Murdered granny Mamaila laid to restAn elderly woman, Mrs Nku-na Mamaila (71), who was set alight after allegations of witchcraft, was eventually laid to rest on Saturday at Ximausa village outside Giyani.

Her funeral was delayed as the community initially refused to allow her to be buried at the local cemetery. The headman later intervened and insisted that she should be buried in the village. Her family members, who were initially chased away from the village, went back home after spending a few days at the police station. Mrs Mamaila was ac-cused of being a witch in the vil-lage. She was allegedly set alight by a mob of community members two weeks ago. The community accused her of being a witch who had cursed her neighbour’s child, Mr Blondie Maswanganyi (23), to commit suicide. Nineteen sus-pects appeared in the Hlanganani Magistrate’s Court last Thursday and 11 of them were released pursuant to a lack of evidence linking them to the incident. On Friday (February 21) eight suspects who were remanded in custody were released on R500 bail each. A Greater Giyani

municipal ward councillor, Cllr Tsakani Maluleke, said it was a relief that the situation was final-ly under control. She said most of those engaged in the incident were young people. “Pupils were not going to school. At least now everything is back to normal,” she said. Witch-hunting is a serious offence in South Africa. The Witchcraft Suppression Act of 1957 criminalises numerous actions that can lead to a fine of R40 000 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 20 years. The Act criminalises accusing any person of causing, by su-pernatural means, any disease, injury, damage or calling anyone a wizard.

It states that, in circumstances indicating that the accused per-son professes or pretends to use supernatural power, witchcraft, sorcery (magic), attributes the cause of death, injury or grief, damage or disappearance of anyone can lead the offender to imprisonment or a fine.

Prof Kopano Ratele from Institute for Social and Health Sciences of Unisa described the incident as a terrible indictment that usually occurs in African

communities. He added that the young man would probably have suffered from depression, leading to suicide. “Research over the past years shows that depression, especially a sense of hopeless, often leads to suicide. Depression would probably have been caused by emotional, social, and mental problems. A person’s economic situation can lead to depression in deprived communities - this is not a unique case,” he said.

He said the consulted sangoma was the main problem in the whole debacle. “There are other sangomas who, instead of help-ing people, add to the problem. We all know that the factual nature of their knowledge is not scientifically proven. Though it’s a culture that most Africans do not want to give up on, it is advisable for people not just to act on sangomas’ superstitions,” he said.

He acknowledged that the vil-lage’s headman should be com-mended for his efforts to show his community members a realistic perspective of the situation.

Ratele has almost 10 years’ experience of researching issues related to witchcraft.

Four lives lost in gruesome accidentsTwo children burn to death at Khumbe

Police seize illegal cigarettes iin Nzhelele

It would seem the Elim road is rivalling the Vivo road for the title “Road of Death”, fol-lowing a recent spate of fatal road accidents.

In a matter of days, four peo-ple were killed in two separate accidents along the Elim road, just outside of Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

Last week, the Zoutpans-berger reported on the R522 (Vivo road), which now has the “Road of Death” label among locals, due the dilapidated state in which the road currently finds itself.

A similar state of affairs is also to be found on the Elim road. As is the case with the R522, recent heavy rainfalls did not help to improve the driving conditions on this road either.

The fatal accidents alongside the Elim road were preceded by an accident along the N1 south on Wednesday, 19 February. A consultant working on the N1, Mr Rassie Erasmus (53), was killed while driving in his Nissan X-Trail back from the Lalapanzi Hotel. Erasmus col-lided head-on with an oncoming

Members of the community of Khumbe village are mourning the death of two young chil-dren, aged 13 and 7, who died in a fire last Friday night.

Thanyani Ndou and Konanani Mulovhedzi, who were attached to the Munna Ndi Nnyi project as children from vulnerable backgrounds, burned to death while they were sleeping inside the shack of Thanyani’s mother, Ms Pinky Ndou (28).

Konanani’s mother, Ms Joyce Mulovhedzi (40), said that she was not sure what had caused the fire. Ndou and a friend were passing in the street to the other side of the village on Saturday morning, when they noticed that the two-room shack had been gutted by the fire.

“We couldn’t see anything apart from the mess of burnt corrugated sheets, charred poles, door frames and some pots,” said a weepy Ndou.

The matter was reported to the police, who responded by coming

to collect evidence at the scene. The director of Munna Ndi

Nnyi, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, said that the centre had lost two lovely young children who were always joyful and ready to social-ise with other kids. “These kids, our own children, died while they were sleeping unsupervised in a shack, alone in that yard,” Mufunwaini said. “What does that tell us as the community and organisations which care for children?”

He said that it was high time that the Department of Social De-velopment and other stakeholders considered funding organisations which looked after children, with funds to build full-time homes for these children. “Children would only be allowed to visit parents or families during school holidays, and only when those coming to collect them had promised to take good care of them during that space of time,” said Mufunwaini.

Vhamusanda Vho-Mukh-wathisi Tshikovhokovho ex-

pressed his shock about the death of the two children. “They died a very painful death,” he said. “We are hurting as a community. This is too much for us. We comfort the affected family.”

Limpopo’s police spokesper-son, Col Ronél Otto, confirmed the incident. “A case of arson has been opened,” Otto said. “The children were trapped in the house and they died in the blaze. An inquest case was opened to look into the cause of the death of the children.” Col Otto added that no arrests had been made so far, and that the cause of the fire was still being investigated.

Thanyani was in Grade 7 at Muthule Primary School, while Konanani was doing Grade 2 at Tshikovhokovho Primary School. Both schools sent mes-sages of condolence to the ag-grieved family.

The two pupils will be buried on Saturday at Tshalovha cem-etery. The funeral services will start at 07:00.

Two vehicles ferrying illegal cigarettes were seized by the police in Nzhelele last Wednes-day (February 19). The police have confirmed that cigarettes worth an estimated R700 000 were confiscated.

After receiving a tip-off, the police acted swiftly to search

for the vehicles that were pass-ing from Musina through the Nzhelele area. The first vehicle was spotted in Ha-Musekwa village and the other one in Tsh-iswenda village.

When confronted, both drivers of the vehicles ran away from the scene and no one was arrested.

According to a police spokesper-son, attempts were later made to steal the vehicles from the police station.

“We sent those vehicles to the South African Revenue Services (SARS) in Musina,” said Mphe-phu police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati.

Zimbabwean bus and was killed upon im-pact. No passengers from the bus were se-riously injured.

The first accident along the Elim road, w h i c h h a p p e n e d around 06:00 on Sun-day (23rd), claimed the lives of three peo-ple. At the time of going to press, their names were still being withheld by the police while their families were being notified.

According to infor-mation supplied by the Makhado Fire Bri-gade, all three people died on the accident

scene. The cause of the accident could also not be determined, but it would seem that the driver might have lost control over his vehicle, possibly because of a pothole in the road.

On Monday, the Elim road claimed its fourth victim.

This accident was caused when a local petrol tanker al-legedly swerved to avoid a series of potholes in the road and collided head-on with an oncoming Eskom service bak-kie. The truck was travelling towards Makhado (Louis Trich-ardt) from Elim, and the Eskom bakkie in the opposite direction. The collision occurred about 6km from the Drie Myl turn-off.

Upon impact, the Eskom bakkie overturned, ending up halfway under the front of the tanker. Both occupants of the Eskom bakkie were pinned inside the cab. Rescue workers had to make use of the jaws of life to free them from the wreck-age and both were rushed to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hos-pital. The driver was declared dead upon arrival there. His co-worker, who was seriously

injured, received medical care and is expected to make a full recovery.

Local residents who regu-larly travel on the Elim road were outraged after Monday’s accident. Complaints about the state of the road streamed in at the newspaper.

Shortly after the accident, the newspaper noticed a team of workers who had hastily put up a road block while they busied themselves with fixing some the potholes closest to the turn-off. Some of these workers were questioned, but they refused to give out details about their work or even the contact details of a manager or company spokes-person.

The newspaper discovered in the meantime, however, from a reliable source that this compa-ny should have already started maintenance work on the Elim road during the last quarter of 2013. The company is expected to finish their maintenance work by 14 March. At this stage, the newspaper is busy tracking down the company for media comment.

Rescue workers had to make use of the Jaws of Life to free two Eskom employees from their bakkie after it was it by a petrol carrying truck, and they got pinned inside the wreckage. The driver of the bakkie later passed away in the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital.

Woman killed because she was “goblin”

Struggling Marhumeke family to get a proper house soon

A 36-year-old woman from Ngoma village outside Beit Bridge suffered a painful death after she was allegedly axed to death by a fellow villager, who claimed that he thought the deceased was a goblin that had invaded his hut.

Police spokesperson Asst Insp Christopher Ngwenya said the incident occurred on Sunday at about 20:00. “We are handling a case where a 36-year-old woman was axed by a fellow villager in Ngoma village, after he assumed she was an intruder in his home,” he said.

The victim was identified as Nomathemba Ncube and the suspect is an 81-year-old man.

“On 23 February, at around 20:00, the victim retired to bed

with her mother. Her mother, Ms Grace Mtshede, waited until Nomathemba, who was men-tally unstable, was fast asleep. At around 23:00, Nomathemba woke up and went to the old man’s hut and entered through a door that was not locked.

Ngwenya added that the de-ceased’s mother did not notice that she had left the room as she was sleeping. It is alleged that the old man had heard some noises in his hut and he armed himself with an axe.

He spotted Nomathemba and allegedly struck her twice on the head with the axe.

According to the police report, Nomathemba screamed loudly before she fell unconscious. Her screams attracted her mother and

another villager, who found her lying on the veranda, with the axe still stuck in her head.

Ngwenya said the suspect had since been arrested and was still assisting police with investiga-tions. He will soon appear in court on a murder charge.

“In this incident, the deceased person had a mental condition. If we have people like this in our families they should be taken for check-ups regularly, so that they get medical attention. We also urge people in rural communi-ties to have secure homes. They should lock their doors at night and avoid people straying into their homes at night,” he said.

Villagers who spoke to Lim-popo Mirror said the suspect was in deep grief after the incident.

The Marhumekes’ pain and frus-tration of not having a shelter over their heads will soon come to an end as the contractor is busy building a house for this indigent family.

The Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) department hired Rhulani Construction to build the Marhumeke’s family an RDP house in Mambedi-Valdezia. The project developer at Dingatana Supplies and Services, Mr Tumelo Nthulwane, said that the project would be completed

within three weeks to allow the family to move into their new house.

“We are trying all our best to speed up the project,” Nthulwane said on Tuesday.

The family of six had been without a stable shelter after a storm destroyed their shack in October 2012. After the disaster, the local Sanco reported the family’s case to the ward committee, so that the committee could alert Cllr Alpheus Mmbadi of Ward 28 about the case. Mbadi said that he hadn’t received any report from the ward

committee or local Sanco each time Limpopo Mirror contacted him for comment. Mambedi-Valdezia falls within the jurisdiction of Makhado Municipality.

Ms Maria Marhumeke expressed her joy during Limpopo Mirror’s visit on Tuesday. “I am very, very happy to see these people building the house for us,” she said. “It has been a hard journey of pain and frustration for us to find our eyes finally seeing this house rising from the ground.”

Meanwhile, Maria, who is un-

Local Sanco chairperson Ms Maria Ndekeni said that she was relieved that the painful journey to have either Coghsta or Makhado Municipality build the Marhumeke family a house finally bore good fruits.

Minister Bathabile Dlamini and Chief Livhuwani Matsila, fitting new school shoes for young Khanano Mulaudzi.

From left to right are Thovhele Vho-Nthumuni Masia, Wisani Mkhari (receiving school shoes from Minister Bathabile Dlamini), acting Vhembe District Mayor Dorcus Mmbooi and Chief Livhuwani Matsila, with some other dignitaries looking on from the back.

The Minister of Social Development, Bathabile Dlamini, recently presented shool uniforms to more than 200 disadvantaged pupils selected from 22 schools within the Makhado Munici-pality’s jurisdiction.

The handing-over ceremony was held at the Joe Matsila guest house. Apart from the uniforms, the girls also received sanitary towels, pants, tooth-brushes and toothpaste. Dlamini further promised to give a computer to each of the 22 schools.

Dlamini said the main aim of the spon-sorship was to ensure that children did not miss out on schooling because they did not have uniforms. She also invited people to call her if they knew about incidents where parents were misusing the social grants meant for their children.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila of the Matsila Community said the distribution of school shoes by Minister Dlamini would en-courage children to study hard at school. He said there would no longer be any excuse for children to drop out of school because of problems in getting uniforms.

Mr Alex Riganga, an immigrant from Tanzania, is frustrated after losing his passport around Makhado (Louis Trichardt) on 19 February. His passport number is AB376367. He is appealing to members of the community who might have picked it to call him at 082 765 2906.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has availed US$30, 000 towards the funding of youth-empowerment and economic-develop-ment programmes in the Beit Bridge district.

The Beit Bridge Youth Development Officer, Mr Elphas Siziba, told Limpopo Mirror that the funding would be channelled towards cattle-rearing and -fattening projects, targeting 50 unemployed youths from the district in 12 rural wards. He add-ed that the beneficiaries of the programme would soon undergo formal training on basic business management skills at a local Guyu Vocational Training Centre.

“We are working with the ILO in creating em-ployment and improving self-sustenance among the youths. We expect the cattle-rearing project to take off at the end of this month,” he said.

Siziba said that in February last year, the ILO availed US$54, 000 for similar initiatives in the neighbouring Gwanda and Insiza districts as a pilot project.

He added that the funding scheme sought to benefit 100 beneficiaries from the three districts and that the projects would be officially commissioned later this year. “This year we decided to spread the programme to Beit Bridge. Basically, we are train-ing these youths in proper business-management skills and we also give them start-up capital, which

we will recoup when they start reaping the fruits of the projects,” said Siziba.

He said efforts were

under way to engage other development partners towards ensuring economic and sustainable devel-opment for the youths.

A SANParks (South Africa Na-tional Parks) employee tasked with the safeguarding of wild animals has allegedly been selling these animals to game hunters.

The SANParks employee, who has allegedly been selling ani-mals to game hunters by means of fake permits, appeared before the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday, 17 February, where he was official charged.

Michael Sematla was arrested on 27 January, following sev-eral months of investigation by the SANParks Environmental Crime Investigative Unit. The help of the unit was called in, said SANParks spokesperson Mr

Ike Phaahla, when a giraffe car-cass was found with three bullet wounds in the Den Staat, which is an open-system park.

Sematla worked as a general worker for the Mapungubwe National Park, which is also a world heritage site and borders on Den Staat.

Both parks border on Zimba-bwe and boast a great variety of small and big game.

Sematla allegedly used SAN-Parks stationery to mislead pro-fessional hunters and game meat operators to hunt on Den Staat. As many as 16 groups a day would hunt illegally on Den Staat and Sematla also allegedly issued permits for the hunting

of leopards and other protected animals.

During Sematla’s court ap-pearance, 11 hunters who had been issued the alleged fake permits also attended court.

They will not face further prosecution on account of their paying admission-of-guilt fines. Fines to the value of R37 000 were issued. The newspaper has learned that some of these hunters might later be asked to become State witnesses and testify against Sematla, who is facing several charges of the illegal hunting.

Sematla is currently out on bail, and will have to appear in court again on 7 March.

An elderly man is living in ab-ject poverty at Mambedi, some 13km outside Elim. His only shelter is half a wall built in a semi-circle and his rain-soaked blankets.

The remains of Mr Phineas Nkuna’s mud hut stand stubborn-ly amid a throng of mealie stalks and pawpaw, banana and mango trees. “Swanitarafa has nowhere else to stay,” he explained in this odd fashion, but his tone of voice was sad. “Swanitarafa is unhappy about his living conditions, and he is hungry.”

“Swanitarafa” loosely trans-lated means a person with a flustered mind because there are too many problems in his life beyond his ability to solve. “I can’t get used to the pain of not having a proper place to stay,” he said.

Swani tara-fa still refers to Zimbabwe as Rhodesia, and he speaks of the North-ern Transvaal and all those o l d n a m e s . “I worked on a f a rm nea r [Musina] with people f rom [Zimbabwe] , and they stole my ID book,” he said. “I came to live here in the mid-1980s, but things fell

apart when my thatch-roofed room collapsed last year.”

Old man Swanitarafa’s neigh-bour and cousin, Mr Phineas Makhuvele, said that he had invited Swanitarafa to come and stay with him after his shelter had fallen apart. “He refused and said that he couldn’t move out and leave his many fruit trees without anyone to look after them. This season’s rain fell on him as he slept in that thing he calls his house, and he has been coughing ever since the first rain fell in October last year. We ask Limpopo Mirror’s readers to help this man; he’s suffered enough.”

According to Makhuvele, Swanitarafa’s younger sister receives an old-age government grant, but Swanitarafa does not because he doesn’t have an ID

book. “I choose to live in my own yard rather than to become another person’s burden,” Swan-itarafa explained. “I do piece jobs for survival, but dogs from around here tear my plastics of food into pieces.”

He pointed at a white sub-stance on the wet floor. “That’s the mealie meal I bought three days ago. Dogs did what they wanted with it. Dogs are cruel; they act as if they don’t see my suffering. They are the ones who make me suffer like this.”

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Lou-is Bobodi, said that neither Cllr Alpheus Mmbadi (Ward 28) nor the municipality was aware of Swanitarafa’s living conditions. “I have made him aware and he is going to investigate,” he said.

Sinugani High School honour their top achieversPupils of Sinugani High School at Magau village were urged to look at the certificates, trophies and medals which they had been awarded for best academic performance as reminders for them to work harder.

The school management rewarded the 25 pupils for their achievements and 13 teachers for producing a 100% pass rate in different subjects for the 2013 academic year during an event held at the school's grounds on Thursday.

Among the guests were parents and repre-sentatives of communi-ty structures.

“Don't throw the trophies away; don't store the certificates inside the drawers or envelopes,” said moti-vational speaker Pastor Willie Mphilo. “Place the medals near your school books where you can see them every day. They will remind you to dedicate more time to your studies.”

Mphilo urged pupils to manage their time between school and so-cial life in a way that would benefit them. He told them to visit libraries to study and forget about a lifestyle of abusing drugs and al-cohol. “Success doesn't just come to people; you've got to work hard from now on,” he said.

The principal, Mr Sunnyboy Masuka, praised the teachers and pupils who received awards and said that they should continue to work together. “The purpose of the awards

is to motivate pupils to continue to work harder,” said Masuka. “Our experience at this school is that we stand a better chance of producing good results when we moti-vate learners and educators. These people need appreciation.”

A Grade 12 pupil who was awarded

for his good Grade 11 results, Amandla Khumalo, expressed his joy and appre-ciation. “I am not going to look back any more,” said Amandla. “I want to see my-self going to university like my brothers and sisters from our school, who worked well last year.”

40 YEARS IN BUSINESS!

Chief Solomon Dikgale.

The chairperson of the Limpopo House of Tra-ditional Leaders, Chief Solomon Dikgale, was proud to mention that they had not experienced any fatalities during last year's 142 initiation school ceremonies. In other provinces, such as Mpumalanga, dozens of children died.

Dikgale was addressing the media at a recent me-dia conference held at the offices of the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs. He said the initiation school where 30 initiates had died, was under the control of the Amatebele king. "Some people were confused because some of the initiation school leaders who were involved in the Mpumalanga problems stay in Limpopo," he said.

“We are proud to announce that our schools were death free last year. This year, initiation schools are scheduled to commence on the 20th of June and end on the 18th of July. The closing date for submission of applications to conduct initiation schools for the year 2014 is 28 February 2014," he said.

The House of Traditional Leaders will conduct a workshop for all Senior Traditional Leaders who qualify for initiation school permits. The purpose of the workshop is to brief and prepare the initiation school stakeholders on precautionary measures to be followed in order to have a smooth process during the initiation period. The workshop is scheduled to take place on 18 March.

“We also call upon parents to verify the legiti-macy of the initiation schools they intend to send their children to with their respective traditional authorities. There will be zero tolerance for people who want to take chances by running initiation schools without permits,” he said.

No traditional surgeon or any other person is allowed to perform rituals in an initiation school without a certificate of fitness issued for that purpose by a registered medical practitioner, au-thorized by the Premier or authorized officer. No traditional nurse or any other person is allowed to look after initiates at an initiation school without a certificate of attendance of training.

"In an effort to prevent the unnecessary loss of

No fatalities at 2013’s initiation schoolsLimpopo’s finances “back on track”lives, we request parents to send their children to the initiation schools that will be approved after 28 February 2014,” said Dikgale.

The police arrested 10 more people last Thurs-day in connection with the recent protests in the area. During the protests, people set alight four houses, a spaza shop, two police vehicles and two vehicles, one of a person the community allege is involved in a suspected ritual murder.

Members of the community demanded the arrest of nine people whom they suspect of being behind the murder of the 38-year-old Mavhungu Ramadzhamba of Kutama. More than 100 sus-pects were arrested for public violence, relating to the community protests last month.

Forty-six suspects appeared in the Tshil-wavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on the 4th of this month, while several minors were released by the police.

The suspects face charges of arson, public violence, theft and malicious damage to property. The 10 suspects who were arrested last Thurs-day appeared in court on Friday and they were released and warned to appear in court again on 7 April with the other 46 suspects.

The provincial police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said that the police inves-tigations were continuing and that they would possibly arrest more suspects.

Premier Stanley Mathabatha said the provincial govern-ment’s systems were running smoothly again when he opened the provincial legislature in Lebowakgomo last Thursday.

Five provincial departments, namely roads and transport, health and social development, the treasury, public works and education were placed under administration in December 2011, after it was discovered that there was a high level of financial mismanagement in the provincial departments. At the time, the provincial government had an overdraft of R2,7 billion.

Mathabatha was appointed as Limpopo Premier in July

2013, after the resignation of Mr Cassel Mathale. “I am proud to announce that the province had improved to a positive cash position of R4,4 billion at the end of January this year. I can assure the people of Limpopo that all is well and the provincial financial system is in good standing,” he added.

He said the province had re-duced the un-employment rate by 2.2% from 19.1% to 16.9% between 2012 and last year. He em-phasised that h i s gove rn -

ment was committed to the fight against corruption.

“We can say without fear of contradiction that we have taken our gloves off and we are push-ing hard against corruption. To date, about 300 civil servants, including high-ranking officials, have either been charged or face corruption-related charges,” Mathabatha added.

Former Venda parliamentarian passes away Kind donation from Malamulele’s madodanaA large number of people paid their last respects during the burial of well-known busi-nessman, community builder and sports developer Mr Jessie Ntanganedzeni Muthige of Thohoyandou Unit E, Hama-gidi, on Saturday.

Muthige (78) was born on 13 May 1936 at Dzimauli-Mu-tavhanani village outside Mu-tale. He started his school life at Tshifudi Primary in 1945 and completed his secondary edu-cation at Mphaphuli Secondary in 1955.

He completed his teaching qualification at the Vendaland Training Institute (Tshisimani Teacher’s College) in 1957.

He taught at Ngovhela, Mulen-

zhe, Tswinga, Tshakhuma, and Phaswana, among others.

He was a member of the then Venda National Assembly, chair-person of the Thohoyan-dou Business Forum, the owner of taxi services and he owned a restaurant in Thohoyandou, which is in operation currently.

Muthige loved sports, in particular soccer, and he cut his sport admin-istration teeth when he served as secretary for Sibasa Fast Eleven in the 70s. He was also a key establisher of Tshipako Black Leopards FC, now Black Leopards, in 1983.

Muthige passed away

on 15 February, after a long ill-ness. He is survived by his wife, Vho-Chianzi, four daughters and one son and 11 grandchildren.

Members of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Africa said they were following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, when its men’s guild in Mal-amulele went to a school for disabled children and gave them uniforms to the value of R55 000.

The money was collected by the madodana (senior male church members) in Malam-ulele.

The chairman of the church in Malamulele, Mr Ronald Muth-ambi, said this was part of the go-back-to-school campaign. “In the past our ladies, the Presbyterian Women’s Guild,

were the only active ones in community matters, but now we have come out of our comfort zone and are doing something to change the mindset of our fellow men,” said Muthambi.

He said that the church be-came involved in community matters in 2011. Last year they provided clothing to the value of more than R100 000 to children at the Tshilidzi Special School. “In June, we are going to spend a day with inmates of a prison, and we will have meals pre-pared outside the prison with them,” he said.

The church’s goodwill was praised by Chief Shilungwa

Mhinga and the school’s prin-cipal, Mr Khazamula Khosa. “This is God’s work that you have done and you have fol-lowed in the footsteps of others who have visited the school to lend a hand,” said Khosa.

Dr Gerson Rambiyana, the senior district manager of education in Vhembe, said that the department valued the con-tribution of the church highly and would work closely with the church in future. Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi said the government appreciated the church’s work in praying for the leadership, for peace and for the reduction of accidents.

Contract workers, employed by the Makhado Municipality, could be seen clearing grass on the street edges in Joubert Street on 20 February in order to preserve the road surface.

Suffering Rendani needs urgent medical helpWhen Rendani Luruli (30) from Matangari developed a pimple near her right eye three years ago, she did not know that it would take a turn for the worse one day.

According to Rendani, the pimple became very itchy. She was taken to Tshilidzini Hospital and later trans-ferred to Mankweng. She said she was told that she was suffering from cancer. ”I wanted them to remove my eye, but they refused and now I’m in pain.

She said the pimple kept growing and was very painful, so she went back to Tshilidzini for treatment. “Since then, I have consulted several doctors, including those at Mankweng Hospital, without success. My mother died two years ago and my father

passed on in 1995.”She feels that the health department

failed her as they had been promising her that she would get an operation since 2012. “I need help, and I am in pain. I have no one to help me financially and I cannot afford the operation,” she said.

When Limpopo Mirror visited Rendani, she was at home with her brother, Tsumbedzo Luruli, who is not working but is taking care of her.

Rendani now covers her face with a soft cloth to ensure that it does not get exposed to the sun. She is appealing to anyone who can assist her to come forward as she is unemployed. She was a hairdresser and enjoyed her work, but now all her dreams of own-ing a beauty parlour are shattered .

The chief of Vhembe Fire and Rescue Services, Mr Mmbangiseni Tshivhase (far left), hands over a fire beater to one of the trainees, while Chief Randima (far right) receives a similar instrument from fire official Mr David Rasivhaga.

About 150 community mem-bers from Khubvi, Makonde and surrounding villages re-ceived certificates in veld fire fighting from the Vhembe Fire and Rescue Services and the Tshikondeni Coal Mine two weeks ago.

Communities were urged to volunteer and assist in the fighting of veld fires among themselves before the arrival of Fire and Rescue Services.

Khubvi and Makonde villag-es outside Thohoyandou were identified as places where such

fires always erupted and where the Vhembe Fire and Rescue Service took a long time to ar-rive, as it is based in Muledane, far from Khubvi and Makonde.

The traditional leader of the area, Chief Thinawanga Randi-ma, involved the communities in volunteering to help fight veld fires themselves as soon as they erupted. “We developed the idea to fight veld fires and prevent the burning down of community houses as a result of paraffin lamps' exploding ourselves. We approached Vhembe Fire

and Rescue Services to help train volunteering communities with the skills to fight fire,” said Randima.

“We applaud the communi-ties of Khubvi and Makonde vil-lages for taking responsibility to fight fires themselves. We urged other communities to learn from what these villages have done.”

One of the trainees who re-ceived basic training in fire-fighting, Ms Sedzani Sivhabu, said they would be responsible citizens, fighting veld fires as soon as they erupted.

In the early hours of Monday morning another business fell prey to the ongoing scourge of housebreaking and commercial robbery in the Nzhelele area.

Under the cover of darkness, unknown criminals robbed a filling station of an estimated amount of R200 000. They al-legedly gained access to the fill-ing station’s back room through the window.

According to a police report, they allegedly smashed the win-dow, got inside and threatened the woman who was inside, with a firearm.

They allegedly forced her at gunpoint to go to the store room and open the safe.

Then the robbers took the money and vanished into thin air. The incident occurred at around 02:00.

A case of commercial robbery was opened at the Mphephu police station.

“We spent almost three hours, until dawn, searching for the sus-pects, but we did not find anyone. We are pleading with anyone who might have information to contact their nearest local police station,” said Mphephu police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Net-shidzati.

Clearing agent allegedly steals truckA customs clearing agent based at Beit Bridge Border Post al-legedly preyed on his ill client to steal from him a haulage truck carrying 34 tonnes of cobalt which was destined for South Africa.

Police spokesperson Chief Supt Patrick Majuta said the clearing agent, working in ca-hoots with two other suspects, drove off with the truck after stealing the ignition keys from the driver, Christopher Chitauro (50), who was admitted at Beit Bridge District Hospital while suffering from malaria last Fri-day. The truck was coming from the DRC.

Majuta said Chitauro had hired the clearing agent to process the documents for him after he had fallen ill.

"Preliminary investigations reveal that Chitauro, who is em-ployed by Schaso Solutions in Lubumbashi in the DRC, arrived

in Zimbabwe on 13 February en route to South Africa.

He was carrying a consign-ment of cobalt destined for South Africa and engaged the suspect to facilitate the customs clearance," Majuta said.

"He then fell sick the following day while waiting for the docu-ments to be processed." Majuta said the clearing agent then rushed Chitauro to Beit Bridge District Hospital, where he was admitted.

He said later that day the suspect visited Chitauro at the hospital around 17:00 in the company of two unknown men. "The trio then stole the ignition keys from the victim and went to the truck shop and drove off. They drove the truck to South Africa after processing all the required customs documents," said Majuta.

He said the issue came to light when Chitauro asked one of his

friends who had visited him at the hospital to collect some money from the truck.

The friend realised that the vehicle had vanished the previ-ous night.

A report was made to the police, who then launched a manhunt for the suspects. "We sent teams to check on toll gates on both the Masvingo and Bula-wayo Highways. Another team went to South Africa, where they recovered the truck parked at a truck shop in Musina. The consignment was still intact," Majuta said.

"The suspects fled on learning that the matter was now under investigation."

Majuta added that the trio was still at large and appealed to community members to assist the police with information that could lead to the arrest of the criminals. The value of the con-signment is yet to be ascertained.

Mobile laboratories for rural schools

Ms Judy Poo, project manager of the Telkom Foundation (centre), presents MYLAB Kit to Ms Carol Baloyi from Adolf Mhinga High School and Mr Freddy Thovhakale from Litshovhu Secondary.

Pupils from rural schools in the Limpopo’s Vhembe region were urged to develop an in-terest in the fields of maths and science to prepare themselves for the work force, so that they can be employable.

The call came from Telkom Foundation when handing over MY LAB Kits (mobile laborato-ries) for 30 rural schools during an event held at the Life Science Centre of the University of Venda a fortnight ago Wednesday.

“Maths and sciences open doors of learning and some of the world’s most lucrative and rewarding jobs are rooted in science and maths. Astronomy,

food science, geography and sound engineering all require a qualification in science,” said the project manager for the Telkom Foundation, Ms Judy Poo.

Poo applauded the joint ven-ture between Telkom Foundation and the University of Venda to help identify rural schools in the Vhembe region which need to promote maths and science subjects.

“Students study with our bur-saries. Pupils discover the power of the Internet with our equip-ment and our network, while teachers sharpen their skills by participating in our programmes. MYLAB Kits put the neces-

sary apparatus at the disposal of teachers, and allow them to do the practical work in maths and sciences which are scarce resources,” she added.

One of the teachers who re-ceived MYLAB Kits on behalf of the pupils, Mr Albert Mabasa from Shingwedzi Secondary near Malamulele, was over the moon to learn that his school and others are the beneficiaries of the Tel-kom Foundation. He said pupils really needed good equipment to be able to produce the best results in maths and sciences. “The do-nation of mobile laboratories will help pupils in the deep rural areas these regard,” he added.

Another reggae hit for Vha-AceBangladeshi businessman assaulted and robbedHis real name is Mpfariseni Col-bert Tshisaphungo, but he is widely known by his stage name, Vha-Ace.

Born at Ngovhela village 34 years ago, Vha-Ace introduced himself to the music industry in 2000. At that stage he was a mere dancer for Khakhathi and Friends.

In 2004, Vha-Ace felt that he was mature enough to stand on his own. He went solo and started to compile reggae songs. According to him, some people stole his songs under the pretense that they were going to introduce him to big recording companies before he could record them. It was at that stage that Vha-Ace told himself that he would never sing again. “But because music is part of my life, I started to compile more songs in 2010,” he said.

In 2011 he went to the GTP Re-cording Studio in Johannesburg and his debut album, First born, was re-corded. It was the songs such as Judicial house, Ni nnzhia hani, Africa and Pimpi which made the album an instant hit with fans. Accompa-nied by his group, The Rasta Elders, Vha-Ace went back to the same recording company the following year.

That was when he re-corded his second album, Lidoda Duvha. Most of the reggae music lov-ers will remember the album because of the song, Pholisa. The song

is about a corrupt police officer who makes case dockets disappear for a bribe.

Vha-Ace released his third al-bum, Vho vha vho tshinyani, three weeks ago. The new release con-sists of ten songs. It is selling like hot cakes, despite the fact that it is self-marketed. Some of the songs which are driving the fans crazy are Door mat, Tshelede, The harder, Judas and the title song, Vho vha vho tshinyani.

Vha-Ace said that the illegal copying of music is keeping most musicians poor, despite the fact that their music is played everywhere.

To promote his new album, Vha-Ace will performing live at various places throughout the province. He appealed to musicians to remain united, despite the fact that the rate of piracy is skyrocketing day after day. Vha-Ace can be contacted at 072 992 2569 for bookings.

A Bangladeshi immigrant and busi-nessman in Hlanganani township, Mr Mahafuzur Rahamaw (28), has been experiencing crime at least twice every five months over the past two years.

His latest blow came when two thugs mugged him while he was walking to-wards his parked car after closing his busi-ness, Khwiyimani Shop, at around 20:00 on Friday. They hit him on the head and neck with a bottle of beer and he fell down. When he tried to get to his feet, the thugs kicked him in the ribs. They demanded the daily takings, but he had no cash on him. Then they took his mobile phone.

“They told me to keep quiet or else they would kill me,” said a traumatised Rahamaw. “As they assaulted me, I felt much pain and screamed.”

A resident heard a cry outside and came to investigate, armed with his pistol. When he found that the businessman whom he knew was being robbed, he fired a warning shot and the criminals ran away.

The police were called and a case of common robbery was opened.

“I don’t like what is happening here,” Rahamaw said. “We work hard to fill our shops with stock but tsotsis come to rob us. Last November, four armed tsotsis broke

into my house and robbed us of property and R10 000 cash.”

Rahamaw feels that the police should do more. “Tsotsis walk the streets of the township freely as if they are untouchable beings,” he said. “I have reported nearly all the cases each time tsotsis have robbed me, but nothing happened after that.”

A resident, Mr Max Nukeri, said that Rahamaw had brought business closer to the people. “If he gets tired of crime and finally closes his business, we will have to travel several kilometres for other shops which sell the kind of things he sells,” Nukeri said.

Mr Mahafuzur Rahamaw (left) sells a loaf of bread to a customer, Mr Max Nukeri.

Mr Mahafuzur Rahamaw says that he has had enough of crime.

Mother charged with murder of baby

Phalaphala FM celebrates 49 successful years

The mother of the four-month-old baby who was found in a drum full of water was arrested this week in connection with the death of the little girl.

According to a spokesperson for the police, the incident took place at Tsianda village. The mother initially reported the baby missing.

The 20-year-old Elekanyani Tshinyage allegedly went to a nearby spaza shop to purchase airtime, leaving the baby in bed

alone. It was reported that when she arrived back home, the baby was no longer there. She was later found floating in a drum of water.

Initially, an inquest case was opened but has now been changed to a charge of murder.

Levubu police spokesper-son W/O Solly Mukhola said they had been suspicious of the mother.

“We were very surprised when we were told of the circum-stances under which the baby

died. The little girl was only four months old and it is quite surprising how the baby ended in a drum of water. We were suspicious all the time until our investigations positively linked the mother to the baby’s death and we subsequently arrested her,” said Mukhola.

He said the mother appeared in court and her case was postponed to 20 March. She mother has been charged with murder and she remains in custody.

Listeners of Phalaphala FM were treat-ed to an exhibition of old broadcasting systems and equipment as part of the station’s 49th birthday celebrations, held at the SABC buildings in Thohoy-andou, on Saturday.

“Turning 49 may mean different things to different people,” said the station’s manager, Mr Freddy Sadiki. “However, maturity has to be one of the celebrated ingredients.”

He said that Phalaphala FM had shown that being one year short of half a century would mean that one recognised the long journey taken. “This was demonstrated by the birthday month celebration where the station also invited its listeners to come and display old radio equipment and gadgets as symbols of the long journey taken,” Sadiki said.

Listeners brought old equipment that is no longer in use in modern day radio,

such as gramophones, amplifiers, hi-fi sets with turntables, old long-playing albums, 45 RPM records, old telephones and re-cording machines.

About 2 000 people, including retired radio personalities, attended the event. “Veterans like “Otto” Neluheni, Eric Ligudu, Jonas Machaba, Phuravhathu Mueda and Phillip Ramawa reminded peo-ple of the ‘old’ radio days,” Sadiki said.

Tokens of appreciation were awarded to

Ridgeway College in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has become the victim of a tree vandal for the third time. A fortnight ago, the teachers and students of the school were greeted by this appalling sight. Clear 4x4 vehicle tracks were the only clue as to how the vandal managed to uproot all five of the school’s indigenous trees that they had specially secured with poles on the front sidewalk of the school. This has happened once every month since the school planted the trees in December. The poles were planted after the second time. Anybody with information that will help the school catch the culprit can contact Ridgeway at Tel 015 516 3908.

exhibitors who brought their equipment along. The top three were Mr Josias Ndambale who exhibited a space gram, Mr Tshililo Mukwev-ho with a hi-fi and Mr Ndanganeni Lihalima, who displayed a gram-ophone.

“Without blowing our own horn, this initia-tive is so different and unique that it demon-strates who we are,” Sadiki said. “If you think you have seen innovation now when we turned 49, wait until we turn 50 next year!” boasted Phalaphala FM programme manager Sharon Ravele.

Ravele added that the station would conclude its month-long celebra-tion parties at Mveledza Ndivho School in Chi-awelo, Gauteng, on 1 March. Musicians and singers will entertain the guests.

Listeners attended the exhibition and celebration on Saturday.

Award-winning reggae musician Burning Doctor was among the artists who entertained the guests.

16-Year-old girl raped at Magau village

Album to inspire the troubled youth

New house to assist victim of attack

A 16-year-old pupil is still traumatised after her uncle had allegedly raped her at her home at Magau in the Sinthumule area last Sunday night.

It is alleged that the uncle and his friend visited the vic-tim’s home under the pretence of watching his movies on the family’s DVD machine. While they were busy watching movies, the victim occupied herself with reading school texts. The uncle’s friend finally went home, but the uncle remained.

According to the Tshil-wavhusiku police’s spokesper-son, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, the victim went to sleep in her mother’s bedroom shortly before midnight. “She was awakened by the presence of a human being in bed with her,” said Marindi.

The victim tried to scream for help, but the suspect placed his palm on her month. She alleged-ly realised that the suspect had already inserted his penis into her. “She struggled hard to push him away until she succeeded,”

Masindi said. A case of rape was opened,

following the incident. The director of Munna Ndi

Nnyi, Mr Baldwin Mufunwaini, condemned the act of the rape and said that parents must not trust any “fake men” near and around their children.

“Only fake men do rape,” Mufunwaini said.

“Real men know how to pro-tect children. Real men will create a safer environment for children and not harm them.”

When his parents passed away, he felt lost and did not know whom to turn to. As a young boy, his hope for life was tarnished and replaced by grief, loss and depression.

Turning to his grandfather’s church, however, changed everything.

This is the account of Lufuno Nebulu (26), who has recently released his debut gospel album. The guidance of his grandfather encouraged him to love and live life, although he was an orphan. “This is where I established my singing talent and I learnt to thank God through my singing talent,” he said.

He completed his Grade 12 in 2006 at Phadzima in Nzhelele and then moved to Protea North in Soweto. His manager, Mama Ngubane, recognised that Nebulu was born a talented artist, whose anointed voice continues to touch lives.

Nebulu said his task was to motivate young children in the whole country, specifically orphans, as a matter of highlighting his journey of growing up without parents.

He said that the album would heal and give hope to those who strived to succeed against all odds. The 11-track album, Ezulwini, is available at most music stores in the province and also in Gauteng.

“On this album, I genuinely want to tell young people that, regardless of what their background might be, they can still prosper if they have a vision,” he said.

According to Nebulu, his collaboration with an award-winning producer, Mr Philemon “Techno

A woman who was abducted, then raped, hacked with a pan-ga and left for dead in 2010, has reason to smile again. Tsakani Baloyi (40) of Njhakanjhaka village received the keys to her new six-room house from the Deputy Minister of Correction-al Services, advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi, last Friday.

While handing her the keys, Adv Ramatlhodi said giving Baloyi the house was part of the process of healing. He said the department was aware of the way she had suffered at the hands of her assailant, and this ordeal could not be reversed or forgotten. “We are giving her the house to try and help her to forget the ordeal,” said Ramatlhodi.

The giving of the house was not the final chapter in this sto-ry. Ramatlhodi said they would support more efforts to assist the woman and help her recov-er. He said churches and social workers would also be used to counsel her.

Baloyi recounted her ordeal and said she was lucky to be alive. She recalled the traumatic incident when a local man burst into her hut and threatened her with a panga. He then dragged her into the bushes between Mahatlani and Bungeni, where

he raped her. After raping her, the man hacked her with the panga and dumped her in a wa-ter-logged area.

The man, Thomas Mzamani Shirinda, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape and attempted murder in 2011. He is currently serving out this sentence at the Thohoyandou (Matatshe) prison. Shirinda has applied for parole and has asked his victim for forgiveness.

When describing the attack, Baloyi said it was a miracle that she had managed to wake up. She found herself injured but did not know where she was. She later found people who called the po-lice and an ambulance. She was taken to a hospital in Makhado and later sent to Polokwane Hospital by helicopter. She spent two months recovering from her wounds in Polokwane.

Baloyi sustained injuries to her head and cheeks and has also lost the use of her left arm. “Although he almost killed me, I am now happy that I am having a posh house, and after receiving the keys to the house today, I will sleep well,” she said.

She said she counted herself lucky because there were many poor people and people who had experienced more horrible

ordeals but who were not given a house. “I think the whole thing was predestined by God. God knew everything would happen and I would smile in the end,” she said.

The idea of building a house for Baloyi started last year when she narrated her story during an offender/victim dialogue ses-sion held in Thohoyandou. The session was also attended by advocate Ramatlhodi. “I pledged to visit her and talk to her at her home. It was then that I decided to do something that would help make her forget her ordeal,” said Ramatlhodi.

He said after realising that she was sharing a hut with her two adult children, he decided to do something to change her situation.

“We mobilised support and local businesses obliged,” said Ramatlhodi. The house was built by offenders as part of giving back to society. Materials came from local businesses. Before she was attacked by her assailant, she used to be doing a lot of things to help fend for her family. “I baked magwinya and fish and sold fruit to support my two children,” Baloyi explained. After she had returned from hospital, she could not do anything for herself.

The wonder tree that keeps people healthyGrowing the moringa tree is like having a goldmine in your backyard, and local people simply don’t recognize that lives can be saved through this amazing tree, said Mr Reekie Moyo of Musina.

According to Trees of Life International, the moringa tree has enormous benefits, which include seven times the vitamin C of an orange, four times the vitamin A of carrots, four times the calcium of milk, three times the potassium of bananas and two times the protein of natural yoghurt.

The moringa tree, which has more than 400 names in lan-guages around the world, has an impressive range of medic-inal uses, with high nutritional value. Different parts of this plant contain a profile of important minerals, and are a good source of protein, vitamins, beta-carotene and amino acids.

Moyo says there are many advantages of living in a border town like Musina. “Here we meet different kind of nationalities from different countries, especially those from the northern part of Africa.” He said he first heard about the

moringa from a Somalian, who said they used to consume the tree, because it kept them strong for days without food during the times of civil war.

“He gave me some seeds in January last year and I im-mediately decided to grow the amazing tree in my yard. Today I have more than 150 moringa trees in my yard and I also sell seeds to local community mem-bers who want to establish their own gardens. I also sell leaves to people who boil them and make juice which they drink to cure many diseases or boost their immune system.”

Moyo says the moringa pow-der is in great demand. “I dry the leaves and make a powder which many people are using. They usually mix the powder

with hot water or add them to their food, because it is rich in the essential nutrients often lacking in people’s diets. What is most interesting about this tree is that it does not have an overdose level. You can con-sume as large quantities as you want and it will always be good for your health.”

The trees grow easily from seeds or cuttings. “They grow quickly, even in poor soil, and bloom eight months after plant-ing. People have found that mo-ringa leaves are quite acceptable to taste, especially when added to common food.”

Community members who want assistance on how to grow moringa or start their vegetable gardens can call Moyo on 076 376 5699.

Smuggler finedA 36-year-old South African national was fined US$600 for attempting to smuggle 100 bricks of illegal cigarettes into the country through the Beit Bridge Border Post.

Detectives arrested Lewis Tshiwidze of Tshi-kota in Makhado after he tried to leave Zimba-bwe through an illegal crossing point near the old Limpopo Bridge while carrying the contraband. He was convicted on his own plea of guilty to smuggling by Beit Bridge magistrate Mr Inno-cent Bepura and fined US$600 or six months in jail. The cigarettes were forfeited to the state.

“Water action plans not new in VDM”Well done to the forged

partnership between the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) and Afriforum. Both parties have recently claimed that the water crisis at Makha-do Town is a soon to be history. By now, there is a water action plan for the town that has been adopted by the VDM.

However, there is a very big point that has been missed here, because the problem here is not a lack of programmes or action plans.

The implementation part is the major source of the current water crisis. This is also complemented with the insufficient relevant water resources technical and managerial skills.

Honestly, the DVM cannot entirely be separated from the mainstream of governance e.g. provincial and national govern-ment.

One understands that legisla-tively the municipality is obliged to deal with its own service de-livery affairs, and can only pass a chunk of problems that are beyond their jurisdiction to the next level of governance. The big question is whose programmes and policies are they implement-ing that led to the current crisis. The solution to our problem has been long overdue – now is the time for an intervention from the national authorities. Because pil-ing more action plans documents onto the already existing ones has been proven to be fruitless before.

The signing of action plans and other strategic partnerships related to water service delivery are not something new within the VDM administration. For example, the VDM signed an agreement with the Department

of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Tradi-tional Affairs in their attempt to fortifying their technical skills shortages in mid-August last year. As a result, more than 50 artisans were recruited into VDM’s various ranks.

Shortly after the agreement, Vhembe’s executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, said: “The provision of water to our commu-nities is not a privilege, but a right … Gone are those days where it will take many days to repair a burst pipe or leaking sewerage. Your arrival will change the situation for the better, and as water service authority and with this pilot project, we must show the rest of the country that we can do it.”

It is seven months down the line now, and we are yet to see any tangible solution to the water crisis in the district as a whole. Instead, we hear stories of one pipe bursting after the other. Forgive my bias here,

I think this is a fair example that shows that the root of the problem is not within the lack of programmes or action plans. The challenge is deeply em-bedded in the implementa-tion inefficien-cies.

Well, it is a bit prema-t u r e t o s a y that the agree-m e n t d i d n ' t bring drastic changes to the water c r i s i s in the district because it was an agreement between two

government entities. Whatever the reason is, the slow progress in curbing the recent water crisis clearly shows that there is some-thing wrong with the implemen-tation of action plans.

My humble and sincere ques-tion to VDM is, why did it take a court order for the municipality to be persuaded into solving the water crisis, I wonder?

As for Afriforum, thank you for showing us that one can advocate for good service de-livery without involving violent protests.

In fact, this should be seen as an eye opener to any civil organization out there, that you rather use the justice system than breaking the windows of your kids’ school.

I will concede that it is still early to ululate yet. Let’s wait for the implementation part of the action plan, and then we can pop our champagne bottles if a sustainable solution has been achieved. - Allen Tshautshau (Environmental Control Offi-cer and South African National Antarctic Programme’s deputy team leader at Marion Island)

Takalani Mbekwa of Stars attacks with the ball, with Dakalo Nwanamidwa behind him.

Can Rospa United avenge their previous defeats?

Hundreds of supporters of Ma-dombidzha Arsenal watched in disbelief as their team lost 1-0 to the current log lead-ers, Makhitha Oscar Stars, in their MMK Insurance Brokers League match at Makhitha on Saturday.

It was clear from the onset that the two teams are both close contenders for the league title and they both played aggressive foot-ball. The players nearly spoiled the game by demonstrating their rough skills. The referee, Mr Mendula Sadiki, refused to let the situation get out of hand and flashed three yellow cards in quick succession.

The captain of Arse-nal, Mukondi Tshivhula, was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He retaliated after Musiwalo Mahuwa of Stars tackled him from behind. Mahuwa was also booked.

The keeper of Stars, Faith Ratombo, denied Arsenal a sure goal to-

wards the end of the first half. He palmed the ball away for a corner kick after Dakalo Nwanamidwa unleashed from within the box.

Although he had been out of action for several months, Stars midfielder Baro Sebola was a marvel to watch. He was every-where, directing the ball to the points where it mattered most.

A defender of Arsenal, Londy Musiamo, handled the ball within his own danger area. The referee wasted no time and pointed at the penalty spot. An official of

Arsenal then entered the pitch and accused the referee of fa-vouritism. The match stopped for almost 10 minutes but continued after the referee and the captains had a short meeting and agreed for the match to continue. John Marindi beat the keeper with a volley to give his side the lead.

Though Arsenal had the lion's share of ball possession through-out the match, they lacked a clear-cut final pass that could have helped them gain more than just a point.

The Makhado Eltivillas grounds will be a hive of activity tomorrow afternoon as the Vhembe derby be-tween Basel FC and Rospa United will be staged there.

It will be time for Rospa United to avenge the 2-4 defeat they suffered against Blue Rocks at the Univen Stadium last Saturday. Rospa have recently signed a number of players from Mpumalanga and Gauteng to beef up their ailing squad.

Basel must win the match at all costs in order to move out of the

relegation zone. They are currently at the bottom of the log.

Joe’s Express will visit Bellevue Winners Park at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen. Bellevue are among the favourites for the league title, and losing against Joe’s Express will broaden the gap between them and the log leaders, Blue Rocks.

Dynamos will host Giyani Hotspurs at the same venue, starting at 15:00. Dynamos, or Ri khomeni ri nga peli as they are affectionately called, have finally found a winning combination

after losing their first five league matches.Mighty FC will travel to Tzaneen on Sunday

at the Nkowankowa Stadium. Lephalale Young Killers will play in front of their home crowd. They will entertain The Dolphins at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale.

Ray Pillars will host Mosesetjane All Stars at the Seshego Stadium, while Magezi FC will host Win-ners Park at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium. In the final match of the weekend, Great North FC will play against Modimolle Aces in Modimolle.

Mercy Masakona is back with a bangAfter disappearing from music circles for almost eight years, a resident of Lwamondo village, Mercy Masakona Madzivhandila, has made a comeback with her fourth album.

In an interview, the gospel singer revealed that her new release, Dzina lawe, is performing far beyond her expectations, despite the fact that it was only released last Friday.

According to Madzivhandila, it took her the whole of last year to record the album at the Maambelanduni Recording Studio. It contains eight heart-touching songs. When asked why it had taken her so long to go back to the recording studio after releasing her third album, Naho 2, back in 2006, she said that piracy had made her think twice before going back to the studio.

She revealed that her third album was seriously hit by piracy, to the extent that she decided to kiss the industry goodbye. When asked when she discovered that music was her career, Mercy was quick to say that she started singing when she was still a Sunday school girl. She further stated that she accompanied a number of local artists, including Itani Madima, Roxley Masevhe, Lufuno Dagada and Rapson Rambuwani, in recording their albums, before she went solo.

In 1998 Mercy tried her luck by recording her debut album, Yesu wa vhuthu. According to her it was songs like Zwo naka and He idani vhana which made the album an instant hit with the fans. Her

second album, Haho 1, was released in 2001. It also comprised eight songs, with Ndi do ya u vhona vhalisa and Tshifhinga as the crowd-pleasers.

Her debut album, Yesu wa vhuthu, won her an award during the Vhembe Music Awards in 2007. Madzivhandila said that she was planning to launch her new release at the Thohoyandou Arts and Culture Centre on Saturday, March 29. She stated that she would be performing live at wedding ceremonies and church conferences in the coming months in a bid to promote her new release.

Another defeat for United Brothers

Lwamondo Secondary School, one of the oldest schools in the Vhembe region, which took most schools by surprise by achieving a 100% pass in the 2013 Grade 12 examinations, has attracted a lot of attention from all over the country.

Many of the pupils attained university exemption.

Early this year, a delegation from the province, led by MEC Rudolf Phala, visited the school to congratulate them. As if that was not enough, the senior tra-

Zamenkomste United Brothers continued to give away league points when they lost 0-1 to Muraleni United in their MMK Insurance Brokers match at Muraleni on Saturday.

Brother’s killer striker, Collen Gabara, missed an easy oppor-tunity.

As part of their strategy to disorganise their opponents, Brothers displayed their drib-bling skills in the middle of the park. They missed another chance when Edwin Hlong-wane’s header missed the target by a few inches.

Things turned against Zamen-komste shortly after United in-troduced Phathutshedzo Livhal-ani for Muvhulawa Rambuda. Livhalani’s first touch on the ball ended with an attempt at goal. The Brothers keeper, Thabelo Mabudu, stretched to the limit to fist the ball away.

Rendani Mathavha scored the only goal of the match. He un-leashed a volley that left keeper Thabelo Mabudu a flabbergasted man. Brothers could have equal-ised. They received a penalty

Entries open for Kremetart Stage RaceEntries are open for the 25th Kremetart one-day, four-stage cycling race, sponsored by PPC.

The PPC Kremetart Stage Race turns 25 this year and calls on all competitive cyclists and enthusiasts to participate in the race, which takes place on 7 June.

This year marks the 10th year that PPC has been involved in its sponsorship and the third year that they are the main sponsors of the race.

The Kremetart Cycling Race attracts cyclists from all over the country and over 10 000 visitors are hosted in the region. This provides a financial injection of more than R20 million towards the Makhado (Louis Trichardt) area, in accommodation, enter-tainment and other operating expenditure.

The weekend is geared to-wards the whole family, with activities for cyclists of different ages and fitness levels. Friday (6 June) late afternoon will kick

off with a 10km mountain-bike fun ride. On Saturday, the main attraction will be the famous one-day, four-stage race, as well as a 70km road race. For the more adventurous, there is a moun-tain-bike cross-country olympic race with scenic routes through the Soutspansberg Mountain, to be held on Sunday (8 June).

PPC’s customer executive: cement sales and marketing, Richard Tomes, says that PPC is delighted to sponsor this event as it offers amateur cyclists an opportunity to ride with profes-sionals and, at the same time, experience the beautiful Sout-pansberg region.

“It is a serious race, but also a time for families to spend time together and enjoy the great outdoors,” he said.

The first Kremetart Race was held in 1990, with only 50 cy-clists. The popularity of the race has grown annually and contin-ues to do so. The organisers set a limit of 2 000 entries in order to

provide an enjoyable and quality experience.

“This is the third year that PPC and Kremetart Cycling are join-ing forces to present the biggest cycling event in the Limpopo Province. We are privileged to have PPC as our main sponsor as they are committed to promoting cycling, not only in our prov-ince, but countrywide. With the ongoing partnership with PPC, this race is known as one of the best-organised races in South Africa. As this is the 25th year of the Kremetart Cycle Race, we aim to make all participants’ and supporters’ cycling experiences something to remember,” says Renda Alexander, PPC Kreme-tart race organizer of the P&L Cycling Club of Louis Trichardt.

Kremetart is rated as the best road race and one of the top three road races amongst cyclists in the country.

Enter online at www.kreme-tartcycling.co.za. Entries close on 31 May at midnight.

ditional leader in the Lwamondo area, Tho-vhele Vho Ndaedzo Nelwamondo, with senior members of his traditional council, arrived at the school last Friday.

The principal of the school, Mr Tshiman-gadzo Tshubwana, also briefed him on the challenges they were facing at the school. “We had 128 pupils in Grade 12 last year, and out of those, 71 received university exemption. That was made possible by the men and women you see here. They are hard workers who go beyond the scope of

duty and work during weekends and holidays. With the help of our dedicated SGB, we are very positive that we will better the results this year, despite the odds,” he said. Currently, they have 1 543 pupils who are study-ing under trying conditions.

Thovhele Ndaedzo Nelwa-mondo, who is very passionate about education and has built five secondary schools in his villages, said he was attracted to the school after hearing the good the school was doing. “We

last had a 100% pass rate in this school 35 years ago and when we heard that it had happened again this year, we felt we should come and refuel the fires here,” he said.

Thovhele Nelwamondo pre-sented certificates to the teach-ers who achieved a 100% pass rate in their subjects. He also gave a certificate of recognition to one of the longest-serving teachers, Mr Justice Matambela, who has served the school since the seventies.

High achievers, educators who attained 100% pass rate in their respective subjects, show the certificates they received from Thovhele Nelwamondo. Also in the photograph are members of the royal council who accompanied Nelwamondo.

Phungo and Joe’s Express in deadlockIn their Safa second division league match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday, Phungo All Stars shared the spoils with Joe’s Express when they played to a 1-1 draw.

Express fought it without their killer strikers, Rendani Madega and Thembisani Nevhulamba. Realizing that it would be dif-fi cult for them to fi nd the net in the absence of the two, the coach of Express, Edwin “Cafu” Ram-phabana, took it upon himself and put on the team’s jersey. Ramphabana proved that expe-rience counts, when he came close to scoring in the 18th minute. He received a neat pass from Dakalo Ratshitan-ga and ran straight to the edge of the box, from where he unleashed a ground cutter. The ball missed the goal mouth by inches.

The keeper of Phungo All Stars, Gogo Lange-ni, was forced to stretch to the limit in the 24th minute. This came after Dzivhuluwani Simba put him to the test with a long-range volley. Langeni pulled off a brilliant save at a time when everyone thought that was the opening

goal for Express.Stars’ demon midfielder,

Khumbudzo Muvhango, who is known for his dribbling skills, could not live up to the fans’ expectations, as he was tightly marked. The keeper of Express, Rotshidzwa Muleka, was booked for wasting time. He held onto the ball for far too long, giving instructions to his team mates at the same time as if he were the coach.

Express introduced Ndateni Netshitadi and Mukhethwa Mun-dalamo for Hymer Munyai and

Mashudu Noko respectively in the 64th minute.

Phungo All Stars were the fi rst to fi nd the net. Their left-footed striker, Aphane Stemmer, beat the keeper with a ground cutter, following a square pass from Thamba Chuma in the 69th minute. Express retaliated six minutes later. Nndateni Netshit-adi, who came on as a substitute, scored after a scramble within the box. Boxing championship in ThohoyandouOne of the top boxers in the province, Pfari-so “Cobra” Neluvhalani, is expected to spit venom during his clash with his Gauteng counterpart, Class “Demolish” Mboyabe, in their 10-round bantamweight provincial championship fi ght in the Thohoyandou Town Hall tomorrow evening (Saturday).

The promoter, Mr Phathutshedzo “Champ” Dongola of Champ Boxing Promotions, said it would be one of the toughest fi ghts in the histo-ry of Boxing South Africa (BSA) as the title is vacant and the winner will get national exposure. “Mboyane’s followers believe that he will de-molish the Cobra in its cave, while Cobra’s fans say he will be spitting deadly venom and make Maboyane run,” he said.

In another clash, Sydney “Skeleton” Maluleke of Gauteng will get into the ring with Thizwilondi “Tiger” Nempandoni of Limpopo in their junior lightweight bout over eight rounds. In a welter-weight clash over six rounds, Norman “No risk” Tshisikhawe of Limpopo will be meet Mastad Mangalaza of Gauteng.

Khodani Tshikovhi of Limpopo and Devmore Dumasi will clash in another bantamweight fi ght over six rounds, while two Limpopo boxers, Godfrey Nemukongwe and Gregory Millo, will meet in another bantamweight fight over four rounds.

The fi rst fi ght of the evening will be a bantamweight fi ght over four rounds between Moloko “Torna-do” Pela and Twarelo Mafhoene, both from Limpopo.

The only women bout for the evening will be the featherweight fi ght between Nolisime Baza from Gauteng and Rollen Muleba who hails from Lim-popo. They will fi ght over four rounds.

According to Dongola, the tournament is

called The Limpopo Boxing Bill Tournament and will unearth talent in boxing and give it greater exposure. “Our aim is to produce at least two SA champions and one international champion before the end of the year. We need people to come in large numbers and cheer for the boxers,” he added.

He expressed thanks to the sponsors, Ma-birimisa Bus Service, First Stop Funeral Group and Rhino Tigers Security Company, for their contribution towards the event. It will start at 18:00 and several artists will entertain the fans.

The entry fee is R50 per person and a VIP ticket costs R200. For more

information, people can contact Pha-thutshedzo Dongola at 071 400 1097 or Ephraim Simba at 072 672 0315.

Leopards ready for Vasco da GamaIt is expected that football fans will be streaming to the Giyani Stadium tomorrow afternoon for the NFD match between Black Leopards and Vasco da Gama that will be staged there.

After Black Leopards’ excel-lent performance in last Sunday’s Nedbank Cup match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Leopards have

their tails up and are ready for the match. When asked about their level of readiness, Leopards’ head coach, Mr Kosta Papic, stated that his charges were razor sharp. The exception is Lebohang Mabotja, who is still nursing his injury. Mabotja was taken off on a stretcher in their game against Chiefs. Black Leopards beat the

Capetonians 4-1 in their first-round league match at the Parow Park Stadium five months ago. Tomorrow’s match is scheduled to kick off at 15:30.

Also tomorrow afternoon, FC Cape Town will host Witbank Spurs. Roses United are poised to kill African Warriors when they meet at the Kaizer Sebotlelo

Results

Controversial victory for the Blue RocksThe Safa Second Division League match between Rospa United and Blue Rocks, which was played at the University of Venda Stadium on Saturday, was surrounded by controver-sy. The final score was 4-2 for Blue Rocks.

The players and management of Rospa feel that they could have won the match convincingly and the team’s general manager, Mr

Vhutshilo Magoro, described the result as “daylight robbery”. Angry fans stated that the referee, Mr Namadzavho Mulaudzi, was “fully behind the visitors from Tzaneen from the onset.” Magoro added that “there was no way we could have won that match under such circumstances as we scored more than six goals, which the referee chose to disallow for unknown reasons,” said Mr Ma-

goro. The league coordinator, Mr Victor Matsokgo, told Limpopo Mirror that he was aware of the controversy, but was awaiting match reports from the match of-ficials and officials of both teams before they could investigate the incident. In another match, Phun-go All Stars held Joe’s Express FC to a 1-1 draw in their Vhembe derby at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

Stadium in Bethlehem. The match that is ex-

pected to draw a huge number of spectators is the Cape Town derby between Milano United and Santos at the Wyn-berg Military Stadium in Cape Town. Sivut-sa Stars will entertain Chippa United in Nel-spruit, while Cosmos will battle with Baroka FC. Both Cosmos and Baroka are in winning mode, but Cosmos will have an added advan-tage as they will be play-ing home.

Sunday will see Ma-luti FET College take on Thanda Royal Zulu at the Charles Mopedi Sta-dium in Phuthaditshaba. United FC will have a date with Blackburn Rovers at the Olympia Stadium in Rustenburg.

Black Leopards did not die a coward’s death when they lost 0-1 to Kaizer Chiefs in their Nedbank last-32 match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polok-wane on Sunday afternoon. Lidoda Duvha pushed Chiefs all the way and were unfortunate not to wrap up the match inside 90 minutes.

The Thohoyandou outfit had a great chance to take an early lead in the fifth minute. They opened up the Chiefs’ de-fence and ultimately the ball fell into the path of David Zulu, whose shot from just 10 yards went agonizingly wide of the goal. Marks Munyai, the Leopards’ right back, found himself on the wrong side of the law in the 16th minute. He obstructed George Lebese and the Port Elizabeth referee, Mr Lwan-dlile Mfiki, deemed it fit to reprimand him with a card.

Munyai’s caution did not scare his teammates. Instead, they continued to push the Chiefs’ defence backward, but unfortunately Lady Luck was not on their side. Min-utes later, the Leopards at-tacker, Leonard Ntshangase, found space inside the box and blasted his effort high from close range. This after the Chiefs keeper, Brilliant Khuzwayo, moved closer to the striker to narrow the angle on goal.

The best chance of the first half fell to Chiefs in the

38th minute. George Maluleka found an unmarked Tefu Mashamaite on the edge of the box and the defender unleashed a stinging left-footed shot which the Leop-ards’ keeper, Jacob Mokhasi, acrobati-cally palmed away for a corner kick. On the stroke of half time, Leopards missed another great scoring chance.

Chiefs’ defender, Siphiwe Mthweni, demonstrated his wisdom by avoiding a crucial touch that could have resulted in an own goal.

Karabo Tsepe brought the best out of

the Chiefs’ goalie, Brilliant Khuzwayo, after the Amakhosi defenders retreated and allowed him space just outside the box in the 85th minute. He cracked a volley which went over the bar by a few inches.

Chiefs took the lead in the 19th minute of extra time, following a careless mistake by the Leopards marksman, Dunga Mun-ganga. Although Leopards lost the match, they have something to be proud of. Their midfielder, Edgar Manaka, was nominated man of the match. He received a cheque of R5 000 and a Nedbank blazer.
