I would like to welcome Pork on a Fork and Mark Field to the Arizona Billiard and Dart News family this month. While they are not your typical pool/dart advertisers, we all have to eat and most of us would like to save money on our mortgage. So check them out and let them know where you found out about them.

It is nice to see some of the local pool tournament directors spicing things up a bit. “Three man teams”, “King of the ?s”, “Rotating Games”. Those are some of the tourneys we have seen lately and I think they add some fun to the game. Kudos to those TD’s and hopefully we will see more of this sort of thing in the future.

We have both Desert Classic Tour & Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour events this month. Also an AZPL quarterly championship. Lots of good pool to get out there and watch. And always lots of good events to play in. Until next time... - Mike

Eans Bounces Back for Knobbys Win

Larry Eans took the scenic route, but in the end he double dipped Burt Balancad to win Knobby’s 9’s & Under 8-Ball event on April 4th.

Eans found himself on the one loss side early, after a second round loss to birth-day girl Sara Sorg.

On the winners side, Balancad took the hot-seat with a 2-1 win over Ben Sutherland.

Eans came back with wins over John Waldecker, Dana Moore, Richie Daniels, Steve Blackburn and Sutherland to earn a shot against Balancad in the finals.

The finals went to Eans 2-0 and 2-0.

The Desert Classic Tour drew a field of forty seven players to Kolbys Corner Pocket on April 5th & 6th for the 2014 Arizona State One Pocket Championship; and while the tournament came down to the two players that most fans in at-tendance expected to see, the final matches were crashed by a surprise combatant from Tucson.

It took all of Saturday and then some, to whittle the large field down to just twelve players who would come back on Sunday. Play ended after 3:30 early Sunday morning, but the players were back and ready to crown a champion late Sunday morning.

On the winners side, after Scott Frost beat Brian Reich and Mitch Ellerman beat Bret Huth, it was down to Scott and Mitch for the hot-seat. With the exception of a possible appearance by Bernie Pettipiece, most fans expected the tournament to come down to Scott and Mitch; arguably two of the best one pocket players in the State.

The hot-seat match saw Ellerman cruise to a 2-0 lead, but Frost’s experience then came through and he clawed back to win the match 3-2.

On the one loss side; Tres Kane, Jim Sinclair, Tucson’s Tom Neal and Bernie Pettipiece were still fighting it out. Tres would eliminate Sinclair in 7th place, while Neal shocked the crowd with a victory over Pettipiece.

Kane then went on to defeat Reich, and Neal kept his hopes alive by sending Huth to the rail in 5th place.

Tom Neal kept his winning streak going by beat-ing Tres, to set up a match with Ellerman in the semi-finals.

That match couldn’t have been any closer, as Ellerman won the match 3-2 with both players down to one ball in the final game. Certainly no newcomer to One Pocket, Neal had still surprised a number of the fans in attendance with his performance on Sunday. Neal seemed to play all day like he knew he wasn’t going to out-move the top one pocket players, but instead he played a more offensive game and took on a handful of shots that could have doomed him had they gone awry. “He was playing a very creative game” said Ellerman, “But it was working out for him there til the end”.

After the elimination of Neal in 3rd place, the finals came down to the match everyone wanted to see; Frost vs Ellerman in a race to five. Frost brought the ex-perience and the moves, while Ellerman brought the youthful confidence and top level shot making. With the break being as important as it is in one pocket, a lot of matches see each player winning on their break. That was how the finals went early on, with each player dominating on their break. After four games, the score was tied at 2-2, with a combined ball score of 18-17 Ellerman. The fifth and sixth games led to another tie at 3-3. After Ellerman won the seventh game to get to the hill, Frost knew he would have to win on his break and then again on Ellerman’s break in the final game. Frost was definitely playing well enough to do that, but he had watched a handful of balls play just a hair differ-ent than he expected during the match. Probably due to his playing with a new QB Custom Cue that he had received earlier in the week.

The eighth game saw a couple balls roll funny on Frost, and that was all of the opportunity that Ellerman needed as he pounced on the openings and won the final game 8-4 for the 5-3 win and his second Az State One Pocket

Title.

Frost was gracious in defeat, “Mitch played great. I need some time to get used to this cue, but I will be ready for him next time”.

As expected, Ellerman was humble after the tour-nament. “It was a good tournament. I am happy that I won. I understand that Scott is the better one pocket player, but I had my day. I am happy to see that I am able to keep up with a world class player. I feel good with my one pocket game and I know I am getting better. I don’t have to prove that I can make a great shot all the time anymore. My shot selection has gotten better. There is a wider scale of what I can do at the table and I don’t feel like I have to “go go go” all of the time.

The Desert Classic Tour will move to the barbox’s in May, with a 10-ball event at Stingers on May 17th -18th.

THE MECHANICS: Fundamental Facilitators

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

I recently wrote an article that focused on pool’s funda-mentals. In it I pointed out that there are only four things that are truly fundamental in the making of a good stroke. Those four things are: 1. Straight alignment, 2. Level cue, 3. Stay down, and 4. Fol-low through.

Now it is time to talk about some things that will help to develop and maintain a good stroke. These things involve the stance, the bridge, the head, the elbow, and the grip, and they are the things that make up the actual mechanics that are employed in any given player’s style.

At this point you might be say-ing to yourself, “Wait a minute, I thought all those things were part of the fundamentals.” To that, I answer, no.

If you read my other article

you might remember that I said many things have traditionally been accepted as fundamental truths, but those things are not truly fundamental; they are merely accessories in the acquisition of good fundamentals. That’s because the particular way a player goes about getting his cue to go through the cue ball straight and level is of no real con-sequence as long as he indeed gets the job done. But at the same time, I feel that any player who practices certain recommended mechanical techniques will, in the long run, have an advan-tage over those who do not.

Let’s look at a couple of examples of what I’m talking about.

If your swing arm, from the elbow down to the grip hand, points straight up and down as you set up for the shot, then it is a simple matter of pull-ing straight back on the cue, and then letting it go straight forward. But if you have an angular alignment in your forearm, it will equate to stick move-ment at an angle to the line of aim, and that will have to be adjusted in mid-

stroke in order to achieve a straight-on-line hit on the cue ball. Not that this can’t be done; but why take the hard route?

The same applies if you are in the habit of twisting your grip hand in or out, rather than letting it hang straight down. A twisted wrist puts twisting action on the cue, and again, that is something that has to be compensated for in mid-stroke.

There are a few other recommended mechanical techniques to go along with these two that can help facilitate better motion efficiency in the stroke, and in my next article I‘ll be present-ing all of them in a little more detail.

In the meantime remember, all good strokes may not include good mechan-ics, but good mechanics almost always make for good strokes.

Bull Shooters Installs A Carom Table

Carom Billiards is a game played on a big 5-ft x 10-ft, pocket-less table, and utilizes only three balls.

Simple forms of carom games require the shooter to only contact each of the other two balls with his cue ball in order to score a point. Runs in this game can be quite high.

A more challenging form of the game requires contact with both balls in combi-nation with three cushions in order to score one point. This form of the game is appropriately called Three-Cushion Billiards, and runs of ten, or more, points in this form are rare and outstanding.

In April, Mike Bates of Bull Shooters Billiards, installed a carom table at the request of several of his best players. Since its installation, the carom table has not only seen play from several of Bull Shooters’ regulars, it has drawn new players to the place who appear to have some experience at this beautiful game.

After witnessing the immediate success of his new carom table, Mike is now considering the installation of a full-size Snooker table.

Onward and upward, Bull Shooters!

Tres Wins “King of the Hill”

Bullshooters kicked off their new “King of the Hill” monthly 9s and under 9-ball tournament with a tough field of eight players on April 13th.

Two Bullshooters regulars, Tres Kane and Pat Dicker, came out of the field to play for the hot-seat; which went to Kane 9-4.

On the one loss side, another Bullshooters Regular John Ritonya defeated Dicker to send Pat to the rail in third place.

The finals would go two sets with Ritonya defeating Kane 9-5, and then Kane returning the favor with a 9-5 win of his own in the second set for first place.

Marshall Tops Feltman at Bullshooters

Streaming pool tournaments is usually a thankless job, but on April 19th Lenny Marshall was able to stream and win Bullshooters’ One Pocket Madness event.

Paul Feltman Sr. and Brett Huth came out of the field of sixteen players to face off for the hot-seat, which was won by Feltman 2-0.

On the one loss side, Marshall was on a roll after losing to Huth earlier in the event. After wins over Paul Feltman Jr. and John Ritonya, Marshall eliminated Huth 2-1 to earn his place in the finals.

The final match at this event is always a race to three with the player in the hot-seat having the first break. That looked to be the difference on this day as the first four games went to the player who broke. Marshall was able to break through and win on Feltman’s break in the final game though, for the 3-2 win.

Complete Payouts:1st Lenny Marshall $2302nd Paul Feltman Sr. $1703rd Brett Huth $1104th John Ritonya $70

The Arizona Hot Shots Pool League ended both it’s Wednesday Night In-House League at Metro Sportz Bar, and it’s Wednesday Night Traveling league in April.

The Metro In House League saw complete and total domination by Mitch Eller-man, with 83 wins, 36 table runs & 10 5-0 nights. Ellerman’s closest competi-tion was Chuck Parrill with 73 wins. Two players - Fernando Diaz and Keith H - had 10 table runs. Two players - Fernando Diaz and Tim Rachu - had 5 5-0 nights.

Ellerman’s team, Metro Los Putos, finished in third place, behind Metro Shot Callers and Metro 5 Mongorians. The Metro Shot Callers, consisted of Tim Ra-chu, Mike Wall, Craig Pelleran, Mike McGovern, Matt Edgars, Tim Bridgewa-ter and Jason Polk. The 5 Mongorians consisted of Fernando Diaz, Chris Ray, Pete Fox, Brian McGee and Matt Koskella.

While the Wednesday Night Traveling league did not see one player dominate the stats, it was dominated by one team.

The Bullshooters Bulldawgs not only took first place, a full 12.5 points ahead of their closest competitors, they also fielded the three top overall players in the league. Taking top honors was Tres Kane, with 59 wins, 12 table runs and 9 4-0 nights. Tres’ teammates, Louie Fratini and Paul Vasi, finished in 2nd and 3rd overall.

The top team was made up of Kane, Fratini, Vasi, Sara Miller, Lance Smyth, Chris Shenker and Pat Dicker.

Finishing in second place was The Snap Payback II, consisting of Manuel Bella II, Omar Morazan, JD Griffith, Ernie Herrera, Oscar Castro, Lindsey Howard, Joseph Farias and Angus Kittle.

Both leagues will be getting back underway in May.

The Arizona Ratings Committee held their sec-ond meeting of the year at Max & Ted’s 480 on April 13th.

Before the business of raising players got started, committee chairman Bill Van Der Weyst dis-cussed the recent letter regarding the committee in the pages of this paper. While not agreeing with all of the points listed in the letter, Van Der Weyst did admit that the committee should have a formal mission statement, which he will draft for review at the next meeting.

Other early business involved a player who had been disqualified during a local tournament, due to the tournament director’s opinion that the player had hid his true ability when being rated. A proposal was made to the committee to make an official stance that players should be allowed to continue playing in any event that they have paid entry to. The committee voted on this pro-posal and it was unanimously voted down.

The following players had their ratings raised…

Tim Biggs - 6-7Rusty Bliss - 5-6Billy Coulston - 7-8Heidi French - 4-5Steve Goodman - 6-7Sherri Grieve - 4-6Jim Henrickson - 8-9Adam Kroll - 6-7David Linke - 6-7Brian Long - 6-7Donald Mangahas - 8-9Omar Morazan (Flores) - 6-7Jaye Succo - 6-7Barry Tapley - 7-8Justin Volk 7-9

Bull Shooters’ Intro League Crowns New Champion

The team called Dice (Phil Ham-ilton, Larry Pew, Rory Van Rummen) has ended the reign of the Scor-pions (Adam Zentz, Jim Zentz, Russell Williams) by capturing first place in the Winter/Spring session of Bull Shooters’ Monday night in-house 8-Ball league.

The Scorpions dominated the first two sessions of this league by finishing in first place both times. This third session, however, was a different story as the Dice jumped into first place on the first night of play, and then never looked back. They held onto first place throughout the entire session.

In view of the fact that most of the players in the “Intro League” are no lon-ger beginners, Bull Shooters has decided to change the name of this Monday night league. The new name will be: MFL’s (Most Fun League) Monday Night 8-Ball, patterned after NFL’s Monday Night Football.

The new league name is meant to better reflect the kind of people who are play-ing in it: fun people. While it has become somewhat more competitive, it is still not a cutthroat atmosphere. Low weekly dues make it not only affordable, they keep the payouts small, which in turn keeps the main emphasis off of playing for money. The people who play in this league say they love the short matches and the camaraderie more than anything. They also like the way the players work with one another to help everyone play better and have more fun.

The Spring/Summer session is scheduled to start May 5. Stop by Bull Shooters and ask for Roger if you are interested in joining this fun league.

APA will be holding its 1st annual junior’s National Championships at Shar-key’s Billiards in Davenport, Iowa this July 16 and 17th. APA Phoenix Metro will be sending 7 young players ranging in age from 8 to 16 years old to the event from money that the kids raised in various fund raising events over the past year. We also collected many donations from the APA players as well, said Gina Nowlin, APA league operator here in Phoenix. It was great to see the adult players excited about helping the young players getting to perform on a national stage like this, she said.

The junior program has been going on here in the valley for about 5 years now and has grown tremendously from its beginning. Bullshooters, at 35th Ave and Peoria, has been the home facility for the kids since they started. The owners and staff at Bullshooters have supported the young players and have always been there for all the events that helped raise money for the kids to attend this event.

The kids are divided into 2 groups depending on age, skill and maturity. The younger players are called the ‘Junior Guns’. They range from 6 to 10 years old. ‘Young Guns’ are a little older at from 11 to 17 years old. Both groups play every other Sunday morning at Bullshooters in a 13 to 15 week session that ends with their awards ceremony followed by the ‘Junior/Adult tournament. Trophies are handed out to the kids for their accomplishments during the regular season as they enjoy a special lunch served by the kitchen at Bullshooters. Then, it’s time for the tournament, where the junior players pick a parent or adult of their choice to play in a scotch doubles tournament for prizes and trophies. This tournament has become the showcase for the junior’s league and is always full of fun and surprises for both the adults and the kids.

This year, for the National Championship, APA Phoenix Metro held a qualifying tournament for the juniors to compete for a spot at the Championship. Michael Dale, age 16, as the reigning champion secured his spot automatically.

Selena West, age 12, came in 1st place at the tournament followed by our youngest gun, Ian Maldonado. At age 8, Ian played excellent to capture 2nd place. 9 year old Memphis Norton was the 3rd place winner and 13 year old James Reinhart came in 4th. Emilou Nutter (12) and Jahnythan Craig (9) are also going.

All 7 players are off to Iowa in July to represent Phoenix. We want to wish all of them lots of luck…….

Joe Avila & Mark Catanzaro avenged their only loss of the day and that was good enough for them to split the Groggy’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles 9-Ball event on April 5th.

Joe & Mark’s one loss came at the hands of Bill Van Der Weyst and Robert Vil-linus. Bill & Robert would go on to play for the hot-seat, where they would lose to Charlie Taylor & Harold Lyons 8-3.

After Joe & Mark got their revenge on Bill & Robert 6-6, they agreed to a split with Charlie & Harold without playing a set.

Deja Vu at Groggys

Groggy’s 14 & Under Scotch Doubles event on April 12th was a case of deja-vu as Joe Avila & Mark Catanzaro duplicated their performance from the previous weekend.

Joe & Mark lost an early match to a team that went on to lose in the hot-seat match (Tim Biggs & Lawrence Ybarra), just like the previous week.

After Tim & Lawrence lost the hot-seat match to Chris Negrin & Amado Marti-nez 8-5, Joe & Mark got their revenge by eliminating Tim & Lawrence 7-2, just like the previous week.

Instead of splitting without playing a set in the finals, Joe & Mark defeated Chris & Amado 7-3 in the first set and then agreed on a 50/50 split in the end.

Mike, with so many new brands of darts coming out, how is one suppose to know what to shoot? Great question, with many possible answers. But first, you want to get a dart that feels comfortable to you.

Don’t let someone talk you into a dart just because they shoot with them. You throw totally different than anybody else.

Also, if you are a real begin-ner, don’t spend a lot of money on an expensive dart, you may throw it great in the store or in your buddies basement, but in the real world it may not be right at all.

I had a very nice lady come in the other day with some darts she paid over $60 for from a local dart shop. They were darts that went out of style 5 years ago. She lobbed her dart

and they sold her totally front loaded darts and she didn’t understand why at the shop they flew so well and now she wasn’t even reaching the board. I asked why she spent so much and she said all the other sets they showed her were over $80.

So, buy a $15 to $20 set and work with them and see how you do. At least you can buy two more sets at that price and still be under $60.

If you like a grip, get darts with a grip, don’t let someone tell you smooth is better.

Also the shafts and flights will affect your throw more than the barrel. If you have small hands and lob your darts, do not get long shafts and speed flights.

Most beginning dart throwers should start with the bigger flights and work their way into the others.

Now to all the new darts; I know people who change darts like I change

By Mike Bates

Ask Mike

my underwear. And yes I change them more than once a week, thank you.

I have played darts for over 30 years and have had five sets of darts. For about 28 years I played with the same Bottelsen darts that I started with - just moved up a couple times in weight.

Most of the time it is not the dart, but the dart player. I picked my first set out by buying the blue darts with the Coors flights. (My favorite color and favorite beer). I played with them for the first 12 years, winning the NDA world open team championships in 1991. They were very worn down, but still worked.

So if you feel comfortable, get your game going first before you change your dart.

I have seen great players pick up any darts and shoot a perfect game. So I believe a player can make any dart work with enough practice. These are just my thoughts and I might be wrong, but I doubt it.

Gonzalez Wins at Stingers

After not being able to play in the One Pocket Madness event due to a full field of players, Jose Gonzalez made the best of things and entered Stinger’s 9s & Under 8-Ball event on April 19th, where he took first place.

Gonzalez faced Tucson’s Mike Hamman for the hot-seat after both players navigated a string of tough matches. Jose had notable wins over Ken Gouso and Jimmy Brewer, while Mike had notable wins over Burt Balancad & Mike Wil-liams.

Jose took the hot-seat with a hill-hill win over Hamman, sending Hamman to the one loss side.

On the left side of the board, Brewer had just finished eliminating Gouso hill-hill, but Hamman ran over Brewer 4-1 to earn another shot at Gonzalez in the finals.

The first set of the finals saw Hamman defeated Gonzalez 4-1, but Jose came back and won the second set 5-2 for the tournament victory.

Doc & Becky took the hot-seat with a hard fought 8-4 win over Joe Nicita & Ray Shaban, and got ready for the long wait for an opponent in the finals.

On the one loss side, Flaherty and Tyrell were run-ning over teams. The semi-finals saw Skyler and Ricky made quick work of Joe & Ray 8-1.

Considering the late hour, the final two teams agreed on a split instead of playing the final match.

Vikete & Long took the hot-seat with a 6-3 win over JW & Wizzard.

On the one loss side, Robert & Joe were on a roll after losing their first match of the day. They rode the left side of the board to the semi-finals, where they defeated JW & Wiz-zard 6-2.

Aaron Purdy & John Schramm enjoyed their win at Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event in March so much, that they decided to come back and defend the title in April.

As they did in March, Aaron & John took the hot-seat; this time with a 9-5 win over Hopell Ampongan & Bernie Papa.

On the one loss side, Hopell & Bernie lost to JR Flores & John Melchor 8-5. Flores & Melchor had lost to Aaron & John on the winners side, but would get their chance for revenge in the finals.

That revenge would not come on this day though, as Aaron & John completed their second straight undefeated run through the field with a 9-5 win in the finals.

John Schramm & Aaron PurdyAlways looking to bring something new to the local pool tourney scene, Sophia Morquecho drew forty two players to Stingers on April 5th and 6th for three man team 8-ball. The “team handicap - 10” format saw long races between some of the top bar box 8-ball players in the valley.

Four teams came back on Sunday with hopes of capturing first place. On the winners side, Trip Aces (Alex Aroz, Nick Cipiti & Jeremy Nelson) took the hot-seat with a 14-7 win over TVL (Randy Kinny, Frank Alvarez & Burt Bal-ancad). On the one loss side, 3 Blind Mice (Jerry Stuckart, Mike Sandoval & Brian Long) eliminated The Pinheads (Ben Sutherland, Jimmy Brewer & Steve Blackburn) 14-3.

In the closest match of the day, TVL then sent 3 Blind Mice home in 3rd place with a 13-10 decision.

That set up the finals, a rematch between Trip Aces and TVL. The final match would go one set, with Trip Aces scoring a 14-9 win for first place in this unique event.

Complete Payouts:1st Trip Aces (Aroz, Cipiti & Nelson) $9002nd TVL (Kinny, Alvarez & Balancad) $5903rd 3 Blind Mice (Stuckart, Sandoval & Long) $3004th Pinheads (Sutherland, Brewer & Blackburn) $120

ARE YOU TALKING TO ME? ...YOU TALKING TO ME?SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIENDS…

LEAGUE ACTIONWOW! The Eastern division is all over the place. Teams have been all over the board and at this point the wild card race is shaping up pretty good. The divi-sion leader Doom is not in the clear yet either.

The Western division is looking similar as well with a change at the top recent-ly! Exciting to see the two divisions so closely matched.

Equally the stats pages are shuffling as well! The few and proud have hung on to gain the top spots in many areas. Strategies and careful alignments on league nights have become ever evident. However, if you are simply not playing in or-der to maintain your top spot, I say here “wuss wuss wuss” or the classic “bauk bauk bauk”!!!! Man (or woman) up and play!

Don’t forget to thank the bars we play in and support the efforts of AZ foosball by purchasing food and beverages from supporting establishments. Thanks for the support!

TOURNAMENTSAZ Foosball puts on some of the best weekly tourneys. The payouts are decent, people are awesome and a good time is inevitable. Show your support and play at a local bar near you. If you get crazy, cross the city and play at one not close to you for a change of scenery.

Foos PulseCheck out arizonafoosball.com “Coming Events” section for all weekly tour-neys all over the valley.

Also, check out the videos on YouTube, complements of Brad Chamberlain. Type in Arizona Foosball and have a look, they are pretty good!

SHOT OF THE MONTHThis month’s shot pays homage to the great pumba and his classic shot “THE DINK”. Maybe more than any shot in existence, this vital shot can be used to keep goalies honest and keep them closer to home for more options long.

Dink from the pullDink from Pull Kick Dink from front pin And, of course, the slow roller from the goalie, that no matter how hard or fast you move your defensive men, seems to slip through them as if you were hold-ing them up! Yup that one! It’s a great addition to your tool box of shots. So master the dink and watch your opponent’s face after it rolls in ever-so-slowly for a game winning point. Hilarious (except when it happens to me)!RULES CORNERThis area will be dedicated to the rules of foosball for both league and tourneys. If you have any requests, let me know and I will post for the world to see.

Goalie WarsPlayers lift up the forward rods and battle it out from the goal. Standard ITSF rules apply, with the following notes/exceptions:

Serve: Players serve per standard rules directly to their goalie position.Ball Possession: Once a ball leaves a player’s goalie area, it is considered to be in the possession of the opposing player until it enters and leaves his/her goalie area. A ball that stops between the two goalies shall be re-served by the player ruled in possession.Neutral men: All unused player figures are considered neutral; a ball that strikes these figures is a live ball.Time limits: 10 seconds.

Foos and roll!Steve Simpson
