Mulalo Maango inside the police van after the bail hearing at the Dzanani Magistrate's Court.

Members of the Dzanani 1 Taxi As-sociation were very happy with the magistrate’s decision to deny bail to two suspects accused of killing a taxi driver. Two of the three suspects who were allegedly involved in a taxi robbery in March this year where the driver was killed, applied for bail at the Dzanani Magistrate's Court.

During the bail hearing, court A of the Dzanani Magistrate's Court was packed to capacity, predominately by taxi driv-ers and owners. They were united in their sympathy for their slain driver, the 46-year-old Ndivhoniswani Mukosi, who was shot dead during the robbery by un-known men. The incident happened along the Witvlag road and his taxi was later found dumped at Maelula village.

Three suspects were arrested by the po-lice and charged with murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances. When one of the accused, Ndivhuwo Mutavhat-sindi (26) testified, he told the court that he would not plead guilty because he had not committed any offence, even though

he was at the scene. The court heard, however, that Mutavhatsindi had several pending cases and he had previously been convicted of theft, robbery and malicious damage to property, housebreaking and common assault. His pending cases in-clude arson, which he told the court he was only informed about when he was in custody.

The second bail applicant, Mulalo Maango (31), told the court that he should be granted bail because he knew nothing about the allegations he was accused of. “I was not at the place where the offence is alleged to have happened,” he said. Maango was previously convict-ed of theft and the possession of ammunition. His pending cases are related to a robbery that took place at Vuwani and the posses-sion of a firearm at Thohoyandou.

W/O Colbert Netshiavha, who is investigating the case, told the court that he would object to the release of the suspects. He said

family members of the victim were still immensely traumatised and they would not be happy to see the suspects roaming the streets.

The three accused, Mulalo Maango (31), Ndivhuwo Mutavhatsindi (26) and Khathutshelo Raedani (24), will appear again in the Dzanani Magistrate's Court when the trial starts on the 16th of this month.

Two taxi driver murder suspects denied bail

More than 30 pupils collapsed when the coffins of two of their friends and an adult were low-ered into their graves during a mass funeral at Tshavhal-ovhedzi on Saturday.

The three, who died after being run over by a speeding car, are Richard Munyai (39), Fhulufhelani Tshiuda (16) and Gudani Nenungwi (12).

The chairperson of the civic

association of Tshavhalovhedzi Village, Mr Thomas Mawela, said they are going to submit a request to the MEC for Roads and Transport, Lehlogonolo Masoga, to dispatch more traffic officials to the Tshavhalovhedzi road or to install speed bumps.

"The Department of Trans-port should also put pedestrian crossing marks and stop signs to avoid problems of motorists

knocking down people," said Mawela.

The MEC, Lehlogonolo Masoga, advised motorists to refrain from driving at excessive speeds and driving under the influence of alcohol.

He further appealed to all road users to obey all the rules of the road as this will go a long way in reducing carnage on the roads.

Victims of vehicle accident buried (From page 1)They also revealed that they are living in fear

in their own home and within the community they are part of. They then explained how, when they were in prison, they received a message from their family that the angry community had warned the family never to visit them in prison. “We had such a painful experience in prison because we never knew what would happen to our loved ones out there, because of our being implicated in the case and the community who threatened them always,” Shadrack stated.

He added that his partner and child had since left, after they had realised that their safety was at stake. “I don't even know where they are,” he says. “This murder case has messed up my whole life.”

Shadrack maintains that his brother Meshack, Meshack Mkhwanadzi and he were arrested after Reynie Abraal said that they were his friends. “We think they were torturing him and he just mentioned our names,” he explained.

He said that he failed to understand the reason why the court had to keep him in custody for 14 months before they eventually dropped the charges against him. “I feel that the court failed to do their job properly and to act on time, when they kept me in jail for a long time, and that for nothing,” he complained.

Meshack's shack was demolished after the en-raged community had ordered his mother to scrap it. “I am left with nothing, and I have got no place to stay,” he worried. “I am now suffering because of the police, who wrongfully arrested me.”

The Malange brothers' guardian and grand-mother, Vho-Tshinakaho Malange, says that there were some people who were spreading a rumour in the village that the court had set her grandsons free because she had supplied the twins with a strong muti which had stupefied the minds of the

prosecution authority and the magistrate. “I don't like what these people are alleging. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth,” she spoke out in a very pained voice. "Some say I am living with the killers under the same roof. This is unfair; who am I to dismiss the court's ruling that my grandsons are innocent?"

“There are rascals who prowl the village in the night, assaulting and mugging people. The next morning, we hear that it's my grandsons who are terrorising the community. Shadrack and Meshack are the scapegoats of the village.”

The state withdrew the charges against

“Arrest was a painful experience”

Mkhwanadzi, Malange and Malange on the basis that investiga-tions could not link them to the crime. All attempts to reach Me-shack Mkhwanadzi at his place of safety were fruitless. The claimants’ lawyer, Mr Desmond Mphaphuli, confirmed that they have issued a letter of demand against the Minister of Safety and Security for the unlawful detention and malicious arrest of the three acquitted men. “We issued a further claim against the NPA for malicious prosecu-tion and defamation of character,” said Mpha-phuli.

“We have instituted a claim of R 5 million per person.”

Man killed, seven passengers injured when bus overturns

SRPA will pay municipality R5 million

One passenger was killed and seven sustained injuries when the driver of a bus allegedly lost control and it overturned at Levubu on Tuesday.

The City to City bus was travelling from Tho-hoyandou to Gauteng when the accident occurred. Most of the injured were taken to the Tshilidzini Hospital for treatment.

Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Muk-hola said that the police were still investigating the cause of the accident. He said that they had registered a case of reckless driving, following the incident.

He added that the police were looking into the possibility that the driver of the bus might have been tired.

The deceased is Mr Gibson Mudau (60) from Ha-Mashau Thondoni, who passed away in the Tshilidzini Hospital on Wednesday morning.

One of the accident victims, Mr Mulalo Tshi-kovhi of Thohoyandou Block G, described what happened when approached by Limpopo Mirror. “We heard a big bang and then we realised that the bus had overturned. It rolled several times and some of the passengers were thrown out of the bus,” he said. “There was a huge cloud of dust and we could not even see what was happening. I strongly believe that we were saved by the grace of God.”

He suffered minor injuries to his head and a fractured left foot.

“This is the most horrible experience of my life,” he added.

An eyewitness, David Musaile, said he heard a loud banging sound before the accident happened. “I was standing next to the road, when I suddenly heard that sound. I realised that the bus could over-turn and it was travelling at high speed. It rolled several times,” he added.

Makhado Mayor Cllr David Mutavhatsindi said they were shocked to learn of the accident. He said the government was worried about the increasing number of accidents.

“This is a serious concern as more innocent lives are lost on our roads.”

After withholding basic rates and charges for the past five years as part of their dispute with the Makhado Municipal-ity, the Soutpansberg Rate-payers Association (SRPA) received a mandate from their members to pay approximately R5 million over to the munic-ipality.

“There are other avenues to ensure an improvement in service delivery.” This was the assur-ance given by Ms Inga Gilfillan, chairperson of the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association, during the SRPA’s annual general meet-ing on 29 July.

With reference to the SRPA’s decision to pay over the money, the Makhado Municipality had committed themselves to writing off the interest accumulated over the five years on the accounts of the SRPA members. They have also agreed to investigate each individual account to ascertain in which cases the adjustment fees charged had been justified and in which not. According to the outcome of their investigation, the adjustment fees on some accounts might be written off. The process may take about two months, after which the SRPA will receive the correct amount

to pay over.Mr Solly Maano, vice-chair-

person of the SRPA, said that paying over the money would indeed be a win-win situation, reiterating the sentiment of a previous speaker, Mr Frans van der Merwe. Van der Merwe also said that the quality of the service delivery had improved and that this was the original intent of the dispute.

Should individual SRPA mem-bers decide not to pay their indi-vidual accounts over, they would be liable for their own legal costs. In this regard, Mr Phillip Mosina said that it was not beneficial for especially older citizens to have court cases hanging over their heads. The majority of the mem-bers at the meeting were more senior. As stated in the judgement of the Rademan-Moqhaka case and other relevant court cases, the municipality may consolidate different items on the municipal account and the customer cannot specify that the payment is for a certain item. Mr André Prinsloo, outgoing treasurer of the SRPA, said that taxpayers therefore no longer had legal grounds to withhold money.

The SRPA members decided that the association will contin-

ue as normal but decrease the commission from 5% to 3%. That would be to keep the office and salaries going, as well as the attorney’s administration fees. The members will still pay their monthly accounts at Van Heerden and Rudolph attorneys. The benefit for the members will be that the SRPA manager will be available to sort out their individual problems and contact the relevant municipal officials on their behalf. That has been a relief for many, especially senior citizens and businessmen, who have difficulty or no time to stand in queues or to be referred from pillar to post. In her chairperson’s report, Gilfillan mentioned that out of more than 300 letters writ-ten to the Makhado Municipality, only 16 written answers had been received. “The definition of service delivery is not clear enough,” Gilfillan said. She also mentioned a service delivery agreement document that the National Taxpayers Union is working on.

Ms Jana Smith thanked Gil-fillan for her hard work as chair-person, the way in which she ac-quainted herself with the relevant legislation and her heart-and-soul commitment to the town.

Boy drowns in well

Laptops for deserving Univen students

A two-year-old boy from Mabhikwa village outside Beit Bridge drowned after falling into a well, while his mother was fetching water, the police have said.

Police spokesperson A/Insp Eglon Nkala said the incident occurred last Friday.

“Around 10:00, the victim’s mother, Lorraine Mpofu (20), went to fetch water with her two-year-old boy, Bekithemba Ndlovu,at the borehole. She left the child to play unattended, while she went home with some water,” said Nkala. He said when she came back to fetch more water, the boy had drowned in a nearby well.

“The police attended the scene and a postmortem was waived. No foul play is suspected as investiga-tions have been concluded,” said Nkala.

He advised parents to desist from leaving infants to play alone without supervision and discouraged the public from letting children play near water sources

The relationship between Dell and Univen, which started in 2002, continues to blossom as Dell continues to assist deserv-ing disadvantaged students through bursaries and academ-ic assistance tools.

During a recent function, the company handed over laptops to fi ve students, which are given to assist them in their teaching, learning and research.

The official handover was held at the university’s council chambers.

The benefi ciaries are holders of full bursaries which cover their

tuition, books, accommodation and their welfare. To date, Dell has already invested personal computers and bursaries to the total value of R2.67 million.

The new registrar of Univ-en, Prof Edward Nesamvuni, urged the company to continue supporting the students and the university.

He said they were happy that the company continued to support functional laboratories at the university.

Univen SRC President Mr Andisani Mathelemusa said it was their wish that all students

could have laptops to assist them in their work. He thanked Dell for the good work they are doing for the students.

Ms Chipo Msimanga, an ac-counts executive at Dell, said they appreciated the relationship they had with Univen.

“We are living in a digital world, and that is the reason why we are equipping students with laptops. We want them to apply themselves in this digital world and to be able to use social networks, do their lessons and submit their assignments on time while using their laptops.”

Staff from Air Force Base Makhado embarked on a 67-minute project in honour of Madiba on 18 July. At least 20 projects were identifi ed this year and staff spent their time handing out food parcels, clothes and blankets. They also fi xed potholes, cleaned certain areas and visited the needy to show their support. The benefi ciaries of the day included the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, Kutama Clinic, Rivoni Society for the Blind in Elim and the Razwimisani Special School in Ravele. In the photo, General Schalk van Heerden (third from right) watches as food parcels get delivered to the Rivoni Society for the Blind in Elim.

Action needed to curb FMDThe Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has urged the Depart-ment of Agriculture under the tenure of the new MEC, Ms Rosina Semenya, to assist all the farmers around Phalaborwa to vaccinate their animals to combat further outbreaks of foot-and-mouth dis-ease (FMD) in other parts of the province.

The outbreak of the disease in Phalaborwa was confirmed by the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries last week and, said DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle in a press release, “will definitely have a huge impact on our economy, especially within the farm-ing and hunting industry.” It occurred in a communal grazing area and is

located in South Africa’s FMD pro-tection zone. Smalle said the DA was of the view that not all the farmers could vaccinate their animals at this stage, therefore it was of paramount importance for the department to en-sure that it intervened with immediate effect. “The vaccination programme must be rolled out throughout the province to prevent further spread. The department must also arrange workshops that will make all the farmers understand the importance of vaccination,” said Smalle.

The DA urged the department to work closely with the national depart-ment to set up buffer zones around the area speedily to control the movement of animals to ensure that the outbreak does not affect the export industry.

No toilets for Lukau Primary One of the oldest primary schools in Limpopo, Lukau Primary, does not have toilets.

Pupils at the school, which was established in 1914, risk their lives by using open pit toilets.

The principal, Tshifhiwa Netsh-isaulu, says “the health of educators is at stake as they are exposed to the strong smell coming from the old pit toilets.”

The school has 368 learners and 12 teachers. “This situation is dis-turbing our school programme as we must also monitor every child who goes to the toilet. We are forced to monitor them, because some might fall into the open pit because they are very small.”

Netshisaulu, who was also a pupil at the school in 1970, says they alert-ed officials from the department who came to inspect the school two years ago about the problem, but they had no solution.

Another teacher, who chose to remain anonymous, says the situa-tion at the school is also affecting the enrolment. “We have a very low registration here. Parents avoid sending their children because of the appalling situation,” says the teacher. Approached for comment, the spokesperson for the Department of Education, Pat Kgomo, said he was going to investigate and find out why there were no proper toilets at the school.

The Makhado cluster police, led by their newly appointed commander, Brig Alex Seopa, took part in various charitable events to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday a fortnight ago. Police members from seven police stations in the Makhado cluster contributed their 67 minutes by cleaning Dzanani Township, the shopping complex, the local magistrate’s court and a local clinic. They were joined by members of the community, street hawkers, bank tellers and members of the local community policing forum. Photographed at the Mphephu police station are Colonel Leonard Luvhengo (left), commander at the station, and Brig Seopa (third from left) with some of the helpers.

The Makhado Municipality recently started to renovate the bus parking at the OK taxi rank. The parking area was badly damaged by rain earlier this year.

A fortnight ago, the Ravele traditional council and members of the Mauluma community braced the cold weather and did their part in honour of Mr Nelson Mandela. The community cleaned the crèche (Nndwa-ya-Mionwa), planted trees and cleaned the yard in which the crèche is situated. Highlighting the theme of this year, which put emphasis on food security, shelter and literacy, members of the community spent their time cooking food, reading books and narrating Mandela’s legacy to the children.

Limpopo businessman Mr Calvin Mutwanamba recently donated school uniforms and shoes to needy pupils from the Humbulani High School. From left to right in our photo are Takalani Tshikwela, Eunice Masindi, Mpho Mabala and Frans Nempheni.

Mr Mutwanamba also donated uniforms and shoes to Thingahangwi Rambelani, Thabelo Ragwala and Ndiafhi Ragwala from Frank Ravele High School in Venda.

Department warns of job scam

Young Tshifhiwa needs help

The Department of Health in Lim-popo has warned members of the public about a job scam by certain culprits allegedly offering employ-ment at Mankweng Hospital and the provincial head office.

Provincial spokesperson Ms Si-nenhlanhla Gumede states in a media release that the department received reports of the scam through unem-ployed individuals from Mankweng and Polokwane, saying that they were being asked to pay different amounts, starting from R1 000, which were to be deposited through Shoprite Money

Send in exchange for employment.“The department would like to

distance itself from any individual or advert that asks money from unsus-pecting job seekers in exchange for employment. If and when the depart-ment has to fill vacancies, posts will be advertised and selections made from the applications received,” said Gumede.

She warned the public to be aware of such culprits and encouraged those who had already become victims of the scam to report the matter to the police as soon as possible.

Tshifhiwa Vhengani (22) of Tshio-zwi ’s face is deformed by a huge lump, which causes him such pain that he cannot sleep at night.

His life turned into misery when the abnormal lump developed in 2009. It started as a pimple and is growing on a daily basis.

He said he went for treatment at both the Louis Trichardt Memorial and Polokwane provin-cial hospital on several occasions, but to no avail. He added that he was often mocked by fellow community members, who called him names because of the lump on his face.

According to him, no medical practitioner or traditional healer he visited could define his problem.

He said he even went to several medical cen-tres, including special-ists, but nobody could help him.

According to his grandmother, Tshinaka-ho Nembulu, they con-sulted hospitals, doc-tors, pastors and even a sangoma, but nothing has changed. “My son

doesn’t want to go out and play with others any more. I decided to take him to Limpopo Mirror, thinking that there may be other good Samaritans who can help,” she says. “I am appealing to Mirror readers to assist my grandson, so that he can get tertiary education,” she said.

People can phone them on 076 900 4378 or 072 179 7042.

Tshifhiwa Vhengani’s face is deformed by a huge lump.

The police at Tshaulu are appealing for the community to help them in tracing the whereabouts of Ms Rolivhuwa Mathoma of Lambani village. Mathoma (21) went missing in February this year. It is said the girl´s mother was at church at the time of her dissappearance and she did not inform anybody of where she was going. It was at first rumoured that she was at Tshifudi, but a search of the area revealed nothing. Some claimed to have seen her in Thohoyandou. Those with information can phone the police at Tshaulu on 015 978 4000 or the station´s spokesperson, W/O Mphoshomali, at 072 968 8432.

“Stop ships to transport live animals”

Contractor jailed for attempted smuggling

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) is calling for public support for their campaign to stop the outmoded, unac-ceptable and cruel practice of exporting live animals by sea for barbaric slaughter.

“The NSPCA has opposed this practice, which was high-lighted on two occasions on the MNet actuality programme Carte Blanche when stark footage of the harsh reality and the suffer-ing of animals was broadcast, on both occasions to a public outcry,” the NSPCA says in a press release. They say that public support is required to strengthen their stance, which is aimed at lobbying the support

of the Department of Tourism, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), as well as Border Control and other relevant authorities, to stop this practice.

“There are alternatives. Ex-porting meat rather than live animals is preferable,” says the NSPCA.

Members of the public are asked to follow the links below and to sign up to show support as well as share the links http://goo.gl/sKjqH. The link to the website page is http://www.nspca.co.za/Page/30522/Ships-of-Shame. Each “signature” sends a per-sonalised e-mail message to the representatives in authority.

“Information has been re-ceived that a ship is due to be loaded with cattle in August 2013, destined for Mauritius. We call upon all compassionate people to make your voices heard. Our aim is to prevent the ship from docking and export permits from being signed,” says the NSPCA. The NSPCA openly states that criminal charges will be laid against any veterinari-an, whether state-appointed or otherwise, who signs the export permits.

To further support the NSPCA in its initiative, send an SMS to 38018 with the words ‘STOP SHIPS’. Each SMS is charged at R10.

A 32-year-old Zimbabwean cross-border bus conductor was sentenced to an effective two years in jail for trying to assist 11 illegal immigrants to cross into South Africa through the Beit Bridge border post.

The border jumpers were trav-elling from Harare to Johannes-burg aboard the cross-border bus.

Elsey Nkenesa of Harare was convicted on his own plea of guilty to a charge of contravening a section of the Immigration Act

by local magistrate Miss Gloria Takundwa on Friday. The court was told that on 10 July, Nkenesa arrived at the Beit Bridge border post aboard a South African-reg-istered cross-border bus with 11 undocumented immigrants.

While at the border post, Nke-nesa tried to assist the undocu-mented immigrants to cross into South Africa illegally after charg-ing them R150 each. The offence came to light when the bus was intercepted by police detectives

who were manning the exit gate and they discovered that the 11 passengers were undocumented during their routine checks.

During interrogations it was established that they had paid a total of R1 265 to Nkenesa, so that he could facilitate their illegal passage into the country.

Nkenesa was searched, leading to the recovery of R1 150, and he was subsequently arrested. The border jumpers were also arrested and fi ned US$20 each.

Legendary musician finally releases his first full albumIt took a legendary Tshivenda musician 55 years before he could finally release a full-length album of his own, to which he could claim copyright.

April Samuel Ramufhi (72) is one of many artists who, many years ago, recorded one or two tracks with the old Radio Venda in Polokwane for airplay. The problem with the whole process was that an artist was merely given a single copy of the single or two tracks to play for family and friends. “I couldn’t even earn money from my work,” recalls Ramufhi. He says that he recorded about 35 songs through the decades at Radio Venda. His contemporaries were Solomon Mposa and Albert Mundalamo. “The positive side of things is that, even today, the now Phala Phala FM still plays the golden songs which we created many years ago,” he says. Ra-

mufhi’s first album, Tshanda tshi a levha, which came out a fortnight ago, comprises 13 songs. Eight songs are remakes of his old, classical songs such as Bombompani, Nyamuladelo and Kondelelani, while the other five tracks are completely new.The project was done at Balcan Sikhwari’s Ballitainment Media at Ha-Ravele village. Here, at the studio, is the place where young Ishmael ‘new Breed’ Rammbwa worked tirelessly with Ramufhi. “Vho-Ramufhi is already a leg-end and anyone who decides to produce his work should know that they are treading in a shallow area,” said new Breed. “You must provide the sounds which will match his quality voice or else you may end up compromising such a great talent.” Ramufhi is happy about his new project and adds that Ballitainment Media has resurrected his once-dead hope

of seeing himself holding a full-length album during his lifetime. “My music encourages people to work hard,” he says.

Tshanda tshi a levha is contin-uing to receive massive response from the people who have known Ramufhi’s music for all these years but had no idea where to find his music, apart from listen-ing to radio stations. “Vho-April Ramufhi’s music is a must-have and I cannot wait to get his new album,” said Gladys Mulaudzi (51) in the streets of Makhado.

Ramufhi lives at Muraleni village in the Sinthumule area. When he is not busy feeding his pig and three piglets, he normally walks the streets of Makhado town, strumming his guitar.

Tshanda tshi a levha is avail-able from selected music stores, but those who find it difficult to access his music can call 071 193 4129 or 072 853 0317.

Vho-April Samuel Ramufhi is a happy man after releasing his first album at the age of 72.

Debut album for Patience Ntuli Afro-gospel artist Patience Ntuli from Mal-amulele is receiving a lot of attention with her debut album, Khanimamba.

Although she is new to the industry, Patience makes music that soothes the soul, is easy to dance to and aims to introduce people to Christ, by offering messages of hope. She writes and composes her own music.

Patience started singing in church in 1988 and continued singing at university. Her love for music did not stand in the way of her studies. She completed a B Com in cost accounting, a university education diploma, an honours degree in cost accounting, a masters in business administration and a higher diploma in cost and management accounting.

She grew up listening to famous musicians likes Rebecca Malope and Joyous Celebration, and she said she drew inspiration from them.

“Recording the album was not easy,” said Ntuli. Despite having plenty of songs readily available, she had to fund the project herself. In order to enhance her writing and composition skills, she took piano lessons. She composes songs in Xitsonga, Tshivenda and Sepedi, and the 19-track album includes different styles, including reggae, Nigerian and kwasa-kwasa rhythms.

She is a devoted Christian, who ministers at Word of Life Bible Church. She is also a worship team leader.

The local police issued a certificate of appreciation to Mr Amie Chhaya for his participation in the fight against crime. The certificate came in response to his donation of maize meal during the SAPS crime awareness campaign recently held in Tshikota. The certificate was also backed up by an official letter of appreciation from the local community policing board.

The chairperson of the SGB, Mr Tshimangadzo Kutama, looks at the broken security door.

Several computers stolen at schoolThugs broke into Khogonyane Primary School and stole computers last Thursday.

After shutting down the school for three months, while demanding proper classrooms, the schools resumed their classes on 15 July. This came after the Department of Education had delivered 10 mobile classes. The academic programme was disrupted because the pupils had also abandoned writing their mid-year examinations.

Within ten days after the school had resumed classes, thieves stole the computers.

The chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Tshimnagdzo Kutama, said the school belonged to the community and they must respect their property because vandalizing and stealing at the school would hinder progress in the Kutama area. “We need our children to enjoy education in good classroom conditions,” Kutama added.

Apart from the computers, the thieves also stole other electrical appliances.

Mr Kenny Mathivha

Kenny Mathivha the new spokesperson for Limpopo’s premierA well-known former radio jour-nalist and public relations officer, Mr Kenny Mathivha, was recently appointed as the spokesperson of the premier of Limpopo.

He was a scholar at Mphaphuli High during the 1976 uprisings and, during that time, he learnt a lot of the activists of the time. After passing matric in 1979, he could not proceed to university, but taught English for a year at Mukula Secondary School. He managed to secure a scholarship to study public administration at the University of the North, an institution that was home to many activists.

In 1982, he became the art edi-tor of Turflux Magazine, a student magazine at the university. After

the Tiro Day protest and the closing down of the university, Mathivha was expelled, with many other students.

He went on to become a journalist and a correspondent of the South Af-rican Press Association. When Radio Thohoyandou was formed, he started to work there.

He became a freelance journalist for the BBC World Service in Trans-vaal. After the unbanning of political organisations in South Africa, he was given a scholarship by the ANC to study journalism in America in 1991. He studied at Jackson State University in Mississippi and came back in 1993.

The same year, he joined the BBC World Service in London as a jour-

nalist and producer. He worked in East and West Africa. He covered stories from the great lakes in 1994 in Rwanda and Burundi, Uganda and Ethiopia.

In 1995, he joined the political desk of the SABC in Cape Town. He covered mainly President Nelson Mandela’s activities and travelled the world with him.

During that time, he visited Bot-swana, Lesotho, Germany, Mozam-bique, Angola, the USA, Cuba and several other countries.

In 1988, he was appointed as spokesperson for Adv Ngoako Ramat-lhodi, the Premier of Limpopo. He left in 2000 and joined the SABS as its first black spokesperson. In 2004, he

came back and joined the Limpopo Legislature as its spokesperson. In 2010, he became the spokesperson for the Department of Agriculture.

Tshakhuma KK Revolution win Amos Charity Shield

There is still no closure for the family of the woman who was killed in an alleged muti murder.

The remains of the 36-year-old Rumbidzai Manyere, who was allegedly butchered and killed by Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo (38), have not yet been released to her family for burial. This shocking revelation was made by family and friends of Manyere outside the Louis Trichardt Mag-istrate’s Court last Friday after Tshikhudo’s appearance.

Tshikhudo is accused of

Tshakhuma KK Revolution are the champions of the Amos Charity Shield Soccer Tournament. They beat Maweja Takers FC 3-1 in the fi nal at the University of Venda Stadium on Sunday.

Revolution were presented with R5 000, a fl oating trophy and gold medals during a ceremony that was held at the stadium shortly after the fi nal. Maweja Takers were given R2 500 and silver medals during the ceremony. Tshakhuma RO United received the third prize of R1 000 and bronze medals.

A striker of Maweja Takers, Mukandangalwo Ramunana, was presented with the top-goal-scor-er award. He scored two goals in the tournament and received a trophy. The other recipients of the individual awards were Rudzani Mmbengeni of KK Revolution (best goalkeeper and player of the tournament) and Madilonga Mukwevho of Univen FC (most disciplined player).

A special award was presented to a player of Tshakhuma Yebo Yes United FC, Maboho Nevari. He received R150, a gold medal and a pair of soccer boots. During the ceremony, a representative from the sponsors, Ms Masha Thabela, indicated that the tournament was staged as a way to honour her late

Manyere’s murder after his arrest on 5 April at Elti Café in Eltivillas, when he allegedly tried to rob a business by using a severed human arm. The following day, he led the Makha-do police to the place where the murdered Manyere’s body was found. Manyere’s right arm, both eyes and her private parts had been cut off. Her body it-self was in an advanced stage of decomposition.

Dur ing h is b r ie f court appearance last Friday, Tshikhudo was also charged with the rape of another wom-an. According to in-formation supplied by the police, the victim laid the charge against

Tshikhudo after she had seen a picture of him in several local newspapers after his arrest.

The State prosecutor also informed the court that there were several other cases pend-ing against Tshikhudo that had to be centralized to one court. These cases include, among oth-ers, housebreaking and assault charges.

The prosecutor also asked for a postponement because a DNA report was still outstanding.

Outside the courtroom, some of the local Zimbabwean com-

munity showed their support by wearing green T-shirts. Among them was Manyere’s younger sister from Zimbabwe. She was heartbroken about having to return to her homeland without her sister’s body.

According to the local police, Manyere’s body cannot be re-leased before DNA testing on her remains has been completed.

Tshikhudo’s case was post-poned until 26 August. He will remain in custody as he was already denied bail during a pre-vious court appearance.

The University of Venda recently took part in the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Netball Championship at the University of Pretoria. Thirty-six institutions from around the country took part in the tournament. In our photo, Univen´s Dakalo Mugwena is attacking with the ball, with her teammate, Boitumelo Thobejane, behind her. Photo supplied

father, Mr Lufuno Amos Thabela. According to her, the deceased was a community builder and successful businessman and he passed away in 2006.

Ms Thabela revealed that they had entered into a 12-year contract with the organisers, saying the sponsor-ship would increase with time. Four teams, Tshakhuma KK Revo-lution, Tshakhuma RO United, Univen FC and Maweja Takers FC, took part in the tournament.

The individual award winners pose for a photo with the dignitaries during the ceremony.

Church donates house to poor familyThe Calvary Christian Church, under the lead-ership of Dr Maxwell Masakona, donated a new house to Gogo aMukatshelwa Maphauphau of Khumbe a fortnight ago.

Her house burnt down last year, and she had to survive without a decent roof over her head and with five grandchildren staying with her.

When presenting the four-roomed house to her, Masakona encouraged other community members to contribute to the welfare of the poor, to uplift the standard of life in this country. “I was very touched by the family’s poor living conditions. We wanted to restore the dignity of the Maphauphau family,’ he added.

Mukatshelwa Maphauphau could not hold back tears of joy as Masakona opened the door, mark-ing the official opening of the house. She thanked Masakona and the church for the good work they did. Vhembe district Cllr Rapson Rambuwani said the municipality welcomed the partnership that had built the house. “Government on its own cannot do it, but if other stakeholders get involved and emulate what Dr Masakona has done, a lot can be achieved,” he said.

“Treat mental illness patients with care”The nurses at Tshiungani clinic and some clinics around the Ha-Rammbuda Tribal Authority in Mutale were urged to treat patients suffer-ing from mental illness with dignity and with the utmost care, despite the challenges of shortages of medication and staff.

“We want nurses to assist mentally ill patients, so that they may be cured and go back to their communities. Hospitals or clinics are not home, and we urge communities to incorporate mentally ill patients back into the communities when they are cured,” said Dr Rachael Mapon-

ya, senior manager dealing with mental illness in the Department of Health and Social Devel-opment.

She was speaking at the clinic outside Mutale during the Rammbuda Mental Illness Day. The day is the brainchild of Thovhele Azwihangwisi Rammbuda. It is his wish that residents of the area should be aware of their health status and treat people suffering from men-tal illness with dignity and care.

Thovhele Azwihangwisi Rammbuda said communities who live with mentally ill peo-ple must care for them as they are also human beings. “We

found that, in the past, mentally ill patients were locked away and tied up inside houses while other people were enjoying themselves outside." A mental-ly ill patient who receives his medication at the Tshiungani Clinic, Mr Oscar Magedane, urged the government to give clinics medication in time and also to build a place where they can learn skills while receiving medication.

Magedane has just completed a novel, which he want to be published and read in schools. The novel is called Pfunzo ndi mapfura na lebula, which means education is the key to success.

Residents of R and K Section in Maniini outside Thohoyandou who owe the Thulamela munic-ipality more than R8 million through debts incurred over the years for sites, are optimis-tic that the dialogue they are having with the municipality could come out in their favour.

Residents have been in con-sultation with the municipality since last month as a way to find a lasting solution how the matter could best be resolved.

The residents, who had been waiting with anticipation, were disappointed when officials from the municipality postponed a report-back meeting scheduled to have taken place a fortnight ago.

Last week, during a meeting held on Sunday at the village, Thulamela Chief Whip Cllr

Wilson Mutoti, who was accom-panied by the ward councillor, Cllr Maria Ramanala, and Mr Maluleke, the manager of plan-ning, addressed residents who had waited for them the previous weekend.

During the meeting, Mutoti told them that the matter was receiving urgent attention with the relevant structures of the municipality.

"As we promised when we left during the previous meeting, we are still seeking ways on how we could best resolve this mat-ter. This would need maximum cooperation between us as mu-nicipality and you the residents. We are all agreed that we have a mountain to climb ahead of us and we need to work together to solve this," said Mutoti.

Mr Hlengani Maluleke, senior manager planning and develop-ment at Thulamela, said many communities in Thulamela were facing the same predicament.

The local civic leader, Mr Lon-dani Makhuvha, said residents were happy about the progress that had been made so far. "There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are very happy about the working relationship we have established with the municipal-ity, which gives us hope that an amicable solution will be reached between us and the municipality. We just hope that this matter will be resolved soon and put to rest forever.

People are waiting with an-ticipation and we hope the best will come out of these meetings," he said. Mutual Bank.Reg.No. 1051. Authorised financial services and credit provider.

Mpembe honours Makhado SAPS clusterThe provincial commissioner of police, Gen Simon Mpem-be, honoured police officers serving within the Makhado SAPS cluster during an event that was held at the Makhado Correctional Centre a fort-night ago.

This comes after the Makha-do cluster has demonstrated “tireless dedication towards the department” through exception-al arrests and breakthroughs in some hard cases, said Gen Mpembe.

“I am affixing my signature on all these certificates for your outstanding service and you must know by now that my signature is expensive,” said Mpembe.

“I don't just sign anything; I am in fact reminding you of the vision of the SAPS: It is to en-sure safety and security within

society.”He further told the police that

they should always consider all criminals as enemies of society. “You must eliminate criminals out of the community and place them in custody,” he ordered.

In honouring the Makhado SAPS cluster, which encom-passes police stations such as Mphephu, Mara, Tshitale, Wa-terval, Tshilwavhusiku, Levubu and Waterpoort, Mpembe said it was very painful and uninspir-ing to work under a commander who showed neither apprecia-tion nor acknowledgment for the work of a dedicated and hardworking official.

He then made an honorary mention of the three police of-ficials from the Tshilwavhusiku police station for their break-through in arresting four sus-pects who were terrorising the

Vhembe district by stealing plasma television sets and fer-rying these to Zimbabwe. Two of the officials are D/Const Lawrence Manngo and D/Const Nkhangweni Mulaudzi.

“The journey has begun. I urge you to continue glorifying God by creating a crime-free country. Never let your good work be spoilt by corruption. Never accept bribes from crim-inals. You have already started changing the face of Limpopo for the better,” he said.

Shortly before the event of the day, the commissioner paid a surprise visit to the Waterval police station to monitor the officials' daily activities. “They have got the challenge of a lack of vehicles, just like the Makhado police station,” he said and promised to look into the problem.

The newly elected chairperson of the Mhingaville civic organisation, Mr Lino Simango (centre, front) promises to make the village free from crime. He is photographed with the newly elected committee while Vhembe treasurer, Mr Simon Manzere (left), headman Benneth Jamatani, Cllr Aardane Chauke and Sanco Vhembe regional chairperson Ms Magdalene Netshiavha (far right) look on.

The newly elected chairperson of the South African Civic Organisation (Sanco) in Mhin-g aville said delivering better services to his communities would be his top priority.

Mr Lino Simango received an overwhelming victory against Mr Abel Chauke during the election and launching of the Mhingaville Sanco at the headman’s kraal on Saturday.

More than 130 communi-ty members from Mhingaville joined the organisation on Satur-day, after attending a workshop about the work of the organisa-tion and how to be responsible citizens.

“Sanco in the communities is the watchdog of the imple-mentation of service delivery and assisting to implement the integrated development plan in the communities. We also have to check the issue of progress on some community projects and working with councillors and tra-ditional leaders,” said Simango.

The regional chairperson of Sanco in Vhembe, Ms Magdaline Netshiavha, described a good working relationship between the newly elected committee, the tra-ditional leader and the councillor as the most important factor in delivering better services to the communities.

“We don’t want Sanco to fight with councillors and traditional leaders."

Headman Benneth Jambatani welcomed the new committee and said it would help to root out the high crime rate. “We hope that Mhingaville will be a free-crime zone and even visitors must feel free to visit.”

The new Mhingaville Sanco branch committee members are: Mr Lino Simango (chairperson), Mr Abel Chauke (deputy chair-person), Mr Vincent Chauke (secretary), Ms Florence Chauke (deputy secretary), Ms Holland Mita (treasurer) and Mr John Chauke (organising secretary).

Hard-earned victory for Tshakhuma RO UnitedIn their losers’ final match in the Amos Charity Shield Soccer Tournament at the University of Venda Stadium on Sunday, Tshakhuma RO United beat Univen FC 7-6 to finish in the third place of the competition.

The absence of the Muthubi twin brothers, Ipfi and Asivhanzhi, in the United midfield was evident from the onset. The two watched the game from the grandstand, as they were still nursing the injuries they had sustained the previous day. Their absence did not stop United from playing united as a team.

Univen threatened to score in the 14th minute, but Mashudu Radzilani lost

possession inside the box. The visitors from Tshakhuma were the first to blow the trumpet.

A breakdown in communication be-tween the keeper of Univen and his defenders gave rise to the United goal in the 29th minute. Takalani Ratshilivha intercepted a back pass before sending the keeper the wrong way.

United fortified their defence by replac-ing Avhakholwi Mudau, who gave way to Khathutshelo Mukomafhedzi early in the last half. Univen introduced Bright Mayimela and Sheriff Mudalahothe for Mashudu Radzilani and Phathutshedzo Govheli respectively.

Univen found the equaliser in the 74th minute.

Desmond Simelane was on target, fol-lowing a neat pass by Ofhani Nelukalo.

United played defensive football in the last 15 minutes of the game. Realizing that the game would reach the penalty shoot-out stage, United replaced their keeper, Ntakadzeni Shirinda, with Khuthadzo Mukomafhedzi.

The winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 full time score. Mukomafhedzi made his presence felt when he saved Ali Themeli’s penalty. United converted six chances while Uni-ven missed one.

Madilonga Mukwevho of Univen (front) and Ndwamato Miriri of United have lost sight of the ball. Musa Chauke of Univen controls the ball.

Muraleni Young Rebellion drop vital pointsMadombidzha Try Again used their home ground advantage to good effect when they beat Muraleni Young Rebel-lion 1-0 in the Limpopo Dairy match played at Madombidzha on Saturday.

Try Again’s goal came when Maanda Maladzha caught the visitors’ defence off guard after receiving a good pass from

fellow striker Andani Mulaudzi.Though Rebellions had the lion’s share

in both halves in as far as ball possession was concerned, they lacked a clear-cut final pass that could have helped them gain full points. Try Again could have gone 3-0 up before half time, but their strikers let them down.

Early in the second half, Rebellions introduced Silas Muhovhekani for Nnd-wa Matshavha. Try Again responded by replacing Adivhaho Tshiremba for Dakalo Ramuthivheli. Their introduction did not change the complection of the match, as the visiting team kept on running for cover.

More woes for Dynamos FC

Gogobole Home Defenders gave Maebane Peace Makers a Sunday to remember, when they ham-mered them 4-0 in their Limpopo Dairy match at the Gogobole grounds on Sunday.

Defenders meant business from the start of the match. Milingoni Tshimuka of Makers was yel-low-carded when the match was five minutes old. He pushed Joshua Mulaudzi and was reprimanded by the referee.

The boys from Kutama did not give up without a fight, despite the setback. Tshimomo Mbambo beat all the defenders and the goalkeeper and finally scored easily in the 10th minute. Phathutshedzo Mashau of Defenders was booked for a late tackle on Peter Sinugo in the 34th minute.

Defenders found the second goal four minutes later. Brighton Phuravhathu made no mistake after receiving a neat pass from Tshilidzi

Mphidi within the box and beat the offside trap to score. The half-time score was 2-0 in favour of Defenders.

The home team introduced Vu-sani Lithole for Joshua Mulaudzi in the 54th minute. Makers’ reliable midfield kingpin, Lucky Mashavha, received the ball at the edge of his own half and tried to pass it back to the keeper, but it was intercepted by Lutendo Phadziri.

Thabo Mudau scored his team’s third goal in the 76th minute. After the goal, Makers regrouped and started to dictate terms. Makers raided the Defenders’ danger area continuously, but Lady Luck was not on their side. Their undoing was trying to walk the ball into the net, while the Defenders’ defence was solid.

The last goal of the match and fourth goal for Defenders was scored by Charles Phadziri from a free-kick to make the final score 4-0.

Thuso “Ngwazi” Ramukakati (left) in a contest against Nditsheni Mphaphuli during a the previous tournament.

In a first for the Makhado Annual Show, a Mu-sangwe (traditional boxing) tournament will be held on Saturday (tommorow).

“Musangwe is underway as I’m speaking and we have fighters like Thuso ‘Ngwazi’ Ramukakati, Khodani Munyai, Lawrence ‘Wrong ten’ Randima, Mpho ‘Bloody’ Nekwakwani and many more who will show their skills,” said the Musangwe boss, Mr Patrick Ramarada.

He said that they decided to stage a tournament at the show, after realizing that people were thirsty for more action. "This is our indigenous traditional sport which we must preserve."

He said that no person suffering from HIV would be allowed to fight. The fear of spreading the disease recently prompted the organisers of the tournament to stop fights at the sight of serious open wounds. He added that participants are allowed to head-butt or knee opponents. "If you are weak, you will eventually regain consciousness in the back of an ambulance," he added.

Although Dynamos have been relegated to the Safa second division after finishing their Na-tional First Division League programme at the bottom of the log last season, Limpopo Province will still have two teams in the NFD.

This follows the promotion of the Se-khukhune-based side, Baroka FC. Baroka repre-sented the province in the Safa second division national promotional play-offs which were staged at the Makhulong Stadium in Johannesburg last week.

Baroka were in Group A, together with Umthatha Bucks, Mbombela United FC, Cape Town All Stars and Young Stars. Unlike in the past two seasons, where Baroka represented the province in the same event and came back with empty hands, this time around their performance was by far above average.

Their opening match was against Umthatha Bucks, whom they crushed 4-0. Mbombela United FC were the second victim and they were brutally walloped 4-1. The team which gave Baroka the toughest match was Cape Town All Stars. Baroka narrowly beat them 1-0. Young Stars were the last on the hit list and they, too, could not escape a beating. They lost 1-3 and thus made Baroka the Group A champions with 12 points.

Maluti FET College finished on top of Group B. The champions from their respective groups gain promotion to the National First Division. Baroka played against Maluti FET College on Sunday afternoon to determine the overall champions and Baroka emerged victorious 2-1. The coach of Baro-ka, Mr Sello Chokoe, was the winner of the coach of the tournament award. The team’s goalkeeper, Veli Mothwa, took home the best goalkeeper award, while player of the tournament and top goal scorer awards went to Khunadi Nkoana, also from Baroka. Nkoana scored six goals in the tournament.

Lesley Khomola of Revolution (front) prevents Mukandangalwo Ramunana of Takers from reaching the ball.

By Frank Mavhungu

KK too good for TakersMaweja Takers could not absorb the pressure from Tshakhuma KK Revo-lution, who beat them 3-1 in the fi nal of the Amos Charity Shield Soccer Tournament at the University of Ven-da Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The referee, Mr Calvin Nemavho-la, reprimanded Khuliso Netshulu of Maweja Takers with a card when the game was only nine minutes old. Net-shulu’s offence was protesting against the referee’s decision. It took Revolu-tion 24 minutes to stamp their authority on the game. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box after Lesley Khomola was brought down by Mashudu Makhari. Alu-

wani Madzunya beat the keeper from the set piece with a volley.

Maweja Takers tried every trick in the book in their desperate search for the equaliser, but Revolution maintained their 1-0 lead until the end of the fi rst half.

Realizing that Takers were strong in the midfi eld, Revolution abandoned their positions for a while and packed themselves at the far back and relied on counter-attacks. The strategy worked for them as they increased the margin in the

57th minute.Masala Tsan-wani beat the offside

trap and ran straight to the stranded keeper before unleashing a ground cut-ter. The Takers’ technical staff blamed the fi rst assistant referee, Mr Eric Mun-yai, for the second goal of Revolution. They argued that it was scored from an offside position.

Takers reduced one in the 74th min-ute. They were awarded a free kick at the edge of the box. Rofhiwa Ganyane, who came on as a substitute, scored from the place kick.

Masala Tsanwani of Revolution was cautioned for obstruction a little later. Itani Nange scored the third for Revolution four minutes before the fi nal whistle.
