Mercurius Motors Two pupils allegedly forced to drink their own urine A moment of stupidity A Vhembe teacher says that a moment of stupidity seems to have undone her 31 years of selfless service and her clear record. “I do not know what happened, and I wish I could undo what I had done,” said Ms Thivh- onali Matshidze (60), who teaches at Vondwe Primary School. She is about to go on pension and the last thing she wanted was to tarnish her name with the Department of Education. Matshidze, a Grade 3 teacher, is alleged to have forced two pupils to drink their own urine, after refusing to let them go to the toilet. Out of desperation, the boys used their squeeze bottles to urinate in and, as punishment, they were forced to drink their urine. The nasty incident is believed to have taken place two weeks ago, but was kept under wraps as the boys were given strict instructions not to tell anybody and threatened with more punishment if they told any person. The incident, which has shocked the commu- nity and traumatised the boys, only came to light last week when the parents were tipped off by whistle blowers. Even the principal of the school was not informed about the incident, until he received complaints from the parents. He acted swiftly and summoned stakeholders in the com- munity such as the civic, the school governing body, the ANC and parents to a meeting where the matter was discussed. The meeting came about as community members threatened to barricade the entrance to the school, demanding the expulsion of the teacher. A meeting on Monday, which lasted several hours, was held at the school where it was decided that a task team be appointed to deal with the matter. The task team recommended that, as per normal procedure, a letter be written to the Department of Education, asking them to suspend the teacher with immediate effect. Even after the meeting, agitated parents could not hide their displeasure at how the whole issue had been handled. “This matter has not been handled properly. Firstly, we were not notified about the incident and were made to know about it from the streets, while it happened at school in full view of other people. This is very shocking. I have never in my life heard of a person drinking urine,” said Ms Fulufhelo Matambela, one of the mothers. Matambela, who is the mother of Thaluso Ntham- beleni (8), said that, after learning of the incident, she questioned her son, who confirmed that it had taken place, and that was when she laid a complaint with the principal of the school. “My son is very traumatised by the incident. He now lacks concentration in class and has lost his self-esteem as other pupils mock him for having drunk his urine. I am very disappointed and shocked about how a teacher with so much experience could have done that to our children,” she said. Matambela further indicated that she met the teacher, who confirmed committing the offence and asked to be forgiven. “All we need is the strongest action by the department. She should be expelled from teaching, so as to teach her and others a lesson,” she said. Ms Munzhedzi Matidza, the mother of Thabelo Matidza (10), said she was greatly saddened by what had happened to her son. “If my son had done something wrong, she should have punished him the normal way and not have made him drink urine. This is uncalled for, and as parents we do not want to see her at this school as she is not fit to be in front of a class.” The chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Joseph Mulaisi, said parents were very angry. “We entrust our children to the teachers and we regard them as parents to these kids in our absence. We are appalled by the whole incident,” he said. Matshidze, however, admitted her error. “I cannot even explain what was happening in me. I think it is the devil who was in me. I have been a teacher for more than 30 years, and I always taught my pupils hygiene, but I ended up making them drink urine. I am so sorry. What I did was totally wrong and I am prepared to face any penalty,” she said. She indicated that she could ask forgiveness the traditional way by compensating the families to show her remorsefulness. The spokesperson for the Department of Education, Mr Paena Galane, expressed shock on learning about the incident. “We will make every effort to determine the truth about the matter. If indeed it happened, the normal disciplinary processes will follow,” he said. He further indicated that the department did not condone or promote a situation whereby pupils were subjected to such inhuman treatment. Coach Papic now at Polokwane CityThe former coach of Black Leopards and Chippa United, Mr Kostadin Papic, was appointed the new coach of Polokwane City last Monday. Papic left Black Leopards for Chippa United at the end of last season after guiding the Thohoyandou outfit for one season. He parted ways with the Cape Town side last week. According to him, what prompted him to tender his resignation from Chippa United’s hot seat, with immediate effect, was internal politics of the club. According to him, he entered into a one season contract with Polokwane City. Papic replaces Mr Boebie Solomons, who was fired after his side lost 0-3 to Orlando Pirates at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane two weeks ago.

Leaders committed to efficient service

Youth camp grooms region’s leaders

“What about our RDP toilets, councillor?”The Musina Local Munici-pality has reiterated its com-mitment to implement an effective and efficient public service.

This was demonstrated when services were brought closer to the people during a mayoral imbizo at the Klopper Stadium during the weekend.

The imbizo forms part of the consultative process to make sure that community members are playing their roles in the de-cision-making processes of the municipality. The well-attended

meeting was targeted at ward committees, traditional leaders, all community stakeholders and the general public of Musina.

Led by Musina Mayor Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, govern-ment and municipal officials provided services for the local communities who usually travel to town to access those services. Ramoyada said it is important to restore the dignity of all South Africans after 20 years of democracy. “Everyone has the right to access government ser-vices, despite their geographical

location. Community members should report if government and municipal officials are not treat-ing them with dignity. That is why we encourage employees to have identification cards, so that community members are able to identify them. Our wealth is our people and that is why we make sure that they all enjoy the fruits of our freedom,” she added.

Ramoyada said it was import-ant for residents to attend imbi-zos and IDP meetings. She said the municipality always includ-ed its stakeholders when taking

decisions to ensure a smooth link between planning and delivery through a detailed and concrete project de-sign process. She re-sponded to the inputs made by stakeholders and residents. “The issues that we cannot respond to now will be forwarded to the relevant departments and stakeholders.”

Government depart-ments and stakehold-ers that were there to render services includ-ed the Musina Munic-ipality, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), South African Social Security Agen-cy (SASSA), Health and Social Devel-opment and African Bank.

The mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, addresses community members during the mayoral imbizo at the Klopper Stadium.

The province’s young leaders were being groomed the past week at the Schoemansdal Environmental Education Centre outside Makhado (Louis Trichardt). The young leaders were the guests of the Department of Social De-velopment during a five-day camp, which will end this afternoon.

On Monday, 40 young people between the ages of 19 and 23, specifically from disadvantaged communities, arrived from all five districts in the province to attend the camp.

The programme was filled with adventurous activities and educational sessions. The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), LoveLife, the SA Youth Council, the SA Association for Youth Clubs and the Central Drug Authority were among the entities providing training and educating young people.

Speaking during the official opening cere-mony on Tuesday, the MEC for Social De-velopment, Ms Happy Joyce Mashamba, said the youth camp pro-gramme was an initia-tive of the Minister of Social Development. It is aimed at mobilising and educating young people. “These camps

also have in mind to give the youth a golden opportunity to share ideas and experiences across cultural lines, to build a non-racial and non-sexist society,” she said.

She added that this coming December the prov-ince plans on sending 100 young people to the national youth camp in the Western Cape to ensure continuous engagement among all young people in the country. “We have witnessed the steady decay in moral standards in our communities as well as the increase in societal ills such as substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, school drop-outs, and violent attacks,” she added. MEC Mashamba be-lieves that these social ills should be addressed at grass-roots level.

Two disabled residents from Madombidzha are up in arms against the Makhado munic-ipality’s Ward 23 councillor, Selinah Mamatsiari, who they claim overlooked them when allocating RDP toilets.

“We have been on the wait-ing list since 2007 and she has snubbed us,” said Jackson Mavhandu and Edward Mulogo. Mavhandu said that he had regis-tered for an RDP toilet all along and was shocked and surprised after hearing that their toilets had been given to other community members at the same village.

He accused the councillor of snubbing eligible people like him. “I know of many disabled people in the area who have been denied (RDP toilets) while friends and relatives benefited,” he said.

Jackson Mavhandu said that they had a record of people who had been allocated houses “just because they are close to the

ward councillor”. He says he was shocked that people came to them at night and canvassed for their votes and “promised us a better life, while they have done absolutely nothing to ease our suffering.” Mavhandu said that he was tired of empty promises made by the municipality and the councillor and expect them to come up with some good news.

Mulogo, who is also disabled, expressed his anger towards the current ruling party, saying that they had promised him an RDP toilet, but they still hadn’t deliv-ered on their promise.

“What gets to me the most is the fact that our former and current local councillor know about our situation, but they have not done anything about it,” said Mulogo. He said he thought he was being discriminated against because of his disability.

The ward councillor, Selinah Mamatsiari, said that some of the needy people had not yet

received RDP toilets and houses because of a lack of knowledge of how the system works. “We had many people from the same village who qualified to get a house and RDP toilets; we added them to our beneficiary priority list,” she explained.

“As we are working for the people, we are trying to make sure everybody gets a better house and RDP toilets. That’s why we are busy building 100 RDP toilets at Tshikwani,” said Mamatsiari. She denied allegations that she did not get involved. She said that she had followed all the necessary procedures.

Cllr Mamatsiari said that she didn’t know about the two resi-dents’ needing toilets. She claims that even the ward committee members had not informed her about the two disabled men. Mamatsiari said she would pur-sue the matter and visit the Mavhandu and Mulogo families.

Absalom was born to be a bodybuilderThe multi-award winning bodybuilder Absolom Mfumadi (35) ascribes his success and achieve-ments to hard work and striving for the best in a career that demands more discipline and determination.

As a youngster growing up in a dusty Muduluni village, Mfumadi would get comments from his peers that he had strong muscles. He also was fas-cinated by hero characters with big muscles, such as Mr T and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Today, Mfumadi has pursued his love of body-building and he is happy about his journey.

“The thrill of picking up heavy weights and continuously working towards shaping the body by living a disciplined, healthy lifestyle leads me to become competitive and to excel in becoming number one in my category,” he says. Mfumadi’s weight category is 85kg.

He says that bodybuilding is a lifestyle that re-quires commitment and staying away from alcohol and other toxic substances. He agrees that body-building is a tough sport and adds that it requires discipline to continue training hard and always perfecting the body. The diet on its own is chal-lenging as he always has to stick to healthy food and stay away from junk and other tasteful food.

“It’s not easy having to resist good food,” he says. “But because I know what I have to achieve as a bodybuilder, I never get to be distracted from my goals. The life of a bodybuilder is costly and demands a lot of fi nancial support, which is always a challenge.”

Mfumadi sometimes visits school to give moti-vational talks, where he touches on the importance of discipline and encourages students to remain focused and not be interrupted from their academic commitments. He decries the national Department of Sport’s lack of support for body building.

“They shun us when we need sponsorship and other kinds of support,” he expresses his disap-pointment. “If the government could look at the benefi t of supporting bodybuilding as opposed to the negative perception around it, they will realise

Absalom was born to be a bodybuilderthe value in investing in bodybuilding as a sport.”

He says that there is a wider audience for body-building. Children love and aspire to muscling up. “It will be better to inspire them at young age, coach them and steer their passion in the right direction,” he says. “Children need to be given bodybuilding as an option and not only be restricted to soccer, because bodybuilding can be done parallel to any career and studies, just like in my situation where I recently received an honours degree in marketing.”

Sometimes this fi eld of sport is associated with arrogance, bullying and negative pride - which is all a bad mentality. Mfumadi agrees the sport is also associated with heavy use of steroids. “That is the perception I am trying to change,” he says. “Not all bodybuilders use steroids; just like not all cyclists use illegal substances.” At the moment, Mfumadi is inviting possible sponsors who wish to drive their brand by making him brand ambassador in return of fi nancial support to as-sist him in realising his dream to continue being the best and competing in the world champion-ships. “Their brand will receive further mileage as I am always being invited to various public platforms,” he says.

Mfumadi is currently based in Johannesburg, where he works for a telecommunications company as WASP business consultant.

The quest for morality

PlainTruth

I will spend a couple of weeks reflecting on a woman of noble character, one required to spear-head the campaign to save her own marriage and those of fellow countrymen and -women.

Proverbs 31 talks about such a highly prized woman who is a blessing to her family and the rest of society. In this article, I would like to focus mainly on pointing out that such a woman should be adorned with inner beauty.

Beauty is something that every woman aspires to have. No wonder women spend so much time doing shopping for the latest clothes in the fashion market. They spend enough time visiting beauticians and doing make-up. I have seen a number of female drivers who will be working on their make-up at every stop. They do hairstyles and change them two or more times in a month.

We should also acknowledge in the same breath that men are attracted to beauty, especially outer beauty; hence the ‘yellow-bone’ phenomenon is driving men crazy. There is a growing number of men who are deserting their wives for ‘yellowbones’, thereby increasing the high levels of infidelity or divorce.

If we are to save our marriages,

we have to include in our campaign the need to focus on the inner beauty.

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewellery or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” (1 Peter 3:3-4). Inner beauty is differentiated from outer beauty by focusing on the beauty of the inner person, one’s soul and character. Inner beauty speaks to who you are on the inside. It is unfading beauty that cannot be taken away.

The cutting edge of one’s inner beauty is a Christ-like lifestyle. It defines your inner beauty. It is a life-style driven by the Spirit of God and wanting to please God in everything you say and do. You display the godly character in all areas of life, including marriage, family, work and your community engagement. A woman of noble character, one adorned by inner beauty, is what is needed to change the world.

The next article will focus on “striving towards inner beauty as an antidote to divorce”.

Waterval Sanco chairperson Mr Andy Munyai points at the leaking drain.

Leaking sewage frustrates residents

No bail for suspects in gogo Sebyene murder case

Two leaking sewerage connec-tions in Waterval Section B have caused a lot of unhappi-ness over the past two months and the Vhembe District Mu-nicipality is accused of not attending to the community’s problems.

The local Sanco branch ac-cused the municipal officials of laziness, while angry residents fear that the raw sewage poses a health danger. The sewage spills over onto a small piece of local ground where children often play. Residents who stay close to the area also complained about the unbearable smell.

Member of the local Sanco branch Mr Benny Maluleke said that they had reported the problem several times. “We are fed up; the situation is dire,” said Mr Maluleke.

During a meeting held in July, residents resolved to write a letter to the Makhado municipality, pleading that services be ren-dered. Residents also complained that the water crisis in the area

was spiralling out of control, since most people make illegal connections, allegedly with the assistance of officials from Water Affairs.

The chairperson of the lo-cal Sanco branch, Mr Andy Munyai, said they had reported their problems several times to the Waterval regional office of the Makhado municipality. He said that the response was that “the issue of sewage and roads will be attended to by the office, depending on the availability of resources.”

“Our community members should record the names of the municipal officials whom they have reported their cases to. This will help us to hold those people accountable. I think it is time we name and shame those lazy officials,” he said.

Limpopo Mirror attempted to seek comment from the Makhado municipality and to find out what the proper channels were to use to ensure that such urgent problems were addressed swiftly. The mu-

nicipal spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, said that all the sanitary problems should be reported at the district municipality’s offices, since the local municipality did not have jurisdiction over those issues.

The spokesperson for the Vhembe district municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, initially told Limpopo Mirror that he was not aware of the sewage problem. On Tuesday, however, he said that the municipal technicians were fixing the problem. “We always try to make sure that we are receiving all the reports about sewage (leakages). This is an emergency. The sewage problem should not even take a day before it is attended to,” he said.

Mr Ralushai said that illegal connections were a huge chal-lenge. “We are trying to eradicate the problem of illegal connec-tions, but if there are officials who are assisting with illegal connections, the municipality will strive to investigate them,” he said.

Three suspects accused of the rape and murder of a local gogo were denied bail in the Tshitale Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday.

Happy Mohale (24), Stanley Zwidofhela Mug-wena (27) and Thomas Serepa (29) are accused of the rape and murder of gogo Mojaji Sebyene (83) at Sereni last month.

After the session in court, community rep-resentative Lesley Rik-hotso said the scourge of murder and rape of elderly in Vhembe had reached boiling point. Everyone must stand up and fight that all mur-derers be removed from the community.

“If something is not done now, we are all going to perish as a re-sult of murder. We will

never rest until we win this war against these cruel people, who live on human blood.” He added that he was happy that the suspects had been denied bail. Ms Tshifhiwa Sebyene, granddaughter of the murdered gogo, said that she was opposing bail, to

make the region a safer place. “We need the justice system to

make sure that the three stay in cus-tody, so that the justice system can take its course.”

The three will appear in court again on 29 October.

R18 million street project for Tshikota

Ndlovu dominates mathematics awards

The mayor of Makhado Munic-ipality, Cllr David Mutavhat-sindi, officially launched an R18 million street rehabilita-tion project in Tshikota two weeks ago.

When addressing the guests, Mutavhatsindi said the munic-ipality was a service-delivery arm of the government and its aim was to render sustainable services to its inhabitants. “We have a responsibility to provide roads of good standing in our municipality,” he said.

The mayor said that the project was aimed at the rehabilitation and maintenance of the roads,

as well as creating employment for local residents. He added that the project had already been approved and that the contractors and other workers had already been appointed.

Mutavhatsindi said the street projects were a major boost to the economic development of the municipality. “Apart from the reduction of air pollution and the improvement of vehicle lifespan, the project will form a link in the transport network, resulting in easier accessibility of services in our municipality. Our economic development will obviously be a benefi ciary of the project.”

“Service delivery is about delivering basic services such as water, electricity, quality housing, roads and other basic needs to the immediate com-munities. We have to make sure that our municipalities are fully and adequately staffed in order to provide excellent service. We can achieve more with the limited infrastructure at our disposal if we work together with a common goal of defeating unemployment and poverty,” Mutavhatsindi said. A total of 30 community members from Tshikota are set to benefi t from the street reha-bilitation project.

Khanimamba Ndlovu of EPP Minga dominated the maths ex-cellence awards held at Then-gwe Secondary School last Saturday.

Ndlovu, who is in matric at EPP Minga, was the overall winner of the one-day compe-tition, followed by Innocent Chauke, also from EPP Minga, while Ndivho Ndadza of Mbilwi Secondary School finished in third position.

Ndlovu won the sequence and series section and finished in second position in the differential calculus section. Rabelani Muk-wevho of Lwamondo Secondary fi nished second in the sequence and series section and Grace Kaheru of Mbilwi finished in third position.

Uatshila Dangale of St Augus-tine won the section for differen-tial calculus with Shudu Ramano of Thengwe Secondary in third position. The section for fi nancial maths was won by Raymond Nelwamondo of Tshivhase, fol-lowed by Rabelani Mukwevho of Lwamondo and Shudu Ramano of Thengwe. Innocent Chauke of EPP Minga took position one in the Mathematical Modeling section, followed by Raymond Nelwamondo of Tshivhase and Khetha Sigudu of Thengwe who took second and third position respectively. Ompha Nemalili won the probability section.

The competition, which started last year, was initiated by Mr Mashudu Marubini of Then-gwe High School, currently the

best mathematics teacher in the country.

In this programme, top mathe-matics pupils from 21 secondary schools from Vhembe received lessons free of charge and they then wrote tests in different cat-egories of mathematics.

The programme is aimed at motivating top maths pupils, so that they can pass the sub-ject with fl ying colours in their final exams. The competition was sponsored by Dr Mampha-ga, Dr Managa, Dr Ramaru, NR Mamidze (businessman), Thengwe principal Nkhangweni Nemudzivhadi, Thengwe former student Musiiwa Nyadzani, Mu-tale mayor Sarah Rammbuda and the deputy principal of Thengwe, Mrs Mercy Madanda.

Photographed during the event are, from left to right, Mashudu Marubini (competition organizer), Cllr Thinawanga Pandelani, Rufus Maphula (Learners Channel), Mashudu Mamidze (sponsor), Innocent Chauke (2nd), Khanimamba Ndlovu (1st), Ndivho Ndadza (third), Mr Nkhangweni Nemudzivhadi (principal of Thengwe) and Mr Steven Muthige, mathematics HOD in Limpopo.

Rotondwa wins the hearts of the judges

A representative of Open Doors will visit the Baptist Church in Makhado on Sunday, 14 September at 10:00.

Everyone is welcome to come and listen to the work being done among the persecuted chucrh of Christ.

For more information contact 079 5168303.

A 20-year-old woman from Makhado town, Rotondwa Musitha, won the hearts of the judges during the Miss Commonwealth South Africa 2014/15 pageant.

The pageant’s grand fi nale took place on 29 August at Gold Reef City’s Lyric Theatre in Jo-hannesburg.

Rotondwa was announced the second princess for Miss Commonwealth South Africa. She was further named the winner of Miss Culture Com-monwealth 2015. “This award went to the fi nalist that showed the most pride in their culture at the pre-judging interview on 27 August,” she said.

The Boksburg-based Ngawethu Ka-Siphiwo won the title of Miss Commonwealth South Africa 2014/15, while Laverne Asante from Midrand in Johannesburg was named fi rst princess.

Rotondwa’s story of achievement came after she had been selected as part of the 20 fi nalists in her category for the Miss Commonwealth South Africa title. She made sure that she worked harder in preparation for the grand fi nale, so that she could get good results.

“I feel blessed and, at the same time, honoured to have made it this far; it is all by the grace of God,” she said. “For me it doesn’t end here. I am yet to enter more pageants. I am still going to continue

being an ambassador for change and culture within society.”

Rotondwa confessed that she had learnt a lot from the pageant and that she believed this was only the beginning of even greater things to come. As a princess, she received vouchers from Sorbet and Jenni Gault and a gift. The winner, Ms Ka-Siphiwo, won a trip to London.

“I would also like to extend my deepest thanks to all the people who voted for me via SMS and my sponsors, who are Masana Social and Skills Development, Unarine Boutique and Coffee Bar, and Maseakhole Constructability and Projects,” she beamed.

Rotondwa believes that South Africa is a country rich in opportunities for beauty queens, so that they, in turn, can assist the less fortunate by raising funds on their behalf.

The 44 fi nalists in three different categories managed to raise at least R228 000 for charity during the event.

In the picture are (from left to right) Mrs Humbelani Khuswane, Ms Dowelani Mukatuni, Ms Rotondwa Musitha, Mrs Mumsy Musitha (Rotondwa’s mother) and Miss Dineo Rumani.

R169 million mall for Malamulele areaThe community of Malam-ulele in Limpopo Province has received a boost with the construction of a shopping mall that will yield 600 per-manent jobs.

A 14 000 m2 site was handed over by Thulamela municipal-ity to the Masingita Group of Companies on Friday, led by well-known property mogul Mike Nkuna. The construction

of the mall, known as Malam-ulele Crossing, will cost about R169-million.

Nkuna said construction would start immediately. “I have built several malls around the country, but I will always relish creating jobs for my peo-ple of Malamulele.” He added that during the construction phase, the project will provide about 1 100 jobs. “Because I am

from this area, I feel happy to change the lives of my people,” he said.

Cllr Shady Maluleke said that the municipality appreciated and supported the Masingita Group of Companies with the new venture. “This new mall will help government address the challenges of inequality, unemployment and poverty,” said Maluleke.

Thulamela councillor Shady Maluleke and Mr Ricci Davidoff turn the sod during the ceremony to hand over land for development of a mall on Friday.

First matric danceFor the first time in the history of Raluvhimba Secondary School, the matrics will have a matric dance next month, thanks to the generosity of Moses Malada through his foundation, the Rev MJ Malada Foundation.

The matric dance for 29 pupils, 18 girls and 11 boys, was organized by two caring women, Ms Tshifhiwa Malada and her friend, Tendani Malada. It will be held on 18 October at the school yard in Mokobde, outside Thohoyandou. The two ladies say they decided to organize the matric dance, dubbed “Dream Big”, as another way of motivating and encouraging the pupils to take their education seriously. “After learning that this school had never had a matric dance during its 34 years of existence, because of the poor background of their families, we felt that we should do something to motivate them. We approached Moses Malada, who donated shoes and clothes for the 11 boys. From there we started lobbying donations for the attire of the 18 girls from different people through the social net-work,” says Malada. “To our surprise, the response was very good. We collected dresses and shoes from around Limpopo and Gauteng. Some ladies even donated their wedding dresses.” Former Miss Makhado, Prudence Mabasa, now a Capricorn FM presenter, is one of the people who donated a dress - the one she was wearing when she was crowned.

Vhulenda Baloyi, a student leader at the school, says: “The matric dance is encouraging us to study harder. Even the Grade 11s are doing their best to be in matric next year, so that they can also benefit from this project,” says Baloyi.

The principal, Mr Mutshinyalo Maphiri, is very excited by the project. “This is great. I feel honored. Our pupils are more inspired,” says Maphiri who joined the school two years ago.

Tshifhiwa Malada( far left) and Tendani Ramawa ( far right) photographed with matric pupils from Raluvhimba with the clothes they will wear at their first ever matric dance.

The chairperson of Tshathongwe Communal Property Association, Attorney Peter Makananisa, resigned as chairperson of the association on 1 September. Makananisa said that he wanted to focus on his professional activities.

Naphy M busy with new albumNephtally Manenzhe, popularly known as Naphy M, made a suc-cessful break into the music indus-try with his debut gospel album, titled Ri Tshi Funana, which was released in the middle of last year.

Even though that album was a low-budget project, it became so popular it proved to be a people’s favourite in taxi ranks, buses and at homes around Vhembe and be-yond. True enough, it showed that a lack of funds would never hinder strong-willed artists from realising their dreams of becoming recorded artists. The aIbum’s popularity earned Naphy M a nomination into the Tshivenda Music Awards (2013) with the song Ri Tshi Funana. “To say that I love music is an under-statement,” Naphy M says. “How can we live, or even exist, without music? Music encapsulates life, and life is encapsulated in music.” He says that the Tshima nom-ination spurred him on, and he released a follow-up to his fi rst album, titled Murena A Nga Si Tende. This album comprises 12 songs, such as Sathane, Woza Moya, Savha-tha , Tauya ,

Thusa, Ngino Jesu and Vhuyani. On this album, Sathane is a standout and is so well sung, in isiZulu. “I enjoyed the rare opportunity, or should I say privilege, of working with the highly talented Vho-Mercy Rambevha on Murena A Nga Si Tende,” he says.

Most of Naphy M’s are songs popularised by church members in the UAAC, or by artists who entered the music industry before him. It seems that he had taken inspiration from the musicians whom he grew up listening to, and fundamentally from the church.

This artist is working on a new album, provisionally titled Ro Ten-delana, due later this year. “Even though I am currently working on my new album and investing a lot of fi nance into the project, I sometimes feel discouraged when I think of

people who pirate our work to sell it for R10 in the street,” he says. “In Thohoyandou, the situation has gotten out of hand. You won’t fi nd a South African selling fake CDs. They are all foreign-ers and when you approach

them, they gang up and beat you terribly!”

Like wine that matures with time, the music of Muebi and Renwedzi is be-coming better and continues to inspire all the people who appreciate their origin, culture and heritage.

The duo, who were born and bred at Duthuni, have just re-leased their second album, Ndi musidzana wa tsilu. Muebi and Ranwedzi shot to stardom when they released their fi rst album, Ndi Muvenda, in 2010.

Taking into con-sideration that September is heritage month, the timing of the new re-lease is right as the album cele-brates the herit-age of Africans, especially the V h a v e n d a -spea king peo-ple. The album h a s a l r e a d y started receiv-ing airplay on local and region-al radio stations,

including SABC’s Phalaphala FM. Last year, the group was nominated for the Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima) and they hope to scoop up the prestigious award this year. The two artists, who came together three years ago, have many things in common. Owen Muebi is a mo-tivational speaker, multiple-award-win-ning journalist and founder-member

of the Vhembe Journalist Forum. He is also a comedian, author, poet and radio personality who broad-

casts Ndevhetsini (current

matters) on Phalaphala FM. n the other hand, Elekanyani Ranwedzi is a comedi-an, author, poet, songwriter and producer. Last year, he was nominated in the Best Venda Traditional Praise Singer category of the Tshivenda Music Awards.

Last week, Muebi and Ranwedzi were on tour promoting Ndi musidzana wa tsilu at shopping malls and radio sta-tions around Vhembe. Their manager, Tshilidzi Mathidi, said the response they

received from their fans was over-whelming. “People like this album and it has already started making

waves locally. We made sure it would be a traditional

offering to preserve our culture. It is

surely going to sell well and I have

no doubt that it will scoop up

several awards,” he said. Tracks to listen

to on the album include Matudzi matula, Mirero ya Vhavenda, Tshima, Ndi musidzana wa tsilu,

Mbingano and Pfunzo.For bookings, public

performance and CD sales, Muebi and Ranwedzi can be contacted on 072 074 0053.

Many people across the country joined the Casual Day festivities, not even knowing what they mean. This is a different story altogether at Awelani Christian School at Shayandima, where almost all of the 500 pupils bought articles such as T-shirts, caps, stickers and other items in support of the day. They also had a fulfilling day at school. "We have told the children about the importance of buying these items. This is for a good cause as the money raised will go towards assisting the less privileged," said Mr Thifhelimbilu Rasikhanya, principal of the school.

Nkosinathi Masia of Juventus (front) and Settler Mkhabela of Young Diplomats chase the high ball.

Valdezia Juventus secured a place in the final of the Com-rade Mdaka Soccer Challenge by beating Bungeni Young Diplomats 4-1 in their semifi-nal at the Bokisi grounds on Saturday.

The first half was equally con-tested, with both sides creating and missing scoring chances. Juventus were the first to make amends and ultimately found the net in the 19th minute. Matome Mabobo beat the keeper with a close-range ground cutter, following a corner kick that was taken by Pat-rick Maswanganyi.

Mr Jelly Chabani, the promising diminutive referee, warned Nkos-inathi Masia of Juventus with a card for handling the ball intentionally in the 24th minute.

Young Diplomats fought back nine min-utes before the end of the first half. Their soli-tary goal was an honour to their central midfield-er, Miehleketo Mathon-si. Mathonsi went loose after beating the offside trap and sent the keeper the wrong way to bring the half-time score to 1-1.

Juventus replaced t h e i r g o a l s c o r e r , Matome Mabobo, with Daniel Mathebula early

in the last half. They took the lead again in the 54th minute. Ntsako Mathebula, who scored a brace in the game, was on target with a long-range volley. Juventus did not stop fighting, despite the fact that they were reduced to 10 men after scoring the goal. Their first goal scorer, Matome Mabobo, was given his marching orders for pulling out his shirt while cel-ebrating his team’s second goal.

Young Diplomats faced a similar situation when their striker, Kanukani Magoro, saw

red for a late tackle on Lucky Mathonsi. Ntsako Mathebula completed his brace in the 69th minute after a clearing error. Miehleketo Mathonsi of Juventus was reprimanded with a card for wasting time.

He held on to the ball for far too long before throwing it back into the field of play after his side was awarded a throw-in.

Juventus put matters beyond doubt when Wanela “ Bongo” Furumela scored after a scramble within the box later in the game.

Juventus through to Cde Mdaka final

Tshakhuma RO win Wafawafa tournamentAlthough Tshakhuma RO United failed to book a place in the final of the Amos Charity Shield Soccer Tournament, they have something to be proud of. They were crowned the champions of the Wa-fawafa Soccer Tournament at the Shayandima High School grounds last Saturday.

Three teams, Tshakhuma RO United, Tshedza FC and the hosts, Shayandima Silver Stars, took part in the one-day event.

Polokwane United, who were supposed to be part of the tour-nament, failed to honour the

invitation. Polokwane’s failure to show up forced the organizers to change the playing format from knock-out to round robin.

The opening match was be-tween Tshedza FC and Shayan-dima Silver Stars.

Stars could not absorb the pressure and Tshedza easily beat them 3-1.

In the next match, Tshakhu-ma RO United, or the “Guptas Family” as they are affection-ately called, battled it out with Shayandima Silver Stars. The score was 1-1 when the refer-ee blew the final whistle. The

winner was determined through penalty shoot-out. Tshakhuma RO United scored five from the penalty spot and Silver Stars converted four.

RO United met Tshedza in the final later in the afternoon. This one also ended in a 1-1 draw and the winner was determined through penalty shoot-out. Again RO United converted all their five chances while Tshedza scored four.

As it was a winner-takes-all tournament, Tshakhuma RO United were presented with a cash prize of R1 200.

Jomo Young Stars fought hard to earn a 1-0 victory over Muila FC in their semifinal of the Comrade Mdaka tourna-ment at the Bokisi grounds on Saturday.

Muila had nobody else to blame for the defeat but themselves. They squandered countless scoring opportunities throughout the game. Their cap-tain, Given Makwala, could not live up to the fans’ expectations as a scoring machine as he was tightly marked.

Realizing that life was diffi-cult for him as a strik-er, Makwala moved back and played as a midfielder, but that did not assist his team as the opponents kept a watchful eye on him at all times. The keeper of Young Stars, Lucky Maluleke, made his presence felt in the 19th minute. Maluleke did the unexpected by braving Briton Ma-chete’s close-range volley and palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

The game turned lukewarm for about 15 minutes as the teams were studying each other. Muila started to launch more attacks from the middle of the park soon afterwards. Thabang Makondo of

Young Stars was booked for a late tackle on Lotters Rambau three minutes before the half-time whistle.

The second half saw Muila commit more blunders. Their right winger, Quite Phathudi, caused an upset in the 50th minute. He unleashed aimlessly from inside the box instead of relaxing on the ball and picking the spot.

Both sides effected some changes to their starting lineups in the last half. Muila replaced Briton Machete and Sello Mo-

lautsi with Tshifhiwa Mphephu and Nicolas Maake respectively in the 59th minute.

Jomo Young Stars responded by introducing Themba Mabasa and Phanuel Mbungele for Giv-en Tafula and Ntsako Mabasa respectively.

Chambrey Masethe of Muila was also warned with a card for dangerous play on Evidence Masia in the 70th minute. Jo-mo’s all-important goal came in the 84th minute. Rudolph Mhlongo blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

WE ACCEPT TRADE INS FC KK in final of Amos TournamentThe defending champions, FC KK, secured a place in the final of the Amos Shield Soccer Tournament by beating Maweja Takers 3-1 in the semifinal at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds on Sunday.

This was a replay match after the two teams played to a goalless draw at the same venue two weeks ago. KK deserved to win from the onset, but the winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out as the scoreboard was still blank at the end of regulation time.

KK squandered three obvious chances in the opening minutes. Konanani Sibara caused an upset. He received a pre-cooked pass from his captain, Itani Ngange, and fumbled at the goal finish and ultimately lost possession. The overlapping defender, Londani Davhula, penetrated through the defence of Maweja and unleashed a volley from the edge of the box. The ball hit the side net, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans. That was a wake-up call to the players of Takers. They took the game to their opponents for the remaining part of the first half. They came close to scoring in the 39th minute when their captain, Khuliso Netshaulu, forced his way through the defence of KK and shot wide from just outside the box.

KK replaced Rendani Mudau and Percy Maba-sa with Mashudu Malusha and Shudu Nemavhu-lani in the 49th and 54th minute respectively. KK were denied what everybody thought was a clear penalty in the 67th minute. Dakalo Mashanzhe was brought down within the box but the refer-ee, Mr Calvin Nemavhola, awarded a free kick, implying that the incident had happened outside the box. KK did not lose their original fighting

spirit, despite the heartbreaking incident. Takers managed to convert only one of the five chances from the white spot, while KK scored three via Itani Ngane, Dakalo Mashanzhe and Zwido Mulaudzi.

FC KK will meet Tshakhuma Na Ndilani FC in the final next weekend at a venue still to be announced.

FC KK’s goal scorers were Itani Ngange (left), Zwido Mulaudzi and Dakalo Mashanzhe.

Khuliso Netshaulu of Maweja Takers (right) and Rendani Mavhungu of FC KK are focused on the ball.

PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION OF 2X500KV LINE FROM NZHELELE SUBSTATION TO CONNECT WITH POWER LINES COMING FROM TRIANGLE SUBSTATION ZIMBABWE IN THE MUSINA DISTRICT LIMPOPO PROVINCE DEA/EIA/0002224/2013

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT PROCESSProject Description

South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique entered into a strategic alliance to assist each other in ensuring continue and uninterrupted electricity supply within each of the countries. This entails infrastructure that will allow each of the countries to send or receive electricity,

as and when required, form each other. Eskom, as South Africa’s electricity producer, is in the process of developing the required infrastruc-ture that will allow this agreement to take effect. Eskom requires the construction of two 500kv power lines from the Nzelele Substation to

the Limpopo river. These two power lines will link up with power lines that originate at Triangle substation in Zimbabwe.Location

The study area for this proposed activity is within the Vhembe District Municipality region, within the Local municipality of Musina. The power lines will start at the Nzhelelel Sub Station (under construction), south east of the corner N1 and the R525, Tshipis road. The power lines will then need to move north towards the Limpopo river, where they will meet up with the Zimbabwe power lines, coming from Triangle

in central Zimbabwe. Areas East and West of the town of Musina is being studiedName of Applicant

Musina celebrates Arbor Day

Pastor challenges credibility of modern churches

Musina Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada (right) is assisted by Chief Whip Simon Madamalala (seated) and two learners to plant an indigenous tree at Beit Bridge Primary School in Musina. Also in the photo are Cllrs Fistos Mafela, Gift Phiri and Sewane Kaunda.

The Musina Local Municipality joined numerous South Africans in celebrating Arbor Week last week.

Arbor Week is a week in which individuals and groups are encour-aged to plant and care for trees. Through the subdirectorate of waste management, parks and recreation of the Musina Municipality, indigenous trees were planted at various schools around Musina.

The schools include Bonwa Udi Primary, Gateway Primary, St Martin De Pores Primary, Renaissance High, Nehemiah, Musina High, Messina Laerskool, Madimbo Primary, Dom-boni Primary, Rixile Primary and Beit Bridge.

Before planting indigenous trees at

Beit Bridge Primary School in Mu-sina, Mayor Mihloti Ramoyada said trees played a vital role in the health and well-being of the community. “Besides providing us with shelter, trees absorb harmful toxins in the atmosphere and release much-needed oxygen. Trees are a source of building material, they produce food and can be used as medicine.”

According to her, the occasion afforded all South Africans the op-portunity to be involved in greening their communities.

“It is therefore important for the public to join hands with us to pre-serve trees, because they have mul-tiple benefits for communities,” she added.

Pastor Chris Masinge challenges the credibility of modern churches.

An author, pastor, and full-time teacher challenges the credibility of modern churches through his book entitled A Church with a Human Face.

Pastor Chris Masinge (43) launched his book at the Ha-Tshavhani Bogisi worshipping centre last Saturday. Through his book, pastor Masinge wanted to highlight the burning issues surrounding pastors and their churches.

Masinge said that most churches were no longer serving the purpose of God and His kingdom but were established for the purpose of collecting money. “I’ve seen that most people currently hijack churches to make it their personal business and accumulate profits instead of teaching the word of God,” he said.

The part-time lecturer at the University of Preto-ria insisted that people were no longer worshipping

God, but certain individuals. With his book he hopes to inspire the public and restore the purpose of churches. “People need money, churches are about individuality, and God is not worshipped any more,” he remarked.

He said his book was meant to inspire believers from all corners of the globe to be careful when building churches. He believed that the church was not natural as perceived by many, but it had a supernatural role to play in shaping lives and advancing the Kingdom of God.

Pastor Chris is the founder and senior pastor of the Kingdom Family Worship centre. He is the father of three daughters. His book is also endorsed by Pastor Maanda Petrus Mamohoyi.

Pastor Mamuhoyi said the book revealed a spiritual disaster that had arrived without congregations’ noticing.

“It comes like a trumpet sound blown by the watchman to alert those inside the city to wake up and put their houses in order,” he said.

Suspects released

Reward for info

African rhumba king at festival

The case of six suspects who were arrested in connection with stolen laptop computers at Ongedagte Secondary School in Kuruleni earlier this year was struck off the Magistrate’s Court roll on Monday.

All suspects who were arrested in connection with the incident were released, pending further investigations after a brief appearance in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court. Only four laptops of the 20 stolen were recovered during the investigations.

The released suspects were arrested during the weekend and charged with housebreaking with intent to steal.

Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Muk-hola said the charges would be reinstated when the investigations revealed further supporting ev-idence. “The case was struck off the roll, pending further investigations,” he said.

It has been six months since a 56-year-old woman, Mrs Lena Matshidza from Dopeni in Nzhelele, was shot and killed in cold blood at the gate of her home. After several attempts and a huge investigation, the police have not yet apprehended any suspect.

The police have promised a reward to any mem-ber of the public who might have useful information that will help to put the alleged suspect behind bars.

The motive behind the incident is still unknown. Mrs Matshidza’s mysterious death, reminiscent of an execution, sparked massive fear in the village after the incident. According to police reports, she was allegedly shot three times whilst inside her vehicle.

“Our investigations are still continuing, but at this stage we have not yet apprehend any suspect. We are appealing to any member of the public who might have information leading to a conviction to contact us as they will also be rewarded R30 000,” said Siloam police spokesperson W/O Edward Tharaga.

African rhumba king Kanda Bon-go Man has not only confirmed his appearance to perform at the Phalaphala FM Royal Heritage Festival 2014 at the Royal Gar-dens-Nandoni tomorrow, but he also promised fireworks.

In what is certainly a coup for the organisers, the DRC-born music great, who spent a lot of his time in France, said he would bring a strong team of dancers. He will also sing songs from his forthcoming album.

He was already seen rehearsing in Thohoyandou and those able to sneak in liked what they saw.

The Phalaphala FM Royal Heritage Festival is preceded by King Toni Mpehphu’s Fun Walk today, with a choice of a 5, 10 or 15 kilometre walk as well as the royal traditional bare-knuckle fistfighting (Musan-gwe). “The bare-knuckle fights show-case the fearlessness of Vhavenda warriors,” goes a statement attributed to King Mphephu. According him, the

celebration is not just to acknowledge Heritage Day, but also the unity in celebrating it together as Vhavenda people, bringing the clans together and commemorating the legacy that “our forefathers have given to us.” The invitation has been extended to all Vhavenda Chiefs, other kingdoms in Limpopo and different stakeholders in local and national government.

“It is not only an occasion for the Vhavenda people but for others as well to learn and experience what the culture is all about,” said the project manager, Mr TW Mukwevho.

The celebrated Kanda Bongoman, who will be one of the drawcards at the festival, said his band was rehears-ing in Johannesburg. He said he was happy to perform in Thohoyandou before embarking on an international tour that will take him to England, Ethiopia and Belgium. “My song In the Morning is very popular in South Africa and obviously one of the hits I will play,” said Bongoman, who

boasts 14 successful albums.

Other artists billed to perform are : Oliver Mtukudzi, Mafikizo-lo, Ringo Madlingozi, Khuli Chana, DJ Fresh & Euphonik, MiCasa, Big Nuz, iFani, Naked DJ, DJ Sphe & Naves, Colbert Mukwevho, DJ Nipro, Mizo Phyll, DJ Soul scenic, Kanakana “Cook”, Benny May-engani, DJ Jonez, Taki & Rofhiwa, l Majo, Adziambei Band and Khakhati & Friends.

Magau FC were too strong for Tshiozwi Mates when they beat them 2-1 in the Spring tournament at Madombidzha on Sunday.

It was war in the true sense of the word. At first it was Mates who were threatening to find the net, but things changed as the game approached the halfway mark of the first stanza. Andries Masingi, the Mates' right flank, had his chance in the ninth min-ute after receiving a brilliant pass from Vusi Mamburu. He shot aimlessly from close range and the ball went wide.

Magau regrouped and took the game to their opponents. No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts by both sides.

Magau midfielder Rendani Madau tried his luck from outside the penalty area with a volley. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line in the 54th minute.

Magau continued to dominate after the goal, but they were not

lucky enough to increase the margin as their opponents were rock solid at the back. Mates strengthened their striking force by introducing Khathutshelo Tshinanga for Mashudu Ra-maligela in the 68th minute.

The keep-er of Mates, Ronewa Mu-vhali, denied Magau’s strik-ers numerous s u r e g o a l s . Tshepo Ranku o f M a g a u unleashed a vol ley f rom the edge of the box in the 79th minute. Muvhali made his presence felt when he stretched to the limit to pull off a brilliant save.

Tshepo Ranku beat the offside trap and blasted in a ground cutter from inside the box to make the final score 2-1.

Madombidzha Celtic proceed-ed to the next round of the Spring soccer tournament, when they beat Gogobole Home Defenders 2-0 at Madombidzha on Sunday.

Celtic showed no respect for their elder brothers and matched them pound for pound. Munonoka, Celtic’s top goal scor-er, could not display his normal impressive skills, as Lutendo Phad-ziri had marked him tightly. The referee, Mr Mendula Sadiki, issued his first yellow card to Aaron Thabelo Tharini of Defenders for rough play on Thabo Matu-ba. Defenders missed a golden opportunity when their dribbling wizard, Tshishonga Tshishonga, forced his way through from the far left corner but shot wide.

Cel t ic broke the deadlock when Isaac Mulaudzi finished off a header from Rudzani

Lisoga, making the half-time score 1-0 in favour of Celtic.

Defenders committed suicide by leaving the Celtic danger man, Percy Munonoka, unmarked most of the time. He was the thorn in the flesh of the oppo-

nents, collecting balls from be-hind and distributing some to the front runners, while at the same time playing as a striker. Defend-er Tshikosi Mashau scored an own goal to make the scoreline 2-0 late in the match.

Bethuel Netshifhefhe aims to win the Two Countries marathon which starts in Musina tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

Netshifhefhe is the favourite to win this annual event. "I don’t think it will be an easy race, be-cause I expect a large number of good runners on the day," he said earlier this week. "I have been training hard to prepare for the race," he added and said he did not want to let his supporters down.

Veteran runner Jane Mudau also commented that she was ready to win again. She mentioned that she had trained hard in order to win the gold medal this year.

Last year's winner, Nkosinathi Sibanda, should not be underestimated. This athlete is well pre-pared for the race and plans on defending his title and the course record he set last year. According to him, he cannot let his supporters from Zimba-bwe down, because "they know this race is for Zimbabweans".

According to the spokesperson for the Musina Municipality, Mr Wilson Dzebu, the purpose of the marathon is to promote long-distance running in the area. Dzebu appealed to the runners to be punctual at the registration point and said that several prizes were at stake. "We have polished our act and people can expect fireworks this year. We have managed to draw big names to this race, which will give it the stature it deserves," he said.

The mayor of the Musina Municipality, Cllr Mihloti Ramoada, will present the prizes after the race. The race will start at 05:00. The race is organised by the Soutpansberg Athletics Club and cash prizes totalling R73 000 will be awarded. The winner of the marathon will win R7 000 in the open races for men and women and the win-ners of the half-marathons will receive R3 000 each. The winners of the 10km races will receive R1 000 each.

A bright future forpromising athlete

Black Leopards must collect the maximum points against Garanku-wa United at the Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow afternoon in order to restore their pride.

Lidoda Duvha started the new sea-son on a sad note when they lost 0-1 to Lamontville Golden Arrows in front of their home crowd in their opening league match three weeks ago. Leop-ards collected their fi rst league point a fortnight ago when they played to

a 1-1 draw against Jomo Cosmos at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Thembisa.

According to the spokesperson of the club, Mr Berry Ramunenyiwa, they are expecting nothing less than a convincing victory. He indicated that they were fi elding an injury-free squad.

The team’s former captain, Mon-gezi Bobe, is likely to be in the starting line-up when one takes into account his level of performance at

training sessions. The Leopards’ strikers, Abbas Amidu and Siphamandla Sangweni, will give the United defence a run for their money if they are not well contained. Their defenders, Dunga Mun-ganga and Lebohang Mabotja (photo), are expected to keep their danger area clean throughout. Mr Ramunenyiwa reiterated the fact that tickets are available at Computicket, saying no tickets will be sold at the stadium.

FC Cape Town will host Lamontville Golden Arrows at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. Thanda Royal Zulu and Vasco da Gama will meet at the Umhlathuze Sports Complex in Richards Bay. African Warriors and Santos will lock horns at the Charles Mopedi Stadium in Phutaditshaba. Jomo Cosmos will fl y to Cape Town for their match against Milano United at the Philipi Stadium.

In one of the two matches that will be played this evening, Royal Eagles will entertain Maluti FET College at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Durban. Cape Town All Stars and Baroka FC will battle it out for league points at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. Sunday will see Highlandspark test their strength against Witbank Spurs at the Makhu-long Stadium in Thembisa.

Keen to compete and win national and later international competitions, Gift Nefolovhod-we (19) believes that success depends on goals one sets for oneself.

The pupil of Murunwa Pri-vate School in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) recently fi nished seventh in a senior half-marathon during the Mandela Day Marathon in Durban. His keen interest in athletics started with a mere fun run he entered fi ve years ago while he was still a pupil of Tshikwarani Primary School. After completing the run, he realised that running and cycling were his natural talents. Since then, he has entered various local races.

In 2010, he joined the Sout-pansberg Athletics Club. In 2012, he went on to win the Makoppa 30 km cycling challenge. This motivated him to continue training hard and to enter various local and national competitions. In April this year, he was among the top 200 athletes who completed the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town. It took him only three hours and 36 minutes to fi nish the 56 kilometres, which proved that this youngster took his talent seriously. Gift, who hails from Madom-bidzha village, has urged young people to focus on their goals in order

to succeed in life. “If only young people of my age can refrain from substance abuse and delinquen-cy, sports will ensure that we are succeeding in life and, at the same time, accomplishing and winning accolades,” he said. Despite his recent success in running and cycling, Gift spends his time tire-lessly focusing on his school work. “When am not at school, I spend most of my time training. I believe that sports will help me prepare for my future,” he added.

Gift acknowledged and thanked all the people who have spon-sored him throughout his athlet-ics career. “Most people have sponsored me fi nancially, morally and encouraged me to work hard, especially when I was in Durban recently. If it were not for people

who sponsored me, I don’t

think I would have

made it alone,” he said.
