    FROM THE PASTORS DESK

    Dear Parish Family,

Peace and all good! This weekend marks the Third Sunday

in Lent. How are you doing with your Lenten resolutions at

this point? How are we doing as a parish family in terms of

embracing the disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving

which are intended to make us more aware of our depend-

ence upon God and of our need for conversion? If youre stuck at this point or feel that your best Lenten

intentions have somehow gotten derailed, take heart. You

can push the restart button at any time and get going again.

Its not about perfection; the journey is bound to be a bit

wobbly for most of us. The important thing is to keep going.

Just put one step in front of the other.

The whole concept of stepstaking steps, for example

permeates the Lenten experience. In todays Gospel reading

from John (2:13-25), Jesus takes some rather drastic steps to

confront the Temple authorities in Jerusalem with their hy-

pocrisy and corruption. When challenged by the money

changers and stall owners whom He has expelled from the

Temple precincts, Jesus asserts His identity, His purpose, and

    His authority.

Jesus took steps to call attention to the real purpose and

meaning of the Temple as the House of God. We are called to

take steps in our Lenten observance to rediscover and re-

claim the purpose and meaning of our lives as followers of

    Jesus.

One of the most important steps we can takeboth indi-

vidually and collectivelyis to reflect upon our lives, our deci-

sions, our habits of heart and mind, our attitudes and beliefs.

Weall of us are challenged to make a frank assessment of

the ways in which our missteps have caused us to turn away

from God, from others, and from ourselves. Our Catholic Christian tradition is at heart a sacramental

onewe believe most profoundly in the importance and effi-

cacy of the sacred moments given to us by Jesus which reas-

sure us of the power of His Presence and Love. Moreover, we

are invited in an especially poignant way during this Lenten

season to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation in prepa-

    ration for Easter.

Now, lets be really frank. Reconciliation is the one sacra-

ment many Catholics absolutely dread. You did what?! How

many times?! The stern admonishments of some harsh and

insensitive confessors experienced in childhood or at a par-

ticularly vulnerable moment in life have needlessly driven

people away from the celebration of what should be and is amost beautiful moment in which we experience the deep

compassion and restorative Love of the Presence of Jesus.

Always remember, my professor in confessional counseling

urged, people have sinned against God, notagainst you, the

confessor! So, be gentle with people.

As one of the many blessings of the Second Vatican Coun-

cil, I believe that in todays Church, we now have a deeper,

healthier, and more compassionate understanding of sacra-

mental Reconciliation. Its not a matter of the scrupulous

Saint Patrick: A Missionary for our Time

The conversion of Ireland to the Christian faith, attributedin the main to St. Patrick, was achieved without the spilling ofblood. People are often surprised by this. Patrick and his fel-low missionaries seemed to have had an appreciation for theculture they encountered in Ireland which was pagan anddeeply spiritual. The Druid culture had a huge love for crea-

tion, for relationships of family and friendship and it consid-ered nature sacred. Patrick took the gospel and presented itto the Celtic people as a confirmation of what they alreadybelieved but with the addition of the Blessed Trinity, Christ asSavior and the Church as the body of Christ. Pagan holywells, for example, where people went to drink for cureswere blessed and called after saints so that people continuedthe practice of visiting them but with a new faith based onChrist and honoring his Blessed Mother. Mountains, sacred tothe Celtic people because they were thought to be shroudedin mystery and occupied by the gods, became places of pil-grimage where people ascended to encounter the living God.Holy Islands served as places of penance where people, oncesuperstitious, came to value fasting and prayer in solitude as

atonement for sin and a cleansing of the spirit. St. PatrickChristianized pagan practices and beliefs by adding whathad been missing - the One God, Creator of all. Patrick con-verted the Celtic people of Ireland by respecting the spiritualpractices and beliefs he found upon his arrival and offeringthem the missing link, Christ and the Good News. Though helived well over a thousand years ago, St. Patrick is most defi-nitely a saint for our time. His ministry was defined by a re-spect for difference, cultural diversity and gentle courage. We would do well to listen to him again as we present theGood News in our diverse community today.

We will celebrate St. Patrick on SaturdayMarch 17 with Mass at 5:00 p.m. followed byPot Luck in the Parish Dining Room. Pleasebring something to share if you are joining us an appetizer, entre or dessert. Simply drop offyour dish or platter before Mass at the DiningRoom and pick it up later before you leave.

Diane and Jim Manning would love to hearfrom you if you would like to help with set-up and/or clean-up. You may reach them at760-724-3319.

Cad mle filte! A hundred thousand welcomes!

rendering of a laundry list of misdemeanors (with, perhaps,

the occasional, mumbled felony sandwiched in). Rather, we

now stress and celebrate our confidence in and gratitude to-

wards a loving and gracious God who is always ready to wel-

come us home. This is not to minimize the reality and seri-

ousness of sin, but rather to remind us of the infinite mercy

    (loving kindness) of our God.

This year, think about taking advantage of celebrating the

Sacrament of Reconciliationeither at one of our communal

Penance services this coming week (March 15, 7pm and

March 17, 10am) or at any one of the services offered at any

one of the 12 parishes that form our local deanery (check

page #4 for details.) These community-wide celebrations

remind us that all of us stand in need of Gods healing grace

and that our attitudes and actions affect other people. Lets

take this important step in our spiritual growth and journey

    together.

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

THE CATECHETICAL MINUTEROMAN MISSALThe Nicene Creed Part 3By the Holy Spirit was incarnate...The simple change from

bornto incarnate is one of the most important improve-

ments in the new translation of the Creed, because it more

accurately conveys the truth of the Incarnation the moment

when the Son of God took flesh. This wording more accu-

rately reflects the Latin text of the Mass which includes the

word incarnates (incarnate). There was concern that the previous wording/translation

could be interpreted to mean that Christ did not actually be-

come man until the moment he was born. The reality is that

the Son of God took on human nature from the moment of

his conception. The Blessed Virgin Marys yes to the Archan-

gel Gabriel at the Annunciation is the moment when the Son

first came down from heaven to dwell among us. In using

the term, incarnate the new translation removes all ambigu-

ity in our professing our faith in the Creed. The significance of

this line is liturgically emphasized by the fact that we bow

while saying it, as an expression of reverence to the mystery

of the Incarnation.Suffered deaththis replaces two verbs in the previous

    translation, suffered died. The Latin is somewhat ambiguous;

literally it is he suffered and was buried, and the word suf-

fered implies his dying. Because the verb died is not in the

Latin text suffered death is seen as a better way to express

what happened to Jesus. The point is that he really died, and

that is what gives his Resurrection its full meaning.

Describing the Resurrection as being in accordance with

the Scriptures speaks inclusively of the New Testament in

addition to fulfillmentof Old Testament prophecy.

The next and last part of the Nicene Creed Adored

8 |PARROQUIAMISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California 11 de marzo del 2012

    Querida Familia Parroquial,

Paz y todo bien! Este fin de semana marca el Domingo

Tercero de Cuaresma. Cmo ests llevando hasta hoy tus

resoluciones de Cuaresma? Cmo estamos haciendo,

Ahora, seamos verdaderamente francos.

    gente.

No

est ms all de nuestra terminologa normal.
