    IN TODAYS GOSPELLk. 1:61-64

But his mother said in reply, "No. He will be called John." But they answered her, "There is no one among your relatives who has this name." So they madesigns, asking his father what he wished him to be called. He asked for a tablet and wrote, "John is his name," and all were amazed. Immediately his mouth

was opened, his tongue freed, and he spoke blessing God.

St. Francis heard the Lord speak to him, saying: Go and rebuild my Church.

    FROM FR. ADRIAN

Now that First Communions and Confirmation arebehind us and the Parish School is closed things are just a little quieter at the parish building these days.Lots happening over at the Mission though with theretrofit underway at last! Its noisy for those of us who

live alongside but it will be well worth it when we openthe doors of the beautiful historic church in December, perhaps even in time for Christmas, if all goes accord-ing to plan.

I conducted the long retreat in Ireland at the begin-ning of June taking as my theme, Repairing theHouseBuilding the Kingdom. It was a great experi-ence, emotional and challenging with the Church inIreland going through dark times in the wake of sexualabuse and misconduct as well as mismanagement andcover up by those in leadership. All of Europe is in thegrip of fierce and quite aggressive secular forces thatwant to sideline the Church and reduce its influence tothe minimum. But Ireland has had the Christian faithsince the fourth century and in the past has beenthrough what the old hymn calls dungeon, fire and sword. My feeling is that the Church will be purifiedby suffering and will emerge again as a beacon of lightand hope in the darkness and emptiness of unbelief.During the retreat I used St. Francis as an example of how a very ordinary Christian can repair the damage tothe House of the Faith, the Church how truth canlead to forgiveness and peace when compassion is thefoundation upon which the House is built. Only once, when an older woman took my hand outside the frontdoor of the church after Mass and said, Thank you forcoming all this way to see us, did I lose my compo-sure. I was deeply moved by the strength and faithful-ness of the people I met and by their gentle serenity inhard times for those who love the Faith.

Fr. Luis celebrated his birthday on June 15 and wasserenaded outside his window in the Mission at 4:40A.M. by a group of parishioners with guitars led by ourintrepid Director of Worship, Lupe Rios. I think I would

have sprayed them with cold water at that time of themorning, but Fr. Luis, as kind as ever, took them in andrewarded them with pan dulces and hot chocolate, atraditional birthday treat in Mexico.

We have ordered the icons for the Parish Chapel butI hear that everyone wants St. Anthony!! What is itabout Anthony of Padua, even after eight hundredyears, which makes him so popular? When I was inIreland we had his feast day celebration on June 13

and the church was packed to the doors at Masses, morning and evening, in his honor. Everybody loves St.Anthony. He was, by all accounts, a gentle and humbleperson who was kindly and persuasive in his preachingand strong in his defense of the rights of the poor. Any-how, only one person can buy the icon for the Chapel, but we do have St. Francis and St Clare as well as oth-

erssolets talk!!Wishing you a peaceful week ahead,

SCHOOL NEWS:The Catechetical MinuteRoman Missal Questions

What is the Preface? The preface is the actual beginning of the Eucharistic

prayer. It is introduced by responses that are very ancient. This exchange of prayer between the celebrant and thepeople is in a sense a liturgical prayer of dialogue; it is as

though the people complete the prayers of the priest. Thecelebrant prays:The Priest raising his hands, continues: Lift up your hearts

The people: We lift them up to the Lord In the next set of responses the celebrant invites the

people to join in the Eucharist (a word that means thanks-giving) as he asks them to give thanks to God to which theyrespond It is right and just.

The language of the prayer now changes; it is reflectingthe transition, that the celebrant is now directly acknowl-edging the people in whose name he prays to God. Overand over we hear how we are directed to fulfill our duty as

Gods chosen people. This language comes out of the Ro-man heritage of the Missal, which is deeply law-bound.The invitation leads us to enter into the great prayer of thanksgiving together. Every Preface reaches conclusion inthe acclimation of the Holy, Holy, Holy.

The first part of this well known hymn is from theprophet Isaiah 6:3 describing the first vision before thethrone of God. This ancient text was used by the Jewishpeople during the Synagogue Liturgy, the Kedusha, beforethe opening of the ark holding the Torah.

The second part, beginning with the word Blessed istaken from Matthew 21:9 describing Jesus entry into Jeru-

salem. The Holy, Holy, Holy is truly a Hymn and where pos-sible should always be sung.In the next article on this question, the core Prayers of

the Preface and the reasons for the 49 Prefaces that arefound in the Order of the Mass will be covered.

    FA I T H F O R M AT I O N EVENTS AT THE MISSION/RETREAT CMessage of St. Francis forContemporary Society

July 6 8, 2012 With Brother Mark Schroder, OFM

The relevance of St. Francis and the actions of Franciscanwomen and men for over 800 years can help us address

We willput a Franciscan-spin onto this by prayerfully using Scrip-ture, art, contemplation and a sense of humor.

Brother Mark is living at the St. Francis Friary in Sacra-mento. He is working at a non-profit agency that provideshousing options for homeless folks. He lived for sevenyears at Mission San Luis Rey, moving three years ago.

cuyo nombre ora a Dios.

Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
