First off, I would like to welcome Enoch’s and Max & Ted’s 480 Bar to the Billiard and Dart News family. Both of these rooms have been long time supporters of local pool and/or darts players. If you havn’t stopped by one of these rooms lately, swing by and welcome them to the paper. Also, don’t miss the beach party at Enoch’s on July 14th. I would also like to welcome Jackie Karol to the paper. Jackie has been a pool player for many years and is now teaching on the West Coast. Her instructional column is on page 14. There seem to be lots of dart tournaments coming up on the horizon. Team events, fundraisers and memorials. Seems like the dart world always has something going on. On the pool side of things, congrats to Bobby Emmons and Angel Paglia who won the DCT and AWBT stops in June. Nice shooting to both of you.

-Mike

Bobby Emmons brought his youthful “fire at will” game with him to the Desert Classic Tour’s only visit to Tucson this year on June 23rd - 24th, and proved once again to the fans in Phoenix that he is always a danger to snap off any Arizona event that he enters.

The drive to Tucson has been known to dissuade some players from participating in the annual event at Pockets, but that was not the case this year as a field of 45 players were in attendance. The field drew the usual assortment of top talent from Phoenix, the best players in Tucson, and a couple of the fiercest female competitors in the state.

As is always the case with such a tough field, there were a couple surprising early eliminations as Tucson’s Don Westbrooks, George Teyechea and Susan Williams all fell victim to the “two and out” jinx at this one. Brett Huth also ended his string of top finishes as he ended up out of the money this time.

Although Susan Williams was eliminated early, Sara Miller, Susan Wilbur and Tracie Hamman carried the torch for the female players at the event with Sara pulling off a very nice upset win over Tucson’s Rudy Alameda.

As the field thinned on Saturday, it was pretty apparent that Emmons was going to be the player to beat in this one. “It was typical Bobby. He might miss a couple balls here and there, but that didn’t phase him. He was definitely the best player in the room all weekend” said tour direc-tor Dennis Orender.

Emmons really put his foot down in the tourna-ment after his Saturday win over Mitch Eller-

man. “Neither of us brought our games to that match, and I knew I couldn’t win the tournament playing like that” said Em-mons. After the loss to Emmons, Ellerman would be eliminated by Chris Paradowski on Sunday.

Emmons went on to remain undefeated on Saturday and found himself competing for the hot-seat on Sunday against tour points leader Chuck Evans. That match would be a close one, but Emmons would win it 7-5.

On the one loss side, Evans found Tres Kane waiting. Kane has lost a match on Saturday to Arizona’s newest 9 rated player, Jerry Stuckart, on Saturday but was on a six match winning streak to get to the match against Emmons. That would be where Kane’s winning streak would end, as Evans beat him 7-4 to earn another shot at Emmons in the finals.

The first set of the finals would be a carbon copy of the first match between these two players, as Evans tried his best to slow down Emmons’ rapid fire ball making, but in the end it was another 7-5 win for Emmons and an undefeated run through the field. “I was just trying to keep my mind clear and play with no pressure” said Emmons. “Chuck played a great tourna-ment” Emmons added.

Orender expressed his thanks to Lenny and his staff for another great event. Orender also wanted to thank Alf Taylor for sitting in with George Teyechea to commen-tate the finals on the live stream.

The Desert Classic Tour’s next event will be a B/C Only event at Bullshooters on July 28th and 29th.

Final Payouts:

1st Bobby Emmons $9152nd Chuck Evans $5653rd Tres Kane $3254th Chris Paradowski $2005th Dennis Orender $1255th Jim Hendrickson $1257th Mitch Ellerman $757th Mike Sandoval $75

The Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour held their second point event of the season over the week-end of June 30th - July 1st on the 9 foot tables at Skip & Jan’s. The field of twenty seven players consisted of ladies from Nevada, New Mexico and Wisconsin, as well as the top ladies from Arizona.

Tour points leader Angel Paglia was the early favorite, and she lived up to that billing with day one wins over Beverly Cook and Tucson’s Tracie Hamman.

Joining Angel on the winners side after one day of play were Stacy Allsup, Nina Tagley and Su-san Williams. Williams had an especially tough bracket on Saturday and scored wins over Susan Wilbur, Sara Miller and Justine Bishop to remain undefeated.

The tournament paid twelve spots, but only eight players would come back on Sunday. That left Jodi Hirning, Jaye Succo, Cathy Kelley and Ly-nor Johnson in 9th place with $25 each.

Sunday dawned with Hamman eliminating Bishop and Miller ending Gaff’s tournament in 7th place.

Meanwhile, on the winners side, Susan Williams scored a comeback win over Angel Paglia to send Paglia to the unfamiliar territory of the one loss side. Williams trailed in this match 6-4, but came back with three straight games to win the match 7-6.

Williams opponent for the hot-seat would be Las Vegas’ Stacy Allsup, who had earned a tough 7-5 win over Nina Tagley.

The match for the hot-seat was not a pretty one as both players struggled to find their games. Williams had the best of it though, with 3-0 and 6-1 leads before putting the match away 7-3.

Back on the one loss side, Tracie Hamman was con-tinuing her great play in this event and scored a 7-6 win over Nina Tagley. Tagley settled for 5th place along with Sara Miller who lost to Angel on the left side of the board.

Next up was a rematch between Paglia and Hamman. Paglia had sent Hamman to the one loss side in a close 7-5 match on Saturday, but the rematch would be all Paglia as she cruised to a 7-1 win and Hamman earned her best AWBT finish in 4th place.

The semi-final match between Paglia and Allsup started off looking like another easy win for Paglia, but Allsup wasn’t going to go back to Vegas that quick. Paglia rushed out to an early 4-0 lead, but a scratch on the 8-ball in the fifth rack gave Allsup a little air and she took full advantage by winning the next three games to get back within one rack at 4-3. Allsup had a chance to knot the match at 5-5, but missed a 9-ball and instead trailed 6-4. Paglia would go on from there to win the match 7-5 and force a rematch with Susan Williams in the finals.

Things started out close at 1-1 in the finals, but Paglia made her move with four straight wins for a 5-1 lead. Paglia held a 7-2 lead when Williams tried to make

one last stand. Williams won two of the next three games to get back to 8-4 before Paglia put the match away 9-4 for the tournament win and $315 in prize money. Williams settled for $210 for sec-ond.

The second chance event on Sunday would see an undefeated run by Susan Wrightson, a veteran of the game who is coming back from a multi year layoff. Wrightson defeated Angela Brown 3-1 for the hot-seat and defeated Brown again 5-1 in the extended final match.

Tour director Kristie Ortega and Tres Kane thanked Natalie Poynter and her staff at Skip & Jan’s for another great tournament. They also thanked both Jose Gonzales and their anonymous benefactor for helping make this event a $600 added event.

The next stop on the AWBT Tour will be at Pockets in Tucson on September 15th and 16th.

Knobby’s held their monthly open 8 ball tournament on Friday June 1.

The competition is always tough but due to the Vegas tournament only 8 play-ers showed up to battle it out in this monthly event. Due to the small number of players, everyone agreed to extend the race to three games on the winners side and a race to 2 on the losers side.

Burt Balancad and Ed Scott played for the hot seat. They battled it out with Burt down 2-0 before coming back to win 3-2 and taking the hot seat.

Pat Dicker and Ed played the next match. Pat got the victory with a 2-0 win over Ed.

In the Finals, Burt was still playing strong with a 3-0 victory over Pat to take $160.00 for 1st place and Pat got $80.00 for 2nd place.

Knobby’s next open 8 ball tournament will be held Friday July 6, 2012.

Metro Sportz Bar’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on June 23rd was a pretty unusual tourna-ment in a couple different respects.

The first surprising part of the tournament was that the battle for the hot-seat took place between two 10 rated teams.

Sara Sorg and Brent Willis took on Patrick Cro-nin and Thomas Young for the hot-seat in a race to five. Cronin and Young fought to the hill at 4-2, but dropped the next three games to lose the match 5-4.

On the one loss side, the last of the 12 rated teams were facing off to determine who would finish in fourth place and who would continue in the event.

That match would see Anje Anderson & Joe Nicita take on Leo Satterwhite & Mark Williams. Both teams were on winning streaks on the one loss side with Anje & Joe winning three in a row and Leo & Mark on a five match streak.

This match would come down a 6-6 scoreline and end with another unusual happening as An-derson scratched as she made the 9-ball, losing the match to Leo & Mark.

The semi-final match would see Satterwhite & Williams face Cronin & Young with Cronin & Young going to 5, while Satterwhite and Wil-liams went to 7.

Patrick & Thomas took advantage of a couple early rolls and found themselves ahead in the match 3-0 before Leo and Mark knew what hit them. Leo and Mark buckled down and won the next four games to take the lead at 4-3. The

match would be won by the final score of 5-4, when Cronin and Young missed a ball but saw the cue ball inadvertently knock the 9-ball into the pocket.

Now down to just two teams, the tournament was not done with the unusual oc-curances.

The finals of any good sized scotch doubles pool tournament is usually a battle between two very tired teams and sometimes, one team will just give up after they get down by a couple of games. This tournament saw the exact op-posite happen.

Cronin and Young came out strong and took an early 2-0 lead in the double elimination race to 5. That was when they did something you rarely see in the finals of an event as Young unscrewed his cue mid-game and announced that they would take second place.

Sorg and Willis were not sure what had happened, but were very pleased to collect their first place prize of $670 (they only bought into one side pot).

Cronin and Young earned $260 for second place in the event.

Having bought into all of the side pots, Satterwhite and Williams took home $314 for third place and the team of Nicita and Anderson settled for $208 in prize money.

If you are a novice player, and the title of this DVD leads you to believe that it will teach you how to play Bank Pool, then you are sure to be disappointed if you purchase this disc. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t even teach you the basics of bank-ing. That’s not to say it doesn’t have some great qualities, be-cause it does. But those great qualities can’t even be recog-nized unless the viewer already has a considerable amount of knowledge in the art of banking balls.

John Brumback is a master at the game of Bank Pool – a fact that is well documented throughout the entire length of this one-hour and fifty-minute video. And although the sub-title to the DVD reads “Secrets Of A World Champion” there really aren’t that many secrets involved and they probably aren’t the kind of secrets a person might logically expect

them to be: i.e. discussions on rules, strategy, or defense. Actually, most of the techniques discussed in this video revolve around only one main “se-cret.” But that one secret answers one big question, and that answer explains why all good bank pool players shoot most of their shots with a lot of speed. After divulging that “secret” early in the video, John goes on to demonstrate an assortment of one, two, and three rail banks that, to the casual observer, might look impossible to make. And it is the revelation of “the secret,” and the demonstration of those shots that makes this DVD something that aspir-ing Bank Pool champions will want to invest their time and money in.

On the downside, Mr. Brumback is typical of so many other professional players who are great at what they do, but not so great at explaining how they do it. All through this DVD, John combines broken and unfinished sen-tences with a lot of terminology that only hardcore pool players can under-stand. Along with that, he seems to be trying to teach through the process

of osmosis by shooting each shot over and over and over, rather than try-ing to make his points with some simple expla-nations of the physics involved in each of those shots.

All-in-all BANK POOL, Secrets Of A World Champion is a very good ac-quisition for any serious student of the Bank Pool discipline.

Sometimes an easy draw is just what a player needs to advance deep into a tournament. On the other hand, sometimes a tough draw is what someone needs to bring their “A game” to the table. That appeared to be the case for Preacher Ronn Rutan as he turned in a dominating performance to win his one pocket event at Kolbys on June 30th.

Ronn drew Lenny Marshall right out of the gate, and sent him to the one loss side 2-0. Next up for Ronn was Bernie Pettipiece and another 2-0 victory. The hot-seat match against Tucson’s Joe Watson was yet another 2-0 victory for Rutan.

After Eric Young eliminated Watson 2-0 on the one loss side, Young and Rutan faced off in the extended fi nal match.

Young immediately made his mark on the match by ending Rutan’s unbeaten streak with a nice 7 ball run and a 1-0 lead. That would be best Young would do on this day, as Rutan then took control of the match and won 3-1.

Ronn earned $190 for fi rst, while Young took home $100 for second.

You’re Never Too Old to LearnWhile attending the VNEA League Championship Na-tionals at Bally’s in Las Vegas in May, I saw many old friends. Of course I always visit Tom and Marty Ross-man for Dr. Cue’s pool exhibitions. Another friend of mine that I ran into was Jerry Briesath. Jerry has attended a few trick shot exhibitions that I have performed and has given me tips on how to improve certain skill shots.

This year Jerry watched me play a person I met in Tucson in 1975, Alf Tay-lor. We played nine ball under the Briesath rules. Basically theses rules are “produce at the table or go sit your butt in the chair if you miss a shot.” Ball in hand every time you miss, I love it. After beating Alf - who I had no chance of beating in 1975 - 5 to 1, Jerry said I looked really good at the table, but he had something he wanted to correct in my stroke. He asked if I had time now or something like that. I told him I had all the time he needs to help me with anything in my game. When Jerry talks I consider him E.F. Hutton and I listen.

Over a two day period, he corrected a fl aw in my stroke. I have worked to change my muscle memory and what a difference. I am pocketing balls so well now, it is a joke. My mental focus on the object ball is unbelievable now. I’ve played pool since 1968 and I have been teaching pool and performing Trick Shot Exhibitions since 1972, yes 40 years.

This is a testimonial for Jerrys instructing capabilities. He has broken down the fundamentals of playing pool better than anyone I know.

From the bottom of my heart. Thank you Jerry, I’m never too old to learn. Ken “Sarge” Aylesworth

Kitty’s recent swap of her 10 & Under Scotch event with her 7’s & Under Singles event might have been a blessing in disguise as a field of twenty players showed up on June 9th - most of them expecting to play in a 10 & Under event.

There were very few 7’s in attendance and most of those players were sent packing by midday.

On the winner’s side, Rick Bedore found himself facing Tammy Hamilton - a four rated player - in a full race to handicap. Tammy took Rick to the limit as the match went to hill-hill before Rick won the case game to take the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Dan Young was playing in one of this final events as a six rated player (he would be raised to a seven later in the month)

and making the most of it. After a loss in his first match, Dan had won five straight matches, including a 6-1 win over Lefty Larralde to make it into the money.

Next up for Young would be Ricky Jones, who had just eliminated Dennis Winkler one spot out of the money.

Dan came out strong in the match against Ricky and held an early 3-1 lead, but the wheels fell off after that and Ricky won five straight games to take the match 6-3 and send Dan home in 4th place.

In the semi-final match between Ricky and Tammy, the late hour - and possibly the idea of how close they were to the end of the event - took their toll on Tammy as she lost to Ricky 6-1.

This left Rick Bedore and Ricky Jones in a battle of the

Rick’s to determine the tournament winner.

While Jones had played well against Tammy, the match with Bedore was an uphill battle as Bedore raced out to a quick 3-0 lead. Jones battled back to within one rack at 2-3, but a scratch on the break, followed up by a 1-9 combo by Bedore took all of the wind out of Jones’ sails.

Jones would manage one more game in the match as Bedore won 6-3.

Final Payouts:

1st Rick Bedore $3152nd Ricky Jones $1603rd Tammy Hamilton $704th Dan Young $35

Davis Toothman Remembered at Kittys

Many members of the Arizona pool scene were affected by the recent and sud-den death of Davis Toothman, but Kitty’s owner Kitty Carroll was especially moved and it was no surprise that Kitty’s remembrance event on May 29th drew a packed house of players wanting to celebrate the man that Davis was.

Kitty put the event together on very short notice, but you wouldn’t have noticed with at least 150 people crammed into Kittys.

After Kitty struggled through a few words about Davis on the microphone, Davis’ girlfriend Cheryl brought the crowd to tears with a rendition of Patsy Cline’s “Walking After Midnight” to celebrate her and Davis’ late night walks.

The crowd had been writing their messages to Davis on balloons inside Kittys and they filed outside to let the balloons float to the heavens with their messages for Davis.

The night ended with a blind draw scotch doubles tournament that saw Burt Balancad & Dan Young go through the field undefeated. While the event was not a fundraiser, over $500 was raised for Davis’s family at the event.

Carlos & JR Win Kittys Scotch

Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event for June drew eighteen teams to com-pete on the freshly reclothed tables.

The team of Carlos DeSantiago & JR Camacho were the team to beat in this event as they went relatively untested to the hot-seat, which they won by the score of 7-3 over the team of Stephen Fluger & Andrew Rocha.

Maddy Alvarado & Don Stillings were cruising through the one loss side after an early loss and enjoying the fact that they were only racing to five while most other teams were going to seven.

Maddy & Don’s match with Stephen & Andrew would go to hill-hill (6-4), before it was won by Stephen & Andrew.

The final match was a true battle featuring four tie scores and four lead changes before Carlos & JR earned the 7-5 victory.

Carlos & JR split $660 in first place prize money, while Stephen & Andrew settled for $330. Maddy & Don earned $90 with no side pots and Daniel Ja-worowski & Tom Lee took home $135 for fourth place with side pots.

Let’s talk about “HANGERS”

By Jerry BriesathBCA Master Instructor

A ball hanging in the pocket is the easiest shot on the table to make, but one of the most difficult shots when playing position on the next ball.

Sometimes “hangers” are described as an amateur’s nightmare shot and a pro’s best friend.

How many times have you fired at a hanger at the far end of the table and the cue ball came screaming off the rail and then stopped dead after travel-ing about one foot when you were trying to get the cue ball back down to your end of the table? Well, don’t feel bad be-cause it has happened to every one of us.The most common problem with beginners and amateurs is hitting the object ball too full with severely reduces it’s speed when trying to return to the other end of the table, when a thin softer hit would easily

return the cue ball back to the other end of the table.

The reason the pros are so successful shooting hangers and getting position is that they are very accurate on the object ball, sometimes a very thin hit is required whereas the next hanger might require a half ball hit and the next a full hit.

Place a hanger in the corner pocket and the cue ball two diamonds away near the rail. Now, using a medium speed stroke, strike the cue ball above center and hit 90 percent of the object ball. Repeat the same shot and speed strik-ing the object ball with a 50 percent hit and then again with a 10 percent hit on the object ball and observe the direc-tion and speed of the cue ball after each shot.

This little exercise will help you improve your “hanger” game quickly. Good Luck

Young and Wilcox Take Kitty’s Scotch

Nineteen 15 & under Scotch Doubles teams came to Kitty’s ready to vie for over $1,300.00 in prize money and to help in celebrating July 4th on the last weekend of June.

The hot-seat match found Oscar Avila and BBQ pitted against Dan Young and Bill Wilcox. After a tense and exciting match, Dan and Bill found themselves in the hot seat.

Third place found Oscar and BBQ playing Harold Lyons and Laura. When the dust settled, Oscar and BBQ took 3rd and received $ 190.00 for their efforts

After an exciting day, the final match began between Dan & Bill and Harold & Laura. In the end, Harold and Laura took 2nd and went home with $ 360.00. Dan and Bill claimed 1st and received $ 790.00.

As always, Kitty and her staff provided a great venue and excellent service.

Carpenter Undefeated At DeliTwenty Two play-ers made their way to The Deli Sportsbar on June 2nd to compete in the weekly 9’s and un-der 8-ball tourna-ment.

The fi nal four on the winners side came down to Chris Carpenter beating Teresa Eibner and Andrew Rocha defeating Mari Si-monson.

This left Carpenter facing Rocha for the hot-seat, and that match went to Car-penter as he sent Rocha to the one loss side.

On the one loss side, Steve Morrow was on a tear as he eliminated Eibner and then Simonson to send Simonson to the rail one spot out of the money in third place.

Andrew Rocha was the next player to be eliminated by Morrow and Rocha settled for $10 in third place prize money.

The fi nals came down to Carpenter and a red-hot Morrow, but Morrow’s streak came to an end with his loss to Carpenter.

Carpenter collected $165 for fi rst, while Morrow took home $65 for second.

Claudia Morado Wins at The Deli What does a die-hard pool player do when they head off to a scotch doubles tour-nament on a Saturday afternoon and they don’t play as well as they had hoped to? Well, faced with that situation, Claudia Morado made the most of the situation and found another tournament to play in. On June 23rd, that tournament was the 9’s & under at The Deli Sportsbar.

Right off the bat, Claudia found herself facing another tough situation. Claudia, who had never cashed in the Deli event, drew tournament director (and frequent tournament winner) Chris Carpenter in the fi rst round. Carpenter had also ven-tured out to that same scotch doubles tournament earlier in the day and he too, hadn’t fared as well as he would have liked.

While Morado didn’t have the scotch tournament she had hoped for, she cor-rected that wrong by defeating Carpenter in the fi rst round and then going on to dominate the rest of the fi eld of twenty two players to not only cash, but win the event.

Morado collected $160 with the side pot for fi rst place, while Steven settled for $65 in second place prize money and Rod took home $10 for third place.

By David “The Scorpion” Fatum

Answers to Some Common Questions

Q: What is a good way to stay calm? I even sipped on an adult beverage to try and help the nerves; it still doesn’t help at times.

Scorpion: It is true that even the best players in the world have a few to help calm nerves and to some degree nerves are good as it lets you know you are alive. Now being nervous is BAD. So how do you stay calm? Well the answer is a lot harder then it seems... CON-TROL YOUR THOUGHTS. See, I have really worked on this over the last year or two. Everyone says “the game is 85% mental” yet most people spend 100% of their time on the 10% of the game- the actual throwing of the dart. The other 5%? LUCK. The first step is you practice at home to gain some confidence and raise your skill but you also need to be training your brain on what or what not to think about. I could write pages on this but the 50 cent version is this: If

you focus on the OUTCOME of the game versus your PERFORMANCE, your stress levels will be increased. What is crazy is most people think they can control winning when they can’t! You could be setting up to take a 12 darter out while the other guy bangs off a 9 darter, did you play bad? NO! Should you be happy about how you shot? YES! Did you win? NO! The old saying is “ignore the opponent and play the board” Easily said but harder done... I do this really well now and it makes your game much more consistent. Focus on your own game, delivery and controlling thoughts and you will, in the end, become more successful. If you go through my articles I am sure I have one that goes into more detail. The reason you get nervous playing doubles is you worry (needlessly) about your partner and letting them down but the truth is you are playing singles and every shot is COMPETELY INDEPENDENT of the shot you just threw and of the next one to come. Play in the moment of that one time at the board and do YOUR JOB. Follow through smoothly and focus on the action at hand...not what you feel you have to hit. It is impossi-

ble to “try” harder as no one ever tries to miss hence why I think it is stupid to say “sorry” to a partner... Put the right thoughts in your head, realize you won’t ever live off of darts (very very few do) and just play the game.

Q: I have a grip where I put the thumb across from the three fingers over the shaft, very similar to James Wade. I don’t have a classic grip. I noticed your grip; you let the shaft rest be-tween the thumb and index finger with the three fingers over the shaft. Should I change this? I feel very comfortable with my grip; just don’t know why I can’t hit the big 180’s.

Scorpion: Well this question actually ties into your first one a bit so let me start there. Why haven’t you hit a 180 yet? BECAUSE you think about hit-ting a 180 when you have the first two in there. Your brain goes “OH MY GOD I HAVE A CHANCE TO HIT MY FIRST 180!!” and the arm goes YANK!!! Try forgetting it is a 180 and realize what it REALLY is... 3 darts thrown smoothly into the target you were looking at. Hence “OUTCOME

vs PERFORMANCE” every shot means the same... yet peo-ple think that some shots are worth more then others. I of-ten reply to this statement “man I wired two darts at the out and I lost because of it” I ask “ did you go 180 180? 140 140 140? or did you throw a 60 45 41 etc?” The truth is you may feel like you lost because you missed the double but if your performance throughout the game was higher you would had 8 darts to throw at the double :) Ok now about your grip.... the truth is that anyone that says any one grip is better then another is just demonstrat-ing they have no idea about darts. The best grip is the one you like. PERIOD! Now your throw? Smoother and the least amount of moving parts the better!! When tension does creep into your game, every part that moves is one more segment that can go wrong. Keep your grip and just keep working on the basics.

A field of 44 players helped kick off the opening of Stinger’s new dart room on May 12th. The new room boasts fourteen dart boards, video games, electronic Juke Boxes and a separate bar for the dart fanatics.

The hot-seat in this one was taken in dominating fashion by the team of Kix Alcala & Andy Bates, who defeated Bobby Castillo & Elisa Barfield 2-0.

On the left side of the board were Scott Bielik & Randy Dube, who were still stinging from a loss to Kix and Andy in the winners side final four. Scott & Randy earned a hard fought 2-1 win over Bobby & Elisa to earn another shot at Kix & Andy in the finals.

Things didn’t go any better for Scott & Randy in the finals, as they lost to Kix & Andy 2-0 again and had to settle for second place.

Mike, what would be your sug-gestion for the younger players in darts?

First and foremost I would tell them to throw the stats out the window and play the game to win. Seems everyone now a days is more interested in their stats than winning the game. What a joke.

Many times at the end of a match, players are fi ghting to get to the board to see what they shot. Recently, I saw a young up and coming player shoot a good game, at the end when the stats showed up, he did a fi st pump,

Apparently he forgot they

lost the game. You should know how you shot based on wins and how you helped your team. I will take a 3.0with a win any day over a 5.0 loss.

Play your game and don’t get too high or too low. Act like you have been there before when you win and take aloss in stride and go after the next game.

Also, listen to the players who have done it for a long time and respect their knowledge. Most inArizona have played on the top level and done well. Use their help to make yourself a better player.

Next for young players is to learn thegame and the outs. Many a game has been won or lost merely based on who made the correct shot, either to take

the game out or set it up.

I see players shoot a bull on the last dart and leave their partner a 2 out, many times when they have a huge lead. That is suicide. They may hit it and win, but it is not at all correct un-less you’re playing freeze.

Don’t get caught up in one good night or one good game. Build on it and work to be consistent.

I believe that is the key to being suc-cessful. Lots of players can hit a big round or two, but the great ones hit all the time.

Lastly, I believe you need to respect the other players and the game. You can not gain respect without giving it fi rst.

These are just my thoughts and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

Bullshooters drew another full field of 16 players to their one pocket madness event on June 16th. Although the field was missing some of the usual one pocket suspects, the field still included such notables as Bernie Pettipiece, Tres Lane, Lenny Marshall, Rod Elliott and Eric Young.

A major story at this event was the play of Prescott’s Tom Schmitt. Schmitt scored wins over Bill Garrett and Sammy Martinez on his way to the match for the hot-seat.

To no one’s surprise, Tom’s opponent would be Bernie Pettipiece. Pettipiece had maneuvered through a mine’s field of opponents on the winners side with wins over Kane, Young and Elliott.

The match for the hot-seat saw Bernie giving Tom 10-6 on Tom’s break and 11-6 on Bernie’s break and that would be too much for Bernie to fade at that time as Tom won the match 2-0 to take the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Rod Elliott and Sammy Martinez were locked in a battle to make it into the money. The match was a long one, but when the dust settled, it was Elliott scoring the 2-0 victory.

Next up for Elliott would be a rematch with Pettipiece. The match saw Bernie giving Rod 10-7 and 11-7, but the first game of the match wouldn’t be determined by the score as Bernie scored the rare “three foul” win over Rod. The second game went by a little slower, but it was still Bernie with the win as he won the match 2-0.

The final match would be Bernie’s chance to avenge his loss to Tom and he would get that revenge, but it wouldn’t be easy. The race to three match saw Bernie never trail in the match, but Tom would knot the score at 1-1 and 2-2 before Bernie won the final game for the hill-hill victory.

Final Payouts:1st Bernie Pettipiece $2302nd Tom Schmitt $1503rd Rod Elliott $110

Bernie Wins One Pocket Madness

Bernie Pettipiece didn’t appear to have his A-game, but his B-Game was enough. Tom Schmitt took second place back to Prescott with him.

Ed & Ray Win at Groggys

Thirty Scotch Doubles teams came out to Groggys on June 2nd to pay tribute to Davis Toothman and do battle for over $1,500.00 in prize money.

The hot seat match found Ed Scott and Ray Sabin going up against Chris Ne-grin and Mike Luta. After a great match, Ed and Ray held the hot seat. After coming through the loser side, Bill Vanderwyest and Kevin Arco met Chris and Mike for 3rd place. Chris and Mike came away with 3rd and $110.00.

The final match found Bill and Kevin facing Ed and Ray. After a grueling match, Ed and Ray came away with 1st place and Bill and Kevin took 2nd. For their efforts, Bill and Kevin won $330.00, while Ed and Ray took home $ 920.00.

A special thanks goes out to Groggy’s, City Billiards, JJ, Tony and Staci, and Ebony for their efforts in providing donations to help the Toothman family.

As always, Leon and his staff provided a great venue, wonderful food and ex-cellent service.

June 16th was the first time Stingers held a 9 and under monthly tourna-ment. It was also the first time we did a staggered entry fee, in hopes it would accommo-date a wider range of skill levels. 30 players showed up to battle it out play-ing bar box 10 ball.

Rick Armbrust and Jason Polk decided to split 1st and 2nd after Jason beats Rick in the first set of the finals. Rick sat in the hot seat after making his way though opponents; Burt Balancad, Robin Clark, Sara Miller, Curtis Elifritz, and George Teyechea for the hot seat.

Jason won his 1st match against Jason Sweet, but lost his second match to George Teyechea. That started his journey though the one loss side. He made his way though JR Ascencion, Donald Mangahas, Sara Miller, Frank Alvarez, Curtis Elfritz, and Al Moreno to win the one loss side.

Jason continued on his hot streak and when faced with Rick, he was able to beat him 8-3 in the first set of the finals.. Rick had already secured the $30 winner take all since Jason did not enter it. The two decided to split rather than continue on playing after a full day.

1st Rick Armbrust $505 + $300 WTA1st Jason Polk $5053rd George Teyecha $2204th Al Moreno $140 5th Angel Paglia $505th Curtis Elfritz $50

As Always Jimmy and Jenelle would like to thank everyone who came out to support the tournament, we look forward to putting on the next one. Thank you to Stingers who continues to add money to our tournaments. See you all soon!
