HOLY WEEKFor the Palm Sunday Gospel, we return to the Gos-

pel according to Mark. The account of the Passiontakes up nearly one-third of Mark's entire Gospel and,of all the evangelists, he is the one who presents thedetails most graphically. He depicts the humanity ofJesus most intensely, describing his sufferings thor-

oughly. Mark portrays Jesus as a complete fulfillmentof the "Suffering Servant" of Isaiah, the obedient,humble slave dying on a cross of whom Paul speaks inPhilippians. But it is important to remember that wecall this "Holy Week" and not "sad week" or "sufferingweek," for each of the readings today, even the lamen-tations of the psalm, end in the promise of thestrength and hope that is granted by God to those whofaithfully give of themselves in love. As we enter intothis week through these readings, we must reflectdeeply on the sufferings of Jesus, but still be confidentin the joy of risen, eternal life that awaits all of us whofaithfully walk with him through these days.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Although the procession with palms has an unforgetta-ble grip on our imagination, the real emphasis of this day'sliturgy is contained in its name: The Sunday of the Lord'sPassion. Since 1955, the old custom of a blessing of palmswith procession of the people has marked the entry of theChurch into a time so rich that it is called "Holy Week."

The center of today's liturgy, however, is the solemn read-ing of the Passion, this year taken from Mark's Gospel.Our community is to be transformed by its celebration ofEaster, and so this week everything is made new. Soon,the bishop will celebrate the "Chrism Mass" when the holyoils for the sacraments will be completely replenished andblessed, and transported from the cathedral to every par-ish. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon ofspringtime. Be on the lookout later this week for this"paschal" moon, rising in the east at the precise momentthe sun sets in the west. Imagine: a day when there is nota single moment when the earth is not bathed in light

from the heavens. We are on the threshold of the threegreat days (Triduum): Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, begin-ning at sunset on Thursday when the parish gathers inresponse to the Lord's command: "Do this in memory ofme."

ADULT CONFIRMATION

(WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE)

What Catholics Believe is a process of introduction andreview of the basic beliefs of the Catholic Faith. At ourparish this program is our Adult Confirmation Process. Thetwelve sessions of the program are media based and areinteractive quizzes on the Catholic Faith.

Confirmation is the sacrament required to be a Godpar-ent and to celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Our classes began on Friday March 2nd at 6:30pm andcontinue into May finishing before our parish celebrationof Confirmation on Sunday June 3rd. Questions? Call BillBischoff at 547-0702.

How can I hear what Godis saying to me? We tryto listen more closely tothe voice of God withinus. One of the ways for

me to hear Gods voice is by noticing what is going on inmy life, Gods words through reading the Bible, and lis-

tening attentively to other peoples stories. God workspowerfully through people helping each other to makeconnections between everyday life and faith.

There is often so little time to notice what is happen-ing to us. A Small Christian Community can be themeans of becoming aware of Gods help within ourlives. A Small Christian Community is a group of 8 to 12adults, or families, who come together, usually in eachothers homes, weekly or every other week to sharesomething of their stories with one another. They alsodig deeper into the Sunday Scriptures to discover Gods

story. They are much like the early church.The Mission San Luis Rey Core Team invites you toconsider joining an SCC. All cultures are welcomed to join or start a group (8 to 12 people). SEMANA SANTA

Por el Evangelio del Domingo de Ramos, volvemos alEvangelio segn San Marcos. El relato de la Pasin ocupacasi un tercio de todo el Evangelio segn Marcos y, de todoslos evangelistas, l es quien presenta los detalles ms grfi-cos. Marcos representa la humanidad de Jess con mayorintensidad, describiendo sus sufrimientos a fondo. Presenta

a Jess como el cumplimiento completo del Siervo sufrien-te de Isaas, el esclavo humilde y obediente que muere enla cruz y de quien Pablo habla a los filipenses. Pero es impor-tante recordar que a esto lo llamamos Semana Santa y nosemana triste o semana de sufrimiento, porque cadauna de las lecturas de hoy, incluso los lamentos del Salmo,terminan con la promesa de la fuerza y la esperanza que sonotorgadas por Dios a los que fielmente dan de s mismos enamor. A medida que entramos a esta semana por va de es-tas lecturas, debemos reflexionar profundamente sobre lossufrimientos de Jess, pero con la tranquilidad de la alegrade la vida resucitada y eterna que nos espera a todos los que

Esta es Semana Santa, semana en la cual los cristianosconmemoramos con palmas, y ramos los eventos centra-les de nuestra fe; eventos que alimentan nuestro espritucon el pan y el vino del amor divino; eventos que se cla-van en nuestras almas como Cristo en su cruz; eventosque nos hacen resucitar de nuestros problemas con laesperanza pascual de la liberacin de todo aquello que

nos perjudica, que nos agobia, que nos oprime y nos de-prime.

Estaremos all con nuestros parientes y con gente queno conocemos pero que son nuestros hermanos y herma-nas en Cristo gracias a los eventos de la semana en queJess entr glorioso a Jerusaln, parti el pan, falleci enel rbol de la cruz y fue sepultado. Esta Semana nos uneal misterio pascual de Jess. Celebrando estos ritos anti-guos y variados por todo el mundo. Durante esta semanael tiempo y el espacio se cancelan para unirnos a los mis-terios que celebramos, a nuestras familias, a los cristianospor todo el mundo y a travs de los siglos.
