By Offi cer D. Hatch Kearny Police Department Many of us spend a portion of our day on computers whether it is for something as simple as checking email or reading a news article online. Many of us may frequent social networking websites in which your personal information may be accessed by others. Though the security of these websites may prevent people whom you do not know from having access to your information, much of your information may be shared unintentionally by those people with whom you allow access. It is very important to keep in mind what information you choose to share when accessing any online content. This includes personal activity such as vacations, location information, family activities, etc. Though you may be sharing information with those people

whom you choose, those people may share the same information with others whom you may not know. Many social networking websites, email accounts or other websites, have privacy settings that allow you to properly secure your information or keep it from being shared to the wrong people. Please take the time to look at the websites or

email accounts you use and their settings to ensure your information is kept private, secure and safe. When speaking of how you share your personal information online, the same applies to telephone calls with people whom you may not know. There are people and others who participate in large organized crime involving the theft of personal information or convincing people to loan them money for various reasons. In many cases, one would receive a telephone call from a person who claims to be a relative such as a daughter or grandson. This person then states they are in trouble and need a specifi ed amount of

money wired to a specifi ed bank account in order to help them in the particular trouble they claim to be in. This person will know your name, the name of your relative they are pretending to be and often know your address and other personal information in order to help convince you they are who they say they are. Imitating another individual for fraudulent means is a crime. If you receive a telephone call like this, gather as much information from them as you can including where they are, what they want, who they claim to be, their phone number, how to contact them again, etc. Be careful not to share any more

personal information with them than they already have. These same organizations may also use your email account to attempt the same result. In many cases, an email is sent and states you need to click on a link within the email in order to complete a specifi ed task. If you do not recognize the sender of the email or cannot verify who they say they are, do not click on the link. The

link may contain a computer virus or similar program that either steals your personal information or causes your computer to crash and malfunction. Your personal information should be kept personal. However, many crimes may not be completely preventable, your cooperation and attentiveness greatly decreases the chances for the crime to take place.

Sheriff’s Report

Editor: A quarter and two pennies. Out of every dollar of personal property tax you pay this year, Pinal County will receive, on average, 27 cents. The rest, roughly 73 cents of each dollar, is divided among school districts, special districts and Central Arizona College. The Board of Supervisors is not responsible for setting the tax rates for these entities. This number is down from an average of 31 cents in fiscal year 2010-2011. That 27 cents helps to fund many services our elected officials offer, along with of our administrative services across the county. That means you, the taxpayer, receive services from public safety to the recording of documents for only 27 cents out of each dollar you spend on property taxes. Many of these services are mandated according to the state constitution and state law. Since 2010, this Board of Supervisors has dropped the property tax rate by five percent. When you look at other counties across Arizona, Pinal County only assesses 74 percent of what it could, according to state

law. If we were to assess the maximum allowable, Pinal County could raise the property tax to $5.16 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation. This fiscal year we are down to $3.79 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation. Some people ask me why we can’t have a tax rate like Maricopa County. To be frank, Maricopa County has the pleasure of having nearly 90 percent of its population living within incorporated entities like Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler and Mesa. Many of those cities also have taxes and fees on top of the county assessment, which must be factored into the comparison. Since Maricopa County does not need to provide many of its services to these communities, they are able to keep their tax rate at $1.24 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation. Pinal County is not that lucky. About half of our residents live in unincorporated areas and we are responsible for providing services such as public safety, public works, courts, health care

Letter to the Editor: County property taxesassistance and animal care and control to them. While we plan to drop the tax rate even more in

the future, we must be cognizant that this county has a responsibility to providing a wide variety

of services for our 375,000 residents. For only 27 cents on each property tax dollar, I sincerely feel that we all

get a lot for our money here in Pinal County. /s/ Pete RiosPinal County Supervisor

Editor: I wanted to write a brief ‘thank you note’ to all the wonderful people of the Copper Corridor for their support this past two years that I have served as your State Senator. Because of the redistricting that took place earlier this year,

we are no longer in the same legislative district, something that I truly wish would not have happened (I am now in the western and southern portions of Pinal County and in northern Pima County). When you elected me I pledged to you that I

Letter to the Editor: A note from Senator Smithwould fight to balance our budget, to get our economy thriving again, and to lead the charge to secure our border and crack down on illegal immigration and I am pleased to say that I kept my promises. During my term, Arizona went from having a $1 billion+ deficit to now having a budget surplus, we passed the Jobs Bill and moved Arizona from almost last in the country in job creation to being a Top 10 state (as well as #1 in the nation in start-up businesses), and I authored the bill signed by the Governor that allows Arizona to construct our own border fence to

help protect our citizens, something the federal government has not done. Rest assure, just because we are technically no longer in the same district, please know that I will always fight on behalf of the Copper Corridor and will help or assist the community (or anyone in it) at any time, so please feel free to contact me 602-926-5685 or email me at [email protected]. Once again, it has been my sincere honor to represent you and this district, thank you, and God bless! Sincerely,/s/ Steve SmithState Senator

Last week’s monsoon storms caused cars to hydroplane and crash and sent great floods of water to close roads. In Mammoth on Wednesday, most of the town below Highway 77 was inaccessible due to flash flooding through the streets. Kino Street between the Little League field and the Pinal County Courthouse had to be cleared several times by Town of Mammoth crews due to the amount of dirt and rocks carried down the road by flash flooding. Likewise, Third Street and Main Street had to be cleared of the debris flooding waters brought down on those roads. One resident of Mammoth reported that she had recorded more than six inches of rainfall from Tuesday through Friday. In Dudleyville Thursday morning, standing water on Highway 77 caused one vehicle to hydroplane, spin out and land in a ditch. The driver was uninjured in the accident, but reported that at least one other vehicle

seemed to hydroplane in the same spot before its tires caught the pavement, avoiding a spin out and crash. In San Manuel Thursday, both Redington (Veterans Memorial Highway) at the San Manuel Airport road and Old Webb Road were closed after a flash flood washed across both roads, cutting off outside access to the town. Veterans Memorial Highway closed for a couple of hours until the waters subsided enough to allow traffic to cross. Webb Road remained closed for some time after. Last week’s storms wreaked havoc on Pinal County roads, including those that are under city jurisdiction. County Public Works crews have been busy moving muck, bulldozing debris, checking road conditions and reopening closed roads as quickly as possible. The only county road that remains closed at this time is River Road in the San Manuel area between Tom Rhodes and Redington because the San Pedro River is running through

By Vicki Clark When Helene Martinez graduated from Hayden High School, she felt her career path included either sports medicine or law enforcement. However, after taking a course in psychology, she found the subject so interesting her path took a turn and led her right back to Hayden. Martinez is working in the newly created position as Counselor/Parent-Liaison in the Hayden-Winkelman School District. Her duties include helping students with behavioral, emotional and social problems. “Generally anything that are kids problems in life,” she said. Her job as Parent-Liaison is to try to get more parents involved in school and community activities. She has plans to start a PTO and to bring in motivation and educational speakers, both for the students and their parents.

She also will be issuing a district wide newsletter to keep parents informed of what’s happening at school. Martinez first attended Eastern Arizona College on a softball scholarship. While there, she was named an Academic All American and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor society for community colleges. She transferred to the University of Arizona and graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in Sociology. She also was named to Psi Chi, a national honor society for psychology majors. While at the U of A, she took many different psychology courses including forensic abnormal and child abuse psychology. She also took classes in human behavior and law. It was after she took some leadership classes that she got interested in working

with kids. “These classes showed me how to be a better role model and offer direction and motivation so students can better themselves,” she said. Martinez said she could have chosen to work almost anywhere but she wanted to come back to Hayden because the schools and community did so much for her and she wanted to give back. “I want to try to make the students I work with realize that there is a life out there…but just remember where you come from,” she said The first seminar for parents is scheduled for Sept. 6 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the District Lobby. The subject regards safety in school and will be presented by the Community Outreach and Education Division. Information will soon Helene Martinez

be available about the PTO and volunteers are

being sought. Martinez is also available to answer

questions during school hours.

In an effort to educate parents and care givers, the Hayden Winkelman School District is hosting a parents’ seminar regarding safety in school on Sept. 6 at 4:00 p.m. in the district lobby. The program is presented by the Community Outreach and Education Division. Topics include Internet Safety, Substance Abuse, Sexting, Cyber-Predation and Cyber-Bulling. Parents and caregivers with concerns need to attend this meeting. This meeting is not confined to the H-W District. Everyone in the Copper Basin Area is invited to attend.

by Rosalind Padilla The Primary Election was yesterday, did you vote? The Candidate Forum was a great chance to meet twenty-two of the thirty-two running for offices throughout the Congressional District 1, Legislative District 8 and the Pinal County offices. Behind the scenes, the Ray Schools maintenance crew worked hard all day pumping out water that had run into the auditorium the night before. Moderator for the evening was Joe Fuerstenberg, Ray High Social Studies teacher. Each group of candidates drew lots for the order they were to speak. Group 1 consisted of Corporation Commission candidates Marcia Busching and

Christopher Gohl; Orlenda Roberts, County School Superintendent; Steven Boyd and Delores Doolittle, Pinal County Treasurer; James Walsh, Pinal County Attorney; Barbara Kelly, Recorder. Each of these candidates had three minutes each to introduce themselves and state their platform. Representing the newly formed Legislative District 8 were Ernest Bustamante, George Arredondo & Barbara McGuire. Each candidate had five minutes to introduce themselves and answer the following questions:(1) What is your position on bill 1070 including the Dream Act, (2) Our education system is in a crisis. By Nolberto Waddell The Lobo football coaches knew that the Lobo football team would be in for a tough time in their season opening game against a big and fast team from Ft. Thomas High School. The coaches prepared the team well but they were not prepared for the outcome of the game. The Lobo team dominated in every expect of the game except for the scoreboard that read Ft. Thomas 22, Hayden 14. The Lobos took the opening kick-off and were driving towards the goal line only to be stopped by the officials yellow flag, something that would happen often, and the interception of Roman Padilla first varsity pass. The Apaches did not hold the football for long turning the ball over when Robert Sandoval and Manny Armenta tackled the Apache runner for negative yards on a fourth down play.

The Apaches came back quick! The Apache quarterback went back to pass, found an open receiver hitting him for a 49 yard scoring pass and than hit his receiver for the two points to tie the game at 8 to 8 with 1:13 left in the first quarter. Hayden took the kick-off, started a drive that again would be stopped by the officials yellow flag forcing a Lobo punt to end the first quarter. The Lobo defense again held the Apache offense to three plays and a punt. The Lobos took over and drove down the field getting a first and goal just inside the ten yard line on a couple of pass completions from Padilla to Adrian Ochoa. With the football just inside the fifteen yard line due to a penalty, Padilla pitched the ball to Aaron Lagunas racing down the sideline for the fifteen yard score. Again, another fumble on the snap caused

the Lobos the two points giving them a 14 to 8 lead with 7:07 remaining in the first half. The Lobos took over and were driving down field when time ran out on the first half clock with the Lobos holding a 14 to 8 lead. The third quarter had the Lobos kicking off to the Apaches and again the Lobo defense came up strong stopping the Apaches on three plays forcing a punt. The Lobos took the football driving down to the forty-yard line and on the next play Aaron Lagunas broke free for a touchdown only to have it called back on an illegal hit penalty.

The fourth quarter started with the Lobos unable to move the football when hit with two penalty flags forcing a punt. Again, bad luck hit the Lobos! The snap to the punter was low in the ground and the Apaches tackled the punter before he could get a handle on the loose football at the 37-yard line. The Lobo football team will have their work cut out for them this coming Friday when they take the long trip to Duncan to take on the Wildkats and their tough running back who recorded five touchdowns in their game against Valley Union. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.

A Ray ball carrier attempts to evade two Panther defenders during Friday night’s Copper Helmet game. (James Carnes photo)

By Richard Bravo The Ray Bearcats opened the season with hopes of bringing the copper helmet back home but the Superior Panthers had other plans as they came away with a 34-12.. The game started with the Panthers receiving the opening kickoff on their own 30-yard line. The Bearcats looked sharp on defense, holding the Panthers to a four and out forcing the Panthers to punt away. The Bearcats started their first offensive possession from the 25-yard line, but with no luck in moving the ball, they went for a go four and out and were forced to punt. The Panthers found their groove on their second possession, as they struck first, scoring on a 34 yard screen pass putting them up 6-0 with the two-point conversion no good. On the pursuing kickoff, Joe Rudy Lorona put the Bearcats in good field position as he scrambled 30 yards to the Panther 46-yard-line. The Panthers defense denied the Bearcats any yards as they forced the Bearcats to punt once again with time winding down in the first quarter. With a bad snap on the Bearcat punt attempt, the Panthers recovered the ball deep in Bearcat territory and took their 6-0 lead into the end of the first quarter. The Panthers didn’t waste any time scoring starting the second quarter when their offense completed a short drive with a 14-yard pass to put them up 12-0. The two-point conversion failed with 10:40 left in the first half. With good field position on their own 45, the Bearcats were unable to get their offense going as they turned the ball over on downs after four plays with 8:34 left in the half. The Panthers capitalized on two 15-yard penalties by the Bearcats, putting

them on the 3-yard line. Two plays later, the Panthers crossed the goal line on a 3-yard run to put them up 20-0. They added the two point conversion to make the score 22-0 with 6:50 remaining in the first half. With another good run back by Lorona on the following kickoff, the Bearcats started their fourth possession of the game on their own 40. On the second play of the drive, quarterback Destry Yocum connected with receiver Dominic Bravo on a 40-yard pass to put the Bearcats in a good position for their first score of the game. After a couple of failed run attempts, the Bearcats got back to the air as Yocum found Seth Harmon in the corner of the end zone for a 12-yard pass putting the Bearcats on the board with 3:00 left in the first half. The extra point was blocked putting the score 22-6. With a little time left on the clock in the first half, the Panthers took advantage of some missed tackles by the Bearcats defense. This once again added another score to end the first half and the Panthers took a 28-6 lead into the locker room. The third quarter was all Panthers as they came out of the locker room determined to keep the Bearcats from making any type of comeback. The Panthers didn’t allow the Bearcat offense to gain any momentum as the Panther defense forced one fumble and three turnovers on downs to keep the Bearcats scoreless in the third quarter. The Panthers offense on the other hand, worked their way through the Bearcat defense to find the end zone one more time on a 15-yard pass to put them up 34-6 heading into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter of

Copper Helmet remains with Panthers play, the Bearcats got some offense going as their running game and passing game came alive. Running back Jacob Wernett found some running room and passes from Yocum to Bravo would get the Bearcats deep into Panther territory. On the tenth play of the drive, Yocum tucked

the ball and ran 13 yards on a quarterback keeper to make the score 34-12. The two-point conversion failed. The Bearcat defense held the Panther offense without another score, but it would be the Panthers prevailing 34-12 as the final second ticked off the clock.

In passing, Yocum threw for 165 yards on 13-23 pass attempts with no interceptions and one touchdown. On the receiving end for the Bearcats, Bravo had eight catches for 86 yards, Harmon had one catch for 12 yards and one touchdown and Wernett

had two catches for 51 yards. Wernett lead the rushing with 42 yards on six carries, Yocum had four rushes for 16 yards and one touchdown, Clarence Baptisto had 10 yards on three carries. Defensively the Bearcats were lead by Wernett with

have to insure financial changes statewide? Congressional District 1 included Patrick Gatti, Kim Allen and Clair Van Steenwyck. Their two questions were (1) We have heard about Obama Care, what changes do you plan to submit if any (2)We are in trillions of dollars in debt, what are your suggestions for balancing the National budget.

Alicia Bristow, Mary Espinoza Bateman and Pete Rios all running for Pinal County District Supervisor were asked to respond to (1) The San Pedro River Valley is of major concern for those living along this important water way. How do these discussions with the BLM concern Kearny residents (2) we seem to have many problems with water rights in Eastern Pinal County, what are your suggestions for helping the Copper Corridor solve these problems. Sheriff Candidates Kevin Taylor, Tyrone Morgan, Jack McClaren and Derek Arnson were asked the following questions: (1) The Sheriffs Dept seems to be under scrutiny on many issues, which are all related. Please explain your position on the counties immigration policy and its impact along with human and drug trafficking.(2) How can you ensure that the Copper corridor is recognized as being as important in Pinal County as all the cities and town in the western portion of the County? The ballot has narrowed down considerably for the November election. This is an important year to get out and VOTE.

By Joe PalmerPastor, Fellowship Baptist ChurchWe must agree with the most eminent philosophers that without God we have no reason for living, no reason for loving, and no future worth mentioning. There is one very obvious question to be asked, however. Is God good? A famous Christian psychologist by the name of Larry Crabb says that

if we have a healthy brain but suffer psychological problems it is because we have a serious misunderstanding about God’s goodness and our relationship with Him. He states unequivocally that, for healthy people, sin is at the heart of our emotional and relational problems. Sin is breaking the moral laws of God in an attempt to satisfy our own desires

because we doubt that God is good and willing to meet our needs. Crabb says it this way, “Our inclination to sin is rooted in the suspicion that God is not all that good. Doubting God’s goodness is the foundation of our fallen structure. If we believe God is powerful, we’re not convinced that he is kind because, if he can relieve our suffering, why doesn’t he?” So … is God good? Can He be trusted? The answer is YES! The shortest proof is the life and death of Jesus Christ for us. There is, however, a longer fuller explanation for how we know God is good, and that explanation centers on the metaphor of light and darkness. In this universal analogy of good and evil, light stands for goodness and darkness stands for

evil. Physical light always has a source. Darkness is simply the absence of light. Thus, goodness comes from God. He is the God of all grace. He is the source of all beauty and joy. Darkness explains evil as simply the absence of God’s goodness. From this simple metaphor, we can begin to understand why we suffer, and we can see clearly what we need to do if we want to be happy. To be genuinely happy, we must draw near to the source of happiness. We must be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. Then we need to live with Him – trusting Him, listening to Him, speaking with Him, and obeying what He tells us to do. I’m happy. Are you? Public NoticeHayden-Winkelman Schools Free and

Reduced Price Meals Hayden-Winkelman Schools has announced its policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program, Commodity School Program and/or School Breakfast Program. Each school and/or the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party. The household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility for free and reduced-price benefits. Children from households, whose income is at or below the guidelines are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Children who are members of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) households, Cash Assistance (CA) units or Food Distribution Program or the Indian Reservation (FDPIR) households are automatically eligible for free meals. SNAP/CA families will be certified by the determining official via Direct Certification. Foster children that are the legal responsibility of a welfare agency or court may also be eligible for benefits regardless of the income of their household with whom they reside. Eligibility for the foster child is based on the child's income. Application forms are being distributed to all households with a letter informing households of the availability of free and reduced-price meals for their children. Applications also are available at the principal's office in each school. To apply for free or reduced-price meals, households must fill out the application and return it to the school. The information households provide on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and verification of data. Applications must be verifies at any time during the school year by school or other program officials. Households which do not list an FDPIR case number must list the names of all household members, the amount and source of monthly income received by each household member, and the social security number of the adult household member who signs the application. If the household member signing does not have a social security number, he/she must indicate that a social security number is not available. An adult household member must sign the application. Under the provisions of the free and reduced-price policy Mr. Salvador Gallego will review applications and determine eligibility.
