End of chaos at Vuwani?

15 April 2016 Year 26 R4,00 VAT Inc.

What was supposed to be a quiet fi nal voter registration weekend in Vuwani turned nasty when angry residents protesting against their inclusion into a new municipality that would include Malamulele went on the rampage.

All activities stopped in the Vuwani area on Thursday evening in preparation of a complete shutdown to prevent Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) staff from operating in the area. The shutdown was to end on Sunday, the last day of the voter registration weekend.

The angry residents who were against the presence of IEC staff in their area torched properties belonging to people they believed they were pro the Malamulele municipality. They also attacked passing motorists, damaging at least 13 vehicles in the process. Unlike in previous instances where roads were barricaded, this time around the area was calm and motorists were allowed to pass.

Even the IEC staff members managed to open most of the voting stations, but only

a handful of people turned up to register. Positive turnouts were reported at Davhana and Kurhuleni.

At Masakona, angry residents blocked the main road to the village when fi ve truckloads of building sand were offl oaded on the tarred road leading to the village. An alternative road leading to the village was also blocked when a trench was dug across it. Incidents of violence were also reported at Tshimbupfe, where a number of people were arrested.

Police in the area have been accused of terrorising villagers and arresting them at their homes, including those who were not part of the strike. The town of Vuwani was quiet throughout the shutdown.

Surprisingly, villages around Hanesen-gani that used to give full solidarity to the affected villages have pulled out of the protests against the inclusion of parts of Vuwani into the new municipal entity that will include Malamulele. The rift has been interpreted by many as a weakening in the cause of residents who have vowed to fi ght to the end against their inclusion in the new municipality.

Others have prophesied the end of a turbulent era in the history of Vuwani, saying the strike had lost momentum, but some leaders have made it clear that it was not over until their battle had been won.

Pro-Makhado spokesperson Mr Mutha-the said they achieved their objective of no registration in their villages as many heeded the call and did not register. “We are happy as a community that our people conducted themselves in a peaceful way to show their dissatisfaction with their being forced into a new municipality,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto said they had a big police contingent placed at strategic points and that their presence ensured that there were road blocks in the area. “Together with the IEC, we managed to open almost all the registra-tion stations in the area, and out of the 57 stations, only six were not operating. There were incidents of violence here and there at places like Masakona and Tshimbupfe.”

According to Otto, the police have ar-rested eight people for public violence and no one has been arrested in connection with an arson case at Masakona.

Exciting DTT campaign at Tanyani Village

Residents chase IEC officials away

Body found in burnt shack at Thembaluvhilo

South Africa’s campaign to roll out its Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) is expected to generate excitement this coming weekend in the village of Tiyani ka Magoro.

Local residents will get the opportunity to discuss digital migration and its benefits with Communications Minister Faith Muthambi at a planned DTT awareness campaign at the vil-lage’s sports grounds on Sunday, April 17.

The registration of house-holds that qualify to receive free subsidised government Set Top Boxes (STBs) will also take place

during the campaign. The quali-fying criteria for free STBs have been developed and, according to Min Muthambi, applicants must prove that they are South African citizens; that their household in-come is R3 200 and they should also have a valid TV licence.

Since Muthambi officially launched the registration of STBs in the Northern Cape last year, more than 12 000 households have registered with the South African Post Office to receive the STBs. The provinces that have already started with the registration process of STBs are Northern Cape, Limpopo, Free

State and Mpumalanga. While Muthambi will also

brief residents and their tradi-tional leaders about the successes of government service delivery, she is also expected to explain to residents why it is important for the country to move from analogue to digital television as well as touch on the economic benefits that are associated with the digital migration project. During the the past few months, Muthambi and her team have been visiting the deep rural areas across the country to educate people about digital migration. - SAnews.gov.za

Angry residents of the Mulima area chased away Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officials at Vuwani on Saturday during the final voters registration on the weekend. The officials were under heavy police guard.

It was reported that members of the community had also disrupted IEC operations ahead of the voter registration weekend.

The community members are upset by the Demarcation Board’s decision to amalgamate some off their area with Ward 5 of the Makhado

Municipality, which includes Mulima, Thondoni, Lambani, Vuka and Likhade. People from Muli-ma have been saying that they are unwilling to be part of Ward 5, which includes Magageni and surrounding villages.

The secretary of the Mulima Demarcation Forum, Mr Tendani Musehana, said community members would have proceeded with the voter registration peacefully if the government had consulted with them before, but the government instructed them to go to the new ward, which is

far away from them. “It is not only the Demar-cation Task team, but the whole community of Mulima, which includes traditional leaders, say-ing that we cannot be part of the new ward.”

Some residents stated that they were happy that IEC officials left the area, because they didn’t want to vote. “We are very happy because it was our expectation for the IEC not to oper-ate in our community. We are very excited that they failed to operate here,” one resident said.

Limpopo IEC elec-toral officer Ms Nka-ro Mateta confirmed that the community of Mulima chased away IEC officers and she said that nine voting stations were closed on Saturday. She appealed to all the people who did not register to go the municipalities or to the IEC officer to register before the election in August.

A former member of staff of Munghana Lonene FM, Mr Ernest Nkanyane, celebrated his 70th birthday with his friends and family at Louis Trichardt on Saturday. With him in our photo are his daughters, Vongi and Tina.

A 27-year-old man, Mr Lucky Netshituni, died when his one-room shack burnt down during the early hours of Sunday at Thembaluvhilo.

His burnt body was discovered on the floor when members of the South African Police Services investigated the scene. According to relatives who lived with Lucky, the young man went to bed around 01:45. The possibility that he had consumed some alcohol that night was fairly high, some said.

The cause of the fire that claimed Netshituni’s life is unknown.

Community members described him as a “quiet and peaceful” person who was mostly referred to as “One Man”. One of the deceased’s friends said that he and some other friends had been with Lucky a few hours before the incident and little had they known that they would never see their friend again.

“I don’t recall ‘One man’ being too drunk that evening; yes, he had a beer or two, but to be drunk to the extent that he could burn to death just like that baffles me,” he said.

Makhado Ward 35 councillor Mr Tshifhiwa Mamafha said that he was saddened by the tragedy

and by the fact that they had no means of assistance in cases of fire. “We are working with relevant stakeholders within the community to ensure that we assist the family where we can,” said Mamafha.

Spokesperson for the Mphephu police station constable Omphulusa Tshikalaha confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened and the case was being investigated.

Burglars target Ridgeway CollegeIt seems to be tough times for all, even crim-inals, as they now seem to target schools to burgle.

Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt was notified by its security company on Sunday that the alarm had been triggered. When Mr Bruce Wells, executive head of the college, arrived on the scene with fellow teachers, they were met by devastation. The criminals, it would seem, had come prepared with all the necessary tools of the trade. Wells even discovered a screwdriver left behind by one of the burglars.

First the thugs gained entry to the school by breaking down the newly built northern palisade fence. Once on the premises, the thugs made for the school’s tuck shop, where they forced open

the reinforced steel bars. According to Wells, the thieves only made a mess inside the shop in their quest for cash, but fortunately for the school, no money is kept inside the shop.

When their search turned up nothing, the thieves moved on to the main school building. First they tried to pry open the Trelidor safety gate next to the front entrance of the school. When they could not manage to get the door open, the thugs proceeded to climb onto the roof of the school, where they managed to cut three openings in the roof. It seems, however, that they did not gain entry into the school by means of the roof.

The thugs managed to force open another steel safety door that closed off one of the school’s side hallways (to the left of the main entrance). Once inside the school, the thugs made straight for the reception area, where they forced open the door. This was when the alarmed was triggered. However, this did not deter the thieves in their plans – they had already jammed sticks into the school gate’s padlock to prevent the security company’s response team from gaining access into the property.

Inside the reception area, the group climbed inside the receptionists’ office box in search of money and valuables. It was only when they could not find any money that they fled the scene.

Apart from the repair costs the school is bur-dened with now, they fear that the robbers might return. Wells said that since they discovered the break-in, a group of suspicious-looking men in a white Izuzu bakkie was noticed hanging around in the vicinity of the school. Increased security measures and vigilant guards placed at the school, however, seem to have foiled the thugs or any would-be thugs’ plans to return.

Wells’ advice, not only to other Louis Trichardt schools but also to residents, was to be more vig-ilant about their security measures. “Schools are becoming a soft target for criminals,” said Wells.

In the meantime, the newspaper’s enquiry into the matter with the Makhado Police yielded no response. At this stage the station is yet to be ap-pointed a permanent station commander, with the communications officer being on maternity leave.

agenda known only to the leaders. “You can see these cars here and people, they are here to give me support and I appreciate this,” he said. He said he opened a case in the fi rst incident and the second one and hoped that the police would make a break-

through soon. Limpopo police spokesperson Col Ronel Otto said they had arrested eight people for public violence but added that they had not arrested anybody in connection with the arson incident at Munyai’s place.

Second time unlucky for Thomas Munyai, who had his spaza shop and house torched by angry residents.

Loads of building sand blockade the main road leading to Masakona village.

Angry community members at Masakona Manashi village outside Louis Trichardt have once again torched the house of a former councillor. This is the second time that Mr Thomas Munyai (55) has faced the wrath of the community.

He was fi rst targeted when angry residents of the village accused him of behind the move to include them in a new municipality that will merge parts of Vuwani and Malamulele, a move they were against.

In the fi rst incident, which took place on 4 March, his spaza shop with all its contents were gutted in a fi re. Munyai was not dettered and he picked up the pieces and refurbished his shop and it was running again.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, angry community members again torched his spaza shop, but this time they also burnt down two houses, a nine-roomed and a three-roomed house in the yard. Nothing was saved in the latest incident and Munyai and his family were left only with the clothing they were wearing.

The latest accusation labelled against him is that he assisted the IEC staff to enter the village after the community had blocked the entrances, allegations he fl atly denies. Munyai estimates the damage to be around R1million. Munyai said he was at home with his family when he received a tip-off that a mob would come and kill him and set his property alight. “I notifi ed the police, who came and gave us an escort. Just a few metres from my house, we met a big mob approaching my house. It was mostly young people who pelted the vehicles with different objects, after realising police were escorting me. While at the police station, we saw a big fl ame and we knew it was our house. I only returned home the following day to fi nd the whole house gutted.”

Munyai is blaming the local leadership “for inciting residents against him.” He said it was part of a planned campaign against him. He further indicated that he had the support of the villagers who had realised that they were being used for an

Pupils at the locked gate at Shayandima Secondary School.

Learning and teaching at Shayandima Secondary School outside Thohoyandou came to a complete halt last Tuesday when angry parents and pupils locked the main gate, barring all people from entering.

According to reports they were protesting against "lazy educators," who they say are not dedicated to their work. They also demanded that an HOD in English leave the school or else there would be no classes at the school.

Waving placards, the parents and pupils, who had arrived early in the morning, sang and danced at the gate, demanding that the circuit manager come to the school to resolve the matter.

SGB secretary Robert Ra-mukeka said things were not run-ning smoothly at the school. "We

are tired of a situation whereby our children always come home to complain that they are not being taught. We have tried everything to resolve this issue, having engaged the principal and also the circuit without success," he added.

He accused the head of the English department, "who comes to school when he feels like it and the worst part is that he seems to be a bully who does not respect anybody. We are fed up as com-munity and we will not relax until this matter is resolved," said Ramukeka.

Ms Mercy Tshiwandimoni, SGB chairperson, said she was appalled by the situation at the school. "The school has been turned into a restaurant, where most of the time is used for cook-ing. Some of the educators are no

longer giving time to their work and this has a detrimental effect on our children," she said.

Later on in the day, the circuit manager arrived and, together with and the SGB and educators, were holed up in a meeting for most of the day. Limpopo educa-tion spokesperson Dr Naledzani Rasila said parents should follow the right protocols in solving issues. "Firstly, the challenges should be brought to the atten-tion of the department where an amicable solution could be found rather than disrupting the educa-tion of the children." He added that the department's doors were always open and that parents "should feel free to approach us if challenges arise."

At the time of our going to press, classes had resumed at the school.

Murunwa community on the rampage after funeral of murdered womanMembers of the Murunwa community barricaded the Witvlag road with big rocks and tree logs on Sunday af-ter the burial of 56-year-old mother of five Mrs Naledzani Sikhwayi.

Sikhwayi's body was discov-ered with stab wounds at the Mutshedzi river last Monday.

Angry community members feel that the police are failing the community, "as they have done nothing more than arrest the suspect."

One of the community mem-bers said that they would contin-ue to block the road until they saw justice was served for the deceased. “We are not going to let this vanish like other cases. We need to see the law fighting for us and not against us,” said the community member.

The councillor for Ward 30 of the Makhado Municipality, Mr Fhumulani Madzhiga, said that different stakeholders in the community would meet and try to find a way forward. He added that the community members had indicated that they wanted to march and submit a memo-randum to the relevant people

and to ensure that justice was being served.

The spokesperson for the police at Siloam, W/O Edward Tharaga, indicated that police visibility would be high around the Murunwa area to ensure

that there was no vandalism and public violence. He added that an inquest docket case was still open. The police are inves-tigating and the suspect is still being questioned by the police, Tharaga said.

Bishop Elijah Tshidane passes awayThe death of a well-known spiritual leader, Bishop Shan-dukani Elijah Tshindane (60) of the Israel Apostolic Church in Zion, has saddened people countrywide. Bishop Tshin-dane succumbed to a short illness at the Polokwane Medi-Clinic last Wednesday, April 6.

After completing matric at Mphephu High School, Tshin-dane went to Mangosuthu Tech-nicon in Durban, where he stud-ied for a diploma in Business Management.

Born at Thononda village on 02 June 1956, Bishop Tshindane was not an ordinary religious leader, but a real community leader. He was the first chair-person of the Thononda branch of the South African National Civics Organization (Sanco). He was one of the advisers to the local traditional leader.

Before he was ordained as a bishop in 2008, Tshidane was actively involved in football. He started playing football in 1980. At that stage he was the captain of a local team, Thononda All Stars. He migrated to Lutomboni Fire Boys in 1985, where he served as player-coach for several years before he became the team’s head coach.

When Lutomboni Fire Boys sold their status to M& R Re-member Fire Boys in 2002, Tshindane refused to leave foot-

ball. He was one of the founder members of Lutomboni Junior Fire Boys. He led Junior Fire Boys to numerous successes, including winning the Magwaba Soccer League championship in 2007.

When his father, Bishop Man-zini Tshindane, passed away, he took over as the new bishop in 2008. Although he resigned as coach after he was ordained as bishop, Tshindane continued

to assist local football teams financially, saying it was part of his social responsibility as a religious leader.

Bishop Tshindane was a public servant at the time of his death. He was an Assistant Director in the Department of Economic Development and Environmental Affairs.

He will be buried at Lutom-boni village cemetery tomorrow morning.

The late Bishop Shandukani Elijah Tshindane.

Musina’s new R320 million mall is quickly taking shapeThe construction of the R320 mil-lion Musina Mall, which started four months ago, is going smoothly and prospects that the contractors will meet the March 2017 comple-tion date are promising.

The mall is an extension of the existing Great North Plaza, which currently houses 40 shops. The addi-tion of Musina Mall will increase the Great North Plaza from 14 000 m² to 34 000 m².

The mall came about as a result of the partnership between Investec and the Moolman Group, who will develop the centre as co-owners.

Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu says: “Apart from being de-clared a provincial growth point, the initiative will also play a meaningful role as Musina prepares to become a city in the near future. Upon com-

pletion, the mall will infl uence the highly effective cross-border trade and the establishment of the Special Economic Zone in our border town.

“This will also help to sensitize everyone, especially prospective investors, that there is potential for economic growth here in Musina. The initiative will transform our town into a top investment destination that will attract businesses and direct foreign investment while at the same time accelerating industrial development and realizing the country’s industrial action plan and the new growth path.”

Dzebu says during the construc-tion period, the mall will create approximately 500 job opportunities. “Another 500 jobs will be created upon completion and this will help to eradicate the challenge of the high unemployment rate in Musina.”

Construction work is progressing well at the site of the R320 million Musina Mall.

The sound of 21 gunshots by members of Mk-honto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) reverberated through the cemetery of Musina as the coffin containing the remains of Lucas “Dra” Moemi was lowered to its final resting place on Saturday. This was the perfect way to pay tribute to this gallant fighter of the liberation struggle who died on Saturday, 3 April, after collapsing at home. He was 74.

Shortly before the burial, hundreds of mourners filled up the Lesley Manyathela stadium in Nance-field location.

Moemi’s political life started in 1961 when he was a student at Mokone High School. Following his strong opposition to the apartheid regime, he was banned from attending any school in South Africa for a period of five years, forcing him to come back to Musina. At the border town he as-sisted people who were going into exile to cross over to the then Rhodesia.

Moemi was recruited to join MK, the military wing of the ANC, in 1986 and he trained inside the country to carry out MK operations. He was part of the committee that took up arms in the mid-eighties to fight the apartheid regime when it wanted to move the people from Nancefield to the farm Magasand near Tshipise.

A gallant fighter, Moemi was instrumental in the establishment of the civic movement in Musina, resulting in the formation of the Mu-sina Action Committee. He was also part of a committee that welcomed freedom fighters when they returned from exile after the unbanning of liberation movements in the coun-try, thereby playing a critical role in the formation of the ANC structures in Musina. At the time of his death, Moemi was the deputy secretary of the ANC Vhembe Regional Vet-erans League and member of the provincial executive committee of the ANC Veterans League.

In his address during the funeral procession, the provincial secretary of the ANC Veterans League in Limpopo, Rashaka Ratshitanga, said Moemi had played a vital role in the formation of the ANC Veterans League in Limpopo. He added: “It is because of Comrade Dra’s encouragement that we final-ly established the ANC Veterans League here in this province. We became the first province to launch the league and other provinces fol-lowed suit.”

The chairperson of the Limpopo

ANC Veterans League and former deputy mayor of Chase Town in Canada, Jacob Marule, described Moemi as a disciplined, honest and sincere cadre of the movement to the end.

Khathu Netshifhefhe, the regional secretary of the ANC in Vhembe, said Comrade Dra had dedicated his life to the struggle against apart-heid. “He was a true cadre of the movement, a comrade who used to fight foreign tendencies in the ANC.” Netshif-hefhe said “Dra” led from the front and never fought for position in the movement.

In her address, the mayor of Musina Lo-cal Municipality, Cllr. Mihloti Muhlupe, said Moemi had engaged in the struggle not for personal gain or glory.

“He became a fighter for liberation because he understood that he had to be ready to make the necessary sacrifices,

expecting no personal reward except the reward of freedom.” She concluded her address by com-menting that the municipality would name the newly constructed community hall in Nancefield after Moemi.

Members of the MKMVA carry the casket containing the remains of Lucas “Dra” Moemi to a waiting hearse shortly after the service at Lesley Manyathela Stadium.

“Help youth realise their dreams” - Simango

Mvelaphanda students get encouragement

Lack of support at one stage nearly led Joshua Simango to quitting the community work he was doing for the youth at Tshavhalovhedzi in the Nzhelele area, but the pressure from persistent youths forced him to change his mind.

Despite the odds, such as financial support among others, Simango (31), founder of Vhu-koni Youth Entertainment, is back doing what he likes most,

which is taking the youth from the streets and engaging them in the positives of life.

“We started this organization in 2013 after realizing that many of our youths were going to waste with nothing to do after school. This area where we stay is one of the poorest and has no form of entertainment. Our youth were tempted to fall for bad things such as substance and drug abuse, with some drowning in

alcohol and ending up engaging in unplanned sex, with negative outcomes.”

He stated that they felt that it was important to do something to turn the situation around. They are at present training the youth in drama and dances, including traditional and modern dancing, poetry and music, to keep them busy. According to him, many are now realizing their dreams, because they are talented and

First-entering students at Mve-laphanda Development and Projects at Tshisahulu outside Thohoyandou were told to fo-cus on their studies in order to achieve their goals of gaining skills and bringing a meaning-ful change to their lives and their communities.

The welcoming function was recently held at the centre’s main campus at Tshisahulu and was attended by community struc-tures, businesspeople, former students and traditional leaders.

Those who contributed to the development of the centre were given certificates and trophies, while others who had been given free bursaries to study basic com-puting received their certificates.

The guest speaker and well-known educator Ms Mashango Shirley Mugwena said the coun-try had an acute shortage of skills that led to the importation of those rare skills from neighbour-ing countries. “Skills develop-ment becomes a very important catalyst in job creation. Please

embrace the rare opportunity offered you here and go out there and make a contribution to your country and your families,” she added. Mvelaphanda founder Ms Esther Mushaathama said the centre would continue being an agent of positive change in the country. “We are proud as an in-stitution to have produced many who are now leaders in many spheres of life. That is the reason why we are giving so many free bursaries to acquire skills that will change their lives,” she said.

received a platform to showcase what they have. On 18 June they will be hosting a festival at Mushaathoni Second-ary School. The event will feature several well-known artists who will motivate the youth. They need sponsorships, however, to fund the event and are urging businesspeople around Vhembe to assist them “in making the youth in our area realise their dreams.”

They are also call-ing on all youths in the Nzhelele area to come and be part of the day. According to him, they are planning to transform the day into a Nzhelele Youth Day “where all youths will meet and be motivat-ed while sharing their experiences with each other.”

Interested people can phone Simango on 071 257 9518.

A newsreader at PhalaPhala FM, Mashudu Doyoyo, used to sit at a table and listen to the news on radio and watch the news on television for the most part of the day in preparation for a career on radio.

“I had all along loved listening to news as a way of getting to know about my world,” she said. “We live in a world and times that demand from us to open our eyes and ears at all times.”

A resident of Duthuni Tshivhambe, Mashudu has risen from community radio to national radio. Her journey is one that proves that hard work pays off.

She attended Tshivhambe Primary School and matriculated at Khwevha Commercial School. She stated that her family was not very happy when she told them that she wanted to do a degree in media studies, especially because she was good in commercial subjects.

“If you want to fi sh, go to the river or dam – you don’t have to sit at home and expect

fi sh to fi ll up your basket,” she said. “So, this is exactly what encouraged me. As a student at the University of Venda, I heard about a call for newsreader audi-tions at Univen FM. I prepared myself and went there, all ready and confi dent that I was the right candidate for the post.”

The audition resulted in Mashudu’s being given the slot of a newsreader and current affairs presenter. She was very happy about her success and she knew that all she had to do was to pull up her socks and work harder.

“I was a student and being involved in community radio work helped me to manage and cope with my school work,” she said. “It was no longer just media theory fi rst but theory and practice at the same time.”

She was with Univen FM between 2009 and 2011. In 2012, she heard about a post at Phalaph-ala FM and she sent in an appli-

cation. “I was called for an interview and audition, and all went well,” she said. “I got the job I

had always wanted, and it all felt good.”

Ground-hornbill gets second chance after being rescued

EFF and DA disrupt Tshikota title deed ceremony

A community member of Camp-bell just outside Musina, Ms Flora Ndadza, and her family were res-ently instrumental in saving the life of a female ground-hornbill caught in a snare.

They managed to free her and, knowing she was member on an endangered species, they kept her in a cage and tried to feed her mice and grasshoppers they had caught. The bird was, however, too stressed and badly wounded to eat.

Fortunately she was spotted by a local farmer who had come to buy pigs. He got in touch with the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project, which has been working to protect the species in the Limpopo River Valley since 2000.

They, together with Mr Leon de

Jager, head of the Limpopo provin-cial conservation agency, rushed the bird to the Monte Casino Bird Gardens where Dr Katja Koeppel operated successfully on the bird.

Two weeks later, thanks to the care from the team at Monte Casino Bird Gardens, the bird had healed well enough to be returned to the wild.

According to Ms Lucy Kemp, project manager of the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project, “this was a massive collaborative effort to keep a female ground-hornbill safe, so that she can return to the wild to do what is so desperately needed by this endangered species – to be able to rear another generation.”

For more information regarding the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project, visit www.ground-hornbill.org.za.

Members of the EFF and the DA disrupted the process during which the MEC for Coghsta, Makoma Makhupetje, handed over title deeds to residents of Tshikota a fortnight ago.

The MEC started off by visiting three houses where she handed over title deeds to the owners. The delegation then proceeded to the Tshikota community hall, where community members were waiting to receive over 900 title deeds.

The initiative formed part of an effort by Cogh-sta to try and restore dignity to the poor as some families still continue to be evicted from their prop-erties. When the MEC addressed the community, she urged the residents to protect and respect their title deeds as these are their security.

Ms Makhupetje warned those people with money not to take advantage of the poor title deed owners and steal their properties. “No one can evict you anymore; this is your licence. This also means an end to houses being sold with people inside them,” she said.

The MEC reminded residents that the history of Tshikota was also a history of forced removals. Some four decades ago, residents were removed against their will to areas such as Vleyfontein and Madombidzha.

Among the 1 154 houses at Tshikota, 906 title deeds have already been registered and endorsed.

Members of the EFF and the DA were very vo-ciferous and demanded that the MEC hand over all title deeds in the presence of community members. They started singing and chanting and the police later had to remove them from the stage while

escorting the MEC away. The local DA councillor, Masilo

Mampashe, criticized the MEC for handing over some title deeds at the houses of people. The unhappy residents wanted to know why only these houses had been selected.

One of the recipients of a title deed, Ms Ouma Manganyi, said that she had been staying in her house since 2001. “It is only now that I re-ally understand what a title deed is. I was not informed as to how it works.

I did not know its importance. I was comfortable and believed that it was my house,” she said.

She said that she was going to sit down with her children and explain to them the importance of a title deed and why it was important to keep it safe. “My next step is to take all their birth certificates and go and do the honourable thing of registering all my children as beneficiaries if I pass on,” she said.

Ouma Manganyi (left) receives her title deed from the Makhado mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, while the MEC for Coghsta, Makoma Makhurupetje, looks on.

A singer from Nzhelele Dzanani, Ambani Mukwevho, known as the queen of house, recently re-leased a new single, Home.

Ambani (26) started by singing disco music and hip-hop in 2007. Her passion for music begun when she started singing at school and in church choirs.

“Singing in these places ignited my passion for singing. It really motivated me, because I had an opportunity to express myself,” said Ambani.

She added that she was inspired to sing by many artists in the music industry. “I always knew that I could excell and be one of them,” she added.

The love for music was in her DNA, she said, and according to

her she used collect CDs and write her own music at an early age. “Hip-hop and house music are my cornerstone. I can write my own lyrics,” she said. She then visited a local recording studio and devel-oped an interest to record her own album. Before the new single, she had released one album, Marry me.

She became popular when she was given opportunity by DJ Bujo Mujo to record the wedding song Marry me. It became a hit single and a local hit.

Home is doing very well on the market and she added that she was getting a good response from music lovers. She has now signed a deal with the KCP record Label (Kushesh Creative Production/Promotion). She advised people who have a passion for music to believe in themselves.

A gospel-singing sensation, Abby Mamphogoro, fi nished recording a live DVD a fortnight ago and he believes that music lovers will love this live project.

The DVD, which will be released soon, is titled Tombo Langa, which can be translated as “My Rock”.

“Tombo Langa was recorded live at Winman Studios and was engi-neered by the legendary Emmanuel Mamphogoro,” he said. The DVD comprises six songs, all sung in Tshivenda. “It is a home-coming en-counter, due to the dominance of the hymns,” he said. “Some songs were inspired by Emmanuel Mamphogoro at home.”

This artist’s debut offer was titled Jesus Exaltation, an album with 10 songs and a beautifully designed booklet containing the lyrics.

He started singing at home as a

nine-year-old boy. He is a drummer who has worked with major singers and musicians, such as Worship House on their Worship House Project 3.

Before going solo, he worked with the musical group Echo, garnering a lot of experience. “I continue to see music as a form of expression that begins deep within the heart,” he said. “This is the only form of com-munication that one cannot ignore.”

He is also inspired by ordinary people that he comes across dur-ing his performances at weddings, shows, and the church. “To keep my soul strong, I pray a lot and I am a member of the Vineyard Missions Centre under the leadership of Pastor NA Muhovha at Raliphaswa village,” he said.

Abby Mamphogoro can be reached on Facebook or by phoning 071 674 8512. His DVD will be available in all music stores soon.

During the day, he is a hardwork-ing policeman who is dedicated to his work without compromise. But during weekends and after hours, Robert Tshidino Nemukh-wathoni of Vondwe village will make you laugh until you cry.

This is because this warrant officer, who is attached to the SAPS in Sibasa, has a rare talent of entertaining others by imperson-ating people. His act as a woman is well known at social gatherings in Vhembe.

When he starts his performances, most people will mistake him for a woman until they recognize his voice. Nemukhwathoni recently left everyone in stitches and at a re-cent event at Mukula, he ascended the stage in a dress, wig, earrings, handbag, women’s shoes and some attractive make-up. Like a model,

he walked around proudly greeting people with a big smile on his face.

Asked where he got the women’s clothing from, Nemukhwathoni quickly responded: “All the attire belongs to my wife, Salphinah. She is very supportive of what I do. She is the one who dressed me before I came here and my kids were responsible for all the make-up. My wife and kids never miss my performances because they really love what I do.”

He says he sometimes gets invi-tations to perform at other events around his home village. “Despite my busy schedule as a policeman, I give myself time to practice and come up with new tactics to make the audience happy. I welcome any invitation to perform as long as it does not interfere with my day-to-day work as a policeman.”

RnB artistBy Mbulaheni Ridovhona

An RnB artist from Madombidzha, Lufuno “Bokha” Mathabela (30), plans on releasing his third album later this year.

Mathabela says that music has always been in his blood. “I started to sing while I was still in high school in Grade 8,” he says. His dreams of producing his own album had to wait for a few years until such time as he could gather enough money to pay for the recording.

“I started to fall in love with music when I was inspired by my teacher. She was a sensational singer. Her voice was so eloquent,” he says.

According to Mathabela, he is receiving great support from his family and friends. “My parents are so supportive; they are my backbone. My friends have also been motivating me since I began this music journey,” he adds.

Mathabela has already released two albums, Vhuyani (come back) and Miloroni (dreams) and he also has one single called Aringa fani. His two albums have been well received by the local communities around Madombidzha.

The Mavungeni Agricultural Cooperative recently received a new tractor from the Department of Trade and Industry in Vleyfontein. The cooperative was started in 2006 by a group of unemployed people from Bungeni village and is an agricultural business that specialises in vegetables production and bee farming. People watched in disbelief as a huge bird (probably a secretary bird, hawk or falcon) squashed a big snake with its legs at Makonde Royal Palace (Musanda), near the Raluvhimba Mountain last week. In the photo, headman Edward Ravhura stands with the snake after it was killed by the big bird.

Pioneer in region’s newspaper industry diesA pioneer in the newspaper publish-ing industry and also the person who started the Limpopo Mirror newspaper, Johann du Plessis (68), died last week at his home in Kleinmond in the Western Cape.

According to Johann’s wife, Melinda, he has been battling with his health the past few months. He died, possibly be-cause of a heart-related illness, at his home last Wednesday morning.

Johann entered the newspaper pub-lishing industry at a young age when he started working in the sales department of the Citizen daily newspaper. From here he moved to the then Pietersburg, to take up a position as sales manager at the Northern Review newspaper. Under his guidance

the sales department flourished and the Review quickly became the biggest news-paper in the district, often going well past the 80-page mark.

In 1985 Johann made a very bold move and started the Zoutpansberger newspaper in Louis Trichardt. He literally packed his stuff in a caravan, hooked it behind his Peugeot, and temporarily settled in the municipal caravan park. The first edition of this newspaper appeared on the streets on 25 January 1985. Johann’s wife joined him a short while later and, for the next 30 years, Louis Trichardt would be their home.

In August 1990 Johann’s entrepre-neurial spirit caused him to make another bold move when he started the Venda

Mirror newspaper. This was in a period prior to the 1994 elections when very few newspapers aimed at predominantly black communities existed. This paper quickly grew into one of the biggest success stories of the community press industry.

At the end of 1999, Johann was diag-nosed with cancer of the bladder and had to undergo a major operation. He fought this challenge bravely and almost fully recovered, but the long sickness took its toll and Johann felt that he needed a break from the strenuous world of publishing.

In December 2000, Johann sold the two newspapers and for the next five years he kept himself busy running a small pho-tographic and video studio. The Venda Mirror was renamed to the Limpopo

Johann du Plessis (right) photographed last year during the 25th birthday celebrations of the Mirror with a good friend of his, Johann Gilfillan.

Mirror to better reflect the demographics of the distribution area.

Johann and Melinda left the town in 2005 to settle in Kleinmond in the Western Cape.

During his years in the Soutpansberg, Johann was a very active member of the local community. He served on the Louis Trich-ardt Golf Club’s com-mittee and spearheaded numerous projects. He was also a member of the local Rotary Club and served as president in 2003/4. A memorial service was held in Kleinmond on Tuesday morning. He is survived by his wife, two daughters (Tania and Jeannine) and two grandchildren.

Soutpansberg East Circuit awards the top achiever schools

School shoes for poor and vulnerable pupils

The Soutpansberg East Circuit recently rewarded the top achiever schools and pupils of the 2015 aca-demic year. The event was held at Louis Trichardt High School.

The circuit manager, Mr Falaza Baloyi, praised the team work done by different teachers to make sure that the pupils scored high marks. “The circuit has a history of good performances and trophy-scooping tricks,” he said. “Over the past five years, there was only one year in which the circuit did not receive an award in the province.”

He stated that he viewed the circuit

through the Biblical David’s eye as he looked at Goliath and saw a target big enough not to miss. “Therefore, as long as the circuit is this big, we shall always collect an award in the province,” he said.

“This year we want position 1 in the category of top circuits in the province. We are tired of playing sec-ond fiddle to other circuits.” Baloyi further said that the Soutpansberg East Circuit was the biggest circuit in the country in terms of the number of schools.

Poor pupils from different secondary and primary schools around the ar-eas of the Masia traditional council and Masakona received a huge gift when the One Million School Shoe Campaign donated 200 pairs of school shoes and uniforms to them.

The event recently took place at the Matsila Royal Kraal.

The chairperson of the campaign, Mr Thabiso Chauke, said that the NGO was formed a few years ago with the aim of helping disadvantaged pupils whose parents

The best overall learner was Max-well-Junior Rotodwa Ramaite from Litshovhu High School. Maanda Joseph Phathela (Louis Trchardt High School) came second and Marubini Maria Tshivhenga from Litshovhu High School was third.

Louis Trichardt High School got the award for the top-performing school in the circuit with the highest

percentage of distinctions in all sub-jects and for being the best overall performing school in terms of quan-tity (results 97%). They were also the top school in matric exemptions.

The principal for the Hoërskool Louis Trichardt High School, Mr Louis Cilliers, said that the awards meant a lot to the teachers, the learners and the school community. “The awards definitely confirm that we are an effective school in terms of our achievements, dedication and commitment to perform and to keep on performing in the years to come,” he said.

The principal of Louis Trichardt High School, Mr Louis Cilliers, said that the awards meant a lot to the teachers, the learners and the school community.

Chauke said grow-ing up in a village had taught him to understand the hard-ships faced by rural families.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila could not hide his happiness. He said it was good to be re-ceiving from one of the residents. He told the pupils to count

Joe Maweja to host Gawula ClassicIt will be another busy weekend for the teams campaigning under the banner of the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League, or the Vo-dacom Promotional League as it was formerly known. Seven matches will be played at various venues throughout the province tomorrow while only one will be played this evening (Friday).

Joe Maweja will host the Giyani side, Gawula Classic, at the Tshifulanani Stadium. Maweja are in a winning mode. They won two important league matches in a row. They beat Mighty FC 2-0 at the Tshifulanani Stadium two weeks ago before collecting full points at the expense of Bilika All Stars at the Giyani Stadium last Sunday.

According to the general manager of Maweja, Mr Mukondi “Liweja” Nemavhulani, they want to win tomorrow’s match and move to the top five teams on the log. He revealed that all his players have a clean bill of health.

The Giyani derby between Giyani Hotspurs and Bilika All Stars will be staged at the Giyani Stadium. It remains to be seen whether Bilika will rise to the occasion and make Hotspurs pay for the 1-2 defeat they suffered at the hands of Joe Maweja last weekend.

Great North FC will host Mosesetjane All Stars at the Seshego Stadium. The pace setters, Magezi FC, will entertain A1 Terrors at the TT Cholo Stadium in Polokwane.

Bucs on top in seven goal spectacleGogobole Bucs played their hearts out to silence Tshiozwi Dynamos in an MMK Ad-ministrators League match at the Gogobole grounds on Saturday. The final score was 4-3.

The game was played at an even pace, with both sides creating scoring chances. Dynamos missed numerous chances in the opening minutes, while Bucs were dictating terms in the middle of the park. The only player who was cautioned with a card was Zane Mulaudzi of Dynamos He kicked the keeper of Bucs and Referee Shakes

Thabelo Tharini of Bucs (left) and Zane Mulaudzi attack the ball.

Netshiavha was quick to flash a yellow card.

Bucs were the first to find the net. In the 15th minute, Chicks Sikhwivhilu blasted in a rocket from the 25-meter area. Dy-namos fought back strongly and within five minutes, Nen-govhela was on target with a half-volley, following a neat pass from Velaphi Mpha-phuli.

Bucs took the lead again in the 37th min-ute. Lutendo Mabasa found the net from a set piece. Dynamos levelled matters via Matodzi Maruli in the 39th minute to bring the half-time score to 2-2.

Early in the second half, Thabelo Tha-rini forced his way through the defence of Dynamos and released

a rocket from outside the box to score Bucs’ third goal.

As if he was a spectator, the keeper, Vhuthu Netshiomvani, watched the ball hit the net with-out making any attempt to make a save.

The wheel of fortune turned in favour of Dy-namos in the 65th minute. They were awarded a penalty. Mpho Mavhandu converted it from the white spot to equaliser.

The winning goal for Bucs was scored by Fani Sadiki late in the match.

Not only did Madridtas FC collect full points in their MMK Administrators Soccer League match against Tshi-dimbini Brave Lions at the Tshifudi Stadium on Sunday, but they also registered a historic victory. Brave Lions were brutally walloped 11-0. Six of the 11 goals were scored by the team’s leading goal scorer, Eethe Khaukanani.

It took Madridtas two min-utes to open their account. Eethe Khaukanani finished off a rebound, following a scramble within the box. Khaukanani was on target again five minutes later. He headed home after a square pass by the former Black Leopards right back, Ernot Dzaga. Brave Lions lost shape in the middle of the park after the second goal for Madridtas. The home side capitalized on the setback and scored their third goal via Ndivhuwo Masakona in the 16th minute. He unleashed a long-range ground cutter. Although victory was almost certain, Madridtas did not stop fighting. They continued to initiate some defense-split-ting moves from behind. They increased the tally through Rinae Malinda.

The keeper of Brave Lions palmed the ball back into play and Malinda, who was in the perfect scoring

position, easily tapped the ball in. Madridtas were five goals up when the referee blew the half-time whistle.

Khaukanani scored the fifth in the 40th minute. He dribbled past the keeper and tapped the ball into an empty net. Lutendo Mulaudzi, who scored a hat trick in the game, was on target in the 54th minute.

Khaukanani forced his way through the defense of Lions and scored the seventh in the 60th minute. Humbulani Simba, who came on as a substitute for

Lufuno Matumba, made his presence felt when he scored the eighth moments thereafter.

Lutendo Mulaudzi received a neat pass from Rinae Malinda and scored the ninth in the 78th minute. Ndivhuwo Masakona was brought down within the box and the referee awarded a penalty to Madridtas. Khau-kanani made no mistake from the penalty spot. Lutendo Mu-laudzi completed his hat trick when he scored with a bicycle kick in the dying minutes of the game.

Solomon Noko of Madridtas (front) and Rinae Muthevhuli of Brave Lions chase the ball.

Brutal 11-0 victory for Madridtas FC

Leopards to meet struggling MthathaAfter collecting the maximum league points at the Thohoy-andou Stadium last Saturday, Black Leopards will play an-other league match at the same venue this weekend. They will host Mthatha Bucks on Sunday afternoon.

Just like Black Leopards, Mthatha Bucks also won their match last weekend. They beat Milano United 2-0 at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

The Thohoyandou outfit have only pride at stake against Mtha-tha Bucks, while it will be a matter of life and death for the Eastern Cape side. Bucks are fighting for survival as they are currently lying in the second-last position on the log. Leopards crushed Mthatha Bucks 2-0 at the Mthatha Stadium in their first-round league match six months ago.

The Leopards’ regular players, Ruggert Nyundu and Meshack Maphangule, will be available for selection on Sunday. Nyundu was attending to family matters last Saturday while Maphangule was medically unfit, due to the injury he sustained in their game against Moroka Swallows last month. It will be the second match for Leopards’ new head coach, Mr Sello Chokoe.

The first whistle is scheduled to be blown at 15:00. The tail-enders, Moroka Swallows, will host Highlandspark at the Dob-sonville Stadium. Highlandspark are still fresh from a 2-0 victory over Witbank Spurs. Mbombela United will meet Witbank Spurs

in their Mpumalanga derby at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Emalahleni.

Cape Town All Stars will fly to Phuthaditshaba in the Free State, where they will battle it out for league points against African Warriors. The log leaders, Baro-ka FC, will be the visitors in their match against Vasco Da Gama at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. The Cape Town derby between Milano United and FC Cape Town will be played at the

Athlone Stadium.Royal Eagles will enjoy the

home-ground advantage in their match against Amazulu at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pieter-maritzburg.

The fact that Amazulu and Royal Eagles are close contend-ers for the league title is reason enough for soccer fanatics to expect a thriller. Thanda Royal Zulu and Santos will fight for league points at the Umhlatuze Sports Complex.

Available for selection: Leopards’ midfielder, Meshack Maphangule.

Baroka FC drop two important pointsSoccer donation for development teamsThe National First Division log leaders, Baroka FC, dropped two significant points when they drew 1-1 with Mbombela United at the Kanyamazane Stadium in Nelspruit on Sunday.

The Polokwane side took the lead in the 44th minute via Loyiso Simandla. He beat the keeper with a scorching long-range drive.

The home side spoiled the party towards the end of the game. Mbombela were award-ed a penalty two minutes before the final whistle when Baroka were almost sure of victory. Victor Shongwe scored from the penalty spot with a half volley.

Baroka are still leading the pack, but the team is only two points ahead of Highlandspark.

In their Cape Town derby at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, Vasco Da Gama beat Santos 2-0. Sphesihle Stuurman opened the Vasco account in the 11th minute. He beat the San-tos’ keeper, Tashrique Goldman, with a ground cutter. Both sides had their scoring chances after the goal, but the final goal only came in the 81st minute when Daryl Smith scored after a square pass by Stuurman.

Amazulu lost 1-2 to Thanda Royal Zulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban. Thanda took the lead in the 11th minute when Menzi Hlope beat the offside trap and scored easily. Usuthu were only behind for seven minutes as Zaid Patel was on target in the 18th minute with a header.

Cape Town All Stars shared the spoils with Royal Eagles at the Athlone Stadi-um in Cape Town. They drew 1-1.

Highlandspark continued to pave their way up when they beat Witbank Spurs 2-0 at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Em-

As part of sports development and keeping the youth busy in a constructive way, away from the streets, headman Tshilidzi Ravhura of Makonde is on a mission to donate soccer equip-ment to all eight football teams in his village.

The mission recently started when he donated one ball each to Makonde Football Club and Shadani Dangerous Scorpions.

Ravhura said he was touched when he got a report from his royal house that a soccer match had to be cancelled because one of the local soccer teams did not have a ball. “As a result, they forfeited the league points to the visitors. The situation was so heartbreaking that I decided to do something as a responsible leader of my village. I used to play soccer during my heydays

and I know how difficult it is to play without the necessary equipment. My target is to donate soccer balls to all the teams in my village before the end of April.”

He encourages young people to take part in sports. “By participat-ing in sports, you drastically save the time you waste doing some-thing that does not benefit you. Sports is a very useful weapon to fight against criminal activities

alahleni. Mthatha Bucks rose to the occasion and beat Milano United 3-0 at the Mthatha Stadium.

Black Leopards crushed African Warriors 2-1 at the Thohoyandou Stadium. Moroka Swallows registered their third victory by beating FC Cape Town 2-1 at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. Swallows are still lying at the bottom of the log, despite an away victory.

and drug abuse. Besides that, sport encourages a healthy lifestyle and keeps the participants fit at all times.”

He challenges local businesspeople and in-dividuals to help by donating sports equip-ment to the local clubs. “The players still need soccer boots, nets, play-ing kits and assistance with travelling costs. Together we can make a difference and we can be proud when we look back and become satisfied with our con-tributions.” The coach of Makonde Dangerous Scorpions, Mmbuiseni Madida, praised Ravhu-ra for his contribution to sports development. “The assistance came at the right time when we needed the equipment most. This is what we call true leadership and we are very thankful.”

PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF 2X500KV LINE FROM NZHELELE SUBSTATION TO CONNECT WITH POWER LINES COMING FROM TRIANGLE SUBSTATION ZIM-BABWE IN THE MUSINA DISTRICT LIMPOPO PROVINCE DEA/EIA/0002224/2013

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Project DescriptionSouth Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique entered into a strategic alliance to assist each other in ensuring continue and uninterrupted electricity supply within each of

the countries. This entails infrastructure that will allow each of the countries to send or receive electricity, as and when required, form each other. Eskom, as South Africa’s electricity producer, is in the process of developing the required infrastructure that will allow this agreement to take effect. Eskom requires the construction of two 500kv pow-er lines from the Nzhelele Substation to the Limpopo river. These two power lines will

link up with power lines that originate at Triangle substation in Zimbabwe.

LocationThe study area for this proposed activity is within the Vhembe District Municipality

region, within the Local municipality of Musina. The power lines will start at the Nzhelele Sub Station (under construction), south east of the corner N1 and the R525, Tshipis road. The power lines will then need to move north towards the Limpopo river,

where they will meet up with the Zimbabwe power lines, coming from Triangle in central Zimbabwe. Areas East and West of the town of Musina is being studied

Khathutshelo Ramovha and Pinkie Ramovha recently tied the knot at a gliterring event at the Elias Resort at Tshirolwe in Nzhelele.

Limpopo Mirror's website re-ceived the following reaction from one of our readers: Re: Story Community members re-pair Wayeni bridge - Limpopo Mirror, 1 April page 3.

Some of your statements are incorrect. Wayeni is part and

parcel of the Bungeni Traditional Authority. Mr Wisani Malele is not a chief of the village, he is an 'induna' under the Bungeni Tra-ditional Authority. The Chief of Wayeni Village is Hosi Bungeni.

Secondly, the economic hub of Hlanganani is the town of Elim,

not Bungeni. The Hlanganani Re-gional Court in Waterval, which your newspaper wrongly refer to as Waterval Magistrates' Court, serves the entire Hlanganani dis-trict, including Bungeni.

A further point of correction: most of your newspaper articles incorrectly makes statements which are questionable. On 10 October 2015, on your article regarding the Makhubele Clan's Heritage and Culture day at Nwax-inyamani Village, you incorrectly made reference to all Makhubele headmen as Hosi or Chiefs.

In particular making reference such as Hosi Nwaxinyamani. Nwaxinyamani is an induna, not Hosi.

The Hosi of Nwaxinyamani village is Hosi Mkhari, a blood rel-ative of Hosinkulu Nhjakanhjaka of Elim. Nwaxinyamani village, along with Chavani, Bokisi, Mb-hokota and Riverplaats are under Nkhensani Traditional Authority, under Hosi Mkhari.

They are not independent poli-ties, they fall under a Traditional Authority, Nkhensani.

- Makhosini Makhubele

Economic hub of Hlanganani is Elim

‘If there is a dispute regarding land issues, why don’t you lodge a claim?’

The African National Con-gress has reached a cross-

road where it has to listen to its electoral support for embattled president Jacob Zuma.

The factions aligned to Zuma, namely the ANCWL, ANCYL and MKMA, have already dis-played to the public that they support Zuma over the logic.

The ANC has been undermin-ing the intelligence of the South Africans for too long, but this time around it has crossed the red tape. ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe’s remarks during a media briefing that followed the Concourt ruling display the arrogance and stu-pidity. To suggest that recalling Zuma will tear apart the ANC was a foolish statement, because the party has already lost seven percent of its electoral support since the president ascended to the top position.

His statement amounted to suggest that Zuma is a living brand (more) important than the ANC and the stability of the country. It was stubborn to sug-gest that the exit of Jacob Zuma can cause division whilst the president himself is the source of division in the liberation move-ment due to his endless contro-versies. This is the tipping point of the ANC to resurrect itself from being “zombified”, where members operate as members of a member. For quite some time Zuma has marginalised the ANC’s popularity and now the Concourt ruling that says that he has undermined the public

protector’s remedial actions, is enough to show him an exit.

All indicators are there for everyone to observe that the country is heading to anarchy and a failed state, because of an undignified and self-centred leader. It is predictable that Zuma will never get a warm reception in public events going forward and this likely to happen in parliament. Can the ANC afford having a leader who will liaise with citizens using television platforms only? Zuma is vulner-able and this puts the ANC in the corner too.

The ANC should avoid insult-ing the people who are already fed up by using silly arguments because this incite fire where there is a smoke.

Mantashe’s remark that mem-bers of society should meet the ANC leadership regarding the Concourt ruling is of shenanigans nature. Is he suggesting that the Concourt ruling is not important? The Concourt ruling was not ambiguous, but straightforward, saying that the president’s con-duct was inconsistent with the constitution of the republic. This clearly demonstrates the inability of the head of state to hold office and there is no question on that.

Zuma’s forgiveness is unac-ceptable, because of his consis-tent deliberate tactics to mislead the country. Did he not lie when he said he had a bond with his family to build his homes and no amount from state was used except for security features? Is he not the one who said he never

requested anything and for that he won’t pay? Now he can seek for forgiveness while he was ag-gressive to the public and hostile towards the constitution.

If the ANC still has a confi-dence in its leader, let it be at their own risk. The outcomes of the local government elections will speak volumes if Zuma is an appealing brand or a rotten one. The trick is all the votes that the ANC is likely to lose significant-ly because of its dented leader may not be captured back even if Zuma may fall after the elections. The angry society may not trust the ANC under this status quo or otherwise. The same people who are zombified under the Zuma leadership are the people who are in cabals vying for power. It won’t be easy for the ANC to be trusted by the citizens due to the manner in which it handles things and the way it treats them. In the recent NEC meeting members of the public were told to bring evidence against the Gupta’s state capturing as if the phenom-enon was an organizational not a societal one that needs broader investigations.

Now church leaders, tradi-tional leaders, academics and all members of the public are urged to follow the same route as if the constitution violated was that of the ANC and not of the republic. The real ANC was buried alive in Qunu with its respected former leader Nelson Tata Mandela. What is left now is a shadow.

ANC between a rock and a hard place

Rendani Munzhelele, Moni-toring and Evaluation Student, Wits University, writes:

A recent survey by the Blue Drop Certification Pro-

gramme, a state body that helps regulate drinking water, rated Limpopo as the worst province.

The majority of the municipal-ities in Limpopo were found to be providing low quality water, not suitable for human consumption. For example, the Vhembe and Mookgopong municipalities scored the lowest at 39% and 26%, respectively.

Limpopo is drought-stricken, which has a debilitative effect on the availability of water. Nevertheless, areas like Mopani and Vhembe continue to expe-rience water shortages despite the availability of water sources, such as the new Nandoni Dam in the Vhembe District.

Many boreholes have been drilled to alleviate the situation, particularly in Mopani District, but the situation is not improving. Water tank services are available but are not frequently provided to communities.

The challenges mentioned above have far-reaching conse-quences for the health of citizens in particular and for the economic development of the province in general.

Some water services author-ities attribute the causes of the water challenges to drought, aging infrastructure, incapacity of the infrastructure to meet the demands of the communities, technical faults and non-payment of services by residents which could provide the much-needed

financial resources for main-taining and upgrading water infrastructure.

In-as-much as I agree to the reasons advanced above, the in-ability of the province to provide clean water to its citizens under-mines the provisions of the Bill of Rights, and is, therefore, a gross violation of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

It again fails to meet at least the minimum basic need of water provision, as espoused in the Reconstruction and Develop-ment Programme (section 2.6.7) which, in the medium term, aims ‘to provide an on-site supply of 50-60 lcd of clean water’ per capita per day.

The supply of low water qual-ity poses a serious health hazard to residents of Limpopo. Coupled with the shortage of water in some of areas, it implies that water is either not suitable or available for domestic use, for the health of patients in hospitals and learners in schools, and for other citizens in both public and private industries, consumption of water is adversely affected.

The question remains: is this water crisis due to neglect or in-competence on the part of water services authorities?

Before municipalities blame external factors for water short-ages, they should ensure that their houses are clean. First, have they appointed qualified staff with the requisite technical and water management skills? Secondly, are water treatment plants regu-larly and adequately maintained?

Third, is there an effective wa-ter quality management system

which is monitored and evaluated regularly? Fourth, are staff mem-bers supplied with the necessary tools of trade?

Fifth, is there adequate turn-around time for resolving tech-nical problems? Sixth, are there effective communication and accountability systems?

Water shortages have become one motive behind community protests against government.

At times these become violent, blocking and damaging infra-structure, including roads and water tankers. Protesters usually disrupt the services of others, thereby inconveniencing other community members.

This is often a result of inef-fective communication between municipalities and community members. Often promises are made that cannot be realised within the agreed time-frames, which make communities lose trust in the governance system and local ward councillors. The latter do not have authority over the provision of water services, yet become victims of the angry residents. A typical example is a house of a councillor which was recently burnt down by angry residents in the Modimolle area of Limpopo.

It remains to be seen whether several government interventions will yield the desired results in Limpopo: solving the simmering water crisis.

The sooner the better, lest civil society lose faith in governance and the democratic government of the South Africa, which many citizens have sacrificed their lives to achieve.

This letter is a response to the article published last year (5 June 2015) titled Thovhele Masia questions legitimacy of Kurhuleni structure.

Firstly, Chief Masia needs to read history correctly and

understand it. The fact that a village is situated next to your area does not necessary means that it belongs to you. The vil-lages of Kuruleni, Nkuzana and Majosi are situated right at the doorstep of Chief Masia’s area of jurisdiction, but that does not mean that the land of Nkuzana, Majosi and Kuruleni belong to him, it belongs to the people who live there, who are outside Chief Masia’s area of jurisdiction. Just like Kuruleni, the people of Ma-

josi and Nkuzana will never give away their land to someone else.

History of the Transvaal region indicates that Kuruleni, Valdezia, Waterval, Elim, Shirley, Shiluba-na (Tzaneen) and Masana (Bush-buckridge) were Mission villages occupied by the Tsonga people, with ownership resting upon the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of South Africa (EPCSA). Of all the Mission villages, only Valdezia remains in the hands of EPCSA, the rest has been sold to the South African Government. Mission villages were never ruled by chiefs and headmen, their authority was vested in the hands of the EPCSA.

Finally, if Chief Masia thinks that some of the land situated next to his area belongs to him,

he must do the honourable thing: he must approach the Depart-ment of Rural Development and Land Reform and lodge a land claim on behalf of the Masia Traditional Authority. As Chief Masia may already know, South African Law does not allow for the removal of one group at the expense of another for the purpose of settling land disputes; where land is already occupied, financial compensa-tion is normally paid out to the claimants. The U/15 A-rugby team of Louis Trichardt High School received a welcome donation from the Coca Cola branch in Louis Trichardt in the form of water bottels. Photographed with the team last week during the handover are Ms Deborah Ngwenya, special events manager for Coke’s Louis Trichardt branch (front row, left), and the coaches Messrs Coenie de Lange (front row, right) and Theo Muller (middle row, left).

The Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators League local derby between the current log leaders of stream E, Makhitha Oscar Stars, and Makhitha Iyarunga was not played to the finish on Sunday at the Makhitha grounds. The score was still 0-0 when the match was stopped when Iyarunga’s players left the field.

The game was evenly contested and there were signs of rivalry from the start. Stars were only good at the far back. Their midfielders hesitated for too long and thus could not release balls on time for

their goal poachers. The Iyarunga lads initiated some promising

moves from the centre of the pitch but were denied a number of scoring opportunities by the rock-solid defence of Stars. The closest Stars came to scoring was when Leavy Matshavha tried his luck from outside the box. Elikana Nemakanga, the keeper of Iyarunga, made his presence felt when he palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

Stars continued to control proceedings, but their strikers let them down by shooting aimlessly

from close range. The half time score was still 0-0.

Iyarunga came back strongly in the second half, but Star´s keeper, Thanyani Netshipale, denied them a goal when he fisted Itani Dzahabuli´s volley away.

The match was stopped when a player of Iyarunga was allegedly as-saulted by an official of Stars. Iyarun-ga’s midfielder-cum-striker, Ashean Monyeloete, was also red-carded for rough play. The match continued, but an official of Iyarunga then went onto the pitch and surprised everyone by in-structing his players to leave the pitch.

The chairperson of the Safa Vhembe competition committee, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, said that they were going to summon Iyarunga to appear before a disciplinary hearing to face a charge of direct abandonment of a match.

Ndweleni Tshikwatamba of Iyarunga tries to protect the ball from interference by Mpho Lethole.

Stiff fines for transgressing SAFA Vhembe MMK League teamsTeams affiliated with the Safa Vhembe Foot-ball Association (MMK league) appeared be-fore the association’s disciplinary committee in Thohoyandou a fortnight ago to face several charges of misconduct.

The cases entail violent behaviour, failure to honour official matches, abandonment of match-es and assaults on match officials.

Lambani Giant Killers failed to honour their league match against Valdezia Depotivo. Killers arrived after the scheduled starting time. They received a fine of R3 000 and also forfeit the league points to Depotivo.

Marandzhe Hungry Lions appeared before the DC to answer to a charge of causing an indirect abandonment of their league match against Themba Sunrise. They were fined an amount of R5 000 and forfeit league points to their opponents.

Although the visitors from the Free State Prov-ince were the fi rst to blow the trumpet in the fi rst half, Lidoda Duvha did not stop playing their nor-mal entertaining football. They continued to press

hard, knocking on the opposition’s door constantly.Warriors were the fi rst to effect changes to their

starting 11. They replaced Ayanda Nzimande with Mfundo Nsele in the 18th minute. Two Leopards players, Lebohang Mabotja and Themba Mabuy-ango, were reprimanded with yellow cards within a short space of time. Mabotja found himself on the wrong side of the law by tackling Jerry Nkoana from behind in the 25th minute, while Mabuyango obstructed Lucas Ngwenya two minutes later.

Leopards conceded a silly goal in the 34th

minute. Warriors were awarded a corner that was taken by Gift Sithole. As if they were spectators, the defenders for Leopards watched how Ange Lebahi scored with a free header.

The home side replaced Bongani Manana with Khunadi Nkoana two minutes into the last half. Another Leopards’ player, Kgabo Mashiane, was warned with a card for dangerous play in the 55th minute. Realizing that time was fast running out for them, Leopards tried their luck by replacing Ndamulelo Mungadi and Themba Mabuyango with

Thembisani Nevhulamba and Thulani Shivambu respectively in the 67th minute.

Lidoda duvha found the equalizer two minutes before the end of the regulation time. Khunadi Nkoana hooked in the ball, following a neat pass from Lebohang Mabotja. An optional fi ve minutes referee’s time were added at the end of the regu-lation time. Black Leopards were awarded a free kick in the third minute of the referee’s optional time. Thulani Shivambu headed home to bring the fi nal score to 2-1.
