French Flute Concertos

The transverse flute was especially popular at the French court; decisive impulses for the instrument’s further technical and sonorous development came from France. A genuine «boom» for this instrument developed, initiated by the publication of Hotteterre’s Principles de la Flute Traversiere in 1707. At the same time, Italian tastes in music found their way into the metropolis of Paris. Many travelling virtuosos and child prodigies came to the city as a result of the founding of the public series Concerts spirituels in 1725; they were enthusiastically received by a large audience consisting of members of the bourgeoisie and the nobility. The French flute vir-tuosos – especially Blavet and Buffardin – seized on this trend and appeared in public with Italian-inspired flute concertos. With his new CD, Frank Theuns and his ensemble Les Buffardins offer an overview of the development of the late-baroque transverse flute repertoire in France, introducing concertos by such great composers of the age as Jean-Marie Leclair, Michel Blavet, Pierre Gabriel Buf-fardin and Jacques Christophe Naudot.

HANDEL, GEORGE FRIDERIC - The Complete Solo Sonatas for Wind Instru-ments

In the year 1712 Handel permanently settled in England, where he was able to concentrate on his chief passion - opera. His obligation to his patrons, connected with the fact that operas could not be performed the whole year round, ensured that Handel also composed a not inconsiderable number of instrumental works, including solo sonatas for transverse flute, recorder and oboe with basso continuo accompaniment. It is clear from the autograph manuscripts and early printed editions of these solo sonatas that, in this case as well, Handel made plentiful use of the recycling procedure so typical of him. Many sonatas exist in versions for various wind instruments as well as for violin, which in some cases differ in their respective keys and number of movements. It is also striking that many sonatas were reworked in later printed editions so that they would be playable on the transverse flute, an instrument that was beco-ming ever more popular in England at that time. The Accent label has now compiled all the solo sonatas for woodwinds on a double CD that also takes the different versions of the pieces into account. The soloists are proven experts in their field: Barthold Kuijken (transverse flute), Peter Van Heyghen (recorder) and Marcel Ponseele (oboe).

HAYDN / SCARLATTI - Chiaro e scuro

An original programme with which the Swiss pianist Olivier Cavé succeeds in summarizing two universes that might, however, a priori appear remote: Domenico Scarlatti vs. Joseph Haydn. In the same album, Olivier Cavé confronts two complementary visions of the keyboard. ‘With this project, I wanted to connect these two composers,’ he tells us, ‘for, when playing Haydn, I always had the feeling that he was familiar with Scarlatti’s music.’ For these two composers, the keyboard is the alphabet of a distinctive language; in a style both playful and mischievous, they composed with a bantering humour, unlimited amusement, unfailing virtuosity and a perfect sense of description. Paradoxically, the two composers meet in their slow movements, of unparalleled simplicity and amazing naturalness that give this music, generations apart, very great lyrical depth. This recording shows to what degree the impact of Scarlatti’s music on Haydn’s keyboard compositions is undeniable. For this project, Olivier Cavé has relied on the learned advice of the American musicologist Elaine Sisman.

MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS - Complete Flute Quartets

Alpha is pleased to welcome again the great flautist Juliette Hurel, who has made several recordings for ZZT and Outhere in the past. This recording is the result of the fruitful encounter between the flautist and the Voce Quartet, which occurred in the inspiring framework of the Ferme de Villefavard in the Limousin region. En route to Paris, Mozart stayed in Mannheim in 1777, obtaining a commission for several works on behalf of an amateur flautist who was also a rich and distinguished surgeon, formerly engaged in the Dutch East India Company. The flute imposed itself undeniably as solo instrument in these scores imbued with concertante writing and the gallant style cha-racteristic of the taste of the Mannheim court at that time. Some of the quartets would be composed later, in Vienna, such as the jovial K. 298 in which each movement takes up a familiar tune, which Mozart either varied or parodied.

VAN BEETHOVEN, LUDWIG -Variations

Olga Pashchenko makes a conspicuous entrance in the Alpha catalogue with a disc devoted entirely to Beethoven. One will remember her interpretation of Opus 111, released by Fuga Libera, of which the appropriateness and maturity left a powerful impression. In this new recording, Olga Pashchenko has chosen to combine the two Opus 49 sonatas and three sets of variations, thus tackling what are commonly called ‘smaller forms’ but which remain major Beethoven works nonetheless. This young pianist (she is not yet 30) commands admiration for her way of always enlarging her route, which is already long (she gave her first recital when she was 9, in New York), relying on certain great influences (in particular, Alexei Lubimov) and thereby further affir-ming her personality as an exceptional musician.

BARTÓK, BELA - Violin Concerto No. 2 / Concerto for Orchestra

After two first recordings released by Zig-Zag Territoires and devoted to Ravel, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, Emmanuel Krivine and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra de-vote this CD to two emblematic works from the end of Bartók’s life: the Violin Concerto No.2, first performed in 1939, and the Concerto for Orchestra, premiered in 1944.These are absolutely major works both in Bartók’s catalogue and from this period in the his-tory of music, and are, moreover, close to the universe of Emmanuel Krivine. For the Violin Concerto, it is Tedi Papavrami who was invited by both the Orchestra and by Alpha Classics. Let us recall the astonishing recording that Tedi Papavrami recently made of Eugène Ysaÿe’s complete violin sonatas for this label.

A modo italiano

Sevillian harpsichordist Javier Núñez presents in Cantus his first a solo recording, which was produced by the great gamba player Fahmi Alqhai (director of Accademia del Piacere, for which Javier serves as harpsichordist), who was artistic director of this recording. The basic idea has been to produce a recording that, while remaining musically and scholarly consistent and with strong stylistic founda-tions, could be very attractive to those who first come to this repertoire, and also to those who know it. Paraphrasing the famous passage referred to the great vihuela player Luys de Narváez, «so that those who do not know this music become marvelled, and those who know it, most mervelled».To achieve this, three factors work together: firstly the impressive technique and transparent, flexible and full of musical direction touch of Javier Núñez; second, a varied and very beautiful program that, as we said at the beginning, is fascinating to listen to; and finally the colours added with the participa-tion, in some tracks, of three great guest musicians and their instruments: double harp by Sara Águeda, percussions of a living legend of early music as Pedro Estevan, in his third appearance in Cantus (you can hear him with the great guitarplayer Xavier Díaz-Latorre on two discs), and the contribution of artistic director Fahmi Alqhai in the production, and as a performer of colascione(an exotic string instrument of Turkish origin), that closes the recording.

La guitarra dels lleons

One of the key moments in the history of this fascinating CD happened in 2010 when the Chief Cura-tor of the Music Museum of Barcelona called on Xavier Díaz-Latorre to make a choice from among ten instruments that he had previously selected. Those chosen would be restored and then used in our recording. It was an impressive selection of 16th to 19th century guitars that had not been played in modern times, all of them in very good conditions, and every and all of them with interesting features that made them worth to be selected. After a long process involving the selection and restoration of the instruments, the choice of a repertoire, the study of the guitars, the recording and production of the CD, the task entrusted to him by the Museu de la Música de Barcelona has been, in Xavier Díaz-Latorre’s own words, «one of the most fascinating experiences in my entire musical career».What is offered here is not merely an example of the technical and musical possibilities of the instru-ments selected, but above all an amazing promenade through a music designed for a type of instru-ments that covered the aesthetic needs of their time, not ours.

BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN - The French Suites BWV 812-817

Cantus is very proud to publish this 2 CD set, masterfully performed by Ignacio Prego. He already appeared in a Cantus release as a member of ensemble La Ritirata in our DVD «Concierto Barroco», but now we can enjoy his amazing gifts as a soloist. Ignacio Prego achieves a perfect balance in his performance of Bach’s French suites on revealing in a clear and luminous reading the internal archi-tecture, the miraculous inner construction of this music, with its imitative counterpoint and charac-teristic armony, while adding freshness and elegance with his wonderful sense for ornamentation. In conclusion, we have one of the best versions of this music avalaible today: moving, elegant, with a clear musical direction, full of expressive nuances and perfectly well-judged tempi. This special 2 CD set for the price of one is presented in a beautiful double digipack with liner notes by David Schulenberg. The recording was done in a villa near Madrid, and benefits from a clear and warm sound engineering by Federico Prieto (Master Acoustics). No serious music lover can miss this.

CAMPRA, ANDRÉ - Tancrède

A Baroque West Side Story, Tancrède tells of the absolute but impossible love between two young people brought together by their passion but separated by their origins. We are in the time of the Crusades: Tancredi is the champion of the Frankish army, and Clorinda the pas-sionaria of the Saracen troops. In the labyrinth of sentiments, the magic wand of the sorcerer Isménor confuses the issues, luring the two heroes into the enchanted forest to better prepare their downfall.Dances, choruses and arias merge in a subtle, poetic mixture, magnified by the dialogues sung in the grand tradition of French prosody and the tragédie lyrique. With Tancrède, André Campra established himself as one of the great opera composers between Lully and Rameau.

Louis XIV. Les musiques du Roi-Soleil

On the occasion of the tricentennial of the death of the Sun King, Alpha Classics, boasting a rich catalogue of benchmark Baroque recordings and a collection in partnership with the Château de Versailles, is celebrating ‘A reign full of music’.More than any other sovereign of his time, Louis XIV (1638-1715) loved the arts and was responsible for their exceptional development. All disciplines were the object of royal atten-tion, thanks to both the considerable means that the monarch devoted to them and to the structuring of each of the Beaux Arts in an academy. The result was a fantastic harvest of masterpieces, a unique period when most of the disciplines joined forces to work on flagship projects, with unprecedented international repercussions. The artistic France of Louis XIV set the tone for all of Europe.

Venecie Mundi Splendor

Recorded in the bright acoustics of the Cenacolo of San Giorgio Maggiore Monastery in Venice, the new recording project of La Reverdie brings together, for the first time, musical compositions written approximately between 1330 and 1430 in honour of the Venetian Doges or for the city of Venice itself. The title is borrowed from the text of one of the most famous motets composed by Johannes Ciconia on the occasion of the submission of the Comune of Padua to the Republic of Venice, which occurred in 1406. The project includes the nine ceremonial motets that, according to the latest research, were composed to commemorate political, diplomatic or devotional events as well the election of the Doge. The com-posers include Marchetto da Padova, Francesco Landini, Johannes Ciconia, Antoinius Romanus, Cris-toforo de Monte and Hugo Lantins. The choice to make use of a rich and varied ensemble, with ample participation of both singers and instrumentalists, is intended to properly render the extravagant and festive qualities of this repertoire, conceived for the most sumptuous state celebrations.

Hermann Prey

‘I am an EU singer’, Hermann Prey always said about himself. However, by that he did not mean so much his citizenship of a country of the European Union as the fact that he felt at home in the fields of ‘E’ and ‘U’, i.e. in ‘serious’ and entertainment music alike. For Prey, this distinction never existed, but only the issue of the quality of music, and he found this not only in the opera and Lied, but also in the operetta, the musical and the well-made hit. For forty-six years, from the time of his first commitment in Wisebaden in 1952 onwards, Prey always convinced his audience: in opera, art and folksong, operetta and musical alike. This collection of 5CDs shows us his fascinating wide range of repertoire and interpretation.

Motets of the Hiller Collection

Johann Adam Hiller published six collections of four-part motets and arias between 1776 and 1791. They offer a rich selection of works mostly from the second half of the 18th century and give us an interesting insight into a new blossoming of the motet, which it then experienced after having led a shadowy existence for more than a hundred years. Here the Sächsisches Vocalensemble (Saxon Vocal Ensemble) under Matthias Jung presents a selection of the most beautiful pieces from these collections.

VERACINI, FRANCESCO MARIA - Complete Sonate Accademiche

Trio Settecento, the “superlative Chicago-based early music ensemble” (Gramophone) presents Italian Baroque composer Francesco Maria Veracini’s monumental Opus 2 Sonate Accademiche for violin and continuo. It’s a cosmopolitan collection of 12 sonatas of breathtaking scope and pan-European influences — a set of sonatas unlike any other of the era. Veracini’s Sonate Accedemiche is both an homage to his fellow-countryman Arcangelo Corelli and an original masterpiece in its own right.Billboard chart-topping violinist Rachel Barton Pine, “one of the rare mainstream performers with a total grasp of Baroque style and embellishment” (Fanfare) and her colleagues in Trio Settecento, cel-list John Mark Rozendaal and harpsichordist David Schrader, bring their “refreshing, life-enhancing Baroque playing” (Chicago Tribune) to these sonatas infused with melodies imported from Scotland, Dalmatia, Poland, the Canary Islands, and rural France.Trio Settecento received accolades for its previous Cedille album of Italian Baroque music, An Ita-lian Sojourn, the first installment of the ensemble’s celebrated country-by-country journey through Baroque Europe. ClassicsToday.com said, “This is a disc that demands, encourages, and truly rewards many hearings, made even more enjoyable by the vibrant, natural, ideally balanced sound. Highly recommended!”

Hör, Kristenhait !

The greatest German poets of song lyrics during the late Middle Ages, the Monk of Salzburg and Oswald von Wolkenstein, as the «last of the Minnesingers», are not only representatives of the flowe-ring of the secular poetry and music of their time. They were also important composers of sacred music in the German language, an aspect that has hardly received attention so far. This recording, «Hör, kristenhait!» (Listen, Christendom!), by the Ensemble Leones, presents this pro-foundly devout side of both musicians in which they employ their entire poetic and compositional energy: the Monk of Salzburg with his own German texts sung to Gregorian melodies, and Oswald von Wolkenstein with his new and splendid tunes. The song-speech poet Michel Beheim also makes his voice heard with the invocation to the Holy Spi-rit that opens the programme. The CD is completed by instrumental adaptations of sacred works by composers of this epoch. The highly experienced singers Sabine Lutzenberger and Raitis Grigalis stand by the side of the ensemble director Marc Lewon, who accompanies them with Baptiste Romain on various instruments of the period.

VIVALDI, ANTONIO - Il Farnace

Il Farnace is the most re-written and re-proposed of Vivaldi’s operas, it’s like a beloved child who worries his father, and to whom the parent always wants to give the best. Versions of Farnace, two in 1727 and one each in 1730, 1731 and 1732, had been conceived and adapted to the different circumstances for Venice, Prague, Pavia and Mantua, always with a cast to Vivaldi’s satisfaction and with the composer in control of the production. The greatest appreciation of Vivaldi’s operatic music was expressed in a letter by a spectator of the 1727 Carnival season, the abbot Antonio Conti. He wrote to Madame de Caylus that ofall the operas of the Venice season he liked best Farnace because its music was very varied, “between the sublime and the tender”, and because Vivaldi’s pupil worked wonders. In 1738, for the Ferrara Carnival season, Vivaldi wrote a new score of the opera. This is the last Farnace, in two acts, as the third was lost.

KALKBRENNER, FRIEDRICH - 3 Piano Sonatas Op. 4

Around the end of the 18th century, the constant advancements of piano manufacturers led to a new figure of musician: the piano virtuoso. Clementi, Dussek, Hummel, Moscheles, Ries, Kalkbrenner, Steibelt, Field and Cramer were the protagonists of one of the most successful periods for the piano, which would culminate, around 1830, in the birth of a type of pianism (and of virtuosity) that was radi-cally new as to form, contents and instrumental technique: the romantic pianism of Liszt, Thalberg, Chopin and Schumann.Indeed, according to the critics, Kalkbrenner was, with Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Ignaz Mos-cheles, one of the most acclaimed and respected pianists of the day. Among the pianists of the romantic period, Fryderyck Chopin admired him and dedicated to him his Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor.Kalkbrenner was a very prolific composer and published nearly 200 opus numbers, mostly dedicated to his instrument. The 3 Sonatas Op. 4, published in 1809, clearly show Beethoven’s influence, mostly in terms of language and expressivity, but also – though less so – of technical difficulty.

SOR, FERNANDO - Studies in the Form of Suites

An unexpected polyphony: that is, above all, what impressed the people who were lucky enough to listen to Fernando Sor playing the guitar. Not a mere chordal accompaniment, or a bare melody: his guitar was not only virtuosic; in his hands it turned into “un instrument d’armonie”, according to the opinion of the «Revue Musicale» (Paris, 1833-34).Sor’s studies seem different from others: in finding this form, his personal touch takes not the shape of a set of commands but of a graceful parable, which, in the small space of a few measures, can tell a story and at the same time incorporate the rule without pedantry. Sor composed six collections of studies, for a total of 121 Studies, published during the twenty years of his artistic maturity: from age 37 to 59, or from 1815 to 1837.In order to recreate the original timbre of these pieces, the guitar used for this recording is an original instrument made by the Rovetta Brothers in 1817, perfectly preserved. It is characterised by a gorgeous floral wooden decoration in relief at each side of the bridge. The purfling around the soundboard, the rosette, and the final part of the figerboard are inlayed with a series of ivory triangles. Back and sides are in curly maple. The neck, slim and elegant, is made from pear wood stained black.

CHERICI, PAOLO

Amours amours amours

The Schola Cantorum in Basel has long championed the imaginative exploration of early music, crea-ting expertly-researched programmes and encouraging superbly-performed interpretations with a close attention also to the most appropriate recording conditions. Such was the case with Amours amours amours, a disc of lute duos starting from music composed in the fifteenth century, recorded in 2001 by Karl-Ernst Schröder and Crawford Young and deservedly justifying its reissue now, courtesy of Glossa. The two artists – and sadly Schröder was to die not long after the original release of the recording, which continues to serve as a memorial for him –had delved into the world of Renaissance chansons, frottole, basses danses and tenors, and the known arrangements of such original vocal and instrumen-tal works. They had conjured an eminently satisfying selection which demonstrated both the legacy of this widely-practiced performance activity and also Schröder and Young’s own improvisatory talents. Beginning with the early musical prints of Ottaviano Petrucci, the lutenists have made use of Francesco Spinacino’s arrangements as a starting point for considering two, three and four-part versions of piecesby Josquin, Agricola, Ambrosio and Isaac and many other composers of the time, with the theme of love – as with the disc’s title – wordlessly flowing through the whole programme.

CALDARA, ANTONIO - Trio Sonatas

Two former students of the Schola Cantorum in Basle, both now captivating audiences each with their individual violinistic artistry, Amandine Beyer and Leila Schayegh, join forces for a new SCB recording devoted to the trio sonata music of Antonio Caldara, and issued with Glossa.Though he is known now (as for much of his life) primarily as a composer of oratorios and operas, the Venetian Caldara made his name penning early examples of the trio sonata form; his Op. 1 and 2 sets were published in 1693 and 1699 respectively. Caldara’s Op. 1 Trio Sonatas are characterized by their contrasting use of fast and slow movements, those from the second set by their incorporation of dances. The continuo team here is made up of Jonathan Pesek, cello, Jörg-Andreas Bötticher, harpsichord and organ, and Matthias Spaeter, liuto attiorbato. Beyer and Schayegh both were taught at the SCB by Chiara Banchini and are continuing their connection with the school as teaching successors to Banchini.

RAFF, JOACHIM - Piano Works 6

Each piece on the sixth and final volume of this series demonstrates different aspects of Raff ’s genius as a composer for the piano. British-Vietnamese Tra Nguyen’s imaginative programming balances core repertoire and lesser-known music, winning critical praise. Her discography introduces many world première recordings of neglected music. Her previous recordings of Joachim Raff ’s piano music have earned wide critical acclaim, including Album of the Week awards by The Independent. Tra Nguyen studied with Lev Naumov at the Moscow Conservatory and with Christopher Elton at the Royal Aca-demy of Music where she received the Academy’s highest award for her final recital. She was awarded the ARAM (Associate of the Royal Academy of Music) for her “significant contribution to the music profession” in 2013.

Grieg - Evju

Edvard Grieg first met Percy Grainger in London in 1906 and the two became good friends, Grieg inviting the ‘Young Apollo’ to spend the summer of 1907 with him at Troldhaugen where they revised the famous Piano Concerto in A minor in preparation for a European tour later that year. Edvard Grieg had plans for a second piano concerto and wrote several piano sketches for a concerto in B-minor in 1883. He never completed it, but Norwegian composer Helge Evju has taken up the challenge to compose a work based on the incomplete concerto fragments, creating a romantic and beautiful companion concerto, faithful to Grieg’s musical style and flair.

Insomnia

Insomnia is the story of a nocturnal journey, reassuring and disturbing at the same time, both mystical and unpredictable. Insomnia is five Hymns to the Night, composed by five American composers over a period of nearly 100 years. At the center of this journey stands A Little Midnight Music, George Crumb’s adaptation of the The-lonious Monk Jazz Standard ‘Round Midnight. He leads his listeners and performers past the neon signs of the New York jazz clubs of the 1940s into the oppressive darkness of the avant-garde pianist. Sleepless Night and Urban Nocturnes by Bruce Stark not only reference jazz, and are the outgrowth of the composer’s long-standing interest in improvisation. In George Gershwin short Prelude we can almost imagine the clinking of glasses at last call. John Cage’s Dream and Brian Belet‘s Summer Phan-toms - Nocturne function as the album’s centerpieces and provide a pair of contrasting soundtracks for nightly inner escapism. To describe Kai Schumacher as a “punk pianist” would be excessive. His deeply thoughtful style of playing blurs the boundaries of the classical avant-garde and pop culture without getting stuck in all-too familiar crossover paths. One focus of Kai Schumacher’s solo repertoire has been on American piano music of the late 20th and the 21st centuries.

BRUCKNER, ANTON - Te Deum / Psalm 150 / Messe No. 2

Bruckner’s career as a composer began with writing music for the church. Coming from humble rural origins, Bruckner would receive most of his musical education in monasteries, where he often worked as a teacher and organist. It wasn’t until the composition of the Mass in D Minor (1864), written when the composer was 40, that we begin to glimpse what would become his mature style. This CD brings together works from Bruckner‘s late period - the Mass in E minor, originally composed in 1866 is heard here in the revised version for choir and brass of 1882 - perhaps his most symphonic Mass of all. Also on the program is his setting of the 150th Psalm (1892). Written on commission for to provide a festive hymn to celebrate the opening of the exposition Internationale Ausstellung für Musik und Theatherwesen, it is one of his most important works, and as with the Te Deum (1884/85), an expansive and sonorous score.Helmuth Rilling leads his Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, the Gächinger choir and four outstanding so-loists: Pamela Coburn, Ingeborg Danz, Christian Elsner and Hans- Josef Selig in moving performances of Bruckner’s sacred works, bridging the gap between symphonic and sacred music, connecting these works both to the glorious traditions they sprang from to the bold new directions they would lead.

BACH, JOHANN SEBASTIAN - Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord

Prize-winning Bach specialist John Butt O.B.E. and distinguished violinist Lucy Russell deliver a per-sonal and historically informed performance on J.S. Bach: Sonatas for violin and harpsichord. The interpretations benefit from Butt and Russell’s combined cumulative experience gained over a lifetime of study, together with an evident rapport honed during their work with Dunedin Consort.Russell’s performance explores the colours and emotions present in the music as well as highlighting Bach’s good humour and quirkiness. The duo relish the energetic dialogue and astonishingly diverse moods and characters present in Bach’s music: from the supremely expressive violin ‘voice’ at the ope-ning of the first sonata to the playful rhythmic tricks in the last movement of Sonata No. 4. Bach’s fiendishly complex fugal writing and typically delicious chromaticism is in evidence throughout these hugely enjoyable works. Butt’s informative booklets notes highlight the historical significance of these sonatas in which Bach introduces many of the fundamental features of an essentially new genre.

MOZART, WOLFGANG AMADEUS - Opera Arias and Overtures

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra has established impeccable Mozartian credentials with its award-winning discography, to which Mozart: Opera Arias and Overtures is the latest addi-tion.The SCO’s previous forays into operatic repertoire (Handel with soprano Emma Bell and Mo-zart, Haydn & Cimarosa with baritone William Berger) have been highly critically acclaimed. This recording features a hand-picked selection of arias from six of Mozart’s much-loved ope-ras, alongside their respective overtures. The SCO’s affinity with Mozart’s music is demons-trated with perfect eighteenth-century style in the overtures; whilst the arias see the orchestra lend characterful support.Award-winning soprano Elizabeth Watts has performed in Don Giovanni at Covent Garden, Così fan tutte for Glyndebourne on Tour and Le nozze di Figaro for Santa Fe Opera and Welsh National Opera; she utilises her experience to create memorable performances.A love of Mozart inspired conductor Christian Baldini to make music his career so it is fitting that his recording debut with the SCO features repertoire that is so close to his heart.

Ghosts and Shadows. Music of Spain

Melodia Records presents an album of Spanish guitar music performed by Artyom Dervoed. This young Russian guitarist is undoubtedly one of the eminent figures of world guitar art. “A musician with a broad dynamic range, intellectual and expressive observation of the phrasing, and boundless technical abilities,” “an artist of the highest calibre,” “the tsar of the guitar,” as foreign music critics enthusiastically describe the young musician. At the age of thirteen, he scored his first victory at the International Competition “Young Musicians” in Moscow. In 1994 to 2014, Artyom Dervoed won prizes of thirty-seven international contests, inclu-ding sixteen first awards.Artyom Dervoed’s first album that was recorded for Naxos in 2007 and included works of Russian composers entered the top ten bestselling chamber music albums and was acclaimed by Classical Gui-tar magazine. The musician’s new album is dedicated to the roots of the classical guitar tradition – Spanish music of the 16th to 20th centuries. It features works of Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Rodrigo, Francisco Tárrega and other composers.

The Songs of Roger Quilter

Few composers – especially song composers – can claim to have written works that have remained in print since they were first published more than a hundred years ago. Roger Quilter is one such, though the number of his songs still in print is regrettably small. He wrote about 140 songs and arrangements.Quilter studied piano at the Frankfurt Conservatory, where his fellow students included Cyril Scott, Balfour Gardiner, and Percy Grainger. They were known as the Frankfurt Group, though they had little in common beyond a dislike of Beethoven. Quilter took the drawing-room song into another world: the sound and style is warm, tonal though often highly chromatic with an almost iridescent quality, a generous-sounding late-flowering Romantic colour, and highly sensitive to the text. These songs are immensely rewarding to sing and play, and exploration reveals more and more of the skill that went into them, and their sheer musica l depths. Most of his songs sit best on tenor and bari-tone voices: most, but not all, and many of the songs which are particularly suited to a woman’s voice are included here. The selection ranges from songs from 1907, to one published the year before he died, with most from his middle years, when he was at his most vibrant.

Inspired by Bach

“No composer in the history of the Western classical tradition has left as big a legacy as Johann Sebastian Bach. Like a comet that never dies out, his work continues to pervade life’s spaces , his ‘light’ remains a guide, an assurance in difficult times. Bach’s work transcends his own time and even as early as Mozart, references (perhaps even returns) to Bach are not considered regressive but are associated with notions of progress.” Julius BergerFor more than 40 years, the Augsburg cellist Julius Berger has been a mainstay of the musical world. Not just because he is a wonderful interpreter, a ‘prophet of the cello’, as Frank furter Allgemeine newspaper critic W. E. von Lewinsky hailed him following his second recording of Bach’s cello suite, but because he looks to enrich the world of music in many ways, as an interpreter, teacher, researcher and thinker who is not content simply to follow the well-trod-den path. In demand as a soloist and chamber musician worldwide, he has recorded nume-rous CDs and trained talented up-and-coming musicians.

SCHUMANN, ROBERT - Album for the Young

Many of Schumann’s piano works are staples of the repertoire and are found in the programmes of the greatest pianists, but rarely is Album for the Young performed or recorded by first-rate musicians. This recording readdresses this disparity and reveals the character and qualities of these charming compositions.Schumann was most at ease, most personal and innovative, in his works for piano. In his symphonies and chamber works, his writing is more conservative and reverential towards the Classical tradition, but in his piano works he created his very own forms, content and manner of expression. These works reflect his character, temperament and creative imagination most strongly and vividly.Pianist and conductor Vladimir Feltsman is one of the most versatile and constantly interesting musi-cians of our time. His vast repertoire encompasses music from the Baroque to 20th-century compo-sers. A regular guest soloist with leading symphony orchestras in the United States and abroad, he appears in the most prestigious concert series and music festivals all over the world.

ZEMLINSKY, ALEXANDER - Die Seejungfrau / Sinfonieta Op. 23

The Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra under John Storgårds offer a fascinating program of two major orchestral works by Alexander Zemlinsky (1871–1942) as world premiere recordings.Die Seejungfrau (Mermaid) is a powerful 3-movement symphonic “fantasy” written by Zemlinsky in 1902. Before the work was premiered in 1905 Zemlinsky had already made radical cuts, which included removing 14 pages of the original score. For reasons still unknown today Zemlinsky withdrew the score and since 1910 never mentioned the work in his catalogue of works. The work was not heard again until 1984. The lush romantic score has appealed to its listeners ever since. This release is the first recording of a new critical version based on the original score.Zemlinsky escaped Germany in 1933. The Sinfonietta, Op. 34 was written soon afterwards and pre-miered in Prague in 1935. The work is a fascinating example of Zemlinsky’s late orchestral writing and stylistic evolution. John Storgårds, one of Finland’s exceptional artists, has taken the classical music world by storm in recent decades. Since 2008, Storgårds has been Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of BBC Philharmonic Orchestra since 2012.

L’Arte dei Piffari

William Dongois, Franck Poitrineau and Stefan Legée founded the Ensemble Ventosum in order to perform historically correct interpretations of the music for their instruments – cornetts and sackbuts (baroque trombones). An important concern of the ensemble is cooperation on equal terms between all the musicians without any fixed hierarchical structure; this enables them to play freely and creati-vely, combining musicological knowledge with a zest for improvisation. Both instrumental groups existed in various sizes and ranges and were considered brass consorts – which is not actually correct, for cornetts were made out of wood, after all. These kinds of consorts were used in the areas of both secular and sacred music because their full, sustainable sound made them ideally suited for playing in churches, large spaces and outdoors. The Ensemble Ventosum introduces Italian music from the «golden age» of cornetts and sackbuts - which lasted from about 1580 to 1650 - on the CD L’Arte dei Piffari. It includes works for grand prin-cely weddings and dances as well as instrumental motets and madrigals, providing a representative overview of the wide variety of applications of these instruments and the «art of the winds» (L’Arte dei Piffari) of this epoch.

JACQUET DE LA GUERRE, ELISABETH - Chamber Music

Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre was the best-known woman composer in France’s Ancien régime under the rule of Louis XIV and Louis XV. From the vantage point of today, she embodies the ideal of the modern, emancipated woman, regarding both her personality and her way of living and working. She was a harpsichordist, organist, virtuoso, a genius at improvisation, teacher and composer: in her, we encounter one of the most extraordinary personalities in the history of music. She was one of the most experimental musicians of her time and adopted numerous innovative deve-lopments in her works. In the vehement quarrel over the supremacy of French or Italian music, she was clearly on the side of the representatives of the réunion des gouts - the unification of musical styles - in opposition to the traditionalists. More or less prominent Italian influences can be heard in all of her works. The present recording by the ensemble Musica Fiorita (including such illustrious musicians as David Plantier, Xenia Löffler and Rebeka Rusó), re-issued to celebrate the composer’s 350th birthday and the 25th anniversary of the ensemble, offers an interesting insight into the diverse instrumental works of this outstanding composer.

Mendelssohn Violin Concerto & Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto

This release arguably features the two greatest concertos ever written for the violin: performed by one of the most brilliant violinists of her generation, together with one of the finest orchestras, and under the baton of one of the world’s foremost conductors. This recording of Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn violin concertos bears witness to the eminence of the collaboration between violinist Arabella Stein-bacher, conductor Charles Dutoit and PENTATONE’s Orchestra of the Season January-June 2015, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and the result thereof. After waiting for a long time to record these concertos with the perfect collaboration, Arabella Stein-bacher didn’t waste any chance to shine with heart-felt enthusiasm and bravura in this recording. Her performance produced such a pure, yet fierce sound that it allowed the music to speak in an imme-diate, translucent way. Recorded in September 2014 in the magnificent Victoria Hall, Geneva, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande were totally at home with the repertoires and performed with great confidence; they were led by Dutoit, who was vivid, rhythmic and clear in his direction. The vigorousplaying results in a vibrant sound that is captured perfectly in this multi-channel SACD recording.

STRAUSS, RICHARD - Symphonia Domestica & Die Tageszeiten

Richard Strauss’s original working title for the work was “My home. A symphonic portrait of myself and my family” and was intended as a homely sequel to Ein Heldenleben (1898). Instead of the hero’s struggle for supremacy, Symphonia presents a portrait of a family, with the husband, wife and child each characterised by themes. For all the popularity of many of Richard Strauss’s tone poems, Symphonia isn’t recorded all that often and, arguably, it is even less frequently performed in concert. This luminous recording of Sympho-nia Domestica tells us what we are in for: an excellent recording with plenty of inner details, Marek Janowski’s straightforward conducting and Rundfunk Synfonie-Berlin orchestra’s zesty performance.Die Tageszeiten for male choir and orchestra was commissioned in 1927 by the Wiener Schubertbund (the Vienna Schubert Choral Society), who also performed the première of the piece under conductor Viktor Keldorfer on 21 July 1928 in Vienna during the Deutsche Sängerbundesfest (German Choral Society Festival). The choral settings have a captivating harmonic luminosity, melodic simplicity, instrumental finesse, and an almost unheard-of sonic serenity. Such a gem of a recording is a must-have for any serious Strauss lover!

This extraordinary double CD is a live recording dedicated to the great pianistic romanticism. Here we can clearly feel how much the Italian culture influenced the genius of Franz Liszt that transposed on his favorite instrument all the magic of the great opera (Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti), popular tradition (Venice and Naples) and classic literature (Dante, Petrarca). Literally enchanted by his Italian expe-rience, Liszt composed music of rare effectiveness, masterfully interpreted by the talent of Roberto Cappello, pianist with transcendental technique and musicality.

VERDI, GIUSEPPE - Chamber Arias

If we had to rank the world most famous composers, Giuseppe Verdi would definitely be on the podium. This exciting CD includes the chamber works for voice and piano - Romanze da camera - used by the composer to open his way into the Milanese high society when he arrived from his native Busseto, still unknown and eager to be appreciated. On this world premiere recording on historical piano, the amazing voices of Daniela Nuzzoli and Raul Her-nandez accompanied by Marcello Rossi, are revealing the stature of the future great opera composer.

FUMAGALLI, POLIBIO - Organ Music

Within this album is proposed a small part of the immense Polibio Fumagalli organ music production. Prolific and talented composer, Fumagalli found himself through the great crisis that shook the world of the organ music in Italy in the second half of the nineteenth century, culminated with the famous Motu Proprio of Pope Pius X in 1903, that officially gave way to the Cecilian reform. Through his best student, Marco Enrico Bossi, who quickly became the greatest world-renowned concert player of his time, Fumagalli realizes that the organ music developed in Italy till that time was coming to an end, and from the rest of the world a new music was coming completely apart from the world of the opera. For this reason, and understanding he had nothing to learn from the Italian organ panorama, too tied to the stylistic features of melodrama, Bossi abandoned his studies. Finally Fumagalli will react by experimenting new forms and innovating his writing, engaging in an arduous task here credited by organist Fabio Re on the monumental Serassi (1852) organ in the cathedral of Valenza.

GODARD, BENJAMIN - Les trois quatuors

Benjamin Godard: here’s one to rediscover! The Franck set, then the impressionists and then all those who came along afterwards have thoroughly pickled him. It is quite undeserved! He was part of a trend that did not stay the course, yet it left us a few gems, including a certain romantic tradition inherited from his teacher Reber, who in turn received it from Mendels-sohn and Schumann. And let us allow these composers (Reber, Onslow, Gouvy and a few others) the merit of kee-ping alight the instrumental ‘flame’ at a time when this was much neglected. Godard wrote three quartets, full of diverse, original ideas, that bring out the Quatuor Élysée’s qualities. The Quartet, celebrating its twentieth anniversary, has always sought to bring together theRussian and French schools, and Timpani featured them in its complete Magnard recording. Let us hail the merit of these instrumentalists who, roaming far from the beaten track, provide us with a such a great world premiere recording!

The greatest appreciation of Vivaldi’s operatic music was expressed in a letter by a spectator of the 1727 Carnival season, the abbot Anto-nio Conti. He wrote to Madame de Caylus that of all the operas of the Venice season he liked best Farnace because its music was very varied, “between the sublime and the tender”, and because Vivaldi’s pupil worked wonders. In 1738, for the Ferrara Carnival season, Vivaldi wrote a new score of the opera. This is the last Farnace, in two acts, as the third was lost.

The performance of Verdi’s famous Messa da Requiem celebrating Toscanini’s fiftieth anniversary of death in 2007 took place at the beautiful basilica of St Mark’s in Venice, where it was first performed on 22 May 1874 to mark the anniversary of the death of the Italian poet Alessandro Manzoni. The Orchestra Symphonica Toscanini was founded in Rome in 2006 and consists of some two hundred young and highly skilled musi-cians, all of whom have been selected by Lorin Maazel, the orchestra’s Music Director for life. The use of opera singers in this sacred work gives this interpretation a special splendour, harking back to the performance tradition that can be retraced to the first performances led by Verdi himself in 1874.With this gorgeous interpretation, Lorin Maazel celebrates Maestro Toscanini’s fiftieth anniversary of death and the country of Italy which gave him his inspiration.

REMBRANDT - From the National Gallery and Rijks-museum

A once-in-a-lifetime event hosted by London’s National Gallery, in collaboration with Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, is a major exhibition of Rembrandt’s late masterpieces. Given exclusive access by the Na-tional Gallery, the film documents this extraordinary show and inte-rweaves Rembrandt’s life story and behind-the-scenes at the National Gallery. This extraordinary exhibition highlights the formal and ico-nographic concerns that occupied Rembrandt in the final years of hislife. The works he produced during this period are soulful, honest and in many ways define our image of Rembrandt as a man and as an artist. The film will explore the exhibition’s key works, inviting contri-butions from specially invited guests including curators and art his-torians.
