United FC at the Kaizer Sebotlelo Stadium in the Free State. It remains to be seen whether Thanda Royal Zulu will manage to rise to the occasion and register their first victory when they meet Blackburn Rov-ers at the Umthatha Stadium in the Eastern Cape. Thanda Royal Zulu lost both opening league matches.

Jomo Cosmos are geared to

give FC Cape Town a run for their money when they lock horns at the Makhulong Stadium in Johannesburg.

Sivutsa Stars will undertake a journey to Cape Town and will meet Santos at the Athlone Stadium.

The Cape Town derby between Chippa United and Vasco da Gama will be played at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. Chippa are leading the pack, after winning both matches they had played to date. Witbank Spurs will host Maluti FET College at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank and African Warriors will entertain United FC in their Free State derby at the Charles Mopedi Stadium.

The head coach, Mr Morgan Khoza (left), receives the kit and soccer boots from Mr Abram Luruli (right), while some of the players look on.

The former municipal man-ager of the Musina Local Mu-nicipality, Mr Abram Luruli, made an unexpected appear-ance at Maungani village last Saturday with good news for a local soccer team.

After parting ways with the municipality unceremoniously about a year ago, Luruli went to Johannesburg, where he joined the consulting company ISO-Q as manager. The purpose of his visit to Maungani village last Saturday was to present two sets of soccer kit, training kit and 28 pairs of soccer boots to a local soccer team, Maungani Cool Masters U/17 FC.

The ceremony was held at the local chief’s kraal. Luruli indicated that it all started some

months back when the represen-tatives from Cool Masters paid the chief a visit. It was during that visit that the delegation pleaded with their traditional leader, Khosi Vho Ndulamiso Magoda, to provide them with sports facilities.

The chief took the matter upon himself and moved from one company to the other, searching for donations until he met a Good Samaritan at ISO-Q. During the ceremony, Luruli revealed that his compa-ny will continue to plough back into the communities in the form of donations and sponsorships.

During the ceremony, one of the local traditional lead-ers, Musanda Vho-Nthumeni Nemukula, indicated that the

lack of sports facilities in the area was fast becoming a matter of grave concern, saying they were losing more children to shebeens.

A happy parent, Mrs Char-ity Ramuntshi, said that the community was proud to have Khosi Vho-Ndulamiso Magoda as their traditional leader, saying most of the leaders did not have the interests of their subjects at heart. The team’s head coach, Mr Morgan Khoza, said that the donation would make things easier for them to produce play-ers to the higher divisions. He revealed that they had produced players like Phindulo Tshihume and Rabelani Mutsila to the higher division during the past years.

says that the release of his third album, Maanda a Mudzimu (Vuvuzela), in 2010 had made him many enemies. “They persecuted me and bombarded me with phone calls, threating to kill me because I was selling more music than them,” says Shinabya.

He explains that he had to run away from Tsianda and Shayandima in Thohoyandou and live like a va-grant in different villages in the district. “The stress was too much for me,” he says in a pained voice.

“Imagine people who taught you ways of baking bread, now saying that they want to cut off your hands. They even destroyed my family – I had a beautiful woman, but when I returned from promot-ing my music, I found that one musician, who hap-pened to be a family friend, had impregnated her.”

He maintains that, after that encounter, he found no reason to continue to live. “The pain was too much, but I found strength in God,” he recalls.

Shinabya has found a haven at Vicky Muvhali’s home at Shirley village, where he spends most of his time training seven local youths to play musical instruments for his next project.

Shinabya’s entry into the limelight came when he walked into the Thohoyandou Stadium in 2010 and requested to entertain the soccer fans who were waiting to watch the 2010 World Cup matches on big screens. When he stummed the guitar, the crowd went wild and wanted to know where this new man had been all along. “I recorded a live DVD that day,” said Shinabya.

The very DVD sold about 15 000 units via self-marketing within three months of its release. “It’s ironical that now I can’t even afford to buy a loaf of bread,” he worries. “I put my faith in God. My troubles will come to an end soon.”

He is also optimistic about his new project. “My band is made up of talented men, so watch out for my new project, entitled Mudzimu kha vha ri tsireledze (Oh God – protect us!) to be recorded live on Saturday (21 September) in Johannesburg. My fans can only expect the best.”

Apart from singing and playing guitar, the 29-year-old Shinabya is an engineer of note. As an engineer, he has worked with Zozo (Joseph Mbiza), Amon Mvula, Victor Ndlovu, to mention just a few. “I started as a dancer for Zozo,” says the artist, who raised money for his first guitar by ploughing fields for a fee around Maniini village, using a hand hoe.

Hope of receiving electricity is fading

Woman trampled to death by elephant

Ex-prisoner creates jobs for others

For the residents of Zamenkomste in the Kuta-ma area, the hope of receiving electricity from the Makhado municipality is fading away.

Residents are fed-up with the lack of services at the new stands and they say they have been living in houses with no electricity since 2009. “We are living in terrible conditions. We want the munic-ipality to make good on their promises to provide services to our people,” says Mr Nthambeleni Musandiwa, one of the residents. The people regard themselves as forgotten and feel that, even if they go out and vote in the coming election, it does not

A concerned resident, Ms Eugenia Musandiwa.

mean that anything will change for them. So far, the promises made to them have not been honoured.

“We are tired of us-ing candles and primus stoves instead of elec-tricity and we do not want to chop down trees anymore,” Musandiwae said. He accused the municipality of wasting taxpayers’ money. He mentioned that he was so surprised when one of the municipal work-ers in the department of electricity, who had

relocated to about 50 meters away from his stand, received electricity in February in 2012.

The secretary of the Zamenkomste traditional council, Mr Samson Luruli, confirmed that all the people of Zamenkomste are shocked about this de-lay to complete the job. “We, the ordinary people, want to know why there is a delay in electrifying our village, whereas others have electric lights.”

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, said the municipality would supply electricity to the area during the 2012/13 financial year .

An 80-year-old woman from Tokwane village outside Beit Bridge was trampled to death by an elephant while working in her fields.

The elephant reportedly de-stroyed several homesteads and fields before pouncing on the elderly woman. A local villager, Mr Tinashe Mphala, told Lim-popo Mirror that the elephant is believed to be part of a herd that reportedly strayed from neigh-bouring Botswana.

“The ongoing elephant prob-lem faced by villagers in sur-rounding areas of Tokwana should be treated as a matter of urgency, because our children

are now absconding from school, following this development. In recent months, two people have been killed by elephants,” said Mphala.

Police spokesperson A/Insp Christopher Ngwenya said they had received a report of a wom-an who had been killed by an elephant. The victim was lat-er identified as Ms Siphetheni Ngwenya. “The victim left her homestead at about 06:00 for her field, where the elephant attacked and killed her,” said Ngwenya. He added that the elephant first charged at another villager, Mr Trynos Mdlongwa, before it killed Ngwenya.

“Mdlongwa managed to es-cape uninjured. A few minutes later, he heard a scream by a woman calling for help. Md-longwa alerted other villagers, who teamed up and went to investigate.”

Upon arrival, they found the lifeless body of the victim lying on the ground and the elephant gone. “A report was made to the police, who attended the scene and ferried the body to the hospital.

“The elephant was tracked and killed by a professional hunter, Mr Daily Scout, who was provid-ed by the rural district council,” said Ngwenya.

Third reggae album for Kenny Wailer

Musina band participates at Wanderers

Like wine that matures with time, the music of Kenny Murabi is easily penetrating the South African reggae fraternity with a mighty sound. Known as Kenny Wailer by his fans, Murabi has just released his third album Tshi-khokhonono (a Venda name for insect) which is being received with enthusiasm by reggae music lovers.

A teacher by profession, Murabi is gaining great popularity among reggae music lovers because of his unique style, which consists of heavy bass sounds, some chopping sounds and occasional well-positioned brass.

“If I die now, I will die a happy man because I have accomplished my mission of releasing a more mature album which took me more than seven years to compile,” he said jokingly during an interview. Murabi, who hails from Mianzwi Tshidane, north of Thohoyandou, says it has been a long and winding road for him to be where he is today. “I fell in love with music at a very young age. I used to emulate my late brother, Joas, who used to sing for the Venda Northern Trumpets in the eighties. His famous composition Saulo Saulo U Ntovholelani gained great popularity and it was an instant hit with the then Radio Venda. I then made my own guitar, using an old oil tin, wood and fish line. And the rest is now history…”

The dreadlocked singer released his first album, Holly War, in 1999. He said about his first album: “It performed very well and I wanted music lovers to enjoy it fully before going back to the studio. Holly War was then followed by Tsha ri vhone, which was released in 2005. I was under pressure from my fans to release another album, hence

the release of my third album Tshikhokhonono.”Besides the title track (Tshikhokhonono) itself,

the album boasts sweet reggae music songs like I’m not alone, Sing Development, Muzika, A hu na, Ma BBF, Faranani, Ni a mu funa naa and Ni so ngo tsha mmbudza. All these songs were recorded in Murabi’s own recording studio, MURAK, which is situated at his home. The album is receiving massive airplay both on na-tional and regional radio stations. He says since the release of his album a month ago, his diary is full of bookings for performances as his fans want to see his unique musical talent live on stage. “I perform all my shows live and that is why people never get tired of watching me on stage. I do a lot of rehearsals to make sure that my fans get the same quality of music that they get from my CDs.” For CDs, public performances and book-ings, Murabi can be contacted on 082 401 9730.

One of the participants, the Alexander Field Band.

The thrilling sound of 1 700 young musicians will fill Jo-hannesburg’s Wanderers Stadium on Saturday, 28 Sep-tember, during the 2013 Field Band National Champion-ships. Several bands from Limpopo will compete during the event.

The Field Band Foundation’s National Championship slogan is Music for Life, which is fit-ting, since this multi-award-win-ning initiative has been creating opportunities for young people from disadvantaged commu-nities to develop life-changing skills through the medium of music and dance for the past 16 years.

The nine bands competing in the premier division of the championships hail from around the country, with four from

Gauteng, two from Limpopo, one from the Northern Cape, one from the Eastern Cape and one from the Western Cape. They are: De Beers Musina Field Band (Musina, Limpopo), De Beers Blouberg Field Band (Blouberg, Limpopo), Black Like Me Soweto Field Band (Soweto, Johannesburg), De Beers PPC Cullinan Field Band (Cullinan, Pretoria), De Beers PPC Kimberley Field Band (Kimberley), Black Like Me Mdantsane Field Band (East London), PFG Lonolusha Field Band (Springs, Gauteng), Al-exandra Field Band (Alexan-dra, Johannesburg) and the Cape Whaler Field Band (Cape Town).

In the first division, for bands that have been in existence for five years or less, there are four

competitors: Anglo American Thabazimbi Field Band (Thaba-zimbi, Limpopo), PPC Makana Grahamstown Field Band (Gra-hamstown, Eastern Cape), An-glo American Tsantsabane Field Band (Postmasburg, Northern Cape) and Bafokeng Field Band (Bafokeng, North West).

The Field Band Foundation is a Section 21 company that was established in 1997 to develop an indigenous variant of the global marching band concept in disadvantaged areas of South Africa.

The initiative has won several accolades for its work over the years.

The foundation currently ben-efits almost 5 000 young people, who are members of field bands in a cross-section of cities, towns and townships nationwide.

He was convicted and sen-tenced to 17 years’ impris-onment in 2003 for commit-ting armed robberies around Thohoyandou. After he was released on parole in February 2011, he decided to turn his life around.

Sipho Nthangeni (40) of Tho-hoyandou P East has created a job for himself and four other unemployed community mem-bers by washing cars at his car wash, Vukuzenzele. Vukuzen-zele means to do it yourself.

“Life was a nightmare after I was released from the Ku-tama-Sinthumule Maximum Security Prison in 2011 with no jobs around, until someone

advised me to stand up and do things on my own. I decided to start a car wash at my father’s house in November 2012 after I was given old car-wash machine and an old vacuum cleaner,” said Nthangeni.

“My business started to go from strength to strength and I decided to employ some com-munity members to help me wash cars. I am a boss who employs four people who can now put food on the table for their fami-lies,” he proudly added.

Last Monday, Vukuzenzele Car Wash received a boost when two car washing machines and a vacuum cleaner were donated to Nthangeni, with the assistance

of the Thohoyandou Nedbank branch, New Life after Prison Community Forum and Mulase Business Connection.

Pastor Ndikandafhi Makhu-vha, the chairperson of New life after Prison Community Forum said there were many people who were arrested and given heavy sentences, but if God had given them a second chance in life, they could make a meaningful contribution to the community after being released from prison.

“We are pleased with what Nthangeni is doing to change his life for the better, and even for other unemployed community members working with him in his car wash.”

Ex-prisoner Sipho Nthangeni (second from left) received car wash machines and other equipment from Ms Humbelani Netshandama (left), Mr Farisani Mulaudzi, Head of Community Corrections: Thohoyandou Management Area, Mr Mashudu Tshikororo Correctional Official and Pastor Ndikandafhi Makhuvha (right)

The manager of the newly formed team, Madodonga Mabilu FC, Mr Madambi "Mirror" Lisoga (left) welcomed the donation of the new soccer kit from Mphefhedzi Construction. The official handing over was held last Thursday at Makhado. In our photo, Lisoga receives the new kit from Mr Thupi Masiavhula.

Ntuwiseni Mulaudzi of Dynamos controls the ball.

It was sweet revenge for Tshiozwi Dynamos when they beat Madombidzha Western Stars 2-1 in the final of the Liwebeda tournament at the Madombidzha grounds on Sunday.

Dynamos lost 1-2 to Stars the previous weekend.Stars squandered numerous obvious chances in

the first half. The leading goal scorer, Thabo Matuba, could

not live up to his reputation as he was contained by Matodzi Maruli.

Lufuno Ndou and Thabo Mamburu of Stars should have scored more than twice each, but they could not beat the rock-solid defence.

No goals were scored in the first half. After the interval, Stars’ keeper, Hector Malange, made a fantastic one-on-one stop.

In the 56th minute, Nedzamba burst down the left flank and beat keeper Malange at the near post from a tight angle.

Moments later, Malange handled the ball outside the penalty area and Referee Tshifhiwa Sadiki awarded a free kick to Dynamos. Mirila Mabasa scored from the set piece.

Rio Ramabulana of Stars beat the defence and passed the ball to Thabo Matuba, who scored easily.

Late in the match, Thabo Mamburu of Stars was red-carded for a second bookable offence.

The marathon started in Zim-babwe and ended in Musina.

It was well-attended by both South Africans and Zimbabwe-ans.

Bad start for LeopardsBlack Leopards were beaten 2-1 by African Warriors at Seshego Stadium last Friday. They started their NFD campaign extreme-ly shakily, with only one league point after two matches.

Leopards only have themselves to blame. They abused countless scoring opportunities in the opening minutes. Their lethal striker, David Zulu, unleashed prematurely, instead of moving a few steps towards the keeper, Siayonga Mbatha.

The only player who was booked for rough tackling was Meshack Maphangule of Leopards. He tackled Thamsang Ngema from behind when the game was 12 minutes old.

Kamokgelo Mabuye of Warriors inter-cepted a back pass by a defender of the home team and blasted in a rocket. The keeper of the home team, Dino Visser, dived in the wrong direction.

Leopards made three replacements in the second half. They introduced Brian Ami-du, Thomas Madimba and Edgar Manaka respectively. Amidu went loose from the right-hand corner and unleashed a ground cutter to equalise.

After the goal, Leopards came back strong-ly. The players of Warriors had to abandon their positions and packed themselves at the far back.

The Vhembe boys should have scored in the 66th minute, but the keeper of Warriors denied them the goal when he saved Meshack ”Mabedi” Maphangule’s shot.

The winning goal for Warriors came after a rebound in the 75th minute, when Thami Ngema scored easily. Keeper Dino Visser of Leopards had to stretch to the limit to save Si-yabonga Vilani’s volley in the dying minutes.
