EDITORIAL.....Dishing out BS

Like Martin Luther King, Jr.who famously said that hehad a ‘dream’, KChandrasekhar Rao, chiefminister of the newly-createdstate of Telangana, also has adream. Though he is no King,Rao’s dream is truly kingly inits grandiosity: he wantsHyderabad to host the Olym-pics in 2024. Perhaps it iswith this in mind that his gov-ernment has launched aprogramme to reclaim some30,000 acres of Bhoodanland from illegal occupants, who reportedly are develop-ers and industrialists fromSeemandhra, according to thechief minister’s daughter andTRS MP, K Kavitha.“My fa-ther always had grand plans”,Kavitha is quoted as saying, adding that the newborn statewill have no problem raisingresources for the mega eventeven after the TRS govern-ment fulfils its promise ofgranting farmers a loan waiverof between Rs 15,000 and Rs17,000 crore.hether the cityof the famous Charminar andequally famous biryani doesin fact actually manage tohost even a mini olympicswithout a capital ‘O’, in2024, or anytime else in theforeseeable future, is a dif-ferent matter.

Chandrasekhar Rao’sgrand scheme once againhighlights a common trait ofall our netas, whichever stateor political party they repre-sent: they’re experts atdreaming big dreams andbuilding castles in theair.Soon after she had routedthe communists from theirstronghold in Bengal,Mamata Banerjee claimedthat she would transformKolkata into ‘another Lon-don’. She went about thislaudable objective by paintingthe town not red but blue, which by some logic knownonly to her was the first step

in this transformation.WhenChina announced, not long ago, that it would soon put a Chineseastronaut on the moon, someof our own literally and meta-phorically spaced-out netas an-nounced that, let alone themoon, India would put an Indianon the planet Mars.It has beensaid by sceptics that the capac-ity to talk big is in inverse pro-portion to doing little: the big-ger the talk, the less the actualwork done. However, this is anuncharitable, even a cynicalview.

Our big-talking politi-cos are only taking a leaf outof a very old book of statecraft, dating back to ancient Rome. When the populace got disaf-fected by the general state ofthings, the rulers of the Eter-nal City would provide themwith free bread and circuses, asa diversionary tactic. Bydreaming and talking big –about the Olympics, or Lon-don, or Mars, or whatever else– our netas are following anage-old political example:promise aam janata the moon, and fob it off withsixpence.Unlike the Roman pa-tricians of old, our netas can’tafford to give free bread to thepublic – the cost of atta beingwhat it is – but they can, and do,give us plenty of free circuses,or tamashas.

Their tall claims onwhat they’ll do on our behalfhelp to keep our heads in theclouds, from where we can’tsee the muck and mud thatwe’re walking on.So even ifChandrasekhar Rao and his gov-ernment can’t really bring theOlympics to Hyderabad in2024, maybe the hype andhoopla that has become thestock in trade of our netas cantake India to the Olympics with anew sport of their own creation:dishing out BS.What does BSstand for? Why, Big Speech, ofcourse. What did you think itstood for?
