Introduction
Our parish history began in 1988 when our area was still part of Santa Teresita Parish in El Mirage and of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Sun City West. Fr. Moynihan arranged for the first Masses at Happy Trails Resort.
Most Reverend Thomas J. O'Brien chose the name, St. Clare of Assisi and established the parish on July 1, 2000. He appointed Fr. John Coleman as the founding pastor. For ten months three weekend Masses were held at the Kingswood Parke Elementary School in Surprise. Later, in the summer of 2001, two temporary buildings were placed on 12.5 acres owned by the Diocese of Phoenix at the corner of Bell Road and Cotton Lane.
Fr. Hans P. Ruygt was appointed by Bishop O'Brien to lead the parish on July 1, 2002 and to carry out a building program. Thousands of parishioners rallied together to raise funds and to assess the needs of the parish. They determined that the first need was for a permanent church. They conducted several capital campaigns. Parishioners could donate to the general building fund or donate to purchase specific liturgical arts or other items for the church. These were classified as “Memorials”.
Because of the enormous expense of building the church and the desire to get this started as soon as possible, a pragmatic decision was made to use the Memorial donations for building the basic church. This decision was shared with parishioners with the promise that the Memorials would eventually be purchased as finances allowed.
On August 12, 2006 the day after the Feast of our patroness, St. Clare of Assisi, Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, Bishop of Phoenix, gathered the parishioners, with Fr. Coleman, Fr. Ruygt and several other priests and deacons and civic leaders for the Blessing and Groundbreaking for the new church. Site work and grading were completed in 2007 and the parking lot was expanded. Construction on the church began in January 2008.
It was a glorious day when parishioners moved into the new church and celebrated the first Mass on Christmas Eve 2008.
In June 2009, the church committed that any money donated for Memorials, would be saved in restricted accounts and used to buy the memorial for which it was donated once full funding was completed. The promise to purchase memorials is being kept.
2009: altar, ambo, crucifix, baptismal font
2010: Our Lady & Child shrine, tabernacle, consecration cross, holy water stoups
2011: reredos, baptismal screen, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe
2012: tiles, stained glass windows
Additional memorials will continue to be purchased once funding is available. We are deeply grateful for everyone who has helped to beautify the church through their donations to memorials. We pray for our donors and those they honored or remembered through their donation. May God Bless.
-- Fr. Hans Ruygt, Pastor, St. Clare of Assisi, April 2012

The Altar is rightly the center of the church, both spiritually and in the liturgy. The altar has been executed in tropic brown granite with creamy onyx columns with sparking white Carerra marble accents. The Altar features the image of the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei).

In the waters of baptism we are washed of sin, die to our old self, born anew in Christ, and received into the Church. The baptistery needs to signify all of these meanings: it is both “womb” and “tomb”. The octagonal plan which opens to the sanctuary is an ancient Christian shape that recalls the Eighth Day as a new beginning, the Roman mausoleum as a place of death and burial, and a site memorial symbolically representing the River Jordan. The location of the baptistery is intended both to show the integral link between the Eucharist and Baptism, as well as to provide a dignified place where all can witness the Sacrament either during Mass or in a separate ceremony. The sloped floor and the raised infant font allow for both traditional pouring on the head, or a more dramatic “affusion” or pouring over the whole body.

The majestic Crucifix is 15’ tall with a larger than life size hand-sculpted corpus of our Lord. The Lord is shown, alive, and looking with compassion at his mother. To each side are images of Our Lady and St John painted in a classical Renaissance style. Above and to the side, four angels holding the instruments of Our Lord’s Passion (“arma Christi”) are in sorrowful reverence. At the foot of the Cross sits Adam’s skull, a traditional image recalling the legend that Christ was crucified over the site of Adam’s grave. It signifies that Calvary means “the place of the Skull”, and most importantly that in Christ we are all victorious over death. The crucifix was made in Italy.

When we first enter a church, we bless ourselves from the holy water stoups to remind ourselves of our baptismal promises, and to ask for God’s grace. These stoups are hand crafted from bronze with a sea shell bowl and floral accents to recall our new life in Christ.

St. Clare’s has seating for about 1400 people. The church will eventually seat about 2000 people, but we must first expand the parking lot before the city of Surprise will allow us to increase seating beyond 1400. Current seating is chairs, but some day we will have pews. The pews will be designed for comfort, durability and aesthetics, and will be made in stain grade hardwoods with book racks and padded kneelers.

The heart of the church is the sanctuary, especially the altar and the tabernacle. These sacred places are framed with a “reredos”, a grand and elegant altarpiece which is a traditional backdrop to the liturgy. The reredos, with its copper dome recalling the cupola over the church, is an expression of the Heavenly Jerusalem. The twelve columns recall the Twelve Apostles. The reredos is made of tropic brown granite, accented with rich dark brown Emperador marble. The columns are made of golden/honey onyx with sparkling white Carerra marble accents. The dome is copper-plated shingles.

The Stations of the Cross were originally purchased by Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Greenfield, MA. Sacred Heart was founded as a Polish ethnic parish in 1914. It is
believed the Stations were purchased shortly after the church was opened. In 2005,
Sacred Heart was closed as it became part of 3 churches in the area that were merged
into a new church, Our Lady of Peace, in Turner Falls, MA.
The Stations were made by Daprato Studios, a foremost supplier of Liturgical Art in the
United States. They are painted cast plaster.
These vintage Stations of the Cross were 100 years old when they were installed at St.
Clare’s in 2014.

Pope Paul VI taught that the tabernacle is “the living heart of each of our churches”. The new tabernacle for the Church of St Clare will be a dignified and majestic “tempietto” – a little temple – as an appropriate place for the Lord in the center of the sanctuary. The design for the tabernacle is based on the church that honors the site of St Peter’s martyrdom in Rome: “San Pietro in Montorio” by the great Renaissance architect Bramante. This church was used by Bernini to design the tabernacle at St Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, to honor the Holy Year 1675. The tabernacle is handcrafted of bronze and other artistic metals, to express and remind us of the universal nature of our Catholic Faith, united with the Holy Father, in the Blessed Sacrament.

Surrounding the nave is a series of 22 large half round windows which will beautifully illustrate the core of our faith in Christ, expressing and reminding us of our Scriptural basis of the Sacraments and the Holy Mass. We have selected Mr. Joseph Beyer of Beyer Studios in Philadelphia, PA, one of the country’s finest representational stained glass artists, to bring forth this vision.

Memorials Available for Donation Updated 10/27/2014
We hope that all parishioners first contribute to plate income (ordinary collection – to pay regular expenses) and the
loan repayment fund (to pay back our loan) before making donations to memorials.
All money donated to memorials is put into a restricted account and will only be used for the purchase of memorials.
Memorials will be purchased once they are fully funded. Pricing for memorials is somewhat above the actual cost of the
item. This extra donation allows us to set aside money so that we may purchase those memorials that were donated
prior to 2009 whose purchase was deferred because those funds were needed to help construct the church. Any money
donated for memorials already installed will also be used to purchase deferred memorials.
