Our Lord Jesus Christ, initiated the Sacrament of Penance when He said, “Receive the Holy Spirit, if you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:22-23) He also said to Peter, “I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in Heaven”. (Matthew 16:19) With support of the scriptures, our Holy Catholic faith teaches that we are to confess our sins to an ordained priest. Also, referred to as the Sacrament of Reconciliation or Confession, the Sacrament of Penance consists of our essential elements:

1. Contrition: A heartfelt sorrow and aversion for the sin committed along with the intention to sin no more.

2. Confession: After an examination of conscience, the confessing of at least all serious sins to the priest.

3. Act of Penance: Satisfaction for sins committed and giving redress for injuries done.

4. Absolution: The priest forgives the sins using a special prayer and the sign of the cross. To help ensure the holiness of the Church’s members, Catholics having reached the age of discretion are required “to confess serious sin at least once a year” (Canon 989). To progress in the sacramental life, Catholics are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Penance. We invite and welcome you to attend and be reconciled to God and to one another.

Gospel Reflection - Third Sunday of Lent “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it [he] found none.” We live in a results-driven society. It can be easy to put pressure on ourselves to succeed. If we’re not keeping up with the perceived “good life” of those around us, we feel anxious and disappointed. Some of the Gospel stories about fruitfulness can seem to play out in this fashion. “For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down.”

The message seems to be clear. Abide in God and bear fruit! Stand apart from God and be barren. But what happens when we’re trying, but the growth we wanted doesn’t seem to be coming our way? What if it feels like life just isn’t bearing fruit? This Sunday, Jesus gives us a sign of hope. “[The gardener] said to him in reply, ”Sir, leave it for this year also, it may bear fruit in the future.” How quick can we be to judge! Perhaps you started out Lent with high hopes and big ideas for getting closer to God. Maybe things haven’t gone exactly like you thought. It can be easy to lose patience with our failures or slow growth. We shouldn’t be too quick to assume that God has give up on us. He hasn’t. The same ideas apply to those around us. Perhaps we’re the planter of the fig tree. We expect a certain amount of growth from someone in our life and they just aren’t measuring up. Let today’s Gospel be a gentle nudge for mercy. As Lent continues to unfold, be patient with yourself and those around you. Wait for God to provide the growth.

LIVE THE LITURGY INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK

If salvation history teaches us anything, it’s that God is very patient. Time and time again, people have wandered away from him and he has sent prophet after prophet to lead them back. To show us just how much he does love us, he sent us his Son who revealed this unconditional love in all that He said and did. This Lenten season is an opportunity to repent and turn back. The mystery of God’s presence is revealed in and through the ordinary events of life as the birth of Christ reminds us. God told Moses through the burning bush, I am who am”. And so he reminds us today. Let us turn away no more and turn back to truth.

There will NOT be a 9:15AM School Mass on Fridays during Lent. This mass has been moved to

MONDAYS at 9:15AM DURING LENT. Stations will be at 2PM and 7PM on Fridays.

All are welcome to join us as we pray the Rosary after the 7:30AM Mass on Mondays, Wednesdays

SPRING-A-RAMA We are in need of volunteers for the Basket Booth to organize all donated items into “baskets,” and manage this booth’s operations during the festival. Please note that 100% of the profits from the Spring-a-Rama go directly toward the support of St. Elizabeth Elementary School. The Basket Booth is responsible for approximately 20% of those profits! Your volunteer time will be well worth your effort, and your resulting contribution to the school will be greatly appreciated by our Catholic School Community. Please contact Chris or Patty DiCarlo at 412-233-4518 if you are interested in learning more about helping out with this most profitable task.

ST. ELIZABETH SCHOOL Middle School Mardi Gras Celebration In preparation for Lent, the Middle School students discussed the concept of sacrifice and why it is necessary during this holy season. Sacrifice doesn’t always mean “giving up” something. It could also involve the “active awareness” of doing something that is not easy, on a daily basis. We talked about ideas such as being more kind to others with random acts of kindness. Our goal during Lent is to be more Christ-like in our words, thoughts and actions. After our discussion, we learned about the history and celebrations of Mardi Gras. Dating back to medieval origins in France, the largest US celebration is in New Orleans, Louisiana. The city’s celebration begins with “12th Night,” held on Epiphany and ends on Fat Tuesday. In our French classes, we enjoyed our last hurrah with donuts and juice and created colorful, flashy masks, in line with the tradition of the French celebration.

Eighth Grade French Menus In an effort to showcase our creative side and expand our food vocabulary, the Eighth Grade Students created original menus in our French classes. The students worked on their own or in small

groups to design French menus that included specific items such as appetizers, salads, soups, entrees, side dishes, deserts and beverages. Each menu was based on a unique theme chosen by the students and were written in French, with English translations. The themes ranged from Disney movies, to Japanese delicacies, to barbeque-inspired selections, to dragon-related fare and much more. Each finished product included graphics which were indicative of the delicious menu options. As the research progressed, the students found themselves getting hungry for their favorite foods which they incorporated into their final project. We set up a table in our “restaurant,” Café Français, for all to visit and enjoy our wonderful creations! Alumni News ... Oliver and Noble Dresser competed in Forensics for Central Catholic High School this year. They recently competed against public and private high schools and Oliver was chosen to go to the state competition. The following weekend they competed against the Catholic high schools in the area and Noble was chosen to go to the National Forensics Tournament. Both young men got their start right here at St. Elizabeth Elementary School. Congratulations to both!

In Our Diocese and Community

MARRIAGE MOMENTS by Susan Vogt There are many messages to be understood in the story of the Woman at the Well (John 4:5-42) … the role of women, the importance of hydration, what qualifies a person as a true husband, the woman being sent as a disciple to proclaim the Christ … Pick one and discuss it together. FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar The owner of the fig tree was impatient because the tree did not live up to his expectations. In families there are those who don’t live up to our expectations. Imitate the gardener and give them more time and help. Don’t cut them out of your life. Love asks us to be connected, not productive. PARENTING POINTERS by Susan Vogt March 21 was National Single Parent Day. If you missed it, it’s still not too late to give yourself a rest or a treat. Remember, parenthood is not limited to one gender. Male and females both carry responsibility for their child. If you are not a single parent, perhaps you can provide some of that rest or respite for a single parent that you know this weekend.

I Must Go Over to Look at This Remarkable Sight – In today’s first reading, Moses, while

tending the flocks of his father-in-law, happens upon a bush which is burning, but which is not

consumed. Moses’ reaction is to “go over to look at this remarkable sight, which he does. However,

the Lord, in speaking from the burning bush, wants him to do more than look. Instead, God reveals

Himself to Moses and calls Moses to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt. While Moses has some

reservations, he says yes to God and works to lead His people to freedom. Like Moses, the Lord wants us to do more

than look at Him or at His Church. The Lord wants us to be engaged with Him. Faith is not a passive endeavor. Faith is

an active engagement with God in the community of the Church. It is easy to look at the Church and say, “I like this”

or, “I do not like that” and then do nothing about it. It takes effort to get involved to be an instrument of Jesus’ life in

the Church. As we continue our Lenten journey, may we be renewed not only to see God better, but to embrace most

fully His will. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
