According to Juran…

Juran defines quality as "fitness for use”

Juran goes on further to quantify "fitnessfor use" in two different categories :

1. Product features that meet customerneeds

2. Freedom from deficiencies

Quality Trilogy

The role of quality planning is to design aprocess that will be able to meet establishedgoals under operating conditions.

The role of quality control is to operate andwhen necessary correct the process so thatit performs with optimal effectiveness.

The role of quality improvement is to deviseways to take the process to unprecedentedlevels of performance.

Quality Planning  Quality Planning involves :

– Identifying customers, both internal and external

– Determining their needs

– Specifying the product features that satisfy

those needs at minimum cost.

– Designing the processes that can reliablyproduce those features.

– Proving that the process can achieve its goals

under operating conditions.

Juran Trilogy2. Quality Control

The process of managing operationsto meet quality goals.

– Choosing units of measurement

– Establishing a measurement procedure

– Measuring

– Interpreting differences between measurement andgoal.

– Taking action to correct significant differences

Juran Trilogy3. Quality Improvement

Assuming the process is undercontrol, any waste that occurs

must be inherent in the designof the process.

The object of qualityimprovement is to reducechronic waste to a much lowerlevel.

Ten Steps to QualityImprovement

6. Report Progress

7. Give Recognition

8. Communicate Results

MOTOROLA -- (reduced defects inmanufactured products)

SHELL -- (41% maintenance cost reduction)

DUPONT -- (reduced cost, increase salesand working capital; $175,000 pre-taxearnings)

Government Agencies -- (e.g. U.S. Customsincreased promptness of service forpassengers moving through border

crossings)
