EDITORIAL.....Friends in the age of social media

I wake up in the morningand remember it is myfriend’s birthday. I like tomake my own greetingcards. I arrive at my friend’sdoorstep with card and a giftonly to be greeted with asnarl. “You did not wish meon my birthday.” I am on thedefensive for a moment be-fore I reminded my friendthat I had called up to wishhim that morning. My friendis unimpressed. “You neverwished me on Facebook.”

So that’s the truth ofsocial media. A birthday isnot complete unless youhave been wished onFacebook. But is that all thathas changed?BeforeFacebook happened, all ofus had under a dozenfriends. Unless you wereMiss India in which case youcould be excused for havinghad a hundred friends.Among adult Facebook us-ers, the average number offriends is 338, and the me-dian (midpoint) number offriends is 200. That basi-cally means half of the bil-lion odd people onFacebook have less than 200friends. Maybe these are theintroverts. Another half abillion people on Facebookhave more than 200 friends.

There is somethingwrong with this equation. Ifthe world is full of friendsbumping into each other onFacebook, who is fightingthe wars we keep hearingabout on television? I sus-pect it is that half of human-ity which is restricting itselfto only 200 friends. Theyaren’t working hardenough. The definition ofwho we term as a friend haschanged. Everyone is afriend – your colleague, your parents, relatives andeven the odd neighborhoodcat is on everyone’s friendlist. The number of friends

you have on Facebook is thenew status symbol. If youhave anything less than 338friends, you will be respon-sible for ruining the conver-sation. It is like going to aparty of billionaires anddropping a bombshell byannouncing you have ex-actly twenty bucks on you.And no you did not meantwenty billion.

Even a zoo has dif-ferent enclosures for differ-ent animals but notFacebook. Your spouse, cur-rent girlfriend, heartthrob-in-office, neighborhoodhottie and even ex-girl-friend are all clubbed to-gether in one enclosure. It isbound to createcomplications. As my twenty-something colleague pointsout that the spouse will of-ten ask, “Why is your ex al-ways the first one to “like”every photo and comment ofyours? Is he still interestedor is he simply stalking you?Do you still chat with himon the side?”

College life is get-ting complicated. You can-not tell your friends not totext you during class whenthey see you posting selfieseven as the Professor isdishing out generous help-ings of knowledge. Or whenyou hear someone say, “Noshe is not like a friend …you know, she is just aFacebook friend.”

There is this beauti-ful proverb that says, “Thefirst time you share tea withsomeone, you are a stranger. The second time you taketea, you are an honoredguest. The third time youshare a cup of tea, you be-come family.”Until we areable to do that, we have tolive the way people now de-scribe their relationshipstatus these days – “It’scomplicated.”

Green tea ingredient mayhelp kill oral cancer cells

A green tea ingredient mayactivate a procedure that killsoral cancer cells, leavinghealthy cells intact, accordingto a recent study.

The study could pavethe way for oral cancer treat-ment and also other forms ofcancer treatments, as perfood scientists from Pennsyl-vania StateUniversity.Previous studiesrevealed that the compoundknown as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which isfound in green tea, destroyedoral cancer cells and did notharm healthy cells.

The new studyshows that EGCG may acti-vate a process that causescell death.

Joshua Lambert, as-sociate professor of food sci-

ence and co-director of PennState's Center for Plant andMushroom Foods for Healthsaid in a statement, "EGCGis doing something to damagethe mitochondria and that mi-tochondrial damage sets up acycle causing more damageand it spirals out, until the cellundergoes programmed celldeath."It appears that thecompound EGCG leads to theformation of reactive oxygenspecies in cancer cells, which, in turn, damages themitochondria. The mitochon-dria responds by producingmore reactive oxygenspecies. With this continualmitochondrial death, the can-cer cell also decreases theexpression of anti-oxidantgenes, thus lowering its de-fenses.

Hydrogen Sulfide CouldHelp Lower Blood Pressure

Research has indicated thata new compound, calledAP39, which generatesminute quantities of the gashydrogen sulfide inside cells, could be beneficial in casesof high blood pressure anddiseases of the blood vesselsthat occur with ageing anddiabetes. In such conditions, the body’s own levels of hy-drogen sulfide are depleted, thought to be consumed byoxidants in the tissues andblood. Now, in laboratorytests, studies led by Univer-sity of Exeter MedicalSchool, in collaboration withthe Slovak Academy of Sci-ences, found that replenishingthese levels through tinydoses of AP39 yielded signifi-cant benefits. The work, sup-ported by the Slovak Re-search and DevelopmentAgency and published in theNitric Oxide Journal specialedition on hydrogen sulfide, found that administration ofAP39 to animals with highblood pressure significantlylowered heart rate, blood

pressure and blood vesselstiffness.Professor MattWhiteman, of the Universityof Exeter Medical School, who led the study, said: “Thisresearch significantly adds toour growing body of evidencethat hydrogen sulfide couldhold the key to new and ef-fective therapies in humans. We are still at an early stage, but so far the key to successappears to be getting hydro-gen sulfide delivered to theright place inside cells andmimicking the way the bodynaturally produces this gas.The mechanism may bethrough blocking a calciumchannel on the heart thatregulates heartbeat, slowingit down. Clinically used drugswhich also block this chan-nel have similar effects, butmore than 10 fold higherdoses are required.”

The research teamis now investigating the ef-fects of AP39 in other mod-els of heart and blood vesseldisease, such as cardiac ar-rest and heart attacks.

Have guts, amendConstitution: Mamata dares BJP

KOLKATA: Coming downheavily on forced religiousconversions West Bengal ChiefMinister Mamata Banerjee, ina veiled attack on the BharatiyaJanata Party (BJP) Friday, challenged it to amend thesecular Indian Constitution.

"Why should some-one force others to convert?Who gave them that responsi-bility? Some people are sayingthis religion is good, that isbad. Don't ride the rickshawpulled by a man of this reli-gion... etc.

"They are controllingpeople; they don't know whenyou are in power you mustpractice good governance first.Good governance doesn'tmean controlling others. Youcan't control anybody's rights.

"Secularism is en-shrined in the Constitution. Ifyou want to do that (control)and if you have the guts thengo and amend the Constitu-tion, change it...," Banerjeesaid at a function here.

The Trinamool Con-

gress (TMC) supremo's com-ments came a day after an FIRwas registered against VishwaHindu Parishad (VHP) chiefPravin Togadia and function-ary Jugal Kishore for hurtingreligious sentiments followingthe alleged conversion of over100 tribals in West Bengal.Banerjee said people are usingmoney to convert people.

"What kind of reli-gious conversions? Forciblysome people are indulging inreligious conversions by giv-ing money.

"Tribal people are ourpride. Why do they have toundergo conversion. They willdecide for themselves," shesaid.

The TMC had allegedthat the VHP conducted a'ghar wapsi ' ceremony atKharmadanga village inRampurhat in the dis trictWednesday during whichnearly 150 Christians were'forcibly' converted.

The VHP refuted thecharges of conversion but

claimed that a Hindu religiousceremony was conducted inwhich over 1 ,000 peoplefrom the village, includingMuslims and Christians tookpart.

On MahatmaGandhi's 67th death anniver-sary Friday, Banerjeestressed on communal har-mony and said there is an at-tempt to foment religious ten-sions in the state.

"The Indian Consti-tution doesn't give the rightto disrespect others. IndianConstitution is a secular con-stitution and tells us to treatreligions equally. "We are no-ticing (some people are) trig-gering a conflict between onereligion and another. Somepeople are trying to inciteviolence and tension amongdifferent religions".

She added: "If some-one thinks that now they arein the chair (in power) andwill throw away others, thenpeople will throw away suchpersons."

‘Nathuram Godsewanted rebirth to kill Gandhi again’

RANCHI: Nathuram Godsebelieved in rebirth and wantedto "kill Gandhi again" in hisnext birth. The confession bynone other than the assassinof Gandhi, who made head-lines again after more than sixdecades when a BJP MP de-scribed him as a "patriot" anda Hindu body allegedly per-formed a ceremony in Meerutfor construction of a "templededicated to Godse", was re-vealed by a former CIDsleuth.

Babu Harihar Singh(96) had a tryst with historywhen he became part of thesix-member investigatingteam that quizzed Godse af-ter Gandhi's assassination onJanuary 30, 1948. Singh, who retired as ASP in erst-while Bihar in 1977, is per-haps the only survivor whohad seen both Gandhi andGodse.

However, old age hasnot made Singh's memoryfeeble and he remembered viv-idly what Godse had told theCID sleuths in Mumbai'sArthur Road Jail. "I am aHindu and I believe in rebirth.Since I will be hanged and

will die an untimely death, Imay remain as a spirit till I amreborn. I pray to god that I amreborn with Gandhi so that Ican kill him again," Singhquoted Godse as saying dur-ing interrogation. The investi-gating team comprised twosub-inspectors, one assistantsub-inspector (Singh) and twoconstables and was led by in-spector Manohar Jha who in-terrogated Godse for 45 days."There were CID teams fromdifferent states who campedat the military barrack in Worliand interrogated Godse one byone for 45 days," he said, add-ing, "the idea to call CIDteams from states like Punjab,Madras, Central India agencyand Delhi was to find his linkin different states, and ac-cordingly the CID would workwith police of the respectivestates to establish the case,"said Singh, who stays with hisfamily in Ranchi.

The team went toerstwhile Bombay in the firstweek of March 1948 and re-turned in mid-April. "Godsehad always been cooperativewith the investigators. Faircomplexioned and blessed

with a smart personality, hehad no remorse for his actand was frank enough to ex-press himself," Singh remi-nisced but refused to be judg-mental.

Asked if he tried toknow the reason behindGodse's hatred for MahatmaGandhi, Singh said quotingGodse, "I used to respect himas a saint because he alwaysspoke the truth, which wasnot easy, but he was a failedpolitician."

Singh further ex-plained that Gandhi's pro-mi-nority policies, particularlythe communal riots ofNaokhali (now inBangladesh), irked Godse. The co-conspirator, NarayanApte, was also locked up inthe Arthur Road Jail.
