A story has three elements.

Setting, Character and Plot are elements of a Story.

The setting tells about the time and the place where

the story happened.

The character tells about the important person or

persons in the story.

The Plot tells about the events in the story. It includes

problems the character faces in the story and the

resolution of the problem.

Waiting for Sally (By: Nelia D. Bamba)

“Sally is coming home today!” said mother. “We should go

to the bus terminal to welcome her.” Father and Ben went along.

Sally will surely have heavy baggage. Aunt Rosa stayed back

home to prepare Sally’s favorite buko shake and bibingka.

“How exciting, mother! After two long months of work, she is

coming home,” said Ben. “I wonder what she bought for me.”

At the terminal, Father asked, “Buses have come and gone.

Where is Sally?”

“The sun is now starting to set. Let’s wait for the next bus.

Sally might already be in it, “mother said with a worried voice.

Holding back tears from his eyes, Ben said, “Mother, I’m sure

she’s on the next bus. Don’t worry.”

“Here is the last bus from the city!” said father. “Let’s hope

Sally is in it.”

As the door of the bus opened, Sally ran to her family with

smile on her lips and shouting “Mother, father, at last, I’m here!”

“You have made everybody worried,” said father.

“I’m sorry but traffic was long,” said Sally.

Father and Ben helped Sally with her bags. Sally carried the

extra bag. “Ben, I bought you three new t-shirts and a back

pack,” said Sally.

“Thank you,” said Ben. “But what is more important is

we’re together again.”

Nouns can be divided into two groups: COUNT nouns

and MASS nouns.

Nouns can be counted are called “count nouns.” The

plural forms of these nouns are usually made by

adding an “s” to the singular forms.

For example:

flower – flowers kite – kites

road – roads friend – friends

MASS nouns are things which cannot be counted one

by one. Some common mass nouns are:

scrambled out and picked their bags.

“Time to go home, thank God its Friday!” said the children.

“Alright kids, everybody on the bus now,” said Mang

Peping. Soon the bus was on its way. Suddenly, the bus

stopped. It would not run.

“I have to check the machine, kids, “the driver said. “We will

be a little late, but don’t worry this is just a small problem.”

melons, pomelos, pineapples, and guavas at the stalls! They

look so fresh,” said Marie.

“Those fruit stalls were not there yesterday,” said Miguel.

“It’s harvest time,” said Mang Peping. “Those fruits were

harvested yesterday by those people from their farm.”

“I wish mother had seen these fruits. She will surely buy

some,” said Miguel. “I love to eat fruits. Mother said they’re

good for the health.”

“Hey, remember the activity we did in class this morning?”

Ana said.

“Yes, we did a rap and a chant about healthy food with

Miss Santos,” Kevin answered.

“Instead of getting bored waiting, let’s rap,” Jose

exclaimed. The he began to rap:

“Pomelos, Pomelos, juicy, juicy, juicy,

Pomelos juicy, fruity, juicy pomelos (Right)

I love juicy, juicy pomelos

Juice that tickles, tickles me best. (Yes, yes, yo!)

Jose, Mario and Ana followed and started rapping:

All the other kids joined in the rap naming all the fruits they

saw in the fruit stand. No one noticed the bus running again to

take them home.

The Plot is an element of the story.

It is made up of the problem and its solution.

The problem tells a situation that the character of the

story faces.

The solution tells how the character faced the solution

and solved it.

Maria asked him what his mother was doing. Rolly smiled and

answered, “She is cooking lunch. I need to buy her a pack of

salt.” Leaving the store, Rolly thanked Aling Maria for helping him

remember.

What is Rolly’s problem?

How was he able to solve his problem?

A hungry dog went into an open gate. He saw a brown hen

with five chicks scratching the ground. The little chicks looked

good to eat. He slowly walked towards them with sharp teeth

showing. The farmer saw the dog and immediately got a

Events in poems and stories happen in a certain order.

When we sequence events, we arrange them according

to the order they happened in a story or poem.

Activity 2

The sentences from the story are in the wrong order. Copy and

then arrange the sentences according to the correct sequence

of events. Do this in a separate sheet of paper.

Activity 6

Just Like the Ants

“Look at the ants Kuya Anton, why are they always

busy?”asked Brigette.

“They help each other looking for food to save for the rainy

days,” answered Attila.

While they were busy observing the ants crawling on the

ground, they heard their father.

“Athena, Brigette and Rose come here. Please help me

clean our backyard,” called Mang Jose.

Immediately the children ran towards their father. Soon they

were busy with their chores.

Athena sweeps the yard. Brigette waters the plants. Rose

cultivates the soil. Little Mark pulls the weeds. Kuya Anton carries

the dry to leaves to the compost pit and Mang Jose puts organic
