Volunteers have a real impact in our community. They lead local boards, sports organizations and plan events. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together and make it a better place. Local activities bring people together to build a stronger community.

Through the Community Services Department (Community Development), we work alongside people in our community, build relationships with organizations and identify common concerns. Together we are creating opportunities for the community to learn new skills. This fall, the Community Services Department is proud to be hosting a workshop for our volunteer community, Best Practices for Successful Volunteer Engagement. This initial workshop will kick off a series of workshops we hope to offer which will look more closely at how we can attract, engage and retain volunteers. See page 8 for workshop information.

Clarington is A True Sport Community!True Sport is a national movement of communities and groups across Canada working to ensure a positive, meaningful and enriching experience for all who participate in sport. The True Sport Movement is based on the belief that good sport can help build lasting strengths in individuals, as well as healthy vibrant communities and a more socially connected Canada.

True Sport is founded on four core values: fairness, excellence, inclusion and fun. It is a movement powered by people like you … athletes, coaches, officials, organizers, parents, teachers and community leaders.

People who know that sport can transform lives and communities.

People who care about the positive values that sport embodies, like teamwork and commitment.

People who want to see sport in Canada live up to its full potential.

True Sport members believe that a True Sport Community has:

• A healthier, more active population • Less youth crime and gang involvement • Faster community integration of newcomers • Attraction of mobile knowledgeable workers and companies that hire them • Higher levels of social capital and trust

• Improved school enrolment, attendance and achievement• More inclusive communities• Improved workplace skills and productivity

The Council of the Municipality of Clarington has declared Clarington to be a True Sport Community and has endorsed the True Sport Principles for Communities!

At the heart of True Sport is a simple idea: good sport can make a great difference – a great difference in the lives of those who participate in it, and a great difference in the communities that support it.

From swimming to lacrosse, and boxing to discus, these individuals have had an impact on our sports community. They, along with some other worthy candidates, are all being inducted to the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame this Fall!

Join us Saturday October 24, 2015 as we celebrate the induction of:

Rob Campbell (Athlete)Rob began his career in 1972 as a boxer and won titles at the Provincial, National and International level. Rob’s career gained him the Ontario Provincial Championship for three straight years and also achieved a Canadian Amateur title.

Karen Hillis (Builder)Karen is the Head Coach with the Clarington Swim Club who has dedicated many decades to developing competitive swimmers in our community. Through testimonials received it is evident she has inspired many with her passion for swimming.

Kenny Johnston (Honourary)Kenny has been taking care of hockey and lacrosse players as a Trainer with both the Bowmanville Eagles and Clarington Green Gaels for over 35 years. He continues to be the Trainer for the Green Gaels, travelling in from his current home in Bobcaygeon for all practices & games.

James (Jim) Daniel Shaw (Athlete)Jim moved to Newcastle as a youngster. Jim was introduced to the “Hot Wheels” program at Variety Village, a program for wheel chair athletes. Jim, who competed with a disadvantage of Cerebral Palsy, moved into the sports of Javelin, Shot Put and Discus, where he excelled in all three. In 1996 at the Atlanta Paralympics, he won a bronze in Javelin, a gold in both shot put and discus while breaking the discus record. He also won gold in discus at the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney and took a silver in discus and a gold in shot put at the 2007 Rio Parapan Am Games.

2000 Clarington Green Gaels Junior B Lacrosse (Team)The beginning of the year 2000 was a tough one to read for any outsider. Many believed that this was a rebuilding year for the Gaels having had 12 rookies join the team. The Gaels finished the season with a 19-1 record losing only one game of the year with 3 seconds left in

overtime to a formidable Nepean Knights team. From that point on the Gaels never looked back finishing undefeated heading into the playoffs. In 2000, the Clarington Green Gaels Junior B Lacrosse Team won both the Ontario Cup and the Founder’s Cup.

Best Practices for Successful Volunteer Engagement

For the past ten years, the competition for both funds and volunteer resources has steadily increased. At the same time, volunteers have changed to both what they are interested in doing and what they are willing to do. Organizations are constantly concerned about ‘not having enough volunteers’ or ‘volunteers are just not staying.’ Sound familiar?

Non-profit organizations, sports, culture, faith and recreation groups need to ensure that the volunteers and/or staff who guide the work of the organization by engaging volunteer resources are updated and well trained. Learn about these changes and find ways to support volunteers that are so critically needed to run and support programs and services.

About the Instructor: Donna Lockhart is a workshop leader, consultant and partner in The RETHINK Group. Her mission is to help organizations “attract, support and expand” their volunteer resources. For over 30 years, she has partnered with hundreds of non-profit organizations to help develop volunteer engagement strategies; provide staff training or develop resources for staff or volunteers. Donna is a Certified Volunteer Resource Manager and has a Master’s Degree in Community Development & Recreation Planning from York University.

SHOWER B4 U SWIM The Community Services Department is continuing its “Shower B4 U Swim” campaign aimed at all swim lesson participants and pool/whirlpool/sauna users. We continue to look for everyone’s assistance and co-operation in complying with the Department of Health regulation pertaining to showering before entering a public pool/whirlpool.WHY SHOWER? Body fluids such as urine, sweat, feces and saliva can transmit bacteria, viruses and parasites into the water. Germs that can cause a Recreational Water Illness (RWI) are normally killed by chlorine. However, healthy swimming behaviours are needed to protect you and your child(ren) from RWIs and will help stop germs from getting in the pool in the first place. Please do your part by practicing good hygiene and “Shower B4 U Swim.”

Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300 metre swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75 metres each.

Red CrossSwim Kids

9

This level refines the front crawl (100 metre), back crawl (100 metre), elementary back stroke (50 metre) and breast stroke (25 metre) and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 min). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400 metre swim.

Red CrossSwim Kids

10

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100 metre, back crawl 100 metre, elementary back stroke 50 metre, breast stroke 50 metre and sidestroke 25 metre). Before you select a Physical Activity

To ensure you have a positive healthy experience, consult with your personal Physician for advice before increasing your physical activity if you answer yes to any of the following questions:

1. Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition and that you should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor?

2. Do you feel pain in your chest when you do physical activity?3. In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing physical activity?4. Do you lose balance because of dizziness or do you ever lose consciousness?5. Do you have a bone or joint problem that could be made worse by change in your physical

activity?6. Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs (for example, water pills) for your blood pressure or

Tired of the Stair Climbing? Looking for the best workout that will challenge your mind and body? Real Fitness Kickboxing is the answer.

Experience it for yourself –Real Fitness Kickboxing is an intense, fat burning, heart pumping, muscle toning cardio workout. It increases physical stamina, muscle strength, flexibility and coordination. It is a challenging, exciting and fun workout.

Kickboxing combines martial arts moves with cardio and boxing. It is fast paced, challenging and never boring. It is a workout that benefits your mind, body and spirit.

Our focus is on Real Fitness. Whether your ultimate goal is to be in the best shape of your life, or supplement your current plan, training in Real Fitness Kickboxing is the path to reaching YOUR Goals!

It is a secret, pure war art coming from South China and combines defence and neutralization of the enemy using the smallest possible energy. It revealed to the Western World through Bruce Lee.

Sifu David Galloway is a direct student of Sigung Gary Lam and brought the Gary Lam Wing Chun System to Bowmanville in 2007. He is specially trained by the Grandmaster in Los Angeles California.

It is suitable for everyone because it is the only war art in the world that has been designed from a woman while she was searching for a better and a smarter way to stand up to bigger and stronger opponents. It does not need you to have strength because you use the opponent's strength and your mind.

Little Warriors combines Street Safety, Discipline, Self Defense, Fitness, and Martial Arts to provide Life Skills Training for children ages Four through Six. Small class sizes, so limited spots available.

Clarington Remembers: Stories from WWI & WWIINow through December 2015The year 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I and the 75th anniversary of the beginning of World War II. Many Canadian men and women made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for their country over the span of both world wars. Clarington residents were no exception, signing up and shipping off to Europe, leaving their friends and families at home.Join us at Clarington Museums as we tell the stories of the men, women and children from Clarington who made contributions to the wars both overseas and on the home front. We encourage you to bring in your own stories and remembrances as we commemorate the efforts our citizens and ancestors made to the war efforts.
