CHEST PAIN ANDMISCONCEPTIONS

Chest pain is one such symp-tom, which brings extremesof emotions; outright denial orbecoming hypochondriac andgets consumed by it. Thereare so many causes of it butdefinitely heart attack (myo-cardial infarction) tops the listby its seriousness. Yes, chestpain is a emergency but thereare so many misconceptionabout it among common manthat deserves to be cleared. Iwould like to make an attemptto do so;

1) A normal ECGdoes not rule out heart attack.I wish this statement gets in-grained in everybody includ-ing doctors. Only serial ECGatleast over 24 hrs durationmust be done under medicalsupervision.

2) Just because ant-acids or belching out gas re-lieves the pain, doesnot meanthat it is due to indigestion. Many lives are lost by attrib-uting gas for chest pain. Cau-

tious over diagnosis is accept-able rather than under diag-nosing and missing out a im-pending heart attack.

3) Typica l chestpain seen in bollywood mov-ies are exception ratherthan rule. I have had pa-tients with slight chest dis-comfort but more pain inback or in hand, turning outto be MI(myocardial inf-arction).

4) Diabetic patientsare more prone to haveatypical presentations. So

threshold for suspicionshould be low in diabetics. All is not well in them justbecause blood sugar is nor-mal or under control. Dia-betes is a cardio vasculardisease. So lipids, kidneys, heart, eye, nerves has to bePeriodically tested to pre-vent complications.

5) If u have a fam-ily history of heart attack, one should be very cautiousand chest pain needs to di-agnosed proper ly by its

Don't miss majesticDesert Breath' on Google Map!London: No, this is not a landscapefor aliens to land their extraterres-trial aircrafts or an ancient monumentunearthed in the Egyptian desert.

This amazing photograph isan environmental art installation andGoogle Map has taken an awesomeimage of this piece of artwork fromabove the sky.

Billed as Desert Breath, thehuge 1 million square foot structureis constructed as two interlockingspirals - one with vertical cones, theother with conical depressions in thedesert floor, said media reports.

Desert Breath was originallydesigned with a small lake at its cen-tre but the lake has emptied.

It was created by theD.A.S.T. Arteam, a group made up

of three artists - sculptor DanaeStratou, industrial designer sculptorAlexandra Stratou and architectStella Constantinides - in 1997.

"The project was meant tosuggest an experience of infinity withthe desert as a landscape of the mind.Even though it is in a state of slowdisintegration, 'Desert Breath' is stillviewable almost two decades afterits creation," said the creators.

It consists of 89 protrudingcones of gradually increasing size setin a spiral and another 89 depressed(incised) cones set in spirals.

The sand dug out from thedepressed cones was used to createthe protruding cones, resulting in thedisplacement of 280,000 square feetof sand.

roots. It is a strong predictor ofchances of having MI.

6) Risk factors like smok-ing, diabetes, sedentary life style, fat over waist, stress needs to beconsidered for triaging chest pain.

7) Young age does notmean that chest pain is harmless.Indians are prone to have heart at-tack a decade ear lier thanwesterners. My youngest patient ofMI is 32 years of age.

8) Eating fish especiallyfresh water fish, green salad, us-ing olive oil\sunflower oil or saffflower when mixed withsoyabean\mustard oil at 60:40 ra-

tio with per person not more thanone litre per month, helps in reduc-ing MI.

9) Nothing beats the ben-efits that one gains from regularbrisk walking of 30 minute dura-tion of 5 days per week.

10) Information is dime adozen these days. The point iswhether the source is authentic. Sobefore googling chest pain and get-ting drown in the avalanche of in-formation that leaves u either con-fused or very apprehensive, con-sult your doctor. Nothing canmatch a attentively Listened his-tory along with a healing touch.

Meningitis patientscould benefit from new testA new laser-based test hasbeen developed by scientistsat a Scottish university tospeed up the diagnosis of bac-terial meningitis.

"The onset of menin-gitis is often rapid and severe, particularly when a bacterialinfection is the cause and thelatest research could speedup diagnosis, leading to bet-ter outcomes for patient," theGlasgow-based University ofStrathclyde said in a state-ment.

The test usesnanoparticles and lasers tofingerprint more than one bac-terium at a time - and soopens the way for targetedtreatment.Unless caughtquickly, bacterial meningitiscan lead to blood poisoningand brain damage.Bacterialmeningitis is most common inchildren under five and it canoften take time to diagnoseprecisely which bacteria areresponsible. The new process- called Surface EnhancedRaman Scattering (SERS) -scatters laser light from asample that has been com-bined with silvernanoparticles.

Dr Karen Faulds, aReader in Strathclyde's De-partment of Pure and Applied

Chemistry, led the study."Meningitis is a

hugely virulent and, in someforms, potentially highly dan-gerous infection. The type ofantibiotic used to treat it de-pends on the strain of menin-gitis, so it is essential to iden-tify this as quickly as pos-sible," Faulds said.

"The great advan-tage of the SERS techniqueis that it gives sharp, recognisable signals, like fin-ger printing, so we can moreeasily discriminate whatanalytes or chemical sub-stances are present in a mix-ture."

Combining the SERStechnique with chemometricsdata-driven extraction of in-formation from chemical sys-tems means the amount ofbacteria in a sample can bemeasured whilst simulta-neously identifying the bacte-ria.

The researchers be-lieve the new test would beparticularly useful where co-infection of multiple speciesis common and identifying thedominant pathogen presentwould allow targetedtreatment. The study has beenpublished in the journalChemical Science.

Ram Vilas Paswan all set to alignwith BJP again in Lok Sabha polls

NEW DELHI: The LokJanshakti Party (LJP),headed by Ram Vilas Paswanwhich left NDA in 2002 overthe 2002 Gujarat riots, todaygave clear indications of ty-ing up with BJP in the LokSabha polls in Bihar.

The new tie up thatmay come as a jolt to Con-gress' plans to have a "secu-lar" alliance with his party andRJD is likely to be announcedin the next few days as LJP'sParliamentary Board that mettoday authorised Paswan totake a final decision in this re-gard.

"The LJP Parliamen-tary Board has passed a reso-lution that all steps, even ifthey are strong ones, should

be taken in the interest of theparty and if an alternative al-liance is to be firmed up partychief Ram Vilas Paswanshould take the decision", saidhis son Chirag Paswan, whoheads the ParliamentaryBoard.

He told reportersthat there was a "deadlock"on the issue of alliance be-tween RJD-Congress andLJP.

To a questionwhether LJP will tie-up withBJP, he said that "all optionsare now open for the LJP".

The LJP chief saidmembers in the Parliamen-tary Board were of the opin-ion that the option of goingwith BJP should also be kept

open."We had our griev-

ances with RJD for a longtime. I had even gone to meetLalu Prasad in jail. But soonafter he was out, RJD lead-ers started saying LJP shouldbe given three seats. That iswhy we left it to Congress todecide the seat sharing. Iwaited for months, but therewas no decision.

"They assumed thatLJP is nothing, it is irrelevant. If one takes 25 seats (RJD)and the other 15 (Cong). Itmeans they do not treat LJPas part of the alliance.... Thatis why the party hasauthorised me to explore newalternative," Ram VilasPaswan said.
