They were on their way home from Gauteng when their Polo collided head-on with another vehicle along the N1. According to emergency workers, the passengers died instantly. The national road had to be closed to traffic for several hours to allow rescue workers to remove the bodies of those who had died and those who were still trapped under the capsized cars. The spokesperson for the Limpopo police, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, confirmed that they have opened a culpable homicide docket. A family representative, Mr Kenneth Ramag- oma, said that the family had accepted the loss, although it was difficult to cope without them. “It also important to acknowledge the community support since we received the bad news,” he said. Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana expressed his shock about the incident and sent his condolences to the family, friends and com- munity. He said the horrific accident had robbed the community of energetic young people. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased during this time of grief. The whole community shares the heartache and is saddened that so many lives continue to be lost on South African roads,”he said. The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, expressed his condolences to the family and said that their loved ones would be always be remembered. “‘Understandably, it is very difficult to continue with everyday life after such a traumatic experience, and the family is in need of support,“ he said. Ms Cynthia Van Rensburg, spokesperson of the Road Accident Fund, said that they would help the family to finance the burials. Messrs Novis Mudau and Norman Ralubuvhi will be buried at Vleifontein tomorrow (Satur- day). The family of four will be buried on Sunday at Ngwenani ya Ha- Themeli. The service will start at 06:00. Five people were killed in an accident near Malamulele on Sunday afternoon. According to Malamulele police spokesperson W/O Alson Mapindani, the accident happened between Mavambe and Malamulele. He added that a Mercedes Benz travelling from Mavambe with four people inside had collided head-on with a Hyundai from Malamulele, which had two people inside. “Three people died on the scene and two others later passed on at a local hospital,” said Mapindani. At the time of going to press, details of the accident were still sketchy. The names of the deceased and injured were not yet available. The DA also sent its heartfelt condolences to the families of the people who had died in the two accidents over the weekend. According to a statement by the party, the accidents are suspect- ed to have been caused by reckless driving and overtaking at unsafe places and that is “a clear indication that our motorists are not obeying the traffic signs on the roads.” The DA urged the MEC to identify accident hot spots across the province’s roads and to deploy sufficient traffic officials to these roads “to prevent avoidable loss of lives”. The principal of Muhaweni Primary, Mr William Ramathavhani, thanked the TOLS Company from America that had donated almost 500 pairs of school shoes to the school. He said what was done by the donor proved that most people were dedicated to community development and ensuring that children were receiving education without worrying about uniforms or shoes. “Children will now enjoy the school lessons without worrying about shoes or uniform,” he said. The chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Daniel Masindi, said the parents of the children were urged to make sure that children were not misusing the donated shoes but only for school purposes. “We thank the donors for their initiative,” he said.

The Thohoyandou police would like to question this woman in connection with fraud cases allegedly committed in Thohoyandou and Polokwane. According to the police, she allegedly used stolen identity documents to access her victims' accounts to purchase goods at different shops. While trying to purchase goods at one of the shops in Thohoyandou, a staff members noticed something unusual and that was when the suspect ran away, leaving an identity document behind. Those who know her can contact the investigating officer, Sgt Livhuwani Dzhaudzhau, at 079 313 5626 or 015 960 1014.

Community members oppose bail for three suspectsAngry people, mostly women, who marched to the Tshitale Magis-trate's Court last Friday went back home happy. The marchers from Sereni were demanding that the three men arrested for the murder and rape of a local gogo be refused bail.

Happy Mohale (24), Stanley Zwidofhela Mugwena (31) and Thomas Serepa (29) stand accused of murdering and raping Mojaji Sebyene (83) last month at Sereni. All three, residents of the area, are facing charges of murder, rape, arson and robbery.

The demonstrators at the court de-manded that the suspects be removed from their community. They also demanded that the courts be harsh on the suspects and not grant them bail as they were regarded as a danger to the community.

Represent ing the community, Mr Lesley Rikhotso said the com-munity was tired of end-less and senseless mur-ders. “We have buried many women over the years in this village, and many died under myste-rious circumstances. We are here to say 'enough is enough'. So much innocent blood has been shed, and we want this to end immediately,” he said.

Rikhotso said their village had become like a slaughterhouse, where many had already lost

their lives. What worried them most, he added, was that most of the cases where people had been killed re-mained unresolved. “We do not want more people to die under mysterious circumstances. If these people are granted bail, they might continue with their murderous spree. Let them be locked up forever,” he said.

He said the community did not want to see the suspects again in the village as the community felt that they might continue with their cruel deeds. “We need the justice system to make sure that this man does not get bail,” an unhappy Rikhotso said.

The case was postponed to 3 September for a bail application, but at the time of going to press, the outcome of the hearing was not yet available. The three remain in custody.

“No place for ritual murderers in our area” - Gole MphaphuliBarely a week after the police post-ed a R100 000 reward for informa-tion on the alleged ritual murder of Nyelisani Mphaphuli (60), the saga took yet another turn.

Angry residents went on the ram-page on Sunday, barricading roads with big boulders, torching a house belonging to a person they believe is one of the suspects and damaging two other houses in the village.

This was after a meeting called to give feedback about the demands made by the community three weeks ago. The meeting was supposed to have been held at the local tribal offic-es but could not go ahead as residents feared there was muti at the venue. It was later held at the local sports field.

The feedback was not well received by the residents, who then demanded that the suspects be questioned.

A sister of the deceased, who was at Tshakhuma, had to be fetched there to come and answer questions. She allegedly mentioned the names of people who had been involved in the killing. Out of fear for their safety, the leadership decided to take her and another of the suspects to the police station at Sibasa.

That same night, angry commu-nity members went on the rampage, burning a house and damaging three others and a car.

Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli reacted angrily to the latest development. "Ritual murders are a great concern here in our area, and I had made it clear to my subjects that whoever was found to be involved would be summarily expelled from the village. If it turns out that they are positively linked, prosecuted and convicted, they must just know that they are not coming back here. I do not have a place for ritual murderers here. I want my people to live in peace and not in fear of being killed in the most barbaric manner," he said.

He further commended residents for having taken a bold stand to fight the scourge of ritual murders in the village. "Now that there is evidence, the ball is in the police's court and we just hope that they will work hard to bring this matter, which has become a source of discontent in the village, to a speedy conclusion," he said.

Community leader Thikhathali Nndangane-ni said the community was angry. "We had to take some of the identified people to the police for

their safety. On Tuesday, we had a meeting with the police and the tra-ditional leadership from the villages. We just hope this will normalise the situation and that we will have prog-ress in the cases," he said.

Meanwhile, the police have come out strongly against residents' tak-ing the law into their own hands. Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said there had been massive destruction and burning of property belonging to suspects in the case. "We are very worried that people are now getting out of hand. What worries us most is that, instead of working with us, community mem-bers are now taking the law into their own hands and damaging property, based on speculation and gossip. We are not just going to stand by when there is lawlessness in the communi-ty, but we will make sure that those involved in these acts of thuggery be brought to book," he said.

He added that three houses be-longing to suspected killers had been damaged and one had been burnt to ashes. He said they were now hous-ing eight people at the police station for their safety. "We believe there is someone somewhere who knows about this murder.

We are making an appeal for infor-mation as we would like to conclude this case as a matter of urgency," he added.

He said charges of public violence and arson had been opened in con-nection with the weekend's incident.

Ritual murders are becoming a menace in the Vhembe region, with two other cases being heard in the Malamulele and Thohoyandou area. Nyelisani Mphaphuli (60) was found killed on 3 May 2014. She was killed in a very cruel way, with her eyes gouged out, her tongue cut off and skin removed from her face.

It is alleged that the police arrived at the scene and some members of the community had given them the names of the suspects, but the suspects were not arrested.

Mirror’s Given receives red-carpet treatment in China

Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho, an author and journalist, attended the Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF) in China last week.

He was an invited guest with other South African writers, among them Sihle Khumalo, Prof Andries Oliphant, Primrose Mrwebi and Bathandwa Mcuba.

The authors were invited by the China Writers Association (CWA) as a reciprocal programme after South Africa had successfully hosted a dele-gation of the CWA last year. The writers departed for China last Monday (August 25) and arrived back in the country this Monday.

“The CWA welcomed us heartily and we spent all those days experiencing the history and cultural heritage of the country,” Mukwevho said. “We got to Beijing in the evening and the following morning we visited the magnifi cent Forbidden City.”

The great achievements in literature from an-cient times to the present were also brought to the writers’ attention. A visit to the National Museum

of Modern Chinese Literature and the former residence of the late highly regarded Chinese playwright, Mr Cao Yu, revealed the beauty of Chinese literary history.

“I noticed that the people of China, or those in power, work hand in glove with artists to see that the needs of the artists are met, and that all prac-tising artists’ works are documented in museums,” he said.

The highlights were the round-table conver-sations with writers in Beijing and Tianjin on recent development in South African and Chinese literature. “It dawned on me, during these discus-sions, that writers in China and SA have a lot in common – we share a love of reading and a passion for writing,” Mukwevho explained.

Prof Oliphant added that they also visited the Great Wall, constructed from 600 BC onwards. “A visit to the Museum of Modern Chinese Literature emphasised [the need for] a national museum of

literature in South Africa, inclusive of all languag-es,” he said.

The visit to the BIBF event provided the wri-ters an opportunity to interact with publishers and writers from all over the world and consolidated relations between South African and Chinese wri-ters. “It paved the way for collaborations in the translation of literary works from both countries and on-going exchanges,” Oliphant said.

As tokens of appreciation to the Chinese hosts, Mukwevho handed copies of his books, A traumatic revenge (short stories) and The violent gestures of life (novel) to the CWA’s vice-president, Mr Liao Ben.

“It was my fi rst overseas fl ight and trip and I will cherish the experience,” Mukwevho marvelled. “I walked on a red carpet for the fi rst time in my life - in Tianjin! I am happy that my gift as writer is bringing me before the kings and queens of this world.”

The drilling of three boreholes near Mowkop to augment the water supply to this main reservoir of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) should have start-ed in 4 October last year and should have been completed by 30 April this year. It has not started yet.

The acting municipal manager of the Vhembe District Mu-nicipality (VDM), Mr Ratidzai Madimutsa, said that the delay was due to “various” obstacles. At first he referred to obstacles in general for the whole of the water supply action plan.

“We had the rainy season in January and February this year, we had vandalism”. When asked about the three Mowkop boreholes in particular, he said

that it took time to engage with the private landowner where the boreholes were to be drilled, an environmental impact assess-ment (EIA) had to be completed and the various requirements of the landowner had to be met. “We have overcome these obstacles and the contractor is standing ready to start drilling once the go-ahead has been given,” Mad-imutsa said.

The water supply action plan was drawn up in conjunction with civil rights organization AfriForum, who obtained a court order against VDM to enforce the water supply to Makhado (Louis Trichardt). “The only real obsta-cle is incompetence,” AfriForum Louis Trichardt chairperson Mr Wally Schultz said in ex-

asperation on Tuesday. “I am just beyond un-derstanding the endless ‘serial incompetence’ that I uncov-er every sin-gle day in my dealings with Vhembe and their overpaid consul tan ts . We stumbled across yet an-other blunder today, due to incompetence, that sets our r e a s o n a b l e g o a l s b a c k and prevents closure of our water supply action plan,” Schultz said.

He added that he was on the phone every day for hours and at the respective sites as many times as possible.

“I am doing their job for them,” Schultz said, referring to highly paid municipal officials and consultants. Schultz was the one to engage with the landowner where the three boreholes are to be drilled.

“It was confirmed that all the documents requested by Ko-matiland [landowner] had been submitted. We are only waiting for them to give an approval to drill, which must be received before the end of July 2014,” read the minutes of a steering committee meeting of 8 July this year. It came to light on 2 September that there were still outstanding documents that the consultant had not provided. “Yet another example of incompe-tence holding up our action plan further. This is a point that will escape the man on the street who just wants water in his tap. This kind of ‘petty incompetence’ is not an isolated incident ... it is the rule and not the exception,” Schultz said and added that he still firmly believed in ‘construc-tive engagement’. “Constructive engagement, however, does not prohibit strong criticism where and when it is due and merited,” Schultz said.

Madimutsa said that he was not prepared to say that Vhembe and their consultants were taking too long to finalise the drilling of the last three boreholes. Concerning the 11 months since the project should have started, Madimutsa said, “It is not like nothing has been happening.”

“The real obstacle is incompetence”

Gospel artist Mercy Masakona Madzivhandila hands over the trampoline to Rev Avhashoni Matamela of the Mugomeli Lutheran Church.

Famous gospel diva Mercy Masakona Madzivhandila of Lwamondo opened her heart and donated a trampoline to the children attending Sunday school at the Mugomeli Lu-theran Church.

Madzivhandila handed over the trampoline last Saturday. She said such a feature on the church premises would attract and more children. “God says: 'Let the children come to My kingdom' and if children are going to the house of God, we should support them by giving them educational toys and something for recreation. If children can get a safe place to play, it will save them from falling into the hands of criminals," she said.

The number of Sunday school children has already increased from 25 to 47. "Apart from do-nating a trampoline, I help teach local musicians the basics of piano and I conduct a workshop for the gospel group to help craft their music," she said.

Madzivhandila has an honours degree in music that she obtained from the University of Venda. She is busy completing her master's degree in music at the same institution. "I released my album titled Dzina Lawe, meaning His Name, in March this year," she said.

Rev Avhashoni Matamela of the Mugomeli Lutheran Church said the entire congregation was happy to receive such a donation from the gospel artist and they hoped that the number of children attending church would increase.

Residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) seem to concur on one important matter - munic-ipal accounts are in shambles.

The mayor of the Makha-do Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said that the municipal billing system is a national problem. The municipal manager, Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali, admitted that municipal accounts are in shambles. The ratepayers put that very fact on the table, time and again.

“We as ratepayers always have to run to the municipality to have accounts corrected. We recently had an account of R240 000 for one of our members. We managed to get it down to R20 000. I still doubt the correctness of even that reduced amount. Nobody could explain to us why the additional amounts were there and who had put them there. We really find you need a blood pressure pill when you open your municipal account,” said Ms Inga Gilfillan, chairperson of the Sout-pansberg Ratepayers Association (SRPA), at their annual general meeting on 22 August.

Last week, the SRPA was shown an account where the member was charged property rates on a garage “valued “ at R100 000, in addition to the

property rates on the flat where the member resides.

The municipal manager said that he had been dealing with the hard issues and has not yet gone "deep into the soft issues, which are in shambles", of which the municipal accounts are one.

Tariffs that are “too high” are another one. Mr Anton Pretori-us said that he only received a municipal account every three months or so and that he was consequently charged for most of the usage on the highest scale of the inclining block electricity tariff. Gilfillan said the inclining block tariff was not according to the municipal policy.

Muthsinyali responded that if the inclining block tariff was not supported by the policy, then either the policy would have to be amended or the way the mu-nicipality charged would have to be changed. “The ratepayers say that the tariffs are too high and my electrical department says they are too low,” Muthsinyali said and added that he would have to ask for a report on the different issues.

Ms Lani Senekal, SRPA man-ager, said that some ratepayers who had a credit on their account did not receive their statements. “The municipality told me that

they did not have paper to send an account to someone who was in credit.

The ratepayers still want their statements, even if they are in credit,” Senekal said. “It is unac-ceptable,” the municipal manager said at the meeting. “To sort out accounts often presents us with a crisis. In the same breath, I want to appeal to our ratepayers to pay timeously before the 6th of the month,” said Senekal. This week, SRPA secretary Ms Loureth Otto reported that residents had not yet received their mailed accounts this month.

The mayor said the municipal-ity was working on account prob-lems. “It is now only individual cases. It is no longer a crisis,” Mutavhatsindi said.

The municipality’s commu-nications department regularly refrains from answering any media questions pertaining to individual accounts. It seems as though officials do not always communicate reverses or pay-ments to other relevant officials and settled debts reappear again and again, resulting in power cuts or threats thereof. Questions on these issues were first asked on 31 March this year and, despite many follow-ups, have not yet been answered.

MM admits to problems with accountsThe newly appointed pres-ident of the convocation of Univen, Mr Levy Ndou, says he is aiming to “raise Univen’s flag higher and higher.”

Ndou, (46) a well-known political analyst and a lecturer at the Tswane University of Technology (TUT), was elected president of the Univen convo-cation during the annual general meeting of the convocation at the senate chambers.

He succeeds Mr Shumani Ravhuanzwo, who was elected his deputy.

Ndou was born and bred at Lwamondo and matriculated at Shondoni Second-ary. He received an honours degree in po-litical science from Univen.

“The Univen con-vocation has to under-stand the university strategic plan and fit her plans into that plan. The convocation has to ensure that all the members are al-ways informed about the developments at the university,” says Ndou.

He says all alumni must be involved in the activities of the convocation. "There are chapters in Polok-wane, Gauteng and

Mpumalanga. These chapters need to be revived and new chapters need to be launched.

We also have to expand and have chapters in other prov-inces. Univen has observed a number of students from neigh-bouring countries. We have to expand and have chapters in Zimbabwe and Swaziland," he adds.

Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela of the Northern Gauteng High Court addressed the event and expressed the hope that the new-ly elected members will serve and contribute to make Univen realize its dream, mission and

vision. “I challenge all of us to be

always on our best of behaviour wherever we act or speak on behalf of the University of Venda. We should be able to sign the pledge to help this in-stitution to sustain its dreams,” Maumela said.

The newly elected members of the Univen Convocation are Mr Levy Ndou (president), Mr Shumani Ravhuanzwo, (deputy president) and the addition-al members are Mr Khathu Razwiedani, Thovhele Nthu-meni Masia and Ms Salome Magokga.

Spirit of giving reigns supreme at JPS

Municipal imbizo at Musina tomorrow

Dzwerani resident (40) commits suicide

Bishop Pesulo and the staff and children at the Musina Children Resource Centre during the visit.

Bishop Pesula of JPS Interna-tional Ministries (Jesus for the Poor in Spirit) and his Mega Care team visited three cen-tres that take care of orphans and vulnerable children in Musina last Thursday.

The centres are Musina Chil-dren Resources Centre, Roman Catholic Woman Resource Centre and URC SA’s Mighty Hand Boys Shelter.

Musina Children Resource Centre assists orphan and vul-nerable children in and around Musina. They provide meals for the children and also help the children with their school work. The Roman Catholic Women Resource deals with foreign women and young girls who come into the country from various African states. They as-

sist them with counselling, food, clothing and accommodation, among other things.

The Mighty Hand Boys Shel-ter mainly deals with unaccom-panied boys, also from various African states. They are housed and fed there, while some are even placed in local schools in the area.

Bishop Pesulo indicated that MegaCare was born out of the desire to assist people who are less fortunate and might be destitute.

He said the church aimed to bring changes for the poor and to touch the lives of people in dire need. “Through MegaCare, we are taking care of five poor families in our church by giving them food every month. Today we felt that we must extend our

helping hand to these shelters that, like us, are doing a good job of taking the care of the children of God, with very few resourc-es,” said Pesulo during the visit.

During the visit, bags of cloth-ing and food were presented to several of the destitute people.

Pesulo added that the goods distributed were donations from generous individuals from JPS and from some businesspeople in town who wanted to contrib-ute to the wellbeing of others. He called on everybody to assist in their small way to the betterment of other people in society and for businesses to plough back into their communities by giving to the people, because “when we give to the poor, the Lord blesses us doublefold,” he concluded.

Cllr Mihloti Ramo yada.

The people of Musina will have the opportunity to interact with the political and administrative leadership of their municipality during the mayoral imbizo that takes place tomorrow (Saturday, 6 September).

The event will also serve as an opportunity for the new mayor, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, to give a report on the state of service delivery in the municipality.

Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu says government services will be offered during the event. “The proceedings will include mobile services, presentations, exhibitions and an op-portunity for communities to ask questions and give comment on government programmes being run in Musina. The imbizo will be presented by the municipality in conjunction with provincial and national departments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). To add a taste to heritage month, there will also be entertainment from local groups, displaying the talent from Musina.” He said that, through the event, the municipality aimed to encourage the residents to participate in policy- and decision-making processes of their democratic gov-ernment. “We always strive to encourage our com-

munity members to have their say in the running of the munici-pality. Inclusive g o v e r n m e n t means that all stakeholders are taking part in the affairs of the government.

Our bench-mark is to ren-der an account-able, transpar-ent, and devel-opment-oriented public adminis-tration.”

Thabelo Thavhanyaedza (25), first winner of the Rofhiwa Gospel Talent Search, recently received a diploma in financial management from the Vhembe FET. Her debut album, Kharendwe Yesu, became an instant hit and earned her a nomination as best female artist at the Tshivenda Music Awards. She said she valued education and would continue studying until her hair turned grey. “Education gives one a better direction. I have a lot of young people looking up to me, and I want to inspire them and they must learn from me that, whatever talent one might have, education must come first,” she said.

A dark cloud of shock is hang-ing over the community of Mvelaphanda at Dzwerani in the Vuwani area after a resi-dent, Ndifelani Mulaudzi (40), committed suicide by gassing himself in a bakkie.

The incident, which left the family and the closely knit com-munity in a state of shock and overwhelmed with grief, took place last Tuesday morning.

It is alleged that Mulaudzi, a security guard in Thohoyandou, had arrived that morning from a night shift.

Eyewitnesses say they saw him holding a black hosepipe but did not suspect anything until a neighbour noticed that he had

died in a bakkie. The bakkie belonged to a

neighbour, who had given it to him so that he could take his child to school and also do his own chores.

The grief-stricken father of the deceased, Mr Elvis Mulaudzi, who did not want to speak at first, poured his heart out.

He said he was in Vuwani drawing water when he received a call telling him of his son’s death. “I rushed back to the place. What I found there nearly tore my heart out - my son’s body slumped there with no sign of life in him. It was a painful experience,” he said.

“I have lost two of my children

already. Only a few years ago I had to bury his brother, who worked at BMW in Pretoria and had died in a car accident.”

The chairperson of Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, visited the grieving family and came out strongly against the loss of life by men who cannot come to terms with reality.

“Men are not speaking out and keep their problems to them-selves, which end up being too heavy for them to carry,” he added.

Vuwani police spokesperson W/O Elijar Malatjie confirmed the suicide, saying they had opened an inquest docket.

An environmental project to the value of R18 million was recently launched at the Joe Matsila Lodge. The project will focus on the cleaning of rivers of unnecessary shrubs, grass and trees and will provide jobs for residents of Matsila, Majosi, Nkuzana and Mashau. During the event, Chief Livhuwani Matsila said that the projects would help address unemployment, inequality and poverty and accelerate economic growth. He urged community members to refrain from sitting at home, drinking traditional beer the whole day, and to take part in the development that was happening in the area. Women in Limpopo were told to care more about their health, rather than dedicating all their time to their businesses and other people. This was during the South African Women Entrepreneurs Network Limpopo Wellness Day held at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre last Friday. During the event, hundreds of women from all over the province took part in a 7km fun walk and also engaged in rigorous exercises sponsored by Gym4You in Thohoyandou. Leading by example, Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi (second from right) and deputy minister Elizabeth Thabethe (third from right) lead a group of women in the fun walk.

Replay Dance Crew new and exciting

Innocent Maphangwa is guilty of hip hop talent

An entertainment group, The Replay Dance Crew from Shayandima, is pro-viding a unique dance performance at various entertainment events in the Venda region.

This group mostly leaves the audiences wondering who they are as their dance performances are combinations of break-dance, local dance, Sipantsula, crump, reggae chant and popular American dance moves. Their recent performances during a

Can-Do concert at the University of Venda attracted the prominent musician, Arthur Mafokate, from 999 Music.

Replay Dance Crew was founded by three young men who were endeav-ouring to refrain from living the street life. Tshimanagadzo Ratshilumela (21) composes the music which the group uses to perform. The other members are the leader, Emmanuel Ratshilumela (18), often known by his stage name, Mini Tash, and Lutendo Mamatho (20), prominently known as Sobo.

The group’s manager, Ms Rita Denga Nephawe from Rita Dee Entertainment, said these young men’s combination was providing a unique performance in the region. “The combination of these three young boys always brings every crowd to its feet after every performance,” she said. So far, this group has already won nine competitions in the region and Thulamela Municipality awarded them certifi cates and trophies during heritage celebrations last year. “They

A young hip hop artist, Innocent Maphangwa, found his voice in the music fraternity after the release of his single selection early this year.

He has just released his single compilation and the four songs are already endearing him to thousands of fans through the national radio stations and commu-nity radio stations who give him airplay.

“I started recording with my two cousins from our bedroom at home at the age of 17,” he shares his start. Innocent was deeply into music through-out his high school career.

He would stand on the classrooms’ verandahs and belt out rhymes with the virtuosity of one who had a dream and vision to take his talent to greater heights. “I moved to Jozi (Johannesburg) in 2012 and I managed to fi nd a studio where I recorded my fi rst professional sounds and voice,” he says. “The result of that project was an educating,

motivational and an overall entertaining album around August of the same year. The title of his single is It’s About Time. He

is currently enjoying massive airplay with songs such as This Life, My Love, and U Wane Tshinwe, on national radio

stations. “There’s a track called U Wane Tshinwe on this single selection,” he says. “It’s a motivational track

about being proud of who you are but also for those who are ambitious enough to aspire to reach the top.”

Innocent also worked with youthful but highly talented producers and en-gineers such as Bheki and DJ Rabza. “But I fi nally found myself in the good hands of Mpho Miriri, who has a good knowledge of promoting

Limpopo talent,” he says.He resides at Manamani village,

and is sometimes based in Johannesburg where he is continuing to establish himself as a brand name in the music fraternity.

heritage celebrations last year. “They heritage celebrations last year. “They did the opening theme for Tshima 2013. They have entertained during Makhado Annual show since 2012 and we will always remember their awesome coffi n routine in 2013,” said Nephawe. The group’s performance music is always a collaboration of international and local numbers. Although they are strug-gling to acquire sponsorship, Gym for You, a local gym, has sponsored them with a place to rehearse and gym. Since the crew members are busy with their education, they have been ambassadors of the Education is the Key Campaign, which helps them inspire many more young children to refrain from alcohol and drug abuse.

Replay Dance Crew will release their debut DVD this coming December. It will feature multiple perfor-mances and eight different customs.

Crime scene experts look for clues and evidence at the scene of the robbery.

Hordes of morning shoppers and clients at the only FNB ATM at the Freddy's Complex in Shayandima stood watching in disbelief and dis-appointment on Tuesday when they found the ATM severely damaged.

This was as a result of a robbery at the ATM when robbers used a Trac-tor-Loader Backhoe (TLB) to remove the money from the machine. It is be-lieved the robbers first stole the TLB at one of the garages in Thohoyandou, where it was parked after work. It belongs to a well-known Shayandi-ma businessman. The robbers then proceeded to Shayandima some five kilometres away, where they broke the money machine. The TLB was later found abandoned in bushes not far from the scene of the robbery.

The incident, which left many stranded, is believed to have hap-pened at around 23:30 on Monday.

The driver of the TLB, who arrived at the scene in the morning, said he had parked his machine after work on Monday and left with the keys. "I was

just surprised to find that the machine was not there when I reported for work in the morning as I had the keys with me," he said.

Some clients who had come to withdraw money were visibly dis-appointed. "This is my bank and is very convenient for me, because I can come at any given time and withdraw cash. If they decide to remove it for good, we will be very disadvantaged as we would have to go to Thohoyan-dou for money," said a disappointed Mashudu Mudau.

Thohoyandou police spokesper-son Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe said they had opened a case of malicious damage to property. "As of now, we cannot confirm whether any money was stolen, but that willbe revealed during our investigations. No one has been arrested so far and investigations continue. We urge people who might have witnessed the incident to please furnish us with information that could lead us to breaking the case," she said.

Mulweli development agency to empower the youthYoung people in rural communities are often left without opportunities because of limited information.

This has become a myth to the

young people of Ha-Mavhunga in Nzhelele, however, since the incep-tion of Mulweli Youth Development Agency.

This non-profit organization is committed to empowering and informing young people from various disadvantaged rural areas. They regularly invite agencies to disseminate useful information and encourage and host various business work-shops. The co-founder, Mr Nicolas Madzhie, said the organization aimed to help young people connect with the genuine challenges of society.

Since it was established in 2010, the organiza-tion had already helped young people connect to the world of jobs. Despite assisting young people in looking for jobs, the organization also holds motivational seminars about entrepreneurship, education and musical talents.

During these seminars, government departments and various stakeholders, including the national youth development agency (NYDA) and LIBSA, are invited to motivate young people about busi-ness opportunities.

Co-founder and the organization’s spokesperson Mr Nale Muleya said although they were struggling with funds, they strived to maintain a professional standard and rescue young people from sinking into poverty because of a lack of information.

“Last month alone we have hosted various seminars for young women and entrepreneurs to help them see the light about the future,” he added. Anyone who is willing to sponsor this non-profit organization can contact Muleya at 076 625 1054.

Mr Malema wants his RDP house back.

Mr Mulatedzi David Malema (63) wants his RDP house back.

It has been more than nine years since he was evicted from his RDP house in Tshikota Town-ship, but Malema now wants to intensify efforts to reclaim his RDP house. Last month, he broke his silence and told Limpopo Mirror how the eviction had torn his family apart.

This father of five was sepa-rated from his wife shortly after he was evicted from the house. As an unemployed father, he did not have anywhere to go and did not have money to rent a place to stay. He moved from one place

to another until he secured cheap accommodation at Rietvlei farm.

According to Malema, he was evicted from his house in 2005 after failing to settle a R1 000 municipal bill. In a letter to the Makhado municipality dated December 2005, Malema accus-es the municipality of allegedly forcing him to vacate his house. “I was told that my failure to pay meant the house and stand would be sold to someone else," he said. According to him, his explana-tions as to why he couldn't settle the bill were not considered.

In an effort to try and solve the problem, Malema approached

the Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Af-fairs (Coghsta). Coghsta referred the case to one of the officials at the Makhado municipality, who was supposed to help him evict the occupants at the time. “The municipal official kept delaying until he fell very ill and passed away,” he said. That meant all the efforts he put when battling to get his house back had gone to waste.

Malema again tried to get his house back and he approached the Office of the Premier in May this year.

The matter was then referred to the MEC of Coghsta and Mr Malema was advised to consult with the local municipality. Malema said he then followed all the procedures and approached the local municipality yet again.

The director of development and planning, Ms M D Sinthu-mule, responded to Mr Malema’s predicament and stated that the investigation had revealed that his RDP house had been sold at public auction to someone else, due to the fact that he had failed to settle his debts. It fur-ther revealed that a person could only benefit once from an RDP house. Malema was advised to ask his next of kin to apply for an RDP house since he had already benefited. Mr Malema was also advised to approach the finance department and inform them to direct their statements to the new occupant.

The municipal spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, said Coghsta had investigated Mr Malema’s plight and the municipality was trying to provide alternative ac-commodation for him.

Thovhele Nthumeni Masia shakes hands with Ms Shirley Mabusela during her tour to the Masia Resource Centre, while other delegates look on.

Univen centre to assist in developmentThe communities in Ha-Masia and surrounding villages were urged to continue working with the University of Venda (Univ-en) because the university’s re-search programme can provide them with information on rural development and agricultural projects.

The call was made by the chairperson of the Univen coun-cil, Ms Shirley Mabusela, during a visit to the rural development projects in Ha-Masia and Matsila during the past week.

Univen has signed a memoran-dum of understanding with the Masia Development Trust and as-sists in community development. The construction of the Masia Resource Centre forms part of the development of the area.

A senior traditional leader, Thovhele Nthumeni Masia, who was excited about the visit by Mabusela, said part of the devel-opmental projects in his villages was the desire and determination to prosper as people. He urged his communities make full use of the Masia Resource Centre as soon as it started to operate.

The multi-million rand centre is set to offer a user-friendly com-munity library, assist in business development training and will also house a computer centre.

The Masia Development Trust’s community liaison of-ficer, Ms Mpfariseni Ligege, said the construction phase of the centre had created jobs for previously unemployed commu-nity members. “More than 150

previously unemployed people in our communities are able to put food on the table. We used to beg for food because we were unemployed, but now life has changed for the better for us,” said Ligege.

Meanwhile, Chief Livhuwani Matsila, who toured with Mabu-sela’s delegation to the various projects, said it was encouraging to be visited by academic institu-tion such as Univen. “We want to develop the partnership with Univen, so that their agricultural learners can come and learn practical farming. We hope that we will also benefit from the rela-tionship with Univen because of their research in agriculture and rural development,” said Chief Matsila.

The quest for morality

PlainTruth

Challenges facing marriages and families in such a time as this cannot be overemphasised. They range from lying to one another and cheating (infidelity) to worse cases of abuse and violence.

Our campaign to save our mar-riages is grounded on the premise that requires a head-on approach in terms of addressing these issues. Tapping into the biblical wisdom of Psalm 128:1-6, I would like to pay attention to the issue of “being a blessing to your own marriage and family”.

I am making this call because some of us have become a curse in-stead of a blessing to our marriages. Influenced by various factors, which include, among others, sin in our lives and influence from our friends and or peers. I know of cases where married couples are influenced to divorce by friends and families. Why listen to the advice of people who want to destroy your marriage and ultimately destroy you?

Even in the worst-case scenario, where you have found that your wife or husband has cheated on you, you have to try your best in terms of seeking to reconcile and mend things. I always advise my clients to fight for their marriages, even when the challenges that they are facing seem to be insurmountable.

A blessed person is one who always seek the well-being of his or her family and not the one who serves as an agent to destroy a mar-riage and family. A blessed person is

one who cherishes his or her marital relationship; one who treats his or her spouse with love and respect.

A blessed person is one who is always seeking the wellbeing of one’s children and ensures their success in life by providing proper guidance. It is one who also works very hard to provide a better life for his or her spouse and children, including excellent training in the area of education.

A blessed person in the family context is one who always wants to ground his or her marriage in God. Fear of the Lord should always serve as the basis upon which marriage should be founded and built. Having and developing a common philos-ophy in marriage is important, but respecting and living according to one’s marriage vows and commit-ments are equally important.

It is therefore important that we do not just emphasise that God is the founder of our marriages, but we should also make efforts to ensure that we live according to God’s laws and dictates regarding this institution. Walking in the ways of God is what is needed to save our marriages. It requires a wise man and a woman who is beautiful on the inside to win this battle.

My next articles will focus on developing a woman of noble character, who is also beautiful on the inside as a blessing to one’s marriage and family.

The manager of the Soutpansberg East circuit of education, Mr Falaza Baloyi, recently addressed Grade 12 pupils on the importance of education during a motivational session at the Soutpansberg East circuit, held at the Madombidzha Faith Mission Christian Church. Regional conventionThe regional convention of Jehovah’s Wit-nesses for Limpopo in English and Afrikaans will be held from Friday to Sunday, 12 to 14 September, in the Nirvana Hall in Polokwane.

The theme is “Keep Seeking First God’s King-dom!” and is based on Jesus’s words in Matthew 6:33.

The comforting Bi-ble discourse entitled “Earth’s New Ruler - Who Really Qualifies?” will be presented on Sunday morning. Two theatrical productions will bring a Bible story and a modern-day dra-ma to life.

Everyone may attend. No admission will be charged and no collec-tions will be taken.

The programme starts shortly after 09:00 every day.

Preaching the gospel of Jesus is no child's play. Rev (Dr) Ntavhanyeni Phaswana, circuit manager for Soutpansberg North of the Department of Education, was ordained on 28 August 2011, and recently celebrated his anniversary by reflecting on his life since he was ordained as a minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa. "Life is more difficult and full of challenges in the church than outside the church. If you preach Jesus and there is no reaction from the people you are preaching to, then you must know that it is not the true Jesus you are preaching," Phaswana said. There are currently three ministers serving Vhuilafuri Parish, with 15 congregations which are stretching from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) to Zamenkomste. Phaswana vowed to continue walking in the Light of God.

Water, roads in the spotlightThe lack of water, electricity and proper roads is one of the major problems the communities of Ha-Musekwa, Straighthardt and Khomele are experiencing.

This was highlighted during an imbizo attended by Premier Stan Mathabatha, various MECs and councillors of the Vhembe district at the Musekwa Sports Grounds on Friday.

“We are in the process of getting a water license to get water from the Nzhelele Dam. We have prom-ised the communities in Makhado during our May election campaign that the road between Makhado and Thohoyandou would be rebuilt, and I can tell the communities that we are still abiding by that promise,”

said Mathabatha. The MEC for Public Works and

Infrastructure, Mr Jerry Ndou, an-nounced that the Matavhela-Gogo-go-Ha-Mudimeli road will be tarred during the next financial year.

King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana congratulated the provincial govern-ment for taking the lead in changing the lives of his communities for the better. “We are excited that the government is not just visiting communities when they need votes, but even after elections they are engaging with the people who put them in office. We fully support the government’s plan of delivering bet-ter services to the people,” he said.

One of the community mem-bers who attended the imbizo, Ms

Christiana Munyai of the Home-Based Care Centres, said they had volunteered their ser-vices in helping sick patients for almost 13 years. She urged the government to provide them with jobs such as cleaners in various clinics and hospitals.

Millions to be spent on repairing town’s streets

Mall offers a dream wedding

By now, residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) might have noticed teams of road workers frantically repairing potholes, while also doing major con-struction work in certain streets.

Makhado municipal manager Mr Sakkie Mutshinyali enlightened rate-payers on the street repairs and how he went about to instil a positive attitude in workers. “In a year’s time, I don’t want to see any potholes,” Mutshinyali said, stating that pothole repairs start from mid-town before branching out to the suburbs. He was speaking at a meeting of the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association on 21 August.

Pretorius Street is totally dilapidated and is included in the R20 million set aside to upgrade Tshikota’s streets. Pretorius Street will then also be an entrance street from Tshikota’s side, bringing traffic

relief in Rissik Street. “Ruh Street is another street that gives me a headache,” Mutshinyali said. The rehabilitation of this street street is included in the budget to rehabilitate the CBD’s streets at a cost of R17.4 million. Kruger Street in the central business district is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Mutshinyali stressed the importance of durable paving in streets in the industrial area. “You can tar today and tomorrow a truck may have destroyed the road surface. We want those who have factories to have user-friendly roads since they are our largest tax contributors. We are going to work on the whole of the in-dustrial area,” Mutshinyali said. Funding of around R70 million has been put aside for the repair of streets in town in the next financial year. Some of the ratepayers pointed out places where the repairs were not up to standard and the municipal man-

ager invited them to send him the details, since he expected quality work.

Four teams are currently working on repairing potholes in town. Another two teams will join them after they had fin-ished their work in Vuwani and elsewhere. This newspaper spoke to the team leader of one of the teams repairing a large pot-hole at the corner of Munnik and Joubert Street. Mr Tanyani Muthambi said that his team consisted of seven EPWP (Expand-ed Public Works Programme) workers. “Though I have matric and some tertiary education, it is so good not to sit at home without a job. We really enjoy the work to patch potholes and repair the streets, so that the town will look neat,” said EPWP member Ms Andani Mamburu.

Mamburu’s positive attitude mirrored the great improvement in attitude of many municipal workers.

With spring just around the corner, Mall of the North in Polokwane is ready to celebrate wedding season in true style.

On 22 August, Mall of the North’s wedding competition officially kicked off. One lucky bride-to-be stands the chance of winning a dream wedding to the value of R150 000 and a brand new set of wheels with a sporty VW Polo TSi, valued at R200 000.

Entry forms for the competition

will be available in Beeld on 5 Sep-tember. The competition is open to anyone within the Beeld distribution area, while the dream wedding itself will take place in Polokwane and can be redeemed until September 2015.

The not-to-be missed wedding competition will culminate in the Mall of the North bridal fair from 26 October to 2 November, showca-sing the latest trends in planning the perfect wedding.

Mutshinyali recoun-ted how, at first, he would go to Shoprite to catch officials doing shopping in office hours. He also employed other measures, such as disci-plinary hearings.

“It was not easy, espe-cially when you have to turn around the mindset of people who were not used to working with dedication. Fortunately, the mayor supports me fully and no council-lors interfere with my work [of disciplining officials]. To be hon-est, some of them have really changed and are now trying their best,” Mutshinyali said.

This EPWP (Expanded Public Works Programme) team was seen repairing a large pothole at the corner of Munnik and Joubert Street. “We really enjoy the work to patch potholes and repair the streets, so that the town will look neat,” team member Andani Mamburu (third from right) said.

THE DEBT COLLECTION INDUSTRY AND THE CONSUMER It is a reality in the times we live in that most South Africans will probably at some stage be contacted by a debt collector for the payment of an outstanding amount. Whether the demand is for outstanding School fees, Rent and levies, unpaid accounts, TV licenses, medical bills or any other amount, the collection of these amounts if done by any other person than the person to whom the amount is owed in all likelihood falls under the auspices of the Council for debt collectors The principles applicable as well as the exceptions to this general rule is set out below. Who is a debt collector? A debt collector is any person or company other than an attorney or his employee who for reward collects debts owed to another on the latter’s behalf. Property Managers who collect arrear rent or levies are also debt collectors. Must a debt collector be registered? All debt collectors must register with the Council for Debt Collectors in order to operate. Failure to register before collecting a debt is a criminal offence. How do I know if the person contacting me is a debt collector? All debt collectors must produce proof of registration, on request. What do debt collectors do? They collect debts owed to another, by mail, phone or in person. They may deliver documents and may even have an acknowledgement of debt signed. What is an acknowledgement of debt? A legal document in terms whereof a party admits his liability to another, often coupled with an offer to pay off the debt in monthly instalments, and consent to judgment. Once signed such a document may lead to a court order being obtained without further notice to the debtor.

Who regulates the debt collector’s actions? The Council monitors the actions of debt collectors ensuring that their actions comply with the code of conduct for debt collectors and further ensuring that they charge only those fees allowed by the Act. What fees may debt collectors charge? The fees are prescribed by law, which include a fee for letters, telephone calls and a collection commission. Fees generally not recoverable are bank charges, and travelling expenses. Typical fees at date of print and contained in Schedule B of the Regulations are for example: Necessary Letter R17-00 Necessary Phone call R17-00 Consultation with debtor R41-00 Other necessary expenses R17-00 A debt collector is not entitled to claim more than R814-00 in fees or the capital amount due whichever amount is the lesser. It then follows that on a debt of R100 the fees charged may never exceed R100. A debt collector is also allowed 10% fee per instalment received in payment of a debt subject to a maximum of R407-00. Note: Collection commission agreed upon between the debt collector and the client cannot be recovered from a debtor. What should I do if a debt collector contacts me? • Make sure he or she is registered. Contact the Council for

clarification if necessary. • Listen carefully to what he or she says. • When in doubt obtain legal advice or approach the Council. What rights do debt collectors have? • They have the right to contact you for the payment of a debt • They have the right to charge the prescribed fees for the

work done in collecting a debt. What rights do I have? • The right to obtain legal advice before signing anything. In

the legal world your signature on a document like for instance a acknowledgement of debt can have serious financial consequences.

• To be treated with dignity at all times. • The right to confidentiality. • The right not to be contacted before 6 in the morning or

after 9 in the evening, or on a Sunday. • The right not to be harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or

threatened. • To receive a statement should you request one free of

charge once every six months.

• To have the account of a debt collector taxed by the clerk of the magistrate court; should I dispute the amount for fees charged by the debt collector.

• If unhappy with the conduct of a debt collector to report him to the Council for investigation and possible disciplinary steps.

Important points to remember • Attorneys and their employees do not fall under the

jurisdiction of the Council for Debt Collectors and are therefore answerable only to the relevant law societies.

• Micro lenders and others like furniture stores who collect their own debts need not register with the Council and therefore also fall outside the jurisdiction of the Council.

• Although you are entitled to collect your own debts without being registered as a debt collector, you are not entitled to demand any fees while doing so.

What to do if you have a complaint against a debt collector? • Debt collectors are regulated by the Council for Debt

Collectors and must comply with various laws, regulations and the code of conduct while performing their duties.

• If you have a complaint with regards to the fees you are being charged, have the account taxed by the clerk of the magistrate court.

• All complaints must be in writing and under oath. If you have a complaint against the actions or conduct of a debt collector or are unsure of your rights, contact: The Council for Debt Collectors PO BOX 836 Silverton Pretoria 0127 Tel: 012-8049808 Fax: 012-8040744 Email:[email protected] Website: www.cfdc.org.za For more information tune into the following Radio Stations; Phalabowra fm Univen Radio SKFM Broadcasting from 10:30 am to 11:00am on Thursday 11th Sep.

Mpheni Home Defenders win Mphekumatshi ChallengeMpheni Home Defenders hammer Phadziri FC 4-0 in the fi nal of the Mphe-kumatshi Soccer Challenge at Tshikota on Saturday.

Phadziri looked weary from the onset and never made any threatening moves. Their front-runner, Miyelani Khosa, was cautioned for obstruction on Aaron Lisoga in the early minutes of the game.

Defenders’ playmaker, Ndaedzo Maf-heda, could not live up to his fans’ expec-tations, as he was tightly marked.

the ball down in the middle of the park, giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased. Malvin Mafhalela opened the score in the 16th minute after receiving a beautiful pass from Arron Lisoga.

Defenders’ second goal came in the 35th minute, when Mushe Lisoga dribbled past three Phadziri defenders in a row and scored easily to make the halftime score 2-0. Defenders could have scored more than a dozen goals, had they managed to convert all their chances. Phadziri’s

striker, Londolani Munyai, missed a clear chance in the 60th minute.

His team mate, Rotshidzwa Muravha, committed a similar blunder two minutes later.

Defenders put matters beyond doubt when Edwin “Mnini” Mulaudzi scored his team’s third goal in the 77th minute. Mulaudzi hit the fi nal nail into the coffi n and completed his brace when he beat keeper Melton Ntshauba hands down with a ground cutter.

New kit for Thohoyandou Technical HighThe soccer team of Thohoyan-dou Technical High School will be parading in new colours in their coming matches.

This follows the decision by a well-known local business-man, Mr IIS Bapuji, to donate a complete soccer kit to the team. Bapuji is the owner of the Nzhelele Choice Build Hardware. He presented the new kit to the principal of the school, Mr MP Netshi-rondoni, last Tuesday.

Bapuji indicated in an interview that it was his company’s policy to plough some of its income back into the community. He added that they would con-tinue to assist needy

communities through donations and sponsorships in the future, depending on the fi nancial posi-tion of his business.

The team’s head coach, Mr Mbonisi Ndlovu, stated that the donation would go a long way in boosting the morale of the

players. Although Thohoyandou High School’s record in the schools’ league matches and tournaments is not impressive, they have something to be proud of. One of their midfielders, Thendo Mukumela, is regular player for the national U/17 team.

Plans underway to develop netball in MutalePlans are underway to develop future netball stars in Mutale, thanks to the generosity of Mr Fhatuwani Singo of The Best FJR Funerals.

Singo recently announced that he was

going to sponsor a netball league that will involve all primary and secondary schools in Mutale next year. He made the announcement during the prize-giving ceremony of the inaugural soccer and

netball tournament, known as "The Best Youth Development and Soccer Acade-my" held at Folovhodwe last Wednesday, August 27.

Singo, a budding businessman who was born and bred in Folovhodwe, said he intended to partner with the department of education in Mutale to develop netball by sponsoring its league annually.

Besides helping pu-pils to showcase their talent by sponsoring a soccer and netball tour-nament, he said it was crucial for him to spon-sor the netball league, so that more girls could become involved in sport. "When you go to our villages and schools, there is too much concentration on the development of soccer. By spon-soring a netball league for school, I will give girls an opportunity to showcase their talent," said Singo. During last week's tournament, four primary schools, Tshapinda, Folovhod-we, Muswodi and Ma-linge, and two second-ary schools, Dzimauli and Ratshibvumo, par-ticipated.

Ratshibvumo and Muswodi emerged as the winners of the soc-cer category and the winners of the netball were Malinge Prima-ry and Dzimauli Sec-ondary. The winning teams were given new soccer and netball kits, floating trophies and medals. All the top goal scorers received R150 each.

The DA's PR councillor in the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Humbulani Nengovhela, who walks with the aid of crutches and calliper shoes, is calling upon the members of the communities in the Vhembe district to take part in Casual Day.

This year's Casual Day takes place on 5 September (today). It is also a fund-raising day for persons with disabilities. School children and all communities are encouraged to buy stickers and T-shirts to support persons with disabilities.

“Those who wear stickers don’t have to wear uniforms and formal dresses,” said Nengovhela.

People are encouraged to be part of the thousands of South Africans who demonstrate that small actions can make a big difference. “We call it community spirit in action because we are exercising the spirit of ubuntu,” he said. “The needs of persons with disabilities are expensive. Blind people need expensive computers for learning and writing. They also need Braille machines and walking aids or sticks.”

He added that some of the disabled persons needed wheelchairs, which were seldom made available to them by public hospitals. He said there was a large number of disabled people who still did not have wheelchairs in the district.

“I know all this because I usually walk around distributing wheelchairs to those who don't have them,” he said. “I some-times manage to get a wheelchair or two from some generous business-people. Ask me and I will tell you that disabled people who don't have wheelchairs are really suffering, because they cannot move from one place to another. They can’t even get to school.”

According to Nen-govhela, the deaf also need learning aids or machines. “Let’s support persons with disabilities and help them fulfil their dreams of living a happy and burden-free life, like all us,” he said.

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga, officially opened a modern kitchen at Mufon-godi Primary School last Tuesday.

The kitchen was financed by the Road Accident Fund (RAF). Chi-kunga said that they had noticed that many schools were operating without proper kitchens and decided to assist.

She stressed that the RAF was se-rious about education and expressed the hope that the new facility would motivate the pupils to work harder. According to her, the RAF is engaged in several initiatives to develop the community.

The chief executive officer of the RAF, Dr Eugene Watson, said that their social intervention programmes were guided by five critical pillars:

poverty alleviation, environmental impact, education, health and road safety. "The needs of millions of citizens are simply too great for the government to deliver on alone. Those needs have to be addressed in a meaningful way, in a concerted and compassionate drive to touch and uplift our people in a sustainable manner."

They also constructed a ramp for wheelchair users at the school.

The headmaster of Mufongodi Primary, Mr Edson Ramuhulu, was over the moon and thanked the RAF for their kind gesture. He appealed to other companies "to follow the giant step taken by the RAF to plough something significant back into the community."

Deputy Minister Sindiswa Chikunga cuts the ribbon during the official opening of the kitchen. Among the onlookers are the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liason, Ms Mapula Mokaba, and Makhado Mayor David Mutavhatsindi.

The four men, Job Basi Tlou from Mahlanga in Mpumalanga, Percy Manengena from Alldays, and Johannes Podile and Lebala Sematla, both from the farm Den Staat, were arrested after a rhino poaching at Mapungubwe on 23 July. The fifth suspect, who can only be identified after his bail application, was arrest-ed when he attended the bail hearing of the other four on Tuesday, 26 August.

Following the arrest, the bail proceedings were postponed until 26 September when all five suspects will appear together.

“We are happy with the progress that is being made in this re-gard. Our environmen-tal crime investigation team, together with the South African Police Services, has worked very hard in bringing these perpetrators to book,” said SANParks acting head of com-munications Reynold Thakhuli.

The Thohoyandou police and the Mudau family of Muledane are making an appeal to people who might know the whereabouts of Mr Wilson Ndwamato Mudau (73) of Muledane. He went missing on Friday, 29 August this year. He was last seen wearing a red and brown jacket, a green and brown t-shirt, green trousers and red shoes. Those with information area asked to phone Const Lusani Kwinda at 083 355 2787.

During the presenatation are, from left to right, Ruben Matsa (sponsor), Rendani Mudau, George Maphala and Pastor Tshilidzi Makakavhule Maluleke.

Benny’s Care were crowned champions of Ndivhuwo Fu-neral Undertakers soccer competition when they beat Gogobole Bucs 5-4 in the final at Gogobole on Sunday.

The winner was determined by a penalty shoot-out after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in regulated time.

Black Leopards collected their first point of the season by holding Jomo Cosmos to a 1-1 draw in their National First Division League match at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Thembi-sa on Sunday.

The result is not a true re-flection of the game, as Lidoda Duvha were by far the better side when it came to ball possession throughout the game. Leopards

squandered numerous obvious scoring chances before they fi-nally found the net via Leonard Ntshangase in the 19th minute. Cosmos fought back through Edwin Serakalala seven minutes before the final whistle.

Witbank Spurs gave their fans their money’s worth by crushing Cape Town All Stars 2-0 at the Themba Senamela Stadium in Witbank. Vasco da Gama gave

Royal Eagles no chance. They beat them 1-0 at the Parow Park Stadium in Cape Town. Baroka shared the glory with Thanda Royal Zulu, following their goalless draw at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

African Warriors played to a 1-1 draw with FC Cape Town at the Charles Mopeli Stadium in Phuthaditjaba. The visitors from Cape Town were the first to

Benny’s approached the match like a house on fire, with their mid-fielders distributing some telling passes to the strikers. Bucs was strong in the far back and striking depart-ments, but lacked co-hesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of Bucs were ballooned from behind.

Benny’s deserved the victory.

From the onset their midfielders were dictat-ing terms and their strik-ers kept on unleashing rockets from outside the

box. Lutendo Nndwambi of Bucs missed the ball and Mutshidzi Nemaxwi of Bennys received the ball and beat keeper Khongelani Mathonsi easily, to make half-time score 1-0.

In the early minutes of the second half, Elelwani Marubini made his presence felt. He un-leashed a powerful shot from

outside the box and the keeper of the opponents watched in disbelief when the ball crossed the goal line to equalise.

Tsie Nndwambi, Lutendo Mabasa and Thomas Nhlongo of Bucs and Marubini Manyane of Benny’s were booked for different infringements during the match.

find the net. Their lethal striker, David Masondo, headed home after a cor-ner kick that was taken by Freddy Zulu.

After beating Black Leopards 1-0 at the Tho-hoyandou Stadium two weeks ago, Lamontville Golden Arrows played to a goalless draw with Milano United FC at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban.

Santos registered a 3-2 victory at the ex-pense of Maluti FET College at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town last Friday evening. Santos were two goals ahead when the teams adjourned for half time. Garankuwa United col-lected full points by beating the newly pro-moted Highlandspark at the Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria.

That was the first victory for Garankuwa United.

Kermit Erasmus of Orlando Pirates battles with Vukile Mngqibisa of Polokwane City during an Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. Pirates beat City, the only representative of Limpopo in the Absa Premiership, 3-0. The goal scorers for Pirates were Erasmus, Thabo Qalinge and Lehlohonolo Majoro. KK gained momentum as the game approached the half-way mark, but it was difficult for them to find their way through the rock-solid defence of Takers.

KK effected two changes to their starting lineup earlier in the last half. They introduced Konanani Sibara and Mashudu Malusha for Arthur Mtileni and Mulalo Liphadzi respectively. The defence of Takers started

to run for cover soon after KK’s replacements. Maweja replaced Takalani Mashila with Takalani Ramagalela in a bid to neutralize the opponents.

That was not good enough to dilute the power of KK’s fast forwards as they continued to fire on all cylinders.

The keeper of Maweja Takers, Ndamulelo Thathaisa, made his presence felt in the 78th minute.

He stretched to the limit to ex-ecute a brilliant save, following Fhatuwani Mudau’s close-range ground cutter.

The game turned lukewarm in the last 15 minutes.

Makungo Azwifarwi of Maweja (left) and Rendani Mudau of KK chase the ball.

The National Lotteries Board (NLB) would like to invite qualifying organisations that support the development of sports at grassroots level to apply for funding, says Charlotte Thabang Mampane, chief executive officer of the NLB.

She mentioned in a media statement that the scope of the funding programme is in line with the government’s policy to support all sporting codes in South Africa.

The NLB allocates a total of close to R2 billion each financial year in funding to various qualifying organisations covering charities, arts and culture organisations and sporting entities.

“We would like to take this opportunity to en-courage all interested schools and clubs to forward their application to the NLB as early as possible, observing the funding criteria and procedures to avoid disappointment. Failure to comply with the regulations and prescribed guidelines will result in the application automatically being disqualified,” says Mampane. “We would also like to reiterate the fact that, annually, the NLB receives requests for funding amounting to more than R70 billion, a figure that is well in excess of the funds available for distribution,” says Mampane.

The NLB will give preference to sports clubs and no-fee schools (quintile 1,2 and 3) in poor, previously disadvantaged and rural communities that support capacity building (training of coaches and technical officials), universal access to facilities and provision or upgrading of access facilities for people with disabilities.

“The government, through its various depart-ments and agencies such as the NLB, will continue to support sports because it is an indispensable part of social cohesion and enhances physical and mental well-being. Our country owes, to a large degree, our political stability and the social inte-gration process to the near miraculous transition to democracy to the significant role played by sports,” says Mampane.

“South Africa has also demonstrated at the Com-monwealth Games, held recently in Scotland, that we have a wealth of talent and it is imperative that we support the development of our sporting talent from an early age,” concludes Mampane.

Applications forms are available at the NLB head offices in Pretoria or online at www.nlb.org.za. The NLB will also conduct capacity-building exercises across the country to assist beneficiaries with limited resources to ensure that they meet all the requirements and are able to submit all the mandatory supporting documents, such as properly formatted financial statements, among others, in order to be considered for a grant.

Tshakhuma Na Ndilani through to final of Amos TournamentTshakhuma Na Ndilani FC booked a place in the final of the Amos Shield Soccer Tournament by beating Tshakhuma RO United 1-0 at the fully packed Tshakhuma Malaria grounds on Sunday.

The defence of Tshakhuma Na Ndilani, or Makhurabada as they are affectionately called, which was marshaled by the vastly experienced Tshifhiwa Mmbooi, was untouchable.

Elvis Netshidongololo of RO Unit-ed found himself on the wrong side of the football laws in the 14th minute. He tackled Ndamulelo Mukwevho from behind and Referee Eric Munyai was lenient enough to let him go with yellow, when everyone thought he deserved red.

Lufuno “CJ” Mugodi of United was unlucky in the 24th minute. He received a beautiful pass from Thivhulawi Silima just outside the penalty box and unleashed aimlessly, instead of picking a spot and sending

the keeper the wrong way. Tshakhu-ma Na Ndilani took the lead in the 29th minute. Rofhiwa Netshiungani dribbled past the keeper and scored easily after a neat pass from Oscar Mulangaphuma.

United’s strikers let them down as they continued to fumble at the goal finish. Ndamulelo Mukwevho, the left winger of Tshakhuma Na Ndilani, was booked towards the end of the first half for obstructing Mulisa Lu-vhengo. Tshakhuma RO United came back strongly in the last half. They created several dangerous moves from the middle of the park, but the defenders of Makhurabada, Tshifhiwa Mmbooi and Sedzazwau Mushoma, blocked their way effectively.

Makhurabada will play against the winner between FC KK and Maweja Takers in the final. KK and Takers will meet in their decider at the Tshakhuma Malaria grounds tomorrow.

The Makhado Local Football Association’s U/15 team proved all the critics wrong and beat the much-feared FNB Makwarela 4-3 in the fi nal of the FNB U/15 regional championship at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

Makwarela took the game to their opponents from the onset, but their strikers were unlucky. Makhado relaxed on the ball and frustrated their opponents by playing aerial balls from behind. Shadrack Ndlovu, the Makwarela diminutive dribbling wizard, was a diffi cult player to contain. He was everywhere,

creating defence-splitting moves from behind, while at the same time overlapping to assist the strikers from time to time.

Makwarela threatened to score in the 18th min-ute. Their left winger, Tshifhiwa Muthuphei, un-leashed a volley from the edge of the box. The ball hit the woodwork and bounced back into the fi eld of play. Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, Makhado forgot about scoring and channeled all their energy into the defence.

That resulted in Makwarela’s launching numer-ous attacks from the middle of the park. Makhado did not panic, despite the fact that the opponents were dictating terms in all departments in the last 10 minutes of the fi rst half. To prove that they were not concerned about scoring, three of the four players Makhado introduced in the last half were defenders.

Makwarela replaced Tshifhiwa Muthuphei and Ntanganedzeni Muthivhi with Mulisa Nephawe and Aluwani Mudau respectively in a bid to strengthen their striking force. That did not change the com-plexion of the game as the scoreboard remained blank until the fi nal whistle was blown. The winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out.
