Silent Prayer

Welcoming God: you gather everyone, especially the outsiders,

to worship you, for you are not an image or idol,

but protector of the helpless, parent to the poor, friend of the lonely.

Be with us this day. Amen.

Centering Music - “Thou Art Worthy” STF# 2041 Thou art worthy, thou art worthy, thou art worthy O Lord,

to receive glory, glory and honor, glory and honor and power.

For thou has created, hast all things created; thou hast created

all things.

And for thy pleasure they are created; thou art worthy, O Lord.

(*Please stand for items marked with an asterisk. GTG is the purple “Glory to

God” hymnal. STF is the “Sing the Faith” smaller blue hymnal)

Call to Worship Leader: In the gathering of school supplies, in the harvesting of backyard gardens: People: God blesses us beyond imagination. Leader: In the simple acts of daily chores, in the kindness shared by a stranger: People: God is gracious to us. Leader: In the rapture of a child watch a firefly, in the inquisitive look of a senior wondering where they left their keys: People: God's face shines upon us. Leader: We praise you, O God! Leader: We praise you!

*Hymn - “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” GTG #366 *Prayer of Confession

Leader: We may praise God, but we prefer to live our way, becoming captive to our foolish choices. But God longs to set us free, so let us confess to our God, as we pray together, saying, All: In every opportunity, God of this day, we choose not to follow you. From our hearts to our mouths flow words that hurt others, come thoughts that lead us away from you. We are richly blessed, but think others should be grateful for the crumbs we offer to them. Our claims to have great faith are disputed by our inability to trust you in all things. We come to you, Helper of the weak, for you are gracious and forgiving. You offer us the fullness of your love, not just a few dollops. You refuse to let us go, but sweep us up with arms of joy. You send Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, to lead us into your kingdom.

Silence is kept

Page 5: Collingswood Presbyterian Church · COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY August 17, 2014 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME Silent Prayer

*Assurance of Pardon Leader: I ask you, has God rejected us? People: No! By God's grace, God's gifts and God's calling are never taken back. Leader: I ask you, again, has God rejected us? People: No! That Love we know as God will never let us go. Leader: This is good news, dear friends, believe it. People: Thanks be to God. We are forgiven. Amen.

*Musical response - “You Are the Lord, Giver of Mercy” GTG #437 You are the Lord, giver of mercy! You are the Christ, giver of mercy! You are the Lord, giver of mercy!

*Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

Children’s Sermon (All children are to remain in service.)

Musical Offering - “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” - from “Messiah” by GF Handel, Sung by Jahnel Mikolajczak

Old Testament Lesson: 2 Samuel 13:1-17(page 283)

*Hymn - “Though I May Speak” GTG #693

New Testament Lesson: 1 Corinthians 6:12-29 (page 1041)

“Theme Song “Seven Deadly Sins” Words by James Mitchell (sung to the tune of “Gilligan’s Island”)

Today we meet another sin - The deadly sin of Lust. We think we have desires when Desire's having us. Now Ginger was a movie star who had a clever plan To use desires like hidden wires to handle any man. MEN (To handle any man). (continues on next page)

Page 6: Collingswood Presbyterian Church · COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY August 17, 2014 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME Silent Prayer

King David's son, old Am-uh-non, said passion couldn't wait and then found in indulging sin, his love turned into hate. MEN (His love turned into hate.) We run aground when we are found inviting these things in. There's Sloth, of course, And Gluttony, Our Anger, and our Greed. The lure of Lust, Pride, and Envy, the Seven Deadly Sins!

Sermon: “Seven Deadly Sins - The Sin of Lust” The Rev. Dr. Katherine G. Killebrew

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

*Litany of Faith

Leader: “So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep

sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the

man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then

the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken

out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”

(Genesis 2:21-22)

People: We were created to love one another- to be together.

Guide us O Lord in good relationships.

Leader: Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your

arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding

as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty

flame. (Song of Solomon 8:6-7)

People: Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it

away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house

for love, it would be utterly scorned.

Leader: “You shall not commit adultery.” ( Exodus 20:14 )

People: God gave us bodies to cherish, to love and to show our

love. We should not be ashamed of these gifts. Help us

to be careful of our loved ones. Let us be true and

faithful.

Page 7: Collingswood Presbyterian Church · COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY August 17, 2014 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME Silent Prayer

Leader: “But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman

with lustful intent has already committed adultery with

her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28)

People: Just because we have not acted, it does not mean we are

without sin. Our thoughts can hurt us and make us see

others as objects.

Leader: “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give

me life in your ways.” (Psalm 119:37)

People: Help us to see others as you see them, O God- treasured

gifts of creation.

Leader: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you

abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you

know how to control his own body in holiness and honor,

not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not

know God;” (I Thessalonians 4:3-5)

People: To lust is to be out of control, abusive and hungry to

use others. Let us find good ways to love one another

without hurt.

Leader: “For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the

lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the

Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass

away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

( I John 2:16)

People: As Paul has said “I appeal to you therefore, brothers

(and sisters), by the mercies of God, to present your

bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God,

which is your spiritual worship.” (Romans 12:1)

Offering

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us,

that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

For this is the message you heard from the beginning:

We should love one another.” I John 3

“Sacred the Body” by Ruth Duck

“Honor God with your Body” I Corinthians 6:20

Sacred the body

God has created,

temple of Spirit that dwells deep inside.

Cherish each person;

nurture relation.

Treat flesh as holy, that love may abide.

Bodies are varied,

made in all sizes,

pale, full of color; both fragile and strong.

Holy the difference,

gift of the Maker,

so let us honor each story and song.

Love respects persons,

bodies and boundaries.

Love does not batter, neglect, or abuse.

Love touches gently,

never coercing.

Love leaves the other with power to choose.

Holy of holies,

God ever loving,

make us your temples; indwell all we do.

May we be careful,

tender and caring,

so may our bodies give honor to you.

support themselves, their families and their communities. When

you purchase it through the Presbyterian Coffee Project, you are
