DVR buying & usage tips:

• Set up the DVR properly, to ensure you gain from its full functionality• Remember to check that you are adhering to the Data Protection Act 1988. A 2015 poll1 found that 92% of fl eet managers agreed that telematics had a positive impact on their fl eet. Productivity improvements were the most common reason quoted, followed by increased fuel effi ciency and better routing. The data from telematics is used both actively to reduce costs and improve asset utilisation as well as having a role to passively monitor driver and vehicle well-being. The introduction of DVR hard drive recording has enhanced the latter role and is now reverse engineering the former.

Vehicle telematics, simply put, is the long distance transmission of vehicle data. Before GPS, some data was collected when the vehicle returned to base from on-board tachographs, still legally required for vehicles registered in the EU to collect driver information. However, when GPS was made available for civilian use, the possibility of transmitting vehicle data in something approaching real-time opened up huge data possibilities and the issue became how to utilise it. While some telematics systems collect ‘packets’ of data to transmit occasionally rather than transmitting live, all systems depend on availability of a cellular network signal to make transmissions.

Subject to a signal, telematics enables a vehicle’s location to be viewed remotely on digital maps, but whether in range or not, its movements are recorded and vital statistics captured (including

speed and fuel use) and vehicle telematics gain their broader sense of managing assets.

Fleet owners reap many benefi ts from fi tting vehicle monitoring, including:

• improvements in fl eet management - better routing - optimised dispatch times - reduced maintenance costs, e.g. timely oil changes thanks to exact usage data, etc

• improvements from changed driver behaviour - adherence to speed limits - minimised fuel usage (care in acceleration and braking)

• vehicle theft deterrence and improved chance of recovery if stolen

In summary, vehicle monitoring means better utilisation of assets and reduced costs.

Telematics is no longer a luxury or the preserve of large fl eets. Impressive reductions in fuel consumption of 10% to 40% are quoted in studies. Fuel price increases mean these savings could now determine the viability of a business.

Vehicle insurance is a huge cost to fl eet owners. The development of economical hard drive DVRs and on board cameras now enable poor or even dangerous driving and hazardous events to be captured as evidence - whether perpetrated upon the vehicle or by the driver of the vehicle.

New systems enable emergency services to be notifi ed automatically if tell-tale signs of an accident are detected and can report location if a driver is unconscious.

Demand for DVR hard drive systems is growing hugely as picture quality improves and units are now being developed that off er the whole vehicle tracking and telematics role in a single package.
